'Project Palisade' launched to Safeguard Elderly victims of burglary

In a bid to enhance the support system for elderly victims of burglary, detectives in west London have rolled out a pioneering project called 'Project Palisade.' This groundbreaking initiative involves a collaborative effort between the police, local council, and the NHS to ensure comprehensive assistance is available to seniors affected by burglary. Under the project, a range of services are offered to victims, ranging from police officers connecting with organizations like AgeUK for emotional support to facilitating referrals to the council for the installation of new alarms or locks. These measures are designed to help victims regain a sense of security following the traumatic experience of a burglary. The project also focuses on proactive crime prevention by raising awareness within the community. Police officers actively engage with the public at various venues, disseminating information about the modus operandi of criminals who often target the elderly. Bespoke leaflets containing preventive advice are distributed at key locations such as GP surgeries and pharmacies to educate residents on safeguarding their homes. Authorities acknowledge the prevalence of organized criminal groups targeting older individuals who live alone. The criminals often exploit the trust of their victims by impersonating trusted figures, such as employees from utility services. These deceitful acts are commonly executed in proximity to roadworks or water repairs, adding an element of authenticity to their schemes. In an innovative move, 'Project Palisade' has forged a partnership with Thames Water to access information about planned roadworks across West London. Neighbourhood police teams utilize this data to deploy strategically to these areas, warning residents about the potential risks associated with criminal activities, especially those involving impersonation near ongoing road repairs. This collaborative effort not only seeks to provide immediate support to victims but also aims to create a safer environment by preemptively addressing the root causes of such crimes. 'Project Palisade' stands as a commendable example of inter-agency cooperation in the ongoing fight against crimes targeting vulnerable members of the community. Detective Inspector Tom Collins, who set up the project, said: “The impact of burglaries on anyone – but especially the elderly community who often live alone – cannot be underestimated. We know that their trauma does not end when the burglary is over but rather it often leaves them feeling anxious, depressed and unable to feel safe in their homes again. “Investigating these crimes is paramount but we should not overlook the emotional trauma caused and we must play our part in helping tackle this. This could vie for possibly being the freakiest underwater experience I have had. The seven colours of our colour spectrum are absorbed one by one the deeper you go because water is denser than air. That makes it difficult for colours to pass through this density and reach our eyes. Imagine being at the exact depth where the colour red disappears and then have a look at your dive buddy’s predominantly red wetsuit. Now that’s some real life CGI! Eventually, you are left with the loss of the colour blue at 60 meters below the surface. Artificial lights and colour filters for your underwater cameras will help you there. Case in point, this bright sandy bottom which has been captured by a colour filter. Notice the change in colour as I rise and fall slightly. . . Helping raise AWAREness for the Dive Campers

This summer (2018) Ocean Turtle Diving organised a Dive Camp for young people to attend to learn to dive over an intensive week of training. After three tough days completing their theory, exams and in the water, we gave them the option of learning about projectAWARE and they were all really enthusiastic about doing this.

I have previously run several instances of the project AWARE course but never for young people so it was a case of stepping into the unknown.

I have written my own introduction to the course that highlights the specific issues that are most relevant and relatable to the audience and during this, the whole group were really engaged and made this section of the course a really interesting discussion rather than a lecture. ��

I came up with a couple of interactive tasks for them to get stuck into once the theory section had been completed and I also incorporated a short workshop devised by the Marine Conservation Society as I am a Sea Champion for them which they all really enjoyed too.

The first task that they had to do was to design and make a poster based on one of the 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean and then present back why they had chosen that particular tip and what they thought is most important about it and how you can use it to make a difference.

All of the presentations on this were absolutely brilliant and the whole group were fully engaged and passionate about the subject they had chosen. They stood up and explained their posters and choices with a lot of confidence and I think that we all learned something from each and every one of the students in the room.

The second task was again, really hands on. As September 2018 is the month when Project AWARE week will be taking place, we asked them to come up with a display for the shop floor within Ocean Turtle Diving to promote all of the activities that will be taking place. The results were awesome and I think that it will really grab the attention of everyone that comes into the Dive Centre over the coming month.

All in all it was one of the most fun and interactive project AWARE courses that I have run and I am now really looking forward to running the next course during AWARE week!
