* 1 An Introduction to Mana *

For the sake of continuity, we will briefly introduce the concept of mana to the uneducated.

Mana, as defined by the Archmages of the Order of Robes in 567 PE1, is the magical energy imbued throughout the natural world. Our most common interaction with mana comes in the form of the sigils2 of a mage mark3.

There are twelve types of mana that are well understood: air, chaos, darkness, death, earth, fire, illusion, knowledge, life, light, stasis, and water. In pre-Establishment times, there was said to be a thirteenth mana, so-called arcana. We, of course, now know this to be incorrect. The historical arcana is, in fact, merely an uncharged form of raw magical energy. It’s uncharged state (see the following section 1.2 for charge) allows it to rapidly and naturally convert itself into other forms of mana around it.

1.1 Basic Notation & Terminology

In this first section, we will explore the basic notation and terminology used throughout the rest of this work.

1.1.1 Mage

A mage is defined by the Archmages of the Order of Robes4, circa 569 PE, to be a wielder of mana. Specifically, it is a human that has obtained the ability to wield one or more different types of mana, both externally available and from an internal reservoir. Notice that the definition excludes any magical creatures able to wield mana. This was intentional.

An archmage has long been understood, circa 420 BE5, as a master mage of his particular mana types.

1.1.2 Weaves

The process of creating & casting spells is called weaving, as it involves entwining individual strands of mana together. The more experienced a mage is, the more strands they can weave together at once, resulting in more complicated (and so, more powerful) spells.

Tying is the process of separating a fully woven spell from the mage. In order to fully persist after being separated from its caster, the tied spell must be embedded into an object or creature, a process called enchanting.

Circle magics or circle weaving happens when a group of mages (2 or more) gather and link themselves and their weaves together. It is a rare talent, but can be learned with enough time & dedication. A spell woven in such a way is referred to as a tapestry and is incredibly powerful.

1.1.3 Aura

Every mage has an aura, which is the leaking effect of mana generated by the body combined with the like-attracts-like nature of Gantulga’s Law6. A mage creates an aura nearly immediately after sparking just by being in the vicinity of like mana. The leaking effect begins contributing after the adjustment phase7 ends, as that is when the body adjusts to its particular tolerance of internal mana reserve and begins to safely expel the overflow.

1.1.4 Mana Burn

Regular practice and utilization of mana, particularly of the body’s internal reservoir, will naturally expand and grow the amount of internal mana available to a mage at any given time.

However, no mage can control an infinite amount of mana (whether or not it’s a type they can wield). In fact, crossing your limit is a very good way to get a permanent internal wound, usually referred to as mana burn. Mana burns are scars along the mana lines of the body, which inhibit the flow of mana. Channeling too much mana can cause irreparable damage to the mana lines if left untreated, resulting in felling (losing the ability to weave mana altogether) or, more often, death.

While there have been cases of life and chaos mages healing mana burn scars, the common process to repair such scars is long, tedious and, usually, painful. The repair requires intense therapy involving very controlled mana flow until the blocking scars have been cleared from the mana lines. This can take years, and, depending on the severity of the initial mana burn, the mage may never reach full strength again.

Note some hold overs of the treatment of magic preceding this establishment may be referenced, i.e. rune enchantments in some cultures still referred to as shard casting.

6.  This, of course, references the well understood concept that a mana of a particular type, such as water, will gravitate towards its own kind. However, to a more general degree, we have Young’s Equality, which states that weaves of the exact same, but opposite, charge will be drawn towards one another, while that of the same charge will repel. This is thought to be a safety mechanism of some kind, so that the weavings of the world itself are not undone, but free floating arcana can still be created and utilized.

7.  The adjustment phase ends usually one to two weeks after the initial sparking, in which the mage’s body adapts to the sudden and unfamiliar influx of mana. The symptoms of this are classified by mage charge (see section 1.2).

i feel like a gorillaz movie would be the nail in the coffin for their schtick, which is that the characters actually exist and are real celebrities, (even though they haven’t bothered to incorporate this into the project since 2018 i believe). unless the hypothetical movie is a mockumentary, which it was not going to be, it would have been terrible. they’ve already tarnished their legacy by becoming lore-heavy instead of sticking to social commentary through character interviews and music videos, but a movie would probably be seen by a lot more people, so they’d become known for a shitty action-adventure flop instead of their music.
