My top Isekai/roFan webcomics (I have read far too many) (and will continue to do so)

Who made me a princess. Gorgeous art and gorgeous story.

The Fantasie of A Stepmother. Also gorgeous art, and a beautiful story. Focus on found family, with a smart protagonist. (I'm obsessed with Nora and Shuri).

The Wicked Tale of Cinderella's Stepmom. One of my favourites. MC wakes up in the body of Mildred, the mother of two daughters and her step-daughter Cinderella. The relationship between the girls and our MC is so well written, and the romance is *chef's kiss*. It's more Josie vibes, and has a realistic portrayal of aristocratic society. MC is a mama bear; don't get on her bad side!

Why Raeliana Left The Duke's Mansion. This now has an anime adaptation, for good reason. MC and ML are smart, and now writing this list I want to go re-read it haha.

The Perks of Being an S Class Heroine. This one is hilarious, and the plot and pacing is so good. It starts with a tutorial period with all the MC's as kids first, so the romance isn't central so far, but I love our FL and the plot and all the characters are interesting.

Wall of Glass. Okay this one is historical rather than fantasy BUT it is so good highly recommend if you want a more realistic portrayal of the class system (I think it's set in Victorian England). Our FL is a noble lady who gets a big wake up when her father sadly dies and their estate is bankrupt, so she has to work and earn money. ML is the opposite - he is a commoner who has worked his way up and hates the nobility. They first meet when she's a noble, then later when she's a governess. (If you happen to like the book North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell I recommend this comic & vice versa. If you like Austen then PLEASE read North and South!).

Villains Are Destined To Die. I absolutely love Penelope and Callisto's dynamic, and I really like our MC. They just work so well together. I like Callisto's sardonic personality. (Also, he's a major simp for her. Literally jumps blind into danger for her; and he feels safe with her because he knows she's got his back too.) CW for abusive parent/siblings - not physical, but emotional and neglectful, and I think the MC has an unhealthy relationship with food. Because of her abuse she is malnourished and has gut problems (mentioned in her past life), and when she's anxious/stressed she completely forgets to eat, but all of this is discussed in the novel. The fact that Penelope dismisses it as no big deal is questioned by other characters, such as our devastatingly handsome ML. The plot/world lore is hella also interesting.

Tesilid is some kind of unicorn student athlete who's good at both sports and academics. He's on the school team and at the top of the class

jk he's 2nd in class. Ailette is first.

Ailette starts off 1st year very smart but extremely unathletic. In their first sports day/festival/cultural equivalent, she and Tesilid are put together in a team. Ailette came up with the strategy and Tesilid provided the muscle for it to work (ie. for her to execute the finishing move). They win, but Ailette is embarrassed about how much she was struggling to keep up, so she tries to get fitter.

By their final year, Ailette's one of the scariest people to go up against in sports classes.

Tesilid watches her progress with warm eyes. He was already smitten from year 1. He just likes seeing her flourish and girlboss and be on top of her game.

(Hestio and Ephael might be on said team too in the 1st year, but they got disqualified/out about 3/4 through.)

Tesilid gets constantly taken advantage of by his classmates (asking for notes/homework/free lunch) and teachers (getting him to do their extracurricular admin work for them). Ailette whacks them for it. She gets a reputation for being his overprotective girlfriend ("It's not like that!!") (Tesilid, internally: it's not...? 🥺😞)

I haven't figured out Ailette's reason for avoiding dating yet but for Tesilid it's because he and the other 2 are being raised in an orphanage that is. very strict about religion. It's helpful for warding off Tesilid's admirers, at least. After the first time a very determined fan introduced themselves to his guardian, no one else tries to confess to Tesilid.

Home economics class... Ailette's homecooked food on the level of Gordon Ramsey... Tesilid's terrible tasteless food that he made with full concentration and furrowed brows and the equipment probably also breaks on him simply because he's unlucky like that.

Hestio and Ephael are free live entertainment in class.

In their 2nd year, Hestio and Ephael are in the neighbouring class. Tesilette's class constantly gets interupted by loud screams and shrieks of laughter and scolding from the next room.

Tesilette tutor them hard so they all get into the same class in their 3rd year. (Assuming classes are assigned based on test scores.) Hesphael have no idea why they're here in the same room as the other two on consecutive weekends. Can't you two have a study date by yourselves?????

Ailette is extremely serious about getting Hestio and Ephael into the same class as them because they're one of the few people she would trust as group members. Everyone else keeps freeloading off Tesilid !!!!!! Like yes Hestio and Ephael don't produce as much quality work as Tesilette themselves, but at least they care about Tesilid being treated fairly and with dignity! At least they'll make the effort and treat him as an equal and not as exploitable resource!

They graduate and then they get married and then they break Tesilid free of the shackles of his terrible guardians and birth religion (and get Hestio & Ephael out of there too while they're at it) and Tesilid is adopted into the Rodelines and then they get married again and then they lived happily ever after. The end.

The Perks of Being a Deus Ex Machina

So I recently binged The Perks of Being An S-class Heroine/ A Transmigrator's Privilege and I need to talk about it or I'll implode.

I apologize in advance because this is gonna be a long post as I can't stop hyperfocusing on it and I need to scream into the void ([tumblr]).

This series honestly has one of my favorite uses of an overpowered MC in a while. I've also seen a lot of people complain about Ailette being too powerful and how much it hurts the story. I've only read until ch170 in the webnovel so I could be wrong but I don't think that's really the story they're trying to tell.

Ai is our main character but she's not the correct main character. She's so strong and gets so much help from the system that nothing poses a real threat to her. I can see how that could be boring for some people. But she was never supposed to be in this story. It's heavily implied that if Tesilid dies in her timeline, the whole world resets again without her ¹ (under spoilers) and it'll be like her version of Ai never existed (Manhwa ch31). It's not just about how well she can survive, it's also about how well she can protect Tesilid. Suddenly this story becomes an escort mission. She's Resident Evil 4 Leon and it's game over when Ashley dies. Or more aptly, she's Gandalf, trying to protect the self-sacrificing Frodo as he journeys to Mordor. It doesn't matter how powerful she is, if Tesilid dies anyways. She can't just leave him alone to kill the big bad on her own, either - Tez dies from like 500 different causes in the original story.

In my opinion, the story doesn't really start until Tesilid's regressions start (which probably won't be until s3 in the manhwa). For some people this is understandably too long. But it's really only a power fantasy during the tutorial period; when she finally gets to meet with (1)17th Tesilid, she turns into a walking Deus Ex Machina. It makes for an interesting dynamic imo, since Tez's powers are so restrictive and he has little choice but to be a self-sacrificing pushover. He even goes so far as to tank for her when he thinks she's about to take a killing blow. On the other hand, she’s all-powerful with a questionable sense of morality. It's like if Ai was Saitama (another Deus Ex!) but he dies if Mumen Rider dies. You know it'll all work out when they arrive, but it's incredibly tense if they're separated. It's cool to read a story from the protector's point of view for once- to see things from their perspective as they try to keep alive the main characters always running around trying to get themselves killed. Especially since we basically already know that there's virtually no way for Tesilid to succeed alone. Ailette has virtually all the power to help Tez and she thinks she knows how, but the farther we get into the story the more we learn that she probably doesn't understand as much as she thinks. Does she know how to end the loops? Or that Tesilid can loop again to a previous iteration? It's a mystery wrapped in power-fantasy skin.

¹ When Reed repeatedly kills Tez before the end of the tutorial, the whole world resets. This suggests that time in this universe revolves around Tesilid and it doesn’t flow for others if he’s dead.

Thinking of how Ailette’s first order of business when the 17th round starts is to rescue the villagers and then rescue Terry. I didn’t think about it too much originally but wasn’t Ailette taking chances here that Tesilid wouldn’t make it before she got there? Like Tesilid maybe did in a sense not make it which is why we have 117th Tesilid instead of 17th Tesilid. Did she simply think she would have enough time according to her knowledge from the book? It’s true Ailette also does care about civilians, but I’m wondering if another reason she does this is for Reed’s sake and to prevent Reed from having killed people.
