Btw I completely understand why when I asked what guilty gear game I should start with I received so many different answers to that question- like. There's no one answer fits all to this one I'm afraid!
#I asked that almost a year ago now! can you believe that!!#anyway- imo it definitely comes down to what you're interested in GG for#if you're an insane person (such as myself) and want to play GG for the story the best way to experience that is start from the start#if you're not interested in the story and more in it for gameplay just. pick up whatever one stands out to you as being the most fun#they're boring answers but I stand by them!#anyway my only advice is DO NOT pick up a pirated copy of Accent Core on the PSP as your very first fighting game ever#I was really close to doing that- I was like seconds away from it before a chorus of gg fans went#and slapped it right out of my hands#real of them I can definitely understand why they thought starting with GGXXAC would scare someone off#not me though! i'm a masochist!#yappin'

Not me spending $85 (600 DKK) on a physical copy, only to see it getting a wide digital release a few months later. Oh well, those are the risks of collecting old games sometimes, lmao. Am genuinely happy it is though!

I think I may as well save up for a Steam Deck at this point what with all the unplayed games over Steam rather than jumping on the Switch 2 hype. I still perfectly am content with my Switch and hopefully there are MODs available online in the event Nintendo does things. But tbh I wish they just bring the DS back...
#personal rant#i have plans to repurchase most of my fav COG games over there too even before the whole dashingdon stuff#the new console looks like a pain to hold tbh#the DS was just right and idk why they decided to go copy Sony lol#even the PSP was just the perfect size and weight#i may simply be ranting about old consoles after seeing images on my feed *sigh*

one of these days I've gotta write about Phoenix and the whole backstory I've crafted for him, since TLF never gave him any kind of lore because he was a non-canon character in a spinoff game whose sole purpose it seems was to sacrifice himself and die at the end anyway, so any backstory they might have given him would have been completely meaningless
#ellie rambles#still annoyed that the only way to (legally) access TLF now is to pay $160 a year for PS Plus Premium and the classics catalog#and btw if you cancel your subscription you lose access to all the classic games you buy/download under that subscription#at least from my understanding based on the FAQ page#kinda like how you can't just pay for a month of Apple Music download a bunch of music and then cancel your subscription#so if I want to see Phoenix without looking up cutscenes on YouTube I have two options:#it's either an expensive gaming subscription that I know I would barely use anyway. or buy a used PSP and a copy of the game.#why does the world insist on putting paywalls between me and my man!!!!

Out of the Wammy kids, Matt would 100% be Light's favorite.
In a domestic AU where L and Light settle in together and try their hand at "normality" and live on their own floor at Wammy's (clownverse by @ponury-grajek tbh), Light would probably lose his mind from the chaos.
L thought it might be good for Light and calm him tf down a bit, and he maybe wanted to get involved in the children's lives to see what parenting would be like.
But, it goes about as well as expected. The children figure it out within the week, and the successors confirmed it within three days.
Near and Mello make it their mission to figure out why L would bring Kira into their home base, while Matt knows immediately it's because their lips have been doing the tango.
Near and Mello would probably make Light's life hell, just make every interaction a nightmare. He gets progressively more and more wound up until one day he can't take it anymore and ducks into a random room and screams.
It's Matt's room.
Light immediately goes red, apologizes and is about to shuffle out in total embarrassment, but then Matt says fuck it and holds up a controller.
"Wanna play Mario Kart?"
Light, after playing with Ryuk after school for weeks, quietly just takes the controller and starts up a game.
Matt is chill. He is so unbelievably chill in this house of chaos it boggles Light’s mind. He has never met someone so passive in his life, and probably never will again.
Matt prattles on about what a pain Mello was being lately, how he's been insufferable to talk to and that he can't imagine how Light's dealing with the full force of it.
"Seems like a lot— just got off the Kira investigation too, right? While you were a student? And the suspect yourself? Sounds like a total nightmare to me, jeez. How'd ya do it?" Matt chuckles to himself a bit, blowing out some smoke. Wait, wasn't he like thirteen?
"I don't know myself..." He grumbled without thinking, immediately distracted by Bowser shoving him into a hole off rainbow road as he hissed obscenities at the online player.
"Ha! Not as pure as you make yourself out to be, huh?" Light was about to reply, but cut himself off with a shout when Matt shot him with a red shell right before the finish line.
Light starts joining Matt for Nintendo turned game nights when the irritating children start making him itch for his pen, or L has decided to be particularly obtuse that day, and even when he just feels like screaming.
For a barely teen, Matt was easy to chat with. Light didn't go into depth with some of his problems, but still Matt just snickers and agrees with him most of the time. Light knew he was probably getting probed for weaknesses, but he didn't care at this point. He needed someone normal to talk with.
They even delve into respective tech/hacking skills, argue over which government organization's files are harder to get into, what they're favorite code language is, etc.
Matt himself wasn't looking to run to Mello or Roger with their game night chats, it was nice to find someone to play with once in a while, no way was he gonna betray Light's trust for no good reason. Playing video games with him was hilarious, he got super serious and devious when he locked in, and his rage rants were prime comedic material. Not to mention that he's never got to geek out about hacking with anyone before. Who cares if he was Kira, he needed a reliable teammate for WoW.
Light’s favour for Matt starts showing itself outside the game nights. One of the younger kids stole his psp and broke it? Matt would find a newer version sitting on his bed in box. A limited release was coming up but his allowance was short? Light dipped into L's limitless accounts to get a copy for Matt's collection.
Ecstatic, Matt thanks him in the hall way with a big grin while the other kids look confused.
Rumor gets back to Mello, who is quite pissed off Matt has betrayed them to become Kira's favourite.
Matt just shrugs as Mello screeches, they'd figure out sooner or later that Kira was just a mildly pathetic, dry humoured, burnt out college student with a side of megalomaniac supervillain.
Until then, more special treatment from his step-Kira.
#i do fully believe light with vibe with matt the most out of the three#mello and near are too much like L for him to relax#death note#light yagami#l lawliet#lawlight#as always#matt death note#mello death note#near death note#near#mello#matt#yagami light#death note shitpost#l x light#death note fic#clownverse#mail jeevas#mihael keehl#nate river

I don't think accusing him specifically of hating a character is the right move because he can always just deny it like this, the term I like to use for Anna and others is "symbolic hatred", the recent EVO interview just reminded me of this.
They talk about how there was some people on the dev team (not Harada specifically though I remember him saying he simply preferred Nina) playing favorites like with Nina and Anna or Devil Jin and Hwoarang.
Nina had the bigger move list and was prioritized in the design stage in Tekken 2 specifically, so Tekken 3 was Anna's chance to make a name for herself. I think Anna was a great addition to this game even if she was overshadowed heavily.
Now it's just a cherry on the top for an already well designed and consistently fleshed out character archetype. But this kind of iconography is important to a character's success, it helps them stand out and become memorable. Another clear example of this in my opinion would be Yoshimitsu.
So while Harada might not outright "hate" his own characters, favoritism was allowed to impact legacy, balance and even iconography. Oddly enough Anna was considered mid tier while Nina was considered low tier yet still Nina remains the staple.
I think most characters got a fair chance being revitalized in Tekken 5 from TTT1 but let's talk about some of the missing characters. Ancient Ogre (who was just Ogre back then) and True Ogre (who is just called Ogre in TTT2) were boss characters and I feel that they made Tekken 3 special so it made sense to not put them back in the mainline roster. They also relied too heavily on just copying other moves that kind of dampens their potential, at least they had that Ogre Within mode as a send off.
Armor King II didn't exist at the time of TTT1 so it was just Armor King I and King II. If you've been active in this community for a while you've probably seen King II's famous T3 P2 outfit being praised by now.
While Armor King I was missing from this game, they gave King an homage mask of Armor King's mask. To me, this is an example of favoritism coming into play. Let's take a look at Armor King I's TTT1 outfits.
Even if you prefer these outfits to what King got, it's clear that more creativity and effort was put into what King has got. He may have been higher tier than King in TTT1 but it's clear who was prioritized and who was the afterthought.
Not wanting to leave Armor King I out he is also killed like King I and replaced by someone taking his name, I hate this happening in fighting games but fine let's rip off Mortal Kombat with this story. Remember how Armor King I was higher tier than King II in TTT1? Well in Tekken 5 DR he is just... abysmal. You'll notice I said Tekken 5 DR and not just Tekken 5, that's because the replacement DIDN'T return in Tekken 5 (PS2) and was only available for the PS3/PSP versions of that game.
Debuting as a bonus character with Roger, Alex was an alternate for Roger. This legacy being continued in TTT1. I guess there was less novelty with a boxing lizard than a boxing kangaroo but Roger doesn't come back either instead Roger Jr is in the pouch of his mother... we still don't know her name by the way. Compared to the bears, it's clear there's some favoritism going on but they were all bottom tier in TTT1 anyway so not by that much.
Prototype Jack and Gun Jack were cut but I'm pretty sure they live on through Jack and it's really his whole thing to be upgraded. You could technically classify Jack-8 as a prototype Jack if it makes you feel better but definitely makes sense to not have 3 Jacks in a roster. Prototype Jack was the weakest of the 3 but I doubt it mattered and GUN Jack was the strongest but remember that this isn't just about tier placements.
Tiger, similar to Dr Bosconovitch was seemingly a bonus character so I guess it makes sense to treat him as such especially with Eddy soon getting another alternate who has much more effort put into them as a serious character. Still kind of weird to leave him behind but at least he got a stage later on. Him and Christie should've been unique, TTT2 barely separates them and Tiger is still treated like a bonus character he doesn't even have his own ending.
Devil is a similar boss situation and basically lives on through Kazuya/DVJ but Angel is a tricky situation. She's a bonus character but she's also a boss character but not to all characters fight her. She was an alternate to Devil but she's clearly a different person from Kazuya so should she live on through Kazuya/DVJ? Given the limitations of that game it's likely her arrival would've been less hype for the expectations of a boss character, better to save her for something else while letting Jinpachi have his moment. She doesn't get a distinct rework until TTT2 and honestly it makes sense to not bring her back until Tekken 9.
Unknown is the boss character of Tekken Tag Tournament 1 and if Jun didn't come back then why would she? I'd like to see her in Tekken 9 also since she's hyped as like the boss of the series if that makes sense. Plus like Angel she wasn't unique except she was a clone character that could switch characters mid match and she was reworked to be the better Jun move list in TTT2 unlike Angel who is the worst Mishima in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 by far.
They wanted to save Jun for lore purposes but I personally think it was a mistake to not bring her back for Tekken 4. It didn't really help Asuka either because she was pretty much held back after Tekken 5 and Tekken 8 isn't really doing much for either of them even with Jun's DLC story bonus. So much for that hype. I don't hold it against Asuka too much because they do make an effort to push her to be different and thankfully TTT2 and T8 makes them distinct enough.
But what they did to Jun, Michelle and Kunimitsu was simply unfair and shows blatant bias. Let's take a look at their tier placements shall we? Jun and Kunimitsu? Bottom tier. Now while this may not show explicit bias please couple it with the fact that they didn't return for T4 or T5... or T6 or T7. It was one thing to be missing from Tekken 3 but the resulting unpopularity of these two would damage their legacies in a way they would never fully recover from. What do I mean by this? Well Lee and Kazuya bounced back from Tekken 3 with fun, distinct and skillful move sets with depth, they didn't need the extra help too given that they were important characters that didn't need to be held for some hype moment.
I mentioned iconography before so let's talk about that. She was really different in TTT1, only sharing similarities with her top tier son but then Jin got reworked in T4 which makes Jun's exclusion even more insulting. Oh by the way yeah Jun had to compete with her top tier Mishima/Kazama hybrid protagonist son for popularity. Wait what? You're telling me she was unpopular? Incredible...
Yoshimitsu is a good example of a consistently fleshed out staple like Nina but he also has a plethora of iconic moves, but how does his counterpart measure up? She measures up extremely poorly in this department, they have such a huge disparity even back in Tekken 1 and 2 it was like this. It takes almost every aspect of that Nina and Anna dev feud and cranks it up to an extreme and almost spiteful area. Less iconography, bottom tier, only a sub boss reference tag wise and you're telling me this character didn't perform well? Time to hurt her legacy more by not bringing her back for Tekken 5. By the way, she wasn't a clone of Yoshimitsu in this game and even if she was look at her weapon, it's not like expanding her move list would automatically have her copying Yoshimitsu's flea stance or something. She could've been brought back, but wasn't with the help of dev favoritism.
Now what about Michelle? Well Michelle was considered mid tier, not bad right? Higher than Lee yet she still failed, what's up with that? Well she may have been alright but Julia takes the cake, she not only has a much more fleshed out move list from a casual perspective but was higher tier than Michelle. It doesn't help that Julia was in the last game taking a lot of inspiration from her mother. Her style, her outfit theme and even her story. Julia had her Mad Axes, what did TTT1 Michelle have to compete with that? At least Baek had a different design from Hwoarang (even though he came back I'll admit there's some bias there too against Baek). Wang might've been weaker but he definitely stood out more and him coming back in Tekken 5 shows that the devs liked him more (I think Harada even said once that he liked Wang). If you look up the word "overshadowed" in the dictionary you'd find Michelle Chang... if she wasn't too busy being overshadowed. Why would a new/uninterested player pick this character unless you just didn't want to learn another character with Julia? For the amazing 2B synergy? Even Kunimitsu, arguably one of the worst characters in TTT1, has more appeal than Michelle bias aside.
All 3 of them were in some way victims of something known as "power creep", which basically means that an alternative was so much stronger that it incentivized you to choose that option and thus ignore the other. Essentially power wise they were redundant but Michelle especially was overall a redundancy of Julia and this was cemented in TTT2/T7 for her. Jun and Kunimitsu had much more of a unique identity in TTT1 but it still wasn't enough. I'll be so mad if she ends up being a redundancy for Jaycee. Maybe it's more about neglect than favoritism but at the same time the favoritism begets neglect and it's clearly impacted character legacies. I'm not saying that characters being weaker in older games meant the devs didn't like them automatically but to make such legacy shattering decisions based on their performances feels like the full picture of the character isn't being taken into consideration. Think about how much more iconography these characters could've had if the devs liked them more.

Hey I've been watching your FF7 Remake stuff and it reminded me that I got into FF7 in like. 2010 so I literally went out of my way to find a PS1 and a copy of the game among local retro game stores, and just played through it cause I didn't have access to like a PSP or whatever.
It's a fond memory, and it's nice to see how special FF7 is to you because I feel that way about the game too.
that’s AWESOME

For a while now, I've been researching glitches in Danganronpa 2. I just realized I haven't talked about any of it here despite the fact this research has been going on since July of last year!
This video is long, so feel free to skip around in it to see the specifics of what I'm speaking about. Here is the explanation:
Super Danganronpa 2 seems to have a fatal flaw regarding buffer overflow. You see, every time you load a save file, a game normally should clear its vRAM. SDR2 does not have this check, and thus with each game load, you add more data to the vRAM buffer. This data will then overflow, causing the visuals in the game to display incorrectly. The more you reload, the worse the overflow gets naturally.
This video was recorded straight off of my PSVita. As such, here is my bucket list of things to research:
Checking to see if ports having similar issues (as far as I can tell, they do not. This makes sense as a PS5, Xbox, PC would have larger vRAM allocation than a PSVita)
Checking to see if the PSP version shares this issue (I have not gotten around to this as I need to find a way to record straight off my PSP)
Checking to see the exact amount of vRAM allocated to SDR2 (I will enlist the help of a friend for this one)
Checking to see if this occurs in DR1 as well (probably does but I haven't checked yet)
I have run many more experiments on this and have dozens of videos on my PC of raw footage. I plan to make a full YouTube video explaining the technical details once I have everything.
Also, for those worried, buffer overflow does not damage the game. As soon as you hard reset the game, it goes back to normal. It does not ruin save data either.
If you own a copy of SDR2 on Vita, You can do this yourself! I have written down the amount of save file reloads it takes to achieve specific effects:
62: item whitening glitch when presenting a present
71: trials become unplayable as the truth bullets display disappears
73: mainmenu text starts to display incorrectly
82: pressing square to open the student handbook crashes the game
95: mainmenu becomes invisible; interacting with it crashes the game
Note: I don't know if any of this works on emulator. Probably not? I'd have to check.
Also, if you're wondering how I figured out loading the same save file at least 62 times causes issues, it was by pure coincidence. I was saddened the Danganronpa Wiki didn't list everyones dislikes/hates for items (and I forgot the official artbook existed) so I decided to sit down and present every single item in the game to each character and document their reaction on a spreadsheet (as you can see in the beginning of the video). I would reload my save file after each item. There are 107 presentable items in the game. You can see how I ran into this.

how many changes can you make to a game before it stops being the same game?
what if I do it gradually instead? slowly change the artstyle, the plot, the gameplay, just a tiny bit at a time. is it still the same game if it's broadly the same? if I can still kinda give the same blurb to describe it?
I'm mostly thinking about this because of Final Fantasy I (I'm always thinking of this game it seems), and how every successive port of the game changes things little by little. I find it hard to believe that "Final Fantasy" on the PSP and "Final Fantasy" on NES are in any meaningful way the same game.
like, say you took all the map data from Super Mario Bros and copied it over to Super Mario Maker. is it still Super Mario Bros? why or why not? what if I copied it over a different game, like Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World or Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. is it still the same game then? when did it stop being the same game?
what if I remade the game from scratch based on what I can see playing it? everything looks largely the same, but if you're experienced enough with the original you can clearly tell things are off. certain movement constants or enemy behaviors don't quite match. some secrets are missing because I didn't find them. to an average player it might seem identical but anyone that's played the game for long enough can tell its not the same. so is it the same game? what if I managed to convince Nintendo to sell it, is your answer the same? this one's not a hypothetical. I'm talking about a real game here
following back to Final Fantasy I, can any of the later versions of the game be said to be "the same game" if they don't share the artstyle? if the combat system has been fully redone? if the gameplay loop no longer resembles the original? the story is broadly the same, but characters are there now who didn't exists. characters have different motivations behind their actions as before. is it really the same game still?
and if not, when did it stop being the same game? when the graphics got changed? when the battle system got redone? that happened twice, do you feel the same about both of them? when the story stated drifting? what even makes the game "the game"? I'm unsure myself
Final Fantasy I is a weird game. Final Fantasy I is a weird series of games. No game is truly Final Fantasy I, unless they are. Final Fantasy I is like if the Ship of Theseus was a game.
you ever play Dawn of Souls? it's a really fun game. can't recommend it enough
#post.ess#ess rambles#yeah this one's going in the main tag#idk there's a bunch of times when I see two games being referred to as if they were the same and I just disagree! I highly disagree!

In the wake of how generative ai spams things, Metal Sonic's choices in Neo Metal Sonic form make a surprising amount of sense considering how it not only fails to match Robotnik's aesthetic designs but also any of the characters he's really met before the PSP racing games (with the possible exception of Shadow's quills and Espio's gloves/shoes).

Metal Sonic: "I need to change my design to make me look different from Sonic."
Also Metal Sonic: *copy/pastes nose to his cheeks and generally makes design longer and pointier*
