Ray Nayler's Where the Axe Is Buried is an intense, claustrophobic novel of a world run by "rational" AIs that purport to solve all of our squishy political problems with empirical, neutral mathematics:

In Naylor's world, we there are two blocs. "The west," where the heads of state have been replaced with chatbots called "PMs." These PMs propose policy to tame, rubberstamp legislatures, creating jobs programs, setting monetary and environmental policies, and ruling on other tricky areas where it's nearly impossible to make everyone happy. These countries are said to be "rationalized," and they are peaceful and moderately prosperous, and have finally tackled the seemingly intractable problems of decarbonization, extreme poverty, and political instability.

In "the Republic" – a thinly veiled version of Russia – the state is ruled by an immortal tyrant who periodically has his consciousness decanted into a blank body after his own body falls apart. The state maintains the fiction that each president is a new person, manufacturing families, friends, teachers and political comrades who can attest to the new president's long history in the country. People in the Republic pretend to believe this story, but in practice, everyone knows that it's the same mind running the country, albeit sometimes with ill-advised modifications, such as an overclocking module that runs the president's mind at triple human speeds.

The Republic is a totalitarian nightmare of ubiquitous surveillance and social control, in which every movement and word is monitored, and where social credit scores are adjusted continuously to reflect the political compliance of each citizen. Low social credit scores mean fewer rations, a proscribed circle of places you can go, reduced access to medical care, and social exclusion. The Republic has crushed every popular uprising, acting on the key realization that the only way to cling to power is to refuse to yield it, even (especially) if that means murdering every single person who takes part in a street demonstration against the government.

By contrast, the western states with their chatbot PMs are more open – at least superficially. However, the "rationalized" systems use less obvious – but no less inescapable – soft forms of control that limit the social mobility, career chances, and moment-to-moment and day-to-day lives of the people who live there. As one character who ventures from the Republic to London notes, it is a strange relief to be continuously monitored by cameras there to keep you safe and figure out how to manipulate you into buying things, rather than being continuously monitored by cameras seeking a way to punish you.

The tale opens on the eve of the collapse of these two systems, as the current president of the Republic's body starts to reject the neural connectome that was implanted into its vat-grown brain, even as the world's PMs start to sabotage their states, triggering massive civil unrest that brings the west to its knees, one country after another.

This is the backdrop for a birchpunk† tale of AI skulduggery, lethal robot insects, radical literature, swamp-traversing mechas, and political intrigue that flits around a giant cast of characters, creating a dizzying, in-the-round tour of Nayler's paranoid world

And what a paranoid world it is! Nayler's world shows two different versions of Oracle boss (and would-be Tiktok owner) Larry Ellison, who keeps pumping his vision of an AI-driven surveillance state where everyone is continuously observed, recorded and judged by AIs so we are all on our "best behavior":

This batshit idea from one of tech's worst billionaires is a perfect foil for a work of first-rate science fiction like Where the Axe Is Buried, which provides an emotional flythrough of how such a world would obliterate the authentic self, authentic relationships, and human happiness.

Where the Axe Is Buried conjures up that world beautifully, really capturing the deadly hopelessness of a life where the order is fixed for all eternity, thanks to the flawless execution of perfect, machine-generated power plays. But Axe shows how the embers of hope smolder long after they should have been extinguished, and how they are always ready to be kindled into a roaring, system-consuming wildfire.

Surveillance by Another Name?

Of course, not everyone is sold. Privacy advocates are rightfully alarmed. The idea of scanning irises and tying them to crypto wallets sets off Orwellian alarm bells—especially in jurisdictions where surveillance tech is already rampant.

World insists it doesn’t store biometric data and uses zero-knowledge proofs to confirm personhood. But as any technologist knows, the gap between “we don’t store your data” and “we never could” is often wide and legally squishy.

Moreover, World’s rollout in emerging markets came with the promise of “free money” in exchange for scanning—leading some critics to call it biometric colonialism. de quel PIRE châtiment pensez-vous que sera jugé digne celui qui aura foulé aux pieds le Fils de Dieu, qui aura tenu pour profane le sang de l'alliance, par lequel il a été sanctifié (RACHETÉ), et qui aura outragé l'Esprit de la grâce?

Car nous connaissons celui qui a dit:

À MOI LA VENGEANCE, à moi la rétribution!

et encore:

LE SEIGNEUR JUGERA SON PEUPLE (VOUS ET MOI).

C'est une chose terrible que de tomber entre les mains du Dieu vivant.…

La colère de Dieu se révèle du ciel contre toute impiété et toute injustice des hommes qui retiennent injustement la vérité captive (L’EMPÊCHANT DE FAIRE SON OEUVRE LIBÉRATRICE, PAR INCRÉDULITÉ, NÉGLIGENCE OU RÉBELLION), car ce qu'on peut connaître de Dieu est manifeste pour eux, Dieu le leur ayant fait connaître.

LEUR FIN SERA LA PERDITION;

ils ont pour dieu leur ventre (LEURS SENS, DÉSIRS ET PLAISIRS CHARNELS), ils mettent leur gloire dans ce qui fait leur honte (LEURS RICHESSES INJUSTES, ETC), ils ne pensent qu'aux choses de la terre (DES MONDAINS).

Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain. Exode 20.16

Le mensonge n’était déjà pas apprécié dans la plupart des cultures anciennes, mais le neuvième commandement expose au grand jour sa véritable nature. C’est un calcul, une stratégie, que nous ne pourrons pas gérer indéfiniment, un piège dans lequel le menteur tombera lui-même.

C’est le premier péché : celui du « Serpent », qui affirme au premier couple que… Dieu leur ment. Notre mot « hypocrite » vient d’un mot grec qui désignait à l’origine une sorte de chamane, de là un acteur (le théâtre est un rituel dé-sacralisé), puis quelqu’un dont on ne sait pas s’il est sincère ou s’il bluffe, enfin un imposteur. On ne savait pas trop à quoi s’en tenir avec les visions et les oracles. Dieu nous révèle qu’ils sont tout simplement faux, et avertit régulièrement son peuple contre les faux prophètes. Dieu est lumière et Dieu-l ’Esprit met toujours le projecteur sur la calomnie. Même si elle consiste en une utilisation fautive, biaisée, intéressée de la Bible : le Diable a essayé sur Jésus-Christ lui-même, dans le désert… sans aucun succès.

Reconnaissons que nous croyons le mensonge du diable, qui nous dit que nous pouvons très bien vivre sans Dieu. Reconnaissons aussi qu’il nous est si facile de mentir, avec parfois des conséquences désastreuses (voir lecture proposée). Venons à la lumière, à la vérité.

Buenos Aires, 7 de mayo de 2024. Aseguralo, el broker de seguros 100% digital de Hawk Group, anunció que realizó con éxito un viaje a Silicon Valley junto a la Cámara Insurtech. En esta oportunidad, invitó a su aliado comercial BZA Group para participar de charlas de innovación en las compañías más disruptivas del mundo.

El viaje a Silicon Valley se realizó entre los días 15 y 19 de abril, y tuvo por objetivo que los miembros de la Cámara Insurtech Argentina pudieran conocer los avances de la Inteligencia Artificial aplicada al mercado asegurador y pensar en la evolución de la industria en el país. Gabriel Depascual, Gerente General de Aseguralo y secretario de la comisión directiva de la cámara, participó de esta experiencia junto a José Fregona, Director de BZA Group, aliado comercial de Hawk Group.

"Quienes participamos de esta experiencia nos pudimos enriquecer, actualizarnos sobre lo último en Inteligencia Artificial aplicada no solo a la industria del seguro sino también a cómo podemos aprovechar y mejorar nuestra calidad de atención al cliente con la experiencia de usuario; además de generar relacionamientos muy importantes y visualizar cómo los soñadores y creadores con perseverancia logran cambiar el mundo. La agenda del viaje a Silicon Valley

"El primer día, visitamos a la empresa Oracle, una de las mayores compañías de software a nivel mundial, donde Silvina Martinelli, Leo Leung, Srini Venkat y Luis Arturo Díaz compartieron sus conocimientos y experiencias en el mundo tecnológico a través de presentaciones orientadas a brindar a los asistentes conceptos transformadores con la tecnología como aliada clave. La visita finalizó con una cena en el Barrel House Tavern, en Sausalito, con vistas a la ciudad de San Francisco y el Golden Gate Bridge", detalló Gabriel Depascual.

"La segunda jornada comenzó con un desayuno en la Universidad de Stanford, considerada como una de las diez mejores del mundo, para luego poder escuchar las ponencias de Gregory LaBlanc y Michael Todasco sobre cómo la innovación, el Design Thinking y la Inteligencia Artificial Generativa (Gen AI, por sus siglas en inglés) están transformando la industria de seguros", dijo Depascual. Y explicó: "Luego de un almuerzo y un mini tour por el campus de la Universidad, los 20 miembros de la Cámara que participamos de esta experiencia recorrimos Googleplex, en Mountain View, para conocer en profundidad la cultura y la innovación que caracterizan a una de las cinco grandes empresas tecnológicas del mundo y una de las marcas más valiosas. Tuvimos también la oportunidad de visitar lugares emblemáticos, como la casa de Steve Jobs, que vio nacer a Apple, el Apple Park, y el legendario garage donde Bill Hewlett y David Packard, graduados de la Universidad de Stanford, desarrollaron el primer producto de la empresa Hewlett Packard: un oscilador de audio. El ambiente de Topgolf, elegido para la cena, sirvió para intercambiar ideas y hacer un repaso de las experiencias vividas hasta el momento".

"El tercer día visitamos Plug and Play Tech Center, la compañía de capital de riesgo que entre el 2020 y el 2022 fue reconocida como la aceleradora de startups más activa del mundo. Jackie Hernández, Rafael Sainz Sainz de Baranda y Andrés Díaz Martínez adentraron a los asistentes en el mundo del Venture Capital (VC) en relación con el ecosistema fintech, insurtech y healthtech. Allí mismo, los socios de la cámara fueron agasajados con un almuerzo buffet, donde pudieron intercambiar ideas y experiencias junto a los disertantes y anfitriones", describió el Gerente General de Aseguralo y agregó: "El viaje continuó en Amazon, donde pudimos escuchar, a través de Ronaldo França, cómo AWS (Amazon Web Services) está apoyando a las insurtech para innovar en la industria y las posibilidades que brinda la Inteligencia Artificial y la Gen AI. La enriquecedora jornada finalizó con una cena en el Pier 5".

"El cuarto y último día tuvo la visita a Anthropic, una empresa de investigación y desarrollo de Inteligencia Artificial fundada por ex miembros de OpenAI, compañía creadora de ChatGPT, donde pudimos explorar nuevas fronteras en el sector, para finalizar este viaje de innovación en la empresa argentina Globant, donde escuchamos la ponencia brindada por Guillermo Ramhorst, Aldana Sol D´Amen y Suyash Awasthi sobre cómo las nuevas tecnologías están impulsando la transformación de la industria de seguros", explicó Gabriel Depascual.y destacó: "También quedó tiempo para visitar el Ohana Floor en la Salesforce Tower, el edificio más alto de San Francisco, pudiendo contemplar desde las alturas las mejores vistas de la ciudad, Alcatraz y el Golden Gate, para luego disfrutar de un cóctel de cierre de viaje en el Proper Hotel".

Experiencia en el auto autónomo de Waymo

"Todos los que participamos del viaje tuvimos la posibilidad de, a través de una app, pedir un auto autónomo de la empresa Waymo para hacer un viaje por la ciudad. Subimos con dudas y curiosidad, pero a medida que el vehículo nos transportaba sentíamos que el manejo era muy seguro, confiable y con todo el confort, tomando todas las medidas de seguridad y atención al extremo, desde frenar en los semáforos y detenerse en los lugares permitidos, hasta esquivar un bache y frenar ante el pedido de alguno de los pasajeros de bajar para realizar un trámite en el banco, para luego reanudar la marcha. Incluso ver cómo salía correctamente de una situación de atasco de tránsito. Todo esto mientras contemplábamos cómo el volante se movía de un lado a otro, y sintiendo como aceleraba y frenaba correctamente en cada tramo", contó Depascual, y concluyó: "Fue una experiencia muy interesante que nos lleva a la reflexión sobre los avances ya logrados en la aplicación de la Inteligencia Artificial y sobre todo lo que vendrá y cómo poder aplicarlo de la mejor manera en nuestra industria de Seguros".

Je veux juste te voir danser sous la pluie violette

Quitter Paris ou ne pas quitter Paris, telle est la question.

Beaucoup se la posent. A vrai dire la plupart des parisiens que je fréquente et avec qui j’aborde le sujet. Pour ma part j’y reviens régulièrement depuis plusieurs années. Je me sens l’envie de filer sans y arriver vraiment. Il faut dire que j’entretiens avec cette ville une relation pas très saine, du genre Je t’aime moi non plus et je pense que je ne suis pas la seule. Tantôt je m’intoxique avec son énergie, l’infini des possibilités, la foule et les sirènes d’ambulances qu’on entend jusque dans les films tournés dans des appartements mal insonorisés. Je me dis qu’il n’y a qu’elle. Tantôt je suffoque, je la hais et je me sens vidée après la moindre promenade dans des rues trop étroites, trop grises, où se côtoient sans se parler la misère la plus sinistre et l’opulence la plus criante.

J’ai battu son pavé pendant des années, voire des décennies, ravie, et à l’époque je n’aurais jamais imaginé pouvoir un jour être tentée par la perspective de voir la mer depuis la fenêtre de ma résidence principale ou entendre les rossignols chanter dans un jardin au petit matin. Les pigeons et les rats suffisaient largement. Est-ce moi qui ai vieilli ou la ville qui a changé ?

Je n’ai pas de réponse à cette question, mais quand on envisage de quitter Paris, une autre émerge rapidement : partir pour aller où ?

Un jour quelqu’un m’a dit « Où que j’aille, j’ai l’impression que j’y serais mieux qu’à Paris ». Certes, mais tout de même. Il y a un certain nombre de paramètres à prendre en compte : le travail, la distance avec ses amis et sa famille, le niveau d’urbanité, la vie culturelle, les orientations politiques aussi. Hier Alessandro me disait être attiré par le Nord de la France mais refroidi par les résultats du RN très élevés lors des dernières élections.

Il y a un autre paramètre qui n’est pas facilitant, c’est faire ce choix quand on est seul.e. Je m’explique : passé l’âge des études, d’Erasmus ou des premiers boulots dans lesquels il est facile de faire des rencontres, s’installer seul.e dans un nouveau territoire peut s’avérer compliqué sur le plan social. Franchir le pas quand on est célibataire, à l’âge où il devient urgent de se poser pour « construire », peut carrément paraître comme une prise de risque qui pourrait s’avérer fatale.

Après tout Paris, c’est plus de 2 millions d’habitants, rien qu’intramuros, donc grosso modo si je rajoute la banlieue, que je divise par deux, que je soustrais 40%, que je fais plouf plouf, je dirais qu’il y a minimum plusieurs dizaines de milliers de personnes parmi lesquelles on peut aller piocher pour dessiner son tableau de vie idéale.

Si on décide d’aller s’installer à Guéret en Creuse, qui ne compte que 15 000 habitants, ça devient tout de suite plus compliqué. Pourtant le nombre de rossignols au kilomètre carré y est nettement plus important.

Quand j’y pense parfois, je ressens comme une injustice. Puis je m’imagine l’enjeu que représenterait une installation en couple dans une ville où on ne connaît personne, avec le risque d’un repli sur soi qui nous remettrait presque dans une situation de confinement. Quand j’en parle avec mes amis qui ont des enfants et qui comme moi étouffent à Paris, ils me sensibilisent à un paramètre auquel je ne pensais même pas, le déracinement des enfants de leur vie scolaire et amicale.

Conclusion : quitter Paris, c’est dur pour tout le monde.

Ayant tout de même envie de tenter l’aventure mais me trouvant face à un dilemme que je ne parvenais pas à résoudre seule, j’ai dû faire appel à un soutien extérieur, une nouvelle méthode d’aide à la décision.

Utiliser mon oracle du Cercle des femmes ? Non.

Du coaching ? Non plus.

Pile ou face ? Oh quand même, c’est sérieux comme sujet !

Pour me décider à quitter Paris, j’ai utilisé la Théorie des couleurs.

Pour comprendre comment j’en suis arrivée là, il faut remonter quelques mois en arrière. Comme je l’ai dit, cela fait depuis plusieurs années, je dirais quelques mois avant le COVID, que je me pose la question de quitter la ville lumière. J’ai des destinations en tête, Bordeaux, Lille, Barcelone, le Portugal … et puis Vincent débarque dans mon cœur avec son projet marseillais qui me paraît pas mal du tout. Pendant quelques temps j’essaie de m’y projeter malgré les confinements, les couvre-feux et les déboires de couple.

Quand notre histoire prend l’eau, je me reconcentre sur l’Ile de France et envisage de franchir la petite ceinture pour aller palper un peu de verdure vers Les Lilas ou Romainville. Mais Vincent revient dans le tableau et Marseille aussi. Finalement, quand nous faisons le constat que notre relation fonctionne mieux avec une dynamique amicale qu’amoureuse, j’abandonne l’idée de m’installer dans le sud avec lui.

Les mois passent et je constate que Paris, et maintenant toute sa région, me sortent de plus en plus par les trous de nez, tout comme je constate que j’ai du mal à digérer d’avoir dû abandonner le projet phocéen.

Et un jour, c’est la révélation. Je descends à Marseille pour l’anniversaire de Nelly qui en est originaire et a rejoint le paquebot deux ans avant et alors que nous passons au-dessus de la plage des Catalans, à l’heure du coucher de soleil, je me fige. Je m’y vois. C’est ici que j’ai envie de m’installer.

Une vision, ça inspire et ça motive, mais franchir le cap est une autre affaire. En tout cas pour moi. Je commence d’abord par aller passer un peu de temps à Marseille au cœur de l’hiver pour tester la ville dans les pires conditions. L’expérience est plutôt concluante et pendant mon séjour, je fais des rencontres. Notamment un joueur de basse croisé sur le Cours Julien et avec qui je finis dans une espèce de bar dansant de nuit, clandestin mais pas vraiment clandestin, bref on n’est pas là pour faire le guide de la night marseillaise.

Parmi ses nombreux attributs, ce jeune homme porte un sweat shirt violet et un foulard type flamenco, violet lui aussi. C’est une couleur que l’on voit peu, et encore moins sur un homme. Je ne manque pas de lui souligner et il me répond que c’est sa couleur préférée. Cette information paraît anecdotique mais je la retiens et quand j’en parle à Léa, elle me répond du tac au tac « C’est peut-être un signe … ».

Léa adore la symbolique. Sous-entend-elle que ce sweat violet est porteur d’un message qui m’est adressé ? Si oui, lequel ? La couleur violette contient-elle la réponse à la question : dois-je partir m’installer à Marseille ?

Piquée par la curiosité, je commence mes recherches sur la symbolique du violet. Voici ce que je trouve sur l’article Wikipedia : « le violet est une couleur ambigüe », aïe, on n’est pas aidés.

« Le violet est une couleur fuyante » La fuite ? le départ ? C’est un peu négatif non ?

« Pendant longtemps, la couleur violette fut mal considérée, elle symbolisait la fourberie et la tristesse ». Génial…

« Dans la symbolique occidentale, le violet est associé à la noblesse et à la jalousie ». Là je ne sais plus quoi penser.

« En ésotérisme, c'est la couleur de l'initiation ». Voilà, j’aime mieux. Un départ dans une nouvelle ville c’est une initiation non ?

Cela peut paraître tiré par les cheveux mais quand on se penche sur la théorie des couleurs, on apprend plein de choses passionnantes sur les effets que les couleurs ont sur notre psychisme. Cette approche est utilisée en décoration d’intérieur, en marketing bien sûr, mais aussi pour apporter des soins, c’est ce qu’on appelle la chromothérapie.

A mon retour de Marseille, je sens que je touche la décision du bout des doigts mais que je n’y suis pas encore tout à fait. La trouille, probablement. Alors je me retourne vers les signes de l’univers. Arrivée à la gare de Lyon, je vois que la ligne 14 est fermée. C’est la ligne violette, ça veut dire que je ne dois pas aller à Marseille ? J’arrive près de chez moi, rue Poulet et je prends conscience que la plupart des salons de coiffure africains ont des devantures violettes. Ça veut dire que je dois aller à Marseille ?

Ça dure comme ça pendant quelques jours mais le doute persiste. J’en ai envie mais en suis-je capable ? Déménager toutes mes affaires ne sera-t-il pas trop compliqué ? Et si je me sens seule ? Et si j’ai trop chaud ? Je précise que sur le plan professionnel ce déménagement n’aurait pas un impact trop important, d’où le fait que les questions que je me pose manquent un peu de substance, même si elles me réveillent la nuit.

Deux semaines après mon retour, on me parle d’un appartement à louer à Marseille qui a l’air de cocher pas mal de cases. Le projet commence à se dessiner et je me sens prête à faire le pas.

Mais la confirmation que cette décision est la bonne arrive à un moment où je ne m’y attends pas du tout. Alors que je remonte la rue Poulet, pour la 1150ème fois de ma vie et que j’écoute la playlist Spotify « En boucle », où passent des chansons de tous les styles, que j’ai écoutées à peu près autant de fois, démarre un morceau qui me fige lui aussi. Un accord de guitare doux amer, suivi d’une mélodie qui me donne envie de danser un slow ou de me lancer dans karaoké solo.

Mais bien sûr, Léa avait raison, c’était un signe. Un messager bassiste – et j’ai oublié de le dire, fan de funk - qui porte du violet, c’est Prince qui s’est incarné dans ce marseillais pour me dire à moi, rien qu’à moi, de venir m’installer dans cette ville*.

Je ne suis pas encore partie mais c’est presque fait et je peux l’affirmer aujourd’hui, la rue Poulet ne me manquera pas.

Given the other christian imagery (church of first light) i found it weird that there's 5 light wardens (lakeland, ill mheg, raktika, ahm areng, kholusia) when they seem to be paralleling the 4 archangels. Also weird that 3 of them are named after the greek ideals of love but not all the types of love and not all the lightwardens.
