LIVESTREAM: ORRIN EVANS with Ralph Bowen, Kenny Davis, and Maria Marmarou, SMALLS JAZZ CLUB, 23 NOVEMBER 2024, 9 pm set
I got to know ORRIN EVANS when he replaced Ethan Iverson in The Bad Plus and TBP 2.0 was the version I knew and liked better, though Iverson’s semi-curatorial projects are my favorites. But that band is Reid Anderson/Dave King and both Evans and Iverson found other outlets for their immese creativities.
Witness this curious gig with an interesting selection from his roster of collaborators. Indeed, SMALLS advertised as ORRIN EVANS AND FRIENDS. Ralph Bowen has played tenor sax in Captain Black and other projects. He was part of Blue Note’s young all stars, Out of the Blue, in the 1980s with bassist Kenny Davis and the likes of familiars Billy Drummond, Renee Rosnes, Ralph Peterson, Kenny, Garrett, and Greg Osby. Maria Marmarou is younger and a very capable but not flashy drummer who has intersected with Evans.
Bowen played flute and that instrument has conventions to get used to like the vibraphone (witness Steve Nelson with Renee Rosnes this weekend) and the soprano sax. I was better separating Nelson’s music from his instrument than I was with Bowen. The even better exercise is to hear Scott Robinson’s trumpet illuminate his saxophone work. All this to say is that Bowen’s flute was, well, flute-y—ethereal, wispy, lacking bite, particularly without another horn for an ensemble effect to lead to solos as in some of those just pre-Mwandishi Herbie Hancock albums or in Amina Figarova’s band.
Presumably that’s what Evans was going for and his own playing was atmospheric while still having his typical drive and still some spikiness. There were just four tunes in the hour so things stretched out, including them backing into All The Things You Are. The closer was Boffadem which Evans has recorded on his own and with TBP. The backstory, which maybe I didn’t need to hear, is that he and a pal ogled one woman and then another and decided they liked boffadem.
Fine stuff if not sublime as Emmet Cohen was to start off this weekend’s run.

If Bella was a boy (with Bella's gift. And he would be Edward's singer). What would change? What do you think?
So, I gave a fairly detailed response to this already. The long and short of it being that, depending if Beauford’s the right kind of guy, he and Edward will essentially end up in a romantic relationship neither realizes is romantic. Then Edward eats Beauford at some point.
But, since we’re here, I suppose we can enter imagination land and get into some more details.
Caveat that I haven’t read Life and Death and have no desire to, so we’re actually ignoring some strange alternate universe canon that never made much sense anyway. Shocking, I know, and very unlike this blog.
Beauford Swan and a Kid More Messed Up Than Even Bella Swan
In order for our love story to even start, Beauford has to be the kind of guy that Edward’s into (or can project that he’s into). Well, we know Edward’s into Carlisle (he projects pretty much an idealized version of Carlisle’s personality onto Bella and actively wants to look like Carlisle as to him Carlisle’s is the face of holy perfection while Edward looks like a demon) and given what he says he likes of Bella’s personality we can extrapolate from there.
Edward’s not going to be into an Emmett or anyone remotely resembling Mike Newton. He’s going to be into a quiet, kind, misunderstood, sensative, intellectual who probably looks some level of frail and in need of protection. Essentially, what he saw in Bella, subverting the Madonna complex he has for her a bit (Beauford will be a kind of Madonna, sort of, but not quite so blatant).
So, we have Beauford, who looks a lot like male!Bella and by that I mean he keeps her pale skin, her big dark eyes, and general look about her that she could break with the slightest contact. Basically, he’s a very pretty guy the likes of which typically comes from a shojou anime. He’s also likely still debilitatingly clumsy.
So, you have this guy who’s awful at sports, as in each time he tries he probably ends up in the ICU. Is an intellectual in that he reads old books, an odd amount of Jane Austen at that, but isn’t actually an artist or writer. In fact, other than reading, he has no real hobbies. Has a larger than life mother who constantly needs looking after. And has nothing in common with his peers.
As bad as Bella had it, I posit Beauford would have had it worse. He’s not going to get along with 90% of boys until... probably college. He’s always picked last in kickball, shares 0 interests with most other boys, and is probably ruthlessly bullied for all of this and more. Worse, being so pretty, he’s going to attract a lot of romantic attention, especially from preteen girls who are very into that look and Beauford’s sensitive artistic nature. This is going to get him so much shit from other guys.
Add on top of this Bella’s original difficulty socializing and I imagine Beauford is just as depressed if not more so.
Fast Forward to Forks
Beauford comes to Forks for a similar reasons to Bella, because he felt like a third-wheel in Renee and Phil’s relationship and that his mother was better off without him. I can also see him just not knowing how to act around Phil, who probably expects a stepson who’s more... sonnish. Beauford’s not going to play catch with dad in the yard and I can see Beauford wanting to avoid all of that entirely.
He enters Forks and has a vaguely similarish reception to Bella. Only, there are some key differences.
I imagine Mike, Tylor, and Eric quickly sour on Beauford as he goes from being potentially cool new bro to a guy that can pick up every girl in this school. He’s like the Cullens, but less incestuous and creepy and therefore a thousand times worse. They desperately don’t want Beauford sitting at their lunch table where he can potentially pick up all the babes.
In other words, Mike is the new Lauren, and Beauford knows it. But it’s either eat with these guys or eat in the bathroom, and Beauford’s not at that level of desperation yet.
Jessica’s probably into him, having been into Edward (another pretty, sensitive, guy), but unlike Bella I imagine Beauford has a little better social intelligence in that he has seen this game before and he knows where it leads. So, he desperately, actively, doesn’t flirt with anyone. Which makes him a terrible conversationalist, and he just comes off as really weird.
Beauford, therefore, actually is a Cullen 2.0. You don’t want to be a Cullen 2.0 (Bella is the only one in that school who thinks the Cullens were in any way popular).
I imagine Edward notices this, plus Jessica’s interest, and gives a Nelson laugh from across the room. Now someone else can have the joys of Jessica Stanley’s lust. Though he does notice he can’t read Beauford’s thoughts, which is strange.
Like Bella, Edward undoubtedly thinks Beauford is at first highly overrated, just like all the other mindless teenagers in Forks, and rather plain (from his narration, Edward likes blondes and lighter eyes).
The Rest
Biology happens, it’s a disaster, Beauford has no idea what he did to get Edward to loathe him so much but this time Mike isn’t in any way sympathetic. Instead, Mike just can’t believe he and Cullen seem to agree on something for once.
Edward flees to Alaska, decides he won’t lose to Hamburger, and comes back to do damage control. And we start mirroring canon a lot here. Edward has varying conversations with Beauford, is intoxicated by his very scent, and starts projecting an almost saint like personality onto him. Edward grows increasingly obsessed, starts creeping into Beauford’s room at night to protect him from spiders, etc.
The difference being that Edward is utterly convinced that what he and Beauford share is the highest platonic ideal of friendship. They are platonic soulmates, all other friendships pale in comparison to them, they are intellectual peers and artists.
This is even when they still go to the meadow, Edward kidnaps Beauford in Port Angeles for Italian dinner (despite Beaufrod not having been nearly raped without Edward’s intervention), Beauford is invited to the Cullen house, and more.
Beauford, being Bella levels of oblivious, also has no idea this is a romantic relationship. Likely, what he feels at first and is driven by is a strong sense of kinship with Edward. As Edward is also an intellectual outsider hated by the male half of the school. Beauford’s been there, bro.
However, like Bella with Alice, he appreciates small details of Edward’s vampiric physical appearance, enjoys staring at Edward’s perfect face, and really digs that vampire smell.
I imagine, beyond what happened in Twilight things like the following occur: Edward constantly sketches Beauford in unintentionally (but secretly intentional) erotic positions with no clothes (this is art!), Edward leers at Beauford changing in his bedroom because “we’re both men”, Edward insists on discussing Beauford’s future bride with Beauford and imagines the most perfect woman in the world while also imagining smashing her head in like a melon.
But I imagine most of the Twilight plot points happen. The difference being that everyone is very confused on why these two can’t admit they’re dating. Rosalie probably bringing up very valid points of “Edward, if you want this guy to go date someone else then you can’t monopolize his life” and Edward telling her to stop being so petty and jealous of Beauford’s beauty. Aro, I imagine, just dies in New Moon and has no idea what to say when Beauford returns from the dead because it’s not, “Oh look, the lovers reunited! Ah, right, I forgot, they’re just friends. Yes...”
The other difference being, as I strongly suspect that without Renesmee Edward would never have turned Bella (Renesmee really forces that issue as Bella actually dies before Edward turns her), that he would have eventually eaten Beauford as Alice predicted.
But he’d be so delicious.

Who owns the covid vaccines?

A key idea from sf is “all laws are local, and no law knows how local it is.” Prisoners of our own time and place, it’s hard not to feel like we’re living in the only possible world, is if everything around us is inevitable and natural — and any change is “unnatural.”
But anyone who’s ever dabbled in multi-agent modeling (sims where “individuals” each have their own goals and aversions) knows there are lots of stable configurations that a big, complex system can fall into, and re-rerunning the same sim produces wildly different outcomes.
14 months ago, we hit STOP on our big, complex system and now the US is about to hit START again. It will not be a return to “normalcy,” because the old normal wasn’t inevitable. There are lots of other ways we could get along. And frankly, the old normal sucked.
A key way in which Old Normal sucked was the way that monopolists were able to style themselves as heroic entrepreneurs whose great rewards were commensurate with their great risks — when in reality, the risks were always socialized and only the gains were privatized.
That’s an area where a new normal is long overdue, and that new normal is being born in the controversy over public access to covid vaccines.
Helping the poor world manufacture its own vaccines is the obvious right thing to do.
Not just because vaccine apartheid is slow genocide, but also because the longer billions of people are infected, the greater the chance that one of them will incubate a vaccine-resistant, even more deadly mutation.
MRNA vaccines are wild: compared to conventional vaccines, they can be manufactured with 99.7% less capital and 99.9% less physical plant, and mRNA production facilities can retool to make new vaccines 1,000% faster.
https://coronavirus.medium.com/manufacturing-mrna-vaccines-is-surprisingly-straightforward-despite-what-bill-gates-thinks-222cffb686ee
Moderna’s own assessment is that new mRNA facilities can be built in 3–4 months. There’s no good scientific or humanitarian reason to object to patent- and know-how transfer to the Global South, where vaccination is currently projected for 2023/4 (!).
https://apnews.com/article/drug-companies-called-share-vaccine-info-22d92afbc3ea9ed519be007f8887bcf6
We’ve just experienced the collapse of the racist lie — peddled by Big Pharma, Bill Gates, Howard Dean and other vaccine apartheid apologists — that poor brown people are too primitive to make vaccines.
The new talking point? “CHINA! CHINA! CHINA!”
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/15/how-to-rob-a-bank/#roll-the-dice
Whether it’s racist lies about the Global South or New Cold War hysteria, the underlying ideological story is the same: exclusive patent rights and the (spectacular) profits they yield are the foundation of lifesaving medical innovation.
That is, fate has placed among us a tiny cohort of collosi, endowed with the superpower of inventing the future. But for all their creative might, these saviors-in-potentia have the fragile temperaments of toddlers, and if they’re denied their due, they’ll abandon us to die.
“Behind every great fortune lies a great crime.” The true mRNA vaccines theft isn’t entrepreneur-inventors who face robbery by the public sector — rather, those “entrepreneurs” have enjoyed billions in public subsidies, and now insist they owe nothing in return.
So much public investment went into the covid vaccines that it’s hard to account for it all. The GAO thinks that Uncle Sam coughed up $18–23b in direct subsidies. BARDA pumped in $19.3b.
https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/hblog20210512.191448/full/
The USG picked up the tab for non-clinical studies of new covid vaccines ($900m), and also shelled out for Phase III trials ($2.7b).
Moderna got $53m for production capacity, part of $100m in direct capacity contracts to pharma, backed with $2.7b for contract manufacturers.
J&J got a $1b pre-order from the USG; Moderna got $4.95b, Pfizer (which touts its lack of public subsidy!) got a $5.97b guaranteed order.
That’s just the latest round of investment. BARDA has been backing mRNA vaccine research for years, pumping billions into the project.
Pharma’s claim that it doesn’t owe us anything in return makes no sense, even by the companies’ own logic. They say that markets produce wonders because they reward canny risk-taking with vast fortunes.
By that logic, the public — who assumed the majority of the risk in developing vaccines — are the angel investors in this high-tech unicorn, and the pharma companies are the VCs who came in with some late capital to help scale up a sure thing.
It’s neither good business — nor legal — for early minority investors get squeezed out by latecomers.
But, of course, the government isn’t a business. Our democratic institutions direct our national productive capacity to R&D in service to human thriving, not profit.
Public investment in R&D isn’t a business in the same way that having kids isn’t a retirement plan: we have kids because we love them and want them to thrive. If they care for us in our dotage, that’s great, but if you treat your kid as an ambulatory 401k, you’re a monster.
I first encountered these ideas when serving as an NGO rep at WIPO alongside Jamie Love and Knowledge Ecology International. Love helped create the Access to Medicines Treaty and has been fighting the pharma industry’s self-serving story of fragile genius for decades.
In an interview with Janine Jackson at FAIR, Love lays out the plain case for an IP-waiver to enable poor countries to make their own vaccines, like the undeniable truth that this would “definitely expand the production and supply of vaccines.”
https://fair.org/home/government-money-thats-gone-into-vaccine-development-is-being-privatized-by-a-handful-of-companies/
Love also recounts the kind of public subsidy that went into covid vaccine production (for example, Pfizer’s boasts of free enterprise entrepreneurship omits the €400m from Germany and €100m from the rest of the EU).
Pharma’s claims of philanthropic largesse are wildly overblown. Pfizer told its shareholders it expects $26b from covid vaccines in 2021; Moderna’s projecting $20b (Moderna’s CEO’s personal net worth just hit $5b).
All that before pharma companies jack up the prices for “their” vaccines, in the years to come when we all need annual boosters, when the price will go from $10 to $175/dose, for a vaccine that costs $0.10/dose to manufacture.
The case for public access to vaccines and the case against pharma as a necessary or even laudable force for good is so thin, it’s remarkable that it’s persisted this long.
But as Love points out, the ideology that knowledge-monopolies are moral has some powerful backers.
Bill Gates is a prime example. Gates has been committed to enclosing commonly created knowledge and turning it into a monopoly — in service to coaxing our toddler-genius-collosi into action — since he was a teenager, writing petulant letters to computer hobbyists.
Today, Gates — a convicted monopolist — directs one of the world’s great fortunes (“behind every great fortune…”), and he mobilizes his capital to prop up the story of necessary and benevolent profiteering.
The Gates Foundation, for example, donates millions to “independent” media outlets (as well as partnering with public media like the BBC), and as Love describes, this has a chilling effect on negative reporting on Gates, the Foundation, and its ideology.
Like the time Love got a Washington Monthly reporter interested in a critical story about how the Gates Foundation’s grants influence its media coverage — only to have the reporter’s editor kill the story because they’d just applied for one of those grants (!).
Gates is a true ideologue, a relentless campaigner against any public access to public goods, in every domain, not just software. He’s been at it a long time, leading the charge against Nelson Mandela’s demand that South Africa be allowed to manufacture its own AIDS drugs.
Love: “Gates is a smart guy; he’s not the only smart guy around or smart woman around. I think people need to listen to other views. And, actually, Gates has sort of a mental block about these issues, and so some of his arguments just don’t add up.”
But all laws are local, and multi-agent systems have many stable configurations. On Friday, the New York Times editorial board — long a voice for strong corporate power — published an editorial and accompanying package strongly endorsing vaccine waivers.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/14/opinion/biden-covid-vaccines-world-india.html
The Times notes that the global economy is losing trillions due to lockdown, and that these loses will mount for so long as vaccines aren’t universally available.
But it also makes an ethical case, calling vaccine apartheid a “moral failure.”
It warns of political instability and the potential for states to topple if something isn’t done, pointing to the pitched battles in Colombia (in which death squads are now murdering leftists with impunity and posting snuff videos to social media as a boast — and a warning).
Beyond advocating for vaccine waivers, the Times backs Public Citizen’s plan to spend $25b ramping up domestic, publicly owned vaccine production facilities to make vaccines to be given away free or at cost to poor countries.
https://www.citizen.org/article/25-billion-to-vaccinate-the-world/
That effort will produce 8b vaccine doses, “enough to vaccinate half the planet.” And it will provide booster shots and new anti-variant vaccines into the future.
The future is coming. Lockdowns are lifting. The rich world is inching toward an emergence from emergency. But normalcy isn’t returning — thank goodness. The whole world deserves (and requires) so much better than normal.

Nathalie Kelley for Adele Gonzalez for Prodigal Son: Adele is not a woman to mess with. Working as a captain in the NYPD is a tough gig and having an ex-FBI special agent helping out on cases doesn’t always help. Malcolm Bright is really going to have to prove himself for Adele to keep him around.
Maddie Hasson for Audrey Collins for Teen Wolf: Liking herself as the ‘Giles’ of the group, Audrey is always looking into the supernatural creatures in and outside of Beacon Hills. Working more with Liam, Mason, and Corey, she likes to call them Team 2.0
Avan Jogia for Ben Irwin for Lucifer: A new CSI, Ben has been working alongside Ella Lopez. Unlike his partner, Ben is more of a cynic that doesn’t really believe in much... except for Ella. Of course, Lucifer Morningstar notices Ben’s attraction to her and now Ben is in for a ride.
Summer Bishil for Chloe Mitchell for Scream Queens: An old friend of Chanel’s, Chloe loves to prove she is the superior. She does so again and again by creating her own secret society, her own beauty line, and millions of fans on Instagram. Maybe that’s why she’s become a target for the Red Devil.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Jesse Lewis for Vampire Academy: A teacher at the St. Vlad’s, Mr. Lewis was one of the first to notice his student Lissa Dragomir’s powers were stranger than the others. He does his best to help his students control their power and becomes a major voice in teaching Moroi students self-defense.
Charlie Heaton for Michael Roman for Iron Fist: Michael has been working at Rand Enterprises since he graduated college. Hired by the Meachums to be Danny’s assistant, Michael has his work cut out for him with Danny. At least he doesn’t have any more dull days at work.
Jake Borelli for Taylor Kennedy for MacGyver: Working in the medical end of the Phoenix, Taylor is always in shock that Matty’s favorite team hasn’t killed themselves yet. Jumping out of windows, being shot at, and nothing is ever ordinary when it comes to Angus MacGyver. He is Jack Dalton’s ‘special project’ as he tries to get him out of his shell.
Antoinette Robertson for Spencer Church for Daredevil: A paralegal working at Nelson and Murdock, Spencer loves helping out people who can’t afford the expensive lawyers who care more about their paychecks than justice.
Can Yaman for Zack Heath for Swamp Thing: Zack is an old friend of Abby and Shauna’s when she was alive. He loves living in Marais and goes above and beyond for the community in any way he can. Having Abby back and dealing with Alec Holland proves that something evil is coming for his town. It is up to him and his friends, old and new, to save Marais.

2019 & 2010s Best/Worst
Because I like lists and cataloguing the dumb shit I cared about. As my brother once said after seeing and reviewing NOW YOU SEE ME on a lazy Sunday, ‘Some would say it was a waste of time, others might say it was a colossal waste of time.’
I’ll admit, it’s a bit over-the-top. Particularly including the Pats, but yeah, in the Tom Brady era that started when I was 14 as a Freshman in high school to 33 years old now and wrapping up soon-ish (?), there’s not a chance in hell I’ll care as intimately about this shit. I grew up with it at just the right time.

Michael Myers has come home, as Halloween 2018 is now available to stream online on Digital, with the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on the way, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
The new Halloween (read our review here) arrived on digital platforms today (Dec. 28), to be followed by various Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD combo options arriving on January 15, 2019. Read on for the official press release and the complete list of bonus features and technical specs.
The infamous killer Michael Myers strikes again in Halloween, arriving on Digital and via the digital movie app MOVIES ANYWHERE on December 28, 2018, as well as on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-rayTM, DVD and On Demand on January 15, 2019. Hailed by critics as “a near perfect blend of craft, character growth and nostalgia” (Perri Nemiroff, Collider), Halloween takes place four decades after Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween Franchise, “Scream Queens”) narrowly escaped the masked Michael Myers’ brutal killing spree.
Packed with bonus features including chilling deleted and extended scenes as well as special featurettes showing behind-the-scenes looks at creating the film, Halloween delivers spine-chilling, hair-raising intensity and thrills to both new and repeat viewers.
Forty years after the events of 1978’s Halloween, Laurie Strode (Curtis) now lives in a heavily guarded home on the edge of Haddonfield, where she’s spent decades preparing for Michael’s potential return. After being locked up in an institution, Myers manages to escape when a bus transfer goes terribly wrong, leading to chaos in the same town he preyed on decades earlier. Laurie now faces a terrifying showdown when the deranged killer returns for her and her family – but this time, she’s ready for him.
Master of horror John Carpenter (Halloween (1978), The Thing) joins forces with director David Gordon Green (Joe, Pineapple Express) and producers Jason Blum (Blumhouse), Malek Akkad (Trancas International Films) and Bill Block (Miramax) for this follow up to Carpenter’s 1978 classic horror film. Halloween also includes a stellar cast including Judy Greer (Ant-Man and The Wasp, Jurassic World), Andi Matichak (“Underground”), Will Patton (Armageddon, The Punisher), and Virginia Gardner (Project Almanac, “Runaways”). Proving “classics never die” (Mara Reinstein, US Weekly), Halloween offers a tricky treat for audiences both old and new. Halloween is the perfect slasher film, lauded as “hands down the best Halloween sequel ever” (Katie Walsh, Nerdist) and “immensely entertaining” (Eric Eisenberg, Cinemablend).

NFL Divisional Round Preview: By: Teej
It is a sad time of the year, but also the best time of the year! It is true its NFL playoff season, however that also means we are close to the end of the NFL season, only 11 total games left.
Quick recap from the wild card weekend, ready go. Eagles got a couple fingers on a last second field goal, Chargers forced a sack fumble to advance (Thank god), Colts dominated the Texans, and the Cowboys ran past the Seahawks. Now on to this week, where teams are playing to advance to the AFC & NFC championship games. All 4 match-ups are projected to be great games; all 8 teams are coming in hot into the playoffs.
AFC Match Ups
Colts at Chiefs (Saturday 4:35 pm)
The Indianapolis Colts come in at 10-6 after the regular season and starting 1-5. They are the first team to ever make the playoffs with a starting record of 1-5. The Colts are hot on both sides of the ball, defensively they have Darius Leonard who many think should without a doubt be Defensive Rookie of the year, he did after all make the All Pro Team (but not the Pro Bowl, not sure how that happens) The Colts also have a brick wall at the offensive line led by their 2018 1st round pick Quenton Nelson; or as he recently stated in an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show 2.0” you may also call him “Mean Son-of-a-Bitch”. Though they are young on both sides of the ball, they are complete on both sides of the ball. They have veteran leadership as well, Andrew Luck is fully back, as well a veteran presence in special teams with Adam Vinatieri.
The Kansa City Chiefs have been red hot all season, mainly due to this seasons soon to be MVP Patrick Mahomes II. Mahomes and the Chiefs finished the season 12-4 even with the 27th ranked defense; to be honest their defense is terrible, no two ways about it. The Chiefs did get their former all pro safety Eric Berry for only 2 games this season and is questionable for Sunday. The Chiefs need all the help they can get on that side of the ball. O and if you haven’t heard the Chiefs simply don’t win home playoff games, they have not won a home playoff game since Joe Montana did back in 1994. This is why I am taking the Colts in this game both to cover the spread (-5.5) as well as to win the game straight up.
Chargers at Patriots (Sunday 1:05 pm)
The LA Chargers come in to this game off a win against the Ravens where they stacked the box and shut down the high school offense of the Baltimore Ravens. They almost let it slip through their hands in the 4th quarter, but were able to stop the Ravens final drive with a forced fumble. The Chargers may be the deepest team left in the playoffs. They have young super stars on both sides of the ball as well has veterans, the Charges led the league with 7 pro bowlers, led by their captain and leader Philip Rivers who is trying to earn his first trip to the Super bowl and earn a ring like his two 2004 1st round counter parts . The Chargers are expected to have Melvin Gordon back for this game though he may not be 100% he is still a game changer, as well as are the Chargers wide receivers which just may be the deepest in the league, especially now that they are getting their promising young star tight end Hunter Henry back this Sunday. Their defense also is full of Talent from their D-line all the way back to their secondary. With stars at Defensive end (Joey Bosa), linebacker (Melvin Ingram), and Safety (Derwin James), these three super stars are the reason I am taking the Chargers on Sunday (-4).
As a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan its very rare for me to ever cheer for the New England Patriots, for obvious reason (Jesse caught it). Today is no different, I will not be rooting for the Patriots this weekend, nor do I think they have enough on either side of the ball to win. The one thing that the Patriots do have on their side is home field advantage (again) and the best coach and quarterback of all time. With these two people one the Patriots sideline you can never fully count out the Patriots. With that being said I don’t see how the Patriots have a chance to advance past this round. The destiny that I have come to hate may finally come to an end. Brady is not getting any younger, nor is Rob Gronkowski who has been dominate for so long but this year he has often looked very slow and beaten down. With Gronk looking slow, the Patriots having recently cut Josh Gordon (he got high again) and not much defensive depth, they are having to rely on Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan as well as pass catchers out of the back field (James White, Rex Burkhead). While they have a stud rookie running back in Sony Michael, I truly don’t think that is enough. However you can never count out Tom and Bill (God damnit just retire)
Cowboys at Rams (Saturday 8:15 pm)
Dallas comes in off a big win versus the Seattle Seahawks last week, where the offense ran through two weapons. Those weapons are Amari Cooper, and the NFL rushing leader Ezekiel Elliott, both offensive weapons went over 100+ scrimmage yards. I see that trend to continue for one of these young starts this week. I would fully expect Elliott to have 100+ scrimmage yards against the Rams; this offense goes through him this is no secret. Simply this game will come down to the Dallas Cowboys run game and the Rams front 7.
The LA Rams come in off their bye week they earn witha record of 13-3 where they were red hot all through the season, every football fan will remember their record breaking Monday night game versus the Chiefs with the final of 54-51 in favor of the Rams. The Rams are stacked on both sides of the ball, with their defense being led by Defensive player of the Year Aaron Donald. Some names fans may recognize on the defense besides Donald are Suh, Donte Fowler, Joyner, Peters, Shields, and Aqib Talib, unfortunately these names have not produced . In fact their defense has been by far their weakest link. Their offense is high powered but, Goff can be thrown off his game with just a little bit of pressure; they have arguably the best offensive weapon in Todd Gurley, as well as weapons at wide receiver in Brandin Cooks, and Robert Woods. The Rams surely miss their young star slot receiver Cooper Kupp however, who has been out since 10 with a torn ACL. With all that being said I do not see the Cowboys being able to keep up with the high powered Rams offense. Take the Rams to win but I would not take the Rams +7.
Eagles at Saints (Sunday 4:40 pm)
Philadelphia’s savior Big dick Nick is back into the playoffs again, they got past the Bears and now onto the New Orleans Saints. Well for all the Eagle fans I am sad to say Nick Foles magic will run out in the “Big Easy”. Though the offense has played better with Nick Foles under center, with the line blocking longer and giving Foles more time to launch deep balls to Jeffrey, as well as the reemergence of Darren Sproles. The Eagles defensive has been plague with injuries this season. No place has been hit harder by injuries than their defensive backs, they have gone through cornerbacks faster than I go through 2 ply after a night of beer and Taco Bell. Expect their Cornerbacks and Safeties to get bullied by Drew Bress and Michael Thomas.
“WHO DAT, WHO DAT SAY THEY GONNA BEAT THEM SAINTS” well I got some news it will not be the Eagles. The Saints come in off a bye and this gave the Saints much needed time to rest up and get healthy. The Saints were rolling early and throughout the season but their offense seemed to take a step back late. I fully expect the Saints to be healthy, prepared and ready to roll against the Eagles. The Saints have two great running backs in Ingram and Kamara, as well a young stud at wide out Michael Thomas, the Saints are also getting Tedd Ginn back this week which could open the Saints offense even more than it already was. The Saints defense turn around their season midway this year and we are seeing what we expected from them based off last year’s stats. Between the Saints weapons on offense and the Saints defense turning their season around expect them to cover (+8).
Hope you’ll sit back and enjoy the games both Saturday and Sunday, enjoy a couple of brews while watching. Here is to the Patriots being out this round!

So I have been marathoning a LOT of Midsomer Murders recently (it’s good when you have insomnia), so here are some of my miscellaneous observations/opinions:
1. As a negative: it’s all very very white. The later seasons seem to be making a sincere effort in improving diversity and representation, but they’ve still got a ways to go. They’ve also never had a woman as either the lead detective or as one of the Detective Sergeants, which I nickname “the Robins” because they’re all dark haired, vaguely interchangeable young male sidekicks.
1b. There are some differences: Troy is an earnest idiot, Scott is kind of a dick, Jones is competent, Nelson’s kind of like a terrier, and I don’t have a good read on Winter yet. He seems a little uptight. I suppose if you think about it, that does track pretty hilariously with Dick, Jason, Tim, Stephanie and Damian. I don’t think Winter is either Barnaby’s literal son though.
1c. Really though, the next Robin really should be a woman. Ideally, a woman of color.
2. They do seem to have made an effort to include LGBT+ representation. However, the execution is a bit spotty, especially in early episodes. And they seem to be a little over reliant on the promiscuous bisexual trope.
3. I do like when they have Tom Barnaby explicitly call out Troy’s (Robin #1) homophobia though. “You are less politically correct than a Nuremburg rally” is still a great line.
4. It is remarkably refreshing to see a detective/mystery show in which the main character(s) have healthy marriages, good relationships with their children (to be fair, Betty is a baby), and generally are nice, competent, functional people.
4b. They even seem to like their wives and enjoy their company.
5. Even the Robins, despite being single young men with no immediate families until they’re spiritually adopted by the Barnabys, seem to be remarkably well adjusted.
6. At no point do the Barnabys or their Robins ever Take This Case Personal. Even when the case involves their friends, they still do their damn jobs.
6b. There was one episode where Jones (Robin #3) seemed close to Taking This Case Personally, out of guilt because he gave the murder victim the brush off pre-murder, but Tom Barnaby has this lovely little exchange with him that goes something like “What is this case about?” “The murderer.” “What is it not about?” “Us.”
7. Both Barnabys are a little too happy to forgo search warrants, but I don’t know enough about British law to know exactly how close to the line they’re skirting.
8. Many other people have made this same joke, but it is AMAZING that Midsomer has any people left alive. Real estate must be remarkably cheap.
9. There also seems to be a LOT of incest on this show. To the point where I side-eye any sibling set as soon as they’re introduced.
10. There don’t seem to be any rape/sexual assault plots. Or at least not in the episodes I’ve seen. There is, of course, the incest, but it’s presented as consensual (at least as consensual as incest can be given power dynamics) and/or unwitting.
11. There is however a murder that involves a wheel of cheese. And at one point, there’s a chase scene involving a tractor.
12. It is pretty hilarious that every time poor Joyce Barnaby gets a hobby someone dies. And since this is Midsomer, that woman has a crazy amount of hobbies.
13. Ben Jones (Robin #3) comes close to having a similarly insane amount of hobbies. His tend to be more tangential to the plot though. Like Joyce will join a club and someone will die. Whereas Jones tends to just come up with some relevant hobby related info or use a relevant skill at some useful time in the investigation.
13b. It’s still equally contrived though, as there is a string of episodes in a row, where it’s like: this murder is on a golf course and relates to golf...Jones plays golf and explains the terminology to Barnaby. This next murder involves a couple of paintings, in which key clues are found in the pigs and the way one of the figures casts his line to fish. Jones happens to be a fisherman who recognizes the cast. (He also recognizes the pigs.). The NEXT episode involves a cricket game. And of course Jones plays cricket.
The dude also salsa dances, sings operatic tenor, vaults fences like a gymnast, and is a former Mason.
I mean, I appreciate that the writers have finally figured out that Barnaby’s sidekick doesn’t need to be an idiot in order to showcase how smart Barnaby is, but there’s a such thing as overcompensation. It’s a little ridiculous.
I haven’t seen all the Jones episodes, so I’m predicting an episode involving murder by hot air balloon and Jones reveals that he has been an aeronaut for years.
13c. Tangentially, it’s during Jones’s run that the show writers apparently learned about the concept of “fan service” and went, okay, we’re going to try this for one episode. They do this by having Jones grow a beard and wear hipster glasses (which, to be fair, really worked for him), infiltrate a cult which has free love as one of their tenets so the poor guy is propositioned constantly, and top it off there was a gratuitous naked shower scene.
I’m not complaining, mind you. It’s just really funny.
13d. I may be on a lowkey hunt for any and all John Barnaby (Barnaby 2.0)/Sarah Barnaby/Ben Jones threesome fic. I don’t feel remotely guilty about this, since this Barnaby is only about nine years older than Jones. Also, the power dynamic elements are mostly mitigated since Jones has Nightwinged up and flown the bat cave. I may be mixing my metaphors even as I mix up my Robins. That said, Jones is totally the sort to insist on saying “sir” in bed.
14. There is a lot of tawdry sex everywhere in this series. On the novel side, quite a bit of the tawdry sex involves actual old people. As it turns out, scandalous behavior doesn’t just fizzle when you turn fifty-five or so.
15. I want to write a crossover where Jessica Fletcher is Tom Barnaby’s mom.
16. Winter does seem to break the trend where to be a sidekick of the Barnabys you have to be either an idiot or Welsh.
17. If you live in the British Countryside, avoid any festivals, folk music concerts, historical reenactments, fundraisers, or development projects, or you will die.
18. Also, try not to be a vicar. Because you are likely to be evil or die.
19. Try not to have any secrets, because you will be blackmailed, and either you or the blackmailer will die.
20. Also, if you have an illegitimate child with your brother, and go off on the run, you should probably tell your son about his extended family before he goes off and accidentally bangs his aunt.

Leave Nelson B – 2.0: Phantom | Instrumental Project

Leave Nelson B releases his latest project “2.0: Phantom”, a sampling project.
The producer worked the source material coming from music released by his record label, Lonely Ghost. What started out as one song became an exercise in falling in love with music all over again. The bulk of this project was done while Leave Nelson B was in therapy and the emotions he was faced with came to live in…

The Steelers are making a big, but risky, bet on their future

And if it doesn’t work out, they’re screwed.
By trading next year’s first-round pick to Miami for ascendant safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Steelers are saying one of two things. Either:
1. They’re entirely confident Ben Roethlisberger can return to full strength or something comparable in 2020 and 2021, when he’ll be 38 and 39 years old, or 2. They’re entirely confident in Mason Rudolph, 2019’s backup-turned-starter thanks to Roethlisberger’s torn UCL.
Pittsburgh sold off its opportunity to draft a franchise quarterback in a passer-rich 2020 NFL Draft in exchange for the chance to cultivate Fitzpatrick into its next great center fielder. Bringing in a high-ceiling second-year safety isn’t entirely a win-now move, but it does address the team’s primary weakness through an 0-2 start. It also tips the Steelers’ hand as to its expectations for the future. So long, theoretical top-five rookie quarterback pick; hello, rebuilt Steel Curtain defense.
The question now is whether Rudolph and an injured/aging Roethlisberger can do enough with a depleted offense to make this move work. If not, passing up a potential franchise cornerstone for the second straight year could be the mistake that keeps Pittsburgh in football purgatory.
With Roethlisberger out and the offense foundering, Pittsburgh invested in its defense
In a vacuum, the move makes sense. The Pittsburgh offense has been dealt blow after blow the past two seasons. Contributors like Le’Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, and Jesse James departed. Roethlisberger is done for the season and starting tailback James Conner left Week 2’s loss to the Seahawks due to injury, though he’s slated to return to the lineup in Week 3. Contingency plans like Donte Moncrief (three catches on 11 targets) and James Washington (four on nine) have failed to pay off so far.
That’s going to make it incredibly difficult for an inexperienced backup quarterback like Rudolph to win a shootout, so general manager Kevin Colbert is trying to create an environment where he doesn’t have to. The Steelers’ passing defense has been its shortcoming in 2019, giving up 8.3 net yards per attempt — the 28th best mark in the league. Part of that is due to the fact they’ve faced a pair of MVP candidates early on in Tom Brady and Russell Wilson, but plenty of good passers still loom on their schedule.
Freeing Fitzpatrick from the Dolphins, who currently have all the structural soundness of a gingerbread house, will bring some much-needed stability to his budding career, and it should make Pittsburgh better. The problem is this team has failed to be more than the sum of its parts in recent years. The Steelers have talent at all three levels and mostly look like they should field an upper-tier defense. Instead, they’ve cracked the top 10 in yards given up per play only once since 2013.
This trade was made in the hopes Fitzpatrick can be the unifying force that brings them all together. He might be — and we’ll get to that later — but the most important part of the Pittsburgh lineup right now remains Rudolph. If he can’t jump-start the offense, then the Steelers could go from sending a mid-round pick for their starting safety — one who’ll need a costly extension in 2021 should he live up to expectations — to giving up a top-five pick.
Can Rudolph keep this from being a lopsided trade?
The second-year quarterback has shown signs of growth in 2019. After serving as the team’s third-string passer last fall, he showed enough through the preseason to convince Colbert to trade Joshua Dobbs to the Jaguars in September.
Rudolph paid off that faith with an encouraging, if not spectacular, performance in his first ever regular season action last Sunday. He completed 12 of his 19 passes for 112 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and one interception in a 28-26 loss. He led Pittsburgh on three scoring drives and would have had the chance for a fourth had the defense been able to get the ball back after kicking off to the Seahawks with 5:34 remaining in the game.
But that came against a Seahawks secondary that allowed Andy Dalton to lead the league in passing yards just a week before. Rudolph brings more questions than answers to the Pittsburgh offense, but the recent success of Big 12 air raid-style passers suggests he could live up to expectations in the Steel City.
Of course, the team’s most recent Big 12 QB draftee before Rudolph turned out to be XFL star Landry Jones. The Steelers are hopeful their new project from an Oklahoma institution of higher education will turn out better than the last.
If he can’t, there’s always next year. And Fitzpatrick’s presence could make it easier for a 38-year-old Ben Roethlisberger to bring Pittsburgh back to relevance in 2020.
Roethlisberger’s run through the late-2010s has been dotted with subtle and not-so-subtle hints about a potential retirement. His statement after hearing he’d miss the rest of the season strongly indicates he’ll be back next fall.

— BigBen7.com (@_BigBen7) September 16, 2019
The Steelers appear to have taken that statement to heart. They passed up the opportunity to draft Lamar Jackson in 2018, opting for defensive support in T.J. Watt and later landing on Rudolph late in the third round as a developmental “maybe” behind their star quarterback.
The Fitzpatrick trade is a similar decision. This time, however, instead of giving up a late first-rounder, the pick being burned to boost the defense could wind up landing in the top 10.
What can Fitzpatrick bring to the Steelers?
Fitzpatrick could be great. He just isn’t there yet. The former Alabama All-American and 11th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft got moved all over the Miami defense, playing at least 90 snaps at box safety, slot corner, outside corner and free safety as a rookie, per Pro Football Focus. He was most effective isolated from the sideline, where he earned high marks in slot coverage while struggling in more traditional cornerback roles.
The Dolphins wanted him to be their Swiss Army knife in a hole-filled secondary; the kind of player who could team with Xavien Howard to take on any job his coaches asked of him. Fitzpatrick wasn’t happy with the frequent switchups, which precluded his trade request in Miami. He’ll take on a more defined role in Pittsburgh, where Joe Haden and Steven Nelson will handle outside duties at corner. Fitzpatrick is slated to pair with fellow 2018 first-rounder Terrell Edmunds in the team’s top-line safety rotation.
Edmunds improved throughout his rookie season at strong safety, and this trade sets him in place as the anchor that lets Fitzpatrick drift around the defensive backfield without coming unmoored. Limiting his focus and playing to his strengths should allow Fitzpatrick to flourish, especially with a talented, if disorganized, roster around him.
It’s not hard to see what the Steelers are going for here. Fitzpatrick’s arrival gives them a long list of young, athletic talent (Edmunds, Bud Dupree, T.J. Watt, Devin Bush, et al) behind the defensive line. But they’re older at cornerback, so luring a versatile safety who can add double-team help in a pinch is especially useful. If Haden and Nelson can keep from giving up the sideline, Fitzpatrick will be there to help — and he’ll have to with the suddenly explosive Browns, Ravens, and huh, even the Bengals (12 yards per catch) residing in the AFC North.
That’s not all he’ll bring to the table. If Pittsburgh needs someone to line up against top slot receivers like Jarvis Landry, Tyler Boyd, Keenan Allen, or Cooper Kupp — all of whom remain on the schedule — the newest Steeler will be the man to do it. Miami may have moved Fitzpatrick around too much without the support system needed to help him grow, but Mike Tomlin has the flexibility to shift him from deep coverage to a man-to-man position in the slot without sacrificing quality elsewhere.
Pittsburgh’s biggest problem on defense the past season and a half was the massive vacuum left behind by Ryan Shazier’s absence. While Fitzpatrick can’t replace that, he can provide the additional layer of coverage that allows Edmunds to sneak closer to the line of scrimmage and some of the receiver/tight end shadowing and tailback-thumping power Shazier once brought to the lineup.
If Fitzpatrick turns into the Troy Polamalu successor the club’s dreamed of and Rudolph is a worthy successor to Big Ben, this is a great deal for Pittsburgh. If Fitzpatrick gives the team an above-average starting presence in the slot and Roethlisberger plays well until he’s 40, it’s a solid trade. But if Fitzpatrick remains uncomfortable playing out of position, Rudolph is Landry Jones 2.0, and a nearly 40-year-old Roethlisberger can’t recover from a season-ending injury, the Steelers are screwed.
Pittsburgh made a big bet with a high ceiling but a catastrophic floor. If 2019 was going to be a lost season, the team could at least take solace in the high-value draft pick that would follow. Now that safety net is gone — and it’s up to a former Dolphin and a third-round quarterback to keep the Steelers from crashing to the NFL’s underworld.
