Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018)
Tumblr media
Watching Agatha and the Truth of Murder you’d never guess that 1) it debuted on TV and 2) was not endorsed by Agatha Christie’s estate. This works as a great companion piece to the author’s famous works or as a keep-you-guessing mystery on its own.
In 1926, crime writer Agatha Christie (Ruth Bradley) disappeared for 11 days. This film imagines she vanished in order to help solve a real-life murder. Mabel Rogers (Pippa HaywoodPippa Haywood) approaches Agatha. Her partner, Florence Nightingale Shore (Stacha Hicks), was bludgeoned on a train and later passed from the injuries. Under a pseudonym and false pretences, Agatha and Mabel lure the primary suspects to a remote location where they hope to prove the murderer was either Daphne Miller (Bebe Cave), whose nursing career would’ve been ruined by Florence, Randolph (Tim McInnerny), the cousin who inherited Florence’s money, Zaki Hanachi (Luke Pierre ), a soldier treated by Florence shortly before her death, Travis Pickford (Blake Harrison), the police’s prime suspect or Mrs. Pamela Rose (Samantha Spiro), the only person who knew where Florence was sitting.
Right away, the film endears you to Agatha. Her husband is having an affair and readers are calling her writing predictable. She’s a woman in a man’s world, and suffers from writer’s block. You want her to succeed, even more when you hear the details surrounding Florence’s murder. Solving the case might even be what she needs to reinvigorate her creativity. Unfortunately, she’s not a real detective; she merely writes about them. You have a feeling she’s got what it takes to crack this mystery but it’s going to be tough. As we’re reminded multiple time, this is not a “fictional case”. In a novel, you want to keep the audiences guessing by making the culprit the least likely suspect. In “real life”, the principle of Occam’s Razor usually applies, which means the murderer is most likely…
BAM! Crash! Gasp!
Just when you thought you had it figured out, Agatha and the Truth of Murder throws a wrench in the equation and piles suspense upon suspense. Now, we have to worry about Agatha’s true identity being revealed by Detective Inspector Dicks (Ralph Ineson) before the crime is solved. It’d be bad, but another incident tells us Agatha’s life may be in jeopardy too. It keeps the momentum going and gets you so wrapped up in this new business you no longer have the brainpower to figure out both what’s happening right now and the case we came here to see. Even if you do, we all know part of the fun of this kind of story is figuring out not only who, but how and why before seeing justice dispensed.
The eclectic array of characters to interrogate and cross off the list are enjoyable to see. Ruth Bradley is charismatic. You wouldn’t mind seeing her again in another similar movie as long as it’s as smart as this one. By subverting your expectations but also keeping in mind what we love about Agatha Christie’s stories, you get the best of both worlds. A little bit of Ralph Ineson goes a long way too.
While the story is set in the early 20th Century, many aspects of Agatha and the Truth of Murder are modern. The cast is enjoyable and the premise appealing, particularly if you're a fan of Agatha Christie. While the film may not blow your socks off, that’s its only flaw. (September 4, 2020)

Pippa Movie 2023 Review: A Gripping and Inspiring War Drama
I hope you have enjoyed and appreciated this article, and I hope you have learned and felt something from this article. I also hope you have watched and liked the movie Pippa 2023, and I hope you have celebrated and respected the movie Pippa 2023.
Pippa 2023 is a movie that has generated a lot of buzz and anticipation among the Indian audience. It is a war drama that tells the true story of Captain Balram Singh Mehta, who led his tank squadron in the Battle of Garibpur during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war. See How They Run (2022, dir. Tom George) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
See How They Run was an incredibly fun whodunit, a genre for which I am a sucker for, so I'll admit up top my bias here. The film follows the investigation of the murder of Leo Köpernick (played by Adrien Brody), an American film director who is in London with the creative crew behind an upcoming film adaptation of Agatha Christie's stage play The Mousetrap, which has just celebrated its 100th show in London's West End. The cast of characters, which includes people both real and fictional played by the likes of David Oyelowo, Harris Dickinson, Ruth Wilson, and many more, are all very colorful and eccentric and provide a lot of the movie's very charming humor. The investigation is being led, not by the world-weary, no-nonsense detective of whodunits' past, but the mildly flippant, somewhat lazy Inspector Stoppard, played almost listlessly deadpan by the brilliant Sam Rockwell. Stoppard acts so underwhelmed by the world around him that at a certain point you wonder if he truly cares if this case gets solved at all.
While Rockwell is an absolute gem and deserves heaps of praise, the true star of this particular show is the plucky, pitifully green Constable Stalker, who is played here by Saoirse Ronan with the comedic wherewithal of a master of their craft, and a performance that can be put up there with any of the greats. The mystery is gripping; I, of course, won't go into any details because I do recommend going to see this one, but I was impressed with the reveal and thought the entire tongue-in-cheek vibe the movie throws out played very well. There is a lot of meta humor and jokes surrounding real life things about The Mousetrap that, were someone to go into the movie knowing, would make it very fun. Sadly, I didn't so a lot of that was lost on me until afterwards when I was reading up on it, but the film was still incredibly enjoyable and a huge crowd-pleaser. I think there's something for everyone to enjoy here, especially for those that love a good whodunit.
Score: 8/10

Why I stopped reading Grimrose Girls
Tumblr media
Grimrose Girls was a book in my TBR pile I was hugely looking forward to but had to stop reading because of some of the choices the author made, which I found hugely disappointing (and possibly very problematic). Those of you who know me will know this isn’t something I usually do, and often even if I don’t like a book I’ll force myself to finish it.
I couldn’t do that with this one and I’d like to tell you why.
After the mysterious death of their best friend, Ella, Yuki, and Rory are the talk of their elite school, Grimrose Académie. The police ruled it a suicide, but the trio are determined to find out what really happened. When Nani Eszes arrives as their newest roommate, it sets into motion a series of events they couldn't have imagined. As the girls retrace their friend's last steps, they uncover dark secrets about themselves and their destinies, discovering they're all cursed to repeat the brutal and gruesome endings to their stories until they can break the cycle. This contemporary take on classic fairytales reimagines heroines as friends attending the same school. While investigating the murder of their best friend, they uncover connections to their ancient fairytale curses and attempt to forge their own fate before it's too late.
This book made a lot of promises and I was frankly super looking forward to it. So I make it about a quarter through the book and get to the reveal about the fairy tale characters and I realize something neat. The character’s names hint at their nature. "Ella" "Ash"worth is Cinderella. Yuki's name means Snow. The "Shiro" part of her surname may mean white. Rory's surname means Briar. Edric's name was likely chosen due to is proximity to Eric from the Disney movie, likewise Pippa and Phillip. Nani means "Beauty" and her surname means "Clever". What fun, I originally thought. The author obviously put a lot of thought into the names!
So then I got to Svenja, the only transwoman in the book. Svenja's name means "boy" "young man" or "swan".

A Bit of Light Review: A Commendable Cinematic Experience
Tumblr media
A Bit of Light is a cinematic tapestry woven from the threads of human fragility, redemption, and the complex dynamics of familial ties. Directed by Stephen Moyer and penned by Rebecca Callard, whose stage play of the same name serves as the foundation, the film explores the gritty reality of life’s challenges through the lens of its protagonist, Ella, portrayed with visceral vulnerability by Anna Paquin. This narrative is not for the faint-hearted, but rather, for those who appreciate cinema that delves into the essence of what it means to be profoundly human. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6I_zfwvk_w The story unfolds with Ella, a character almost hitting the fourth decade of her life, finding herself in the throes of upheaval. Her journey of battling sobriety leads her to relinquish temporary custody of her daughters to her ex-husband, Joseph (Youssef Kerkour), and his new partner, Bethan (Pippa Bennett-Warner). The desperation of her situation compels her to move back with her father, Alan (Ray Winstone), marking the beginning of an emotional odyssey into the past, present, and murky waters of interpersonal relationships. The Good: The casting is a stroke of brilliance, with each actor bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. Anna Paquin shines as Ella, encapsulating the torturous journey of a woman grappling with the demons of addiction, the anguish of motherhood lost, and the relentless pursuit of redemption. Ray Winstone, as Alan, delivers a stellar performance that oscillates between the hard exterior of a disillusioned father and the soft underbelly of paternal love. Youssef Kerkour and Pippa Bennett-Warner complement this ensemble with their nuanced portrayals. They offer a glimpse into the complexities of moving on and forging new relationships amidst the remnants of the old. A Bit of Light doesn’t shy away from the mundanities of everyday life, choosing to shine a light on them. Moyer’s direction employs a restrained palette, grounding the film in realism that is both stark and subtly beautiful. The cinematography is commendable, capturing the intimacy of spaces and the stifling atmosphere of a local pub. These settings become characters in their own right, mirroring the internal landscapes of the protagonists. The Bad: However, the film is not without its shortcomings. At times, the narrative pace meanders, getting lost in its contemplation. The film's character exploration sometimes slows down the story. There are moments when the dialogue, striving for authenticity, lapses into mundanity. It lacks the poetic punch or insight that such a dense emotional landscape warrants. The movie tries to tie up its threads, but some plot points feel rushed, leaving viewers wanting more. The film explores redemption in dark circumstances. Ella's journey reflects resilience, self-confrontation, and second chances. This thematic exploration resonates deeply, echoing long after the credits roll. The relationship dynamics presented in the film, particularly between Ella and Alan, are crafted with care. They weave a tapestry of past grievances, unspoken love, and the arduous journey towards mutual understanding. Stellar performances enrich the interplay between characters, adding layers to the narrative. The score and soundtrack of the film deserve a mention, perfectly accentuating the emotional landscape without overwhelming it. The choice of music is both poignant and evocative, enhancing key moments and elevating the overall experience. Overall: A Bit of Light is a commendable cinematic piece. It bravely tackles themes of addiction, familial bonds, and the quest for redemption. Its strengths lie in its performances, character development, and thematic depth. However, its pacing issues and occasional lapses into narrative and dialogue mundanities prevent it from reaching its full potential. This film is a decent watch for those who enjoy human-centric stories with depth. Read the full article

PIPPA
The movie is based on the life of Captain Balram Singh Mehta, who served in the Indian 45 Cavalry Regiment during the 1971 India-Pakistan War and fought on the eastern front alongside his siblings. Pippa is based on actual events that took place in 1971 during the Battle of Garibpur.
In the Mehta household, where war hero Ram and his younger brother Balram fight through emotional struggles as they get ready for the Eastern front, the screenplay strikes a balance between family drama. The film is set in three distinct sectors: intelligence, undercover operations, and tank warfare. Menon is a master at capturing the camaraderie and dynamics of soldiers on the battlefield.

Pippa Movie Review: The Good, the Bad, and the Unique - Viewer Beware!
Tumblr media
Pippa is an excellent movie that tells the story of the 1971 Indo-Pak war in a unique way. It gives us a different view of the battlefield and the lives of the people during that time. The characters are portrayed with great care, like a skilled chef creating a special dish, paying attention to every detail. Pippa Trailer Release on Ishaan Khatter Birthday: A Special Celebration Pippa Screening: Mira Rajput Joins Brother-in-law Ishaan Khatter in Style Proud Military Enthusiast: As someone who loves military movies, Pippa really connected with me. The way it showed the first-generation Amphibian battle tanks and how they were adapted for swamps and rivers was very detailed and accurate. What I liked most was that it didn't have the usual Bollywood hype, but instead, it found a good balance with the actors' efforts, the script, how it was shot, the research, and the direction. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CzGKmsxSLHx/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== The Good and the Not-So-Good: Viewer's Take Pros: Learning about things not many know, like India's first amphibious army tanks. Great acting by Priyanshu Painyuli, Innamulhaq, Soham Majumdar, and Chandrachoor Rai. Post-credit scenes that teach us about historical events, like the Garibpur action. Cons: Some actors, like Ishan Khatter and Soni Razdan, didn't fit well into their roles. The way the story was told wasn't as engaging as other war movies like 'URI.' Extra story bits and songs that might distract from the main story. Directorial Brilliance and the Mehta Family Saga: Pippa, despite its flaws, shines in several areas. The realistic battle scenes, especially those involving PT-76 Tanks, are well choreographed and shot, providing a gripping cinematic experience. Tanmay and his team's adaptation of Brigadier Balram Mehta's book, "The Burning Chaffees," is commendable. Ishaan Khatter's portrayal of Capt Mehta captures the essence of the 1971 War, and the entire cast deserves kudos for their efforts. A Unique War Story: Raja Krishna Menon took a different route with Pippa, choosing to focus more on family dynamics than the typical war movie approach. By diving into the Mehta family's personal tales, the film sparks discussions on whether this creative choice does justice to the heroic story it intends to share. Technical Issues and Looks: Unfortunately, technical problems like poor visuals and incomplete action scenes hold back the film's impact. Despite maintaining a good pace, the not-so-great appearance on streaming platforms might leave viewers wanting a more visually satisfying experience. Honoring Values and Bravery: Even with its technical hiccups, Pippa stands tall as a tribute to human values, sacrifice, and India's bravery. The director's commitment to showcasing the 1971 battle against Pakistan and the birth of Bangladesh deserves applause. A R Rahman's music adds a soulful and authentic touch to the film's melody. Final Thoughts: In the end, Pippa is a movie that splits opinions. It might not please everyone, but its different way of looking at war, along with great performances, makes it a movie you should check out. Whether you connect with its unique style or find fault in its departure from typical war stories, Pippa adds something interesting to the world of movies. The way the movie ends makes you think. It might sit well with fans of typical movies, but there's a lingering sense that it didn't quite meet expectations. Maybe I expected too much from this cinematic journey.
