there's one specific shot in dead boy detectives that i need to yap about

this one.

now this might just be the film student in me overanalysing because the scene itself isn't even really about the relationships but i think the positioning of the characters is so specific it has to have meaning??

like if the goal was just charles and edwin in the centre, they would've had it so they walk over and the order is crystal-charles-edwin-monty

but they didnt

they specifically had charles walking into the space between edwin and monty

and we know that this makes sense - charles is who's causing the rift between edwin and monty, he's literally in the middle of them because edwin's feelings for him are the main thing stopping edwin and monty becoming a thing

but this positioning also puts edwin in between charles and crystal

so if charles is between edwin and monty because edwin's feelings for him are what's stopping the other relationship, is edwin in between charles and crystal for the same reason??

The acting in Dead Boy Detectives is amazing, but one of the things I haven't seen mentioned much is how much thought goes into the delivery between lines, the sorts of decisions that probably aren't noted in the script.

There are so many examples of this all throughout the series, but I want to call out this little moment.

It's a high stress situation. Edwin is incredibly tense. The whole fiasco with the Cat King has him genuinely upset. The case has started to go sideways, and Charles is doing his best to calm Edwin down.

So watch what Charles does. While Edwin's paying attention, he's all reassurance. He tells him he's there to help. He coaches him to breathe. He's all easy smiles.

But my God, the second Edwin stops paying attention, that smile drops immediately.

Charles is stressed, too. This boy, who has spent a lifetime trying to be good enough, has been doing his utmost to help Edwin fix things. He keeps trying to find out why Edwin is so upset, but no matter how many times he asks, Edwin won't tell him.

The way Charles smiles, or doesn't, based on who is paying attention to him and when, is frankly brilliant. It's such a fantastic character choice, and it perfectly illustrates the way he wears his smiles when he thinks other people need them.

In this moment, it's on full display: this smile is entirely for Edwin, to help Edwin feel more comfortable in a fraught situation.

It's not about what Charles is feeling at all.

you ever think about how part of Charles feeling a lot better by the end of the series is because he finally could do something about something? he went and got Edwin from hell. HE did that. and he bloody well succeeded

There’s something about the fact that ghosts can’t even truly feel anything and yet Charles is so constantly physical with Edwin. The way when Charles breaks down at the beach Edwin tries to reciprocate that physical comfort in return. It’s possible to read it as a lack of thought from the creators but it is so much more interesting to look at it from a character perspective.

Also do you ever think about how they had physical forms in hell and thus they could both almost certainly feel each other for the first time in thirty years? That the physical comfort that Charles gave, both after finding Edwin and after Edwin confesses, are probably the first non painful contact Edwin has had in almost a century? The fact that when Charles cradles Edwin’s face in his hands, when he held his shoulders and told him Edwin is the most important person in the world to him, Edwin could actually feel that? Ha ha. Because. Because I do.

I know we talk about the Devlin house reflecting a possible future where Charles’s father killed him but have we talked about the Devlin house reflecting a possible future where Charles doesn’t break the cycle of a abuse and perpetuates it towards his own family

edwin is a better, stronger man than i, because i would be infinitely more dramatic and petty in his position when crystal enters the scene and charles starts paying attention to her. i would have comic!edwin’s reaction at least (accusing charles of choosing girls over him, storming off to solve cases on his own and deciding to do shit that will get him into trouble so that charles has to come rescue him, etc) but i’d probably take it a step further. i’d be like “i guess you want me to go back to hell then since i’m basically nothing to you 😒” and then i’d legitimately go back to hell JUST to see if he came after me. if he didn’t come after me then an eternity of torture in hell is nothing compared to the pain of rejection and being replaced. but i’m also incredibly mentally ill, so.

(james acaster once told a story about a christmas where he asked his parents for a spice girls cd. he found out whilst at the pool with his family that his sister was getting the cd instead of him. naturally, he tried to drown himself in the pool to make his parents feel guilty. that’s my vibe if i were ever in edwin’s position.)

joe'marr bengals reunion — a (somewhat) comprehensive timeline

1 — “have you spoken to the cincinnati bengals and what would it mean to reunite with joe burrow there?” — “i have talked to the bengals. i don’t know how many times i’ve talked to them though. but, me and joe, you know, i wouldn’t mind going back with joe. if we go back together we’re trying to do nothing but get back our chemistry and have some more fun.”

2 — “i'm really excited for this draft. i don't really know what's coming but, you know, if me and joe could get back to it... i’d love to have some fun with him again.”

3 — “i assume you'd be okay with a potential reunion in cincinnati if that were to happen?" — "yeah, i wouldn’t mind.”

4 — “me and joe talked about [a reunion] maybe like three, four times actually. we talked about it a good bit of times. he texted me this morning, just letting me know: ‘get your bags packed’, so i guess that meant that was gonna be the pick. i don’t know if that was a hint or what. so, he sent me that little text this morning, i was like ‘okay… i'm ready, bro’.”

5 — “what was your reaction like when he was lowkey recruiting you?” — “i actually was believing him sometimes, sometimes i was like ‘stop playing with me’ and sometimes i was just like ‘okay bro, i gotcha, i'm ready now’ so. i believed him this morning when he told me, you know, pack my bags. so that's when i finally was like: ‘yeah he might really be calling this’ so that's when i took his word.”

6 – “jimmy burrow, did joe tell you—he’s always been kind of coy about what he said to the bengals—did joe tell you that he wanted the bengals to select ja’marr?” — “yes, i think we figured that… and eventually… yes, he pretty much told us that he wanted ja’marr.”

7 — “it was like a week before the draft, ja'marr said: ‘dad, joe texted me.’ […] he didn't say what he said, you know. but he said: ‘joe just texted me’, [...] so he had talked to joe like... or texted with joe once or twice that week. and then he told me, he said: ‘dad, if i get with joe, we're gonna kill’ [...] so he was all excited about getting with joe.”

8 — “what was the first thing joe texted you when you got drafted by the bengals?” — “make sure your bag's packed and ready. yeah, that was what he told me.”
