Polyneuropathy: understanding peripheral nerve damage
What is polyneuropathy?
Polyneuropathy is a neurological condition characterised by damage to several peripheral nerves. These nerves, which connect the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to the rest of the body, are responsible for transmitting sensations and motor commands. When these nerves are damaged, it can lead to a range of symptoms, from mild tingling to complete paralysis.

What causes polyneuropathy?
The causes of polyneuropathy are many and varied. They include
- Diabetes: This is one of the most common causes of polyneuropathy.
- Vitamin deficiencies: In particular vitamins B1, B6 and B12.
- Autoimmune diseases: Such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
- Alcoholism: Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the nerves.
- Certain infections: Such as Lyme disease or HIV.
- Medicines: Some treatments can have neurotoxic side effects.
- Genetic diseases: Certain hereditary diseases can predispose to polyneuropathy.
- Poisoning: Exposure to certain toxic substances can damage the nerves.
What are the symptoms of polyneuropathy?
The symptoms of polyneuropathy vary depending on which nerves are affected and the underlying cause. The most common symptoms are
- Sensory disorders: tingling, pins and needles, burning, numbness, loss of feeling.
- Pain: Sharp, stabbing or burning pain.
- Muscle weakness: Difficulty walking, grasping objects.
- Problems with independence: Urinary or intestinal problems.
How is polyneuropathy diagnosed?
The diagnosis of polyneuropathy is based on :
- Clinical examination: The doctor asks the patient about their symptoms and carries out a neurological examination.
- Complementary examinations:
o Electromyogram (EMG): This examination assesses muscle and nerve function.
o Nerve conduction studies: These studies measure the speed of conduction of nerve signals.
o Nerve biopsy: In some cases, a small portion of nerve may be removed for microscopic examination.
o Blood tests: To look for underlying causes (diabetes, deficiencies, etc.).
What are the treatments?
Treatment for polyneuropathy aims to halt the progression of the disease and relieve symptoms. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the disease. Treatments may include
- Treatment of the underlying cause: For example, controlling diabetes or stopping alcohol consumption.
- Medication: To relieve pain, sensory disturbance and muscle weakness.
- Physiotherapy: To maintain muscle strength and mobility.
- Orthoses: To relieve pain and improve walking.

Vitamin B¹² is an essential vitamin that body needs. What is it? Vitamin B¹² is a water-soluble vitamin, it is also known as cobalamin vitamin. Your body will only utilise what is needed, the excess will pass through urine. Vitamin B¹² is extremely essential it is apart of the red blood cell production. There are particular steps in which B¹² is needed, to be absorbed by the body, in the acidic environment of the stomach (Hydrochloric acid). The Intrinsic factor released by the parietal cells in the stomach, binds to vitamin B¹² then it is subsequently binds with the intrinsic factor. The intrinsic factor is a protein made by the stomach which B¹² combines itself in order for absorption. B¹² deficiency causes major health issues such as: • Peripheral nerve damage • Cognitive Impairment • Megaloblastic anaemia The most effective and absorbed form of vitamin B¹² is methycobalamin, it is utilised more efficiently by the liver, brain and nervous system. Please make sure you check with your health practitioner beforehand, as you may need blood tests to see your levels of vitamin B¹², before taking any supplements. . . . . #vitaminb12 #vitaminb12deficiency #vitaminb12essex #vitaminb12benefits #vitaminb12foods #vitaminb12london #vitaminb12booster #vitaminb12supplement #vitaminb12richfood #vitaminb12food #methylcobalamin #watersolublevitamins #cobalamin #redbloodcell #hydrochloricacid #parietal #peripheralnerve #megaloblasticanemia #healthtips #christmasrecovery #healthychristmas (at Harold Hill) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6smi6IpCHq/?igshid=1fh47n6ws0zbc

Hey, do you have any advice on how to water larger plants? Like plants in a 12in+ pot. I overwatered my first large plant and it died. I’m hoping not to kill my new one. I seem to do pretty okay with small to medium sized plants but the larger ones are a bit harder
It’s not really the size of the pot, so much as the specific plant and the health/size of its root system. It could be the pot was too large for the plant orrrr it was just a difficult plant to keep happy indoors. If the plant is overpotted with a pot far too large for its root system, it can be easy to overwater because the soil on the edges of the pot may appear dry while the soil around the root system and lower down is still wet.

Guillain–Barré Syndrome Market Analysis, Epidemiology and Market Forecast to 2030
Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. GBS can range from a very mild case with a brief weakness to nearly devastating paralysis, leaving the person unable to breathe independently.
Most people eventually recover from even the most severe cases of GBS. After recovery, some people will continue to have some degree of weakness.
Key Highlight of Guillain–Barré Syndrome Market As per the “National Institute of Health,” the Incidence of Guillain–Barré Syndrome is estimated to be 6–40 cases per 1 million people. As per the “National Institute of Health”, AMAN and AMSAN together account for 30–50 % of cases in Asian countries and Latin America but only 3–5 % of cases in North America and Europe. AIDP is the most frequent form of Guillain–Barré Syndrome (accounting for around 90% of cases), and thus the term GBS, in general, is synonymous with AIDP in Western countries.

15 Questions, 15 mutuals
Tagged by @tinyzoologist :D (thank you!)
1. are you named after anyone?
Nope!
2. when was the last time you cried?
Hm, I don’t remember the last time I fully cried, but I got a bit emotional on Friday after some friend drama went down and I was explaining it to my husband.
3. do you have/want kids?
I’m actually not sure. My husband and I are both really on the fence about it, but I think eventually we will probably get to a place where we feel ready. I just can’t see it at all in the near future. Definitely a dog is the next step, haha.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
Not really, but I have been told that I make a lot of weird voices/noises when I’m joking around haha.
5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?
This is going to sound really hippy-dippy, but like...their energy? The way they hold themselves. Body language.
6. what’s your eye color?
Brown lolz. I am always jealous of people with fancy eyes like, “Oh my eyes are green but with a fleck of gold in the left one and the right one has just a hint of blue” etc. Nothin’ special here! I have been told that my eyes are very big though o_O
7. scary movie or happy ending?
Happy ending :) I’m horrible with scary movies!!
8. any special talents?
I am a birder, so I know a lot of different bird ID’s and calls! I also like to doodle from time to time :)
9. where were you born?
USA
10. what are your hobbies?
Hiking, playing video games, D&D, cooking, fermenting things in my apartment (currently trying ginger beer!), replaying all of my interactions with other people over and over in my head and cringing at myself :p
11. do you have any pets?
Not now, but I hope to soon!
12. what sports do you play/have you played?
Ultimate frisbee currently, and I used to run cross-country and track in high school.
13. how tall are you?
5′3″ !
14. favorite subject in school?
Biology, art, and I actually did like math, even though I didn’t continue with it. I liked the challenge of it....
15. dream job?
Ooo, professional dog cuddler? I also always thought it would be cool to be an animator for Disney/Pixar. In the science world, the dream would be to be a scientist that can tinker around with whatever my heart desires with no worries about money.
