Sooo after four weeks on strike, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers has been ordered back to work by the government. They're apparently so essential to the economy and Canadian people that we can't do without them, but we also can't offer them better benefits or promise not to make working conditions more dangerous for people who deliver mail on foot in the Arctic either. Bargaining has been kicked down the road until May.
And aS A SmAlL BuSiNeSs oWnEr, I completely hate that shit. This is a rant.
When discussing the strike with an acquaintance, they said, "The workers just have to realize that Canada Post needs to be more efficient, more like UPS or FedEx."
I've spent the last month tracking down and trying out different shipping solutions, because I've relied on Canada Post to be accessible, affordable, and timely. No it's not perfect, but it's not like the welter of alternatives that all have different rules, delivery areas, and on-the-ground services, none of which are as good for me as Canada Post.
After some comedically failed attempts at arranging mail pickup, I decided it would be quicker to take extra painkillers and go drop off the parcels myself. Earlier this week I had to hand over some of my parcels in a convenience store full of bongs and Louis Vuitton ripoffs, to a clerk who had never even heard of the courier company that used her store as a drop point. She had to call her boss, who said he'd process them when he came in the next day. And I did leave them, because the only other drop point within my travel distance was a pharmacy/medical clinic that was closed in all defiance of the hours listed online. Now I'm following their tracking online, hoping that they actually get sent and I won't have to send new orders out of my own pocket.
So what they actually mean by "more efficient" isn't better service or value to the customer. They just mean "more profitable." Because something something we can't tax rich people, we just need to make the services ordinary Canadians rely on even shittier, for both them and the government employees that work there.

Summary of this Substack post from Bill McKibben:
In the forefront is the most crucial issue facing humanity, the climate crisis. Railroads have a keystone role in addressing it. They are the fastest route to cut climate pollution from one of its major sources, transportation. Rail is already the most efficient mode to haul freight on land. Moving freight from trucks to rail reduces energy use by three to five  times. Electrifying rail and running it on renewable energy is the quickest track to eliminate climate pollution in long-distance freight and passenger transportation. It allows higher speeds that make trains competitive with air travel in many corridors.
Reducing diesel pollution by shifting freight from trucks to rail, running rail on electricity, and electrifying trucks for the shorter hauls for which truck electrification is most feasible, saves the health and lives of people living along highways and tracks, and near warehouse districts and railyards. As well, this reduces particulate pollution from tire and brake wear, another significant health hazard. Moving from aviation to passenger rail slashes pollution close to airports. Since communities around all these tend to be lower-income, where many people of color live, railroads offer a key environmental justice solution.
Railroads are also key to unlocking rapid renewable energy growth, reducing power sector climate pollution. The greatest obstacle to swift expansion is a lack of long distance lines to transmit electricity from remote solar and wind resources to population centers where demand is concentrated.  Transmission can be most quickly added along railroad right-of-ways under single ownerships and with traditional industrial uses, as opposed to multiple parcels where lines are often blocked by local opposition.

‘If it’s dangerous for one population, it will be for the other’: the Brazilian farmers poisoned by a banned pesticide exported from Britain
When Brazil banned the notorious weedkiller paraquat, farmers switched to diquat, a close chemical cousin. But now diquat – banned in the UK, but still manufactured and exported from here – is causing problems of its own
Tumblr media
When one side of his body seized up after working the fields of his small-holding, Valdemar Postanovicz feared he was having a stroke. “All the right side of my body was paralysed. I couldn’t feel my foot and my hand. My mouth twisted to the right,” he says.
In fact, he was experiencing symptoms of acute pesticide poisoning. Postanovicz had accidentally absorbed Reglone, a powerful herbicide based on the chemical diquat, while clearing weeds from his land in an isolated village in southern Brazil, in 2021.
“It was only one time in my life, but I felt so sick that I never used it again,” he tells Unearthed and Public Eye. These days, he weeds his fields of beans and tobacco by hand.
Postanovicz is one of a growing number of farmers who have been poisoned with diquat in Paraná, Brazil’s agricultural heartland and its largest consumer of the herbicide. Since a ban on the notorious weedkiller paraquat took effect in Brazil in 2020, the country’s usage of diquat – a close chemical cousin – has soared. Between 2019 and 2022, annual diquat sales in Brazil rocketed from around 1,400 to 24,000 tonnes – an increase of more than 1,600%.
One popular brand of this weedkiller in Brazil is Reglone, a solution containing 20% diquat that is manufactured in Huddersfield, in the north of England, by the Swiss-headquartered agrochemical giant Syngenta. Diquat has been banned from use on both British and Swiss farms since 2020, after EU experts concluded it posed a ‘high risk’ to people living near fields where it was sprayed. However, British law allows Syngenta to keep making the weedkiller in the UK, for export to countries with weaker regulations.
Diquat usage in Paraná has risen even more sharply than in Brazil as a whole; now the state has begun to see a rise in reported diquat poisoning cases. Between 2018 and 2021, the state recorded just one to three cases annually. This jumped to six in 2022 and again to nine in 2023. Experts say these official numbers are likely the tip of the iceberg. Many incidents of pesticide poisoning go unreported, due to lack of access to healthcare in remote areas, or fear of reprisals from employers.
“Those numbers reflect a small parcel of reality… According to the World Health Organisation, for each poisoning registered, there will be 50 missed,” said Marcelo de Souza Furtado, a specialist at the Paraná state health department, who is responsible for tracking poisonings in the western region of the state. The Paraná authorities don’t know the real scale of the state’s pesticide poisoning problem, he adds, but “the problem is big”.

Reminder you are not the Asshole if you don’t want to spend all your time listening to angry, upset, hyper emotional people fall apart all day. You do not lack empathy because of their failure to respect the fact that you have things to do, places to go, other people to which you would rather devote your time, things you’d prefer to be doing.
What does display a lack of empathy is a person who assumes you will spend your time consumed with the very negativity they complain is hurting them. There are people that get off on trying to push their problems onto other people, that is not healthy & you’re not a bad person for not liking it.
You have your own stressors, feelings, hopes, dreams, desires & everyday you get up & you be strong, you use your reason, you use your discipline & you don’t spew misery everywhere you go. The other person is just as capable of doing so. They could go educate themselves, they could independently learn techniques for managing their emotions just like you did, they can control themselves. They’re not because they find the idea of causing chaos & upset in other people’s lives more emotionally satisfying for some reason & that is not your fault. You didn’t make them that way, it’s not your job to fix then. You have your own issues that could have sent you that way if you were a different person. You’re busy fixing you. Everybody is busy with their own life’s work on themselves.
A covert narcissist will be the first person to call people unenlightened, unfeeling, unempathetic, when they aren’t being given the option to swallow up another person’s life with their upset. It’s important to look at whether they’re being empathetic to you & your time & your desires to determine if they’re telling the truth or if this is hoovering. Their whole construct is “im special because I feel so deeply, that’s why I’m so emotional like this & if that bothers you then you’re just not sensitive like me”.
That person is sensitive to their own emotions only. Show them one of yours & see if they don’t immediately try to divert the conversation back to how THEY feel & their needs. A real empath will keep track of the conversation & take the time to equitably respect & entertain your feelings without making it about themselves or getting triggered. A fake empath with a PD won’t be able to do that & if you point that out they’re going to cry about “keeping score” & try to accuse you of being the problem. You’re not.
There is no amount of gentle working out of the covert narcissist’s emotions that will make them stop being a black hole of directionless upset. If you offer understanding they get upset & you don’t understand. If you express a solution they’re triggered by it & you’re still the bad guy. They don’t feel better if you talk to them, they are prodding you for something else to get upset about so they can cry “how could you say that to me”.
This isn’t your fault & you have to understand the routine as part & parcel of their disorder. They have something wrong with them & it has nothing to do with you. Even animals out in the wild that live in groups understand that considerate & empathetic rapport is a give & take. Don’t doubt yourself don’t let them convince you, it’s like a glitch with them. If you say “I think you’re being too much” they’ll tell you that doesn’t count you’re not a therapist, if a therapist tells them the same they’ll have an issue with that particular therapist, if a better therapist also tells them their behavior is bad they’ll have an issue with therapy as a field. If god himself told them they’re being nasty to deal with they’d have a problem with religion. If Hawking rose from the dead & told them the constant upset makes them a jerk they’d have a problem with physics.
The constant game of thinking other people’s perceptions shouldn’t count is what makes them difficult & unhealthy in the first place. Don’t get upset, it’s not personal they have problems & you didn’t create those problems, they’re just proving your point by doing that. They would have you believe everybody’s feelings are wrong but theirs, they’re the ones who are wrong. It’s never we all have feelings & we can all have subjective value to ourselves, it’s they think your feelings are wrong & theirs are right-they’re not & you don’t need a dozen experts to verify you don’t feel good around someone. All you need is the feeling you don’t like them & if that upsets the covert narcissist let’s be honest, they were going to find something to get upset about anyway. If somebody can’t find positive things in life with all its beauty, all the good things in it that’s abnormal & there’s something wrong with that person.
Do some people get depressed & experience temporary lack of enjoyment? They do. But those people largely, entirely actually don’t sit around & try to make other people feel at fault for that. They remember good things, they want things to be good again, they understand the negativity to be a problem.
If you encounter somebody who thinks everything is bad, always was bad & tries to convince you that’s normal that’s a different mental disorder & run. A person with empathy doesn’t seek to convince other people life is horrible & they should see everything as horrible. That’s a bad person who wants people to suffer & that’s not permissible. No just depressed person actively tried to spread their hurts to others. Somebody that does that is wrong a different way & do not get sucked in.

Viability and sense of purpose detecting the core existentiality of young people, not being able to reach these targets set, make them to live in denial. For young people, everything they are going to be revolve around their ability to succeed in their endeavours with specific time frame, that’s what makes it threatening to their whole being, they set the time to have a house, time to marry, time to have children, where these goals are not within their reach given the time they have set for themselves, they will began to doubt themselves and slowly losing interests in living, and their happiness will be mentally attacked. In this current time, the world is in great turmoil, economically it has not been an easy go for young people, the older adults are still struggling and they have not provided a smooth transition for young people.
The hike in prices of commodities have skyrocketed over the time, even the viability of building and to own a house seem far from feasible, this has proven to be indirect attacks to their goals which not only determine their happiness but detect how they live. Companies are fast folding and existing ones face hostile and unbearable atmosphere to conduct business, remaining ones are only employing those who have wealth of experience under their belt, no room to usher in young generation. Inflation and poor economic structures and policies are making it difficult for young people to live, their viability and sense of purpose is interred with their goals and aspirations in life detecting their happiness and how they live.
Young people who starting up or trying to put their ideas into practice would definitely struggle under this atmosphere, for entrepreneurs, it involves the process of building brand and building trust with customers, for someone who is relatively new in the block would not survive the breeze of inflation when it blow having outline the budgets for the business, and some kind of bad governance and poor economic structures will stand as a barrier to achieving that goals. Customers in this austerity measures will choose to patronize with the old seller whom they have built good relationship over the time than trusting the new kid in the block. It is a question of familiarity build in the course of transactions, and satisfaction from good and services rendered.
In the era of social media where people could easily display what they are selling to their followers, such followers have been economically turned to customers. For young people, who have massively taken the advantage of this modern development their viability and sense of purpose revolve around the feedback and reactions they are getting from these followers. It might have given a little insight into the problem or proffer little solution, yet they make videos how unbearable cost of living is, showing disapproval to some governmental decisions, voicing out their anger when things are not moving well, they want to be part and parcel of the policies, they want to be consulted, they feel that the future belongs to them through that they can make political decisions that will foster good atmosphere.
Viability and sense of purpose can differ on number of factors for young people, their confidence and self-value will be determined by the impacts they are already making in their society, social media users keep track of the growth of their followers, it will make them feel that they are making contribution to the growth of humanity whichever way they are making that positive contribution, whereas for some people after long efforts still the results are stagnant without any positive way forward. The essence of life is to have happiness surrounding everything you’re doing, your job and family, and wider relationships across people of different walks of life. It is not going to be an easy route, there are certainly going to be obstacles on the way, you have to appreciate it and it will provide a clear vision towards attainment of sense of purpose.

Got screwed by LaPoste again. Flatmate woke me up to pay €11: more than the cost of the item with postage: I'd already paid import taxes, it was tracked so they could have emailed me for the €3 custom fee, it had a CN22 that said both these things but it was folded inwards so their shoddy machines didn't scan it.
A few years ago this would have ruined half my day. But I've been doing whatever therapy technique it is to take your strong emotions and break it down into every single component and examine every facet until it's something you understand, can accept and form solutions
Here's a little peek at what comes out after lots of uncomfortable moments of digging down:
ANGER because this is ethically wrong and entirely avoidable:
If they'd bothered to open the CN22, i wouldn't have to pay. As is I was presented with losing the item and reorder (with wait time) or hand over the money. Their corner cutting on personnel led to this.
Customs fee was actually €3. The extra €8 is a handling fee for laposte. If your parcel has tracking, customs contact you by email and you pay online. I did it last week for the Japan parcel. I was not sent an email for this.
None of that €8 handling fee goes to the postie who has an extra five minutes to make up for. I wouldn't mind if it was a tip, we cash-tip regularly for difficult deliveries.
There's no receipt and most people pay in cash so an unscrupulous postie could ask for whatever whenever. Half of my spam is claims from various delivery companies claiming my parcels are held up and need money, they opened a terrible can of worms
Laposte is not great at what they do and have not operated as a public service for a long time now with massive inflation on the cost of sending stuff. A postcard stamp (in country!) will set you back $1.6
RESENTMENT because I was extremely strict about hobby money.
A €11 loss would have meant two yarn or partial reroots to make up for it. Possibly selling one of my personal collection. At least four hours of work.
Every single supply and unexpected expense like parcel loss or extra fees came from the hobby fund which would be in the red if it wasn't a current sales moment. (My first rotary tool was bought with hobby money even though it had non doll purposes for example.)
I knew at the time that it was unhealthy thinking but hadn't found an alternative or ways to mentally unblock.
IMPOTENCE:
recourse is nearly impossible the post office system is designed that way: no receipt and they can claim bad formatting of the CN22 masked the barcode. It's always something. They sent my australia parcel to austria, billed me, i opened a case and checked in every month and nothing.
poverty mindset: if you've ever felt the sting of removing an item from the conveyor belt to afford the total, you know that someone else's small change is something big and important and painful. Even once you have some money it doesn't go away: donating to others is easy, being cheated by a system is awful.
Solutions:
As much as possible, I don't use LaPoste and their extortionate prices for sending to France and the EU. My two posties get regular tips and cash gifts at Christmas but I don't use the post office unless I absolutely have to. Mondialrelay or Point to Point get my money whenever possible. That feels good and makes losses feel less bad.
I treat unexpected expenses like a lost parcel, disgruntled client or new fees as a tip to myself. I put in the work, did everything I could and something out of my control happened. The expense is marked down but cancelled out from my personal kitty. I have been inconvenienced: I'm not going to let it hurt or work it off.
Hobby supplies that are multipurpose are a third category. I was putting glues, chemicals, thread and needles under expenses when I use them for all sorts of repairs.
More importantly: the hobby money spreadsheet became a guideline not a business expenditure book.
Since about 2019 I've also been trying to integrate the idea of the joy of the hobby having its own cost and reward built in:
If i make no money back from a €30 gunky bundle of dolls, there was still €30 worth of enjoyment in fixing them up. The experience of practising even if it comes out all wrong is also valuable. And you often get a tutorial out of it 😁 (see my "mistakes I make so you don't have to" tag)
There was a time before handicap benefits where every cent counted but even then we all managed to make tough choices so we could save small amounts of 'cushion' money - We'd all learned to be so cautious that the cushions went mostly untouched until benefits hit and something unlocked despite still being under the poverty line: the cushion had gone from €30 (100 if we had a good series of months) to €300 emergency funds and no medical expenses were paid out of pocket (as opposed to upfront with a potential refund later) and that made all the difference.
But also a big change was the mindset:
Normal people's unwinding experiences often aren't free even if it's just eating your own snacks at a local bit of grass.
Really throwing out the idea that hobbies should be monetized (that part was hard to unlearn, not just because it was so prevalent but because of shame at not "having a job"- i know now that my full-time job is to keep this body alive and I get maybe 3 hours max to not be about surviving)
Even in poverty you deserve treats because those make priceless memories. Hobby time is valuable because it's what's makes us human not just productivity/survival machines.
-----------------------
Anyway I've also been trying to apply this to my rejection sensitive dysphoria, knowing I'm going to lose Lily soon, frustration with how slow core muscle rebuilding is taking, as well as the very real fear of alienating my sister by accident or just clashing needs (NGL I spiralled most of the day when we had the odd confrontation last week).
but I'd rather break down something less personal in public. ^^;
Here's hoping this little thing that would drive me batty from feeling powerless, which now doesn't sting as much helps someone
