I completely understand it was for story reasons, but kid me was SO pissed that you weren't able to play as all ten aliens in Ben 10: Protector of Earth.
Like, they could've had you take down that giant robot at the beginning by using Grey Matter and messing it up from the inside, included a few more boss battles across the map so you could gradually unlock the other aliens, had an underwater boss that you needed to defeat with Ripjaws. So much potential.
Maybe once you complete the game and get the rest of the Omnitrix crystals back, it would've unlocked some of Ben's additional aliens like Wildvine, Upchuck, Ditto, Eye Guy, etc so you can replay the levels with them.
I'm just saying, do you have ANY idea how badly I wanted to kick ass as Diamondhead, High Voltage Software?!

I don't think the broad explanation of Hatsune Miku gets across what exactly Miku means to Her devoted fans and the producers/artists who work with Her.
Like my general quick explainer these days is something along the lines of "So She is software that let's music producers add a synthesized singing voice to their music. Think of Her like a digital instrument, you write the music and tune Miku like you would a guitar"
And even that often requires a bunch more nuanced explanation. And so how do I transition into "yeah She's basically seen as an angelic digital entity, a sonically-driven egregore whose filling the world with music, but she needs our help to do it. The world is hers, by the way. She's immortal, she lives in the computer, in your smartphone, in that flashdrive or that psp. She's more real than jesus- hey where are you going im NOT DONE!!"

Out of curiousity, how did you get into doing this sort of computer work? Especially more low level stuff. :]
How can other people get into it / what would you like to see people make in the future in this area?
- Aspiring Programmer
I was an extremely poor kid, in middle school I learned about piracy which led to me getting into FOSS software for media conversion so I could load a bunch of media onto my psp. A short time later I learned about cfw, custom firmware, for psps when I was trying to figure out how pirating games for the system worked, that led to my first hardware hacking, at the time you needed to make a "magic battery" in order to save money on hacking the system which luckily for me I was able to do with a busted battery. That was really my big start because it was so exciting to be a poor kid with access to tons of games and media all of a sudden. Since then I've been very interested in firmware work and embedded systems, though I definitely didnt know thats what it was at the time.
For getting into software/hardware hacking/programming in a similar way I'd seriously recommend getting a cheap SBC, something like a Raspberry Pi Zero or just a Raspberry Pi is a good place to start especially since there are tons of projects for those boards that you can hack on and tons of very useful programs like pi-hole which does DNS ad blocking.
As to what I'd like to see people do: more projects dealing with media on these kinds of systems, video djing, glitch art, etc, because usually you're limited to something like VLC for media.

If you like video games I genuinely think its a good thing to like, get a retro console of some kind (handheld or home) and set aside some of your gaming time to play something old. Like, you dont have to be into "retro gaming" to sit down and play Ratchet and Clank for the first time. Emulation of course is also an option, and one I support wholeheartedly. But if you have the means, or maybe you've got an old XBOX sitting in a box or a gameboy advance your cousin gave to you, track down a locally owned game store. (I regularly find PS2 games for way less than I'd find them for online in my local brick and mortar) Get yourself a game or two, and play something that isn't online only or being taken over by battlepasses. Enjoy different eras of gaming, appreciate older game designs, and not just the classics! Do some research! Buy a game based on what you read from the box! Hearken back to the days you were in Gamestop or ToysRus or wherever you used to buy your games and saw something cool and took a chance, most places have return policies if you don't end up liking it.
I've been playing my PS Vita more lately, mostly PS1 and PSP stuff, and its been so nice to feel something pocket sized in my hands again, to play something new with just a hint of nostalgic comfort. Video games are still relatively new, yes, but they already have such a rich historic library of past generations to delve into. Don't let what the triple A sphere wants right now be how you play things. Video games are not products to be made, consumed, and discarded. They're art. Complex interactive art, and they always have been. Get out there! Play some old games with friends! Do a couch co-op play through of Halo 2! Host a genuine mario party on your gamecube! Trade pokemon over a link cable! Experience some niche PS2 title for the first time! Emulate! Circulate older hardware and software! APPRECIATE ALL GAMES!

For like, the past decade and a half I have found that any time I got a new games console I would try to work up the same kind of excitement I had when getting new consoles as a kid like the gamecube, ds and psp, and consistently what happened ever time was that I'd buy it, try to work up enthusiasm for it and actually keep up with new releases and get involved in modern gaming communities, but then inevitably every time I'd barely play any of the games I get for it since they just didn't grab me, and then inevitably I'd just sell the console to buy more retro games. this happened with 3ds, new 3ds, ps4, wii u and switch.
It took me ENTIRELY too long to realise that pc gaming was what I needed to get back into playing more modern games. I just assumed I wouldn't like pc gaming without trying it fully because I was specifically trying to recapture, again, excitement I got from consoles, and also pc gamers being pc gamers (the unironic "master race" fuckers) turning me off with their usual selling points of just "4k 180fps and no visible polygon edges", which makes it come off like you need overkill $2000+ gaming rigs capable of that kind of thing to actually experience the advantages of pc gaming
That isn't the case at all! you can build a computer for cheaper than next-gen consoles that is able to run lots of modern games at 60fps and 1080p. If you can settle for 30fps you can go even cheaper. You don't even need to buy a windows license anymore since Linux is free and its compatibility with windows software has gotten so good. If building a PC yourself is intimidating you could do what I did; buy a cheap OEM (pre-made) second hand desktop computer for cheap, like sub-$100 cheap, and use that to experiment with learning how to upgrade CPUs, gpus and ram. Using an old win7 HP desktop computer I bought for under $50, I managed to get it running doom 2016 at 30fps just by adding a new graphics card and CPU. doing it this way let me learn more about PC components so that when it was time for me to take the plunge and build my own PC from scratch I knew what I was doing. start cheap, and then if you discover that you need more powerful parts to run stuff you actually want to play, then you can start upgrading. There's no need to buy the highest end graphics card if a low-mid tier graphics card is already running everything smoothly after all. Just recently I built my girlfriend her own PC and managed to keep the price to around $500 (new zealand currency to be clear, which is like $300 USD). It was enough to run saga emerald beyond at 60fps which I was really happy with, but it did end up at around 30fps in other games like god eater 3, so we got a new graphics card once we could afford it.
And even with a cheap computer you can still experience a lot of what makes PC gaming so much fun. Indie games generally aren't demanding on hardware and there's far more of them on PC than there are on consoles. Indie games are genuinely some of the best modern games out there, frequently outdoing the AAA developers in lasting replay value and fun. plus, even the ones on consoles are better on PC thanks to extra features and content like mods, level editors and so on. there's also mouse and keyboard often being a more natural fit for game genres such as strategy and simulation games (I feel the same way about first person shooters as well but your mileage may vary there. Oh yeah also definitely play doom mods, they're awesome). Even if you're not into mouse and keyboard controls (I do really recommend practicing with it though! the speed and precision a mouse gives you is amazing), you'll still have a ton more controller options available on PC since basically anything that can be connected through USB or Bluetooth can be used. You also get access to fan made ports and remakes of classic games, all with their own mods and user made content, plus a ton of amazingly high quality standalone fan games (dr robotnik's ring racers is a recent fave of mine). You also have MUCH better access to older games on PC. You can be assured that stuff from the PS3 era will work superbly on modern PCs, and even a lot of 90s games work well out of the box on linux without needing to jump through hoops, in contrast to not even being able to play PS3 games on PS4. There's SO many cool aspects of modern gaming you can only experience on PC and it's not just playing microtransaction laden AAA games with marginally better graphics than on consoles.
This was meant to be about my disinterest in the switch 2 (not to say I think it'll be awful, I haven't looked enough into it, but I've already got my modern gaming covered by my computer unless some especially good exclusives win me over) but I got sidetracked and I just ended up gushing about how much i love computers oops

Hi! I feel bad asking you this but would you consider your custom scripts for your screenshot edits? :)
I assume you meant sharing them? No problem! But keep in mind these actions will only work in Paint Shop Pro 8 (maybe other close versions of PSP but I really have no idea?). I'm fairly certain they wouldn't work in any other type of graphics editing program (Photoshop, Gimp etc).
I think PSP8 is basically abandonware at this point though and easily findable, I think I downloaded mine somewhere online years ago and today it tells me I'm on day 20,089 of my free 60 day trial!
There are two scripts I use - Screenshot Edits and Screenshot Edits Darker. They're the same but obviously, one results in a darker finished image. Both adjust curves for brightness/contrast, adjust saturation up a little (more about that below) and then apply the bloom effect I talked about and showed here.
I use the "darker" script for shots that only need a slight bit of brightening because they're already fairly bright and would become overexposed, or for dark shots that should stay relatively dark (like nighttime shots). I also tweak the saturation enhancement settings per image depending on its needs. Sometimes the "default" settings on the script are just right, but sometimes it will desaturate or oversaturate, so it sometimes needs a tweak. There's only a few variables to play with in that screen so you get a feel for it pretty easily.
These scripts don't include cropping or resizing, I do that manually.
Hope this helps! :) These scripts for me were in this folder path: D:\My PSP8 Files\Scripts-Trusted
But there is also a folder path on my computer called: C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Scripts-Trusted
So presumably either would work?? Not sure what the difference is! But just FYI!

Oi Hilda sorry for sending so many asks but do you have any PS Vita recommendations?
Anything from HD ports to original software for the thing
oh hell yeah!!! i love the vita, its one of my favorite consoles!! :D
in terms of exclusives theres not much but ive still latched onto a couple of really great games. Tearaway is my go to, super fun and creative 3d platformer from media molecule thats fun to 100%. Gravity Rush is another great one, while i havent finished it i played a good chunk of it and its one of the most quality titles on the system, by far. if you want something super funky and unique, Open Me! is a really cool AR game where you solve 3D puzzle boxes by looking around them through the vita camera, and operating switches and dials on the touch screen. its kinda jank but i really love a lot of its ideas and think its very overlooked. theres also Touch my Katamari and Silent Hill: Book of Memories if you want some kind of trashy but still pretty fun games (touch my katamari is like basically good but book of memories? that game is WACK . they made a silent hill roguelike... still cool though)
the vita has a ton of great indie ports, some of my favorites are Knytt Underground, Super Meat Boy, Spelunky, Axiom Verge, and most importantly, Severed. Severed is unique bc the vita is one of the only places it can be played, aside from mobile phones, wii u, 3ds, and switch (handheld only). its a game all about making precise slashes on the touch screen, and the combat is extremely fun and unique because of that. the art style is also gorgeous, and its also a first person dungeon crawler, similar to the older megaten games, if thats your thing.
some other cool ports are Wipeout 2048, Plants vs Zombies, La-Mulana EX and Day of the Tentacle Remastered. its also worth noting that you can play basically every psp and ps1 game on the vita but if i went into those i think we'd be here all afternoon so ill cut myself off there. happy vita-ing dg !!! (also never worry about sending too many asks i am always happy to respond to them !!)

> Hello World
I have something on my mind. The PSVita has genuinely changed the way I view gaming.
I’m new to gaming. My childhood was mostly sports and art. I was on the internet more than anything though. I didn’t start playing games until I was maybe 12 or 13. I started to play with games like Borderlands 2, Final Fantasy XV, Overwatch, and Fallout 4.
As I’ve become more and more engulfed in the gaming world the older I get I feel like games are not the same even from when I started. I don’t like any of the online games right now; I have ended up retreating to my PSVita for my comfort gaming. I have come to appreciate the old games that were on PlayStation 1-3; fuck even the Dreamcast has some pure gold on there.
The Vita can literally run the most incredible stuff on it. I can connect to my PS3, PS4, and my computer. With some very definitely legal software changes and very minimal additions that took my only 10 minutes to do I can now play most PSP games and some PS1 games as well. I understand it may be a little small for some people but you can connect a controller to it. It’s so easy to customize and I’ve started to look into physical modding because I’m so obsessed with this small little machine. The battery has never crapped out on me, it can connect to my wifi, and it connects with Bluetooth. I will say it’s hard to find replacement parts at least that are actually made by Sony and not some off brand on Amazon or Aliexpress. I’ve gotten to the point where I want to buy a bunch of broken ones and Frankenstein them together and make a working one. From what I’ve seen on physically changing boards or shells it really doesn’t look too hard. At least in my experience and opinion.
I never got too into gaming because 1) games are far too expensive nowadays 2) it was never very convenient for me. I liked the switch but the lack of game choices made me stop playing it after 3 years of use to be frank. (Also it’s impossible to crack and that makes me sad. Nintendo let your audience mod your systems 😤) and 3) I’m so tired of micro transactions and seasons. Don’t be lazy, just update your game. Actually be passionate for what you’re making and putting out into the world. I don’t have to worry about any of these things with my Vita. With once again some VERY legal software changes I can get everything I want for free, it amazing portability (the battery life is eh. It lasts 5/6 hours, but I have a phone to play on if it dies), and I don’t ever have to worry about that mirco transaction stuff. I don’t have to pay money to play with my friends.
It’s not just for games too! You can get a drawing app called colors and use it to draw since it’s touchscreen. There’s a calendar app which I use since I’m on it more than my phone. There’s a camera as well! The camera isn’t the best quality but it reminds me of an old phone so aesthetically I prefer it. The servers on here are also not shut down! You can add your friends on it and it even has a party option so you can talk to them on the PSVita. I have Noboru on mine so I can read comics and manga if I’m not in the gaming mood. You can also even connect your email. There’s a similar feature to the Nintendo 3DS Streetpass where you can see what people in your area are playing.
Thanks if you read this very not put together infodump on the PSVita. If you have any questions pLEASE ask. I wanna talk about the Vita more ✊🏻😔

We need a genuine fucking discussion of how low resolution displays are an incredibly important part of handheld gaming that is not aknowledged as much as it should be.
Yes im going to be pedantic for a second like everyone in a CRT display discourse
With all my time taking a look at games on the PSP, DS, 3DS, GBA, NeoGeo pocket... It sorta sinked in how important the display's resolution is when it comes to 2D assets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like taking this frame of the twewy opening as a good example of what I mean
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way the low res displays handle kariya is sharp. it takes advantage of every grey pixel to create a sort of gradient which ultimately adds to the picture
you can still see some of the imperfections like that one stray pixel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but it ultimately achieves better results.
Lines are way smoother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Similar cases can be seen on the PSP, 3DS, GBA, GBC and even the wonderswan (Rhyme Rider Kerorikan comes to mind)
The better image isnt limited to the DS mind you, as long as you can run the game on its original resolution, you can achieve similar, if not better, results on your current monitor
The quality of modern day displays is waaay better than the DSi's too... but
Tumblr media
its a bit small. just a bit.
This is the same kariya screencap scaled to the DS's original resolution 256x384 (each screen is 156x192) on a 1920x1080 canvas
Kariya is really sharp! but yknow... what sort of madman is going to even play the game like this.
Most 2D elements in DS and GBA games look great which is a darn shame most people dont get to experience that.
Games like Golden Sun and Yddra Union look fantastic on their respective displays.
Even 3D games can look better in certain instances
Let's use Majora's Mask 3D as an example. Despite running at 240p, it presents a beautiful picture on the 3DS! A bit of anti aliasing was put into that release.
When looking at it at the right resolution, you can trully see how amazing it looks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but I will admit that most of the time this is the exception to the rule and those pixels can be so fucking sharp you could cut bread with them... Persona Q comes to mind as an example...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I get why people say old handheld games look bad, most people who emulate these games scale them up to their monitor's resolution which leads to every 2D asset appearing incredibly compressed and blown out and the 3D can be overly sharp.
It has caused a similar problem to the CRT TV Pixel discourse where theres a solid chunk of people that never experienced how the games were originally intended to look like and end up criticising the visuals because of a problem thats not even a fault of the game.
I am not mad about scaling pixels mind you. Its normal to do so and im not demonising people who run games like this
Hell, I do it too when running stuff on my PC. Its good and in certain instances it can be quite nice to see low res games so sharply
Heavily stylised games still shine when running them like this! Mario & Luigi is one of my favorite examples of such!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when 2D assets are overly blown out and 3D models are too sharp... I quite enjoy how sharp it can look
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Im not saying that scaled pixels are bad, that is not the point of this post
This post is about me being mad at people calling DS/3DS games low res and bad looking because they are looking at a 240p image on their 1080p monitor.
You're making a critique of a fucking thing brought by running/viewing the software in a environment it was never meant to be viewed in.
I fucking hate that. get real.

Hello! First of all I just wanted to say thank you for all the great meta posts and gifsets, they're always so well put together! You're truly a pillar of the Gale section of the fandom.
I was wondering what kind of capture software you use for your gifs? I've been wanting to try my hand at gifmaking, and I know the general process behind making gifs from recorded footage, but I'm a bit overwhelmed with the choices of capture software. Do you have any recommendations?
that's very sweet of you to say!
i use fraps to capture my gameplay footage. 🖤 i've used it for years now and it just works best for me. bandicam does the trick, too, if you're in a pinch.
to make the gifs themselves, i use kmplayer to turn the parts i want to gif into stills and then do the editing/colouring/etc in psp cs4.
