mildly off brand post for me but last night i learned that the american red cross offers an online training course on first aid/CPR techniques for cats and dogs for $25 USD. it’s COMPLETELY self contained to an online module, takes 1-2 hours depending on your reading speed, and will give you a two-year pet first aid certification.

it can be really scary when your pets are sick or injured, and for me personally, taking this class made me feel more secure and confident that i’ll know what to do in the event of a pet emergency! it teaches how to easily check your pet’s vital signs, how to administer cpr on cats and all different sizes of dogs, how to perform a canine/feline Heimlich maneuver, and how to administer basic first aid to several different types of injuries.

My dog has had several seizures over the past day (and one we thought was an airway obstruction on the 22nd), and it might be the result of starting monthly Simpairica on the 15th. Now I'm watching him like a hawk (he's resting with his butt against me atm...), and he's going to the vet for tests and to get on seizure medication. This has all left me pretty frazzled. The point is, be careful about giving your dog Simpairica. It's probably fine for some dogs, but it is linked to seizures, even in dogs who have never had any before. Read up on seizures in dogs and be safe and prepared. During a seizure, protect them from anything they might bang into. Stay clear of their mouths, as they can't control their jaw muscles and might bite. Don't worry, they won't swallow their tongues, that's a myth. And contact your vet asap. A seizure lasting more than five minutes is when you should rush your dog to an emergency veterinary clinic.

How do you give CPR to a cat? Also, is the lego set of Hedwig worth it? It looks so cute in pictures

This video is the most concise and easy to understand example of a cat CPR technique that I can find.

Feline CPR differs from human and canine in that we apply compressions to the heart using a one-handed technique rather than the locked palms and elbows technique that we use on humans and dogs. This greatly lowers the risk of damaging the ribs or other areas by applying too much force during compressions.

For comparison, here's an example of CPR on a dog.

All pets owners should have a basic understanding of pet CPR, in my opinion.

Also the Hedwig Lego set is great! Very intricate in that you can actually make the wings flap. I'll post a proper photo once I've finished it :)

The shift from G1 First Aid to IDW First Aid is like… I dunno, it’s like seeing a cute animal and then getting your fingers nearly bitten off by said animal, or finding a bug that looks cute but ends up having scary fangs/mandibles and can fly, like, really really fast.

G1 First Aid wears a mask because he’s far too cute not to.

IDW First Aid wears a mask for the same reason, but also wears one because without it, he’d probably bite too many people and have to be escorted off of the Lost Light.
