Language of Flowers: Cardinal Flower
There is a flower for every day of the year in the language of flowers. The flower for today, December 20, is Cardinal Flower, which signifies distinction. Image above from Wikipedia. Named for the vivid red color of a Roman Catholic cardinal’s robe, Lobelia cardinalis produces intense red blossoms. Cardinal Flower is an American wildflower native to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri,…

Wenemouett Sagamore. His Mark.
Penobscot. Sachem. Wenemouett’s homelands across the central parts of so-called “Maine.”
This mark, in print, appears on “The Conference with the Eastern Indians, at the Ratification of the Peace, held at Falmouth in Casco-Bay, in July and August, 1726.” Printed in Boston in 1726. This peace agreement between the Penobscot and English colonizers was signed amid tensions between Wabanaki nations and the French and English in Wabanaki territories.
This is the first time we are sharing a mark as it appears in a published source - meaning a piece of type was created from the mark and printed through a printing press to be reproduced many times for the publication. This differs from our usual share of a hand-written, pictograph mark on an original, or handwritten copy of an original manuscript document. The handwritten mark alongside the printed one would make an interesting comparison.
From “The Conference with the Eastern Indians, at the Ratification of the Peace, held at Falmouth in Casco-Bay, in July and August, 1726,” Boston, 1726. The copy shown is held at the John Carter Brown Library.

A collection of short stories, told non-chronologically, about an Indigenous (Penobscot/Panawahpskek Nation) boy/man who lives on a rez on an island in Maine. While there are moments of humor, the book left with me a sense of melancholy.
NotLR doesn't feature big wins or a lot of hope for a bright future, unless you could basic survival as these things. Maybe we should. The final story is set well in the future, so I suppose we know David survives long term.
What hit me the hardest is the lost potential for all the characters. The person who is doing the best is a dealer. Everyone else is looking for a twenty to buy cigarettes, or beer, or pills.
The beer hit as quick as I’d drunk it. The fire was warm. Fry bread was on my mind—they’d be selling it at Community Days. Maybe I had enough change in my room to get some. Maybe Paige had some extra change somewhere, under her bed or in a drawer. Frick might have some too, in his truck. Although last time I checked he had nothing but pennies and a two-dollar bill that was too cool to spend. Mom had no money, and I knew better than to look. What money she ever came into she blew. Money—it was everywhere but nowhere.
But the writing flows, moves, and the characters give of the little they have. A meal or a pill or a bed or a shed. A full cigarette, or a butt. I think people give out of love and friendship, but I think they also give to feel rich. If you can share, that means you had something to begin with. If someone gives or shares with you, that means you're not alone.
I'd love to read more by this author -- more short stories or a novel.

Night of the Living Rez, by Morgan Talty

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Following a recurring collection of friends and family on a Penobscot reservation in Maine, these dozen stories initially appear to be a chaotic, non-chronological pile. Taken as a whole, however, they tell the story of a boy, a family, and a community, one that struggles but manages to survive, despite everything.
This collection is the darkest book I've read in quite some time. Themes of addiction and depression are present in most of the stories, with occasional dips into even darker territory. In addition to suggesting content warnings in general, I want to mention that cigarettes in particular are prominent. That said, (what I believe to be) the chronologically penultimate story as well as the final story have elements of hope to them, so the picture isn't entirely bleak. Once I figured out what was going on, the non-chronological storytelling choice was genius. It takes a bit of puzzling out, but the reading experience is greatly enhanced by having to figure out where you are in time, what are the characters up to, wait a minute Paige isn't here because why? What happened!? You'll find out after several more stories, when the narrative finally gets around to it. It sounds frustrating, but due to the brevity of the stories(and the collection as a whole - it clocks in under 300 pages) it didn't bother me, because I knew I'd find out soon. The characters featured in these stories are vividly real, but deeply flawed, individuals who make bad choices, repeatedly. Regardless, I found myself caring for them, even as I was so incredibly frustrated with their actions. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, so be aware going in that these characters are made of flaws, and it's not necessarily something that ever gets set right. It's interesting to me that, after reading some other people's thoughts, I saw that wasn't the only one who was mistaken about the content of this collection when I picked it up. I believe it's a combination of the cover design, the title, and the way the stories were teased on the back cover, but it's funny to me that there's such a misconception that this collection features horror stories. It doesn't. On numerous occasions you may (or should) briefly be horrified, but the focus of these stories is not to evoke any kind of sustained horror. Rather, it's slice of life about family, poverty, trauma, loss, and ultimately, choosing to live.

MEET ME IN MAINE
MEET ME IN MAINE
Each week, I will share a chapter of Meet Me In Maine, the first in The Blue Harbor Series. I’m working on the second in the series, which will further explore the Penobscot Indians and their unique history and culture. Chapter One I slammed the front door and peeked at the retreating figure through the living room curtains. Martin’s black hair glistened in the bright sunshine, his rugged face…

The Eskudáit [Penobscot mythology; Native American mythology]
Will-of-the-wisps, also called swamp lights or ignis fatuus, are small, fast-moving flames that are sometimes seen in swamps. They are magical to behold, so it’s understandable that many civilizations from around the world assumed them to be supernatural creatures. Sometimes they are portrayed as floating lanterns, spirits holding a lantern (like in the first image), sentient balls of fire (as in the second image) or similar interpretations.
If I understand the phenomenon correctly, they are caused by the biological degradation of decaying organic matter. Gases are released that ignite when coming into contact with air, causing sparks. And if those sparks happen to hit a pocket of flammable swamp gas, you get a flame that ‘dances’ in the air for a while before disappearing.
To the Penobscot people of North America, these lights were thought to be the Eskudáit: enigmatic fire spirits. These beings are unwelcome because their appearance always heralds some bad event: if the Eskudáit is sighted floating over a home, that means someone in that household will die in the near future. If the spirit flies in a certain direction, some kind of disaster will happen soon in that location. It is possible to see the floating flame ‘burst’.
It is actually uncertain whether the belief in the Eskudáit might have arisen from will-o’-the-wisps or comets in the night sky, or perhaps something else entirely.
