My next headcanon for why The Cat King found Edwin initially so intriguing is the same reason that my anxious cat loves my one friend. Because in life he was allergic. There is a magnetic pull between cats and people their dander will kill, and The Cat King is no exception. Edwin may no longer technically be allergic to cats, but they still KNOW.

just saw a post that was a pic of Charles and Crystal that said “they’re so lavender marriage core” and like…yeah. I feel like Charles is honestly repressed enough that if he started to feel like maybe his ‘best friend feelings’ for Edwin were going in a different direction, he would immediately run to a woman to, like, sort him out. Almost to prove something, right? It’s like, “Noooo I don’t feel that way, I’m straight! I’ll date a woman to prove it!” This probably would have happened many times in the 30 years that he and Edwin have spent so far, likely without Charles fully realizing what he’s doing until after Edwin’s confession. I bet he wouldn’t do it anymore, mostly to spare Edwin’s feelings, and then be shocked by the depths of his own emotions like “when did this get here??”

Oh, and Crystal likes girls yada yada blah blah blah….Seriously, however, I would suspect that Crystal is a lot more open about herself and her own feelings, including her bi or pan sexuality (I’ve seen theories on both, personally, I haven’t much of an opinion when it comes to labels) but still. Dating Charles to get her mind off of traumatic events seems likely of her, given that she uses a bit of an avoidance tactic. These traumatic events could be David, her parent’s lack of presence and affection, but most likely Niko’s death. That shit would obviously wreck her, and I believe she would begin to understand that the way she felt for Niko might not have been entirely just platonic, which is a terrible realization to have AFTER it’s no use.

This relates back to lavender marriage as a concept, that Charles would date a woman to hide his own sexuality and feelings for a man, although Crystal is more participating for the sake of her emotional wellbeing, and to cover up the bad stuff with something good (a valid mental health tactic). Either way, while not exactly a ‘lavender marriage’ in a miriam-webster sense, I find that the connections are still there, enough for me to want to write about it, I suppose.

fic idea - canon Edwin gets hit with a spell that switches him places with a modern+alive au Edwin

so when Charles runs up to Edwin to check if he's alright, he gets a confused stare and a "...Charles?! Why are you wearing a polo? And where are all of your tattoos?" from the Edwin lying on the ground who's very much Edwin, just not his Edwin. he's alive for one

the au Edwin is 18 and freshly enrolled at uni, where he's just met his new roommate, Charles, only a few weeks ago

(there's obvious tragedy in this modern Edwin learning that there's a 1910s counterpart of him who'd been killed at 16, but let's ignore that for now) the fun part is - modern Edwin would have grown up in the 2010s and wouldn't be bullied for being gay/different so he's way more open and chill than canon Edwin, still sassy and a smartass, but just more sure of himself

so much so that since he doesn't believe in ghosts, and kinda thinks this whole thing might be a dream anyway, he decides to flirt with this polo-clad version of Charles to test out the waters. he's had a crush on his roommate basically from the moment they met and they're going to eventually switch him back to his reality anyway, so he sees no harm in going for it

modern Edwin is in a t-shirt that shows off his arms and jeans, and his hair is wavy and he looks just a tad older, and has just an inch of height on Charles now (courtesy of @dear-lucrow <3), and he laughs openly and compliments Charles, and tells him he'd look good in tattoos, and Charles simply can't handle any of it!!

Crystal ("oh, you're Charles's friend, right?") is annoyed beyond belief that modern Edwin is a cynic who doesn't believe in ghosts, psychics or any magic at all
