Charlie Smalls, photographed by Martha Swope, circa 1974, via NYPL I've been a fan of Charlie Smalls ever since first seeing John Cassavetes' FACES, which includes his great "Never Felt Like This Before." The amount of information about him out there before his work on THE WIZ is thin: backed Harry Belafonte and Hugh Maskela (check out his piano on "Felicade"); appeared on the Monkees tv show; recorded one single under the group name C. Smalls & Co. With a little further digging I've found that the group included vocalists Nancy Whalley King and John Richardson, plus session legends Jim Keltner on drums and Wilton Felder on bass. According to an article in the November 2, 1968, Michigan Chronicle, the Queens-born Smalls attended PS1, then Music & Art and Juilliard, and then played in the 379th Air Force band. ("I wasn't very good on the M-1," so they let me play glockenspiel full-time.") In the mid-60s, he played regularly at Steve Paul's club, The Scene, which was also a hotbed for early jazz-rock experiments.

PHOTOSHOOT: INSTYLE MAGAZINE
Back in 2010, Marina graced the pages of InStyle Magazine. The editorial, which showcased some of the best Fall/Winter 2010 collections, was lensed by Christophe Rihet.
Styling by Amanda Bellan and Frankie Read, hair by Paul Percival, makeup by Cassie Jones and nails by Julie Luong.
Tumblr media
We're starting off strong with Marina dressed in a Dior chunky ivory wool knit cardigan with baby-blue silk ribbons and white fur trimming (£1,650.00) which she teamed up with Dolce & Gabbana burgundy velvet wrap bustier dress with draping and jewel brooches (£1,300.00).
Tumblr media
Her jewelry here includes a Topshop metal chain necklace with a Pebble London 22ct gold, blue aventurine and silk necklace (£240.00 - similar pictured).
On her hands, she wore a Dorothy Perkins black leather ring (£12,50) and a Sarah Ho London 18ct gold, quartz and tsavorite ring (£2,150.00).
Tumblr media
Look n. 2 displays Marina wearing her favorite designer, Vivienne Westwood! She chose one of the final numbers from the Gold Label's F/W10 runway - a lilac silk taffeta dress with exploding black organza skirt.
As in accessories, she wore two studded leather cuffs by Felder Felder (£200.00 each), a feather and 18ct gold headdress by English jewellers Wright & Teague...
Tumblr media
...which she then swapped for a Sonia Rykiel beige ostrich feather pom-pom headband (£350.00).
Tumblr media
One element I've noticed about this shoot: there's just never enough when it comes to jewelry! Layering chunky necklaces is such an early 2010s thing and this shoot definitely showed how to do it back then.
Marina combined a Djurdja Watson black jet necklace with Swarovski crystals (£476.00) with a Topshop metal multi-strand watch necklace in silver (£50.00)
Tumblr media
M further accessorized her look with a Chanel metal open-work, enamel, resin and gripoix cuff (£1,724.00)...
Tumblr media
...and Pebble London mother-of-pearl oval bezel ring (£165.00 - similar pictured) and gold-plated & pink aventurine ring (£145.00).
Tumblr media
The HOT Steampunk-inspired metallic gold and black patent leather sandals (£635.00) are signed by Rupert Sanderson.
Tumblr media
For the third look of this editorial, the singer wore a white tulle dress with fraying and ruffles from Chanel's collection, which was inspired by Winter wonderland.
Tumblr media
Marina's jewelry here included a Tom Binns Design Punk Chic metal necklace (£895.00), a Djurdja Watson gold-plated silver and brass necklace with Swarovski crystals (£389.00), and a Hoss Intropia silk and crystal cuff (£79.50).
Tumblr media
Next, she accentuated the waist of her dress by rocking a Hollywood Trading Company studded black leather belt (£205.00).
Tumblr media
The look was completed with these black eel skin peep-toe platform pumps (£585.00) from Rupert Sanderson.
Tumblr media
Here, Marina wore the Lolita bodysuit (£439.00) from Bebaroque's "Matador" collection with embroidery inspired by Spanish traditional matador costumes and historical embroidery.
She layered a L'Agence cotton skirt (£170.00) with a Topshop tulle and diamanté maxi skirt (£70.00).
Tumblr media
Her jewelry starts off with this beautiful Chanel Pre-Fall 2010 "Paris-Shanghai" collection gold metal, enamel and silk tassel necklace (£2,285.00).
She also wore Tom Binns Design crystal earrings (£120.00), the Felder Felder studded leather cuffs (£200.00 each), Pebble London gold-plated, onyx and coral ring (£165.00) and Sarah Ho London 18ct white-gold, topaz and diamond ring (£4,760.00).
Lastly, her black leather biker boots (£160.00) are Hudson London.
Tumblr media
For the penultimate look, Marina sports this intricate folded black lambskin leather sleeveless coat (£2,795.00) by John Rocha!
Tumblr media
Last but definitely not least, Marina poses in this Emilio Pucci Fall/Winter 2010 mustard-yellow ostrich feather jacket (£4,865.00), which I promise, would go missing if it was near me.

It Took a “Huge Science Project” for What We Do in the Shadows to Bring Back Colin Robinson
BY WHITNEY FRIEDLANDER
JUNE 5, 2023
Tumblr media
In this epic battle of nature versus nurture, nature has won.
The third season finale of FX’s vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows saw the death of energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) as well as his rebirth into a slimy, screaming, and time-consuming infant. The most recent fourth season saw him grow quickly from there, going from an energetic toddler to a tap-dancing tween to a sullen teen within a season.
All of this happened while his de facto parents, the more canonical blood-sucking vampire Laszlo (Matt Berry) and the vampires’ human bodyguard, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), tried to keep this version of their roommate from becoming like his annoying and frustrating predecessor: a supernatural being who gains energy by draining you of yours.
But that season finale, titled—what else for an episode about vampire parenting?—“Sunrise, Sunset,” saw Colin Robinson complete his metamorphosis into the grating-voiced and flatulent creature whom his housemates already knew. (The character is always referred to by both his first and last names; co-showrunner Paul Simms, who wrote this episode, has said that the fifth season, which premieres July 13, will get into whether these are even actually his names). To make that transformation complete, the team needed a Styrofoam wall, some “turn off that racket” music, and as little dialogue as possible.
Room Rager
Shadows has already established that these aren’t just vampires; they’re vampire hoarders. The characters’ dilapidated Staten Island Tudor is overcrowded with animals dead and alive, musty furniture, candelabras, and dusty books.
It’s hard to put a value on specific things when time has no meaning. And Colin Robinson’s quest will only reinforce this notion.
It begins as he’s banging holes in his bedroom wall whilst blasting death metal, a music choice that serves the dual purpose of covering up the first action and really irritating his roommates, (or, as episode director Kyle Newacheck puts it, is an example of how the character was “starting to learn how to feed in that state”).
The look of bewilderment when one of his holes uncovers a film canister suggests Colin Robinson is operating out of instinct rather than with a known purpose. As the show’s score quickens, he rushes through the house's tight hallways to find a projector and lug it downstairs.
The found footage has more clues, pointing out where else Colin Robinson should hit and in what order. It’s then that he discovers energy vampire nirvana: a long hallway lit like a fluorescent-hued forgotten side room of a public library. There are meticulously hung beige and brown sweaters and slacks (some Proksch had actually worn on the show), and detailed diary entries that, among other things, suggest one of the character’s boring rants was the impetus for the events in the movie Se7en.
As he makes himself at home in an uncomfortable chair for innumerable hours of reading, teen Colin Robinson’s hair falls out and his posture changes. Behold: The energy vampire’s metaphorical butterfly wings begin to flap.
“The Color Within the Darkness”
Newacheck says he and the production team had about two weeks to build “the huge science project,” which was a wall of Styrofoam blocks that could smash open, plus the secret room, which had to be constructed so that it connected to the bedroom set. Audiences had already seen Colin Robinson’s room, which is tiny and sparse, with only two pieces of art that hang on separate walls. Newacheck decided that those paintings could be what he calls “visual coding” for the character to learn where to line up the projector. Music supervisor Nora Felder chose “Forbidden Lies” by A Creatures Cage and “Killing Engine” by Andy James, Jan Cyrka, and  Christopher Clancy to play during the hammering, both of which exude a “turn off that racket” vibe.
Newacheck was inspired by the last scenes of Darren Aronofsky’s film Requiem for a Dream, which uses a soaring score amidst stark lighting and shadows to create what he calls a “big, revelatory feeling.” He says he worked with director of photography D.J. Stipsen, who was also the cinematographer on the 2014 film that inspired this series, to find “the color within the darkness” of a purposefully bleak interior.
The mockumentary format helped too, Newachek says. “Sometimes, when you’re trying to figure out what’s important in a scene, it’s kind of nice to have less choices in terms of shot coverage or shot selection,” he says. “It makes you realize what’s very important about the scene and focus on that.”
Silence Is Golden
Shadows tends to be a very loud and chatty show (Who knew hundreds-year-old vampires could be so needy? Guillermo did). Juxtaposed with this scene is a storyline involving one of Colin Robinson’s other roommates, the vampire Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and a lot of flailing and hissing. But Proksch embraced the lack of dialogue in this transformation scene.
“There was a moment where we talked about throwing in some ad libs,” he says. “And we just came to the conclusion that it should just exist how it was written. It should be a bit of a heightened moment.”
He adds that it’s even debatable how cognizant Colin Robinson was that he was being filmed, both because “he was so in the zone that he was not paying attention to anything other than his quest” and because he’s now, technically, the youngest vampire in the house. Much like actual children, “since he was reborn, he has been on camera,” Proksch says. “I think he also considers them to be commonplace and not as much of a novelty as the rest of the characters do.”
Learning and Relearning
Colin Robinson’s final moments of transformation might solidify that Laszlo and Guillermo’s efforts were always going to be in vain. Proksch speculates that, even if his character hadn’t wanted to read those journals, “he would have then been compelled” to do so because “it's in his DNA to relearn the process of becoming an energy vampire.”
They also help him hone in on what kind of energy vampire he is destined to be; leaving behind the days of teen angst and moving full-on into trapping his prey with mind-numbing conversations.
“I think it’s something like when you’re in school,” Proksch explains. “Up until college, you're in school and you learn a bunch of different things…. When you get to college, you specialize.”
Proksch doesn’t know how many times Colin Robinson has been reborn, although the show has established that this happens to energy vampires every hundred years, and some images from the opening credits suggest he might have been alive in the 1700s. But he does think it’s interesting that he never looks any older than Proksch himself, who is in his 40s.
Are humans the most boring when we’re middle-aged? “I think middle age is particularly boring,” he acknowledges.

Well, I finished Knights of the Zodiac, and there's no getting around it. This movie SUCKS. Apparently, Macenryu wasn't very happy with the end product either, but at least he had Zoro in the same year which did serve as Western audience's big introduction to the guy. Honestly, that's the only reason I can see this film being so popular on Netflix right now, that people wanted more stuff with the guy that played Zoro, and turned this on. Unfortunately, when it comes to films that flop at the box office that do well on Netflix, they can't all be Bullet Train.
So what was wrong with the film? It boils down to the plot being a complete mess with a main villain who only really makes his presence known in the last 20 minutes. And that's the result of trying to squeeze Saint Seiya elements into an 80s direct-to-video action movie that in another lifetime would have been reviewed by an internet critic making jokes about the cliche lead. While your average LA writer will often say that it's a necessity to change elements from the source material for the screen, the fact remains that the original Saint Seiya really shouldn't be THAT hard to adapt. An organization monitoring the future goddess Athena and who knows that people want to kill her makes a public spectacle of her return to the world and recruits potential allies with a huge MMA tournament with a massive cash prize as well as the opportunity to secure a powerful artifact, the Gold Cloth/Armor. You hire Paul Felder and Michael Bisping to call some of the fights and really show the Kido Foundation making it this huge spectacle. The writing that tends to occur in movies with tournaments occurs as the various leads all meet each other, leading to the third act where the nefarious forces of the organization Sancutary and their chosen enforcer make their move.
Instead, we got a struggle between Sean Bean and his ex-wife over their daughter, mixed with an underground fight ring, and a main villain in Phoenix Ikki/Nero that has no real motivation outside of saying humanity doesn't need the gods, and who was otherwise in the background working for Sean Bean's ex-wife. Meanwhile, random elements from the manga are squeezed into a much smaller timeframe (Seiya's training with Marin, Cassios becoming another presumed main villain) but in a way that is far less satisfying than the original work. It's muddled, confusing, and above all, boring in large stretches since it feels the need to try and make the story fit the cliched skeleton rather than trusting the original work. The fight scenes in a vacuum can be OK, even entertaining, but they still seem to lack any sort of major set pieces or impact to really make the story work.
It's funny, that with One Piece being a huge success by being as slavishly subservient to the original manga as possible, Hollywood should get the hint that being closer to the original is better. But I kind of doubt they get the message. In this case, I think they avoided having the other Saints/Knights appear to avoid crowding the movie (and avoid Power Rangers comparisons, always an issue with Western writers), which wouldn't be necessary if it wasn't for the ex-wife who's an original character.
Skip this one unless you really, REALLY need to see Macenryu in something.

Lekker Slaap!
Angie, Micha und der Hasenbär

Hamish Brewer, the unconventional principal of Fred Lynn Middle School, went viral and won praise for his work turning the school around. But can he rally the school to the next huge milestone - regaining accreditation?
Since moving from New Zealand to the United States, tattooed, skateboarding principal Hamish Brewer has helped inspire teachers and students at lower-income schools to smash people's expectations. After his success at Occoquan Elementary, he helped turn Fred Lynn Middle School in Woodbridge, VA around--and a documentary on it was viewed tens of millions of times. Now, this relentless principal is trying to lead students and teachers to regain accreditation for the school after years of being unaccredited. He's helped by amazing students, teachers, and UFC Lightweight Fighter Paul Felder, who makes a special appearance to fire up the kids and share life lessons he has learned in his journey. But will they be able to raise test scores enough?
Special thanks to Jonathan Alsheimer and all the teachers, students and parents of Fred Lynn Middle School.

Today LIVE! Rock ’N Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd and I go back to the days… when we were both in a daze. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleecker Street, Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage lead guitarist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, playing those iconic riffs in the great MTV Music Video Days... when there were ashtrays on restaurant tables, and MTV played music videos. Ricky has recorded, toured, and/or performed with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Billy Squier, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Brian Wilson, Steve Miller, Graham Nash, Don Felder, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zant, Mick Taylor, Dion, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Bramlett, Billie Joe Armstrong, Bill Medley, Paul Shaffer, Smokey Robinson and many others. Eight years ago Ricky was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. An honor which befalls the very best, and the very few.
36 years ago, Ricky got sober. For the past 15 years, he’s been using music to help others follow in kind has been his life’s passion, and now, his work. Clean Getaway is the title of his solo debut album. Sobering Times followed. His 3 singles, Glamdemic, Alien, and Louanne which dropped in 2023 from Wicked Cool Records, and his latest, Rhapsody in Blues - An Instrumental Tribute to Jeff Beck are in heavy rotation in my kitchen. As much as I adore The Blackhearts, I love Ricky's solo music.
In 2017, Ricky received the Drug-Free Heroes Award, presented by the Foundation For a Drug-Free World. He has received other awards since, including the Faces and Voices 2019 Voice of Recovery Award, and the 2019 Italian American of Distinction Award, presented by Governor Cuomo, for his work in recovery. Ricky is proud to help others find a message and purpose in getting clean and sober. As a sober woman in recovery, his plight and his passion inspire me. I'm proud of Ricky.
An old Borscht Belt Jew at heart, between the music, the bling, and the egg creams, he’s got mine.
I adore my old friend - so looking forward to this.

Matt Brown explains why it’s so hard for Paul Felder — or any other fighter — to truly stay retired
MMA Fighting – All PostsRead More Matt Brown has been there before. Back in 2017, the Ohio native declared his plans to retire from MMA following a fight scheduled against Diego Sanchez. Brown scored a vicious first-round knockout in what was supposed to be the final bout of his career. Just over two years later, Brown returned to compete again. King of Violence: Mike Perry
Tonight on BKFC, Mike Perry defeated Eddie Alvarez by corner stoppage after the 2nd round to earn himself the "King of Violence" Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship belt.
Tumblr media
Initially, I knew Mike Perry from his tenure in the UFC. A very interesting character whom made me chuckle on more than one occasion.
"Platinum" Mike Perry started off his career by going 7-0 in his MMA career, and losing his only boxing match. Upon joining the UFC, he amassed 2 victories before suffering a loss to Alex Jouban. He would then go 2-2 in his next 4 fights before signing to fight Paul Felder at UFC 226.
Perry would go on to win the fight by split decision and would cement himself as a true entertainer and someone willing to leave pieces of himself in the ring.
The latter half of his UFC career consisted of 2 wins and 5 losses, with his contract expiring soon after.
Then, Mike found his home at Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, shortened to BKFC.
Mike made quick work to dominate the BKFC, cementing himself as the promotion's top star after fighting Julian Lane, Michael Page, and Luke Rockhold throughout 2022 and 2023.
This leads us to BKFC 56, which Mike Perry would headline against Eddie Alvarez, former UFC Lightweight Champion.
Tumblr media
Mike and Eddie tore each other apart, and BKFC proves to be one of the most violent and brutal sports on the planet. After a dominant first round, Eddie began to feel Mike's pressure in the second, and would end up not being able to make it to the third round.
The fight was an absolute vehicle wreck and anyone that's as sadistic as me and enjoys violence should watch this fight back. Both men delivered.
Forever the King of Violence, "Platinum" Mike Perry.
