I decided that starting off with the grimdark stuff was too bold.

So here's some exposition and worldbuilding for Pixel City.

Transcript:

Video game game characters are just like us. They use public transportation.

Took a while, but I made this!! info below the cut

The inkling girl in the first panel is Carlotta Marisa Ikaraggi, and she's a prodigal sign interpreter for the Squid sisters. And her surname sounds like Ikarrage, or "fried squid" in Japanese, which is what Calamari is. She's from splatsville and her parents come from Cephaloflorence, Inktaly.

The gal next to her is from the Hoenn region. She's an ace trainer named Kasumi Dominica Hamasaki-Brooks. She's deaf in one ear and wants to be a water type gym leader.

Also in the first panel is the Sniper from Team Fortress 2. After finding out he NEVER buys his own shirts, I figured he'd be the kind of person to only enter a contest or competition if the grand prize is a free T-shirt. So yeah, with the transferable skills, Mr. Mundy became the Bee photography champ of 1964. Also he's wondering how Waddle Doo is listening to music.

Knuckles is autistic in my HC, and while he (much like Eggman) is a feminist, he doesn't like to read long paragraphs. So I decided he would read a book of Alison Bedschel Cartoons.

In the second panel, we see two sims characters, one of which is an oc. Hali'a el-Ghani is Hawaiian/Senegalese, and likes floral hijabs. To her right is Savannah Price, but I decided to give her a better looking hairstyle (namely box braids in a ponytail with some edges).

Also Mario and Luigi and Bob the Cat.

The mannequins are of Princess Dragonfruit (my idea of what Wa-Peach is like, somewhat like Bowsette, and she's cringefail villain with a Dr.Doofenshmirtz level of incompetence and her girlfriend is Princess Chammomile, who's pretty much WaDaisy and she sleeps often and has a mellow but lazy stoner-ish vibe) and some random guy.

The next panel shows a club of some sort. Rouge the bat wants to play a game of Chaosvolley with Undyne.

I decided that rouge the bat WOULD wear the jewelry she steals, and frequently lies about where she got it. Also I can't draw anyone playing pool to save my life. So I made up a dangerous "Party sport" instead.

The shirt Undyne is wearing is based off of a hat from @shirtsthatgohard

Bronto Burt is in the corner dancing.

The sonic character in the BG is an oc named Guava the Fennec. She's a green fox with pink eyes and likes fruit smoothies

The foreground shows a Hylian named Shimea who's family runs a tea house inn oot castle town. The Toad next to her is Enokiko Toad, a reserved and intelligent gal who's also quite blunt and also very autistic.

Note that none of the characters on this page who wear school uniforms wear the exact same uniform. That's because Principal Isabelle Shizue (yes from animal crossing) forgot to have a uniform made for Lawson High (named after Jerry Lawson, who pretty much invented the video game console) so Isabelle just put (wear a school uniform.

In reality, it's because I have ADHD and I don't want to draw the same uniform multiple times.

Since we’re on the subject of Pokemon, how about Oak x Blue/Gary?

Grandpai and Grandson a real Depends kind of dynamic. I'd say D - I'm Neutral to it.

I don't have strong feelings for either of these dudes, I didn't watch early Pokemon so my first actual in show interaction with Gary was the Adventure series where he shows up to be a bit of a bitch to Goh.

I guess I like Oak, I know he's kind of stupid, throws himself physically at Pokemon a lot, a real funny guy, and I like Gary being a Professor training under him, I think it's cute.

I do wanna know more, dynamic and headcanons and what not. I just don't care about the characters enough for this one, but the dynamic sounds fantastic.

Palatial Voltfruit tea,

The idea of Palatial being a synonym for "Royal" stems from the usage of "Palace" or "Monarchial Place of residence" to refer to the royal court (i.e. Pharoh to refer to ancient royal courts of Khemet, Forbidden City in the Medieval Chinese context). In the Gerudo language I went with "Vira" or "Villa" as it works well with "Voe" "Vai" etc.

Voltfruit tea is known as Savo'Cha or Sabōten (cactus) and Cha (tea)

Yes I think (at some point in the comic) Ganondorf will correct Escargoon for saying

"I do love a piping hot cup of Savo'Cha tea!"

"Savo'Cha tea? Cha is the term for tea, Voe. You're saying tea-tea. Would I ask you if you wanted a coffee-coffee with room for cream-cream?"

YESSSS WHIRLS AROUND IN MY BIG SPINNING CHAIR. i Love merch hunting and giving merch hunting tips, there's a whole beautiful world of often remarkably inexpensive yugioh merch out there and once you learn how to track it down a new chapter of your life can truly begin. I bestow onto you some of my advice gleaned from about two and a half years of Searching For Merch Like a Tuffle-Sniffing Hog:

(note: while im specifically focusing on ygo spinoff merch here, you can use this advice to find all kinds of cool japan-exclusive merch!! im constantly getting japanese pokemon merch via tips like these, for example.)

Anyway, MERCH HUNTING TIP NUMBER ONE:

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT BUT JAPANESE EXCLUSIVE MERCH ON EBAY. DONT. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

HEAVY SIGH. ebay can be such a useful site but not for this. good god not for this. You might luck out with a stray deal here or there but stuff like japanese exclusive yugioh merch on ebay tends to more often than not be sold for OUTRAGEOUSLY high prices and maybe it's not technically a scam but well your wallet aint gonna be happy about it. Stuff like tiny Cospa keychains get sold for $30, $40, 80 FUCKING US AMERICAN DOLLARS. AND SHIPPING. LOOK AT THIS SHIT

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS??!??! NIGHTMARE. NIGHTMARE. do not buy spinoff merch from ebay!! INSTEAD....

TIP TWO: come with me. to proxy buying service ❤❤❤❤

I love proxy services SO much. Basically theyre sites that will buy stuff from Japanese shopping sites on your behalf, then hold the goodies in their warehouse until you're ready to ship them over to you! They RULE. THEY ARE LIFECHANGING, FOR THE HUMBLE MERCH HUNTER. And they're all pretty intuitive to learn how to use, theyve got pretty solid FAQs and they'll walk you through how to request items, and theyll often let you search for merch ON their website, making the buying process even easier!

(There's a whole bunch of 'em, though and they all have different fees and amounts of time they'll hold your stuff for free, so you have to do some poking around and figure out which one you like using the most! My favorite go-to is Neokyo, personally; they have some great discount sales, they hold your stuff for free for 45 days, and their item request fees are all really reasonable!! I LOVE THEM. BEEN USING EM FOR YEARS NOW <3)

Anyway the point here, re: proxy sites, not only do they give you easy access to japanese resale sites and all the merch being sold on 'em, it also gives you access to tWay, Way, Waaaaayyy Lower Prices for trinkets and goodies. Like. look at this listing from Mercari JPN (viewed on Neokyo's site,) of the $125 Jack Atlas Phone Charm from my first tip

yeah that is, um. the same charm. AND two other adorable charms. FOR 13 AMERICAN DOLLARS. THIRTEEN. THAT IS. LITERALLY LIKE 90% CHEAPER THAN THAT EBAY LISTING. AND YOURE GETTING MORE STUFF. there is SO much yugioh (and other anime) merch being sold on jpn shopping sites for like. $4-$10. it is ridiculous. and then when proxy sites have discount deals you can get stuff for even CHEAPER sometimes. (theres also, of course, expensive merch lots too, just like with anything, theres just. also listings for stuff sold for less than a fancy dinner for two yknow HHDFGS)

it basically opens a whole new avenue of sites to find goodies on... I like using proxy buyers especially for listings on more general ebay-type sites like JPN Mercari (there is so much good and sometimes really rare stuff on there) and Surugaya (lots of doujins on there if that's your thing,) but also for buying from the main sites New ygo merch drops happen on (Cospa, eeo store, and the official KaibaCorp store in particular are some of the best.)

Ok, so, ya got your proxy service of choice. How do you find the goodies you're looking for?

TIP THREE: GOTTA KNOW THE BEST KEYWORDS!!!

this isnt really a rocket science tip, but, still: search for stuff not just in japanese but use the kanji!! Sometimes i'll just c/p the base characters of a yugioh guy's japanese name off their yugipedia page and then pop that into the mercari search just to see what sorta treats are floating around with them on it. But if going and constantly copy/pasting kanji into the proxy service search is a pain in the neck a lot 'em will auto translate your English searches too! again, theyre all really user friendly, which is great

(the one thing i will say you SHOULD search in english, though, is spinoff names, actually--you pop GX, ZEXAL, ARC-V, etc. into the proxy search and youll get all sorts of stuff for whatever series it is)

OK ONE MORE TIP FOR YA. TIP FOUR: DO WHAT YOU CAN TO GET THE MOST OF SHIPPING COSTS

ok so that is. the one pain, with merch hunting on proxy buying sites: shipping will probably be Expensive. (unless you go for the cheapest seamail options and then get your box maybe 4-6 months from now 🥴 but hey, it's an option! it's there!) I usually end up paying around $30-$50 for my boxes from Neokyo.

BUT you can at least make that shipping cost feel more reasonable if youre shipping A BUNCH OF STUFF. Shipping one (1) little $4 GX character can badge for $30 REALLY sucks, avoid this if you can--with proxies holding your stuff in their warehouse, you can get a bunch of little cheap goodies and just hold 'em until youre ready to get 'em packed and shipped. Then, whenever youre ready/have the money for the shipping cost, get all the stuff youve bought packed into one box, pay for the shipping, and (usually within two weeks--the one tradeoff of the high shipping price is you get that shit FAST) then get your stuff! It's like FUCKIN CHRISTMAS getting a box of proxy-obtained stuff including things from like two months ago i totally forgot i bought. Makes the $40 shipping sting a little less--like, hey, at least i got like 12 damn things in here and i didnt pay $125 for any of them!!!!

Curiosities of a trainer (closed RP)

Zac was a rather interesting trainer, name with how one of his own pokemon kind of pressured him into making a new team. One of the new team members was a fairly nerdy azumaril that he often caught reading manga and doujins. Granted, he didn’t necessarily know the contents of the manga she red, but he figured it was some fairly tame stuff like the mangas he usually read….oh boy, was he about to be proven wrong.

Zac was going to go into her room to ask her something but found her absent. He was about to head out when he noticed that one of her mangas were left open on her bed, peaking his curiosity as he went over to see the contents. Zac’s face reddened once he saw the pages, as it was the most Yaoi thing that anyone could have ever seen. Once the initial shock got over him, he could help but be amazed by just how well drawn it was….even though the subject was not his cup of tea, he couldn’t help but be impressed by the art. Granted, it was embarrassing to read it, but he quickly started to get invested in the story.

Hello I must apologise for the entirely untoasty ask but I have a touhou question: What order did you consume touhou media? I found some guide on reddit that recommends I finish 6 and 7 first then move on to a manga but I wanna know how people who actually know touhou have done it

in my opinion. it depends. on what you want to get out of touhou. at least at first. if you want to play. the mainline games. (they are fun.) then i would recommend. starting with 8. because. it is very forgiving. and. introduces you to many characters well-loved by fans. 6 is pretty antiquated. and 7 is honestly not much better. in that regard. they are still good games. but. 8 doesn’t feel quite as aged.

however. there are a great many ways. to get into touhou. that do not involve playing 20 year old shoot em ups. if that is not something you want to do. for example. while it is good. to have a basic understanding. of what happens in at least the first few games. you could. literally just start reading any of the manga. if you wanted to. the problem is that you really can start anywhere. that’s why everyone has a different answer. personally. i played the games in an arbitrary order. not paying attention to release date. i just played whichever one i wanted to play next. that was the most fun for me. i think my 1cc order ended up being. 8, 10, 7, 13, 16, 6, 18, 15, 17, 14, 12, 19, 11, 4. so far. i plan to play 5 next.

however. if you would like to know. what i consider to be. one of the best introductions to gensokyo. and its residents. i would recommend mystia's izakaya. it is incredibly effective at introducing you. to a large number of characters. locations. and ideologies. over the course of the game. especially if you shell out the $5 or whatever it is. to buy all of the DLCs. also. it's fun. and addictive. there are other fan games. that can serve as decent introductions. depending on the kind of games you like. touhou puppet dance performance shard of dreams extended. is pretty good. if you like pokemon gen 3. and. i know that i will earn the scorn. of certain fans. by saying this. but touhou lostword is really good actually. it is not at all difficult to see all of the (genuinely very good) story and (cute seasonal) events. without spending any money at all. in fact. when it first got released. i was worried that it would shut down. because i thought. there is no way they are going to get anyone to pay money for this. because there aren't any of the obnoxious arbitrary difficulty spikes. that you find in other gacha games. and. getting all of my favorite characters. was honestly really easy. though. if you are prone to spending money on gachas. for no reason. then you should probably stay away from it.

you could even just. go to youtube. and watch every IOSYS flash. with english subtitles. and you'd be a touhou fan by the end of it. there's really no wrong way. to get into it. hell. just go read some yuri doujins. check out vector spectacle. it whips.
