While I was looking into Fulla dolls, I found out another Muslim fashion doll was released around the same time!

Meet Razanne! (And be prepared for a loooooong deep dive under the Keep Reading lol)

From what I've been able to piece together from various sources, she was created by Palestinian-American Ammar Saadeh and his wife Noor in 1996, being initially launched through the internet before more publicly advertised to Middle-Eastern and American audiences in 2004. Their goal was to show Muslim girls that "what matters is what's inside you, not how you look" (quoted from an interview with Greensoboro News and Record). They wanted to give them a role model with an emphasis on education and religion, while also having a career! To reflect the diversity of the global Muslim ummah, each of her dolls came in three variants: Pakistani-Indian (olive skin w/ dark hair), Black (dark skin w/ dark hair), and Caucasian (fair skin w/ fair hair).

While unfortunately she's no longer in production, the WayBack machine has a record of all her dolls released through the Noorart website! Each doll listing also includes additional information to educate on Islamic culture!

First there's Schoolgirl Razanne, whose listing reads:

"Razanne loves school and is all ready with her bright red book bag to join her friends in class. For your information…Traditional uniforms are worn by schoolgirls in Islamic schools. In addition to the usual subjects, students also study the Arabic language and the Qur'an - the Muslim Holy Book."

Next we have Teacher Razanne, whose listing reads:

I don’t have as much extensive proof as I do for my Erik headcanons post but I will explain my thoughts for why I think certain ethnicities.

Natsu Dragneel : Japanese + Greek? (Because of the clothing style in his past flashback with his biological family)

Erza Scarlet : British + ? - I say British because she reminds me of Lara Croft who in her older days had reddish hair, also English history is big on knights, which Erza is. The other half I can’t tell as I don’t actually know what to think of her father Rung as. He seems like a POC though. (Maybe Mexican?)

Lucy Heartfilia : British / American - Because Lucy’s heritage as a noble it reminds me more of English nobility, but then her characteristics remind me more of american for some reason (it doesn’t help that Lucy looks a lot like Ashley Graham from the original RE4 and she’s American so I am kind of biased there)

Gray Fullbuster : Canada or Serbia (I think that’s mainly because I am making the link of cold countries though). Also if with Serbian I can see Ultear and him coming from similar places)

Gajeel Redfox : Native American (His hair and features remind me of Native Americans and I don’t know he kind of reminds me and looks like of Ratohnhake:ton / Connor from AC3) Juvia Lockser : Spanish + Russian (Spanish as the name Juvia is Spanish origin and Russian since the ushanka she wears and her clothing style in general)

Jellal Fernandes : Mixed ethnic - Mixed Arab (mainly Levantine Arab) + Brazilian, but then in my HCs he’s also part Desi too since the name Jellal is most prominent in India (And I want Erik to have a desi bro in CS). And the Arab/South asian idea came from him wearing Kohl/Surma in S1 in the anime. 

Ultear Milkovich : Serbian with mixed Central Asian or Kazakh (Again cold countries but since Ultear looks Eurasian but with dark features these countries came to mind. Serbia because apparently the name Milkovich is Serbian origin)

Macbeth/Midnight :  English w/Scottish + Irish + Japanese - English/Scottish/Irish is a given since his name ‘Macbeth’ but since his aesthetic is alike to Visual Kei, I see Japanese influence. But I don’t know, I just can see Macbeth with a british accent, maybe that’s just me.

Sorano Aguria : French and Korean/Japanese (I don’t know why I have the French, it just fits me when discussing with my friend @acutemushroom. Korean/Japanese because despite having a Japanese name (her and Yukino) due to her features she gave me kind of Korean vibes for some reason)

Sawyer : English (I can’t explain other than the name. But I thought of Romanian too for some reason, so English + Romanian?)

Richard Buchanan : South African + Scottish? (My only thought for this was because Buchanan I knew it as a last name big in South Africa, and Scottish is probably because of the red hair and ruddy complexion that I know scottish people can have)

Meredy : Irish (I don’t know why, it was hard to think of anything for her)

Kinana : Desi (Since the name Kinana is an urdu name apparently - So Pakistani) 

Cana Alberona : Irish + Italian (Guildarts gave me tanned Irish vibes for some reason and Alberona is I believe an Italian name)

Minerva Orland : Chinese + Latina (She wears a Cheongsam and her hair reminds me of Chinese culture but then I see Latina too) BUT, maybe she has Egyptian too and Italian since Minerva (Italian/Latin) but the blue eyeliner/eyeshadow she always has is alike to Malachite powder that was used by ancient egyptians 

Laxus Dreyar : Ukrainian + Russian (He gives me eastern europe vibes and also his features) but also since he's Makarov’s grandson he’d have Russian in him 

Makarov Dreyar : Russian - (I think his full name is of Russian origin but I can't be sure.) These are the HCs I have off the top of my head, hope this answers your question!

so this must be a weird request, but i was thinking about myriah martell (daeron ii's wife) and her relationship with the targaryen court. i figured that, as naerys wasn't such a strong figure at court nor the most fashionable, during aegon iv's rule myriah would be the closest to a fashion icon/inspiration for daeron's faction, however, as a martell in a deeply anti-dorne with a racist father-by-law/king, her influence would probably be quite limited at the time of his reign, both in fashion and in politics. hopefully, if martin doesn't kill her in f&b2, how do you think her queenship would influence the fashion in court? if you have any ideas of how as princess of dragonstone she and her supporters would dress, i'd love to hear about them too! Okay side note so I’ve never been able to decide on one main inspiration for Dorne, and I really don’t want that to read as orientalist conglomeration of multiple middle eastern cultures. Okay all that being said: I feel like Pakistani and Indian fashions are the biggest inspos for this time period in particular. Unfortunately we don’t know much about Myriah’s personality, but she seemed to mesh well with Daeron, so I take that as her being a more moderate, calm personality. Dressing in clothes that were fitting for her station as a princess of Dorne with gold stitched silks etc. but still have some degree of modesty at the same time. Her and her ladies always wore a few layers over their gowns, and always had some sort of shawl or scarf with them. Despite their compliance to the standards of Kings Landing, Dornish fashions never caught on completely, though over the years the Dornish fashion began to change a bit, with fuller skirts and more fitted bodices, while the prominent women of the city began to wear layered gowns and have the edges of their clothing embroidered in gold

This time last week the topic du jour was the loss of the Titan, a tourism deep sea submersible that disappeared on its way to tour the rusting remains of the Titanic only to be found a few days later scattered across the ocean floor, imploded by the enormous water pressure that far down.

A short while before that, a refugee boat trying to reach Greece with Middle Eastern refugees capsized and sank, killing almost 700 people.

Almost all the world’s media attention seemed focused on the then missing submersible and the five people onboard:  Stockton Rush, CEO of the company that operated the submersible; Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood; British billionaire Hamish Harding; celebrated Titanic researcher and former commander in the French navy, Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

Tickets for the trip down to the Titanic cost a cool quarter million apiece. 

In return, the customers got to sit cross legged on a thin padded cushion inside a tube roughly the size of a sewer pipe.  They really couldn’t see anything as the designers mounted the only porthole in a hard to reach location; what the tourists could see would be piped in to them by a video feed, so they might as well have stayed home and popped a Titanic documentary Blu-ray into their player.

For what they actually experienced, they would have been better off driving their cars through a carwash a couple of dozen times while watching a James Cameron video on their laptops.

So what did they get for their cool quarter million?

Bragging rights.

The ability to say “I visited the Titanic”.

In short:  Conspicuous consumption.

The refugees aboard the disabled fishing boat that capsized paid an average of around $1,000 to cram aboard the tiny vessel and risk the high seas in hopes of reaching Europe where they might find safety for their families and employment to feed / house / clothe them.

Many of they were fleeing war-torn regions of the Middle East and were desperate to get their wives and children to safety.

They were allowed to drift without aid for a couple of days, with the Greek Coast Guard coming to their aid only after they suffered their own catastrophic vessel failure.

The story dominated the news cycle for several days as false sonar readings led international search and rescue teams to hope they might rescue the five people about the submersible before their oxygen ran out.

During that time the Internet being the Internet posted an enormous number of comments and opinions on the story.

Many pointed out the irony of paying a lot of money for what wasn’t really a premium experience, only to be put at risk by the slipshod safety standards of the owner.

This ranged from simple irony to downright glee at the thought of a boatload of billionaires being trapped on the bottom of the sea.

A lot of other people got upset at this, growing angry with the mockers.

Much of their reaction seems to be based on their ability to imagine themselves in such a situation, trapped in a large metal tube miles down, waiting for your oxygen to run out.

They probably showed more empathy to the billionaires that the billionaire class as a whole showed to them.

They could put themselves inside that situation and could easily feel the terror and hopelessness they imagine the billionaires to be suffering,

The only bright spot in the story is that the sub exploded in the blink of an eye, the poor* bastards never realizing what hit ‘em.

At that depth there are no slow leaks.  The pressure grows and grows until the sub implodes with enough force to resemble a bomb.

One moment they were alive and presumable having a grand adventure, the next their physical forms were thoroughly obliterated.

There will be no body recovery operations because there aren’t any bodies left to recover.

The poor** souls on the capsized fishing boat share a different story.

No bragging rights among them, no vast sums of capital to expend on frivolous pursuits.

It took everything they had for them and their families to climb aboard a near derelict old fishing boat and risk a cross water passage in the hopes they might be able to persuade a European nation to allow them to stay and work for them.

They were prepared to put in decades of hard, backbreaking in the hopes their children would enjoy better, safer lives.

The children and the mothers died the horrible drowning death that so many fascinated by he missing submersible thought the billionaires went through. 

It’s not a competition, and I take no delight in the needless death of anyone, but the billionaires never got the chance to suffer, while the children and mothers -- staying below deck while their husbands and older brothers stayed on deck in the hot, hot sun -- did spend several long, agonizing, terrifying moments trapped inside a rapidly flooding overturned vessel, tangled up in a mass of thrashing and writhing bodies and limbs, desperately trying to find their family, find an escape…

…knowing this was it, this was the way they were going to die.

Billionaires put those refugees on that boat.

Oh, not the billionaires on the imploded submersible, but those in their class.

Billionaires who make money playing off shortages to drive profits up and labor costs down, billionaires who trade the arms and sell the weapons that make the global endless wars possible, billionaires who stoke the flames of ethnic and religious bigotry to maintain power and influence.

And who knows, maybe some of the billionaires a board the imploded submersible invested in companies that have nice, safe, generic names but actually deal in death and misery.

The billionaires aboard the submersible never get their hands dirty doing that, but the money is clean by the time it reaches them.

So I get…kinda…why so many people online got upset at what they perceived as joy at the death of the billionaires.

They were able to visual their shared humanity with the billionaires, and the terror of what they incorrectly perceived as the fate befalling.

They couldn’t with the refugees, and to be fair, that might be entirely due to the sheer number of them.

“One death is a tragedy; a million, statistics,” as that world famous humanitarian Josef Stalin once observed.

But the refugees were just as human and are just as dead as the five aboard the submersible.  Their deaths weren’t mocked.

Quite the contrary:  They were ignored. 

The capper irony to this story is than many of the refugee survivors were saved by a superyacht belonging to a Mexican silver magnate that came to their aid when the Greek Coast Guard appeared reluctant to do so.  Conspicuous consumption applied to good effect this time.

 ABOUT BABY GIRLS

 This is not my story

but there is a similarity
