Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018)

Watching Agatha and the Truth of Murder you’d never guess that 1) it debuted on TV and 2) was not endorsed by Agatha Christie’s estate. This works as a great companion piece to the author’s famous works or as a keep-you-guessing mystery on its own.

In 1926, crime writer Agatha Christie (Ruth Bradley) disappeared for 11 days. This film imagines she vanished in order to help solve a real-life murder. Mabel Rogers (Pippa HaywoodPippa Haywood) approaches Agatha. Her partner, Florence Nightingale Shore (Stacha Hicks), was bludgeoned on a train and later passed from the injuries. Under a pseudonym and false pretences, Agatha and Mabel lure the primary suspects to a remote location where they hope to prove the murderer was either Daphne Miller (Bebe Cave), whose nursing career would’ve been ruined by Florence, Randolph (Tim McInnerny), the cousin who inherited Florence’s money, Zaki Hanachi (Luke Pierre ), a soldier treated by Florence shortly before her death, Travis Pickford (Blake Harrison), the police’s prime suspect or Mrs. Pamela Rose (Samantha Spiro), the only person who knew where Florence was sitting.

Right away, the film endears you to Agatha. Her husband is having an affair and readers are calling her writing predictable. She’s a woman in a man’s world, and suffers from writer’s block. You want her to succeed, even more when you hear the details surrounding Florence’s murder. Solving the case might even be what she needs to reinvigorate her creativity. Unfortunately, she’s not a real detective; she merely writes about them. You have a feeling she’s got what it takes to crack this mystery but it’s going to be tough. As we’re reminded multiple time, this is not a “fictional case”. In a novel, you want to keep the audiences guessing by making the culprit the least likely suspect. In “real life”, the principle of Occam’s Razor usually applies, which means the murderer is most likely…

BAM! Crash! Gasp!

Just when you thought you had it figured out, Agatha and the Truth of Murder throws a wrench in the equation and piles suspense upon suspense. Now, we have to worry about Agatha’s true identity being revealed by Detective Inspector Dicks (Ralph Ineson) before the crime is solved. It’d be bad, but another incident tells us Agatha’s life may be in jeopardy too. It keeps the momentum going and gets you so wrapped up in this new business you no longer have the brainpower to figure out both what’s happening right now and the case we came here to see. Even if you do, we all know part of the fun of this kind of story is figuring out not only who, but how and why before seeing justice dispensed.

The eclectic array of characters to interrogate and cross off the list are enjoyable to see. Ruth Bradley is charismatic. You wouldn’t mind seeing her again in another similar movie as long as it’s as smart as this one. By subverting your expectations but also keeping in mind what we love about Agatha Christie’s stories, you get the best of both worlds. A little bit of Ralph Ineson goes a long way too.

While the story is set in the early 20th Century, many aspects of Agatha and the Truth of Murder are modern. The cast is enjoyable and the premise appealing, particularly if you're a fan of Agatha Christie. While the film may not blow your socks off, that’s its only flaw. (September 4, 2020)

I decided not to create fan art or post about Good Omens (Tv Show) anymore.

This fandom was a great support for a long time for me and the book is still one of my favourites from the time I started reading compulsively everything from Sir Terry Pratchett, but I'm so pissed with the fandom right now.

The fact that the recent allegations against Neil Gaiman (I was a big fan of his work until I discovered that like every white cismen of his era with a bit of fame he is a piece of shit and think he can do what he wants to women) was barely covered is a thing and yes, it's pissing me off too.

But the fact that so many people in the fandom try to find excuses or justification for his action and don't participate to spread the information or just say nothing about it thinking you can be "neutral" is pissing me way more.

I don't judge people who want to separate his work from him or those who consider that a fandom, at the end, is more the propriety of the fans than the artist, I'm totally agreeing with the last one and I think they are ways to consume the work of problematic authors without giving them platform and money if you really cannot do without it.

BUT, and my big point is here, the issue I have with GO fandom right now it's that a big fandom like this has the possibility to spread the information and awareness pretty easily and right now people continue to post their fan art or fanfic without any infos about the allegations like nothing happened, that's bad! And don't start me with those who are more focused on if the last season will be released or not. It shouldn't be, not with him as screenwriter and executive producer at least and with a lot of money sent to SA associations and transparency about the situation.

It's giving him the possibility to keep the whole thing discret and make people forget about it. It's giving him the opportunity to have kind of a come back at some point, even a small discret one, and give him access to more women in the future who might not know what he did and what kind of man he is.

I don't say that people need to speak about it on every post, but at least, please :

- stop tagging Neil Gaiman in your fandom works (Good Omens, Sandman, ...fan art, fanfiction).

- stop posting, blazing, or reposting quotes from him, or giving him a platform by showing off his work.

- don't buy first hand or loan at the library his books or comics. Why the local library too ? When more people ask for a book at the library, they buy more copies, and in most of the countries, writers receive something when people loan ebooks at the library, even physical books sometimes.

If you really cannot live without merch products from your favourite fandom, then by all means buy those who are not licenced on etsy or other platforms by small artists. I usually don't recommend that, though I prefer not to buy merch at all if the original creator of the license can not be rewarded, and here it's a bad thing if he is.

- and speak about it. If you post fanfiction, post a disclaimer about the allegation at some point on every fanctiction you post, adding at least the two links of the two principles podcasts. Same when you post fanart on whatever platform it is.

Random Shameless headcanons I have for characters other than Ian and Mickey post-finale….

Fiona comes back to Chicago when Frank dies. She’s dreading it. Even though she misses her family like crazy, it’s hard coming back. She gets to the airport and nearly turns back around. She’s anxious the whole flight. But when she sees her siblings waiting for her at arrivals, she breaks down in tears. There’s a big family hug. She doesn’t stay for long but she’s glad she came. From then on, she returns often.

Debbie and Carl end up running the Alibi with Tipping. Debbie hosts an LGBTQ+ quiz night once a month and meets the love of her life at one of these nights. Carl may or may not end up having a bisexual awakening at a different one of these nights. Carl and Debbie work on a whole menu of cocktails that they name after their family and friends. They bicker a bit but they don’t fight. They find they actually work well together.

Svetlana has a comfortable life. She’s single for a long while, just focused on raising Yev. She works at a run-down Eastern European restaurant as a waitress and very quickly works her way up to manager. She turns the place around and one day is able to apply for a loan and buy the place. Now she spends her days running a tight ship - a well reviewed restaurant with a perfect health score - and some of her nights sipping an ice cold vodka at the bar, impeccably dressed. There may or may not be a beautiful, rich widow who woos her….

(Don’t hate me for this one) Lip and Tami end up moving to Milwaukee where they have another baby. It’s ok for awhile but then they break up. They move back to Chicago and co-parent well together even though the breakup is bad. They try dating other people casually. But they eventually fall back in love. It takes time and a lot of trying but they get there in the end. It’s very messy. But isn’t life?

Lip ends up staying with Ian and Mickey for awhile after the break up. Although they’re family and they love each other, it feels like forever for everyone.

Despite Tami and Lip breaking up, everyone treats Tami as family and nobody cuts her out of things or sides with Lip over her. Everyone is neutral and supportive. Lip is kinda amazed at everyone’s maturity. It makes him realise how much they’ve all grown up.

Liam is a straight A student. He does incredibly well in school. He has a lot of ambition and dreams. He wants to be a defence lawyer and do as much pro bono work as he can, he wants to be a doctor and work at a free clinic, he wants to get involved with politics and help speak for those who can’t. There’s a lot he wants to do, so he starts by doing a lot of volunteering at different organisations. Because of this his applications to college are amazing. He may or may not get his siblings into volunteering too.

Debbie gets a ‘franny’ tattoo on the top of her arm near her shoulder. It’s done from Franny writing her own name. It’s both very sweet and very cool.

Mandy comes back to Chicago after a bad breakup. She’s determined to build a good life. She misses Ian and Mickey but can’t find the strength to get in contact. She knows Terry is dead. So, she has a good job, a nice apartment. Everything’s going well and then she runs into Debbie. And…it’s nice. It’s nice to see Debbie happy and healthy and with a sweet kid. Debbie encourages Mandy to get in contact with Ian and Mickey but says she’ll keep her secret if she doesn’t want to.

She doesn’t have to. Mandy gets their address off Debbie and turns up at their apartment. It’s a lot emotionally. They have a long catch up session with alcohol, some very, very good weed (better than they ever had as teenagers) and takeout. There’s laughter and tears - mostly from Ian and Mandy but also from Mickey. Yes. They saw those tears. Stop lying. She stays close with them and Debbie.

Franny and Fred and Lip and Tami’s second kid have so much fun growing up together. They have sleepovers and days out and are close like siblings. They’re close to all the older Gallaghers but they idolise Liam and he’s their favourite. He teaches them fun facts and helps them with their homework.

Kev and Vee occasionally return to Chicago with the girls, they are doing well and they rent a big house on a lake and invite the Gallaghers. It becomes a tradition once a year. Usually Fourth of July so they can watch other people’s fireworks, get drunk and party. The kids have a great time swimming and exploring. The adults enjoy Ian and Mickey’s premium weed. There may or may not be midnight swimming and very drunken Marco Polo games.

Vee and Fiona meet up for a girls weekend once a year where they find a hotel with a spa and a bar. They end up inviting Debbie and Tami after a while. Lip jokes there should be a boys weekend but he can’t be bothered to organise it.

• As Marty ventures into the Café 80s, a lot of what unfolds is pretty close to the movie, so not much to say there. There is an interesting line as Griff and Biff exit the café, though, where Biff says, “Listen, Griff, don’t you go loanin’ that McFly kid any money—even though he probably needs it, him and his old man both.”

I wonder: is he saying that just because he wants to take a dig at the state of the McFly family’s finances or because Griff has loaned money to Junior before? If he has, that’s quite the interesting thing to ponder considering I don’t see Griff as being the type to do much of anything out of the kindness of his heart, but I absolutely do see him loaning money to Junior just to be able to use it against him and force him into doing things.

• If I’m remembering correctly, Junior doesn’t actually say no to Griff in the café. He mentions it being dangerous, says he should discuss it with his father, and then eventually says okay once he’s thrown over the counter. Book Junior does say no, though, and he says it like this:

You know that’s Marty’s boy; he’s got nice manners just like his dad. I love Junior so much.

• When Marty gets approached in 2015 about saving the clock tower, the book notes that the guy asking for the donation is Terry. When Marty won’t donate the hundred dollars, Terry goes on to talk about how, back when the clock was struck by lightning, “—a hundred bucks was worth something.” He then points to Biff (who is across the street) and starts to talk about how Biff, “—tried to shaft me out of three-hundred bucks for fixing his car.”

I kind of wish they had included this context in the movie because it was only a handful of years ago that I realized the guy asking for the donation is Terry the mechanic from 1955. And while that information isn’t important, it would have saved me a good deal of confusion in those hundred or so watches growing up when I had no clue who he was. And the thing is, I could see the obvious old-age makeup, so I knew he was supposed to be someone, but I didn’t know who until I read it online after starting this blog. Before that, I was always like, “Why did they go through the trouble of badly doing old age makeup on this random guy for this one scene? Why didn’t they just hire an old man?”

• The discussion about the Cubs between Marty and Terry just reminded me of the unnecessarily long Dudes Talking Sports conversation between Marty and Doc in the novel for the first movie.

•The book makes it very clear that Marty’s motivation for buying the sports almanac is due to his anxiety over finding out his future self is a “loser.” Like…there is no other reasoning—not even the general lure of wealth—noticeably at play here. Marty just desperately wants to avoid being described as someone who “flushed his life down the toilet” and he sees the almanac as his guaranteed way to prevent that fate.

Why wasn’t this included in the movie?? All my times watching it, and I’ve NEVER gotten the sense that buying the almanac is the result of Marty being afraid of what he learned in the café. It always just seemed like Marty was simply being impulsive, irresponsible, and greedy. And frankly, it also has always struck me as a little out of character for him. He’s impulsive, yes, but good-hearted, honest, Marty McFly wanting to cheat at gambling for fun? Never seemed quite in line with who he is.

The way the book frames it changes it so much though! It’s so much easier to be sympathetic toward Marty buying the almanac with the context that he’s doing it to save himself and his family. Kind of flabbergasted, honestly. This would have been a great detail to have in the movie. Imagine seeing the excited grin and the “I can’t lose!” and him telling Doc with a mischievous grin, “Maybe we can place a couple bets?” replaced by a Marty who’s conflicted about his decision but desperate not to become someone everyone around him is ashamed of. Because there is no sense of that in Movie Marty. He just sees the almanac and does this

Now I’m wondering: is there anyone who watched the movie and DID conclude that Marty bought the almanac specifically to avoid being a loser? Is it only me who thought he was just chasing easy fame and fortune for funsies??

a little more about the milkovich crime family (check out the post that inspired this au if you're lost)

mickey and svetlana are mainly loan sharks and fraudsters. the sharking is more mickey's domain; he's downright scary when he needs to be, and with his brothers by his side, he's fucking terrifying. nobody argues with him, and he makes back near double what he loans out. he's also the figurehead for a lot of the smaller theft they carry out - cars, credit cards, petty robberies - it all trickles up to mickey.

svet, on the other hand, has a talent for general racketeering - she deals in stolen goods and counterfeiting, bribery, and money laundering. she dictates the confidence tricks and identity theft they run, too. she's more charming than mickey is, and better at getting in people's heads, but she can be just as threatening as he is.

they've got toes dipped in a lot of other things, too. before terry's untimely death (soon after yev's birth), the milkoviches were pretty deep in the south side's drug trafficking rings. it's definitely still something they do, but since mickey took over, they've backed off on that a little. the other milkovich siblings have their own scams - gambling rings, blackmail, moonshine, you name it. maybe a little murder-for-hire. as a treat.

they've met the gallaghers several times. it started when lip went into college. scholarships didn't quite cover it, and no bank was going to give him a loan. enter mickey. once lip started working for the police, he got a little squirrely, but when svet offered to forgive the debt in exchange for protection from arrest, well. what could he say?

fiona's a gambler, and her run-ins with the milkoviches fall there. she's fucking good at it, and she always seems to take home a little more cash on days when tip-offs about chicago's organized crime end up going to lip or carl.

right around the time lip started college, ian landed a bartending job at the milkovich front. he was too young to be doing it legally, but they payed reasonably well and under the table, untaxed. he left on good terms when he started training as an emt a couple years later. he was nearly fired from that job after missing a chunk of work during a particularly rough low, but something made his boss reconsider. he never found out for sure, but he's got an inkling what (who) it was.

Book #171 - A Hat Full Of Sky by Terry Pratchett

(almost cried when Tiffany danced with the bees. don't know what that says about me.)

I've said this already, way back about Equal Rites, but I love how Pratchett writes old people. Especially when it shines through in Granny Weatherwax. In fact, it was a scene between Granny and Tiffany that brought on that thought again, as had originally a scene with Granny and Esk.

I'm really soft and squishy about this book, and I can't quite figure out why. Something about joy, and growing up. About finding a rival in a mentor, an equal in a progeny. About witches and community and a community of witches. About Jeannie changing her mind when she sees Tiffany among the memory of past and future keldas.

I'm now two for two on Tiffany books that put Existential Vertigo into their climax and I so dearly hope it continues. Idk, is it weird to have a favourite "niche" feeling?

I've seldom, if ever, read a book this blunt and this effective about this specific part of growing up, about becoming a person. It's so lovely. So fuckin lovely.

Also, for most of the book I was kinda rolling my eyes at the hints of puppy romance between Tiffany and the Baron's son, but when he gave her a dictionary of uncommon words, and he had underlined that one word, I was literally like "dou, Terry, you got me again". Like, fine, maybe the boy can have some rights. A few. On loan.

Final TOTA Takeover Drabble: The Dinner

Laughter:

Francine’s, quiet but open when Campbell picked up Terry and made noises at him like Terry was an infant instead of a kitten. Rosalie’s, brief but gracious, when Eddie brought a ruined charcoal lump into her house claiming it was meatloaf. Eddie’s, habitually self-effacing but making an effort to be less so, telling the table about his failed interaction with the lady with the cat bag in the market that afternoon. Campbell’s, energetic and open, retelling his best radio joke of the week. 

Fear:

Eddie’s, for a moment upon coming home, scared he would find Francine hurting in a way he couldn’t help her with. Campbell’s, brief but acute, worried as he pulled up that Eddie and Francine might’ve not waited for him because he was only doing his ‘silly’ job. Francine’s, as they left the flat, repetitively reminding herself that Terry would be safe by himself for a few hours. Rosalie’s, frequent but manageable, as her guests came in the door and set things down before sanitizing their hands. 

Hope:

Eddie’s, determined, as he shared his inches gained towards getting the loan. Rosalie’s, proud, describing the gradual softening of her community towards her and the other Hillcrest residents that she and the others were so ardently fueling. Francine’s, cautious, listing the jobs she’d applied for. Campbell’s, sure, telling his plans to get Spike Mulligan to come on for his show some time, then to keep bringing other loonies on from time to time. 

Sadness:

Everyone’s, for a moment, when Campbell brought up his flat’s faulty wiring and suddenly there was a hole in the room the size of the man in the photo on the windowsill.

People:

The ones they had lost, the ones they were making of themselves, the ones who made life so unfairly hard for people like them, the lovely ones they chanced to meet in neighbors or supermarket customers, the ones in that room.

Family:

Their old ones — Rosalie’s, happy then fragile then broken. Francine’s, awful then not one at all. Campbell’s, average but stiff and cold. Eddie’s, loving and heavy and lonely and idealistic then leaving. Their new ones — Rosalie’s, rebuilding and growing. Francine’s, new and safe. Campbell’s, supportive and understanding. Eddie’s, both near and far, new and old, knowing him as who he is. 

Dinner. Each other. Their Lives.

Do you think Daniel is a millionaire in the show? And that Terry really is a billionaire? Idk how Johnny and Miguel survive in California, poor things.

I think that Daniel has, as I think they call it, "excellent collatoral", or "liquidity" or some shit, which means that he can borrow all the money for his expenses. I mean, to open a business, with their backgrounds, they will have saved for a deposit on a loan, no way they were given that money. May have been an investor if they were paying a cut of their future profits. So, do they have a million in the bank after everything they owe? I really doubt it. Could they get their hands on like 300 k if they needed it? Yes. Is that money theirs? No.

They have a shittown of money coming in on car sales, but they owe the bank a shitton too. They need to keep a lot of money flowing. The trick is to gradually owe the bank less and less, so that at the time you come to sell the business, most of that sum is yours. But you also don't give all your money to the bank. Most small business' owners pensions are what they get when they sell the business. Now, a single car wash in Alberquerque cost about 900 k. Daniels owns four or so franchises, which are definitely worth several millions when sold. But how much does he owe? If they want to give the business to Sam, they can't live off the money for the sale. Which means they must have invested in some form of pension. Which may actually pay out several hundreds of thousands a year should the time come. And of course by then they could make a good profit on their house which is also worth over a million.

But that all depends on the business generating that sweet sweet money for the bank business loans and the pension funds and the mortgage and the insurance... If that stops spinning money, and the price they can get when they sell it drops - they're in deep shit. And I mean deep shit. So if they lose their supplier, Doyona? Which means they have to pay a lot more per car to sell when switching to another? Yikes, that is really serious. So it doesn't really matter how much he has in the bank. The question is how much can he get upon sale and when not selling, how big is his pension payout, and how much will be left. Will they downsize the house upon retirement? How much will they get for that?

Will Daniel be a millionaire when the business keeps doing well and all that profit starts flowing in to their bank accounts, owing the bank less and less? Yes! But they might have to employ Sam for a decade or so, so that they can build up personal wealth to retire on. They have access to money now based on the performance of the business, but that money isn't theirs. Yeah, they're millionaires.

But now, they're not. The value of the business tanks, a wealthy future goes with it.

Terry is bribing judges and buying up Cobra Kai franchises out of pocket. He doesn't give a shit if any of his franchises, or the whole business, tanks. He's investing in other people's businesses...

He's definitely someone who owns hundreds of millions. Is he a billionaire? A billion is 1000 million. I don't know. Probably. It's not something you can tell anymore by what car or wine or house they own. Nothing you consume is making a dent on even 500 million. It's staggeringly much. So maybe he isn't and can still easily fork out millions to invest in some kind of startup. But, the way he uses connections? And where he is? Keeps investing even now?

Rogue's Mom, Destiny is being a cryptic old biddy. She's present twice the story, but Mystique isn't. Maybe she died a while back after some encounter with the cult, resulting in Rogue being sent in as an agent. But, that's just my headcanon.
