Katara would be the one to be most supportive of Azula, and her most frequent visitor when they threw her in the… y’know.

Azula HATED Katara at first, She hated that this was the person to defeat her. She hated the fact that Katara always made time in her busy schedule to visit her. She hated that Katara was being kind to her. She hated that she was so sure that her brother was likely the one to convince katara to do this. But never once did she tell her to go away, did she try to push her away with insults? Yes. Did it work? No.

Katara only chose to help Azula because she witnessed her Mental breakdown, and it didn’t help that she knew of Zuko’s and Azula’s Homelife.

Katara was the first person to realize that Azula lost her bending(Headcanon of mine that Azula lost her bending for a few years after her mental breakdown)

It took them both years to realize they had feelings for each other and a few months to actually act on them.

Katara would often gush about Azula to Zuko, while he braided her hair. While Azula simply told her best friend, who is toph, that Katara was attractive and Toph made crude jokes that made the princess laugh her ass off.

After being released from her cell, Azula lived in the South Pole for a year, to her surprise she wasn’t beaten to death for what she has done to them in the past.

Katara and Azula often can’t sleep well, even before they get together if they are in the same place. They would end in each other’s arms for comfort.

Katara is able to read Azula like an open book, the same is for Azula.

Azula is the most awkward flirt Katara’s ever seen and she absolutely loves that about her. Azula gets flustered with a single compliment out of Katara’s mouth. Toph tried to do what Katara did and gave Azula a simple compliment, but all Azula did was call her a dumbass.

Azula is the most physically affectionate of the two.

Azula isn’t overly protective of Katara knowing what she is capable of but the same could not be said about Katara. If someone just gives them a look, she will take them down with her words, Azula loves it.

Katara is the one to encourage Azula to give her mother a chance.

When Azula and Katara play Pai sho, Azula does not care if the woman is her partner she will destroy her. Katara on the other hand doesn’t understand the game and somehow wins 90% of the time. Since then Azula swears Katara is not only a master in water bending but in strategic skill.

Katara is horrible at making Tea. Azula never tells her, when Iroh went to their house and was offered tea by Katara, he almost spat it out in an instant if it weren’t for Azula who was giving him a death glare. Azula refuses to admit that she loves Tea, just not katara’s.

Azula doesn’t mind if she’s a little or a small spoon, Katara usually prefers being big spoon.

Azula and Katara are both morning people! Even if they usually have all-nighters.

Katara practically babysits every time her girlfriend and Toph are in the same room

When they get arguments they both make each other Tea, sit in silence, then begin talking about what and why the topic upset them.

Azula regains her bending when she is in her late twenties but doesn’t use it unless necessary, Mostly uses it to show off to Katara and ZuZu.

Katara still gets nightmares of Azula screaming out flames, And Azula still gets nightmares of her time in that cell. They don’t talk about it until one of them begins shouting in their nightmares.

Azula asked for the permission of Hakoda and Sokka to marry Katara. Sokka knowing how much the woman changed gladly accepted her into the family. Hakoda and Azula got high together and Azula revealed how much she cared about Katara, and Hakoda gave her his blessing. Unknown to Azula, Katara asked for Zuko’s and Toph’s blessing, obviously, Zuko broke out into tears while Toph punched him and told him to get a hold of himself.

Aang officiated their wedding!! Zuko walked Azula down the Aisle and Hakoda walked Katara down the aisle as well.

Since Azula was the first to get married, Ursa often nagged her about wanting Grandchildren. It usually went like this “Mother I am a lesbian” “You can always adopt!” And they have three kids: Oldest is Lu Ten(Water bender), Youngest is Kya(Fire bender), and Eldest is Mira(Earth bender) :D

Katara and Azula get married in the Southern Water Tribe and just throw a party in the fire nation, much to Ursa’s dismay.

Since Zuko got his own dragon, Azula was jealous, so Katara gifted her a Polar bear dog, which was named Fikhar. Which Azula adored from the beginning

When Azula went to the southern water tribe to visit her girlfriend/wife she offered Hakoda and Sokka advice, which they almost always took.

Azula and Katara raised their kids quite oddly, 6 months in the southern pole and the other six months in the Fire Nation. This went on for ten years before they settled down in the southern Water tribe.

Azula was the cool aunt who gave Izumi all these gifts and candies while Katara was the one who told Izumi not to burn down the courtyard or play with her mother’s knives.

Tophzula Soulmates AU

Premise: AU where you can see through your soulmate’s eyes whenever you close your own. Note that its only sharing each other’s their sight, i.e. NO sound Would also like to this that the person in your vision remains like a dark/blurry silhouette … to keep it more of a mystery until you finally meet them.

Azula would see nothing when she closes her eyes and believe that it meant she has no soulmate (not understanding how seismic sight works...)

Makes her think that she is either undeserving of love or that no one is deserving of hers.  Can’t quite decide which is true.

Meanwhile, Toph’s ONLY experience with seeing the world is such a dark and sadistic viewpoint. She constantly flips between being concerned that her soulmate is someone so cruel to being concerned for them when seeing their moments of weakness or jealousy.  The nature of the AU makes it a little hard not to empathize at least a little bit.

Toph would also be able to see Azula’s hallucinations whenever they happen.

Toph is the one to finally figure it out, though she would’ve figured out that her soulmate was some Fire Nation noble of some sort she would never have guessed it was THE princess of the Fire Nation until she closed her eyes during a fight and finally see herself in the vision. 

Eventually she’d confront Azula with the realization and have to try convince her that they’re soulmates. Azula, who has gone this long believing that she had none is...pretty unwilling to listen.

Toph would probably do this this by teaching her how see with seismic sight. OR maybe by just revealing something person to Azula that she might’ve seen.

Uhhhhh and that’s all I got on it so far...  Open to discussion.

ATLA Ship Tier List

This took forever and I’m like 2 months late. @avatraang tagged me forever ago (thank you)

This was torture for me because my brain categorizes ships based on platonic chemistry vs romantic chemistry, how well it works in canon, fanfiction dynamics, fanart dynamics, and general vibe/aesthetic. I somehow managed to compress all that down and squeeze all these ships into 5 basic categories.

With that said:

Red Tier/OTP: Kataang, Maiko, Tokka, Zukaang, Sokkaang, Mailee. I consume the most amount of content for these ships and the characters in these ships. I love everything about them. They are my obsession.

Orange Tier/Cute: Maiaang, Katoph, Maitara, Maizula, Sukitara, Maitoph, Yueaang, Jetaang, Yuetara, Yuekka, Tyzula. I still like these a lot, just not as much as the ones in the OTP list. If I haven’t read anything for the ships listed here, it’s because they intrigue me and I like something about their dynamic but I have yet to explore more about the ship.

Green Tier/Like It: Jetlee, Jetzula, Yuejet, Jetko, Sukaang, Azulaang, Maiki, Tophzula, Sukka, Zukka, Tylaang, Taang. This tier is a bit of a mixed bag. I like the idea of some of these and just haven’t read enough for them, or they’re kind of meh.

Blue Tier/It Exists: Maikka, Tylara, Azutara, Toko, Toki, Yueki, Tysuki, Azuki, Yuetoph, Jetkka, Yai, Yueko, Tyzuko, Jai, Tyue, Tophlee, Jetki, Yuezula, Jetoph. A lot of these I just don’t think would work or I have no opinion on them.

Black Tier/No. Absolutely Not: Zuki, Zutara. Don’t know what else to say except these grate on my nerves. I will never like them.

With the way I categorize ships in my head a lot of these are generalizations. If you want a more in-depth opinion on any specific ship feel free to send me an ask! :)

ok idk if i'd call this an “otp” but i do really love tophzula lmao. but that ship is mostly a scenario in my head in which (several years post-canon of course) they aren't actually dating, but they stage for zuko to accidentally walk in on them making out purely for the sake of menacing him like the little sisters they are. then they're like “zuko please don't tell anyone we're together we don't want to be public about it yet 🥺🥺” and their uncharacteristic (false, lol) sincerity and vulnerability gets to him and he agrees to keep it a secret. and he's in agony because he, oversharer that he is, can't even tell people that two of his little sisters are dating!! he's dying and he can't even talk about it oh god. and their plan has worked >:). i also think they could actually be good together lol but what i find most compelling about the ship is the comedic potential

to/kka is the only one that's a popular ship. i mean i don't have a strong opinion on whether or not toph's “crush” on sokka was real, but they age gap is icky to me, even if they're adults. and toph is sokka's little brother!! his eldest daughter!!

favorite platonic/familial relationships

i really love all her relationships with the gaang but i think for this i'm gonna go with katara. they're both so powerful and self-assured and they have such different relationships with gender and that sometimes causes them to butt heads but at the end of the day they're sisters and they love each other so so much

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with

that she had a kid with sokka. like none of her characterization in lok makes sense (even the swamp hag thing, which i mostly enjoy, does a disservice against her arc in atla, which was largely about learning interdependence) but WHY do people feel the need to make her character (& sokka's!) even worse with this dumb headcanon

the position they sleep in

sprawled out inside a tent made of rocks. even when she's staying with zuko or her parents or some other fancy place. she makes a tent of rocks to sleep in.

Poly ship thing: A:TLA

Hi Magi! Thanks for the ask!

Give me a fandom and I’ll give you my:

* OT3 (triangle, all involved with one another): so I have. More than one of these. Like a lot. My main three are Zujintara, Jetkotara, and Maizulee. There's also Teophaang and Suekka (or whatever Suki/Sokka/Yue is called). Official one for this is Maizulee.

* OTV (three ppl, but one person is involved with the other two): Maikotara. Katara has a gf and a bf who are still learning to get along after their breakup years ago. I also like this one ok as a triangle.

* OT4 (quad, all involved with one another): Zujintaret my beloved. All the fluff of Zujintara, all the history of Jetkotara, what's not to love?

*OTN (four ppl, but not all involved with one another): hmm. I don't particularly have one of these, but right after I started shipping Teoaang and Tophzula it occurred to me that those could happen at the same time as Taang. So yeah. I don't have a name for it, though.

*OTMoar (five or more in a polyfidelitious ship together): Katara x Jin x Zuko x Jet x Ty Lee. This started out as "give Katara all the SOs she could possibly desire" but quickly morphed into "they're all dating at least most of the others". It works.

*OTPPP (poly puppy pile of a group in any manner of configuration of my choice): *screaming* too many options. Suffice to say, it is complicated and I can't decide which of the many possible configurations to put here.

*OTPOTP (two OTPs that I think should link up together for occasional sexy times): N/A. I do not wish to think about the sexy times.

*OTO (OTP in an open relationship): Taang all the way. I actually headcanon that this is how Teophaang would get started-- Toph and Aang are in an open relationship, Aang starts dating Teo, Toph and Teo become besties and start dating.

*OTPLP (one true platonic life partners): I mean, I don't care whether any of these ships are romantic or not most of the time, I just want the emotional intimacy and the Feelings™.

and just for funzies, I’ll throw in the traditional…

*OTP: I have so many. So here I will put a pairing I quite like but haven't really talked about cause I mostly ship them with each other (and Yue in a Yue Lives AU): Sukka.

Why do you ship Tophzula?

Oh for a lot of reasons, but most importantly I think they would have a very interesting dynamic.

Before I get into it I need everyone to understand that I only ship Tophzula (romantically or platonically) in circumstances where Azula has not only gotten the help she needs, but is also in the process of making amends for her past actions. I don’t sit here during rewatches of A:tLA and delude myself into thinking there’s any interest, platonic or otherwise, happening between them. They would not make for good friends in the circumstances during or directly following the series.

Now, to the meat.

Toph and Azula are both prodigies used to being the best at their respective crafts and by extension, being some of the most powerful people in the room. They both have pretty large personalities that, while prone to clashing, could also make for a resilient pairing. I can see them sparring and having an ongoing friendly rivalry, gossiping with each other during formal events, being introverts together, using their perceptiveness and bluntness to hold each other accountable during arguments, and shamelessly oversharing about their romantic lives to get a rise out of their friends, etc. 

I can see Toph teasing out the inner child in Azula and teaching her to let loose just a little, and I can see Azula making Toph feel seen. Azula, for one, would never forget Toph is blind. I think Toph and Azula would find camaraderie in being raised in nobility and all the emotional struggles they endured, understand one another as people who have different than normal ways of expressing affection, and respect one another’s unflinching reads. Toph would tease Azula for being awkward in relaxed social situations, and Azula would chide Toph for being a gross little gremlin who flicks her boogers at people on the street. Toph would find Azula’s sharp intellect engaging, as Azula would recognize Toph’s own brand of genius, and they could both enjoy witty repartee. They would definitely find each other’s prowess attractive. Toph would call Azula out when she falls into old habits of haughtiness or shows signs of regressing, and Azula would do the same when Toph lets her old hurts or stubbornness win over. Toph would be a good rock for Azula as she navigates her lifelong battle with her demons. They wouldn’t be intimidated or put off by the other’s hard edges.

They could also challenge each other during conflict. I think they both have very sharp tongues, and have the power to cut each other deeply during arguments. But they have the emotional intelligence to know how far is too far. They’re not shy about saying what someone needs to hear, even if they don’t like hearing it. Sometimes when their friends are loathe to be brutally honest with them, they can rely on one another to tell it like it is, no sugar-coating. They could be SO good.

Toph was the first person to reach out to Zuko when he approached the Gaang with peaceful intentions, and was even quick to recognize that he acted accidentally when he burned her feet. When she heard his side of the story, she could have held onto her anger or went with everyone’s suspicions but she didn’t. This tells me that she tends to give people the benefit of the doubt and doesn’t see the productiveness in holding grudges for very long.

This isn't to say that she would find it easy to forgive Azula by any means. HOWEVER, I think Toph is the second-most forgiving person in the group, after Aang. It makes her a great candidate for someone in the Gaang who Zuko could reasonably introduce to Azula following a personal redemption arc or who could realistically offer an olive branch on their own. 

I have more thoughts but this about sums up the major points.

i like yuezula, tophzula(but platonic! i think theyd be good friends esp since toph wouldnt think twice abt calling azula out) mailee, and i think the maileezula/dangerous ladies+maizula is interesting

i wish tophzula (azutoph?) was more popular... or at least talked about either platonic or romantic. i think, as adults, toph would be good for azula... i see a lot of future atla fan content where azula is being pitied mid/post redemption for her childhood and breakdown and i think azula would hate that pity but toph wouldnt offer her that at all, she wouldnt waste any time being brutally blunt with a nice playful mix of sarcasm that azula would probably prefer over pity or sadness abt her situation, toph wouldnt treat her like shes fragile! (also i love the idea of them going back-and-forth, teasing each other and being playfully rude to one another)

-their dynamic is a lot like Zion & Georgia's (from Ginny and Georgia), minus them getting back together and breaking up constantly

-they love to give parenting strategies to one another

-Kanto was one of the first people Toph came out to (and vice versa)

-Kanto is the 'cool dad', which drives Toph insane because she has to be the 'bad cop' to Suyin

-they both go to pride together, with Kanto going all out and Toph being more laid back when it comes to dressing up
