His hands shaking, Sergio took in a deep breath, closing his eyes. He blinked back tears as he said, "I wasn't in no orphanage, but...I wish I was. My...my dad died when I was 7...right on my birthday. I still had my mom, but..." His free hand twitched, Sergio wondering if he should show the deep, old scar across his chest. He decided not to, knowing that Vendra's current injuries outweighed his old ones. "She...she hurt me. She yelled at me, tellin' me the only reason I was alive was that she'd collect a government check for bein' a widowed mom..." His body shuddered, his eyes watering again. "She kept tellin' me it shoulda been me who died, not him. I wasn't raised in no orphanage, but..." He lightly squeezed Vendra's hand. "I been through some shit, too. I...I undastand."
He didn't mean to make it about himself; in fact, he hoped he could have taken his entire past with him to the grave. However, he just wanted to let the twins know that even though they were probably the only two Nethers in that dimension, they weren't alone, at least, not completely. From what he could gather, the Progs' ambitions had led to a lot of people getting hurt, and he would have bet a lot of bolts on the possibility that there was a good amount of collateral damage. People were afraid of them, and he then knew why. If he was a Polarian during the Nether Crisis, would he have ever gotten this close to the Progs? Absolutely not.
The fact that he met Vendra and Neftin the time he did was a sort of blessing in disguise. He went in knowing nothing about the Progs and ended up befriending them both...and Riot. After knowing who the Progs really were behind any potential mask of intimidation or aloofness, learning more about them only made him feel closer to them.
He continued, "I...I left home when I was 15. Got involved wit some gangs in Solana. I wasn't proud a' nothin' I did back in Solana, but there was nothin' else I coulda done ta survive. Once I got enough bolts, I shipped the hell outta Solana and came here."
He'd done it all: kidnapping, shipjacking, assassinations, interrogations, what have you. When Sergio escaped home, the sense of freedom and rebellion was nothing short of intoxicating. He was finally able to fight back against those who messed with him without any consequences...in the beginning, that was.
It all came crashing down the moment he had to kill someone for the first time. He was still 15. He'd stolen from the wrong hoodlums and got himself cornered. Before, he would wave around a blaster around his "friends" and talk up a big game about how if anyone crossed him, he wouldn't have hesitated to fire. When push came to shove, however, the blaster trembled in his hand as he hyperventilated. Even in a panicked state, Sergio's aim was true, killing the gangster in a few well-placed shots to the torso.
Sergio never got into the details of his gang activity with the twins, but Vendra had seen the accuracy in which he dispatched the gangster who shot her, and Neftin heard his firsthand account with nothing omitted. The twins could likely have pieced together that Sergio was no regular bum with a gun. He heard of Ratchet's exploits, coming from the same galaxy as the Lombax, but didn't pay much attention to them. Ratchet and the Galactic Rangers conveniently had bigger fish to fry whenever Sergio and other Specialized Laborers of Solana had their syndicate business to conduct. Sergio being a feline alien with a proficiency with firearms may have rung a few bells in either of the twins heads...
you are not a complete idiot. ((For Sergio with Neftin nether-twins))
Sergio went on a date an outing with Vendra one day to get his mind off of working some time after the Hagglesetz incident. Things were relatively peaceful that time around, but a brand new batch of thugs accosted them, mostly targeting Vendra. With all the stress built up from the past few weeks, Sergio couldn't blame her for having gone a little too far in defending herself and him.
However, Sergio wasn't passive that time around, taking his Omniblaster out and firing the thugs while Vendra repelled them with her magic. There was one who'd gotten the drop on Sergio and had a clear shot at him. Vendra noticed that before Sergio did and stepped in front of him to block the bullet. Somehow, the bullet surpassed Vendra's magical defenses and hit her square in the stomach.
The wound had sapped Vendra of her energy, nearly collapsing before Sergio caught her. The wound wasn't too deep, but it knocked her out cold.
Knowing that the Progs had a spare supply of Nanotech at home, Sergio sped towards their home and rushed her inside, applying first aid. He'd done the same thing for himself plenty of times, but it felt different applying it to someone else, someone he wasn't just trying to keep alive for a paycheck.
The nanotech worked its magic, but Vendra was still out cold. That she was injured was both Neftin and Sergio's nightmare, and when Neftin asked him what happened, he figured it was best not to give the whole truth. But knowing how much the Progs have both done for him, the truth was the least Neftin deserved.
So, Sergio explained what happened, not missing a single detail. When he spoke about Vendra taking a blast for him, his entire body shuddered. Vendra could have died protecting Sergio; if that happened, he would have accepted whatever fate Neftin saw fit to exact on him.
Sergio called himself a complete idiot for not checking his six. He'd been trained for situations like that, but that one mistake could have been even more critical. To that day, he still didn't know what the Progs did to draw so much ire from the townsfolk, but he figured he was in good company as he explained what he did to the thug who shot Vendra. One blast to the cranium made sure the thug wouldn't see the light of day again, unlike his cronies.
Once he was finished talking, Sergio tried and failed to blink back the tears welling up in his eyes. He didn't beg Neftin to show mercy; all he asked was that he finish his story uninterrupted. He didn't cry about what may have happened after he finished his story, but rather about what could have happened if things went any more wrong...
His ears twitched when Neftin spoke in a surprisingly understanding way. He looked up to the titan, tears streaking his face fur.

Ken Sharp – I’ll Remember the Laughter (Jet Fighter)
Back in the day, when an artist could not fit all the goodies they had stored up on a single slab of vinyl, they would release a two-record set. The latest collection by pop/rock anthropologist Ken Sharp is an embarrassment of riches. It wouldn’t even fit in a two-record set, at 50 tunes it’s more like a three-record set or a box set.
The album title I’ll Remember the Laughter is rather apt because laughter is not the only thing this brace of tunes will make you remember. It is a stylistic traipse through the history of 60s and 70s AM/FM radio (with a little 80s and beyond mixed in for good measure).
Sharp has grown a cult audience for his sharp pop songwriting skills and on-point understanding of popular (and also obscure) music of the past. Taking a sonic trip through I’ll Remember the Laughter is like coming across a transistor radio from the multiverse; an alt-history of songs that could have, should have and would have been hits in the glory days of Top 40 radio, only if they had just been recorded in time.
It is a place where Todd Rundgren rubs elbows with T. Rex, The Knack hangs out with Hall & Oates, and The Raspberries had the kind of career that merited inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The styles of I’ll Remember the Laughter are all over this place – and I mean that in the best possible way. From the bluesy shredding of “No More Silver Linings,” the strutting bubblegum pop/soul of “42nd Street” to the catchy prog of “Halyx Rising (Lora’s Song)” to the sunshine pop of “Dennis” to the soulful lament “Cracking This Heart of Stone,” the album is a primer of musical styles and feels.
“Lightning Crash” feels like an old lost Cheap Trick fave, while “Shut Out the Lights” rides on a Clapton-esque guitar line. “Ghetto Child” (not to be mixed up with the Spinners classic of the same name) does share that song’s Philly International soulful vibe, as does the sweet intro to “Are You a Lover or a Fighter?” which eventually moves into more of a blue-eyed soul feel. “Between the Lines” on the other hand, pulls from the paisley underground school of The Dream Syndicate and The Bangles.
Beyond Sharp’s sharp originals, I’ll Remember the Laughter also offers some adventurous and intriguing covers. There is a swinging version of The Who’s “The Kids are Alright” and two (count ‘em) covers of songs from a semi-obscure pre-superstardom album by 80s pop/rock icon Rick Springfield of “Jessie’s Girl” fame. (Springfield adds some tasty backing vocals to Sharp’s recordings of his songs.) However, possibly the greatest cover is a stunningly catchy version of “Girl,” which is remembered in pop culture as the song which Davy Jones performed in his guest appearance on The Brady Bunch.
So, if you miss the glory days of pop radio, where diverse styles rubbed shoulders in a mind-boggling array of music – with the only true through line being that most of it was one hell of an earworm – you can recreate that sensation with I’ll Remember the Laughter.

1. Jules and the Polar Bears – “Shadows Break” (1978)
Group led by Jules Shear, who went on to write hits for Cyndi Lauper (“All Through the Night”) and The Bangles (“If She Knew What She Wants”). This is from their first record, Got No Breeding, a fantastic and smart record from start to finish.
2. Van Duren – “Grow Yourself Up” (1978)
A Memphis dude and Big Star affiliate. This is from his first album, which is still not available on Spotify, but luckily it’s also on the soundtrack to an upcoming documentary about Mr. Duren, which _is _on Spotify.
3. Sneaky Feelings – “Someone Else’s Eyes” (1983)
I honestly don’t know much about this band, just that they’re from New Zealand and were on Flying Nun, but to me they sound more like a UK power pop band than any of the other Flying Nun bands of the time.
4. Felt – “The Day the Rain Came Down” (1985)
The musical project of “Lawrence,” who said he was going to start a band, release 10 albums and 10 singles, and then break up, and did exactly that. This is from Felt’s fourth album, Ignite the Seven Cannons and Set Sail for the Sun, when the band still featured the beautiful guitar stylings of Maurice Deebank, on full display on this track. Also, it really does end that abruptly.
5. The Three O’Clock – “When Lightning Strikes” (1983)
One of the pillars of LA’s “Paisley Underground” scene in the 80’s (which, in my mind, also inclues The Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, and the Bangles). Later, serendipitously, signed to Prince’s Paisley Park record label and gave a young Jason Falkner his start. This is from their first record.
6. The Boys – “Baby It’s You” (1979)
Included on Titan: It’s All Pop, a compilation put out by the wonderful Numero Group consisting of music released by the Kansas City regional power-pop label Titan in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Kansas City was actually a step up for The Boys, who hailed from the music mecca of Lincoln, Nebraska.
7. Magazine – “Rhythm of Cruelty (7” Version)” (1979)
Magazine frontman Howard Devoto was a founding member of the Buzzcocks, but left before they ever released an album (he does have a co-songwriting credit on “Orgasm Addict”—nothing to sneeze at). For some reason his brief Buzzcocks membership is always one of the first things mentioned about him (and I’m clearly part of the problem), but Magazine put out four really great nervy, new-wavey albums of their own. Bassist Barry Adamson went on to a stint in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, soundtracking David Lynch films, and other cool stuff.
8. Gong – “Love is How Y Make It” (1973)
For the most part, I’m not sure I can hang with Gong, who are about as goofy as an art/prog-rock band from the 70’s can get. But I’ve loved this song ever since Four Tet put it on a mix back in 2006. And it serves as a nice palette cleanser here to move out of the power-pop new wave mode of the first songs into some other territory.
9. Was (Not Was) – “Wheel Me Out (Long Version” (1980)
Before he was producing 90’s career-renaissance albums for The Rolling Stones and Bonnie Raitt, and before he became president of Blue Note Records, Don Was was making weirdo funk-disco music in Detroit.
10. The B-52’s – “Ain’t it a Shame” (1986)
Was turned onto this wonderful song, from the otherwise little-talked-about 1986 album Bouncing Off the Satellites, by my friend and former bandmate Dr. Nathan DeYonker, who always wanted our band Reading to cover it. I think Sinead O’Connor covered it at one point—but I’ve never heard it.
11. Nite Jewel – “It Goes Through Your Head” (2011)
The recording project of LA-resident Ramona Gonzalez, whose music to me often captures the emotional essence of late-80’s/early 90’s R&B in a more lo-fi package. All her albums are great, but this was a one-off single from a few years ago.
12. Donna Summer – “Lucky” (1979)
I picked up a copy of Bad Girls recently on the cheap, and this Moroder-produced synth-pop number from Side Four caught my ear.
13. Shura – “religion (you can lay your hands on me) – edit” (2019)
I know next to nothing about Shura, but I heard this song recently and really dug not only the wonderful melodies and production, but also the disarming innocence of the song’s steamy focus on “kissing.”
14. Richenel – “Perfect Stranger” (1982)
Seems like I saved the songs I know the least about for the end. Music From Memory, a great Dutch record label that I’ve been following for a couple of years, has put out a couple of EP’s worth of stuff by this guy, a Dutch singer who later put out music on 4AD and some major labels.
15. Rare Silk – “Storm” (1985)
I really know nothing about this band, but I was surprised to find out they were from BOULDER, COLORADO. Given that, to me, this song sounds like it wasn’t even made on this planet, Boulder makes more sense than a lot of places. A reissue label I love out of the UK, Be With Records, is putting out a 10” of this song later this year.

“Apparently I’m taking responsibility for your parolees, Gords,” said the officer. “As far as we know, the Progs have accomplices from Solana like Mr. Salvadora here.”
Sergio frowned at the officer beside him, then gave a skeptical look towards the Lombax. There wasn’t much he could have done to counter the Snivelakian’s claims; Sergio didn’t think to check the legal differences between Solana and Polaris when he needed to escape his old syndicate. Perhaps the PDF had more tabs on the tabby than he realized.
Unbeknownst to either Sergio and Vendra, the Snivelakian was technically within his right to fine Sergio for both “crimes,” but there were so many laws within the Polarian statutes that most cops and politicians had forgotten them.
"Go back to the Netherverse, Progs!" called a voice outside the twins' apartment. A brick crashed through a window before the sound of a cruiser speeding away started to fade in the distance.
Aaaaand that was yet another perfect window for them. Great, just... wonderful. People were really getting bolder by the day. They’ve had so many doing it already that Vendra and her brother barely reacted to it anymore. Honestly, they were just annoyed at this point, and felt the need to go after the perpetrators grow stronger.
“Looks like we’re gonna have to make some calls...” Snorting loudly for herself, Vendra decided to put down the cup she had been drinking tea from on the coffee table in front of her so she could grab one of the other items that was resting on it, her comm-unit. It was time to call her tabby friend she knew and ask him if he come around to help them here.
Because of how often people came around to throw bricks, the twins had created a routine where one of them would go ahead and call Jim to report the incident while the other one would call someone to help them with the window.
And it was pretty obvious who was in charge of what here. The small Nether waited for Sergio to pick while mummering, “Come one... pick up...”

PROGRESSIVE TRACKS SHOW #206 (“Four-Year Retrospective”)
April 15, 2013: A day that will live... in infamy.
Not really. But that first edition of Progressive Tracks Show was more than a little rough around the edges. It’s still pretty rough, but I guess you listeners have grown accustom to my ‘style’... because you’re still listening!. And I thank you for that!
So to celebrate the past 4 years, and bring in the start of Year 5, I thought I’d choose tunes that I’ve played along the way... some of the over 1,000 different artists you’ve heard. This isn’t a “best of show”, because it’s all good, but songs that will give you a decent representation of what I’ve been spinning for you since 2013.
And my intent (or threat... you choose) is to continue this into the foreseeable future on both KPTZ 91.9 FM in the US, and Progzilla Radio in the UK.
So put on some headphones, sit back, and enjoy the show!
- Mike “ProgTracks” Pollack
