hockey writing appreciation club part iii (part i here, part ii here) hi everyone!! you know what time it is! i've collected another handful (and then some) articles i've really enjoyed over the past few weeks! support good writing, support good sports journalism — with clicks and with subscriptions if that's in your ability/inclination! hope you enjoy some of these; my particular favorites in this batch are the pius suter piece and the coyotes story. as always, i welcome recommendations if you have them!!
remember that a "🔒" implies a paywalled article, but this is often easily worked around by entering your browser's "reader mode"!
NHL graybeards still find ways to make major impact In most any other field, Pavelski, at 39, would be viewed as someone who has much of his career ahead of him. If he were named CEO of a company, he'd be on a "40 under 40" list or might be talked about as the next great innovator. But when it comes to hockey and other pro sports? There's a belief that being 30 -- let alone 35 or 40 -- and still productive is something just short of a miracle. And for the record, Pavelski said he has not found a gray hair.
The Cyclist: Pius Suter’s clinching goal and the secret behind Canucks’ success 🔒 Although Suter still drives to games, he goes about town mostly on his bicycle. Most days, he cycles into practice on a racing bike with narrow tires; he did so even during massive February snow storms, to the amusement of his teammates, support staff and management. “It’s Canada,” Suter said, “you’d think they’d clear the roads! At least, I did. “Honestly, it feels like home. I played in Zurich, biked always to practice and games and I love not having to use the car.”
Marie-Philip Poulin and the PWHL have yet another landmark moment: ‘It’s a movement’ 🔒 But the building was still mostly empty, and still, for Marie-Philip Poulin, a living legend, this was a lot to take in. She skated over to the bench for an interview with the arena hostess that would go live in the building, and the first question was about how she felt in this moment, in this environment, on this stage, about to play a professional hockey game in her native Quebec in front of this many people. In front of this many of her people.
What really happens during NHL intermissions? The naked truth 🔒 When the clock strikes zero at the end of each period, we watch the teams filter off the ice, down a tunnel and into their respective locker rooms. But what’s really going on back there while we hit the restroom, maybe grab a $14 beer and $7.50 hot dog?
Inside the Coyotes' stunning move from Arizona to Utah In April, Smith posted to X asking fans for team name suggestions should the NHL ever come to Utah. That was a huge tell to the hockey world: This was happening. But back in Arizona, players and coaches were still in the dark. For all they knew, there was a plan in motion that would keep them in Phoenix. What they didn't know was how little faith the NHL had in it being executed by this ownership group, and how badly it wanted the Coyotes out of Mullett Arena.
What makes Macklin Celebrini the next big thing in hockey On a Saturday night in January 2023, the Golden State Warriors had an off night in Chicago. Draymond Green didn't want to go to dinner or out on the town. He had another idea: going to the suburbs to watch junior hockey. "How often do you get an opportunity to see Sidney Crosby at 17?" Green reasoned. The next big thing in hockey is Macklin Celebrini, the unanimous No. 1 prospect of the 2024 NHL draft class. Celebrini is also the son of Rick Celebrini, the Warriors vice president of player health and performance.
Pursuit of perfection drives Kucherov's intense summer training If you walk through the sliding glass doors and into the lobby of TGH Ice Plex on a weekday morning, it's quiet. You may find a staff member answering a call at the front desk or spot an employee from the pro shop carrying cardboard boxes filled with equipment. That's about it. But if you walk to the right and peek out to the south rink, you'll probably find Nikita Kucherov.
How use of analytics is part of Colorado Avalanche’s secret sauce: “Numbers are unemotional” One of the key aspects of how Bednar and his staff help the players connect with and absorb the data is not the numbers themselves. Most players aren’t going to care if tonight’s opponent is creating X shots in the slot area on the power play per game, or Y shots from the right faceoff circle. But tell them a team is fourth in the league in one category or 30th in another — and then supplement it with video clips — and the information hits home.
What are NHL series supervisors? How unseen officials help teams, league coordinate during playoffs 🔒 The supervisors travel as the series shifts cities. They are there whenever the clubs need to meet. The other important part of their job is meeting with referees and linesmen, who rotate from series to series. Supervisors fill them in on what’s been happening in the series — what the temperature of it is, the issues each club has raised in meetings, etc. That gives the refs a sense going in of what to look for that night in the game.
Connor Bedard's first season has lived up to expectations When the 18-year-old's jaw broke, everything he had been building for was cruelly interrupted. "It's not fun not to play," Bedard said. "I was dying to get back." One week after surgery to repair his fractured jaw, Bedard convinced trainers to allow him to skate. Solid foods were out, so he drank as many soups, smoothies and supplements as his body would allow, desperate not to lose weight.

Here’s another example for SheWon

June 10, 2023
A trans-identified male has once again taken first place in the women’s category of a North Carolina cycling tour, adding to his expansive list of victories against female cyclists.
The Belgian Waffle Ride North Carolina took place today in Hendersonville, and participating in the women’s division was biological man Austin Killips. Killips, 27, identifies as a “woman” and has been competing in women’s cycling events since 2022, as reflected by his pro cycling profile.
During the 137-mile race today, Killips quickly took the lead in the female division, as demonstrated by highlights offered by Unroad UNLTD through Instagram.
Immediately after the race began, Killips seized first place, leading Unroad UNLTD to report only on the second and third place female riders for the first two updates in their monitoring of the women’s category.
Tumblr media
At the 13th mile mark, Killips was confirmed as having been in first place, with two female athletes — Paige Onweller and Flavia Oliveira — maintaining their second and third spots respectively.
During miles 55 through 59, Killips, Onweller, and Oliveira were grouped together with no concrete placing, and, shortly after and for a brief period of time, Onweller managed to claim the first place position.
But by mile 108, Killips had effortlessly slipped back into first place, and had begun to place significant distance between himself and the female riders. Nearing the finish line, Killips had a 5-minute head on his competitors.
While rolling through the finish line, the race commentator declared Killips had taken a “huge win.” No competitors appeared to be immediately behind him in the short clip uploaded to Instagram.
The race has since confirmed that Paige Onweller and Flavia Oliveira placed second and third respectively.
Tumblr media
Unroad UNLTD announcers referred to Killips as a “female” and a “woman” throughout their check-ins.
This is not the first time Killips has placed first in a women’s race.
In May, Reduxx reported that Killips had placed first in the Tour of the Gila, an internationally known top-tier cycling competition. Notably, the 2022 Tour was the first in the competition’s history where the prize money for both the male and female categories was equal. But following Killips’ win, two biological males walked away with the prize pots.
Disturbingly, Killips had previously been accused of attempting to push female cyclist Hannah Arensman off the racing course at the UCI Cyclocross National Championships in December of 2022.
One Twitter user shared a video of the incident that shows Killips trying to “put Arensman into the tape.” The user said it was one of at least three such attempts to push her off course, but the only one recorded on video, and had said Killips should have been disqualified for that move alone.
Tumblr media
Arensman, who was a 35-time winner in cyclocross racing, retired from the sport shortly after the controversy surrounding Killips attempting to push her off of the track during a women’s competition.
Arensman shared that she felt as though racing directly against male cyclists in women’s events had become so discouraging that she decided to end her cycling career.

L3Harris' advanced electronic warfare (EW) Viper Shield set is proving that it is more than up to the challenge. During the recent Drop 2 integration event at the Lockheed Martin Systems Integration Laboratory, the Viper Shield demonstrated full radio frequency compatibility with the APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar aboard the F-16.
The tests included continuous exposure of the Viper Shield with APG-83 energy for more than 12 hours to test whether radar pulses would interfere with the functionality of the EW assembly. The test proved the ability of the Viper Shield to filter signal processing streams from APG-83 radar pulses without any performance impairment.
In short, the Viper Shield passed the test and demonstrated perfect interoperability, which means that the customer will enter the battlefield protected by the most advanced EW and radar features available.
“Situational awareness is essential to the success of the mission, especially in highly dynamic and unpredictable situations,” said Patrick Creighton, vice president and general manager of L3Harris Electronic Defensive Solutions. "When these two systems work together, they are able to detect and protect effectively against threats like never before."
Tumblr media
The Drop 2 event marked the second interoperability test for the two systems; the first occurred in mid-2022, with equally successful results.
“These tests continue to highlight the advanced capabilities of the Viper Shield and the ability to smoothly integrate with the on-board systems of the F-16,” Creighton said. "All this results in more effective missions in the coming decades."
The success of Viper Shield is already spreading around the world, with several international partners already committed to the system, and many other air services around the world also involved in discussions about Viper Shield.
Introduced in 2021, the Viper Shield EW was custom designed to provide EW protection and offensive features in the fourth-generation Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72 multifunction aircraft. Software-defined technology components create a virtual electronic shield around the aircraft, revealing digital radar threats and providing robust countermeasure capabilities in a fully integrated and internally assembled system.
With lower life cycle costs, easier upgrades, greater reliability and reduced weight, the Viper Shield sets a new industry standard as the highest performance, lower risk and most cost-effective EW system for advanced F-16.

GIGA Pro Gym's Team - Does anyone know how to do what they say they want to do?
Presented here are the bios from their website (as of the end of June 2023). I am going to flag what I want you to look for... who here has the technical background to run a multimedia platform. Or are they a marketing person who might have worked in media. I'm going to emphasis these are direct quotes. I'm changing nothing.
I also want to point out that Fox's "early career includes Summer Olympic TV broadcast coverage" is that she was a group VP for Time Warner Cable in the early 2000s. And "start up launches for pro-cycling and senior tennis" still doesn't name what these enterprises are, we've been unable to identify what they might be among non-defunct entities.

Huawei Watch GT 4: a stylish new entry in South Africa’s wearable market
Tumblr media
Huawei has launched its latest addition to the South African smartwatch market, the Watch GT 4. Local tech aficionados first got a glimpse of this eye-catching wrist candy back in May when it featured as a side attraction at the Chinese tech titan’s launch of its flagship smartphones, the P60 Pro and Mate X3.
But the new watch was front and centre at yesterday’s official unveiling at the Hazendal Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands, a suitably swanky venue for a device aimed at tech enthusiasts and style-conscious consumers alike.
Design and aesthetics
Huawei describes the Watch GT 4 as a ‘Fashion-Forward’ wearable, which aims to seamlessly blend technology with fashion. Available in two sizes, 46mm and 41mm, the watch offers distinct design variations to cater for a variety of wrist sizes and fashion tastes.
The 46mm variant boasts an octagonal design, reminiscent of classic timepieces, and is available in three colorways: classic brown leather strap, rainforest green GMT, and a black rubber strap. The 41mm model showcases a sleek pendant design, available in two-tone piano key bracelet, Milanese bracelet, and white leather strap variants.
Beyond the default designs, users can further personalize their watch faces from a gallery of over 25,000 designs, ensuring that the watch complements their unique style.
Health and fitness features
Earlier iterations of the GT line did a solid job of blending style with robust performance in the health and sports tracking department. The GT 4 doesn’t disappoint in this respect, with over 100 workout modes, accommodating everything from mainstream activities like jogging and biking to more niche pursuits like Padel and eSports.
The fourth-generation watch introduces three major new health features: PPG Arrhythmia Analysis, Menstrual Cycle Management 3.0, and Sleep Breathing Awareness. These features leverage Huawei’s TruSeen™ 5.5+ health indicator monitoring technology, which offers enhanced accuracy in heart health readings, even during dynamic activities.
The GT 4 also boasts the upgraded TruSleep™ 3.0, providing users with comprehensive insights into their sleep cycles and respiratory health during sleep.
Connectivity and battery life
The Huawei Watch GT 4 is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, ensuring a broad user base. It offers quick messaging and replies, third-party application access, and an impressive battery life of up to two weeks, surpassing the staying power – at least on paper – of many mainstream competitors.
Pricing and availability The Huawei Watch GT 4 is priced at R6,999 in South Africa. Customers who register for the promotional offer will receive additional gifts worth R2,500. The watch will be available in stores from 6 October 2023.

Reflecting on 2023: Wins, Whoopsies, and Hopes
Here I am, once again laying bare my thoughts, hoping that this time, 2024 will be the year when I genuinely make some changes. That familiar feeling of hope, that craving for a clean slate – yeah, I did the same dance last year. But did I check off any of those 2022 goals? Nah, not one.
Yet, here we are at the end of another year, affording me the chance to cut myself some slack and truly believe I can turn things around in 2024. So, I figured, why not jot down what I’m thankful for in 2023 and own up to the areas clamoring for improvement in the coming year.
Things I’m Grateful For
Career I’m grateful that I still have a job. I hit the three-year mark as a junior specialist and snagged a new role within the company. My scorecard for this year is looking pretty green, and I’m proud of myself because I worked hard for it.
Personal I’m grateful that I was able to get myself a MacBook Pro 13”, Magic Mouse, and iPhone 15 this year. I also had the unexpected chance to visit Baguio City and Cebu City. I’m equally grateful for the opportunity to experience glamping at Casa Villanueva earlier this year. It was a delightful experience.
Financial I’m grateful that I was able to financially survive this year. I’m still blessed enough to treat myself to things I like every now and then.
Mental I dodged any major meltdowns this year – a small win for my sanity.
Physical I’m grateful that I have no major health hiccups this year – all organs doing their job.
Relationship I’m grateful for my boyfriend because he takes good care of me, and he does his best to be a good partner. I’m also thankful because we finally moved in together after a year of being in a long-distance relationship. I’m genuinely happy that we live harmoniously.
Things I Could Do Better
Career I had a sick leave galore this year - valid and invalid. I admit that I really am burned out with my current job, which is why I applied for a new role. Apparently, my lateral movement is on hold, and I’m not certain if I can still hang on to it. I feel generally tired of doing my job, and I hope I can improve my job fatigue this 2024 even if it means leaving my current position.
Personal I had a lack of self-care this year. Most of my days were unproductive and spent on aimless activities. I aim to cultivate healthy habits this 2024 to positively contribute to my overall well-being.
Financial I haven’t been really financially wise this year. I have credit card debts and loans that will get carried over this 2024. I also don’t have real savings. I need to confront this reality and break the cycle of debt by practising financial discipline, settling my outstanding obligations, and initiating a robust savings plan.
Mental Not so bad yet not so great. I always feel I could do better. There were days or weeks when I felt I wanted to die or I planned to make a change but got too overwhelmed so I procrastinated. I haven’t been really good at managing my mental health, and I plan to be proactive in addressing these challenges this 2024.
Physical I gained a lot of weight. I haven’t been drinking enough water. I need to incorporate regular exercise, a balanced diet, and regular water intake this 2024.
Relationship I have been acting clingy, childish, and lazy around my boyfriend while he’s busy studying or working. I need to balance these behaviours and learn to be emotionally independent.
That’s my year-end report. Fingers crossed for a different script next year.

Making Fire Sense on Monroe Mountain
At the start of October 2023, green conifers and golden aspen covered the slopes of Monroe Mountain in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest. Then, starting on October 9, these forests turned black as fire worked its way across the mountain. Flames and smoke were visible for miles.
Unlike wildfires sparked by lightning or accidentally by people, this fire was ignited deliberately with a fire-dripping device suspended from a helicopter. The burn (pictured above), managed by the Richfield Ranger District, aimed to reintroduce fire to the Monroe Mountain region. Fire promotes aspen regeneration and reduces accumulated brush and dead vegetation that could fuel a larger uncontrolled fire.
The managed, or “prescribed” burn also provided an opportunity for researchers to closely examine a high-intensity fire. Dozens of scientists from the Forest Service and other organizations and universities collected data from the ground and from the sky as part of FASMEE, the Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment. Scientists with NASA’s FireSense project participated, too, collecting data that could ultimately aid wildland fire managers in the future.
“Participating in the prescribed burn offered NASA an opportunity to test technologies and demonstrate their effectiveness in supporting wildland fire management across the life cycle of a fire,” said Michael Falkowski, program manager for the Applied Sciences Wildland Fire program at NASA Headquarters and lead of FireSense.
Tumblr media
According to the Monroe Mountain Aspen Ecosystem Restoration Project led by the Forest Service, the number of aspens on this landscape has declined by 70 percent in the past 200 years due to overbrowsing and a lack of fire. Beyond losing a scenic icon of autumn, the decline has implications for the plants and animals supported by the aspen ecosystem, such as elk and mule deer.
In the past, this part of south-central Utah would burn about every 18 years, according to Linda Chappell, a fire ecologist (retired) with the Forest Service. But a history of fire prevention and suppression has allowed conifers to encroach on stands of shade-intolerant aspen. Efforts to cut down the conifers has not been enough. Aspens need fire.
The photo below (top) shows the South Monroe burn on October 18 after the prescribed burn had mostly run its course. Puffs of smoke (not visible) occasionally rose from the still-smoldering hillside that day. In all, fire managers successfully burned about 1,400 acres (5.7 square kilometers) of forest. It remains to be seen if new aspen shoots will emerge from the blackened ground.
Prescribed burns do not replicate the 18-year cycle exactly. Fire managers have to consider things like fuel moisture, proximity to people and private land, and the amount of resources and time invested in each burn. But they have an increasing array of tools, data, and expertise to help them identify the best weather windows for conducting safe and effective burns, the places that would benefit the most from managed fire, and the best ways to minimize fire’s impact on people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aiding that effort is FASMEE, the multi-agency experiment led by the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station. The burn on Monroe Mountain in October 2023 was the fourth FASMEE-affiliated burn in Fishlake National Forest since 2019, among others across the U.S. West and Southeast.
Beyond the benefits for aspen recovery, the Monroe Mountain burn is informing over a dozen research projects. Some of them are ecological studies, such as an investigation to find out how bats respond to fire, led by Boise State University, and an assessment of post-fire aspen regeneration, led by the Tall Timbers Research Institute. Other projects will improve the models that inform firefighting strategies, smoke forecasts, and carbon and climate research.
“This is the perfect natural laboratory for fire,” said Jacquelyn Shuman, a forest ecologist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, and project scientist for NASA’s FireSense project.
High-intensity prescribed burns, like the one on Monroe Mountain, closely resemble wildland fires. But because the fires are planned, scientists can measure the landscape before the burn, as well as during and after. They can probe the soil’s moisture content, set up air sampling devices, and map the forest’s fuel load and calculate fuel consumption.
They balance all these tasks while staying flexible to just-right burn conditions; that is, a period of dry, not-too-windy weather, followed by a period of snow or rain that ensures the fire will die out.
Tumblr media
Three NASA aircraft arrived in Richfield for the burn. Their participation in FASMEE was a first for FireSense, a NASA project that includes field campaigns to evaluate and improve science resources delivered to operational fire agencies. One of the aircraft, NASA’s Gulfstream III, is pictured above at the Richfield Municipal Airport on October 17, 2023.
“The airborne perspective will allow FASMEE researchers to better understand fire behavior and smoke production, and hopefully someday support increasing the use of beneficial prescribed fire to mitigate fire risk, restore degraded ecosystems, and protect human communities from catastrophic fire,” Falkowski said.
Airborne data collected before, during, and after the burn on Monroe Mountain will help characterize the entire life cycle of the fire, covering a larger area than is possible from ground-based instruments alone. Data from the radar and optical instruments aboard the aircraft will be used to map the forest’s composition and the moisture in its soils and fuels. Researchers can also track how the fire grew, whether it was flaming or smoldering, and the concentration of smoke particles it lofted into the air.
“Like an angler might use a depth finder to help them decide where to fish, fire managers can use airborne data to help make decisions about a fire,” Shuman said. She noted that these data are a tool, supplementing fire managers’ knowledge of the landscape with additional insights from above. “The ultimate goal of FireSense is to improve the experience for fire managers and to mitigate the risk for firefighters and communities.”

From Athlete To Entrepreneur: Tessa’s NICA Journey
We created our Bikeflights Buck Up For Bikes Program in 2016 to support non-profit grassroots partner organizations developing the next generation of cyclists, but it turns out that sometimes developing the next generation of cyclists also leads to developing the next generation of entrepreneurs. In this guest blog post, one of our long-time Buck Up For Bikes beneficiaries, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), shares an inspirational story about a young woman who not only discovered a love of riding but also co-founded a new bike brand.
Tumblr media
Tessa’s journey with NICA began as a sixth grader at Ardis Ann Middle School in Bentonville, Arkansas.
She wanted to try a sport, but was unsure about which to pursue until her PE teacher, Tim Keith, introduced her to the after-school "Bike Club." Tessa initially rode her BMX bike, but found herself drawn to the idea of riding trails.
Seeing this, Coach Keith told her about a local mountain bike team called the "Lincoln Junior High Leopards.”  Her dad Saul was skeptical, worried that she might struggle due to her ADHD. After discussing the pros and cons with Coach Keith, Saul decided to let Tessa give it a try. He even gave her his own mountain bike to kick start her journey.
Instantly, she fell in love with mountain biking! Tessa participated in NICA every year, even serving the Arkansas Interscholastic Cycling League as a GRiT ambassador. She graduated from her high school team in May of 2023.
Tumblr media
Over the years, Tessa's time with her team made an ongoing impact on her self-confidence and well-being. Participating in a sport that she loved, and with a caring community around her, Tessa was able to manage her ADHD and overcame some of her struggles with schoolwork. She became an honor roll student with a 4.0 GPA, and credits NICA as being an outlet that helped her to focus on everyday tasks and achieve academic success.
Her dad came along for the ride, too. Saul earned his Level 1 Coaching license to help out the team. At practices and races, he used his mechanical skills to support kids and coaches with their bikes, serving as the “Team Mechanic.”
Tumblr media
Tessa knew when she graduated that she wanted to start her own business. When the opportunity arose for Tessa and Saul to attend GORP (Greenhouse Outdoor Recreational Program), a University of Arkansas program developing entrepreneurs in the outdoor recreation industry, they knew they had to participate. Tessa was the youngest entrepreneur in their cohort.
GORP introduced them to the ins and outs of starting a business, which laid the foundation for Tessa and Saul’s new project, their very own bike brand: XNA Bikes.

Technology Transformation in an Enterprise: Key Strategies for Success in 2023 and Beyond
Tumblr media
Welcome to our special interview series, where we talk to people who have been there and done that. In this edition, we have Ajinkya Mulay, who is the Head of Blue Ocean at AIQod. Let’s dive into his story, the obstacles he faced, his successes, and the important lessons he has learned throughout his journey of Technology based transformation.
With technologies like Generative AI taking the world by storm, businesses are under more pressure than ever to keep their tech up to date and use the newest tools and solutions as technology continues to advance at an unparalleled rate. Enterprise technology improvements are crucial for businesses looking to maintain their competitiveness, increase productivity, and simplify operations. These improvements, however, could potentially come with significant challenges, like budgetary constraints. We’ll talk about the numerous difficulties that companies encounter when updating their enterprise technology in this interview, as well as explore methods and best practices for handling these updates efficiently. Whether you work in IT or are a business executive, this debate will give you insightful information about the world of enterprise technology updates and give you the skills and expertise you need to compete in the fast-paced digital environment of today.
Why is technology upgrade important
As we all know, technology plays an important role in everyone’s life, and to solve new-age business problems, we can’t look at the same old technologies. Technology upgrades help in many aspects, like UI/UX, speed, and security, with fewer implementation cycles. Here are some examples of the cons of remaining with older technologies:
Scalability issues may arise for older systems built with monolithic architecture, but if your tech stack is updated and you switch from monolithic to microservice-based architecture, it will benefit you in a big way.
Building Responsive Applications on all devices and OS would have been exceedingly challenging as front-end design was only reliant on HTML and CSS. With less coding and quicker delivery, frontend technology advancements like HTML5, SCSS, Bootstrap, Material UI, and Service Workers (PWA) will meet these challenges very quickly. In short there are many benefits of being always on the latest technologies.
AIQod used to work on which tech stack earlier?
In 2016, we were using the PHP Laravel framework and MySQL as our backend database.
I understand that you were pivotal in changing the tech stack from PHP to Mean stack, how did you do it?
We were utilizing PHP and MySQL to build a product, as I indicated earlier, but after some time, it started to become a barrier when we tried adding new features and managing unstructured data. As a team, we made the deliberate decision to move the product to the new stack, but it was not an easy choice because we were not putting much work into the migration, which slows down the creation of new products. But after that, my technical team and top management held a brainstorming session where we identified the pros. and cons of this decision, We have already decided to use a MEAN stack after having shortlisted new stacks to migrate to, conducting research, speaking with users of the stack, and considering the product plan. We developed a migration plan after the team had unanimously approved and finalized the MEAN stack. Since we are switching from SQL to NoSQL, creating a MongoDB schema was the first thing we did. Then, because our PHP stack had previously been monolithic in nature, we opted to employ a microservice design for our backend. To determine how many microservices we should have when we begin migrating, we performed a logical breakdown of our monolithic architecture. And this is where my contribution comes in: I wrote the first MEAN stack program and structure for the platform on which we started migrating and completed the entire migration in a few months.
What are the technologies AIQod is working on/leveraging presently and how it is performing?
As mentioned earlier, currently we are using the MEAN stack as our base, which includes Angular 14, NodeJS, Node MongoDB 6.0, and Express JS. We also use Python to solve problems related to AI/ML. The platform also uses Redis for caching. We are pioneers in deploying our solution on the cloud (AWS, Azure, etc.) using Docker images on the Kubernetes cluster.
Tumblr media
How did you see the technology change in the company throughout the years?
The business never loses sight of technology. We review our stack every quarter and assess any improvements that have been made as well as the addition of new features in accordance with the product strategy. For instance, our front end is currently using Angular 14, although we were using Angular 2 five years ago when we transitioned to Angular we added other layers over the years, such as document digitization based on AI. In the product, we introduced a caching layer utilizing Redis and an NLP layer for categorization and Atlas for databases as a service and added an analytical engine to the solution. We recently integrated with chatGPT to generate automated code and new innovations in technologies will keep coming in where we need to think ahead and keep moving forward and adopting these technologies. We have been constantly on the lookout of technology changes and we were very conscious and planned the upgrades that we need to do on the platform this goes through a rather quick approval process to ensure bureaucracy will not cripple our platform growth.
What are the problems you face while changing the technology or upgrading the technology department?
Any upgrades are first uncomfortable, but understanding what advantages we will experience in the long run always helps. Knowing the new technology is the first issue we encounter when it is implemented, thus learning the technical details of the new technology might be difficult if there isn’t a team member with experience who has already worked with it. A major issue that will arise in the first few months after a technology upgrade is, in my opinion, the team’s acceptance of the change. To get around this, I first built a straightforward prototype with a folder structure. All the vital tools needed for this stack, which facilitates streamlined development and deployment, have been identified. VS Code Studio as a code editor, Postman as a rest client, Swagger for API description, MongoDB Compass for GUI querying, and Jenkins for creating CI/CD pipelines are a few well-known names. Other developers have held thorough sessions with the team on each subject and component of the new stack after gathering information alongside me, which aids in quicker adoption.
As you lead the whole tech team in the company, how do you leverage people skills for completing the task?
Every member of the team brings a unique set of abilities and talents to the table, whether it be expertise in client communication, troubleshooting complex issues, problem-solving techniques, or specialized tech skills like front-end, back-end, etc. Taking all of this into account, we examined the talent required and gave the assignments accordingly. Additionally, we offered training that will aid with task completion. We have developed a customized syllabus for each technology and divided it into basic, intermediate, and advanced levels as part of our organization-wide knowledge management program. Each level is connected to the assignment, and after review, the team is given access to the different course levels. This program’s knowledge foundation places equal emphasis on soft skills and technology.
What is the issue you faced while managing the team and how do you manage them?
Since each member of your team is unique, a variety of difficulties arise on a daily basis. The difficulty is that a new fresher who has recently graduated from college joins the team and needs to be brought up to speed in order for him/her to get valuable expertise and assist the business in solving this issue. We also give them access to specialized training materials and assignment links. We must always communicate with them at regular intervals in order to understand their perspectives and take appropriate action. We also have weekly 1-on-1 meetings to provide correct counseling regarding their daily routines, etc. People may find it difficult to focus on learning new, advanced skills at work, gradually affecting their performance. We attempt to hold workshops on cutting-edge technical subjects each week to address this issue and keep people informed.
What is the message you want to convey to the younger generation/upcoming talent?
I always tell youngsters that we must continuously improve ourselves and to achieve the same, we should read at least one blog per day about new technological advancements. We should approach every challenge with a positive outlook and vigor.  Any technological challenge must first be broken down into a plan of action that will ultimately address the problem more quickly and most importantly be the first one to take the step and be the leader in technology upgrades.
Conclusion-
In today’s fast-paced world, upgrading technology is crucial for businesses. It brings scalability, improved user experience, efficiency, security, and a competitive edge. By embracing technology upgrades, businesses can adapt to market demands, drive innovation, and achieve long-term success. Regular evaluation, improvement, and adoption of the latest tools are necessary for staying competitive and maximizing growth potential.

Editorial! The Guardian View On Marching For Gaza: S Ban Without Legal Justification Would Only Inflame Divisions
If the police are satisfied that a protest is safe, ministers should not be stirring suspicion and fear
— Wednesday 8 November 2023
Tumblr media

Political demonstrations are frequently controversial. Any issue that can mobilise tens of thousands of people is likely to involve fierce passions, and provoke strong reactions. In a democracy, those are insufficient grounds for a ban. That is why the Metropolitan police have resisted ministerial pressure to withdraw permission for a Palestinian solidarity march in central London this weekend. Sir Mark Rowley, the Met commissioner, has taken the view that Saturday’s march does not pose a threat to public safety. Downing Street has very reluctantly, and perhaps only temporarily, deferred to that judgment.
Rishi Sunak has expressed his objection in terms of the date. A rally on Armistice Day would be “disrespectful”, according to the prime minister. Whether or not that is true – and the march organisers have tried to accommodate such sensitivities in their choice of route – respectfulness is not a measure of public order. There would be few public demonstrations on any issue if the threshold for a ban were set at breaches of a prime minister’s sense of decorum.
The more extreme view was expressed by the home secretary, Suella Braverman, who has described pro-Palestinian gatherings as “hate marches”. That is a conflation of justified horror at the plight of civilians suffering and dying under Israeli bombardment in Gaza with support for Hamas and its murderous agenda for annihilating the Jewish state altogether. If Ms Braverman does not recognise a difference between those propositions she is not qualified to comment at all. If she is wilfully blurring the distinction, she is guilty of fomenting division and stirring intercommunal suspicion, making her plainly unfit for public office.
There is a mode of violently anti-Israel rhetoric that shades into antisemitism and then attaches itself to the cause of Palestinian solidarity. And it only takes a few hateful placards to worry Jewish people, who are still reeling in shock and grief at the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas on 7 October.
There is also a tendency for the malicious amplification of fringe views by propagandists of the far right who seed suspicion of terrorist sympathy around any humanitarian cause supported by British Muslims. The overwhelming majority of attenders at pro-Palestinian marches are there to express peaceful solidarity with Gazans and to demand a ceasefire.
These are complex sensitivities for politicians to manage. The correct approach begins with a careful choice of language and an aspiration to promote mutual understanding. It requires the disruption of vicious cycles of rage and misrepresentation that end up radicalising opinion on all sides. It means minimising needless political provocation.
Ms Braverman prefers the opposite approach, which is consistent with a pattern of treating any political situation as a platform for the advancement of personal ambition in the Conservative party. That is shallow politics at the best of times. In the context of war in the Middle East, it is reprehensible.
The police don’t welcome controversial demonstrations, while recognising that the law allows them. In that respect, the Met’s view that Saturday’s march should go ahead is more reliable than political interference from the cabinet. There are times when a requirement of public safety supersedes the right to protest. There is no evidence that the threshold has been met in this case. A political ban on pro-Palestinian rallies would aggravate divisions that ministers should instead be trying to heal.

October 17, 2023
I remembered that I woke up in the middle of the night last night and just coughed for a good minute. I need to stop smoking while I'm in this Covid situation.
Woke up feeling refreshed for some reason and I see that Ed hasn't left my side and waited for me to wake up so he could cuddle me. He's kind of cute for that. We got up mid day and I had some protein shake, yogurt, couscous and baked salmon. I'm hungry but not so hungry that I am dying to eat a lot but I wish that I'd let myself eat more but I have to be headstrong about my diet now. Especially that we'll be going to the beach next month in Morocco and I will have my perfect shirtless photograph for my birthday next month. I simply will.
Ed managed to sell my old S6 Apple Watch and that blue puffer from Zara that didn't fit me anymore and now he's trying to sell Snorlax. I think he'd be able to sell. He's kind of a pro at this.
I took a shower and went to the gym and did chest, biceps, abs, and some cardio. I went to the shops and got Ed dinner for later. Cycled home and put the lasagna in the oven. Ed had the lasagna while I had an apple and some mixed nuts. That's my girl dinner right there.
Emailed my old university and asked them when I started college because the US consular is looking for that detail and I don't want to lie before submitting my 160 form to get a US tourist VISA. I really need to do this ASAP so that I'll know when I could book my holiday trip next year.
Just playing Pokemon Unite now. Life's been good lately!
October 16, 2023
Woke up around 10am today. Eddie made me coffee and some breakfast and I did the dishes. It's quite an uneventful day. I went to the gym and did traps, delts, abs, bi/triceps and some cardio. Went to the shops and bought some food. Still feeling sick but no fever recently. Just this annoying cough. We booked our Morocco trip next month for my birthday and I couldn't be more happier!
