Hi! Yes!

So you mentioned not having a big budget, which was discouraging you from going the indie route, and I did a metric tonne of research before publishing Changeling, and came across a handful of really good, free resources so thought I could pass some along in case it's helpful!

The only thing I don't have a good, free, replacement for is an editor I'm afraid, but a robust series of self edits could work well, or possibly a kickstarter for the editing costs? Something to look into maybe.

If you do decide to run a kickstarter to cover your editing costs, I'd highly recommend the Facebook Group "Kickstarter for Authors", loads and loads of free advice can be found in there, but that's all I can really suggest since I've not run one myself.

When it comes to preparing a book for publication, however, I have a couple of helpful free or low-cost resources.

is Reedsy Book Formatter. Now, Reedsy recently updated their platform and pricing, so I just (24th May 2025) went in and checked if their formatter was still free to use. It is! You have to make a Reedsy account, or login with a Facebook or Gmail account. Additionally, there's lots of buttons suggesting their "paid features", which makes sense. However the formatter, and the ability to download your formatted manuscript either as a PDF (for Print Books aka Paperback or Hardcover) or an EPub (Ebooks) is still a free function. The only 'catch' to the Reedsy formatter is that, on the bottom of the Copyright Page, they will input something like "Formatted with Reedsy Free Formatter" or something along those lines. I don't remember exactly. I was on a bit of an ego trip when I was researching my debut novel, so that was a No-go for me and I saved up and paid for Atticus to format my books, but that's NOT budget friendly and runs about $147, but I digress. Once you HAVE a formatted Book File — and if it's a PDF for Paperback, you know how many pages your book will be, then next expense is going to be a Cover. You can make your own book cover, but unless you're (A) A graphic Designer and (B) have your thumb on the pulse of the book cover market in your genre, I wouldn't recommend it. What I would recommend is...

Getcover Design Services. Getcovers are a professional design company based in Ukraine, and they designed the cover for my Reader Magnet "Whatever Happened to Madeline Hail?" and my debut novel, "Changeling" (I'll put pictures of the covers below.) Getcovers has a sister company called Miblart, which charges a closer-to-market-average for their design services, although still cheaper than many designers. I have NO PROOF of the following statement, but I suspect the designers at Getcovers are new with the company, and being trained up, before they're moved over to Miblart. Again, I have no proof of this, it's only a suspicion on my part. And that's NOT to say I have any complaints over Getcovers quality. What I would say is that, being based in Ukraine, somethings a little bit of back and forth is required before the designer understands what you're looking for. (In one particularly memorable moment, I ended up doing a mockup in MSPaint, and that seemed to solve ALL communication issues lol) But, on the flip side, all of Getcovers cover design packages come with unlimited revisions, so as long as you have a bit of patience, they're well worth it. Which brings me to cost. Getcovers isn't free, of course, but in my humble opinion they might as well be. Getcovers will design an Ebook Only Cover for $10. They will design an Ebook & Paperback Cover for $20. They have a premium service, for detailed covers, which is a Ebook & Paperback for $35. If you want a Hardcover Design added on, that's an additional $10. It's not free, but you cannot buy a PREMADE cover for that price. It's a little bit insane. Getcovers over other design services as well, such as author branding (My author branding was developed by them as well), marketing materials, and merchandise design, but again, I digress.

Finally, uploading your files. You have self edited as best you can, you've formatted your book, and you have your cover files. Now, all that's left to do is upload the book for sale somewhere. This is, honestly, the easiest part. Draft2Digital is a free platform to upload your books. They are a distributor, which means they take a small cut of your royalties for doing all the labour of sending your book out to a dozen other storefronts, but for ease of use, and time saved, it's a negligable amount (10% if I remember correctly). KDP or Kindle Direct Publishing is basically Amazon. You CANNOT have more than ONE KDP account, so if you're not sure if you've made a KDP account before, I'd reach out to customer service and check if you have a KDP account linked to your Amazon account. They'll be happy to let you know if that's the case, before you try making a new account and end up in hot water. But, essentially, it's also free to upload your book to KDP. When it comes to your EBook on KDP you have a choice between exclusive and wide. If you want to upload your Ebook to other platforms like Draft2digital, you CANNOT put your Ebook into Kindle Unlimited (aka KU). This is because Amazon requires exclusive rights to your book, so if it's uploaded anywhere else, they'll kick up a fuss. I've never had my books in KU, I prefer to keep Changeling widely available so take this next part with a pinch of salt, but I THINK KU is a 90day rolling contract. So you can have your book in KU for 90 days, and then choose to go wide. It's more difficult to be Wide, and THEN go KU, because you have to pull your book from all storefronts and make sure it's not available anywhere before putting it back into KU. The only "Cost" of publishing on KDP is if you decide to have a paperback or hardcover book, and want them to print a physical proof copy. This is a recommended step to make sure the files all uploaded correctly, however it's not a requirement. And if you do decide to print a proof, it's not too expensive. I think Changeling, which is a 5.5x8.5 trim, 399 pages, usually costs me less than $12 If you decide to publish Wide, and no Exclusive to Amazon, then other storefronts I recommend uploading to directly, instead of through Draft2Digital are Barnes & Noble, Googlebooks, and Kobo. Itch.io is also free to upload to, and is beginning to pick up steam with Ebooks! You can also turn on tips, so people can choose to pay you more than the book price is set to. The only 'Downside' to Itch.io is that is has a minimum withdrawl cost, which I THINK is $10 before you can have it paid out to your paypal account. Again, I'm pulling those numbers from memory, so I might be off a little. But, essentially, you can publish an Ebook for as little as $10, and a paperback for as little as... what... $45? Tops? I know that's still a handful of cash, but it's much, much, more reasonable than initial research suggests when you start looking into it <3 I hope ANY of this helped!!

EDIT!! I forgot to add the covers for "Whatever Happened To Madeline Hail?" and "Changeling" for examples of Getcovers work!!

Whatever Happened To Madeline Hail is the reader magnet for my newsletter, so I only really needed an Ebook Cover. I could have just spent $10 on this, but I want to offer it as a paperback once the main trilogy is complete, so I decided to go for the full package $35. Mainly because I was VERY new and didn't know how many stock images the designer would need to bring my vision to life. In hindsight, and for future reader magnets, I'll probably settle with the $20 option.

Changeling is the cover of my debut novel, and I've lost count of how many compliments I've gotten for it. I chose the $35 bracket for this cover design, and I actually ordered the entire trilogy all at once, so I also have books 2 and 3 covers matching.

Since Changeling is available in Paperback and Hardcover, I paid an additional $10 for the Hardcover version, the picture below is the full wrap for the paperback...

And for Xmas my Dad gave me the extra I needed for Getcovers to make custom Title Pages based on the cover design. I don't have a picture of that immediately to hand, as they're on my laptop, but a screenshot from inside of my ebook file looks like...

It’s not usually spoken about, but Seungmin has a special eye for art. He likes exploring the variety of ways to express and entertain specific emotions, ideas, and concepts. 

Of the thousands of ways to create art, photography might be the best fit for Seungmin in comparison to forms such as painting or graphic design, for example. The camera is possibly the single best man-made creation, he thinks. Anyone, professional or not, can click the capture button on the camera, and each picture or photoset can tell a different, specific story. And perhaps what captivates Seungmin the most about photography, and art as a whole, is the story. A single frame that captures one particular, significant moment in time. It can be personal or shared with the world, but Seungmin’s art is private and only for him. 

An influx of ropes made of different fibers and materials, varying in colors and lengths, made their way into the apartment. Seungmin is usually a private person and that extends to his art; typically not allowing you to see until the final project is complete—whether that be a small painting or the final version of a song. Obviously, despite the fact that Seungmin had been eager about this new hobby, he’d been private about it; afraid that you would potentially be put off by his new interest. But with a tab on his laptop mistakenly left open, the ropes began to make more sense; it wasn’t exactly some strange art project he’d been hiding. 

Shibari. An art form that fits Seungmin as a person more than he had anticipated. He’s always had a silent appreciation for the skill behind it, as well as the emotional connection between the rigger and the rigged. Eventually, that appreciation turned into experiential learning, and Seungmin found that he was surprisingly good at the practicing task of tying ropes against himself—and that he would get even better with more practice and experience, hopefully, with the addition of a partner. 

You did not approach Seungmin immediately. Instead, you choose to give it a day or two; attempting to subtly drop hints about your newfound knowledge with no idea of if Seungmin had been picking up on them. If he did, however, he refused to let you know. It took you vocalizing it; asking him if he’d be interested in spicing things up in the bedroom. There had been a gleam of light in his eyes, a special sparkle. He dared to crack a smile, hesitating at first, then succumbing to the feeling of joy. 

That was the start of a new journey in your relationship. You learned more about Shibari, and in succession, more about Seungmin and your relationship. Through entry-level, amateur, Shibari, it is as if you and Seungmin have connected on a deeper level in comparison to other moments of significance in your relationship—like seeing each other cry for the first time, your first road trip together, or, and in vast contrast, when he cums in you and watches his seed drip out, all before pushing it back in with two thick fingers. 

A scene will always start with a deep discussion about what it is that you want out of the next few hours. What is it that the both of you desire? Is it emotional depth? Intensity? Typically, Seunmin allows you the final say on how the scene progresses. Anything you need from him, he will provide. You tend to forfeit your final say, allowing for Seungmin to take the lead and do as he pleases; more than glad to be the pretty star of Seungmin’s show. 

There’s a few layers to it, though, of course. The man that Seungmin is, though, could not continue on without tracking his progress, combining his new-found interest with another that he’s loved for a long time. Seungmin has a natural skill for taking pictures. If you ask him, he would simply explain that he doesn’t think too much about it, he simply lets what he’s capturing move him. Each picture he takes, no matter how blurry or pristine, turns out exactly how it’s meant to be—and that is the beauty of photography according to Seungmin. 

Seungmin is rarely ever such an open book and the same goes for his various picture books. Collections. Several of them are filled with so many important moments in the last few years of his life; only a select few of them, however, are for the eyes of the masses, such as close friends and family. There are also two additional picture books, black and inconspicuous, filled with varying pictures of you. Some pictures are innocent, full of bright smiles and simplicity. Other pictures are very clearly the opposite—often still showing your beautiful bright smile as you’re displayed in various compromising positions with little to no clothing on—all for you and Seungmin’s eyes only. 

Seungmin loves taking pictures of you because it allows for control—himself as the creator, the artist. Seungmin likes to take his subject and twist it, perhaps even defile it—because sometimes that’s where a lot of the beauty and story resides: in mess and destruction. That, however, doesn’t mean that the structurally neat aesthetic of beauty within art doesn’t captivate him as equally as mayhem and wreckage within art—after all, in contrast to his lewd preferences, Seungmin is a very neat person. Destruction, however, is poetic—like the most beautiful song his ears have been blessed to hear. It’s all completely visual, though, and Seungmin feels intensely lucky to capture it. 

The photographs he takes are all of you in lewd, promiscuous positions. Seungmin picks the type of lingerie you wear—the specific fabric and color; darker, deeper colors and lace being of his few favorites to adorn you in, satin being a very close second. He loves choosing the type of material in which he uses to restrain you. Silks are fine because they’re comfortable around your wrists and ankles. Seungmin tends to use ropes when he would like to make intricate designs and also tie your legs and arms. The ropes tend to cause discomfort after a long while, so Seungmin makes sure to be quick, but careful, with everything.  

Seungmin doesn’t have a particular art process. He visualizes a position to place you in, and from there he begins to work on his masterpiece, bending you to his will. It’s all for him, for his interest, and he’s extremely grateful that you allow him to do to you as he pleases in times of creative bouts. 

His favorite photoset is from one of the first few weeks of joint experimentation. That week, he’d been focusing on leg binding ties. Seungmin is a bit of an overachiever, trying more complex ties despite his formerly low skill level. He remained calm, replaying each step in his mind as he tied both of your legs into a H-shaped Futomomo tie. In his favorite picture, your legs are spread open. Cunt bruised and stained with thick, fresh spurts of cum. He captures your full body in the frame—hand shyly covering your face from the camera but he can still see your smile (now, you wear a wide smile in most pictures, not caring to cover any part of your body). Seungmin can’t help but smile, ears growing a light shade of red whenever he looks at the picture. 

The aftercare process typically depends on the nature of the scene. Had Seunmin been particularly harsh on you? Had the ropes or silks been tied too harshly against your skin, leaving indents? Seungmin allows you time to come down from your high, kissing at the indents in your skin from the tightness of the ropes. Lotion and soothing balm firmly being rubbed into your skin. It’s simple—a bath and massage, small words of affection followed by a deep conversation; what you liked, what you didn’t, and what to look forward to next time. 

And for Seungmin, just to feel your skin and warmth, to be close to you is enough aftercare for him. All the love he gives you, you return to him. What matters most to him within setting up a scene is you and your comfortability. If you’re not feeling good—there is no means to create. The photos, the ropes, the sex—all of it allows for you and Seungmin to be intimate with each other on a greater scale; but if you’re not comfortable, those things don’t matter. You are his muse. Seungmin finds himself taking inspiration from you.

"I need you to run to me, run to me, lover." (Run by Hozier, the chorus specifically. I know the song is supposed to be a metaphor but I'm suggesting it at face value). A very healing energy to your person's messages. Your person could also fantasise about you a lot... in a non-x-rated 18+ kind of way. It was mentioned on one of the cards but that part of the card felt awkward in the rest of the cards. They’re possessive, it doesn't seem like in a negative or extreme way but again, that's not something that was strong or clear. There’s something to do with the attention of others. They just want to be yours completely… Honestly, a submissive yet dominant kind of energy. The vibes while doing the reading felt like very young vibes? There’s a youthfulness there. Someone who either is actually young in age or hasn’t grown up emotionally in a certain aspect. It felt like they did something prideful that was hurtful to you and you two are in a disconnect during the moment captured in the reading. It didn’t feel like a serious fight. More so when you’re upset with someone and acting like you’re madder than you really are (your vibes) and the other person is sweating and begging you to talk to them again (their vibes).

No way. You won't believe this. Today Commander Fox marched into the caf shop, ordered his caf and came DIRECTLY to my table! No need to be so tall towering and intimidating... Trying to work outside my atelier maybe wasn't a great idea 🙈 Aaand teasing him in the message, calling his caf „Spicy YOU“ without thinking twice made it even worse…

I don’t know why, but he didn‘t stop grinning and he offered to invite me to as much ‚SPICY FOX‘ (...caf ☕️? Of course you... mean the drink, Sir?) as I want if I drew him smiling instead of tired like the first time.

And it’s not necessary to overemphasize that kriffing caf blend like! that! 🙈 Almost hissing... showing canine teethhzzzss 🦊 ... with that glare

Fun unforseen side story to this drawing: I was sitting in the train on my way, drawing and giggling, irritating teenies so I showed them this drawing for fun. They couldn’t believe that I do TCW art, I guess I disillusioned them, being 30+ with my wild locks, heavy boots and fun excitement, not caring about indignant elders in the train, which would gasp if they knew that I‘m heading to play graphic design boss for some office dressed business peers in glass buildings ✨ I love this, indulging in my betweens like that because I LOVE THE STORY-ART-COLLAB-WHATEVER-MAGIC-MOMENTS. Hi Cassie! Will all the colorful graphics we know from Tumblr appear in the physical copy of Secrets of Blackthorn Hall?

Yes! It's taking quite a long time to graphically design it as a book, actually, because it was conceived of as this online multimedia project. But we wanted to make sure it had all the illustrations, the hand-drawn faerie "bill" for Round Tom's work, Julian's mural, etc. Definitely a crash course in graphic design :) (Don't worry, I've hired a professional designer, I'm not doing it myself!)
