The Saint: The Reluctant Revolution (5.4, ITC, 1966)
"You seem to know a lot about what's happening in our small country?"
"Well, I know from what I've seen so far that the sooner you get rid of this present lot, the better."
"Good! Then, uh, then you will... you will help us?"
"I was just waiting for the invitation."
#the saint#the reluctant revolution#itc#leslie charteris#john stanton#leslie norman#roger moore#barry morse#jennie linden#martin benson#peter illing#gerard heinz#michael godfrey#peter halliday#john garrie#louis raynor#maria roza#norman florence#clive cazes#a familiar Saint plot‚ as Simon gets mixed up in the civil unrest of a fictional country (this week‚ San Pablo) and throws his lot in with#the rebels. it's worth noting tho that this feels like a somewhat darker treatment of the trope; Simon is witness to the execution by#firing squad of an 18yr old boy‚ and later is present (if not actively involved) for the killing of a traitor in the rebel ranks. a solid#cast of familiar faces but the stand out is of course Barry Morse‚ in one of his earliest british tv appearances; despite being english by#birth and having got his start at RADA‚ Morse had spent most of his career in the US until this point‚ including a long running co starring#role on The Fugitive (and guest spots in iconic series like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits). he'd end up as something of an ITC#regular‚ later taking supporting roles in The Adventurer and Space: 1999. here he's an american crook who's attached himself to the#president of San Pablo; actually the show is almost subversive in its depiction of this state being controlled by a local officials whose#greed and corruption is exploited by US agents (not just the crook played by Morse‚ but brief mention of US oil concerns playing a major#role in determining the current and future policies of this country). i mean the CIA aren't mentioned by name but it doesn't take a lot of#squinting to read between those lines...

I wonder what it is about the sport of hockey specifically that inspires this many poems. I've not seen any other fanbase like this one.
200 of those hockey poems are admittedly on me. but with that said, i dont know if hockey is any more romantic than any other sport. ive for sure been weird about other rpf pairings before hockey (read: brocedes) & ive seen wonderful cycling, motogp & baseball edits. i think it might just be that there's something so very real and beautiful about live sports.
(cue the mark halliday poem. you know the one)
Tumblr media
do you see?? do you get it??? football!! romance!!!! high stakes!!! athleticism!! the simple act of catching a ball somehow being the most important thing in the world!! the precision of it!! P O E T R Y
i think everybody should be a romantic when it comes to sports.

and as for poetry:
"The qualities I appreciate most in my favorite soccer players happen to be the same ones I appreciate in my favorite poets: beauty, creativity, flair, imagination, skill—all words, incidentally, that I’d attach to Pelé and Romário."

and okay. a few more sports poems while im at it:

also Catch by Samiya Bashir which always reminds me of this poem by Trygve Skaug (@lemondropbois edit)
also these lines from "The crowd at the ball game" by William Carlos Williams:
So in detail they, the crowd, / are beautiful // for this / to be warned against // saluted and defied— / It is alive, venomous // it smiles grimly / its words cut—
Kevin Young's Brown is full of baseball poems and therefore incredible

i wont end on my own words. Abdurraqib makes this point more eloquently than i ever could:

Hot Vintage Stage Actress Round 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lisa Kirk: Emily in Allegro (1947 Broadway); Lois Lane/Bianca in Kiss Me, Kate (1948 Broadway); Doris Walker in Here's Love (1964 Broadway)
Mary Martin: Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun (1947 National Tour US); Nellie Forbush in South Pacific (1949 Broadway); Peter in Peter Pan (1954 Broadway); Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959 Broadway)
Propaganda under the cut
Lisa Kirk:
She’s so fucking stunning. She did some dubbing work for movies and her voice is all husky and sultry and I just hhrrrnngh

Mary Martin:
I just know y’all are gay for Peter Pan actresses so you better vote for the og Peter Pan lesbian

And some photos of Martin as the title character in One Touch of Venus:

She didn't think she was hot enough to play Venus, so this happened (from My Heart Belongs, her autobiography):
Richard [Halliday, Martin's husband] dealt with my problem in a most imaginative way. He asked if I had ever been to the Metropolitan Museum. Of course, I hadn’t. So he took me to that huge place, led me to where the statues are, and said, “Look, this is a Venus.” We must have seen fifty varieties: tall ones, short ones, even one who was noticeably broad of beam. All were marked “Venus.” “You see?” Richard asked. “Each sculptor has his own idea of Venus. They aren’t all Venus de Milo.” After this had sunk in, he said, “You can play Venus. You’re going to play her wearing the most beautiful clothes in the world.”
And another song that's very far from the Peter Pan image:

Man in a Suitcase: No Friend of Mine (1.21, ITC, 1968)
"Mr. McGill? Let me introduce myself. I am Gombi Masuto."
"Well, I think you know me and the guy with his gun in my back."
"I owe you an apology, but would you have responded to a polite invitation?"
"Well I can't say, cos I didn't get one."
#man in a suitcase#no friend of mine#1968#itc#classic tv#charles crichton#john stanton#richard bradford#clive morton#errol john#allan cuthbertson#peter halliday#peter williams#harvey hall#ralph michael#philippa gail#danny daniels#horace james#pat connell#a kind of mirror image to 1.16 (The Whisper); where that episode had a brilliant narrative hamstrung by some regrettably dated attitudes to#racial tensions and anti colonial struggles‚ this episode is hugely more satisfying on a political front (the white land owners being#explicitly the villains and agitators‚ and even the typically reticent McGill supporting independence for the fictional African country#of Kalunga) but has one of the sloppiest scripts of the series‚ with multiple gaping plot holes that should have been picked up on during#production. in particular the murder of Bates‚ which occurs offscreen and for no apparent reason‚ is never explained‚ nor the culprit ever#even hinted at; similarly‚ Philippa Gail's sheltered wife character is present when McGill is identified as an undercover operative and yet#her sudden discovery of that same fact later in the episode is treated as a twist which sets up the final showdown. these issues bothered#me even as a kid and i long wondered about possible deleted scenes or post production issues which may have caused problems; alas Pixley is#for once no help at all‚ his bible making no mention of these narrative issues. it does tho provide a lovely little story about Peter#Halliday‚ terrified of his impending fight scene with Bradford (having heard about his tendency toward rough realism) throwing himself at#the star's feet and confessing cowardice in a (successful) attempt to break the ice and win him over

Note
do you like book recs? because there’s a really good book on the end Cretaceous extinction I read called The Last Days of The Dinosaurs by Reilly Black. and also one I really didn’t like called The Ends of the World by Peter Brannen. that one’s fine i guess but it’s kinda outdated and he keeps calling some extinct creatures weird and disgusting which was really offputting because they’re just little guys!
sorry for rambling in your ask box, I’ve just got strong opinions on that last one
Oh I know about Riley's book! I may or may not be friend/acquaintances with Riley (since before she transitioned o-o)(we have taken silly photo booth photos together that are still on my fridge)
there's also Otherlands by Halliday in terms of books about extinct ecosystems!

Latest interesting Mormon history find:
Apostle George Q. Cannon (the balding man with the white beard seated in the center of the picture) and fourteen bishops, all imprisoned for polygamy at the Utah Territorial Penitentiary. The photo is from November 1888. There are quite a few photographs of various combinations of imprisoned polygamists taken at the "Pen".

Abraham Kimball (bishop, Kanosh Ward) (Unlike the rest of the prisoners and like the guards, he is not in prison clothes. He was suffering from tuberculosis and was released early, dying the next year. If he was sick or about to be released that may be why he's dressed differently.)
