Scaling up a bottom-spray fluid bed coater from lab to production scale isn’t just about making the equipment bigger — it’s about making smart adjustments to critical design parameters. Two of the most important factors? Column diameter and partition gap.
Why These Two Factors Matter
Partition Gap: This is the space between the distributor plate and the partition's bottom. It directly affects airflow, particle circulation, and coating uniformity.
Column Diameter: As diameter increases, maintaining uniform fluidization and spray distribution becomes more challenging.
Partition Gap: The Sweet Spot
To maintain good coating performance, the partition gap must allow particles to circulate freely without causing turbulence or dead zones.
General Guideline: Keep the gap 5–15% of the bed diameter:
<5%: Poor circulation, restricted flow.
>15%: Too much turbulence, uneven coating.
Adjust Based On:
Particle size (larger particles may need a wider gap)
Airflow rate (should match the gap to maintain good fluidization)
