1995 Dublin - Number 7 - Nathalie Santamaria - "Il Me Donne Rendez-vous"
youtube
France have been on something of a run with their internally selected entries throughout the 1990s so far. They actually haven't been outside the top 10 since 1987. France Télévision's Eurovision team have their finger on the pulse of how to be successful and how to select something distinctly different and yet appealing to the voters and juries of Europe.
Nathalie Santamaria does nothing to upset that streak as she finished fourth, equalling the result of her fellow Corsican Patrick Fiori two years previously. She's a recruit from the National Conservatory with no other pop or performing experience and she's there to sing a pop song from noted lyricist Didier Barbelivien whose songs have been sung my many artists including Celine Dion and Patricia Kaas. Most notably he wrote for Joël Prévost in Eurovision 1978 and got France to 3rd place, and also Les Jardins De Monaco which got to 4th for Monaco the same year!
Il me donne rendez-vous is a song about a woman being seduced by a rich charmer who likes to play the fool, although she also sounds like she has her own expectations about how he should treat her. It's all very cinq à sept. This all done to a poppy track by François Bernheim (who has also written for Patricia Kaas interestingly enough).
After Eurovision Nathalie collaborated with Patrick Fiori and released an album in 1997, but unfortunately she had no success after that in the music business.

1. How are their parents? Are they good? Are they terrible? Are they dead?
They are dead :( They were decent people, though! They were hardworking merchants in Greece - not the most attentive, and they put pressure on her to marry well which was a strain on their relationship, but they were doing their best for their daughter. Clarette was sad to be separated from them after she was embraced. It was one of the few things that gave her some pause in choosing to become a vampire. After she left, she watched them from a distance and saw their happiness being upset by her disappearance. They argued more and she saw that their love wasn't as idyllic as she thought. It was very painful for her.
8. Are they trusting or do they refuse to trust?
Clarette really does not trust anyone. This wasn't true in her early unlife, but she was betrayed over and over again, first by her sire and then by many other political movers along the way. By this point, she's just done.
12. Do they have any self-destructive habits?
She's definitely a maladaptive daydreamer. She'll lose hours just pacing around, wishing for a life she doesn't have and imagining romantic things about her next childer of choice (which are generally not true because she doesn't actually know them very well). Also pushing people away and avoidance in general.
16. What's one song that makes you think of them?
This became a song that I listen to a lot after I found it in one of your Vincent playlists teehee:
It's French, which is where she spent a long time, and then it's also about being disappointed by a parade of men, so it's spot-on.
