alright yall my pc monitor has given up the ghost, so I'm gonna make a real commission post later today when I've got time to charge my laptop. goddammit.
#true story#having a very cool and normal one. ugh.#I also need to find monitors I can get to set a money goal#ughhhh#ya I think 20 bucks for a clean sketch seems reasonable. thats about an hour or twos worth of work#UGH#whatever. whatever. I'm annoyed.#partially because my dad came by and helped me fix the monitor by swapping the cable#except that APPARENTLY didnt WORK#and its not the pc itself I dont think because this is a different cable in a different port#so unless its a software issue its not the pc#but that just means the monitor itself is fucked and there's no real way to fix it#aaaaaaaa!!!!!!

What is Dataflow?
This post is inspired by another post about the Crowd Strike IT disaster and a bunch of people being interested in what I mean by Dataflow. Dataflow is my absolute jam and I'm happy to answer as many questions as you like on it. I even put referential pictures in like I'm writing an article, what fun!
I'll probably split this into multiple parts because it'll be a huge post otherwise but here we go!
A Brief History
Our world is dependent on the flow of data. It exists in almost every aspect of our lives and has done so arguably for hundreds if not thousands of years.
At the end of the day, the flow of data is the flow of knowledge and information. Normally most of us refer to data in the context of computing technology (our phones, PCs, tablets etc) but, if we want to get historical about it, the invention of writing and the invention of the Printing Press were great leaps forward in how we increased the flow of information.
Modern Day IT exists for one reason - To support the flow of data.
Whether it's buying something at a shop, sitting staring at an excel sheet at work, or watching Netflix - All of the technology you interact with is to support the flow of data.
Understanding and managing the flow of data is as important to getting us to where we are right now as when we first learned to control and manage water to provide irrigation for early farming and settlement.
Engineering Rigor
When the majority of us turn on the tap to have a drink or take a shower, we expect water to come out. We trust that the water is clean, and we trust that our homes can receive a steady supply of water.
Most of us trust our central heating (insert boiler joke here) and the plugs/sockets in our homes to provide gas and electricity. The reason we trust all of these flows is because there's been rigorous engineering standards built up over decades and centuries.
For example, Scottish Water will understand every component part that makes up their water pipelines. Those pipes, valves, fitting etc will comply with a national, or in some cases international, standard. These companies have diagrams that clearly map all of this out, mostly because they have to legally but also because it also vital for disaster recovery and other compliance issues.
Modern IT
And this is where modern day IT has problems. I'm not saying that modern day tech is a pile of shit. We all have great phones, our PCs can play good games, but it's one thing to craft well-designed products and another thing entirely to think about they all work together.
Because that is what's happened over the past few decades of IT. Organisations have piled on the latest plug-and-play technology (Software or Hardware) and they've built up complex legacy systems that no one really knows how they all work together. They've lost track of how data flows across their organisation which makes the work of cybersecurity, disaster recovery, compliance and general business transformation teams a nightmare.
Some of these systems are entirely dependent on other systems to operate. But that dependency isn't documented. The vast majority of digital transformation projects fail because they get halfway through and realise they hadn't factored in a system that they thought was nothing but was vital to the organisation running.
And this isn't just for-profit organisations, this is the health services, this is national infrastructure, it's everyone.
There's not yet a single standard that says "This is how organisations should control, manage and govern their flows of data."
Why is that relevant to the companies that were affected by Crowd Strike? Would it have stopped it?
Maybe, maybe not. But considering the global impact, it doesn't look like many organisations were prepared for the possibility of a huge chunk of their IT infrastructure going down.
Understanding dataflows help with the preparation for events like this, so organisations can move to mitigate them, and also the recovery side when they do happen. Organisations need to understand which systems are a priority to get back operational and which can be left.
The problem I'm seeing from a lot of organisations at the moment is that they don't know which systems to recover first, and are losing money and reputation while they fight to get things back online. A lot of them are just winging it.
Conclusion of Part 1
Next time I can totally go into diagramming if any of you are interested in that.
How can any organisation actually map their dataflow and what things need to be considered to do so. It'll come across like common sense, but that's why an actual standard is so desperately needed!

I built a miniature Va11 Hall-A Bar inside of my PC!!
Va11 Hall-A PC Parts & Build list
PC:
CPU : Intel I9 14900k
GPU: Intel Arc A770 16gb
Ram: Corsair Dominator 64gb 5600
Mobo: Maxsun Terminator Z790 D5 wifi
Hard drives M.2: Samsung 990 pro 2tb, Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb, CT 1tb, Adata 500gb
PSU: ROG Thor 850 P2
Cables: Cablemod.com custom shortened and sleeved
Water loop distro : EKWB FLT 120 reservoir + D5 pump
Water loop cpu block: ThermalTake Pacific Mx2 Ultra
Water loop radiators: Alphacool HPE 20 x 2
Water loop hardware: 15 Alphacool, 3 EKWB, 2 Alphacool soft, 2 granzon
Water loop tubes: EKWB Acrylic tube 14mm, Alphacool 13/10 soft
Air Cooling : ThermalTake Toughfan 120mm x 3 + Controller
Air Cooling : Noctua 40mm pwm server fan x 2 (non visible)
Additional RGB Control : Coolermaster controller
Case:
Lian Li PC V600, left side mount, released in 2006, I acquired it in 2015 from PC Recycle in sodo Seattle.
I had to track down a new foot, one had been missing since I acquired the case (ebay)
Mods:These are the case mods I did personally
Cut a hole for the cpu mounts in the Motherboard mount plate as this case was designed for older hardware
Cut two 120mm blowholes and added aluminum covers (Dremel)
Cut Front and rear windows into side panels (Dremel Max)
Moved PSU from vertical placement in the lower right side of the case in front of the CPU to horizontal placement in the top left in old drive bays.
The PSU bracket had to be cut to show the OLED on the side.
Modded the side panel rail slide to accommodate the PSU, I used the original aluminum stand the psu was on, cut in half and epoxied with JB weld.
Changed and moved Power/ Reset switch to the back of the case, shortened and spliced the cable
I cut and bent my own 14mm acrylic tubes (hobby miter, heat gun).
Cut and made two way mirror for the front panel
Plastic "truss" is both functional and aesthetic. It came from a Gunpla accessory kit and has two cables passing through it and it acts as the GPU support. I could only get red and had to paint it.
Notice that some logos are missing/ covered, I dislike having a case as an advertisement. The Rog eye on the PSU is mostly covered but iykyk, most of the word "Intel" on the ARC GPU, Two of the Thermaltake logos on the fan edges, the Paint on the Thermaltake Mx2 Ultra and Maxsun terminator heatsink. (I will eventually cover the visible SSD with a heat sink, cover the fan info on the rear and work a cover for the word "dominator"). the one logo explicitly unchanged is the LianLi case badge, if I think of a perfect replacement, maybe then.
Mod I did not do:
I did NOT shorten and sleeve my own cables, I used cable-mod.com. I am not confident in my ability to do this.
BAR:
"Bar Tiny" Re-ment sets from Japan, 17 sets involved.
I customized the color of the bar and chairs and shortened one table for the mezzanine. The whole bar, minus barback- is on a removable 7 inch piece of black acrylic for cleaning.
Jill Stingray Nendoroid
Jils Cat, it sleeps on the GPU
Jill Stool: Jill is glued to a cute doll stool to see over the bar
Jill Accessories non-Nendoroid: cellphone, purse, coat (ebay)
Dorothy Haze Nendoroid
will be added on release.
Bar Back:I made this myself
Black acrylic sheet, and frosted acrylic rods.
Doll Light power kit: 8 Led lights, 4 incandescent lights
USB Doll light power strip
Other Bar Accessories:
Overhead Hanging farmhouse light
trash, mop, broom, pan, mop bucket,
2 blue fuzzy chairs
Miniature plants
Miniature Microphone
Mini bottle Dom Perignon, an xmas gift from my friend nemo, it's
on the top shelf
Problems and changes:
1. ARGB, pretty pretty pain in the ass. 4 pieces of software........
2. The water loop was changed extensively as hardware came in and space limitations were discovered. The biggest change is that I originally planned to have one radiator on the front of the case, the tubes running over Jills head and to light the tubes as lighting for the bar, to do this the fan would have been in the case proper pushing the whole bar to far into the mobo, it didn't work, so the loop was moved to the top of the case and caused me to have one complex bent tube
Second, I had planned the loop to use one sideport on the distro, but space limitation moved both ports to the top causing the complex fittings setup in that corner.
3. The MOBO, sigh. This has been clearly the most challenging choice I made in this build, I really wanted it to work perfectly too, but I rolled those dice because: Aesthetic+function, the board I wanted (https://en.colorful.cn/en/home/product?mid=84&id=400d19bc-5655-49e1-b391-df00b60935ef) was to great a risk for the cost. This was a silver medal.
I generally dislike the design options I had in the Z790 series of the big board makers (I HATE big logos), especially the full ATX, there was one M that interested me, I should have picked it . This board has potential, but the BIOS is underdeveloped and compatibility has been problematic, I had to do a tricky outdated style BIOS update right from the box, and have had to reset the cmos a couple times. It skips BIOS on general boot and though stable, it will have to be addressed eventually, it doesn't have a proper sleep because of some issue between uefi & legacy. It may end up replaced, which will require a full build teardown.
the Turbo fan built into the board doesn't seem to function
Alos, the two argb connections on the mobo dont work, or I can't get them to recognize anything, necessitating the Coolermaster controller for the PSU and Distro. it is shoved behind the distro along with a Noctua 40mm

through the screen
Lando Norris x Amelie Dayman
Summary: As Lando relaxes with Max after a ski trip, a simple gaming stream turns into a heartfelt moment when he tunes in to watch Amelie on the premiere carpet for Wicked.
Wordcount: 2.1 k
Warnings: just fluff
full masterlist // request over here!
December 21st, 2024 - London, United Kingdom
Lando plopped himself down on Max Fewtrell’s worn-in leather couch, a steaming mug of tea balanced precariously in his hand. His legs stretched out, brushing against Max’s coffee table, which was littered with empty soda cans, a half-eaten pizza, and one of Max’s hoodies.
—You could at least pretend to clean up when you’ve got company,—Lando teased, giving Max a pointed look.
—Mate, you’re not company, you practically live here,— Max shot back, settling down beside him with a bowl of crisps. —Besides, you’re just here to freeload my Wi-Fi and stream. Don’t act high and mighty.—
Lando rolled his eyes but grinned, sipping his tea. They’d just gotten back from his ski trip, and while it had been a blast, he was exhausted. Still, nothing sounded better than unwinding with Max and streaming a bit for the fans.
—Alright, let’s get this started,— Max said, booting up his PC and launching the streaming software. —You’re lucky I’m letting you hijack my setup.—
—Don’t pretend you don’t love it,— Lando replied, leaning over to adjust his camera. Within minutes, the stream was live, and the chat began exploding with messages.
—Alright, alright, calm down, chat. Yes, I’m back. Yes, I survived the ski trip,— Lando said, settling into his usual streaming energy. —Barely, though. Max here almost took me out with his shit skiing.—
—Oi! I was great,— Max interjected, shoving a handful of crisps into his mouth.
—Sure, mate. You were great at falling on your arse every five minutes,— Lando shot back, smirking.
The chat lit up with laughter emojis and comments, and Max pretended to glare at the screen.
—Right, let’s see what we’ve got lined up for today. Bit of gaming, maybe some Q&A. Keep it chill,— Max said, clicking through a few settings.
But as they got started, a notification popped up on Lando’s phone. He glanced at it, then froze, his eyes widening.
—Oh, shit,— he muttered.
—What?— Max asked, leaning over.
—The Wicked New York premiere is starting. Ames is probably on the carpet right now,— Lando said, his voice softening as he pulled up the livestream on his phone.
Max gave him a knowing look. —You want me to put it up on the big screen?—
—You read my mind,— Lando said, his grin spreading as Max switched the stream to the TV.
The chat exploded again.
“He’s so whipped.”“Lando’s about to start simping.”“Can’t blame him. Amelie is stunning.”
As the stream began showing the yellow carpet, Lando leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, his gaze glued to the screen. When Amelie appeared, her glittering gown catching the lights, he let out an audible breath.
—That’s my girl,— he said softly, almost to himself.
—Here we go,— Max teased, nudging him. —Full simp mode activated.—
—Shut up, mate. Look at her. She’s…— Lando trailed off, shaking his head with a smile that practically lit up the room. —She’s unreal. How is she real?—
The chat was going crazy, with fans spamming heart emojis and comments like:
“LAN IS WHIPPED.”“Couple goals, honestly.”“Protect this man at all costs.”
Max laughed, tossing a crisp at Lando. —You’re acting like you’ve never seen her before.—
—I haven’t seen her in person for a week, alright?— Lando said dramatically, leaning back against the couch. —And she’s been busy with this press tour and all these premieres. She looks amazing. She always does, but this… bloody hell.—
Max shook his head, laughing. —You’re unbelievable, mate. Absolutely gone for her.—
—Damn right I am,— Lando said proudly. He pointed at the screen as Amelie waved at the fans and posed for photos. —That’s my girlfriend. Mine. I still can’t believe it sometimes.—
—We know, mate. Trust me, we know,— Max said, grinning.
The chat, meanwhile, was eating it up.
“He’s literally glowing just talking about her.”“The way he’s staring at the screen tho 😭.”“Amelie better watch this later. He’s so proud.”
Lando leaned back, letting out a content sigh. —You know what’s funny? I don’t even care if the chat thinks I’m being dramatic. I miss her like crazy. I mean, it’s only been a week, but it feels like months.—
—You two were glued at the hip for a month straight before this, mate. What did you expect?— Max teased.
—Yeah, but it’s different now. We’ve got this rhythm, you know? We’re both busy, but we make it work. And when we’re together… it’s just easy. Feels like we’ve been doing this forever,— Lando said, his tone softening.
Max gave him a genuine smile. —You’ve got it bad, Lan. But it suits you.—
—Thanks, I think?— Lando replied, chuckling. He glanced at the chat and grinned. —Alright, chat. Say what you want, but I’ll never shut up about her. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.—
The chat lit up again, with messages like:
“He’s so in love, it’s insane.”“Amelie is one lucky woman, but honestly, so is Lando.”“We love a supportive boyfriend.”
As the stream continued, Lando and Max kept the premiere playing in the background. Every time Amelie appeared on screen, Lando would light up, pointing out little things like how she adjusted her dress or how she smiled at a fan.
—You’re going to see her tomorrow, aren’t you?— Max asked, trying to suppress a grin.
—Yeah, but not soon enough,— Lando said, running a hand through his hair. —And then we’re spending Christmas in Mexico with her family. Can’t bloody wait.—
—Better get ready for her brothers to give you shit,— Max said, laughing.
—I’ve survived worse. Besides, they like me now. Mostly,— Lando replied, smirking.
Max laughed, shaking his head. —You’re so whipped, mate. But honestly? Good for you.—
Lando just grinned, his eyes flicking back to the screen. —Yeah. Good for me.—

Later that night, after the stream had ended and Max was in the kitchen rummaging around for something sweet, Lando’s phone buzzed on the armrest beside him.
His heart leapt when he saw the name.
Ames💛 calling…
He answered instantly, barely able to hide his grin. —Hey, baby.—
The screen filled with Amelie’s face, glowing under soft hotel lighting, her makeup still flawless from the premiere but her expression cozy and tired. She was in a plush white robe, hair loosely pinned back, a few curls falling around her cheeks.
—Hi, Lan,— she said, her voice warm and sleepy. —Did you watch it?—
—Are you joking? I watched the whole thing. Made Max put it on the big screen. You looked… fuck, Ames. You were glowing.—
She beamed, ducking her head a little. —Stop. You’re biased.—
—Biased? Maybe. But still right,— he murmured, leaning back into the couch. —You looked like a goddess in that dress. I nearly dropped my tea.—
In the background, Max shouted from the kitchen, —He did drop his tea. Burned his thigh like an idiot.—
—Oh my god,— Amelie laughed, hand over her mouth. —You didn’t!—
—It was worth it,— Lando said with a sheepish grin.
She melted into a giggle, the kind that made his chest tighten. Then she shifted the phone slightly, and he caught a better angle of the robe slipping just enough to reveal her collarbone, a hint of her chest.
Lando’s brain short-circuited.
He blinked. Swallowed. Tried to look normal.
He failed.
—Lan?— Amelie asked, eyes twinkling. —You good?—
—Yeah, yeah, m’fine. Just... Jesus Christ,— he muttered, adjusting how he was sitting. —You can’t just FaceTime me looking like that when you’re thousands of miles away. It’s not fair.—
She tilted her head innocently. —Like what? I’m in a robe. It’s hotel-issue. Very PG.—
—PG my arse,— he groaned, dragging a hand down his face. —You’re in a robe. Your legs are probably bare. You’re glowing. Your voice is all soft. This is dangerous.—
—You’re ridiculous,— she teased, but her smile said she knew exactly what she was doing. —I miss you. Wish you were here. My hotel bed is lonely. And massive.—
Lando’s eyes darkened. —Ames… stop.—
—Stop what?— she said sweetly, eyes wide with false innocence. —I didn’t say anything inappropriate.—
He stared at her. —You’re evil. And you know exactly what you’re doing.—
—You mean being in my robe and talking to my boyfriend? Sounds pretty standard to me,— she replied, biting her lip.
Max wandered back in with a slice of cake, catching the screen over Lando’s shoulder. —Is she doing the robe thing again?—
—Yes, she’s doing the robe thing again,— Lando snapped, not taking his eyes off her.
Max cackled and plopped down beside him. —Mate, you’re literally vibrating. Chill.—
—How am I supposed to chill when she looks like that and says stuff like “my bed is lonely” like she doesn’t know what it does to me?—
Amelie blinked innocently. —I just wanted to say goodnight.—
Lando groaned. Max was howling now.
—You're in hell, mate,— Max wheezed between bites of cake. —Actual hell. Honestly, I respect it. She’s got you fully under her thumb.—
—You think I don’t know that?— Lando muttered, eyes still locked on Amelie’s smirking face. —I’d let her destroy me.—
Amelie winked. —Good to know. Love you. Sweet dreams.—
And just like that, the screen went black.
Lando stared at his phone, jaw clenched.
Max nearly dropped his fork laughing. —You’re gonna combust before Christmas, aren’t you?—
—Shut up,— Lando groaned, throwing his head back against the couch.
But he was smiling. Glowing, even.
Absolutely, fully, devastatingly whipped.

How you go about doing line work ? is there anytips for mouse user like me ? because i'm suck :(((
i’m a mouse user as well on pc! use a low sensitivity / dpi if possible ( big mousemat and more desk space) and draw with your arm not your wrist for smoother lines
use pixel perfect mode if your software has it
also, just make a bad line and clean it up! pixel art is all about the cleanup and refinement process. mouse is an amazing precision tool

Hi Farfalla! I've always been curious but I can TELLL your mods folder is FILLED TO THE BRIM with custom content! which has me wondering what setup you use to play the sims as I have around 130gb of cc but cannot play the sims for even 30 SECONDS without lag :( so it would be really helpful to know your setup to hopefully help me with my problem.
Also! I would love to hear if you use any tips/softwares to help your gameplay run smoothly, like using the Sims Mod Manager/Sims 4 Studio or even using a hard drive for your cc!
Thank you! Hope you've have a good day!!! :)
Hi, you would 100% be correct that my mods folder is bursting out the seams. It is definitely due for a clean out.
I have my PC specs listed in my FAQ, and even with that my game still experiences lag, sometimes a lil bit of a longer load up time, etc. If you have as many mods as I do (nearing 300gb.........) it's expected and I'm not complaining. I'm more in CAS and Build/Buy than I ever am in gameplay so it doesn't bother me as much as it could others.
I do use Sims Mod Manager and Sims 4 Studio, but mostly it all comes down to keeping my actual mods folder organized and staying on top of updating mods when I do decide to update my game.
Hope this helps & I hope you have a lovely day as well!

Gun Powder and Sparks pt 2
It was maybe three months after Boothill had payed you a visit, and you had given up hope on ever seeing a dime from him. Your shop lay closed today as you wanted to work on a special project of yours. Today you were testing out to see if the circuits all worked they way you needed them too.
Your goggles over your eyes held firm as you stared to carefully insert the crystal he had dropped off when the door to the shop flew open. With a groan you set the gem down, your concentration shattered. Sliding back in your chair you took off your goggles, facing the intruder with a rather unamused look on your face.
In the doorway stood Boothill, his grin as sharp and pointy as usual. You crossed your arms, rather unamused by his whole entrance.
"Shop's closed" You practically sneered. "You better have my payment." You stuck out one hand.
Boothill's boots clicked against the shop floor as he placed credits in your hand. "I got more if yer willing to open up shop for me" He tilted his head and took off his hat, tossing it on your table.
"You just now payed me for the work I did three months ago, why in the name of the aeons would I work with you again?" You raised a brow.
"Well cuz you're the only person I'll go to repairs, annnd, I actually have credit this time" He placed one hand on his hip. "I wanna know more about ya too, ain't see many of ya around."
"What's that supposed to mean?" You got up from your seat, defensive.
"Well y/n it means I ain't see many others from a farming planet like mine. Now are ya gonna do the repairs or not? I'm overheating here" He complained.
"Over heating? Like your fan's are starting to break down or.. oh never mind" You shook your head and sighed as your curiosity got the better of you. You heard Boothill plop down on your chair with a satisficed grunt as you cleared off space on your desk, unaware that Boothill had his eyes on what you were doing with the energy crystal he had given you.
"okay" You pulled open a few drawers. "Now where are your fans located? Do you have multiple in several parts or are they all located in one because that could be the issu-" Boothill cut you off, the sound of a compartment hissing and opening grabbing your attention. You turned around to see him fanning himself with his hat, the panels of his chest wide open. You got closer, gently poking and prodding and getting a closer look.
You touched one of the fans, your brow furrowing. "Holy hell fires Boothill, I have questions. How in the world are you not short circting from all this heat, second how in the ever loving hell did your fans get so dirty?! I have to take them out to clean them." You walked over to a small sliver tube, pressing on the top before a holographic pc display came up.
As you typed away Boothill answered your questions. "Well, to be frank I ain't got a fudgin clue. I guess it just has been a while since I've had my hard-er, software?" he guessed.
"hardware" you corrected
"hardware looked at" Boothill shrugged. You sighed as you ordred a few parts and pressed the button again, the hologram dissapearing.
"Alright how long will you be in town for?"
"How ever long it takes to get fixed back up" Replied Boothill.
"Noted, works out in my favor." You replied, going through a drawer. Once again you pulled on your fingerless glove with the small pockets. You walked up, stuck your face as close as you could get, before nodding and mumbling to yourself and going back to your drawer. You missed the way the cowboy looked at your face, then looked away again.
You came back, glove full of tools and a head worn light and magnifying glass. You got on your knees, head up close to his open chest panels. Boothill swore he got hotter as you stared to work.
"How do ya even stand this here heat?" Boothill asked, looking away but curious.
"Simple really, ain't nothing compared to what it was like back home on Enbar." You explained, taking out one of his fans and cleaning it gently. He looked down at you again, a bit of red dusting his cheeks, something the both of you chalked up to the heat of having one of his fans removed, not the compromising position you were currently in.
You cleaned his fans, put him back together and shut his chest panels. You cleared your throat.
"Stay for a week, I got parts commin in for ya cowboy."
"Now the fork would you order parts for me?" He asked confused, "And why ain't you callin me by my name?"
"Well you ain't a dead cowboy, sure your mostly metal, but your still kicken'" You explained. "And extra fans so ya ain't gotta' come back to me overheatin' again."
Boothill tipped his hat. "Tell me more about Enbar when I'm back?" He dropped payment on your work table. You nodded and shooed the cyborg cowboy out of your workshop.
The week when he came back, you added some fans to his back. He was laying on your work table, something you were surprised that you both could hold his weight and that you even had enough space for him as he was quite the tall man.
His back panels were open and you had brought in a pillow for his head. He laid still so you could work without issue.
"say, y/n" Started Boothill. "Tell me more about Enbar?"
You sighed and obliged him as you worked. "Enbar, long gone by now. Stellaron disaster. Hot planet, heard it been compared to hell its self before. Hot, dry, mostly farm and cattle land. Home to few tradesmen out of nessicity." You stared. "Land rollin as far as the eye could see" You looked at Boothill, making sure he was okay, only to see a faraway look in his eyes, you knew his home was something similar. You turned back to your work.
"Ma was a ranch hand, pa was a tradesmen. One day Ma wanted to leave, got on this giant train with people who called themselves nameless. Pa and I stayed behind, took after the trade with my Pa"
You stopped talking, not wanting to say anymore as Boothill nodded his head. The two of you worked in silence, you just focused, and him going over how similar your planets were, yet also how different they were. It was something to him, seemed like looking into a mirror, just at a different angle. The upbringing was similar, yet so very different.
A few hours later, you woke the cowboy up who had managed to drift off to sleep while you were working to tell him repairs and fan installation was done.
"Thanks again y/n" He tossed payment on the table and tipped his hat. "Till next time yeah?"
"Sure space cowboy"
He smirked his dangerous toothy grin and waved walking out the door.

If you're doom-scrolling, knock that off.
Okay, do you all remember the advice we gave about doom-scrolling during Covid? It applies now, too. This is a slow apocalypse, pace yourself. There is no advantage to knowing the bad news or the good news hours before anybody else.
So if you need to install software on your phone or PC to throttle your access to news, do so. Maybe set up separate accounts for your Tumblr or BlueSky political and national news follows, and only check them once a day, too. Instead, find something that has nothing to do with the news to do with at least some of your time.
I'd say "go outside and touch grass" but it's January, so, I don't know, have a wank and a nap or something. Steam clean your floors. Hit the gym. Snuggle your pet(s). Anything that grounds you in your body.

Gonna rant for a moment but I find it hilarious how Nintendo doesn't want the Switch 2 to fail... yet slaps those prices on the games
The switch 2 it's being like $450 is somewhat understandable, it's way more advanced compared to the old switch in so many ways so a bigger price tag is expected... but the games being 80-90 bucks?? Hell frickin no! Like I get the exuse could be that a more higher resolution and detailed game could go for more... till you look at games like Horizon Forbidden West and Astro Bot
At GameStop, HFW complete edition (as seen online) goes for $45. And that game has people being character models for the animation to be better! Not to mention the high resolution that can cause PCs to crash if they don't have the proper hardware or software!
And Astro Bot, the game that loves its physics and everything looks so clean and detailed and has bots from almost every franchise you could think of that Sony published, goes for $55 at GameStop (again as seen online).
The difference between those two is that Horizon has the unfortunate luck of being launched riiiiiight next to a major game (iirc it got launched around when Elden Ring did?) But both are still fantastic in their own way.
YET MY POINT STANDS BOTH GAMES ARE VERY DETAILED AND HIGH RESOLUTION YET COST LESS THAN $60, NINTENDO YOU'RE ACTIVELY SCAMMING US AND FORCING THE SWITCH 2 TO FAIL BEFORE IT'S EVEN OUT!! AUUUGH

Are Game Blogs Uniquely Lost?
All this started with my looking for the old devlog of Storyteller. I know at some point it was linked from the blogroll on the Braid devlog. Then I tried to look at on old devlog of another game that is still available. The domain for Storyteller is still active. The devblog is gone.
I tried an old bookmark from an old PC (5 PCs ago, I think). It was a web site linked to pixel art and programming tutorials. Instead of linking to the pages directly, some links link led to a twitter threads by authors that collected their work posted on different sites. Some twitter threads are gone because the users were were suspended, or had deleted their accounts voluntarily. Others had deleted old tweets. There was no archive. I have often seen links accompanied by "Here's a thread where $AUTHOR lists all his writing on $TOPIC". I wonder if the sites are still there, and only the tweets are gone.
A lot of "games studies" around 2010 happened on blogs, not in journals. Games studies was online-first, HTML-first, with trackbacks, tags, RSS and comment sections. The work that was published in PDF form in journals and conference proceedings is still there. The blogs are gone. The comment sections are gone. Kill screen daily is gone.
I followed a link from critical-distance.com to a blog post. That blog is gone. The domain is for sale. In the Wayback Machine, I found the link. It pointed to the comment section of another blog. The other blog has removed its comment sections and excluded itself from the Wayback Machine.
I wonder if games stuff is uniquely lost. Many links to game reviews at big sites lead to "page not found", but when I search the game's name, I can find the review from back in 2004. The content is still there, the content management systems have been changed multiple times.
At least my favourite tumblr about game design has been saved in the Wayback Machine: Game Design Tips.
To make my point I could list more sites, more links, 404 but archived, or completely lost, but when I look at small sites, personal sites, blogs, or even forums, I wonder if this is just confirmation bias. There must be all this other content, all these other blogs and personal sites. I don't know about tutorials for knitting, travel blogs, stamp collecting, or recipe blogs. I usually save a print version of recipes to my Download folder.
Another big community is fan fiction. They are like modding, but for books, I think. I don't know if a lot of fan fiction is lost to bit rot and link rot either. What is on AO3 will probably endure, but a lot might have gone missing when communities fandom moved from livejournal to tumblr to twitter, or when blogs moved from Wordpress to Medium to Substack.
I have identified some risk factors:
Personal home pages made from static HTML can stay up for while if the owner meticulously catalogues and links to all their writing on other sites, and if the site covers a variety of interests and topics.
Personal blogs or content management systems are likely to lose content in a software upgrade or migration to a different host.
Writing is more likely to me lost when it's for-pay writing for a smaller for-profit outlet.
A cause for sudden "mass extinction" of content is the move between social networks, or the death of a whole platform. Links to MySpace, Google+, Diaspora, and LiveJournal give me mostly or entirely 404 pages.
In the gaming space, career changes or business closures often mean old content gets deleted. If an indie game is wildly successful, the intellectual property might ge acquired. If it flops, the domain will lapse. When development is finished, maybe the devlog is deleted. When somebody reviews games at first on Steam, then on a blog, and then for a big gaming mag, the Steam reviews might stay up, but the personal site is much more likely to get cleaned up. The same goes for blogging in general, and academia. The most stable kind of content is after hours hobbyist writing by somebody who has a stable and high-paying job outside of media, academia, or journalism.
The biggest risk factor for targeted deletion is controversy. Controversial, highly-discussed and disseminated posts are more likely to be deleted than purely informative ones, and their deletion is more likely to be noticed. If somebody starts a discussion, and then later there are hundreds of links all pointing back to the start, the deletion will hurt more and be more noticeable. The most at-risk posts are those that are supposed to be controversial within a small group, but go viral outside it, or the posts that are controversial within a small group, but then the author says something about politics that draws the attention of the Internet at large to their other writings.
The second biggest risk factor for deletion is probably usefulness combined with hosting costs. This could also be the streetlight effect at work, like in the paragraph above, but the more traffic something gets, the higher the hosting costs. Certain types of content are either hard to monetise, and cost a lot of money, or they can be monetised, so the free version is deliberately deleted.
The more tech-savvy users are, the more likely they are to link between different sites, abandon a blogging platform or social network for the next thing, try to consolidate their writings by deleting their old stuff and setting up their own site, only to let the domain lapse. The more tech-savvy users are, the more likely they are to mess with the HTML of their templates or try out different blogging software.
If content is spread between multiple sites, or if links link to social network posts that link to blog post with a comment that links to a reddit comment that links to a geocities page, any link could break. If content is consolidated in a forum, maybe Archive team could save all of it with some advance notice.
All this could mean that indie games/game design theory/pixel art resources are uniquely lost, and games studies/theory of games criticism/literary criticism applied to games are especially affected by link rot. The semi-professional, semi-hobbyist indie dev, the writer straddling the line between academic and reviewer, they seem the most affected. Artists who start out just doodling and posting their work, who then get hired to work on a game, their posts are deleted. GameFAQs stay online, Steam reviews stay online, but dev logs, forums and blog comment sections are lost.
Or maybe it's only confirmation bias. If I was into restoring old cars, or knitting, or collecting stamps, or any other thing I'd think that particular community is uniquely affected by link rot, and I'd have the bookmarks to prove it.
Figuring this out is important if we want to make predictions about the future of the small web, and about the viability of different efforts to get more people to contribute. We can't figure it out now, because we can't measure the ground truth of web sites that are already gone. Right now, the small web is mostly about the small web, not about stamp collecting or knitting. If we really manage to revitalise the small web, will it be like the small web of today except bigger, the web-1.0 of old, or will certain topics and communities be lost again?

On Boot Failures
Headlines everywhere on Friday, the 19th of July, 2024 were about the massive computer outages caused by a faulty update to the CrowdStrike antivirus software. It seems some config file choked up a kernel module causing Windows machines to fail with the infamous Blue Screen of Death.
I recently started a new job and was perhaps a little smug in the fact that in my new job I am no longer responsible for hundreds of endpoints running CrowdStrike.
Karma's a bitch though.
I shut down my home PC Friday night to install a memory upgrade and after powering it back on I was met with the very same Blue Screen of Death.
"A critical process died" it told me, with no information about what said process actually was.
And no log files.
And no dump files.
System Restore failed. sfc /scannow failed. dism /cleanup-image failed. Everything I could find failed. I couldn't even just reinstall Windows over the existing installation because apparently that requires being already booted into the OS that currently isn't running.
The log files from dism led me to believe the problem might be related to registry corruption, but my attempts at replacing system registry files with clean ones from an install wim were not successful.
I was grasping at straws. Starting from scratch with a clean install is daunting and would have set me back weeks. I was contemplating pulling out an old SSD and just running with Linux Mint for a while.
Through desperation, I downloaded Hiren's BootCD PE so I could poke around a little more. None of the tools included there were able to resolve the issue either, but just having access to a standard Explorer shell and a web browser helped.
Finally I came across ShadowCopyView, a program that can explore the System Restore images that Windows (can) take regularly. In one last desperate effort, I moved out all of the system registry files from C:\Windows\System32\config and used ShadowCopyView to replace them with copies from an automatic restore point the previous Monday.
That actually did the trick. I was able to reboot into my primary Windows partition and sign in like normal.
I have no idea what may have been lost in a few days of registry updates, and I have no idea what may have caused the problem to begin with. But I am happy I was able to find something in the end that would get me back into my system without having to reinstall everything from scratch.
... Although maybe I should anyway.
And should anyone encounter something similar in the future, these were the kind of errors I was seeing that a Google search wasn't really coming up with anything useful:
dism.log: failed to open registry root
dism.log: failed to query for path to user profiles directory
dism.log: failed to load the default user profile registry hive
dism.log: failed to load offline store from boot directory
srttrail.txt: pending package install
strtrail.txt: boot manager generic failure
