Back in August the italian Disney comics forum Papersera asked its users to draw a celebratory logo for its twentieth anniversary. These were my two submissions. They weren't picked, but it was still fun doing it (congrats to Max Monteduro and Lorenzo De Pretto again)!

«Good stories ALWAYS talk about the character. They must tell us something about them, otherwise they are not good stories, they're jokes. So, that's not a genre (psycological insight t/n) I'm passionate about: it's the only possible genre. Not even a cake in the face gag can be separated from an in-depth mechanism, which is always there: sometimes whispered, other times flaunted with brazenness as in 'The Ballad of John D. Rockerduck'.
Here our John (who may have watched 'Citizen Kane'), barricades himself in his family villa, hurt by the too many blows taken by Scrooge. What I tell is a story of depression and consequent rebirth, but above all it's a story of friendship: the one between John and Lusky, who admires him, respects him and protects him. With discretion, yes, but with infinite affection. The story is, in my opinion, a Lusky story. The way he behaved really touched me: he took me by surprise, you know?
In my stories, the psychological insight is often (though not always), preponderant: not because I'm a sensitive person, but because, as a professional, I am aware that a good psychological dynamic can create more suspense than, well, a bank robbery. Actions become interesting only if moved by the right emotional spectrum: this is why the reader is participant in Rockerduck's redemption, because they live his interior struggle. Without that, the story would not be effective. Nor it would have been without Giorgio's (Cavazzano t/n) drawings, but that's another topic.»

Hello, I've noticed you've been posting about PKNA/PKNE, Wizards of Mickey and other Topolino-related comics. I'd love to be part of that online coomunity, if it exists, can you help me? And do you know of some way to read the new comics in english?
Hey there! Most of PK has been translated and the scanlations are floating around on Tumblr as well as more specialized places like Bankin' the Duck. Not sure about Wizards of Mickey, but thankfully those comics have been released in my language pretty consistently. (Unlike PK, which is still running behind... I'm sort-of following what's going on with the new comics but I have deliberately not actually read the newer comics!)
There's a couple of different communities, but I guess other than the Papersera forum (which is not that much fun if you don't understand Italian), most of it happens here and on Discord. At Duckscord, we have a couple of separate channels for topics such as PK, WOM, DoubleDuck and so on, and we're generally a friendly community.

RP: Un’altra storia peculiare della tua carriera, che molti ricordano con affetto, è Paperino e il vecchio frac che, richiamando la canzone di Domenico Modugno “Vecchio frac”, racconta la vicenda di un indumento che sembra trasmettere la cattiva sorte a chiunque ne entri in possesso. Solo Paperino, che di sfortuna se ne intende, saprà andare oltre le dicerie e riuscirà a trarne dei vantaggi; una trama molto più profonda di quanto appaia nelle sue prime pagine e anche in questo caso ti chiediamo da dove sia nata l’idea iniziale.
C.S.: Mi sono sempre piaciute le storie in cui un determinato oggetto passa di mano in mano, cambiando la vita di chi lo possiede. Ci sono leggende su un certo diamante (non ne ricordo il nome) che ha portato sfortuna a tutti i suoi proprietari. Questo tipo di struttura è come un veicolo che permette di visitare e raccontare diversi personaggi. Non viene quasi mai praticata nelle fiction, e non capisco perché. E’ ben presente solo nel genere horror, con le bambole Annabelle e Chucky, oppure è una intera casa infestata l’oggetto che veicola le storie. A mio avviso, questo tipo di struttura si presta bene anche alla commedia e ad altri generi. Per esempio, una dinastia raccontata attraverso un gioiello che passa da una generazione all’altra.

Okay so basically what we can take from this is: we will get more of Magica doing cool shit with the ocean. Volcanic witches will return. The chapter title makes it sound like Magica’s last name is Oceanica lol.
A world of ice reminds me of that Casty story l’impero sottozero. But that was more science fiction and politics this is gonna be cool magic things there gonna be magic ice in a world of ice in a ice ice magic ice
If every chapter is gonna be 30 pages that means more than 120 pages again which will slap (ITS THE YEAR OF LONG ENNA STORIES EVERYONE YIPPEE)
So like theyre going hard on this whole Magica + water stuff. Which i really like. I like water. I love it so much, i quite literally drink it every day. Even, the country in which i live is under the sea level. And ill tell you, i am largely MADE of water. If that aint enough prove that im a water fan…
Tbh my dream disney comic series was Magica going on her own adventures in the magic realm on a journey or something and then have the format be like PK and now that Seven witches is getting a sequel, its looking like this whole Magica fucking around with no numero uno in sight might just become a regular series. Like this is pretty much becoming my dream comic at this point.
Okay so lets do a bit of speculating on the plot. Ill say that something that happened in seven witches somehow unleashed a curse on the magic realm that has now gone into an ice age. Or maybe they will cause the curse in the first chapter. Actually the chapter title makes that seem more likely. That bitch from last time comes back to start some beef and they fight and shit and then somehow oh oh really cold water gets everywhere. Then Magica journeys through the ice world to solve it and things. Come back in 5 weeks to see that i got everything wrong. I kinda hope that actually what i just made up sounds really lame
But why would she go up against the volcanic witches? She made peace with 6 of em last time theyre best buds now. Magica does some really bad stuff maybe? She goes into dark forbidden magic territory? But that seems unlikely and out of character for what Enna has been writing. The other witches get hypnotized or something? OR MAYBE THE TITLE IS A FAKEOUT. I GOT YOU ENNA. The story starts off with them battling but its a friendly competition and then the story goes somewhere else!
Anyways i reaaaaallly want to know what theyve been cooking and no idea how its gonna go but i know its gonna be amazing because long story + Bruno Enna + Magica = at the very very least gonna be a ton of fun.
Sorry for the ramblings but i could not not ramble about this i mean its Magica and (then the writer proceeded to type out ten paragraphs of confused rambling text where they used the words magica and enna around 3041 times)

Bruno Sarda, the Turinese who brought Umberto Eco in Donald Duck's world
The Disney author says: "I loved his books, this is my homage to him"
"It's a lot harder to end up on "Topolino" than on the Treccani. [Translator's note: the most important and famous Italian encyclopedia]" That's how Umberto Eco reacted, when he saw himself being mentioned in a Disneyan story for the first time. It was May 1988 and the weekly magazine had just published "Mickey Mouse and the name of the mimosa", an adventure inspired by Eco's first best-seller. The author of this parody is Bruno Sarda, from Turin. "He told me that to be on the encyclopedia it's enough to invent any utensil - he tells us today - but to get into the Disney world, you have to be known by everyone."
Sarda, where did you get the idea of bringing Eco on Topolino?
"From the passion I had as a child for Disney parodies, that always lead me to read, sooner or later, the original texts. When I found myself on the other side of the fence, I realized that, if I wanted to parody something, I should look to the best-sellers. Others had already took care of the classics."
Topolino stories have rules, that don't lend themselves to easily translating a book like "The name of the rose." How did you persuade the higher powers at Disney?
"Indeed, there were some obstacles to work around: the murders and the convent setting (death and religion are off limits on Topolino). I was about to desist when I had the epiphany that I should move everything to an English college in the nineteenth century. Mickey and Goofy get there by using a time machine. So I saved the slightly gothic and sinister setting of the monastery."
And the murder victims?
"Those were simply kidnapped, and Aristotle's book (around which all the assassinations in the book converge) became a chess manual, which contained instructions and secret moves to win."
Three years later, in March 1991, comes the parody of "Foucault’s Pendulum." Was that easier?
"I was more experienced and I had already written other parodies like "Three ducks and a baby" (to which I am very attached because I wrote it only a few months before my daughter was born, and she 's worn it out by reading and re-reading it) and the novel had boundaries that were less insurmountable. The plot was less rich, though, and so I decided to essentially just take the moral out of the book: when you pretend something, you often run the risk that others may take it terribly seriously, and everything might end in tragedy."
No adjustments needed?
"Obviously in my parody, "Ekol's Pendulum" is the title, the tragedy is replaced by a comedy, which this time sees Donald and Fethry as protagonists and Papersera journalists, who, to find a scoop, make up some esoteric hoax that alas is taken seriously by a secret sect. In addition, in that story, the artist Franco Valussi put a homage to Eco in the painting inside the castle, taking inspiration from the caricature that appeared in La Bustina di Minerva [Translator's note: a news column written by Eco himself] in L'Espresso [Another Italian newspaper]."
Have you ever met Eco?
"At the Salone del Libro. [Translator's note: the biggest and most important international trade fair in the Italian publishing industry.] I brought him Topolino. I knew he didn't consider comic books a B-list medium like other intellectuals, but I was still surprised by his reaction. I was very glad: that's when he whipped out the Treccani thing. He also wrote a dedication on my copy of his book: "To Bruno, in Topolino.""
