Got my BETA unit & IMO, what "Project Ara" could have been for Smartphones, "B.L.O.C.K.S." IS for Smartwatches!

Aquesta activitat consistia en fer un dibuix amb les diferents tonalitats que podem trobar a partir d’un color primari. En el meu cas, vaig elegir el color blau i el vaig anar aclarint (posant color blanc) o enfosquint (posant verd fosc o marró). També vaig utilizar l’aigua sobre el paper per a que es projectara millor l’efecte aiguós de l’aquarel·la.

Com es veu en les fotografies, vaig fer un ull que comprenia quasi tota la pàgina. La veritat és que no hi ha una raó per explicar la meua elecció, se’m va ocórrer fer un ull i vaig anar fent-lo a mesura que anava fent les mescles.

Anar fent, creant, descobrint colors, investigant formes... eixe va ser el procés que vaig seguir; una tècnica útil en l’enseyança per a estimular i fomentar la pròpia activitat de l’alumnat.

New Project Ara MDK released ahead of second developers conference

The Ara team has developed a new contactless connection system between modules and endoskeleton to save space, cost and to improve durability. The team also introduced a new software protocol called “Greybus”, which handles the communications between the endoskeleton and the modules. The Ara users will manage the functions of the modules with the Ara Manager app that will be introduced in future updates. This app will provide users all the detailed information on the modules attached to their device and will allow to swap them when they want. 

This MDK provides an overview of the new Ara Module Marketplace, an e-commerce portal that enables a two-sided market between module developers and consumers. Google will help module manufacturers with the sale, the payment processing and will verify that the modules are safe and that they respect all the technical specifications. A third party logistic provider will manage the storage, shipping and all trade issues.

In case you're not familiar, the idea behind Project Ara is that you can basically build your own phone. Google provides an "endoskeleton" which holds a whole bunch of hot-swappable modules that act like a miniature network, adding up to a complete device. You can pull them out and replace them with other modules anytime you want—say, trading your speakerphone for a pollution sensor on the fly. Or start with an endoskeleton with a BlackBerry-sized screen and physical keyboard, perhaps, instead of a modern pebble-like design.

The smartphone is one of the most empowering and intimate objects in our lives. Yet most of us have little say in how the device is made, what it does, and how it looks. Conosciamo tutti bene il mondo degli smartphone, le loro potenzialità, il loro ruolo nelle nostre vite ed i loro limiti. Probabilmente però non ci rendiamo conto di quanto possa essere veloce la loro evoluzione. La crescità delle potenzialità di questi apparecchi negli ultimi anni può essere definita esponenziale, basti pensare che, non considerando il Simon di IBM, ed il Nokia 9000 (”smartphone” primitivi che non trovarono effettiva richiesta sul mercato) dall’uscita del primo vero smartphone (IPhone di Apple nel 2007) ad oggi sono passati pochi anni. In questo breve lasso di tempo le loro capacità sono notevolmente migliorate, tutto questo è stato possibile grazie ad un costante potenziamento della tecnologia su cui si basano ed è già da qualche anno ormai che si parla di smartphone modulari.

Inizialmente partorito da Motorola (acquisita poi da Google) Project Ara è un progetto volto all’ideazione ed all’implementazione di una nuova generazione di smartphone cosidetti “modulari”. In generale, l’idea di fondo è che si possa personalizzare l’hardware del proprio dispositivo in modo tale da porterne migliorare le caratteristiche. Ogni device si baserà su una sorta di telaio metallico che nasconderà le interconnessioni tra i vari moduli (Esempio: display, tecnologia Wi-Fi, processore, RAM, ecc.), in questo modo ognuno potrà scegliere il posizionamento dei moduli e la loro effettiva potenza. Ovviamente le riparazioni e sostituzioni saranno notevolmente facilitate anche per i semplici utenti ed il prezzo, per chi avesse diverse necessità economiche, sarebbe notevolmente contenuto scegliendo una configurazione da device entry-level. Come ogni nuova tecnologia Ara ha degli svantaggi, alcuni possiamo già intuirli altri sicuramente verranno scovati nel tempo: questi nuovi smartphone saranno più spessi a discapito dell’ergonomia e una normale batteria probabilmente non coprirà l’intera giornata, sicuramente piccole problematiche che con il tempo saranno risolte.

Google ha dichiarato di voler rilasciare entro la fine del 2015 in Porto Rico i prototipi di Project Ara per comprenderne le capacità e per indagare sulla possibile richiesta del mercato. In sostanza il Porto Rico sarà un mercato limitato che farà da pilota per il fututo rilascio di questi innovativi smartphone. Sappiamo ancora poco sul prezzo effettivo ma tutti noi appasionati di tecnologia non vediamo l’ora di avere tra le mani questo nuovo gioiellino proveniente da Mountain View.

Ora potremmo chiederci: questo può davvero essere il futuro del mondo degli smartphone? I destinatari di questa nuova tecnologia, con i nuovi strumenti messi a loro disposizione, avranno abbastanza conoscenze tecniche per poter sfruttare al meglio le potenzialità di questi nuovi device? O la possibilità di personalizzazione sarà al contrario solo una limitazione?

As we’ve been building the product, we’ve also been building the Project ARA brand. We have ideas about what the brand should stand for, what it should say, what it should do and what the overall energy of it should be.

While our ideas are well and good, we’re quite curious about what you think.

So, what’s a brand mood board exactly?

Mood boards are a collection of images, colors and textures that represent a brand. They should be inspiring and bring to life what a brand is all about.

So our mission to you is this: in the next three days, photograph and tag at least three images, colors and/or textures from your world that you think best represents all the goodness that Project ARA can be.
