March 1, 1924... remembering Donald “Deke” Slayton Would be 100th birthday for USAF pilot/astronaut Donald "Deke Slayton, selected a NASA astronaut in 1959, USAF Captain Donald Slayton became one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. However centrifuge training electrocardiodiagrams pointed out he had a heart condition, so he became chief of the astronaut office, deciding on crew planning for the Gemini and Apollo programs. In March 1972, NASA announced that Slayton had returned to flight status and in this way he became DMP - Docking Module Pilot for the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975. Wristwatch-wise, Donald Slayton wore a lot of watches (Accutron, Breitling, Bulova, Omega,...)  and he was the first of the NASA astronauts to be spotted wearing an Omega Speedmaster CK2998-4 in December 1962. By June 1963, three NASA astronauts (Donald Slayton, Walter Schirra & Leroy Cooper) had a personal Speedmaster CK2298. Although bezelless since June 1963, Slayton kept wearing his Speedmaster CK2298 untill June 1965. Note in this 1991 portrait, Donald Slayton wore his Gold "Apollo 11" tribute Omega Speedmaster BA 145.022-69 n° 27 chronograph on yellow Gold bracelet awarded in November 1969. "I needed another stopwatch" he says, while also wearing an IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun. A big baboon, Jeremy Clarkson plays the part very well. Of course, what he's figured out is he needs either a double chronograph or a flyback one, both of which his IWC Top Gun isn't.

can i just say that I'm haunted by the image of Ice wearing "one of Mavericks cheapest rolexes". One because of the mental immage of Maverick being the kind of men who not only owns multiple watches but also Rolex, which is absolutely delightful, because oh the quiet vanity of that. And two because of the implied and groundbreaking (to me) domesticity (and defiance of the not talking/acknowledging the thing between the 2 of them) of wearing another person watch. I'm screaming into the void about your brilliance. So I need to ask, do they do that on purpose (before the mission) in a sort if roundabout way of acknowledging each other presence in their life? What would Mav wear that belongs to Ice (apart from that USNA ring eheh)?
pilots/sailors/doctors etc who do high-level specialized work with their hands tend to really be Watch Guys. and “cheap” rolexes (sub $7k ish) are actually pretty affordable if you’re making >$150k a year and want to treat yourself every fifth christmas or something. source: know several sailors & doctors. ALSO the watch ice is wearing in his famous gay plane photoshoot is actually a rolex. So theres some evidence ice at least is (annoying, ostentatious, bad with money, and) a Watch Guy. Maverick’s also wearing a kickass chronograph in TGM so i think he’s also probably a Watch Guy. also… you know, status symbol, honor, et cetera et cetera…
they probably wear each other’s socks because in-regs socks all look the same and they’re both men so who cares. i also hc that they’ve always worn the same size in shirts so each other’s t-shirts are also free game. and was very confusing at the start of their relationship when trying to figure out whose shirt was whose after a midnight rendezvous. lots of accidental shirt mixups. and, yeah, each other’s watches, because most people only see the status and don’t see the detail, and most people aren’t around both ice and mav enough to recognize that “omg last month adm kazansky was wearing the same omega chronometer capt mitchell is wearing today!! theyre totally together!!!” so if ice buys a new watch and maverick salivates over it, sure he can borrow it, whatever. and i think there’s a scene in wwgattai when maverick wears ice’s pj pants hold up lemme find it
Tumblr media
“in bare feet.” now wtf does that mean. that could use a rewrite.
ice also wears mavericks leather jacket when they’re on their baseball date in debriefing. at some point when you live with someone long enough your stuff becomes their stuff which was the point of this graf
Tumblr media
thinking about it… trying to decide if they’d wear each other’s cologne. that seems like a little much. no i don’t think so.

🛩️ Back in the 1950s, as the United States Air Force sought precision timekeeping, Blancpain answered the call, inspired by its success with the iconic Fifty Fathoms diver's watch.
🇨🇭 Founded in 1735 by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain in Switzerland, Blancpain SA has been synonymous with luxury watchmaking excellence for centuries. Nowadays Blancpain is the oldest registered watch brand in the world.
⌚️ These specialized chronographs, offered to American military pilots through the esteemed distributor Allen V. Tornek, represent a rare and coveted piece of horological history. With only a limited number of prototypes believed to have been produced, the Air Command chronograph is a true collector's dream.

55 years ago… Frank Borman visited USSR 1969, July 9, NASA astronaut Frank Borman, Gemini VII and Apollo 8, returned from a 9 days long visit to the USSR. Part of the visit was a coordination as the Russians planned to land the unmanned "Luna 15" in the same period as the manned Apollo 11 was in lunar orbit. Borman with fellow cosmonauts, visited the tomb of the unknown soldier and the Kremlin wall grave of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. For the Apollo 11 mission, Borman acted as direct liaison with President Nixon and accompanied the President to the recovery ship USS Hornet to meet the Apollo 11 astronauts upon return on July 24, 1969. In 1970 Colonel USAF Frank Borman retired from NASA and the military to pursue a business career in civil aviation. Note in this 1983 photo, Borman wore an Omega Speedmaster on a steel Rolex oyster bracelet. (Photo: AP/NASA)

5 Patek Philippe Watches One Must Add To His Collection
Tumblr media
Patek Philippe is one of the most reputed luxury Swiss watch manufacturers worldwide, leading the market since it first stepped foot in the industry in 1839. So, it’s no surprise that the brand has created numerous significant models throughout its history. The watches are instantly recognisable and demarcated with their prominent features and functionalities.
However, asking a Patek Philippe fanatic to name their top references is like asking you to choose your favourite finger, which, apart from being disgusting, is a fundamentally unfair question. Since every Patek timepiece has qualities that deserve to be loved, here are our top Patek preferences that we believe every collector must own!
5 best Patek Philippe watches your collection should have
1. The Nautilus Travel Time Ref. 5990/1A-001
Let’s cut the ribbon with this gorgeous Patek creation coming with Ref. 5990/1A-001. This is the Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph, considered one of the first to bring the chronograph functions to wristwatches. After Patek released the watch in 2014, it has forever been in the spotlight for its striking resemblance to the Nautilus pattern. It has a 40mm stainless steel case, a black gradient dial with date, chronograph, GMT, hours, seconds, and minutes functionalities, and a stainless steel bracelet. The Ref. 5990/1A-001 can display two time zones simultaneously and upholds Patek’s ingenious watchmaking style.
2. Aquanaut Ref. 5168G-010
Technically a larger version of the original Aquanaut, the Ref. 5168G-010 with a 42.2mm case is a real attention grabber. The khaki green dial looks stunning with the luminous hour markers and hands that give it a sporty yet classy outlook. Coupled with that is the matching green rubber strap that sits comfortably on the wrists. All these features make it a watch you shouldn’t avoid any time in the future. Many refer to the dial colour as ‘olive’, and the unusual colours help this watch attract a high value when you sell your Patek Philippe in the secondary market.
3. Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 5524R-001
A more recent variant is the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 5524R-001, which came out in 2015, and people considered it far ahead of its time. Since its debut, the watch has become one of Patek’s most sought-after models, driving a high resale value in the pre-owned market. If you’re looking for an investment, this Calatrava will surely hook a good price when you sell your Patek Philippe. The pilot’s watch has an elegant rose gold finish opposite a warm brown dial featuring bold and big Arabic numerals and a sub-dial at 6 o’clock. Also, stitching the look together is the brown calfskin strap. This watch is the perfect combination of accuracy and class.

4. Nautilus Ref. 5711/1A
Getting yourself one of these Patek timepieces is an achievement in itself. Soon after Patek dropped the Nautilus 5711/1A in 2011, the watch became a sensation in the watch industry. Today, it is one of the world's most coveted steel sports watches with a long waiting queue, 10 years to be precise! The model has a 42mm stainless steel octagonal case, elegant curves and a nice blue dial with stick indices. The Ref. 5711/1A incorporates greater water resistance, comfort, and corrosion resistance, commanding a significant value in the market. Moreover, after its discontinuation in 2021, the demand for this Patek increased tenfold.
5. Annual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5905P
Making its debut in 2015, the Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5905P is a stunning luxury timepiece with a 60-minute chronograph, a day/night indicator, and an annual calendar. The watch boasts a luxurious 42mm platinum case and is available in black, green, and blue dial options. Adding to this, the chronograph pushers and the curved bezel enhance the overall design. The chronograph has always been a prominent feature in Patek’s wide range of complications, and the Ref. 5905P is amongst the most admired by collectors.
CONCLUSION
The watchmakers at Patek Philippe have always tried to set the records straight with their extraordinary designs and notable complications. While not all of their watches are financial successes, the ones included in our list will surely get you a good value when you sell your Patek Philippe watch in the pre-owned market.
If you’re a beginner, we suggest you inaugurate your collection with any of the above Patek timepieces, worthy of all praise!

Breitling’s New US-Exclusive Navitimer Is Limited to 300 Pieces
The wristwatch was introduced in 1952.
New York—Breitling has released a redux of one of its most classic timepieces.
Earlier this month, the watchmaker unveiled the Navitimer B01 Chronograph 46 U.S. Limited Edition.
Willy Breitling developed the first Navitimer—a play on “navigation timer”—in 1952. Its claim to fame was its circular slide rule designed for pilots to perform flight calculations.
In 1954, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association adopted the Navitimer as its office timepiece, putting its logo at the 12 o’clock position.
In the seven decades since, there have been many versions of the Navitimer, but Breitling said the latest edition features the original’s most important features, like the circular slide rule, three chronograph counters, baton indexes, and notched bezel for grip.
To refine these classic elements, the new Navitimer boasts a slimmer profile thanks to the leveled slide rule and domed glass atop the dial.
This redux of the classic pilot’s watch features the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 movement, a COSC-certified chronometer with 70 hours of power reserve. The watch is water resistant up to 30 meters.
Powered by the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, the movement’s oscillating weight is also slimmer and can be viewed through the open caseback.
The movement allows the wearer to change the date at any time. The date is displayed in a window at the 6 o’clock subdial.
Hearkening back to the original Navitimer, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s winged logo is returned to the 12 o’clock position.
The anthracite dial with black sub-dial is housed in a 46 mm stainless steel and 18-karat red gold case.
The watch features a black alligator leather strap with a folding clasp.
There are only 300 B01 Chronograph 46 U.S. Limited Edition watches available.
They are exclusive to Breitling boutiques and authorized retailers in the United States, and are sold on Breitling.com.
