So, I saw Damsel today...
**Spoilers and complete plot for the movie Damsel will be all over this post, so don't read if you care about spoilers. Also, this is based on one watch only, so if some timeline details are very slightly wrong, that is why, though the important parts I'll be discussing are not contingent on these details.**
I'm not usually one to closely review a movie, but this one left me with a lot of thoughts that kind of sum up a lot of my feelings about big budget movies in the past decade, so here I go.
First off, I did like Damsel. I enjoyed watching it. It was gorgeous to look at, and Millie Bobby Brown did a fantastic job with the role and script she was given. However, I was left feeling like there was something very important about the whole experience missing, and it took me a few moments to really put my finger on it afterwards. The plot was fine, if a bit predictable, and I did appreciate the focus on Elodie as a protagonist. I loved that the dragon was given a plausable reason to want to devour/kill princesses, and that the dragon wasn't slain at the end, even though the opportunity was presented. And oh my goodness, the costuming department did a phenomenal job.
What I want to do here is give a rundown of the plot, and to then give my thoughts, so if you've seen the movie and don't care for a rehash you can skip to the next set of dashes.
--------
So, basic plot: The film opens on a scene of a king and his entourage of knights are entering a sinister cave, where there dwells a fearsome dragon. The king declares that they will defeat the dragon, and his knights charge, but are immediately melted by the dragon's fire, leaving only the king. The king drives his sword into the ground, and falls to his knees, and the scene cuts away before we see what happens next.
Centuries later, Princess Elodie and her little sister Floria live in a kingdom that is beset with hardship. They are low on money and food, and their people are facing a hard winter. So when the king is contacted by the royal family of the kingdom of Aurea--a kingdom they had never heard of, but that seems to be very wealthy--with the proposal that Elodie marry the Aurean prince, the family immediately travels to Aurea to finalize agreements. Amongst the traveling party are Elodie, Floria, their queen stepmother, and the king.
Upon arrival in Aurea, Elodie is introduced to prince Henry, while the kings meet alone. However, when the king emerges from the negotiation chamber, his wife immediately notices that he seems upset and deeply disturbed, though he assures her that everything is in good order, the deal has been made, and their kingdom will soon have more gold than he ever dreamed of as compensation for their daughter's marriage to the prince.
The stepmother queen, sensing something is wrong, goes to Elodie and tells her not to marry the prince, but she has resigned herself to helping her people, even if it means marriage to a man she does not know. That night, she steps out ont her balcony and sees another tower, with another young woman doing the same, before the young woman's maid calls her back inside.
The next day, Elodie is married to prince Henry, and is told of a ritual that is performed after weddings up on a nearby mountain, that honors the trials of their ancestors. They travel up to the mountain, where Elodie is told of the story we witnessed at the opening of the film. When the ancestors of the Aurean people arrived on their island, it was inhabited already by a dragon, who set upon them, raining destruction for the insult of invading its land. Though the king was unable to slay the beast, he was able to broker an agreement. His people would be left alone if he were willing to sacrifice his three daughters to the dragon. So now, whenever a new royal heir is married, they make the trip up to the dragon's mountain, over the chasm that leads to its lair, to commemorate the sacrifice of that original king.
The queen motions to Henry, who then slices his palm, and once Elodie has done the same, they mingle their blood, symbolizing that their people have now become of one blood and line. The prince tells Elodie that, at this point, he is to carry her back across the chasm, and that she should close her eyes. But halfway across, he whispers that he is sorry, and then he throws her over the edge, down into the depths of the dragon's caves.
Elodie survives relatively unharmed, her fall having been broken by many roots and branches along the drop, but there seems to be no way out. Very shortly thereafter, she has her first encounter with the dragon itself, who epresses delight at the thought of getting to kill her, and Elodie is forced to run from the dragon's fire. She hits a dead end, and there she finds the body of the young woman she had seen the night before, half burned, and realizes that they were always ment to be sacrifices to the dragon. The dragon continues to taunt her, breathing more fire down the passage where she is trapped, but she notices a narrow hole in the cave wall that she manages to wedge herself through it, barely escaping and sustaining a severe burn on one leg. She rips part of her dress off, wrapping it around her wound, and continues.
From here, we get a lengthy series of scenes of Elodie navigating her way through the trecherous cave system, hounded at every turn by the dragon. She finds an area inhabited by bioluminescent slugs, which she gathers in another part of the dress that she tears off, to use as a lanter, and finally reaches a small cave where a princess before her has written on the wall that this place is safe, and that the dragon cannot reach there. Written on the walls are the names of dozens of other princesses that, over the centuries, have reached this cave before inevitably being caught and killed by the dragon. Next to the names is a rough map of the cave system, showing Elodie a passage marked with a sun, which she assumes is the way out. She takes time to rest here, falling asleep, but when she wakes up she finds her burned leg covered in the bioluminescent slugs. She tears them away in disgust, but notices that anywhere a slug has been, her wound has been healed. Her determination renewed, she continues.
Elodie follows the directions of the map, making her way to the presumed exit, but finds that there is no way down the sheer rock face. As some riders go by she screames to them for help, but the dragon appears and nearly kills her, forcing her to retreat back into the caves. In short order, she ends up in the cave we saw in the opening sequence, and Elodie finds a three broken dragon eggs, with the desicated corpses of the baby dragons that once inhabited them still in the debris. The scene cuts back to that opening sequence, showing us that before encountering the dragon herself, the king and his knights murdered the dragonlings as they hatched.
Elodie realizes that it was the king who had originally attacked the dragon, killing her only children, not that the dragon had been a tyrant. The only reason she had demanded three daughters was in recompense for the wrong that had been done to her. The deal that had actually been struck was that the humans could only be allowed to survive if, every generation, they continued to pay the same price so as to never stop feeling the pain of losing their children. The kingdom, however, has figured out a loophole. By taking princesses from other countries, they could simply mingle blood, fooling the dragon into thinking that the princesses were actual descendents of their line instead of girls that they only knew long enough to technically become part of their family before being sacrificed.
However, at this point, Elodie's father, having been overwhelmed guilt for selling his daughter, arrives at the caves to save her. Before he finds Elodie, the dragon shows up, killing the king's men and mortally wounding the king himself. The dragon resumes her search, and Elodie is given the time to bid farewell to her father as he dies, and he is given the opportunity to ask her for forgiveness, and to tell her to use the rope that they had used to enter the cave to escape. He tells her that Floria and her stepmother have a ship and are waiting for her. So Elodie forgives her father, and follows his direction, barely escaping as the dragon persues.
When the dragon realizes that Elodie has escaped, she begins to raze the mountainside, creating an inferno that is visible from the Aurean castle. The queen of Aurea sees the destruction, and takes action, going to the ship where Floria and the stepmother are waiting. She has her men kidnap Floria, cutting her son's hand and throwing her into the chasm in Elodie's place. When Elodie finally meets up with her stepmother and learns of Floria's capture, she immediately resolves to retrieve her sister, and she follows the same footsteps that she had taken before, returning to the dragon's main chamber.
The dragon, still set on getting Elodie herself and able to smell that Floria is of the same family as Elodie, sets Floria up as bait for Elodie, but Elodie sets up a distraction, drawing the dragon away. She goes to Floria, who has been injured by her fall into the chasm, and before they can get away, the dragon returns. Elodie takes up the sword her father had dropped before, and manages to position herself directly by the dragon's eye, determined to tell the dragon of how they have both been lied to. The dragon, however, does not believe her, and tey have a battle, where Elodie uses her ingenuity to trick the dragon into severely injuring herself with her own fire. As the dragon lay wounded on the ground, Elodie shows her the cut on her hand, and tells her that the dragon has only been perpetuating the violence that had so hurt her before, killing innocent daughters instead of exacting the revenge she had sought. The dragon tells her to end it, then, but Elodie refuses, instead retrieving some of the bioluminescent slugs and placing them on the dragon's wounds to heal her.
The scene shifts to another wedding, where the third and final princess is marrying the prince, unknowingly destined to become the last sacrifice. As the ceremony nears its end, Elodie, still in the rags of her own wedding dress, walks in. She gives a speech to those present, and tells the last princess to take her family and go. The queen declares that they are not afraid of Elodie, and she says that it isn't her they should be afraid of, right before the dragon arrives, killing the royal family and razing the castle to the ground.
In the aftermath, Elodie's stepmother is given rule of their kingdom, which now has all of the resources that Aurea once owned, and Elodie sails off on a ship, with the dragon flying beside her.
The End.
--------
So, what was wrong with this film? Plot-wise, nothing that would ruin it for me. It was a good story, and, like I said before, lots of fun to watch. But I was left feeling extremely empty. See, at its heart, this story was about the love and loss of children. The dragon was the last of its kind, left alone because of the unthinking cruelty of a king who viewed her as a beast, and cared not at all about the lives of her young. The dragon, though not innocent for all the dozens of lives she took over the centuries, was acting out of pain and loneliness, wishing only that that pain and loneliness be shared by those that inflicted it upon her. She was the one wronged, and the royal line of Aurea callously shunted their punishment off on the innocent and desperate. They did not deserve their prosperity, so the storyline had to lead to the breaking of that cycle, but the problem is that the film focused more on the retribution and that Elodie herself was badass than it did on any emotion.
And that's the big big thing. This movie left me empty because it was empty. Elodie was awesome, and she ended cycle of death, but we didn't know anything else about her. We get told she is clever, so that we don't question how her plans always end up working. We are told that she is capable, so that we don't question how she always manages to pull through. We are told that the prince is somewhat reluctant, but only barely, so that he doesn't seem too cartoonishly evil. We're not given enough to know the extent of his guilt, or enough to really know how complicit he is, or if it's really that his mother (who honestly is kinda cartoonishly evil) forcing the issue. It seems like we're supposed to kind of like him and feel bad that he doesn't want to kill these women, but it feels like it's only halfway suggesting the idea instead of developing aything. Elodie's stepmother is kind, but we are barely shown any of that, instead glossing over any real emotional connection in favor of action. She basically exists to give very heavyhanded foreshadowing, to tell Elodie when Floria is taken, and so they can say that Elodie doesn't have to be bound to royal duty after the death of her father, because there's someone else who can do it. And we're just told that Floria and Elodie are close. Floria seemingly exists solely as a plot device to make Elodie choose to face the dragon after her escape.
The glow slugs are a deus ex, somehow capable of healing life-threatening wounds on both humans and dragons in seconds, which seems to be just so they can pretend for a second that Elodie could really get hurt, but then have her in good enough shape to escape before her family leaves or the next princess is sacrificed. And also so that she can prove how badass she is by mortally wounding the dragon and having it at her mercy, but still have it up in moments, ready to come toast the real bad guys.
And Elodie's character is, unfortunately, also stuck with this same shallowness. She's intended to subvert the "damsel in distress" trope, and she kinda does...except that there are numerous times she is saved by pure luck, and the plotline of her having to go save Floria is just straight up doing the trope, just with a princess saving the damsel instead of a prince. I didn't even catch the names of the queen or king of Aurea, the prince's name (which is as bland as he is) is only spoken a couple of times, and the stepmother, who is arguably one of the more major characters aside from Elodie and the dragon, gets about 3 minutes of screentime and doesn't have a name that I can recall. Neither does the dragon, for that matter, though at least we get to see her more than the stepmother.
This is a story stripped down to its bare bones, and it's only as much of a huge shame as it is because there was real potential. I can't help but imagine how much better it could have been if given even another 45 minutes to help us understand and connect to our characters. I would have loved a real conversation with the dragon, getting to really feel her pain and experience the true cathartic acceptance and regret for what was done to her and what she did in response, instead of cutting away to the last wedding. I would have loved to see the dragon show any dimension of character other than anger and cruelty. I would have loved to see the prince wrestle with himself, or try to push back at all, or see the true struggle that Elodie's father experienced before he reached the conclusion that he'd made a mistake and needed to go save his daughter. Why did the ancestor king of Aurea choose to kill the dragon in the first place? It's implied by the end that the dragon was attacked unprovoked, but we don't really know. Was the dragon actually a hostile force that made them want to kill her, or was she simply there and the king wanted to eliminate a potential threat? Did no other princess ever try to talk to the dragon, espcially when they had a safe cave they could shout from, and the dragon conveniently seems to know when to immediately murder someone or let them speak for the plot? Why would the dragon continue to harbor such strong feelings for so long, and think she was truly achieving justice and exacting revenge when the humans were obviously thriving so?
And what do they plan to do from here? We know Elodie wants to travel and see the world, because she (once again) told us so, but is she doing that? And what of the dragon? We're told that she is the last of her kind, but how do we know there aren't any more elsewhere in the world? Is every gleeful murder of an innocent girl at her whim just forgiven and forgotten because she wasn't killing who she thought she was, and now centuries of hatred and bias has evaporated entirely, making her a friend of humankind? The ending could have been made better in seconds, should we have been given any kind of closure for either Elodie or the dragon in any way at all. Perhaps they're going off together to explore the world, to find out for sure if the dragon is truly alone or if there are more of her kind out there. Perhaps the dragon really does know, definitively, that she's the last, and so has decided to accompany the princess that ended the tragic cycle that defined her for so long, to keep her safe as she lives life the way she always wanted. Maybe the dragon has vowed to atone for her cruelty towards humans by going with Elodie, assisting the different peoples they encounter in their travels. Hell, even if a single narrated line was given that told us "and so they went on many adventures, and lived their lives to their fullest" it would be unsatisfying, but not as unsatisfying as the actual ending.
It just...it could have easily been vastly improved in almost every emotional sense. Caring about our characters, their motivations, their struggles, and the emotional heart of grief and loss could have made this a deeply moving film, but the focus was instead placed on the princess saving herself. And I get the desire to do so, the desire to subvert that trope, but a story can't be a full, satisfying arc with just that. It's the same problem we keep seeing with big budget companies and their attempts to cash in on social issues. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for any progress, even if it is largely a soulless cash grab, because any progress, however small it may be, is still heading towards an eventual shift in social consciousness, and thus permanent change. But this film wanted to get the brownie points for having a badass princess who doesn't need a prince to save her, and so they ONLY cared about that. It wanted to show off its budget and CGI, and "subvert" the trope, but it missed everything about why women might want a capable subversion of these longstanding, sexist tropes.
A capable woman isn't solely defined by the fact that she is capable. The point isn't to say "I can do anything a man can," but that's what this film makes it out to be. Elodie, and the entire story itself, is stripped of literally anything but what it needs to be to keep the plot moving. The story keeps saying it's about Elodie, and how she overcomes the obstacles in her way, but at the exact same time, it doesn't care about her at all. It cares about appearing to care about her story, and it's so frustrating to see all that potential wasted on such soullessness. It's like having every piece of a puzzle, but the filmmakers only bothered to put together the edge pieces, threw the rest in the garbage, and called that good enough. So instead of a beautiful, satisfying picture, we're left knowing that the rest of the pieces exist, but that they'll never be put in their rightful places, and that the beauty it could have communicated has been wasted.
So yeah, I liked this movie, at least in that I enjoyed the concept and the actual watching of it to a certain extent, but I wanted to love this movie. I hate how good it could have been, and that if it were given the love and care it needed, it could have been made into so much more.
At the end of everything, a story isn't just a spectacle. It's sharing and exploring our lives, ideas, and humanity through imagination and creativity. The beauty of fantasy is imagining what people would do when put into extraordinary situations, or at least imagining the extent of ourselves we wish we could be. A story like this one can be fun once in a while, but a truly good story, one that you remember and carry with you, usually remains because it resonates with you. And it just really sucks that Damsel denies its characters of their emotional cores, because when you eliminate the emotion of a story, the viewers are denied a connection to the humanity that makes that story worth telling.

Location name references in Breath of the Wild
A year or so ago, I went through the location names in Breath of the Wild and tried to find out which names reference previous things from the series. The following is an overview of everything I was able to find back then. Will be taking this region by region and adding some observations where relevant. I also think most of these names are the same in Tears of the Kingdom but I know at least a few changed, so all of this may not apply to that game. Of note is also that I am leaving out the more obvious ones like Gerudo Desert, Lake Hylia, Death Mountain and the Lost Woods as these tend to be well-known. This focuses on the slightly more obscure ones.
I do want to point out one major one though: the Hebra Region (ヘブラ地方). This is actually a reference to A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds and Four Swords Adventures. In the former two, the main name of Death Mountain in the Japanese version is ヘブラ山 or Hebra Mountain. In Four Swords Adventures meanwhile, there is a minor region on Death Mountain called Hebra's Hill (ヘブラの丘). But let's get into the more minor references.
Gerudo Region
Tumblr media
Arbiter's Grounds = Arbiter's Grounds from Twilight Princess
Spectacle Rock = Spectacle Rock from The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II and A Link to the Past. Many similar locations, sometimes with similar names, have also appeared throughout the series.
Koukot Plateau = the names of Koume and Kotake, who together make up Twinrova, smashed together. They appear in Ocarina of Time, the Oracle games and the memories in Tears of the Kingdom.
Mount Nabooru = Nabooru from Ocarina of Time and Nabooru Town from Zelda II.
Yarna Valley = Yarna Desert from Link's Awakening.
East Gerudo Mesa = Gerudo Mesa from Twilight Princess.
Overall, this region has few references, mostly centered around deserts and the Gerudo people. The only odd one out is Spectacle Rock, which is usually located in the north of Hyrule on Death Mountain.
South of Lake Hylia
Tumblr media
Parache Plains (テトラ平原/Tetra Plains) = Tetra (テトラ/Tetra)
Faron region
Tumblr media
Lake Floria/Floria River/Floria Bridge/Floria Falls = Lake Floria from Skyward Sword.
Martha's Landing = Martha's Bay from Link's Awakening.
Tuft Mountain = King Tuft from Tri Force Heroes.
Toronbo Beach = Toronbo Shores from Link's Awakening.
Koholit Rock = Koholint Island from Link's Awakening.
There is no real theme here, aside from the locations on Eventide Island referencing Link's Awakening, as the whole island is a reference to that game. This region also contains the only reference in Breath of the Wild to Tri Force Heroes.
Great Plateau and southwestern Hyrule Field
Tumblr media
Digdogg Suspension Bridge = Digdogger from The Legend of Zelda and Oracle of Seasons.
Manhalna Bridge = Manhandla from The Legend of Zelda, Oracle of Seasons and Four Swords Adventures.
Gleeok Bridge = Gleeok from The Legend of Zelda, Oracle of Seasons, Phantom Hourglass and Tears of the Kingdom.
Aquame Bridge = Aquamentus from The Legend of Zelda and Oracle of Seasons.
Mount Daphnes = King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule from The Wind Waker.
Lake Kolomo/Kolomo Garrison Ruins = the Lokomo from Spirit Tracks.
Forest of Time = Forest of Time from Oracle of Ages.
Temple of Time = Temple of Time from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. The appearance of the structure most closely resembles the Ocarina of Time incarnation.
The bridges here are named after bosses from the first Zelda games, which is a running theme with the bridges around Hyrule Field. The other bridges are named after bosses from the other NES Zelda game, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, however.
Kakariko Village and Southeastern Hyrule Field
Tumblr media
Proxim Bridge (モヨリ橋/Moyori Bridge) = Aboda Village (モヨリ村/Moyori Village) from Spirit Tracks.
Owlan Bridge = Owlan from Skyward Sword.
Horwell Bridge = Horwell from Skyward Sword.
Eagus Bridge = Eagus from Skyward Sword.
Batrea Lake = Batreaux from Skyward Sword.
Nabi Lake = Navi from Ocarina of Time.
Mable Ridge = Maple from the Oracle games and A Link to the Past (GBA).
Sahasra Slope = Sahasrahla from A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds.
Telta Lake = Tatl from Majora's Mask.
Lake Siela = Ciela from Phantom Hourglass.
Pillars of Levia = Levias from Skyward Sword.
Bonooru's Stand = Bonooru from Ocarina of Time.
Pierre Plateau = Pierre from Ocarina of Time and (maybe) Majora's Mask.
The island in the southeast of Hyrule Field is centered around Skyward Sword references, while the area around Kakariko Village contains references to helpful characters from throughout the series: companions and friendly NPCs. If I had to hazard a guess, this is a general reference to the Sheikah's and Impa's supporting roles throughout the series, as Kakariko Village is their home in Breath of the Wild.
Tabantha and Hyrule Ridge
Tumblr media
Kolami Bridge = Komali from The Wind Waker.
Seres Scablands = Seres from A Link Between Worlds.
Breach of Demise = Demise from Skyward Sword.
This region contains relatively few references. This is of note because there is only one reference made to the Rito from The Wind Waker, which makes sense considering the Rito live in Tabantha in Breath of the Wild. However, there were a lot of named Rito that appeared in The Wind Waker and only one is referenced in Breath of the Wild. This is especially notable as there are a lot of references to individual Zoras, Koroks/Kokiri and Gorons in other regions of the map.
Northern Hyrule Field
Tumblr media
Carok Bridge = Carock from Zelda II.
Helmhead Bridge = Helmethead from Zelda II.
Rebonae Bridge = Rebonack from Zelda II.
Orsedd Bridge = Horsehead from Zelda II.
Mount Gustaf = King Gustaf from The Minish Cap.
Mabe Village Ruins/Mabe Prairie = Mabe Village from Link's Awakening.
Romani Plains = Romani and Romani Ranch from Majora's Mask.
Rauru Settlement Ruins/Rauru Hillside = Rauru from Ocarina of Time and Tears of the Kingdom and Rauru Town from Zelda II.
Crenell Hills/Crenel Peak = Mt. Crenel from The Minish Cap.
Thims Bridge = Smith from The Minish Cap.
Minshi Woods = Minish Woods from The Minish Cap.
Pico Pond = the Picori from The Minish Cap.
Trilby Plain = Trilby Highlands from The Minish Cap.
Here we see the rest of the bridges that reference the NES games. The eastern island and area further to the northeast in general contain many references to The Minish Cap (not pictured here is also the Trilby Valley that also references that game). Mount Gustaf to the west meanwhile is one of three mountains that references a king of Hyrule: we also have Mount Daphnes mentioned earlier and Mount Rhoam in Hyrule Ridge, which of course references king Rhoam from Breath of the Wild itself. Finally, the places named after Rauru could be named after the sage from Ocarina of Time, but it is also possible they reference the first king of Hyrule from Tears of the Kingdom. It depends on how much of Tears of the Kingdom's story was conceptualized when Breath of the Wild first released.
Lanayru Region
Tumblr media
Trilby Valley = Trilby Highlands from The Minish Cap.
Zauz Island = Zauz from Phantom Hourglass.
Linebeck Island = Linebeck from Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
Mercay Island = Mercay Island from Phantom Hourglass.
Molida Island = Molida Island from Phantom Hourglass.
Bannan Island = Bannan Island from Phantom Hourglass.
Goponga Island/Goponga Village RUins = Goponga Swamp from Link's Awakening.
Inogo Bridge = The Indigo-Go's from Majora's Mask.
Tabahl Woods = Tabahl Wasteland from Link's Awakening.
Zodobon Highlands = King Zora de Bon XIV from Ocarina of Time.
Oren Bridge = Oren from A Link Between Worlds.
Ralis Pond = Prince Ralis from Twilight Princess.
Luto's Crossing = Laruto from The Wind Waker.
Rutala River/Rutala Dam = Queen Rutela from Twilight Princess.
Ruto Mountain/Ruto Lake/Ruto Precipice = Princess Ruto from Ocarina of Time and Ruto Town from Zelda II.
Toto Lake = Toto from Majora's Mask.
Mikau Lake = Mikau from Majora's Mask.
Lulu Lake = Lulu from Majora's Mask.
Ja'Abu Ridge = Lord Jabu-Jabu from Ocarina of Time and Oracle of Ages.
Veiled Falls = Veil Falls from The Minish Cap.
Lanayru has a pretty clear division, with the western Wetlands mostly referencing Phantom Hourglass and the eastern Great Spring containing many references to Zoras and characters relating to the Zoras. We also see a few stray references to Link's Awakening and Veil Falls from The Minish Cap. This is notable because in that game, Veil Falls act as the source of Hyrule's water, which is also often the case for Zora's Domain whenever it appears in the series (and so too in Breath of the Wild).
Lanayru Bay
Tumblr media
Samasa Plain = Samasa Desert from Oracle of Seasons.
Brynna Plain = Labrynna from Oracle of Ages.
Horon Lagoon = Horon Village from Oracle of Seasons.
Talus Plateau (トロイワ高原/Toroiwa Plateau) = Talus Peaks (トロイワ山地/Toroiwa Mountains) from Oracle of Ages.
Lodrum Headland = Holodrum form Oracle of Seasons.
Tarm Point = Tarm Ruins from Oracle of Seasons.
Wintre Island = Woods of Winter from Oracle of Seasons.
Spool Bight = Spool Swamp from Oracle of Seasons.
Tal Tal Peak = Tal Tal Peaks from Link's Awakening.
The area around Lanayru Bay is a hotspot for references to the two Oracle games. The stray reference to Link's Awakening (DX) also fits this theme, with it being the other Zelda game for the Game Boy Color, as well as the other Link's Awakening references in Lanayru in general.
Great Hyrule Forest
Tumblr media
Upland Lindor/Lindor's Brow = Linder from The Wind Waker.
Irch Plain = Irch from The Wind Waker.
Rowan Plain = Rown from The Wind Waker.
Elma Knolls = Elma from The Wind Waker.
Aldor Foothills = Aldo from The Wind Waker.
Mount Drena/Drenan Highlands = Drona from The Wind Waker.
Lake Mekar/Mekar Island = Makar from The Wind Waker.
Lake Saria = Saria from Ocarina of Time and Saria Town from Zelda II.
Mido Swamp = Mido from Ocarina of Time and Mido Town from Zelda II.
Lots of references to Koroks and Kokiri, which makes sense as the Koroks live in this area in Breath of the Wild.
Eldin Region (a.k.a. Death Mountain)
Tumblr media
Lake Darman = Darmani from Majora's Mask.
Darunia Lake = Darunia from Ocarina of Time and Darunia Town from Zelda II.
Gorko Lake/Gorko Tunnel = Gorko from Skyward Sword.
Gortram Cliff = Gortram from Skyward Sword.
Darb Pond = Darbus from Twilight Princess.
Medingo Pool = Medigoron from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
Gero Pond = Don Gero's Mask from Majora's Mask.
Lots of references to Gorons, as the Gorons live here in Breath of the Wild. Don Gero's Mask is probably here because it is initially worn by a Goron in Majora's Mask.
Akkala Region

Tacet (2023) Ch. 1
Fandom: The Legend of Zelda Pairing: Link/Zelda Current Word Count: 3.3k Rating: E for sexual content
Summary: In their shared silence, she craves his voice. The distinction of hearing it is more than she's bargained for.
Faron welcomes its newest guests with all of the oppression that Zelda expects it to. The first sight of the Floria River comes into view as the sun crawls along to its zenith in the midst of an azure sky, and it isn’t long before the damp air is pressing up against Zelda’s skin, incessant and irritating, quickly gathering at her underarms and at the crooks of her elbows. Strands of cornflower are slowly adhering themselves to her temple as the stallion she’s been gifted for the expedition trots along the unevenly marked path. Relief seems unattainable.
The Princess had set off for the Spring of Courage without a lance in tow, and when she passed through the galvanized apathy of the castle gates, there had only been one, quiet soldier following in her wake; through a persistence that’s garnered more luck than her usual efforts, Zelda managed to convince her father that a smaller expedition would likely yield much more positive results. His initial recommendation of fifty men had felt far too overwhelming when he announced it— Zelda recalls the way anxiety jumbled in her stomach and twisted every which way so that she was nearly tossing up her feeble breakfast before the throne; but the thin tiara atop her head reminded her of its presence, and she struck the idea down in a fuller voice than her father had come to recognize. This should be done quietly. It hadn't been long before she’d wheedled the number so far down that the King was rubbing at his temple with exasperation, soon deciding, perhaps only out of spite, that it’s Sir Link and Sir Link only that shall aid her.
Zelda can accept that—after all, Sir Link’s daily routine already consists of an overwhelming dose of disappointment in her.
The sprawling canopies of the jungle soon echo with the strident call of birdsong and the prattle of a rushing stream. The copse begins to grow thicker, and for the first time all afternoon, uncertainty is gripping at the Princess’ throat as tightly as her fingers around the stallion’s reins. A flurry of cries tears through the veil of radiant green, perhaps drawn from a lone hog caught between some bloodthirsty predator’s ravenous incisors. She inhales sharply and sits taller, the taste of the jungle’s air sitting thickly on her tongue.
“Are you faring well enough back there?” She calls backwards in an attempt to shed her nerves. Faring, Faron, ha. She tosses the laziest of glances back at her knight attendant, catching just enough of him to find that humidity hasn’t left him entirely unscathed, either. He nods politely before his sharp attention is pulled down to where a vine crackles beneath his mare’s heavy step.
Zelda, for the most part, has grown warmer towards Link in the last few weeks. It’s hard to stay cross with the man who once darted across the dunes to save her from what ought to have been a horrible death at the hands of those who'd sought the blood of the Goddess, meant to spill it across the desert's sandy swells.  The hero seems almost indifferent to his efforts, as if he’d only prepared her a prompt afternoon tea; perhaps it’s his indifference that’s driving her a bit wild. Only a month ago, she’d hardly been able to look at him, each sight of his piercing stare and his long lashes and the damned sword on his back a blistering reminder of her own failures—but she’s far more embarrassed now, critical of herself for reasons that have more to do with the huffed tantrums of days passed. Perhaps her knight, given his nonchalance towards much more pressing matters, might also turn an eye to the juvenile behavior she’d once reserved for him.
Zelda draws her stallion to a halt to assess their location and drags a finger, gloved and sticky, across the map, running along a trail of blue dye as she traces the river southwards. “How would you feel about a quick rest soon?” she asks, her voice competing against the thrumming swell of the jungle’s mysterious strains. He has no objections, though she’s sure he’d never voice them even if they were to float across his mind.
As she expects, a small clearing just south of the ancient ruins opens up to them, and Zelda is sliding off of her horse’s stark white frame before Link has a moment to offer his assistance. She wiggles aching fingers and stretches her limbs, bends to feel the grass beneath her and raises her arms skywards with a sigh that her handmaidens might concern themselves with. For all of its uncertainties and in spite of everything that lurks behind the verdant curtain of foliage, the jungle is liberating. Hyrule Castle is far more oppressive than this.
Zelda’s thighs quiver as she sinks into a shady spot. Link ties their horses to a neighboring tree and is immediately on the hunt, eyes flickering from one dense branch to another before they lock onto the spiked husks that dangle from them. He launches himself up into one of the trees with ease, leather boots digging into the bark and thrusting him upwards. The fruit hits the ground beneath him with a soft thud that pulls Zelda from her thoughts, and she squints to make out what he’s gathering for them.
“Durians. I’ve never tasted one before.”
He turns and disarms her with the gentlest of smiles, but he’s quickly scaling another bole for more. When Link is satisfied with the pounds of durians he’s tugged from their perch, he shovels them into a bag and rests them neatly among their belongings. More weight for his mare, but they don’t have too much further to go—hardly an inconvenience for an animal as determined as the regal sorrel that gives Zelda’s own dignified thoroughbred a run for his money. Epona, she’s called, and she wonders if Link’s given her such a strong name all on his own or not—before her near death experience, she wouldn’t have thought considered asking purely out of spite: she’s a little too embarrassed to do so now, doesn’t want to feel her face grow hot when he wiggles his way out of a response with a shrug.
The reprieve ends far too quickly and they’re soon descending into the heart of the jungle, equine footsteps surprisingly gentle as they maneuver through tendrils of vine and root running along the small palisades that line the Dracozu River. Zelda peeks over the cliff to find the body of water rushing by—wonders what it might be like to pitch herself into it for the quickest, most peculiar of moments. She finds herself wondering if Link would jump headfirst after her, scold her afterwards— and what would that be like? To find herself embroiled in his admonishment?  She ponders such a curious thing, temptation flickering in her eyes before she’s shaking the ridiculous thought away.
The river winds and bends, and just as the massive stone monument comes into view, one of the region’s hallmark showers quickly rolls in and sends rain clattering off of the trees, blotting the sun out with pale gray. The horses skid across wet stone as they draw nearer to the Spring. Zelda’s never seen it in person, and the sight of the structure stitches a soft gasp tightly to her larynx—it’s large, ancient stone cut to resemble a serpent’s unhinged jaw. When both sets of leather boots are firmly planted on the slickened ground, Link racks up the horses as Zelda glides through the two, protruding fangs that hang from the structure's mouth.
While Zelda ogles the craftsmanship, Link tends to the housekeeping duties that come with an expedition, and their campsite is fully set up by the time she’s done inspecting the architecture—he’s pitched the small tent that will house her that evening, a safe distance from where the he’s arranged for the campfire to be, and just beyond that, his own bedroll sits unfurled. She wishes he’d let himself stretch out upon it, settle in for a cat nap while she attends to her duties—she knows he won’t; he’ll stand for hours instead, his hands resting on the hilt of the Master Sword while his focus drives hard into whatever looms before him. Sometimes, when she hesitates between beseeching thoughts, she wonders if he ever bends his knees or shakes sleepy limbs out or rolls his neck. Wonders what crosses his mind in the silence—wonders if he ever lets the thoughts grow curious in the ways any normal man might. Heat quickly colors Zelda’s cheeks; what a foolish thought—of course he doesn’t. Link is as much of a statue as the figure set deeply against the spring.
For all of the communication issues between the Princess and her knight attendant, they move fluidly together. Link pulls neatly folded fabric from her pack, her prayer dress nothing but a small patch of cream with gold jewelry perched upon it when he hands it off to her. It’s hardly out of his grasp before he’s wheeling around, offering her as much privacy as he can afford. She doesn’t have to worry, really—she knows he won’t dare to sneak a glance, and yet meadow green eyes affix themselves to his back, run along the slope of his shoulders to see if she can catch a flicker of movement as she trades leather for silk, gloves for golden bracelets. When she’s ready, the Royal Crest up against her throat and inflexible around her wrists, she sets her belongings aside and draws nearer to the water’s edge.
“Well…” she starts with a sigh, her voice reverberating off the stone. “Let’s begin.”
******
Dusk stains the jungle with jagged shadows as the sun dips below the horizon, and Zelda is still waist deep in the tepid waters of the Spring when she hears the first scrape of steel against flint. It only takes a few clicks before a small flame is licking up from a patch of firewood, and she opens her eyes to find space doused in soft saffron, the Goddess statue’s wistful smile now far more sinister beneath the quavering bloom of the campfire.
The last two hours have been lost to the divine thoughts that percolate her mind, but the Goddess ignores every one that Zelda has prepared for her– those same, echoed thoughts that bore no results during the hours already spent in the Temple of Time. Zelda will not admit, not even to Impa once she returns home, that the last few traces of prayer have dissolved into nothing but a series of silent pleas: the Princess of Hyrule ends her session begging for a guidance that’s she expected to have secured long ago, as though it ought to have already been marked in a blueprint of her soul when she first came barreling into the world as nothing but a screaming infant.  Perhaps it’s foolish to admit such a thing, but she’s expected this to…well, she’s expected this to work . And yet here she stands, exhausted, her limbs soggy and her dress equally so, with a grumbling stomach that demands attention. She exhales heavily and returns to Link’s side, and he watches her approach with raised eyebrows.
“Nothing,” she says. “Not a single word. It’s peculiar…don’t you think? I truly believed praying here might have helped.” She watches his eyes consider the words and for a moment, she thinks he might actually give voice to a response, but his lips twist in thought and he only shakes his head and shrugs.
“You have full permission to speak to me, you know,” she reminds him, her voice gentle yet firm.
He ducks his head and nods.
Link prepares a dish of mushrooms and simmered fruit that tastes inexplicably sweet and savory and peculiar. The cooking process, however, is less than ideal—the odor leaves a bewildered Zelda pinching her nose as she tries to place some distance between herself and the cooking pot, but the stone mouth of the dragon traps her in the pungent aroma. She politely rejects the dish he tries to hand off to her, but he tries, again and again, and when she declares that she doesn’t mind favoring sleep instead of a meal, he grows persistent.
“It tastes far better than it smells,” Link explains, his soft voice like a crack of thunder and the blue of his eye suddenly as torrential as the shower that splatters against the roof of their lodgings.  Pinned beneath his watch, Zelda considers that maybe he really is as handsome as the ladies of the castle claim him to be—no, it must be his kindness that has the tips of her ears burning.
He throws himself before blades and claws to keep her safe–he certainly won’t lie to her about this.
“Alright, then.”
It turns out that he’s right, and for once, she’s relieved to be wrong.
They eat in silence, as anticipated, save for an exclamation that durian tastes much more enjoyable than she’s expected it to. Zelda is far too exhausted to try and coax any genuine conversation from him; she finds herself turning over her pleas to the Goddess again and again, wondering if she misspoke. Wondering if she had done something to cross her long ago, long before the endless evenings of prayer ever came to light, long before that wretched fortune teller bound her to such a devastating prophecy.  She wonders what her knight attendant must think of this attempt; her stomach churns when she imagines her father’s expectant face crumbling into distress as she stands before the throne and delivers such news.  All lingering traces of hunger drain from her body at the thought.
“Thank you for dinner,” Zelda begins, her voice hardly audible over the small crackle of the campfire. “I appreciate it.”
She thinks Link will choose silence again, but a quick glance at his low lit expression tells her she’s caught him off guard. His lips are parted slightly and his forehead creases. He clears his throat.
“You’re very welcome, Princess.”
A small victory—but it sends drips of warmth down her spine all the same.
“Good night, Sir Link,” she offers politely. She doesn’t wait for a response–she knows she’s unlikely to get one–and if he speaks further, it’s drowned out beyond the flap of canvas that waves in her wake as she disappears into her tent.
*****
The stress of travel weighs so heavily on Zelda’s bones that she cedes to the night’s sleepy call without much protest. Her dream carries her closer to home, across the patch of wetlands, along the peculiar Pillars of Levia, over the settlement of Hateno further east. She finds herself summiting the Dueling Peaks, surveying the land, leaping from the southernmost of the twins and landing neatly in the plains below. Her feet have hardly touched the ground before the world is exploding around her, and when the blurs of blistering heat finally pass and the red skies melt away, there’s nothing but scorched earth left, the steely scent of blood and ash and the ache of shell-shocked limbs as they struggle to shake off hints of paralysis.
She wakes with a sharp gasp, forehead damp from more than just a humid night. Zelda presses a hand to her chest and breathes into her palm. Deep breaths, it’s just a dream.  She settles back upon her bedroll and seeks sleep out once more, but the soft rumble of something unfamiliar beyond the tent tugs her up.
Zelda clutches the edge of the bedroll as she cranes startled ears forwards.
It happens again—a low murmur among the jungle’s sleepy trills. Nocturnal voices chitter and hum, but above them all something grumbles: a moan, a sigh. A whine.
Is that…?
It withers away, dissipates into nothing before it’s replaced by the unmistakable rattle of sleep lodged in a throat, a small crackle fraying the edges of his voice before a heavy sigh shoots out from his nostrils. And then, another hum, and the rustle of his bedroll as he moves atop it before another sound breaks free from his drowsy lips. It’s a rather high pitch, Zelda thinks. She's never known her knight’s voice to be stentorian or grandiose in any way, but she doesn’t know what to make of these sounds. She hardly realizes that the corners of her mouth are turning up with glee.
“—oh,” he breathes.
An oh ! Hardly a word, but it will be enough ammunition to tease him with once morning dawns. Perhaps she might convince him to open up with this newfound knowledge. Just a word, she’ll tease before she tries to make him guess just exactly what it is that he whispers into the night. She’s already giddy at the prospect.
Zelda can’t help herself—she wants a visual to help with her recollection in the morning. She pokes her head through the tent’s opening and finds his supine form exactly where she expects him to be, half illuminated upon his bedroll by moonlight streaming in through the slotted stone above. She squints and makes out his fingers twitching gently atop the bedding, his chest rising in a short shudder as his head lolls to the side with a non-committal hum. He inhales sharply through parted lips. A small grunt. And then another word, jagged and delivered as a harsh whisper:
“ F…fuck .”
Zelda nearly chokes on an abrupt gasp before she's clapping a hand across her mouth in shock. It’s spoken so clearly that she’s suddenly panicked that he’s speaking to her directly through the tent. And then she’s panicking for other reasons: first, because the sound of an expletive of all things in her stalwart knight’s tone is more than enough to send distress signals rippling through her body, and second, because it thrills her in a way that her instincts deem as far too unseemly for the Princess of Hyrule. It’s as though he’s taken that scandalous word, traced her lips with it and forced it into her mouth, dangled it on her tongue before pushing it so far down that it anchors itself in the pit of her stomach. She replays the sound in her mind, again and again, and with each repetition the aftershock grows more and more daunting
It’s all over so quickly. The jungle draws to a hush—the creatures of the night must catch wind of her heartbeat pounding against her ribcage. Zelda doesn’t know how long she sits at the tent’s opening, on her knees, waiting for more, and soon his soft breathing—the sleepy inhalations that she actually does recognize— are floating across to her. She can only draw one assumption: her knight has had a rather… indecent dream. Vulgar and whining, crass and needy. Oh Goddess, he is just a man after all, isn’t he? A man with simple needs, primal needs, like any other man. She’s made the mistake of craving his voice and the Goddess has punished her with more than she's bargained for.
Something quickly swells in her, and when it settles, she's left with an unfamiliar thought peering over the edge of her mind, blinking up at her, waiting for her approval before it spills over entirely. Zelda shakes the thought from her head and darts back across the bedroll, but even weighted with sleep something in her body burns, her blood singing her veins and an impending storm rumbling to life inside of her.
No, she will most definitely not be mentioning this in the morning.

“Morax, there’s something I want to show you.”
He sat up a little straighter at the sound of Leraje’s voice. “Of course, Leraje. Come in.”
She stepped around the door, and he waited a moment to look up at her, to give her a moment when he could hear she was walking with some hesitation.
But when he did look up, he couldn’t help the little gasp that left him, the drop of his jaw that exposed his fangs. “Leraje…”
She was blushing now. “You asked if I had a human form, so I’ve been spending this time trying to manifest it with long-term stability.”
“And you did it.”
“I did it!” she said with a smile.
He rose from his chair, playing with the ends of her hair, twirling it around a claw. It was so long; her coat of fur was on the longer side, so he supposed long tresses made sense.
Her tail swayed behind her, wrapping loosely around her thigh, and his eyes glid up to the flicking ears nestled in her hair.
“You kept the ears and tail,” he remarked, patting the fluff at the bottom of her ear.
“You do, with your horns,” she murmured. “Was I not supposed to?”
“No, no,” he replied. “It’s cute.” He played with her hair some more. “I hadn’t expected this bronze-like shade for your hair. Your coat is… darker. Or is this just what it looks like under the verdigris?” He laughed quietly.
“A woman I saw on the mountain above Sal Terrae had hair this color. I thought it would be pretty. Does it look bad?”
He let out a soft hum, admiring her a little more. “No. It suits you.” His claws were still tangled in the ends of her hair, feeling its softness. When he realized this, he blinked a few times as if to clear his mind, and withdrew his hand. “However. Come here for a moment.”
He returned to his chair, and Leraje followed, watching him curiously as his eyes narrowed in focus and he conjured a length of gold—a little more difficult than producing Mora, but still within his abilities—and fashioned it into a long, thin stick.
Once he was satisfied with its thickness, its malleability, and length, he beckoned Leraje over.
“May I touch your hair?”
Her eyebrows knit, but she nodded, kneeling so he could remain seated. He gathered her hair up in his hands and twisted it carefully, catching strands on the stick and threading it through, securing her hair in a simple updo.
“There you go. I imagine so much hair loose like that would have been burdensome otherwise.”
“I was worried about it getting caught in brambles,” she admitted.
“Well, we’ll have to get you some leather laces to tie it up, to add to your collection with that stick. Rise, Leraje. You don’t need to stay kneeling.”
She nodded slowly, rolling the phrase around in her mind as she rose, but not in any great rush. She really didn’t mind looking up at him like this. She didn’t feel subjugated or anything of the sort, kneeling beside him; he just looked… powerful, she supposed, like this. He looked comfortable, above all. And more than that, like that, she could rest her head on his lap, and he could pet her hair.
She shook her head to clear it of the thought that she’d liked the feel of his hands in her hair, ears bouncing, but her hair staying secure.
Rex Lapis laughed. “Testing its sturdiness?”
“Ah, as a side effect,” she said with a little laugh. “It’s impressive. Thank you.”
“I’m glad it meets with your approval. It looks nice. But it’s simply augmenting and accentuating beauty that was already present.”
“Thank you.” She looked down, blushing a little. “I’ll be back later, as promised.”
“I look forward to our meeting then.”
He watched her leave his chamber, her tail swaying, sweeping behind her and lifting her skirt. He’d have to have other tailed Adepti advise her on clothing that accommodated her tail. He’d do it himself, adorning her in pretty silks, but his tastes in apparel might be mismatched with she was comfortable wearing, if the differences between his robe and the light gown she had on (had likely borrowed) were any evidence.
Not that he’d mind seeing her in a robe like his, better accentuating her form. He’d have to see what Menogias had to say about dressing her, if Leraje was amenable to the idea.
_
Menogias dressed Leraje well, taking her preferences into account as he designed clothing for her, but it appeared that Rex Lapis had been on the right track when he said fine silk. And everyone knew she looked good in green.
She was wearing one such garment now, the color of fresh grass. He was getting a good look at it from his spot with his head rested on her lap, once again mid-story. Her fingers rubbed over the patch of scales at his temple, and he couldn’t stop a purr even as he talked.
While one hand drifted over his skin, her other hand came up to partially cover her mouth as she yawned, exposing those sharp eyeteeth of hers.
“Am I boring you, Leraje?” he asked, laughing softly.
“No, no. Your voice is just so soothing,” she replied. “I’m calmed by it. The story is fascinating, though, please go on!”
“All right. So then Bosacius used two hands to lift the tree, and with the other—”
Even as he spoke, Rex Lapis was himself distracted. Leraje’s fingers were cool like the undersides of leaves, and it was good when her touch was making him warm. One of his hands rested under his head on Leraje’s legs, but the other… he was playing with a handful of pyrope garnets. The last time Leraje had seen a pyrope, she had said they were pretty, and now Rex Lapis was trying to think of how to give these ones to her. He’d produced them especially for her, after all.
While he spoke, Leraje looked down at Rex Lapis and sighed. This story really was captivating, but she couldn’t help yawning at how relaxed she was with him, and sighing in something like disappointment. Like yearning. She was thrilled and honored he purred at the brush of her fingers over his scales; she had taken special care to make her fingers soft as freshly-opened petals for this sort of moment.
He laid in her lap, he told her stories of the past when she asked, and unburdened himself with the events of the day sitting with her, clearly at ease when she was at his side. She just wished Rex Lapis loved her the way she had fallen for him. And so she sighed.
“All you all right, Leraje?”
“I’m… fine,” she said.
“You don’t look or sound fine.”
“I’m heartsick. Yearning.” Her heart was pounding—why had she said that?
He looked up at her. “There’s someone that has your heart?” His palm sweated around the clot of garnets.
“There is. He does.”
He couldn’t help the muted ‘hmm.’ A he. And she was sighing her way through a story about the yakshas. Could it be…? “Does he know?”
“I don’t think so. Or if he does, he’s trying not to outright reject me.”
“He would be a fool to do so.”
“You think so?” she mumbled.
Rex Lapis sat up. “I know so. Anyone who declined your company and refused your love would be passing on something phenomenal. I would env—I mean. If there’s anyone I need to talk sense into, let me know.”
She swallowed, eyes pricking with tears and ears flattening. “Morax.”
“What is it, Leraje?”
Now or never, she supposed. “Would you talk sense into a mirror?”
“A mirror? I need no practice to… I’ve been blind, haven’t I?”
She nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks as she laughed.
“I didn’t know, if that helps,” he said, joining her in laughter. “But I have been a fool. How long?”
“I don’t know. A while. I thought you would notice if I wore the hair stick every day.”
“I just… well, it’s not just good craftsmanship, is it?”
“It’s not,” she answered, fingers drifting over his scales again.
“Intuiting matters of the hearts may not be a skill I have, but metalworking isn’t the only thing I’m good at. May I kiss you?”
“Please,” she breathed.
He cupped her cheek and pressed his lips to hers, thrilling at the soft purr that exuded from her as she melted into the kiss. He purred too, lower and rougher.
When they parted, he remembered the fistful of pyropes and handed them to her. “These are… I made them for you.”
“Oh, they’re beautiful,” she murmured, “thank you. Can we make them into a hair stick? This one with a pomegranate on it?”
He laughed. “I think I can do that, yes. But for now…” he kissed her again.
Later, a few of the Adepti came up to him. “Thank you for ending our suffering.”
He looked at them, his confusion clear.
“With Grass Keeper,” Moon Carver clarified for him. “Watching you pine for her, teasing her without knowing…”
“This is the first time One has seen you not behave impulsively,” Cloud Retainer remarked. “But One is happy to see you two so happy, now that you’ve resolved the matter.”
Rex Lapis smiled. “Good. Had I known I had you all on tenterhooks… ah, well. It is my duty to ease the suffering of those under my care, no? Now, I have a more formal meeting with Leraje. Before nightfall, you may disturb us. After dark—” he let out an endeared laugh— “we’ll be preoccupied.”

For the character ask game: Dorothea Arnault
ooh, dorothea! i love dorothea but man i have written so little about her...
favorite thing about them
dorothea being a classically trained singer and opera star is my absolute favorite thing about her. mainly because i have an older sister who got her degree in classical singing and is like literally dorothea irl (she works in cybersecurity now and sings on the side, what a career path)
least favorite thing about them
no a-supports with bernie or ingrid :( like i get that ingrid is offput and made uncomfortable by dorothea's reflexive flirtiness and it's a compelling flaw in her characterization that she doesn't know how to "turn it off" sometimes... i just wish that at the very least they'd had an a-support where they could kiss and make up
favorite line
does it count if i just put down "every time she sings something" because man allegra clark just kills it
brOTP
as much as i'm disappointed that her supports with bernie only go up to b i do love the idea of her and bernie as platonic friends. dorothea being the first commoner friend bernie has made since the yuri incident just feels so sweet... i love how dorothea helps bernie get over that wall and escape her father's control so she can be a bit more adventurous
OTP
there are so many dorothea ships that i just love to death that i don't know where to start. dorothea x petra and dorothea x edelgard have a lot of the same appeal. after a life of having to rub elbows with the nobility and hold her nose while she cynically searches for a spouse she can tolerate who will take care of her when her beauty fades, she finds the pinnacle of nobility—literal princesses, later a queen and/or an emperor—and they love her not for her beauty or her voice but for her heart, and she loves them not for their wealth or security but for their hearts... she earned a fairytale ending she didn't think was possible
also! also! i love dorothea x hubert, which really doesn't get enough attention. i got their paired ending on my first playthrough of crimson flower and i love the idea of her and hubert operating a spy ring together out of her opera company. it'll always hold a special place in my heart
nOTP
i don't think there are any dorothea pairings that i just viscerally shudder at, but there are plenty of possible pairings in canon that just leave me cold. felix x dorothea is just kinda... there? the two characters never really feel like they have any chemistry between them, but they get a paired ending anyway. weird.
random headcanon
i didn't invent this but my headcanon is that dorothea has stretch marks. she was underfed and undernourished on the streets, obviously, but getting scouted would have given her body a sudden influx of nutritious food and caused a growth spurt that definitely would have left its mark on her
another headcanon: if you look closely at her list of liked and disliked foods, she dislikes every fish dish in the monastery. in fact the fish dishes are the only dishes she dislikes. since enbarr is a coastal city, you can infer that fish (most often quite past its recommended sell-by date) comprised a lot of the food dorothea had to choose from as a child on the streets. my headcanon is that she got horribly sick off of bad fish once and was lucky to survive
unpopular opinion
since i'm not clued into the fandom attitudes about dorothea i have to just assume that an "unpopular opinion" would be that every barbed insult dorothea throws at a male character is something they deserved, at the time
yes, even ferdie. her insults help him grow as a person
dorothea did nothing wrong. i'm just assuming that's an unpopular opinion in the fandom because. you know. that's what fandoms are always like
song i associate with them
youtube
one of the most famous arias from one of the most famous operas, "vissi d'arte" ("i live for art") from puccini's tosca, is a song i think fits dorothea very well. the eponymous character of floria tosca had to be at least a minor inspiration for dorothea!
tosca is a tragic story about a celebrated singer living in a time of political turmoil and caught between her lover mario cavaradossi, a painter with radical sympathies who has offered shelter to an escaped political prisoner, and baron scarpia, the corrupt chief of police who is determined to both capture the prisoner and seize tosca for himself at any cost... i'm sure a fe3h tosca au would be a pretty natural fit for a fanfic :P
I lived for my art, I lived for love, I never did harm to a living soul! With a secret hand I relieved as many misfortunes as I knew of. Always with true faith my prayer rose to the holy shrines. Always with true faith I gave flowers to the altar. In the hour of grief why, why, o Lord, why do you reward me thus? I gave jewels for the Madonna’s mantle, and I gave my song to the stars, to heaven, which smiled with more beauty. In the hour of grief why, why, o Lord, ah, why do you reward me thus?
favorite picture of them

_ONEINCHSWING
i like it when dorothea shoots lightning at people :) tosca would have had a happier ending if tosca could do that

𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭    —   INTRODUCTION
inspired  by :  prince philip (  sleeping beauty  ) / added inspo! , westley  (  the princess pride  )  ,  prince derek  (  the swan princess  )  , mirio togata (  my hero academia  ) , lysander (  a midsummer night’s dream  ) , jack dawson (  titanic  ), christian ( moulin rouge )
full name. philip nicholas charlemagne alexander charmont. faceclaim: d.avid c.orenswet (  future : j.ames m.arsden ) dob. august 2 zodiac. leo occupation. personal trainer at achilles gym. birthplace. ulstead, france. orientation. bisexual/biromantic song. beautiful city - hunter parrish. film. robin hood men in tights education. graduated walt university with a degree in history.  temperament. sanguine ( curious, impulsive, optimistic ) mbti. enfj ( warm, outgoing, sensitive ) alignment. chaotic good abilities. skilled in combat and with a sword hogwarts house. gryffindor emoji.  ( 🗡️ )
present
philip was sent to elias with his brothers by their father for their safety. they had come in disguise, trying to live out as normal people and told to lay low by his father but the charmonts are on the side of more notable royals given florian and philip’s time in the media.
he reunited with aurora, the girl he had met in the forest when he was eighteen and fell in love with. in a twist of fate it turns out that aurora and he were betrothed. they wasted no time marrying in a private ceremony after reuniting
a normal life is all philip has ever wanted and now he has been granted that with aurora. they live in a little bubble of bliss and while it might look selfish to others for philip to drop his duties as a prince to play house.
deep down he’s searching for purpose. outside of a prince, philip doesn’t really know who he is. from birth, there were expectations placed upon him. he feels as though he has not met any of them. mostly due to choice. he’s always wanted more in life. he wanted to be more, do more. who is he beyond the crown ? who is philip charmont actually to his core ?
he keeps the facade up that all is fine. philip is someone who would rather present that he’s happy to keep everyone from worrying about him even when he’s actually not okay. he does this because he’s been the mediator for his brothers for so long. in his mind, philip’s problems always felt miniscule compared to kit and florian’s. philip is in fact worried about what is to come.  he’s never doubted his skills until now. maleficent is powerful. philip fears he may not be strong enough this time.
he now has a job as a personal trainer at the achilles gym. it’s another piece of normality he’s collected. it’s also allowed him to begin being independant - earning his own way through the world and helping people in some way.
update 06/01/23: almost a year ago philip was cursed by maleficent with a sleeping spell. he was in a sleep coma for six months. it’s been a few months since he’s woken up. that doesn’t mean he’s processed the trauma of it. because of the institution he was raised that allowing space for emotions, philip has shoved down any feelings he has about the situation. he’s grinning and bearing it. faking it until he makes it because that’s what he was taught to do: smile and wave. of course ! this isn’t going to end well ! but alas !
past
tw: philip’s past mentions parental death.
the youngest of the charmont sons, he was expected to be just as perfect as his older brothers. however, philip was always wild. not in the same sense as florian was, but in the sense that he could never sit still. if you were ever looking for philip you would never find him where he needed to be. he was always out in nature, the stables or in town.
he doesn’t remember much of his mother her last few months. philip doesn’t know if that’s because his brother didn’t allow him to be around their mom when she was ill or because philip didn’t want to remember her like that. he only remembers the good.
he was close to his mother but not as close as florian. philip loves and respects his father but he knows that the king puts a bit more focus on kit given he’s the next in line for the throne. if he had to pick a parental figure he was closest to it would be kit. at times philip feels his older brother raised him more than their own father.
philip played middle man between his brother’s feud. he saw both sides and did what he could to ease tension in the castle.
philip was expected to be king of some kingdom. hubert was determined to marry off his sons. he had been betrothed to a princess in ylisse when he was young but after her disappearance it was broken off. leaving king hubert to find someone else for his son. philip would always turn away the girls his father had in mind for him. he wanted to marry for love not for status.
he never cared much for his royal status. philip was always gallivanting off to anything but his duties. he dreamed of a normal life. one where so much wasn’t expected of him. he wanted to go places without people knowing who he was or having these ideas about who he was as a person. he just wanted to be philip a regular guy. not philip charmont prince of ulstead.
their alliance with ylisse is what caused maleficent to threaten the kingdom of ulstead. philip fought his father on leaving. he begged the kingdom not to send them away. philip believed he could stay and fight. his father was weak, someone had to protect him and their people. it was kit who knocked sense into him and urged philip to listen to their father. he was sending them to elias for their protection. so he agreed to leave if only to ease the king’s mind but he wouldn’t leave without putting up a fight.
future
with being married to aurora, philip will have to learn to be king. something he never expected but something that was expected from him. it’s a new learning curve. in a way i hope it’ll bring him and kit closer since he’ll see what his brother had dealt with all along.
i want philip to realize that his purpose was right in front of him all along. he doesn’t need to go on grand adventures to make a name for himself to help and save people. although he shunned the idea of royalty for so long his status is what will help him be the hero he always wanted to be. using it for good and helping his people is how he will bring change. it will also i feel bring him peace to finally stop fighting with that part of himself.
lots of maturing for this guy. he lives in a fantasy and i love that about my sweet himbo but he still has a lot of growing up to do. it’s always been so easy for him to brush off his problems or not speak about them but i want philip to actually deal with his emotions, acknowledge them and stop putting others before himself. he deserves the happiness he fights for everyone else to have.
DEALING WITH HIS TRAUMA OF BEING RAISED IN THE INSTITUTION 📢📢📢📢

About the magolor portrait, I don’t think taranza and sectonia were always in florandia. I’m pretty sure they lived somewhere else, but then sectonia got ahold of the mirror. Then, she made taranza help her find forms to control to become more beautiful, which taranza helped with. Then, she controlled the queen in florandia and stayed there until she could control the dreamstalk(so yeah I think maybe magolor could have met sectonia before she entered the bee form)
Yes, I've been thinking that too!
My impression of what's going on in Triple Deluxe is that "Queen Sectonia" is queen of an empire. (Watch out, the rest of this may dip into HC territory!) I think that she may have started out as queen (or princess) of a much smaller nation, one that was either composed wholly of spiders or of spiders and other insects.
...I actually tend to think that at this stage, when she first came into power, she was still a kind and benevolent ruler. The kind of person who, while trained to fight and use magic, just in case, would never even think of invasion!
In any case, whether it was the mirror coming into her possession, or just being thrust into battle with other power-hungry nations, her little kingdom of spiders grew and grew until it amassed a powerful military of their own (they bring out cannons and siege-tower looking devices against you in the last stages) and THAT was the point at which "Queen Sectonia", totally transformed by the mirror, set her sights on conquering Floralia.
But Floria is not her kingdom and is absolutely suffering an invasion (or had been invaded and is currently miserable under the queen's rule) thus, why they sent the seed down to bring the hero of Dream Land up to help them!
I'm actually pretty curious as to what happens with Floralia after the fact! Or the remains of Sectonia's army for that matter! Taranza, as her second in command, could take control of them and what's left of the insect kingdom as some kind of regent, but I doubt he wants that.
So, Floralia is probably returned into the hands of her people. And maybe they accept the remains of Sectonia's army into their kingdom, as long as they agree to behave and stop all the fighting? Maybe they’re no longer an “empire” but an alliance of nations? And Taranza is a representative of the people that formerly made up Queen Sectonia’s army?
Anyway, yes! I've always thought that wherever Sectonia and Taranza originally come from is different than the sky kingdom of Floralia. Personally, I like to imagine them as coming from an underground kingdom BENEATH Popstar!
(One reason I tend to think that is the proliferation of jewels present in Sectonia's design and those of her forces. It might be fantasy cliche, but I've always associated having a surplus of jewels with dwarven cultures. And so I guess I see Secty and Taranza as being the equivalent of Popstar's dwarven race, while the people of Floralia are like Popstar's elves!)
And Magolor definitely stands a much higher chance of knowing Spider Sectonia than Bee Sectonia!  (Thanks for bringing this up, anon!)

So Damsel was pretty fun
I liked the costuming and props a lot. Damn, those masks....and a lot of those royal outfits!!
I liked the long line of princesses guiding Elodie, showing there were many as smart and strong as her, solidarity beyond death
I liked the design of the dragon, and naturally her voice
I enjoyed how the dress had its cons and its uses and was slowly deconstructed. That was quite clever. I did not like the final form.... The battle skirt yes. The super thin waist because of the stupid corset - when they dared make a shot of Elodie not being able to breathe...
I did not like the super heavy makeup
The beginning was pretty silly
I liked the parental dynamics. Nice lil subversion. I liked how Elodie had enormous believable grit.
I liked how she got out because her dad came back for her and she could make use of the opportunity because she had gritted the hell up
I liked how the wounds were right gruesome
I thought it was silly how she kept shouting and groaning and screaming when it was essential to keep quiet (didn't tell Floria to SHUT UP, didn't whisper once) but whatever
Interesting how there's all this ice and extreme anti burn in the dragon cave. I liked the glowing slugs that healed you right up
It felt like a classic kids adventure story where she beat challenge after challenge
Somehow they sold the ...well what to call it. They sold it, not killing the dragon.
The prince was also very well done
Whats not to like, except the horrible make-up. And the final dress form. And the pretty weak end (the soft fade to the boat.. ya)
DID NOBODY TRY TO TELL THE DRAGON: YOUVE BEEN TRICKED IDIOT!!! before??? Like once she hears it 20 times she might start to question things
All those princesses were crazy pretty. Loved all the casual variety in people in this weird fantasy world. The cast was insane anyway. They wanted something fun to do.

Parents and/or ancestors of the muses (at least, parents and ancestors who have been mentioned, not noting children of parents who are already muses)
Armok Ailbhe– Noted to have been raised by an aging Hylian couple, who have since passed. Bryn Llwyd– Said to have been raised by a poor family. Delphine Langlois– An isekai! We don't know SHIT about her parents, they're from Terra. Erdan Tiltathana– We know nothing of his parents. Gateni Yaeldrin– Her parents are Hylian nobles who hold land, but that's all we know. Gwyn Dubhscian– Came from an abusive family that she ran away from. Halcyon Nivard– Daughter of Reynard Nivard and Lisa Kuma. Reynard was an infamous pirate captain who was caught and hanged; Lisa took over as interim captain until Halcyon was ready to inherit the ship. Isaac Michaels – Son of Ralf Michaels and Emmeline (needsmaidenname), the former of whom died in war shortly after Isaac's younger sister Connie was born. Lambda Blackscale – Second born daughter of Naivara Scathaith and Sheezrar Faenorin, the latter of whom perished in the razing of the Faenorin manor. (Wondering if I should add Valanthe Faenorin, Lambda's elder sister, as a muse; she is, however, a psychopath and a villain.) Leonard Edwards– Noted to have been born to farmers. Lita Arcuna I – Daughter of Reim Arcuna and Gazenir (needslastname), a Gerudo noble and Hylian blacksmith who are both deceased. Has a deceased twin brother, Meritz, who died around the same time. Thorn Stanton – Son of Alexander Stanton and Abigail (needsmaidenname), a former Hyrulean royal guardsman and a Gerudo outlaw. Will keep his lineage secret at nearly any cost. Raithyon Blackscale – Son of Tarhun and Tatyan Blackscale, who perished when the Blackscales' home Sableflame was destroyed by monsters. Also has a deceased younger brother, Mugrunden, who died in the same. Raven Allaway – Son of Devin Allaway and Rowena (needsmaidenname). (Twilight Princess verse ONLY: Notably, Devin is the son of Link Allaway, the Hero of Time.) (Age of Calamity/Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom verses ONLY: Devin is deceased, killed in battle when Raven was a teenager.) Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule – Stated (by mun, this is headcanon) to have been born to a noble family in Lanayru. Sandalio Ferro – Born to a family of knights pledged to serve the Liuvigild family as retainers; Sandalio left that line of service because the Liuvigilds are shifty nobles. Shanz Dinrel – Another isekai! We don't know SHIT about his family, they're from Terra. Okay, well, in some verses he is adopted by the Dinrels of Floria– John Dinrel and Guinevere Murray, and becomes a younger brother to Bryant Dinrel, Raelynn Dinrel, and Jason Dinrel (who is usually deceased, but I'm playing with not having him killed). In yet other verses, he's born to them instead of Jason. Taunch Kimbatuul – Born to frost dragon father Madrash Kimbatuul and Hylian mother Caomh (needsmaidenname), the latter of whom died of illness despite Taunch's best efforts to find healthcare for her. Vair Bhelthir – Born to Gildas Bhelthir and Lavena Glynn, who were both killed by a flame dragon that destroyed their holdings. Notably, Vair has a younger sister, Cara, who lives. Wulf Arcuna – Born to Reim Arcuna and Gazenir (needslastname), as Lita's younger brother. Tragically, his parents and older brother died shortly after his birth.
