#Physics 101 sample 101 series series
Engineers use these series diagrams to map out a potential circuit much like an architect uses blueprints. Series Circuit DiagramĪ circuit diagram uses symbols that represent different parts of said circuit. When you turn off a lamp, you’re really just breaking the series circuit. In basic terms, the series circuit is made up of a power source that travels through a path connected to the switch, then up to the bulb, and back again. Lamps are another example of why a series circuit can come in handy. This breaks the series circuit and keeps the water from getting any hotter than intended. But when the thermostat can tell that the water has reached its target temperature, it’s able to switch off. The power is able to flow through the thermostat and into the heating element, which in turn heats the water. That is, power flows to a water heater through a thermostat, which is rigged to be able to tell the temperature of the water. Photo Courtesy: Nattawat Chakreyanan / EyeEm/Getty Images Water heaters, for example, illustrate how useful series circuits can be when one needs to cut off the flow of electricity. In order to better understand the additional advantages of series circuits, let’s take a look at some common household items that tend to use them. Since the current flows evenly throughout the entire circuit, you’ll get the same readings no matter what part of the circuit you measure. It’s also easier to read a series circuit with an ammeter or a voltmeter, should you desire to do so. Otherwise, you might have two or three lights that shine like rockstars while the others produce a weak glow. Instead, a single strand of wires simply connects one light to the next so that they all form a handy line.Īnother advantage? Each light in a strand gets its equal share of electricity. Because they utilize a series circuit, it’s not necessary to connect every single light to a power source with its own wire. Going back to our candle example, if the second person in the circle has a candle that just won’t light, they can’t pass the flame on to the third person.Ĭonsider the case of string lights, for instance. Since electricity travels through each device along a path, all it takes is one device to burn out to put the rest in jeopardy. Series Circuit ProblemsĪs efficient as a series circuit can be, it isn’t without its downside. The power source sends electricity to the first device the electricity flows through that first device and into the second, and so on, until, eventually, all of the devices are connected, one right after the other. In essence, that’s how a series circuit works. That pattern would continue until everyone’s candle was lit. That second person will then use their newly lit candle to light that of the person to their left - and so on. One person in the circle lights their candle - and then they light the candle of the person to their left. Need a visual of how it works? Think of a group of people standing in a circle, each holding a candle. Photo Courtesy: Emilija Manevska/Getty Images While a single series circuit may power multiple devices, every part of the circuit, including all of the devices, wires, and the power source, are connected along the same path. In a series circuit, there’s only one pathway the electricity can flow through.

Iichako vs Kacchako vs Tsuchako: aka: Who should Ochako be with (besides Deku)
 mysterylover123
Uraraka is certainly one of the show’s more shippable characters. Though the series has set her up to be the ‘obvious’ straight endgame pairing for Midoriya, the fandom has found lots of potential relationships for her with other people along the way, and 3 stand out as the most popular and probable: Tenya Iida (her best male friend besides Deku), Katsuki Bakugou (her respectful rival) and Tsuyu Asui (her best female friend). In the interests of truly determining which of these three has the strongest relationship with Uraraka, I’ve composed this long-ass meta, where I basically catalogue every moment involving each dynamic together to figure out which one should really be Uraraka’s endgame relationship (aside from Izuocha).
So here goes.

10 Things: CubeSats — Going Farther
Now that the MarCOs — a pair of briefcase-sized interplanetary CubeSats — seem to have reached their limit far beyond Mars, we’re looking forward to an expanding era of small, versatile and powerful space-based science machines.
Here are ten ways we’re pushing the limits of miniaturized technology to see  just how far it can take us.
Tumblr media
1. MarCO: The Farthest (So Far)
MarCO, short for Mars Cube One, was the first interplanetary mission to use a class of mini-spacecraft called CubeSats.
The MarCOs — nicknamed EVE and WALL-E, after characters from a Pixar film — served as communications relays during InSight's November 2018 Mars landing, beaming back data at each stage of its descent to the Martian surface in near-real time, along with InSight's first image.
WALL-E sent back stunning images of Mars as well, while EVE performed some simple radio science.
All of this was achieved with experimental technology that cost a fraction of what most space missions do: $18.5 million provided by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which built the CubeSats.
WALL-E was last heard from on Dec. 29; EVE, on Jan. 4. Based on trajectory calculations, WALL-E is currently more than 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) past Mars; EVE is farther, almost 2 million miles (3.2 million kilometers) past Mars.

2. What Are CubeSats?
CubeSats were pioneered by California Polytechnic State University in 1999 and quickly became popular tools for students seeking to learn all aspects of spacecraft design and development.
Today, they are opening up space research to public and private entities like never before. With off-the-shelf parts and a compact size that allows them to hitch a ride with other missions — they can, for example, be ejected from the International Space Station, up to six at a time — CubeSats have slashed the cost of satellite development, opening up doors to test new instruments as well as to create constellations of satellites working together.
CubeSats can be flown in swarms, capturing simultaneous, multipoint measurements with identical instruments across a large area. Sampling entire physical systems in this way would drive forward our ability to understand the space environment around us, in the same way multiple weather sensors help us understand global weather systems.

3. Measuring Up
The size and cost of spacecraft vary depending on the application; some are the size of a pint of ice cream while others, like the Hubble Space Telescope, are as big as a school bus.
Small spacecraft (SmallSats) generally have a mass less than 400 pounds (180 kilograms) and are about the size of a large kitchen fridge.
CubeSats are a class of nanosatellites that use a standard size and form factor.  The standard CubeSat size uses a "one unit" or "1U" measuring 10x10x10 centimeters (or about 4x4x4 inches) and is extendable to larger sizes: 1.5, 2, 3, 6, and even 12U.
Tumblr media
The Sojourner rover (seen here on Mars in 1997) is an example of small technology that pioneered bigger things. Generations of larger rovers are being built on its success.
4. A Legacy of Small Pathfinders
Not unlike a CubeSat, NASA’s first spacecraft — Explorer 1 — was a small, rudimentary machine. It launched in 1958 and made the first discovery in outer space, the Van Allen radiation belts that surround Earth. It was the birth of the U.S. space program.
In 1997, a mini-rover named Sojourner rolled onto Mars, a trial run for more advanced rovers such as NASA's Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity.
Innovation often begins with pathfinder technology, said Jakob Van Zyl, director of the Solar System Exploration Directorate at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Once engineers prove something can be done, science missions follow.
Tumblr media
5. Testing in Space
NASA is continually developing new technologies — technologies that are smaller than ever before, components that could improve our measurements, on-board data processing systems that streamline data retrievals, or new methods for gathering observations. Each new technology is thoroughly tested in a lab, sometimes on aircraft, or even at remote sites across the world. But the space environment is different than Earth. To know how something is going to operate in space, testing in space is the best option.
Sending something unproven to orbit has traditionally been a risky endeavor, but CubeSats have helped to change that. The diminutive satellites typically take less than two years to build. CubeSats are often a secondary payload on many rocket launches, greatly reducing cost. These hitchhikers can be deployed from a rocket or sent to the International Space Station and deployed from orbit.
Because of their quick development time and easy access to space, CubeSats have become the perfect platform for demonstrating how a new technological advancement will perform in orbit.

6. At Work in Earth Orbit
A few recent examples from our home world:
RainCube, a satellite no bigger than a suitcase, is a prototype for a possible fleet of similar CubeSats  that could one day help monitor severe storms, lead to improving the accuracy of weather forecasts and track climate change over time.
IceCube tested instruments for their ability to make space-based measurements of the small, frozen crystals that make up ice clouds. Like other clouds, ice clouds affect Earth’s energy budget by either reflecting or absorbing the Sun’s energy and by affecting the emission of heat from Earth into space. Thus, ice clouds are key variables in weather and climate models.

7. First Dedicated CubeSat Launch
A series of new CubeSats is now in space, conducting a variety of scientific investigations and technology demonstrations following a Dec. 17, 2018 launch from New Zealand — the first time CubeSats have launched for NASA on a rocket designed specifically for small payloads.
This mission included 10 Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa)-19 payloads, selected by NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative:
CubeSat Compact Radiation Belt Explorer (CeREs) — High energy particle measurement in Earth’s radiation belt
Simulation-to-Flight 1 (STF-1) — Software condensing to support CubeSat implementations
Advanced Electrical Bus (ALBus) — Advances in solar arrays and high capacity batteries
CubeSat Handling Of Multisystem Precision Time Transfer (CHOMPTT) — Navigation plans for exo-planetary implementation
CubeSail — Deployment and control of a solar sail blade
NMTSat — Magnetic field, high altitude plasma density
Rsat — Manipulation of robotic arms
Ionospheric Scintillation Explorer (ISX) — Plasma fluctuations in the upper atmosphere
Shields-1 — Radiation shielding
DaVinci — High School to Grade School STEM education
8. The Little CubeSat That Could
CubeSat technology is still in its infancy, with mission success rates hovering near 50 percent. So, a team of scientists and engineers set out on a quest. Their goal? To build a more resilient CubeSat — one that could handle the inevitable mishaps that bedevil any spacecraft, without going kaput.
They wanted a little CubeSat that could.
They got to work in 2014 and, after three years of development, Dellingr was ready to take flight.

9. Going Farther
There are a handful of proposed NASA missions could take CubeSat technology farther:
CUVE would travel to Venus to investigate a longstanding mystery about the planet’s atmosphere using ultraviolet-sensitive instruments and a novel, carbon-nanotube light-gathering mirror.
Lunar Flashlight would use a laser to search for water ice in permanently shadowed craters on the south pole of Earth’s Moon.
Near-Earth Asteroid Scout, a SmallSat, would use a solar sail to propel it to do science on asteroids that pass close to Earth.
All three spacecraft would hitch rides to space with other missions, a key advantage of these compact science machines.

10. And We’re Just Getting Started
Even if they're never revived, the team considers MarCO a spectacular success.
A number of the critical spare parts for each MarCO will be used in other CubeSat missions. That includes their experimental radios, antennas and propulsion systems. Several of these systems were provided by commercial vendors, making it easier for other CubeSats to use them as well.
More small spacecraft are on the way. NASA is set to launch a variety of new CubeSats in coming years.
"There's big potential in these small packages," said John Baker, the MarCO program manager at JPL. "CubeSats — part of a larger group of spacecraft called SmallSats — are a new platform for space exploration affordable to more than just government agencies."

Coma is Robin Cook's first commercially successful novel, published by Signet Book in 1977.(1)Coma was preceded in 1973 by Cook's lesser known novel, Year of the Intern (also published by Signet Book).(2)
Synopsis(edit)
Susan Wheeler is an attractive, 23-year-old third-year medical student working as a trainee at Boston Memorial Hospital. Susan, along with four other students—George, Harvey, Geoffrey, and Paul—takes rounds in surgery rooms and ICUs making post-treatment notations on the health of patients. Mark Bellows, a surgery resident in the hospital, is the instructor and supervisor of this group.

The book is a journey into the inner workings of a hospital. As these students complete their three-month surgical rotation, the dilemmas and problems faced by a woman in a so-called 'man's' profession are also highlighted.
It comes to Susan's attention that two patients, Nancy Greenly and Sean Berman, mysteriously went into comas immediately after their operations. These incidents were attributed to complications due to anesthesia. Nancy Greenly became comatose when her brain did not receive sufficient oxygen during surgery. Similarly, Sean Berman, a young man in his 30s in good physical condition, underwent a scheduled knee operation. Despite the operation's success, Sean failed to regain consciousness. Medically, the odds for such occurrences are one in 100,000; however, such odds seemed resolutely higher at the Boston Memorial Hospital.

Baffled by these two patients, Susan decides to investigate the causes behind these peculiar events and of other recent coma victims. Susan discovers the oxygen line to Operating Room 8 has been tampered with to induce carbon monoxide poisoning in patients during surgery, ultimately causing brain death. At the same time Susan develops a brief, but intimate, relationship with Bellows and discusses her findings with him. After unraveling further details, and evading pursuit by a man hired to kill her, Susan is led to the Jefferson Institute.
The institute is hailed as an intensive care facility designed to cut down on heavy medical costs. Patients who are declared brain dead or 'vegetables' are referred to the institute. Here, Susan finds that patients are suspended from the ceiling by wires in rooms walled by glass, and moved from room to room with little human involvement. The 'samples' are kept alive and healthy until a call for an organ comes in. The organ of choice is removed surgically (without consent) and then sold on the black market.

'Coma' is a medical mystery/thriller by Robin Cook. It was the initial book that earned him the reputation as a successful author. It's a pretty good book. A little weird in places. And the main character has all the common sense of a doorknob. Susan is a third year medical student in Boston just starting her first day at Memorial hospital.
Howard Stark, chief of the Department of Surgery at Boston Memorial, is revealed as the main antagonist. Stark confronts Susan over her findings and then drugs her, intending to put Susan in a coma under the pretext of an appendectomy. However, Bellows manages to disable the 'oxygen' line during the operation, thereby preventing a full dose of carbon monoxide poisoning. Stark is arrested, but Susan's fate is left in doubt.
Background(edit)
Cook's first book had not sold particularly well so he studied the common ingredients of best sellers and felt that, for an unknown writer, mystery-thrillers had the best chance of success. He was particularly influenced by Jaws, Seven Days in May and the novels of Eric Ambler. His original publisher did not want it but Little Brown agreed to give him a $10,000 advance.(3)
Critical response(edit)
Coma's literary awards and acclaims include a long tenure on the New York Times best seller list (reaching its highest position 'Number 6' in the fiction category.(4) The novel was included in the Fiction category of 'The New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year' listing (the forerunner to The New York Times's current '100 Notable Books of (Year)' listing) from which the 'Best Book of the Year' is selected. The New York Times Book Review also called Coma 1977's 'number one thriller of the year'.
Adaptations(edit)
The story was made into a highly successful film, Coma by Michael Crichton in 1978.
The story was adapted again into a two-part television miniseries aired in September 2012 on A&E television network.(5)

Plot: When it came to the logistics of the dorm, whether it was the way it looked or its cleanliness, Hwang Minhyun was the man in charge, and that was the reason why he had named his role as being the “cleaner” and the “environmental gardener” of Wanna One. The other boys were grateful, of course, and soon started to depend on him when they had claimed that their items had “grown legs and ran away” and he would find it in a flash. In other words, he was their caretaker. However, what happens when their precious Hwangje falls terribly sick with a high fever and the flu? Will the members be able to sustain themselves and keep the dorm clean like how Minhyun would want it to be? What kind of adventures would they find themselves having? Stay tuned to find out.
A/N: Yup, I know I claimed that I did not have the time to write full scenarios but this inspiration came about by listening to a series of happy songs, looking through Wanna One’s handwritten profiles and finding out that this Innisfree 360-degree video had actually been filmed in their dorm. Coupled with Minhyun’s love for cleanliness, this idea came to me pretty quickly and I soon found myself finishing one entire chapter in a combined span of 2-3 hours? ^^;; Hope you guys would enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it! :) Perhaps this could serve as a sample for you guys for future requests! ^^
——————————————————————
When the adjective “clean” came to mind, all of the members of Wanna One would probably associate it with their fellow member, Hwang Minhyun. He was the perfect package that anyone could ask for in a band with his good looks, god-sent falsettos, stable vocals, height and prince-like visuals to match. In fact, those traits probably explained why he had earned the nickname “Emperor Hwang” and especially the endearing “Nation’s Husband”.
Furthermore, he was also blessed with an exceptional character. Minhyun was mature, calm, level-headed and always seemed to be the “namaste” factor of the band. He, too, had a heart of gold and always put others before himself. Sometimes, on hindsight, he forgets about his own physical and emotional well-being, which worries the members, but he never seemed to notice it. Lastly, he was also extremely hardworking and with 7-8 years being a trainee and an artiste as a part of Nu’est, it was clear that he was a natural and adaptable being to their newfound showbiz. Despite all this, he remained humble and tended to cringe and laugh when someone gave him genuine praise with his ears turning lobster red.
At this point, what is there not to love about Hwang Minhyun or more like the endearing “Hwangje” that the members address him as?
However, even though Minhyun looked like the type who would probably spend more time going through his skincare routine than lifting a finger around the house, he was pretty much the opposite with the latter. In actual fact, he was always cleaning, all day and every day. If he had nothing else better to do (or more like he just wanted to because it was already habitual), one could easily see him either sweeping, mopping or just putting things back into place and sorting them into alphabetical order or colour. If he was not in the house at any point in time, he was probably outside watering the plants with the garden hose in the backyard or mowing the lawn.
The members always gave him strange looks when he sees them sorting out their shoe cabinet or wiping the seemingly spotless floor, but left him be. To them, it was more of a therapy after all he went through on Produce 101 Season 2 and they sympathised with the way he felt.
How could they forget?
He was the only one from Nu’est to make it to the top 11 and Jonghyun, whom everyone thought that he would make it, stood at #14. Everyone was happy for the rest of the 10 and bright smiles were seen on their faces as they hugged the other trainees that they missed dearly, but Minhyun was the complete opposite once again and it broke him to see that he was the only one who made it in. They knew. They knew that if Minhyun could give up his seat, he would do it in a heartbeat with no hesitation and even though they tried to be strong for him (like Jonghyun advised), they could not help but feel their heart hurt a little whenever they took a glance at Minhyun to see if he was alright.
Perhaps cleaning was his way of therapy and relieving stress.
Everyone was different; Woojin and Daniel danced their frustrations away, Jaehwan would strum his guitar to sing the blues and Daehwi would search for new food recipes to try out and engage in various mukbang videos et cetera et cetera.
As time went by, the members started to rely a little more on Minhyun to keep the dorm clean and the garden well maintained. They did not need to say it when they could not find stuff because Minhyun would sense it right away and would probably passed them whatever they were looking for with a smile and LOTS of nagging that will ensue. On live broadcasts and interviews, there are times when they would complain about the former’s incessant nagging but they all know that if they did not have someone like him, their dorm would not only turn into a pig sty and they would probably not get along well either.
Sure, he was clearly defined to be part of the “Hyung” line but he was also the quiet cheerleader, as well as the glue of the entire band in general. It was something they needed and yes, Wanna One could now be reassured that with Minhyun, their friendships and memories would probably be something that they would never forget and they could be still talking and keeping in touch, even when Jisung turns 50.
That thought just brought a smile to everyone’s face and they would always try their best to show their gratitude to Minhyun for spending the next 18 months with them. Again, it was difficult for him to move out of the dorm that he had shared with the Nu’est members for the past 6-7 years and adapt to a completely new environment. Sure, he had been in the same team with most of them, but that did not mean that Minhyun knew everyone personally and considering his introverted personality, that frightened him and for the first few days, he spent most of the time either quietly sitting in the garden watching the clouds or reading a novel in the living room as the rest of them caught all the rest that they had lost from Produce 101, as well as their already hectic schedule.
At first, Minhyun felt lonely and detached, even when he was constantly surrounded with his 10 other group mates, but he figured that he should start warming up to them too if he truly wanted the team to succeed. And besides, a team was only as strong as its weakest link. Soon, he started finding himself getting closer to Jaehwan and Woojin, his roommates, and also started to get to know Guanlin and Jinyoung a little better, and became the second mother (the first being Sungwoon) or that dependable older brother that the younger ones could rely on.
Deep inside, he did not want to disappoint the fans, and most importantly, worry the fellow Nu’est members. All of them had spent their last few moments with him by his side and they were all worried, especially when Minhyun was not one to show any other emotion except happiness and positivity. Furthermore, the fans were the ones who got him here; they voted for him, despite the odds that he had already debuted in a once successful band and this was the least that he could show his gratitude for the LOVEs who had stuck by him.
Strangely, on this very day, Minhyun was simply not feeling too well today. He was out of breath during practice and he had experienced some occasional dizziness when they took short breaks in between the long hours that they had spent mastering the strenuous choreography. They had to make their debut stage good for the fans, he thought, and used that as his motivation to practice one last time before they retreated back to the dormitory for the night.
“Hwangje-ah,” Jisung asked in a concerned tone, “You okay?? You look a little pale…”
“I’m fine,” Minhyun grimaced and drank even more water, hoping that it will help him ease the headache that was on its way, “And besides, it’s just one more practice. I will be fine.”
Jisung clearly did not buy it, but he understood what Minhyun wanted and rubbed soothing circles on his back as a form of encouragement and Minhyun only showed his gratitude with a bright smile and his signature laugh, while putting his arms around Jisung in the hopes to assure him that the former would be able to stand on his own two feet for a little more.
True enough, the manager had kept his word and let them off to go back to the dormitories to rest and shower, while he goes out to buy them dinner. Wanna One were clearly way too tired to move, especially with all of them lying on the floor and panting heavily. There was a pin drop silence in the studio for once and all that could be heard was the heavy pants, growling stomachs and if one were to keep absolutely quiet, one could probably hear the sound of the members’ hearts palpitating against their chest.
And with that, they proceeded to pack their stuff, ensuring that they did not leave anything behind and took refuge in the van that was already parked outside the building to bring them home. Minhyun took slow steps, almost tripping down the steps as he felt a sharp pain at the back of his head, but he only smiled when the rest shot him looks of care and concern so as to act as if he was okay.
The flight of steps felt endless, but he finally took refuge in the back row of the van, snagging the window seat so that he has something to put his head on and rest. Once seated and belted in, he placed his head against the window, only to realise that the last thing he heard was the incessant chatter of the members and their fight for the remaining window seats.
As expected, Minhyun had overestimated the distance and was clearly in a deep sleep, clueless to whatever was happening around him. He felt like he was tapped awake, but his eyelids refused to open and his whole body started to ache. In response, he probably groaned to show his desire to be left alone in the car to catch his much needed sleep as a remedy for his pounding head.
“Hyungggg,” one of the maknaes whined, “We are already home and all of us are ready to eat!! Manager hyung’s home!!”
“Is he alright?? He was feeling exceptionally breathless before our last practice and looked like death for a moment.”
“Really? Honestly, he actually does look like he’s shivering now but it’s 30 degrees celcius now and the atmosphere is apparently at a 65% humidity level??”
Minhyun heard all of this, but he was obviously too tired to respond and could not find the much needed energy to. His whole body felt like lead and it was as if he had attached himself to the side of the car, and more specifically, his head to the back window.
Soon enough, he felt a hand being placed on his forehead, followed by a loud gasp and a sudden rise in volume when the person spoke.
“Hyung!!! He’s burning!!” The member shouted in shock and there was the sound of people scrambling back into the van again.
He felt another hand on his forehead again and another on his neck, before he heard an “Oh no… He really is.”
“We can’t leave him here hyung!! What do we do?”
“Daehwi please, we are obviously not going to leave him here. Come, help me get him. He’s a little too tall for me to handle all alone.”
“We can try to wake him up maybe?? And besides, the dorm is just right there.”
“No. We don’t need him to injure himself even more. He nearly tripped down the stairs just now if you guys did not notice.”
“Alright then, we cannot wait forever so I will go and get him. Jinyoung, grab his things and bring them up. Jisung hyung, please explain to the manager what happened too. Lastly, Seongwoo hyung, I need you to help me get him on my back.”
Minhyun was then back in a noisier environment with the shuffling of bags and Jinyoung packing his things neatly before he got out of the car and followed behind the rest of the members. Meanwhile, Minhyun then felt a presence of someone in front of him and another adjusting Minhyun’s sleeping position so that he was now leaning on his fellow member’s back with arms slung around his neck. With some effort, Seongwoo had also managed to hoist Minhyun up enough, just so that the member carrying him (most likely Daniel) could get a solid hold of Minhyun’s thighs.
His eyes still remained closed and he wanted to say something about letting him go and that he was fully capable of walking on his own, but all that came out was tired moans and groans as he attached himself to Daniel’s broad back with Seongwoo probably getting ready to support Daniel should Minhyun slip off by accident.
He could not see their facial expressions at that point, but it was probably laced with concern and worry, especially with their debut stage coming in 3 weeks time. And at this point, Seongwoo and Daniel had a short discussion that Minhyun could barely make out, before he felt himself moving rhythmically to Daniel’s footsteps.
“Hyung… Hang in there please. We are almost home. Just… Stay with us for now and I hope you can still hear us as we talk. Really hyung, we are 20 steps away from your bed.”
Minhyun could still hear them, thankfully, but he succumbed to the fatigue with his heavy head and fell into a deep sleep once again.

QUEENS 1930s
I’ve begun to think about “stuff” lately.
Forgotten New York celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and I didn’t start on it until 1998, when I was 40 years old. This was just a few years after the World Wide Web started getting really popular; had the internet been around in the 1970s, think of how large Forgotten NY would be by now. If you’re keeping score there are 3,715 separate posts, which consist of tens of thousands of images, if you estimate ten images per page (many posts have one image but many have 100!) To cut to the chase, I’m thinking about legacy. In the immediate offing, I’m covered by the Greater Astoria Historical Society, which will continue the hosting if I’m run over by a streetcar or something. Long-term? I’m 61 now (in 2019), and hope to do this as long as I’m physically able. My energy levels are still as good as ever — I do a lot of walking and bicycling, though I can’t walk 20+ miles a day like some friends (to my frustration).
How will Forgotten New York be remembered when it ceases everyday production? Well, as a photographer and chronicler of New York city infrastructure, I’d be honored to be whispered about in the same breath as photographers Percy Loomis Sperr, Eugene Armbruster, Edgar “E.E.” Rutter, and the anonymous photographers who shot every property in New York City for tax purposes; their work can be found in the New York Public Library archives and in the NYC Municipal Archives. Their photography was primarily documentarian over esthetic: there wasn’t a budding Ansel Adams in the bunch. For esthetics, you’d be advised to turn to Berenice Abbott, who deftly managed to combine both everyday chronicling and beautiful photography, having been influenced by the great Parisian art photographer Eugene Atget and by artists Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. I don’t aspire to Abbott’s artistry, but I certainly aspire to the great documentary powers the other photographers I mentioned were able to achieve.
Remember, photography was an expensive, cumbersome business for all mentioned above. I have a camera with a small, thin chip in it that can record over 1,000 pictures depending on its setting, as well as a portable telephone that has an excellent camera almost as an afterthought. Street photography has never been easier. As far as modern work goes there’s Matt Weber, one of the best New York street photographers, and for night photography the best I’ve seen is Mitch Waxman, who sticks mainly to western Queens, especially the Newtown Creek area.
A few years ago, I got my mitts on nearly 1,000 photographs taken all over Queens between 1929 and 1940 primarily as a method of recording recent street paving jobs. Thus, the focus is on roadways, either those recently repaved or are about to be repaved. Everything else seemed to be done as a sidelight though, as you’ll see, some fascinating building interiors were also recorded as part of the project. I have a somewhat busy weekend with a tour scheduled, so I thought I would take a few of these and scribble something about what I’m seeing in each.
164th Street at Jewel Avenue, looking north, July 7, 1936
In the late 19th and early 20th Century, a trolley line connected Flushing and Jamaica, running originally through the farms and fields of Fresh Meadows. The above image was captured at 164th Street and Jewel Avenue in 1936, just a few months before service ended in 1937. In short order, the tracks were pulled up, the weeds paved over, a center median added, and 164th Street became the fast and furious stretch we know it as today between Flushing Cemetery and the Grand Central Parkway.
South of Grand Central Parkway the trolley line veered off 164th and rode on its own right of way to a terminal on Jamaica Avenue at about 160th Street. In the decades since, most of this trolley route has been either eliminated or hidden pretty well, but the four-lane width of 164th Street is a legacy of the route. As you can se there was one lane of traffic on the east side of the street, with the rest taken up by trolley tracks. This photo was about a year before service ended, and the line seems to be in decline, with plants and weeds sprouting between the tracks. For more information see Stephen Meyers’ book, Lost Trolleys of Queens and Long Island.
In the photo, the lengthy building seen on the right distance is still there in 2019.
Jewel Avenue is an unusual named street that runs from Forest Hills across Flushing Meadows-Corona Park all the way to Fresh Meadows. It’s the only remnant of a group of streets east of Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills named in alphabetical order that turn up on maps from the early 20th Century. The streets in sequence were named Atom, Balfour, Chittenden, DeKoven, Euclid, Fife, Gown, Harvest, Ibis, Jewel, Kelvin, Livingston, Meteor, Nome, Occident, Pilgrim, Quality, Ruskin, Sample, Thurman, Uriu, Verona, Webb, and Zuni; it’s likely the streets were only on the planning boards till they were built mid-century, by which time they carried the numbers (68th Road, 68th Drive etc) they do today. I don’t know why the Jewel Avenue name was kept; it’s one of the few non-numbered streets, along with Northern Blvd. and Roosevelt Avenue, that cross Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
The above photo was taken by the Somach Photographic Company, which also did a large amount of work recording what NYC streets looked like in the 1930s.
Ocean Promenade (Rockaway Beach Boardwalk) at Beach 101 Street
I cropped out the date on this photo to get my optimum width, but again, it’s sometime in the mid-1930s in late April. The season is just getting started at Gobel’s hot dog and hamburger stand. Note the barrel that was used to dispense Hires’ Root Beer. Silex coffeemakers debuted in 1915 and merged with Proctor Electric in 1960, creating the Proctor Silex company, which merged with Hamilton Beach in 1990.
The photos have largely yet to see the light, but in October 2018 I walked the length of the Rockaway Beach boardwalk, which aside from a short section by Riis Park near the Marine Parkway (Gil Hodges) Bridge, runs continuously from Beach 126th to Beach 9th Street (numbered streets on the peninsula get bigger from east to west). In 2012, Hurricane Sandy did a number on the old wooden boardwalk and it needed to be rebuilt virtually for its entire length. It’s now a state of the art seaside walk, but at the loss of the old “boardwalk” feel as synthetic materials were used instead of good old wood planks.
What is also missing are boardwalk-side vendors like this; I have a wealth of photos depicting these stands which numbered in the dozens. What happened to them? The closure of the Rockaway Playland amusement park in the early 1980s didn’t help, and today, not one remains. Also: “Specifically [Robert Moses’] 1939 road to nowhere called Shore Front Parkway. As part of the construction, no businesses or dwellings were allowed within 200′ of the boardwalk and a lot of homes, businesses and about half of Playland.
Capitol Diner, Lawrence Street, February 18, 1932
This E.E. Rutter photo of a roadside railroad-car style diner was taken in an era when fast food franchises such as Starbucks and McDonalds did not exist. Yet it can be said that the Dunkin’ Donuts of the world are the direct descendants of such road food stands, which evolved into steel and chrome diners. Such diners are now themselves dying out, as their owners retire and developers prefer to build multistory buildings in their footprints.
Yet, these small diners, the earliest of which were located in decommissioned railroad cars, were nearly ubiquitous even in downtown areas in the 1930s and 1940s; they’re all over scenes in the Municipal Archives linked above.
In 1969, the Department of Traffic (now Transportation) decided to rename 122nd Street, College Point Causeway, Lawrence Street, and Rodman Street under the single moniker College Point Boulevard. a short stub still bears the name Lawrence Street in Queensboro Hill. You have to be a little careful with the labeling on these photos; the “College Point Causeway” moniker only applied to the current stretch of College Point Boulevard on the diagonal stretch between 26th Avenue and the Whitestone Expressway; south of that, the bulk of the road was called Lawrence Street and that’s where this photo was likely taken.
On the ads, the Willys-Knight Company produced autos between 1915 and 1933. Willys, named for John Willys, developed one of the first “jeeps” used in World War II and the brand name survived until the late 1950s and a series of mergers. The Whippet was a popular model named for the racing dogs, in production between 1926 and 1931. And,
The Scranton & Lehigh Coal Company was one of Pennsylvania’s large coal companies, supplying the Northeast with anthracite and other coal products. The engines that powered Brooklyn ran on coal; everything from heating homes and apartments, to heating the offices, schools, and churches of the borough, to the huge boilers that powered the many factories in the city. Coal was the fuel that kept it all going until well after World War II. Even today, a coal furnace still turns up here and there; they were long lasting, powerful, but simple heat producers. [Brownstoner]
“Theater building,” Lawrence Street, February 19, 1932
Another Rutter photo from the same period, also labeled College Point Causeway, shows a former domicile that has been turned into a billboard for several local movie theaters and the features playing at the time.
On the top floor are bills advertising the Taft Theatre, opened on Main Street in 1917 Flushing and renamed after President William Howard Taft, who passed away in 1930. It was a first run theater, but could not compete with the nearby RKO Keiths and Prospect Theatres, and closed in 1955. Both the Keiths and the Prospect survived until the mid-1980s: the RKO Keiths shell building is still on Main and Roosevelt Avenue, awaiting redevelopment. The Loew’s Valencia in Jamaica has been a church for several decades, but its near-phantamagorical detail has been preserved.
As far as the features go, The Champ was a 1931 film directed by King Vidor about a broken-down boxer played by Wallace Beery (who won the Best Actor Academy Award) and his son, played by Jackie Cooper, who had a lengthy career: he played Daily Planet editor Perry White 47 years later in the first Christopher Reeve Superman. Little-remembered today, Marie Dressler earned a Best Actress nomination in Emma.
Newsstand, Cross Island Boulevard, July 22, 1938
This photo is slugged “Cross Island Boulevard” which is the former name of Francis Lewis Boulevard; when the Cross Island Parkway was built in the late 1930s, Cross Island Boulevard was renamed shortly afterward to avoid confusion.
Depicted is a typical newsstand of the period. The top shelf is full of romance and movie magazines, few of which survive today. Titles such as Popular Science, Better Homes and Gardens and Good Housekeeping are still in business today, but none of the newspapers shown, The Long Island Daily Star, The New York Sun, and the North Shore Daily Journal, are. The New York Sun was revived as a daily in the 2000s and still exists in online form.
Laurel Hill Boulevard and 47th Street, March 28, 1938
Nothing in this photo remains; the buildings on both sides have long been razed, and Laurel Hill Boulevard is now the service road on either side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Changes were soon to come to this placid scene as the first Kosciuszko Bridge was spanning over Newtown Creek and the BQE was planned to connect Brooklyn and Queens. Once in Queens, the BQE was slated to follow the diagonal route of Laurel Hill Boulevard between the creek and Queens Boulevard, whereupon it would turn north to fork into two sections at Grand Central Parkway.
Laurel Hill Boulevard, named for a small neighborhood in Queens between Calvary Cemetery and 50th Street north of the LIRR Montauk tracks, dates back to the colonial era when it was paved with shells and known as Shell Road. It skirts the right end of Calvary Cemetery before following the BQE to Queens Boulevard.
James Gilder Bar & Grill, March 30, 1938
The James Gilder bar was located in one of the buildings depicted in 1938 that would soon give way to BQE construction.
Interborough Parkway, Cypress Hills Cemetery, January 27, 1932
The Jackie Robinson Parkway along with the Grand Central were the first of NYC’s “parkways” providing express (more or less) auto through-routing built within New York City. The “Jackie” unusually begins at the confluence of Jamaica and Pennsylvania Avenues in East New York, twisting through a convoluted route through the “cemetery belt” and Forest Park at the Brooklyn-Queens border, meeting the Grand Central at Flushing Meadows.
Here it is pictured as it was constructed in Cypress Hills Cemetery on January 27, 1932 in an E.E. Rutter photograph. Rutter chronicled the “Jackie,” which was called the Interboro Parkway until 1997 when it was renamed in honor of the first African American major league baseball player, who himself is interred in Cypress Hills. The parkway was rebuilt to handle modern traffic volumes from 1987-1992, eliminating the last traces of the original railings and overpasses seen here.
Metropolitan Beer Gardens, Metropolitan Avenue at Union Turnpike, June 28, 1933
Before the Interborough Parkway opened in 1935, narrow, two-lane Metropolitan Avenue was one of the main traffic routes connecting the Brooklyn waterfront and Jamaica. It was constructed as the Williamsburg and Jamaica Turnpike during the James Madison presidential administration in the 1810s and renamed Metropolitan Avenue after the Civil War. Union Turnpike (its name suggests it was originally tolled, as Metropolitan avenue had been) is a somewhat newer route and remained incomplete until the early 20th Century as an extension of Union Avenue, originally a short route in Glendale.
In the early 1930s, the Interborough Parkway was under construction, paralleling Union Turnpike for a portion of its route. No trace of the Metropolitan Beer Gardens exists today, and either the parkway construction or Prohibition (repealed in December 1933) may have done it in; beer gardens around town either went the speakeasy route or sold “near-beer” containing less than 0.5% alcohol by volume.
PS 63, October 30, 1929
Public School 63, which still exists today in a newer building (a massive edifice at Sutter Avenue between 90th and 91st Streets in Ozone Park) is pictured in a 1929 photo by E.E. Rutter. Though it’s slugged “Linden Boulevard” I can’t be sure it was located on that street as in the early 20th Century, Linden Boulevard, which has its origins miles to the west in Flatbush, was extended east through Queens in a halfhearted fashion; today Linden Boulevard exists in a number of separate pieces in Ozone Park, regaining traction for good in South Jamaica, where it runs continuously into Elmont in Nassau County along the former route of Central Avenue.
I suspect this photo was taken on Old South Road which decades ago was renamed in sections as Pitkin Avenue and Albert Road. Indeed, the present PS 63 is called the Old South School, which might cement it for you.
Soda Candy, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, April 26, 1938
Though Rockaway Beach Boulevard was rerouted in the 1970s a block north of this location and given extra lanes, a short, one-block stretch was left over and actually this portion of the road still exists. One thing you notice about this corner grocery is the Meadow Gold Ice Cream “privilege sign” in which a company would pay for a sidewalk sign, provided its product was prominently shown on the sign (several Coca-Cola signs around town in this category still exist. Meadow Gold, which also distributes other dairy products, is still found in several parts of the country.
Smith Brothers Ice Cream, Ditmars Boulevard and 23rd Avenue, East Elmhurst
One such Coca-Cola “privilege sign” can be found at this roadside grocery at Ditmars Boulevard and 23rd Avenue near Glenn Curtiss Airport, now LaGuardia Airport. In the forefront is a placard for Smith Brothers Ice Cream, a popular brand in the early 20th Century. This brand was not originated by the bearded fellows on the cough drop boxes, but company scion Richard Smith developed the Früsen-Gladjé, Chipwich, Eskimo Pie and other dessert brands.
Van Wyck Expressway at 95th Avenue, September 7, 1934
The furiously mustachioed Robert Anderson Van Wyck was the first mayor of Greater New York, serving from 1898-1901. His involvement with American Ice, a monopoly in the necessary commodity before the age of universal refrigeration, cost him his political career. Nonetheless when a major route was built between Jamaica Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard in the early 20th Century it received his name, Van Wyck Boulevard.
In the early 1950s, NYC traffic czar Robert Moses built the Van Wyck Expressway along this route from Flushing Meadows south to Idlewild, now JFK Airport. The west side of Van Wyck Boulevard was retained, while everything on the east side was demolished; the buildings ween on the right side of the photo at 95th Avenue still stand. Since hundreds of residences were retained this is one of the few Expressways in NYC that have numbered addresses.
Van Wyck likely pronounced his name with a long “why” but today, most locals use the WICK pronunciation.
Lawrence Street (College Point Boulevard) at 36th Avenue, February 18, 1932
The Flushing Main Street station is so-called because there used to be a Flushing Bridge Street station located on the Long Island Rail Road Whitestone Branch, which operated from the mid-1800s to 1932, branching from the Port Washington line at Flushing Meadows and running north and east to Whitestone Landing at the East River at 152nd Street. After the LIRR unsuccessfully tried selling the line to NYC to operate as a subway line (presumably a connection would be made to the Flushing Line, today’s #7 train) the LIRR shut it down for nonridership.
This photo shows the branch as it crossed Lawrence Street, now College Point Boulevard; the Flushing Bridge Street station was just east of here. When the tracks and signals were cleared away, the one-block stretch of King Road would replace them.
Gas station, Whitestone Parkway, July 27, 1937
Among the items seen are a coin-operated public telephone, a Gulf calendar, and an ad for the upcoming World’s Fair to be held in Flushing Meadows in 1939. The Parkway gained expressway status some years after the Whitestone Bridge opened in the mid-1930s.
I’ll get back to recent photos — but from time to time, I’ll be showing some of these classics to indicate how much has changed and how much has stayed the same. You can find much more in the book I wrote with GAHS, Forgotten Queens.
Check out the ForgottenBook, take a look at the gift shop, and as always, “comment…as you see fit.”

Music Law 101: Common Music Licenses
Tumblr media
In our previous posts in our Music Law 101 series, we have covered the basics of copyright law, including the scope of copyright protection, copyright ownership, the exclusive rights of copyright, the duration of copyright protection, transfers and termination of copyrights, and copyright infringement and fair use. In this post, we continue on the topic of copyright law and discuss common music licenses.
Like any other property, music copyrights and the individual exclusive rights thereof, can be transferred, sold, licensed, and divided among several owners.  In general, to use recorded copyrighted music, you will need permission from both the musical work owner (typically a publisher) and the sound recording owner (typically a record company).  Note, however, if you re-record a song (instead of using a pre-recorded version), permission generally is only required from the musical work owner (since you are not using someone else’s sound recording).
Following are descriptions of common music licenses:
Mechanical Licenses:  This type of license authorizes the audio-only reproduction of a musical work, which is typically controlled by a music publisher.  For example, a record company will enter into a mechanical license agreement with a music publisher or other musical work owner to authorize the reproduction and distribution of a recording of the musical work.
Section 115 Compulsory License:  The Section 115 compulsory license is a statutory mechanical license that permits anyone to reproduce and distribute copies of nondramatic musical works, subject to certain conditions.  Such copies may include physical copies, including CDs and records, or copies made in connection with digital transmissions (defined as “digital phonorecord deliveries” or “DPDs”), including digital downloads, limited or “tethered” downloads, interactive streaming, and ringtones.  The conditions of the Section 115 license include the following:
The copyright owner must have distributed the musical work to the public (that is, the copyright owner has the right to control the first use of a musical composition);
The user’s primary purpose must be to create and distribute “phonorecords” or DPDs to the public for private use (there is no compulsory license to use music with video);
The user may make a musical arrangement of the work to the extent necessary to conform it to the style or manner of interpretation of the performance involved, but the user may not change the basic melody or fundamental character of the work;
The use cannot involve copying a sound recording (unless separate permission is obtained from the owner of the sound recording); and
The user must pay a compulsory license royalty.  The royalty rates are set by the Copyright Royalty Board, which is composed of three full-time judges appointed by the Librarian of Congress.
As we will discuss in our next post, the recently-enacted Music Modernization Act changes the process for obtaining and administration of the Section 115 compulsory license, particularly for digital music providers such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal.
Master Use Licenses:  This type of license authorizes the reproduction of a sound recording, which is typically controlled by a record company.  For example, one would need a master use license to put together a compilation record of existing recordings, to use a “sample” of an existing recording in a new song, or to use an existing recording in a film.  There is no statutory compulsory license for the reproduction of sound recordings, so master use license fees can vary widely.
Synchronization Licenses:  This type of license, also known as a “synch” license, authorizes the reproduction of a musical work to be used in connection with visual images, such as a motion picture, television show, or television commercial.  Synch license fees can vary widely. And, keep in mind that synch licenses generally only cover the musical work. If an existing sound recording is to be used in the new audiovisual work, a master use license is also required from the record company.
Performance Licenses:  The performance of musical works, for example, by playing songs on the radio, on television, on a website, or in stores, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, is generally permitted under performance licenses issued by the three performing rights organizations (“PROs”):  ASCAP (www.ascap.com), BMI (www.bmi.com), and SESAC (www.sesac.com). A new PRO has also recently entered the scene—Global Music Rights (www.globalmusicrights.com). On behalf of affiliated writers and publishers, PROs generally issue blanket performance licenses to music users, and license fees are based on a variety of factors.
Section 114 Compulsory License:  Performance licenses for the use of sound recordings are only necessary when the performance is via digital audio transmission, such as for Internet radio stations.  The right to publicly perform a sound recording can be secured through a compulsory license under Section 114 of the Copyright Act, subject to certain conditions. The statutory license is administered by an organization called SoundExchange.  Unlike PRO licenses, SoundExchange does not offer or negotiate a license agreement. Rather, a webcaster must file a “Notice of Use” with the U.S. Copyright Office along with a filing fee before it starts streaming. Upon filing, a website is automatically entitled to the Section 114 statutory streaming license, provided the webcaster complies with several statutory conditions, including the following:
The webcast cannot be interactive (that is, songs cannot be played “on demand” and songs cannot be played within one hour of a request or at a time designated by the listener).
The webcast must include the information encoded in the sound recording by the copyright owner, such as the title, featured artist, and other related information.
The webcaster cannot, during any three-hour period, play more than three sound recordings from one album (and no more than two songs played consecutively) or four sound recordings from the same artist or from any set or compilation.
The webcaster cannot publish an advance program schedule or make a prior announcement of when specific songs will be played.
The webcaster must make monthly payments to SoundExchange at the statutory rate determined by the Copyright Royalty Board (which varies depending on the type of service provided).  SoundExchange, after deducting operating costs, disburses 50% of the collected royalties to the copyright owner (typically the record company), 45% to the featured recording artists, and 5% to the non-featured musicians and vocalists.
Print (Lyric) Licensing:  This type of license, secured from the songwriter or music publisher, as applicable, permits the printing of sheet music or lyrics to a song, for example, for karaoke CDs, websites, T-shirts, and posters.
In our next Music Law 101 post, we will close out the topic of copyright law and discuss the new Music Modernization Act and explain the important changes it makes to copyright law.
The Music Law 101 series is provided by Coe W. Ramsey and Amanda M. Whorton of the law firm Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard LLP.  Brooks Pierce provides sophisticated and strategic counsel to a wide variety of clients in the entertainment industry, including artists, musicians, songwriters, record producers, DJs, artist managers, radio stations, television stations, new media companies, record and publishing companies, film and television producers, advertisers, actors and reality TV talent, radio talent, and literary authors and publishers.  The Music Law 101 series provides a survey introduction to the laws in the United States relevant to the music industry, is not intended as and shall in no way be construed as legal advice or a legal opinion on any specific set of facts or circumstances, and shall not be construed as creating an attorney-client relationship.

Horror Branded Content
Tumblr media
(~2300 words, 9:30 minutes read)
Branded Content Outfit: a firm or group of firms covering many niches related to a subject or topic. A branded content network or distributor has different sub-divisions or products that can be unbundled from the chain as a standalone brand or line each.
I think I’m seeing this marketing modality badly executed. I’m seeing it this way pertaining to the horror film industry.
Let’s look first towards a successful horror fiction writer. I was going to write an article on Stephen King, but I decided not to. Even if I love his novels, it’s not pertinent for me to write about him on this Tumblog since it would be straying from the subjects I decided to focus on.
Yet, I wanted to mention him, because he is a great example for those looking to make a dent in the horror brand arena.
I think he transcended the branded content stage, first creating his personal, consistent and interlocking mythopoetic horror world, and ultimately becoming a horror household name.
If you read my previous post, you know that I used to be addicted to reading books when I was a child. Thankfully, skater/hc-punk friends pulled me out of that when I was a teen, and I didn’t read again until the fag-end of my teen years.
My way of exploring branded content, without having to invest a big amount of money to do it, was resorting to identity design.
I have the capacity of liking and being enthusiastic and passionate about an above-average quantity of things. My challenge was organizing all my niches in ways that minimized the disparity between the topics.
I achieved the needed organization classifying my subjects and creating a different identity for each broad niche and its sub-niches. This was a basic coping-mechanism for my ever increasing list of interests. I started doing this years ago, not knowing that it would be very useful to me when I decided to put to good use my knowledge and skills.
Even if coping mechanism can’t be called branded content, it has some points in common with it, at the personal level.
Let’s analyze a few branded content firms that specialize in the horror genre.
Production Outfits and Streamers
Shudder
Tumblr media
A great idea, that I personally think would benefit if it expands to global markets. Seen from the audience's side, I think it would definitely benefit horror fans outside of USA if they opened the service to non-US subscribers.
I don’t have Shudder and haven’t even tried it, but just seeing its offer, especially the things they produce makes me wish I had it.
Netflix’s User Interface Horror
Tumblr media
Since Netflix as a production company still has a lot of room for improvement in the horror genre, let’s just bash it about its user interface.
After a little over a year as a subscriber, my personal conclusion about Netflix is that it’s great for horror TV series. You can sample and watch from the big series catalog they have. Their offer of original and licensed horror series is big.
Still, Netflix’s selling point to me is its price, since the balance between price and quality is beneficial for the subscriber. My personal opinion is that you get a lot of bang from your buck when you subscribe.
I don’t understand those that dis Netflix. Maybe they had a preconceived idea that it was going to be a substitute for having a personal film library, which is way removed from what Netflix has to offer. You’ll have a library of the movies you like that Netflix was able to license only.
Compared to a collectibles marketplace. If you know the business model of Valve/Steam, you know that Steam game buyers don’t physically own the games in their libraries.
The nightmare of Steam video game collectors is if something happened with  Valve/Steam and the loss of their collection of games. Netflix has an equivalent to this, the Steam games owner’s worst nightmare. But dealt to the user in smaller, albeit constant, doses.
You can have the greatest curated movie list on your Netflix account, but movies can and actually do disappear from it. I don’t have much of a problem with this, but I do with the way this happens.
When for some reason Netflix pulls a movie from the catalog, it stays in your list, but you aren’t able to watch it. Obviously, the only way of finding out is clicking on it, which is, I think, preposterous. You have to depend on a site that tells about imminent pulls in advance to cope with this.
Another thing, that due to the outdated interface, obliges you to work outside the portal to make your use of it more efficient.
Beyond the licensed classic movies and blockbusters (that for me are the hardest to find), I take it as a sampler and viewer of licensed series and in-house produced movies and series, what’s called Netflix Originals.
It’s good to have because I guess everything Netflix produces is impossible to find elsewhere. Even on the p2p networks.
Still, one thing that I see as very, very bad of Netflix is the minimalist interface. It’s difficult to curate good movies and organize your list.
The simplistic way it orders the movies in one’s personal list is a letdown because you can’t sort or otherwise order them in any way unless you install a Netflix-experience-breaking browser extension or use the User Ordered mode of the list. The User Ordered mode could have fields with information about the movie, like genre and year. But it doesn’t, and that makes it useless.
There’s the possibility of narrowing movies with the genres menu, but that still is inefficient compared with the possibilities of a more streamlined and feature-richer interface.
Search engines showed me alleged browser extensions to deal with this problem, but they don’t work. Don’t bother to install the browser extension that uses grease monkey, it doesn’t work and the provider is a twitch to keep it around, same for the search engines that take one to the pages that have it for download when searching for a solution to this Netflix problem.
I tried it (it’s called Netflix Queue Sorter) with Greasemonkey in Opera, Waterfox, and Firefox. It’s forget it, Pablo, absolutely nothing appears on Netflix page with the extension enabled.
Blumhouse
Tumblr media
I don’t know the nitty-gritty of branded horror cinema like what Blumhouse is doing for some years now. What I can say is that, for me, the end product leaves a lot to be desired.
The ultimate insult was to see an article that compared Jason Blum to Roger Corman. I didn’t bother to read it.
It’s wrong when the company’s approach is a profits-based one. Give Blumhouse credit as a profit-turning company, but their movies aren’t comparable to Corman’s by a long shot (no pun intended).
I guess I get the business model of Blumhouse. By keeping the production costs lean they have spare resources to make a greater quantity of movies in a shorter span of time.
To have an assorted and big catalog like that, and integrating all kind of marketing techniques before and the during the promotion, gives them a clear view of what audiences want. Then they have just to allocate resources to the properties that resonate with the audiences. And then... the numbers speak for themselves.
Why I think a system like this wouldn’t be sustainable, and why I dislike Blumhose so deeply? Because I’ve watched, I’d say around seventy percent of their movies and I can’t remember almost any scenes from practically any of them.
What’s more, when I remember a scene of any one of them, if I’m able to do that at all, the only thing that I remember is that I was disappointed by the movie while watching it. This is a basic sign that the movies aren’t good. Even if you go with practically null expectations into them, like I went into these movies.
I must have watched Paranormal Activity two, three or four years after it was released, and I really liked it. The low budget, indy approach was a highlight of what attracted me to watch it.
That’s why I kept on watching Blumhouse movies. But my disillusionment with the brand didn’t take long to make its presence felt.
It was depressing, to watch succeeding movies, each and every one of them having a lower value for me than the previous one.
Especially the Paranormal Activity series. From their whole catalog, I can say I like only the original Area 51, Paranormal Activity, Hush, Lords of Salem and Sinister 2.
That’s a pathetic low count of liked movies. The worst part of it all is that these movies cheat, you get used to them and end up enjoying them, but the non-memorable fact is the ultimate truth of them, they aren’t that good.
My final opinion about this company is, one, that they are trying too hard. Two, they go too much by the book. They’re doing what they were told to do in film school: a low-production-values, scarce-funding-resources approach to movie making, to be efficient in business and turn a profit. The result may be the investors getting rich, but a market flood with trash movies.
While I researched for this article, I was confronted with the unknowns.
Companies that I haven’t heard about, nor about their movies, but that slowly seem to be approaching movie-making the way Blumhouse does.
Other Horror Producers
Tumblr media
(still in business)
Zide/Perry Productions Hard Eight Pictures Practical Pictures Matinee Pictures New Line Cinema Parkes McDonald DreamWorks Pictures Benderspink New Regency Vertigo Entertainment Solana Films Room 101, Inc Twisted Pictures Lionsgate Platinum Dunes
Most of the contemporary horror movies are created by any of these companies.
On the other hand, these below I found them when researching for this article, and I think I haven’t watched any movie by them:
Dark Matter Dark Rift Films Terror Films Thriller Films Roller Disco Massacre Aventus Dark Dunes Eleven Film Last Doorway Productions
I have still to check out these companies.
Internet-based Horror Branded Content
One easy way to find out if a site is part of a branded content web chain is to look at the footer of the said site. If there are additional domains being offered, that’s most probably branded content.
Horror.net
Tumblr media
The aggregation system doesn’t have any flexibility for serious horror curating. It’s obvious that the horror community didn’t adopt it because of the obtuse and lacking features design.
This promotes a random frame of mind that pre-conditions one to accept whatever is given. Seriously, what were the designers thinking when they did this? It reflects on the content, very old, non-updated things.
A great idea badly executed. Naysayers will say it’s just a museum now. But let’s see it for what it’s worth. I’m sure that going through the pages of these portals would be a field day for curators.
Someday I’ll curate entries from this horror portal that survived through the years. I tested links, some are dead, but some took me to horror bloggers and such, sites still being updated that seem interesting.
I guess if your intention is learning about horror, its age makes it valuable due to the entries being so old. If the horror things they link to are still up, that does mean something.
Buried.com
Tumblr media
A monster site about horror. As I see it, the fun factor of for this site was very intended.
Horror Movies Database (12555 movies) Horror Movies Reviews (4900+ reviews) Horror Fiction Reviews (1000+ reviews) Horror Interviews (300+ items) Horror Editorials Horror Conventions Classic Horror Films: links to Horror.net’s tribute sites
Tribute Sites:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Evil Dead Friday the 13th Halloween A Nightmare on Elm Street The Living Dead
Samhain.com
Tumblr media
Halloween search directory. Sixteen sections with links to more than 1000 sites. The sections seem to cover almost everything related to Halloween. From the history of the holiday to even Halloween cooking to safety.
HauntedHouses.net
Tumblr media
Haunted houses directory. Currently broken.
Horrormovies.org / Brimstone Pit
Tumblr media
Horror movies database. Has a basic initial-based organization. Still, it also allows searching horror movies with its search function. It can be a broad search or narrowed down by title, plot, actor, director, producer, writer, composer or keyword.
ScreamQueen.com
Tumblr media
A directory for scream queens. I have to give credit to this site for the concept. It’s a really original and helpful concept to make a directory of scream queens. This is an important niche for many horror fans.
Cryptcrawl.com
Tumblr media
It’s another horror portal-cum-directory touted as horror and Halloween search. It has sixteen niches, that are similar but also different from horror.net’s twelve.
FirstFright.com
Tumblr media
Another original idea, a hub for press releases related to horror. A great idea, but they’re no longer accepting press releases.
Frightmaster.com
Tumblr media
Horror recommendations. Has a home feed of recommendations, the Frightmaster’s own database of endorsed horror movies. A nice idea, but the site is way, I’d say ~84%, out of order.
Bloody Disgusting
Tumblr media
From the site’s About page: “An independently owned champion of the horror genre established 2001”.
Bloody Disgusting mimics the branded content modality, with a silo approach to horror content. It also became a film production company and released more than half a dozen films.
Bloody Disgusting’s sections are:
Movies
TV
Reviews
Editorials
Videos
Video Games
Podcasts
Forums
Bloody Disgusting Select
Distribution company releasing genre films in AMC theaters and on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD. They have distributed around twenty productions.
HorrorWorld.org
Tumblr media
Something I noticed from this chain of content and collectible distributors, is that almost every site has a different founder.
JournalStone.com
Tumblr media
Horror books bookstore. Has PDF, .epub, .mobi and paperback formats available. If you buy the paperback version, you get the electronic one free.
DarkDiscoveries.com
Tumblr media
A quarterly color/glossy magazine published by JournalStone. It covers the horror, dark fantasy and science fiction genres.
BizarroPulpPress.com
Tumblr media
Another publishing outfit, related to JournalStone. The site has articles by Vincenzo Bilof. The ones I could find were either titled Meet The Author and The Tough Questions. They were brief interviews of authors. It has a link to Sean Leonard’s reviews at horrornews.net.
HorrorReview.com
Tumblr media
All kind of horror-related reviews.
BuyZombie.com
Tumblr media
A site dedicated to all things zombie.
Hellnotes.com
Tumblr media
Horror fiction, movies, and art. Similar to the other sites by HorrorWorld.org, but it has the best about page of the lot.
Outro
Tumblr media
This article was my way of getting started in knowing internet distributors of branded horror content. I thought it was more valuable to make it something public for others to benefit from it and give input if they care.
It wasn’t easy to find this kind of businesses without a pre-planned set of keywords. Worse if you stick to B, G, and Y only. You have to get used to using like a dozen more search engines.

Intro cinematic (can be represented in storyboard or graphic novel).
Gameplay sample.
Splash screen.
Start/option items.
Option has graphics, control, audio, and gameplay settings.
Start starts game with the potential for using a save slot.
Opening cinematic introducing at least some if not all characters or gameplay, story or rules, controls or options and so on, this trend repeats when opening new major portions of the game often featuring your character or characters and the major problems or enemies your facing, introducing you to the world or level and what gameplay you need to be concerned with or what options to consider within what rules or challenges (represented in storyboard or graphic novel).
The first level or hub world that is freely explorable and NPCs of different types, interactive, non interactive, event or mission triggering, hub or sub location servicing, etc. There would also potentially be pickup items or other interactive objects during regular hub/travel or other gameplay modes or interfaces and levels, also potential save spots which could also be handled in a pause screen (represented in concept art or graphic novel, developed into models and animations with controls, triggers, rules and NPCs handled by programming ).
An inventory and RPG like item management and character status, equipping, using items on or upgrading based on XP, special items, loot or accomplished missions, side quests or achievement in the main fighting or the mini games (represented by graphic design, written systems and programming).
A physics engine to make this all look and feel convincing including collision detection, gravity, momentum, rag doll, IK, particle effects, lighting, materials, rendering options, LOD, post-processing, UV mapping, 2D sprites, animated visual effects and more.
Camera setups for different situations (represented by engine options or libraries, templates and programming).
A series of main missions and stories that happen in the hub, in specified sub-locations or in other hubs & their specified locations, featuring one or more gameplay sequences including travel, fighting, collecting, choosing, mini-games, speed, timing, strategy, puzzle, & management. (represented by gameplay design, graphic novel of cinematics, trigger programming, rule programming, level designing, gameplay programming and testing, npc and environment programming, programming a result for every possible situation.).
Each of these gameplay styles will be fun and easy to pick up but difficult to master. (testing, gameplay design simple but endless challenge like checkers, rock/paper/scissors, darts, etc…).
Ending cinematic sequences with option to keep playing, restart or stop.
Potentially bonus features unlocked for completing missions, side quests, fighting cross, character item or upgrade scoring, thoroughness award, discovering secret items, completing possible activities, achieving well at mini games or making the right series of moves, choices or strategies could open up new features and Easter eggs.
Different levels of difficulty for different modes of gameplay.
Potentially more than one character, play style and ending.

“Never chase a ghost”: Roland says analog remakes aren’t coming
“Never chase a ghost”: Roland says analog remakes aren’t coming http://bit.ly/36FG4Ky
Roland is on-record in an interview about the new JUPITER-X & Xm that they’re not planning an analog remake – but that’s not actually what’s most revealing in the story.
It’s encouraging to see that the CEO of Roland, Jun-ichi Miki, is also an engineer. His latest comments on the Jupiter site are likely to frustrate fans who want analog remakes of Roland gear – and it comes with especially poor timing, as Behringer has just announced an analog remake of the TB-303 and profits from other low-cost analog remakes of other Roland gear.
But let’s read what he said and pick it apart:
We are very aware of the very strong passion that synth fans have for the JUPITER-8, and some continue to wait for us to introduce a true analog version. This is something we do not plan to do. Our founder Mr. Kakehashi always said, “Never chase a ghost”, and I really understand his meaning. “Chasing the ghost” of the original JUPITER-8 or TR-808 does not make sense as we will never catch them, and this effort would not align with our vision for the future.
The JUPITER-X & Xm Story [official Roland Blog]
I actually like the “chase the ghost” line. Now Synth Anatomy for its part points out (correctly) that Roland is remaking its past instruments, just using digital tech. But that descends into a predictable analog versus digital argument.
Here’s the thing: the digital remakes are a step forward. They allow battery power and completely stable tuning. The Boutique series are pretty conservative, adding modest features like new voice architectures or sequencing or the JUNO-106/60 switch on the JU-06A, all arguably part of that digital remake.
But on instruments like the TR-8S, you in fact get a big benefit from the digital reboot. I get an instrument that is A/B comparable to the sound of an original TR-808, but I can also mix my own samples and onboard effects, save elaborate presets, and take advantage of new sequencing and customization features, all in ways that the 808 can’t do.
It’s just not entirely clear what people want from analog remakes. Plenty of new instruments have proven that both analog and digital implementations can be viable, affordable, and musical. When it comes to remaking old analog circuitry, there are modeling efforts – Roland’s own circuit behavior tech being just one – that can produce compelling results.
It’s not likely to inflame as many online commenters, but I think the more telling admission from Roland is about their most recent crop of hardware.
We invested a huge amount of time and money to develop a new system-on-a-chip called BMC, which stands for Behavior Modeling Core. Proprietary to Roland, BMC contains a large array of DSP and CPU core blocks plus hardware logic; it is incredibly powerful.
ZEN-Core is an expandable and customizable synthesizer engine running on BMC, and is the heart of the new JUPITER, FANTOM, and GROOVEBOX synth instruments. The combination of BMC and ZEN-Core are like a highly tuned F1 racing engine for sound synthesis.
At the base level, ZEN-Core integrates next-generation PCM and Virtual Analog, with advanced features such as new Virtual Analog oscillators, precisely modeled filters, ultra-fast and smooth envelopes and LFOs, high-resolution parameters, and expandability. The JUPITER-X Series uses one of the first product-specific expansions to the base engine, Analog Behavior Modeling or ABM, which is the technology behind the Model Bank feature. For your interest, the second product-specific expansion to ZEN-Core is V-Piano on the new FANTOM synths.
Here’s where we get into some Roland logic. Roland has two technologies now, one called Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) and another is now called Analog Behavior Modeling (ABM). The name ABM is newer, but the actual tech for ABM appears to be older. But there’s a hedge here – ACB does more to actually emulate the way physical circuits behave. This isn’t only significant to remakes; it can also be employed in new instruments, as was done on the SYSTEM-1 and SYSTEM-8. And it brings Roland’s sound engines beneath the hood closer in line with recent developments in modeling filters and other features now found in current-generation desktop software instruments, software modular, and even some digital hardware modules.
Roland seems to have backpedaled on their more computationally expensive and innovative ACB, and the superior sound of the Boutique and AIRA products, and gone back to just cramming gear with a bunch of PCM and previous generation virtual analog.
Now to be fair, they reveal why – customers want more polyphony and more features. And sure enough, the response to the new FANTOM synths has been positive.
I can’t really argue with what the market wants – though it also sort of proves the point that you should tune out some of what you see on forums.
Still, it’ll be disappointing if Roland is abandoning some of what has powered some of their best hardware of the last couple of generations. And it’s doubly disappointing when that gear is being unfairly knocked for using digital technology.
Look, there is nothing wrong with employing PCM or repurposing old tech. And to look to another Japanese model, Nintendo has done amazing work by chasing real functionality for customers rather than spec sheets. The problem is if that becomes a stand-in for fresh design, because then usability can suffer.
Instruments in the AIRA line – including the SYSTEM-1 and SYSTEM-8 – were driven around new sound engines and hardware workflows built around those sound engines.
I really want to like the GROOVEBOX – I’m finishing my review of the MC-101 now, and it shows some potential. But part of why it’s taking me so long is that this product has some disappointing limitations and confusing workflow elements that are side effects of this recycled approach. (As some veteran Roland sound designers noted, the MC-101 even has banks of sounds from the FANTOM line.) And it means we won’t get what might have been the perfect new Roland gear, incorporating both the models of the TR-808 in the TR-8S and the new sequencing, clip launching, and time stretch/repitch features. Or, for that matter, imagine if the GROOVEBOX line had the ability to load longer samples, or to stream from SD card, or to load samples from the computer, as almost all of its competitors can. Or imagine if there were a working desktop or browser editor (think what Novation did with the much cheaper Circuit). Or, to get greedy, what if there were an ACB-powered synth engine in a GROOVEBOX? That would be a must-buy.
From my perspective, there’s way too much in the new FANTOM and GROOVEBOX products that comes straight out of Roland gear from 10 years ago or even further back. (It’s terrifyingly easy to compare the new grooveboxes to ones from before the turn of the century.)
Roland may not be chasing ghosts, but they run the risk of repackaging them. And the industry isn’t standing still – that could put them at a disadvantage to other gear makers embracing a more futuristic approach.
So yeah, don’t be afraid of clones. But, Roland, some of us are really rooting for you to protect innovation and innovative teams in the company.
