You know, as a young ish person who's grown up in a primarily digital world, there's something really grounding about spending time with people older than my parents. Went to a Guild activity last night and it was delightful being with the older ladies there.
Someone offered to drive me home because it was over an hour back to my house by public transit. We're in a city, and she took me back to my home by driving through neighborhoods and back roads, in the dark, to a place she hasn't visited in four years, without a GPS (before I gave her a landmark to drop me off at, I gave her my exact address and she got frustrated with the search engine and said she would just use the paper map in her car).
A few weeks ago, I had dinner with a friend's parent's coworker/boss/friend, and she told me I would learn to find my way around and would know the area like a native. It strikes me that this is what she meant, but she wasn't right--if I were to live here for years and go about it as I had been doing, I wouldn't get native knowledge of the area because I would just be relying on GPS and not actually navigating. If I want to really learn the area, I have to pay attention in a way I only learned how to do (and rarely use) because I spent six months in a foreign country without a smartphone or computer.
The lady who drove me home said something to the effect of "you're new to the area so you won't criticize the route I take. I'm just going to take the way I know so I won't get lost." What I don't think she realized is that even if I had been here for years, I wouldn't criticize the route she took, because I lived in my last area for six years and didn't even learn the name of the highway I took weekly. Stupid GPS brain.
So I'm going to Guild meetings for a Formal Skill, but there's all sorts of other basic, hidden life things that I wouldn't learn on my own. It's also been striking to realize that there's a major gap in expectations about how people operate in the world. Nobody above a certain age who's talked to me about the routes I take seems to realize that I don't actually know the names of roads and exits, or that it's possible to get around. I don't want to continue in ignorance, but if I did, I could get around in a smartphone, live here for probably ten years, and only learn about four street names.

Playtest draft 0.4 of Space Gerbils is up. I wasn't going to cut it here, but then I realised that I'd re-written the same page three times in as many days, which is usually a pretty good sign that I need to pump the brakes and talk to other people about it!
Nearly every part of every chapter has undergone substantial rewrites, so a complete changelog may take some time to prepare, but the highlights include:
Updated character creation, including nearly twice as many mech suit upgrades, and support for random space gerbil proficiencies; also, you now have to draw a picture of your space gerbil
Cleanup of protocol scopes and phase cycle workflow, including the removal of mandatory Threat Clocks and drastically simplified scene-ending triggers
Stress and conditions persisting across scenes deprecated in favour of new mechanics for handling long-term damage
Split downtime and away missions into two separate rules modules
Reorganised supplementary playsheets, and created form-fillable interactive versions where applicable (assuming your PDF reader software supports that kind of thing)
Additional print-and-play minifigs and interior illustrations by @artkaninchenbau (including the one up top!); minifigs now include lineart-only versions in case you want to colour them yourself
New mech suit schematics by @pencilbrony
Finally, by repeated popular request, there is now a Penguin King Games Discord server for submitting support inquiries and playtest feedback. I reserve the right to repost any interesting comments or feedback submitted there to other social media platforms for better visibility – don't say I didn't warn you!
As always, questions, criticisms, and bizarre flames are both welcome and encouraged.

Z-library alternatives
So z-library is down, which is an absolute tragedy, but for those looking here's a list of alternatives under the cut.
Books
Open Library: this works like an actual library, where there's a waiting list and you can borrow books for x time.
Library Genesis: my personal favourite of the ones in this list, both for entertainment or academic books. Here you can download epubs or other formats, and there's a great ISBN search function.
Sci-Hub: this is for research papers, but you have to type the exact title of what you're looking for.
IT eBooks: books on IT and programming.
Ubooquity: has to be installed to use.
Simon & Schuster: I haven't actually tried this one, but it has a mailing list which you have to sign up to in order to get the books.
eBooks 3000: this doesn't have that many options and there are some pop up ads.
PDF Drive: there's no limits or ads, but it only has PDF formats.
Read Any Book: here you can read books online or download them.
The Eye: sort of an archive with pretty much everything, but you can't search things here, and it's tough to navigate. I think they have audiobooks too.
Audiobooks
Audiobook Bay: here you can download audiobooks.
Booksonic: this is for audiobook streaming, and you have to download the app or install the software on your computer.
Tokybook: this one has many options, and it's easy to navigate.
I know none of these are as good as z-library was, but hopefully they'll do the trick. This could really help people, so pass it on and add if you have more!

Chitimacha
Chitimacha is a Native American language of Louisiana that was spoken until the death of its last two native speakers, Ben (1934) & Delphine (1940), pictured here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, a linguist named Morris Swadesh (pictured) worked with Ben & Delphine to write down 120 Chitimacha stories and create a basic dictionary before they died.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, the Chitimacha tribe is revitalizing their language using those archival materials. They’ve created Rosetta Stone language learning software for Chitimacha, have daily language and culture classes in the tribal school, and have put up bilingual English-Chitimacha signs in many places.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last week, I visited the Chitimacha reservation to run a workshop for the language teachers. We practiced many different pronunciation and grammar details, but also coined many new words! Here are a few we came up with:
Neymank Waxta ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’ (literally ‘people of the land’s day')
gaspam ‘refrigerator’ (literally ‘thing that causes it to be cold’)
pexpa patsi ‘volleyball’ = pexpa ‘cause to fly’ + patsi ‘ball’
huuta qapx kudihn ‘kayak’ (literally ‘boat closed in on itself’)
Chitimacha has a unique spelling system:
⟨b, d, g, dz, j⟩ are ejective consonants /pʼ, tʼ, kʼ, t͡sʼ, t͡ʃʼ/
⟨q⟩ is a glottal stop /ʔ/
⟨x⟩ is the palato-alveolar fricative /ʃ/
You can read more about the Chitimacha language in my forthcoming book chapter, available here:

The Journey of The Tarot Haiku
I: The Magician - Resources
I used a variety of tools and resources in creating the book, so I thought I would share the most important ones.
At one point I purchased Scrivener because I heard good things about it, and initially I was planning to use it to create the book, only to discover that it didn't support the type of layout I wanted to design. I was stubborn, however, and decided to use it anyway because the way you can create folders and pages in it really appealed to the creature in me that wanted to squirrel away the poems like nuts for the winter. I also used it to manually keep track of my progress, and I still love opening it to go through all the folders.
To make sure the syllable count was accurate, I used this Syllable Counter to double check as I was typing down the poems. I tried others, but some of them were inconsistent, and this one was really easy to use!
I used to draw extensively and did digital art, and in the course of looking for software, I purchased Clip Studio Paint, which can be used for digital art as well as designing printable volumes like comics and zines. I was first and foremost going to concentrate on the Tarot cards in my poetry project, but eventually decided to supplement them with more poems explaining the fundamentals of reading and understanding the Tarot, so the next step was to create some digital illustrations to accompany those. I ended up learning about vector art because I wanted to create crisp images that could be resized if needed, and then went on to design the original manuscript using CSP. For the longest time I thought I would be using that for publication, but it did not have a working Table of Contents and I worried that any reformatting might take it apart, so I didn't use the manuscript, just the digital illustrations I made.
The Rider-Waite Tarot Deck is a registered trademark of U.S. Games Systems, Inc., but the illustrations are technically public domain, so you can use them for different projects and products. Because I wanted to feature the cards in my book but I only had access to a Hungarian language version of the deck (and so my scans would have shown Hungarian text), I purchased a set of high quality scans of the original Rider-Waite Tarot from ElementalEmpress on Etsy. I first used these in my project proposal and later in the manuscript.
In some of my posts, you might have noticed a Tower mandala watermark. I commissioned the design from Mixtichin - check out their Square Space or their Ko-fi if you want cool mandala designs! (The holofoil effect was my doing.)
I ultimately decided to self-publish by signing up to Kindle Direct Publishing, and there I downloaded Kindle Create in order to prepare my manuscript for publishing. This was the point where I realized that my original manuscript created in CSP might not survive a reformatting and the non-functional Table of Contents would be irritating, so I fired up Microsoft Word and recreated the entire manuscript from scratch. Thankfully I figured out how to do upside down text in it, which is how the ebook retains the original ergodic layout. I had to convert it to PDF using the built-in conversion function because Kindle Create is very fickle and will not sometimes recognize completely legitimate DOCX files, but that turned out to be for the best because I had an image heavy layout and could thus use the Print Replica option. Kindle Create is kind of vital for KDP projects because it will take care of things like borders, trim, bleed, etc. and when I got the hang of it, submitting the paperback and hardcover became much easier.
Last but not least, I used this website to convert PNG to PDF because KDP asked for the cover to be submitted as a PDF, but whenever I tried to open the PNG and use the convert to PDF option in the menu, it came out the wrong size. Once I converted it using the above linked site, however, the size was perfect and I could proceed with publication!
This is all I could think of for this post - see you next time!

The Step-by-Step Guide to Freely Editing PDFs on Your Chromebook
INTRODUCTION
To extract text from photos or PDF files, it is possible to use Wine to run an offline OCR application on Chromebooks. (how to edit pdf file)
Tumblr media
This will allow you to do so. On the other hand, if you want to digitally sign a document, add text or photos to a PDF, or perform any of these things, you will need a PDF editor on your Chromebook. To our great relief, functionality for PDF annotation was only recently enabled by Google to the native Gallery app. You are able to do fundamental edits to PDFs with this capability even if it is currently in its most basic version. In this article, we have demonstrated how to edit PDF files on a Chromebook without incurring any additional costs. In addition to that, we have provided information about a third-party tool that enables you to read, make changes to, and sign PDFs using Chromebooks. In light of this, let's get acquainted with the process of editing PDF files on a Chromebook.
Chromebook users will soon be able to edit PDF files.
We've included two other ways to edit PDF files on a Chromebook in this lesson that you can check out. Both of these approaches are available to you at no cost, and a wide variety of resources are at your disposal.
Use a Chromebook to make edits to PDF files. Utilizing the In-Device Gallery Application
In order to use the Gallery app to edit PDF files, the Chromebook you're using must be running Chrome OS 104 or a later version. Recent changes made by Google to its native Gallery app include the addition of new features such as PDF annotation, the ability to add text and signatures, and more. Having said that, the actions that need to be followed are as follows.
Tumblr media
1. Launch the Files app, then double-click the PDF file that you wish to edit in the app's navigation pane. It will open the PDF file in the Gallery app if you leave it as the default setting. You can also right-click on the PDF file, then select "Open With -> Gallery" from the context menu that appears.
2. The next step, which is optional depending on whether you want to input text or fill out a form, is to click on the "Tt" symbol located in the top menu bar of the program.
3. After that, a new menu will appear in the sidebar on the right. You have the ability to select the font, size, alignment, formatting, and color from this location. You are free to proceed with adding a text box to the PDF file at this time.
4. In the event that you want to sign a PDF document or annotate a PDF, click on the "Annotate" symbol (it looks like a squiggly line) that is located in the top menu bar.
5. At this point, select either a pen, a highlighter, or an eraser from the sidebar on the right. You may also choose the color of the pen as well as the size of the pen to make it uniquely yours. When you are finished, click the "Save" button in the upper right corner, and that's it!

Use a Chromebook to make edits to PDF files. Using a Program Provided by a Third Party
Smallpdf is one of the greatest web programs that you can use on your Chromebook to swiftly edit PDF files. Although there are numerous third-party PDF editors, Smallpdf is one of the best. You can add text and annotations to your PDF files, but you can also convert them to other formats, merge files, compress PDF files, and do a great deal more.
Having said that, Smallpdf restricts users to a maximum of two free edits per day for their papers. If you have reached your free storage limit, you can try using another web software that is comparable to this one called Sejda (visit) or SodaPDF (visit). Having said that, the following is a guide that will show you how to edit PDF files on a Chromebook without spending any money.
Tumblr media
1. Navigate to the official website of Smallpdf (click here to visit) and upload the PDF file you wish to modify.
2. After that, you will have the ability to add text, annotate, highlight, and insert photos into documents, as well as electronically sign them. When you are finished, click the "Export" button in the upper right corner.
3. If you wish to execute other operations in addition to converting the PDF file, you can access the extensive variety of tools that Smallpdf offers from this location.
Chrome OS devices now include the ability to annotate and sign PDF files.
On Chromebooks, these two methods are the most straightforward and straightforward ways to edit and annotate PDF documents. Smallpdf is my go-to PDF editor since it offers a wide variety of useful features and functions, many of which are on par with those offered by specialized desktop software. On the other hand, the incorporation of PDF annotation capabilities into the native Gallery app is a step in the right direction, and you should give it a shot.
SEE ALSO : how to check Fastag balance
In any case, if you have a Chromebook and are seeking for the greatest sketching apps, you can find them on the curated list that we have provided by clicking on the link provided below. In addition, we have compiled a comprehensive list for you to peruse in order to find Chrome OS applications that are both innovative and impressive. In addition, please let us know in the comment section below if there are any questions you have regarding Chromebooks.

Write Your First Adventure Lesson 2: Setting a Project Scope
So the main activity for this day was to write a "scope reflection": a document summarizing the scope of my adventure, my challenges, and my plans for it. Here are the questions and my responses:
What is this project and what is the final deliverable? (Eg. "I'm writing a one-shot adventure set in Ravenloft. It will be a PDF document available on DMs Guild.") I'm writing a one-shot RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha adventure set in Sartar. It will be a PDF document available on the Jonstown Compendium.
When does this project need to be completed?
November 30. Well, wait, no; that's when the workshop ends but maybe I'll do a little tweaking and formatting afterward. I guess the absolute deadline is December 8 if I want my adventure to be included in the RPG Writer Workshop Bundle, which I do.
Do you need to learn a new skill or tool to complete this project?
Well, two of them, actually:
I'm actually not all that familiar with Glorantha and RuneQuest; over the past few weeks I've read the core books and I think I've got a handle on the rules and setting, but I don't have the experience with them that I do with, for instance, D&D. (So why didn't I join the D&D 5E adventure writing workshop instead? Because honestly, I kind of want to do more with other games besides D&D, and although I don't have prior experience with RuneQuest it was something I was interested in.)
I haven't really used layout software before (well, not within the last few decades, anyway), so that'll be new for me, too.
Have you started learning that skill or tool prior to starting this project? (Explain yes or no.)
Yes to the first, no to the second (I did actually pay for a Udemy lesson on Adobe InDesign months ago, but haven't had a chance to complete it).
Have you completed a project of this size and scope before?
No, which is the main reason I joined this workshop. I've started loads of adventures and game supplements, but haven't quite gotten around to finishing any of them; I'm hoping I can change that this month.
How much time can you devote to this project every day, week, or month until it's finished?
Eh… that's the problem. I have a really, really unpredictable and irregular work schedule, so it's hard to know in advance what days I might have time to work on the project, or what times during those days. And that means I can't set aside in advance a specific time of day I plan to work on the project, because I don't know in advance whether or what time I'll be working. But for the rest of the month even on days I'm working I should be able to devote at least an hour before or after work (or possibly even during work; I'm actually typing this at work right now).
What potential obstacles may you encounter during this project?
The main obstacle is… see previous answer.
Oh… also, keeping my adventure under 3500 words will definitely be a challenge. I tend to kind of get carried away. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say right now that my adventure will almost certainly be longer than 3500 words. Maybe way longer. But I'm still going to try to get it done by the end of the month.
Based on your responses, map out a timeline for this project.
Well, since I didn't know about the countdown activities and didn't sign up for the workshop until the first, and then spent a few days trying to catch up with the countdown activities that I should have done in advance, I'm off to a late start… but I'm going to try to get caught up by tomorrow (November 11) and thereafter stick to the suggested schedule.
[And did that happen? Did I get caught up by November 11? Ha ha ha no of course not I'm way behind gah I'm an idiot.]

Over the last year or so I've been trying to replace online services in my life with offline alternatives for a two reasons.
Privacy. I don't have to worry what a bunch of strangers are doing with the files/information I give them. I try to give people as little data as possible; even if I trust the company providing the service in its current state, there is always the chance it will be sold to others I do NOT trust, and by then it's too late; my data is already out there and I don't have a say over what the new owners do with it
Availability: I don't want to depend on third-party service to always be up and running. The service could be having issues, or worse, the entire service could disappear from the internet (looking at all the YouTube to MP3 websites that Google keeps taking offline).I don't want to have to keep hunting down and vetting new services if my preferred one is down for some reason
The privacy aspect especially comes into play when I need to manipulate PDFs; rotating or removing pages, signing documents, converting from PDFs to Word or vice versa, etc.. Often the PDF is sensitive, and even if it isn't, someone could probably infer a bunch of information about you (or someone at your IP) over time based on what you upload.
Enter Stirling PDF, a self-hosted app that has functionality for just about every PDF manipulation you can imagine.
I'm serious. There are 46 different functions listed in the documentation, ranging from common (merging PDFs) to esoteric (redacting/blacking out specific words or phrases within PDFs). If you need to manipulate a PDF, Stirling PDF probably has you covered.

If this intrigues you, I encourage you to spin up an instance of Stirling PDF on your own system. I've linked their GitHub repo above, but if you happen to own a Synology or UGREEN NAS, Marius Bogdan Lixandru (AKA MariusHosting) has written a fantastic guide to getting started here (and also his website is just a nerdy delight all around).

3 Best Specification-Making Tools for Interior Designers in 2024
In today’s fast-paced interior design industry, the need for efficient specification-making software is more crucial than ever. These digital tools help designers streamline workflows, improve accuracy, and enhance collaboration. Here, we explore the features, user experience, and overall value of three top specification-making apps for interior designers: Intebee, Fringe, and Gather.
Intebee
Tumblr media
Intebee.com
User Experience: Intebee requires the installation of two separate applications, which complicates the initial setup process. New users may find the onboarding experience somewhat unclear and challenging.
Interface: The interface appears outdated, with a steep learning curve that could be off-putting for users accustomed to more modern software.
Database: Intebee lacks a built-in database, requiring users to create and manage their own, which can hinder efficiency.
Functionality: The software limits exports to PDF format and lacks integrated floor plans or a procurement feature, reducing its utility for comprehensive project management.
Pricing: Starting at $10 per user per month, Intebee is an affordable option for small to medium-sized enterprises.
Trial Period: Offers a 1-month free trial with full functionality.
Fringe
Tumblr media
User Experience: Fringe is user-friendly and intuitive, allowing quick mastery of the app. Although the onboarding process could improve, it provides helpful tutorial videos and live online demos.
Interface: Featuring a modern and visually appealing design, Fringe offers an enjoyable user experience.
Database: Fringe comes with a built-in database of hundreds of suppliers, expanding monthly, which eliminates the need for manual data entry.
Functionality: Fringe stands out with unique features like integrated floor plans and the ability to design custom products within the app.
Pricing: Starting at 16 euros per user per month, Fringe is cost-effective, especially with volume discounts that can reduce the price to 9.9 euros per user per month for teams of five.
Trial Period: Includes a 3-month free trial to explore all features.
Gather
Tumblr media
User Experience: Gather is known for its user-friendly design, making it easy for new users to get up to speed quickly through an effective onboarding process.
Interface: Gather features a modern, sleek interface with intuitive navigation.
Database and Tools: While Gather lacks a built-in database, it includes a clipper tool for web data extraction. However, this tool struggles with complex sites, often requiring manual data entry.
Functionality: It supports PDF exports and includes a basic procurement feature, but manual operation is required, which could be a drawback for larger projects.
Pricing: Gather’s plans start at $165 per month, with full-feature packages reaching up to $790, making it a more expensive option.
Trial Period: Offers a 14-day free trial with full functionality.
These three tools—Intebee, Fringe, and Gather—offer a range of features tailored to the diverse needs of interior designers, making them top choices for specification-making in 2024. When choosing the right tool, consider your budget, desired functionality, and the user experience that best fits your workflow.
