I hate everything I got
-couldn't get the screen protector to stick at the corners without bubbles or a speck of dust getting in
-magnetic screen protector (paper feel) doesn't register pencil at first
-case flap only magnetizes on the front, meaning it flops around limply if I'm holding the machine flat.
-case can't accommodate pencil grip
-pencil grip looks stupid, hard to get on
#should I try a screen protector again or just give up#it frustrates me that the official folio case doesn't have drop protection. but ones with drop protection necessarily prevent me#from switching to keyboard easily#idk what's best to do i just want it to last as long as possible

The Only Reason
[Yandere!Sung Jinwoo x Worker!Reader]
Note: I have no idea what to call this AU, but I don't think a lot of people will read this so... Haha~ Mental AU? Chaos AU?
Update! This AU is called Mana Chaos AU! Plus there's Part 2 up!!
Part 1 (here) 一 Part 2 — Part 3 — Part 4

Once, the world’s strongest Hunters were revered as humanity’s saviours and heroes for the weak and ordinary. They were once treated like celebrities and hold the highest power and authority. They were respected, praised, and idolized. They still were, now, with a hint of fear.
It all happened due to the infamous incident now dubbed as <The Outrage Incident>. It happened like any other day, in any other country, in any other city. But to only that one strong Hunter. He was an S-Rank Mage, a successful and loved one at that. The story goes like this.
One day, this powerful Hunter was out on the street enjoying a day off, but something set him off and he used his powerful ability to set things right. It would have been the end of it since an S-Rank’s threat was enough to make the majority crumble. However, his power got out of control and caused an outrage to his being. He was using his powers in public and there was no dungeon outbreak or monsters nearby for him. No amount of justification could calm the public.
After that one incident, other countries’ S-Rank or higher started to experience a similar issue. The worst case was that even Healers of their level didn’t escape such a phenomenon. Soon, the public feared the strong protectors they once saw as shields and swords against the gates.
Researchers and scientists were put to work quickly to investigate why and how this issue was happening now. The answer was in the overflowing mana levels within their bodies that couldn’t be contained since the human body was weak and frail for such a change. Addition to that, it correlated to the Hunter’s emotional level and their control. Institutions were built to imprison house the S-Ranks while monitoring their situation.
Whenever an S-Rank’s mana levels and emotions show signs of <Outrage>, a term they now use to describe the Hunter going haywire with their powers on everything and anything around them, they will be sent to a dungeon alone. In the people’s eyes, it was better for that one Hunter to die in battle than kill innocents. Because at first, it was only the S-Ranks, but then some A-Ranks would fall victim to <Outrage> as well.
The professionals have named the correlation as Emotional Mana, EM for short, which made way for the Emotional Mana Institution, EMI for strong Hunters. The Hunters were treated like mental patients or worse, forced into a straitjacket and some had a muzzle for certain Hunters. These were specially designed and created items that limit and restricts a Hunter’s use of their powers and abilities.
It was a miracle that someone managed to create such equipment. That someone was also targetted by the S-Ranks after being announced and killed for such a disrespectful act, still the blueprints and prototypes were created and other talents that took over were able to finalize the perfect form.
“Personnel 002, you were specifically requested by SM-10.”
You looked up from your laptop and paused in your rapid typing for just a few second before you looked back to your screen and continued typing. That code name was to protect you and everyone else that worked in EMI or have some form of connection to it, so that no innocent is sacrificed for the greater good. Still, you can’t get used to it nor do you want to. “I’m busy.”
“Please… SM-10 is way too picky with the people that enters his cell.” This person, Supervisor 843, was one of the newest employee to join the crew. Though, unlike the name of the duty, they were people that were disposable hence the frequent newcomers and high number. “Please help me.”
You sighed and glared up at the person who had a mask over their head and a voice changer to mask their identity. Though, with the way they were speaking, you could deduce this person was a ‘she’. You got up and snatched the file extended to you. Just when you thought you could rest and work in peace, trouble comes knocking on your door. “Get me a drink and some refreshment, I want to see it on my desk by the time I’m back.”
“Yes? Yes!” Supervisor 843 bowed and clapped her hands together, “I’ll do so!”
As swiftly and automatically, you made your way through the hallways and doorways, tapping your access card to unlock needed doors and lifts for your travel. On the way, other Supervisors nodded their heads and bowed in your presence when you walked by. Unlike them who wear a uniform, you only have a lab coat over your usual outfits. You don’t even have a mask or voice changer.
Why?
You stood in front of the door that was labelled in bold ‘SM-10’, meaning the 10th S-Rank in Korea that belonged to the Mage class. The guard dressed in black from head to toe nodded their heads at you before they started unlocking the various security checkpoints and locks for you to enter into a battlefield in its own right.
“Will one hour be enough, Personnel 002?” One of the guards asked.
“Not sure, just be alert in case I need to rush out.” You spoke stoically with indifference.
Step by step, you walked in, announcing loudly of your arrival to the individual inside. The doors closed behind you and locked you inside with what everyone feared. You sighed and put away your glasses since there was no need for it right now. The room was eerily silent and cold, something you were long used to.
You took a few more steps, walking deeper into the room where it seemed to get darker and darker even though the lights in all housed Hunters would be on 24/7 to monitor their actions and activities within the room.
Just when your vision failed you to the point where you can’t see what was in front of you, you were enveloped in a pair of strong arms, your entire form effortlessly pulled back till your back was pressed against a firm wall of muscle one would call chest and abs. Hair tickled one side of your cheek and neck, you felt a breath cooed before a deep voice rang in your ear, “I’ve been waiting for my favourite Personnel~”
It wasn’t at all odd that your name was called as well, if it was someone like him, he’d know everything there was to know. In fact, everyone should be worshipping him right now for his controlled and well-mannered behaviour. Especially when he could have destroyed this entire facility and killed everyone in it within seconds if he so wished.
“Jinwoo. I need to work, don’t bully the newcomers.” You sighed while looking to the side as if making eye contact with him.
“I like it when you call me by name and not some code, thanks for that.” Jinwoo hummed as he played with your fingers. “I guess I’ll think about it. It’s a bit bored here, you understand.”
“You removed your straitjacket again.” You let him fiddle with your fingers as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. “You’ll get caught one of these days and then it’ll be game over.”
“Igris helped me remove it. You know how they are with seeing me constrained and imprisoned here.” He chuckled and leaned back, but it turned out he was just taking a seat, presumably on his bed since you still couldn’t see anything in the darkness. “Don’t worry, I’ve made sure no one could see me free and they didn’t kill anyone. Yet.”
Every Hunter that was admitted into the EMI was evaluated and thoroughly investigated to create the perfect profile for reference. All their fighting style, powers and abilities, weapons of choice, gear type, and any other detail was accounted down. It was all for people to be prepared in case one would have an <Outrage> and they were needed to be countered by weaker Hunters.
For Jinwoo, however, his profile was lacking to put it in the best terms. His mana levels were unmeasureable, yes, so he was placed as an S-Rank. Though, his powers and abilities were unknown. Since he was a Reawakened Hunter, most would assume he was the same class as he was as an E-Rank; a Fighter Class. But he exhibit <Telekinese> and <Shadow Manipulation> so he was placed as into Mage class.
That wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg.
You saw through his innocence and lie, uncovering his true powers and abilities. To be honest, even if you told your higher-ups of Jinwoo’s secrets, there was nothing they could do to counter it. Jinwoo was a league of his own and only you knew it. He was no mere S-Rank, he was definitely a National Level Hunter.
Ah, yes. The question as to why you don’t wear a mask or bother having done anything to hide your identity. It was not because you’ve been in one of the people who has been in service of EMI for the longest time or wanted something as shallow as respect from the newcomers or other coworkers. It was completely because you knew it was useless to hide when someone like Sung Jinwoo had his eyes on you.
“I’ll try and arrange a dungeon for you to raid.” You marked down on your phone while Jinwoo continued to treat you like a teddy bear.
“You have to join though. If you don’t…” Jinwoo’s voice went deeper as glowing eyes stared at you from the shadows, “I don’t know what I’ll do to get your attention…”
You nodded, pushing down the urge to flinch or jerk away from him. It was normal, something you expected but still unnerving to hear with your own ear from his lips. You swear this place made the Hunters mad in the head, it was a place that made them sick and mentally ill, it wasn’t actually helping them at all. “Yeah, of course. I’m sure everyone will be relieved to hear it.”
Jinwoo smirked as his arms tightened around you, his face buried between your neck and shoulder. “You’re the only reason I stay here. Remember that. If you leave here… Leave me… I’ll do what Thomas Andre did to America.”
Note: I can't help it, it was supposed to upload the requested ones first, but then this idea hit me like a truck (without the isekai part), so now here it is. There are like 2 requested stories written and ready to be posted, but I'm double checking and stuff. Hope you like this AU/idea.

Actually, I'm going to count this 4koma as a major Mafudad win.

Basically what it's talking about here is that Mafudad got his daughter a new laptop.
This laptop, however, is protected in more ways than the previous one:, protective case, keyboard cover and a screen protector. Probably because of what happened to Mafuyu's phone (glu glu glu🫧)
It's so impressive that even Kanade mentions she thinks Mafudad is too protective.
So unless it's some kind of scheme of manipulation, which I doubt, this man just went out of his way to secure his daughter's happiness. Something no other adult in Mafuyu's life has done previously.
I'm not saying he should be forgiven but. Maybe he's not that bad

VI & JINX + do-overs
powder 'dies' with vander, jinx 'dies' with warwick. what changes? why must it happen again in order to move on?
from the minute vi and jinx appear on screen, we as the audience are taught that they are doomed to be separated by the circumstances, over and over again.
their fight in episode three of season one seals their fate as doomed siblings, but one thing prevents them from fully moving on from each other and i believe it to be a mix of trauma and lack of space to properly mourn their broken bond.
right after their confrontation, vi is imprisoned for almost a decade and unable to reach her little sister, and jinx falls under silco's wing, fed with lies about vi's intentions, manipulated into believing he's the only person jinx can rely on.
neither of them get the space to mourn what was taken away at such a young age, ergo, they're not ready to let go of each other.
for vi, her role as a protector is never eased off her shoulders, even in prison her only goal is to return to powder, with no other desire for herself. for jinx, her attatchment issues and her need to fill the roles other people have assigned for her to fit in (silco & building weapons, zaun & becoming a symbol) prevents her from letting herself explore who she actually wants to be.
their first encounter back in episode six of season one fail to bring them back together--precisely because their dynamic continues to be the same as when they were kids, not taking into acount how much they have changed since then--but the sisters are given a second chance to try and rebuild their connection, and that is through warwick's arc. jinx says so herself: 'maybe this is like a do-over.'
vi and jinx have been shaped around their worst memory together--the night of vander's death--and it is through that mutual agreement of helping him that they are able to heal that wound.
with isha, jinx learns the weight of one's actions and understands just how much responsibility vi was burdened with when she was only a child herself. isha's death is the key to understand why vi told powder to stay behind during episode three of season one.
in vi's case, i see two things happening: for starters, she gets the space to properly mourn her family. the 'remember me' montage is supposed to show us warwick's healing process, but as the sequence continues, we start seeing more and more of vi, to the point the audience is only witnessing her memories.
the second point is her de-parentification, which also happens to benefit jinx's growth: understanding that jinx is also an adult who has survived without vi's help for a long time, who has accomplished things without her big sister's assistance, releases vi of her burden as the protector.
in return, jinx is no longer a victim of vi's protection, she's no longer expected to behave a certain way. she's finally seen as an equal, not an inferior. vi trusts jinx's judgement, she takes her viewpoints into account ('what do you think?' - 'you actually want my opinion?'). what does this do for jinx? it allows her to stop fearing abandonment over not fitting certain expectations from others.
overall, i believe they manage to heal a small piece of their inner child, which is the one that's been frozen in time since the incident at the cannery. they have a long road ahead of themselves, but now they're ready to face tragedy with the slight difference that no mental burden wil stop them from eventually healing.
they're ready to say goodbye again.

RWRB Thoughts: Height Difference
Today on Meraki's rwrb thoughts because this movie and book are implanted in my brain now, we're talking about the movie size difference
Don't get me wrong, book height firstprince is adorable, but there's just something about the movie height difference that just feels so special.
The thing is, the height difference between movie firstprince, or in other words Taylor and Nick's height difference isn't that big (ok I tried to search online for the precise number but there are a bunch of different fucking answers in different units but my point still stands you can see it)
But somehow, it's so prominent when you put them two together, especially when they're holding each other.
And think about it from Henry's perspective: Henry's not small. He's taller than both his siblings and his best friend Percy. he's about the exact same height as Shaan and as much as I know they care deeply about each other, at the end of the day, that's his equerry, his employee. His grandfather is taller than him, but that's the King, so that comes with this sense of authority and intimidation. So in most cases, he's the taller one, the bigger one. The one that has to be the support, the one that has to stand on his own. (so essentially my "oldest daughter/sister" rant but when it comes to height)
But when with Alex, suddenly he's the smaller one. To the man who would fight the whole world to protect him, to make him happy, the man who he loves and who loves him more than anyone in the world. Look at how Alex holds Henry: he curls around him, almost like a shield.
"You don't need your armour anymore, I'll be here to protect you and your heart from now on."
Actually, it's not just Henry, to a less emotionally intense extent, it's Nick too: In M&G, when it comes to the guys George/Nick has physically intimate scenes with: Tony (King James) is shorter than him, Dylan (Peter Carr) is shorter than him, Laurie (Robert Carr) is about the same height, the various other men we see in montages later in the show, all shorter. He's also taller than all the girls he's played opposite of, including Anne.
If I'm correct, up till now, Taylor is Nick's only on-screen partner that's taller than him. And that affects the physical intimacy, like where hands go and how the boys are positioned. Personally, I call it a "lead/follow" pair (like in partnered dances) or a "protector/protected" pair.
(Also please note that I know that this is kind of stereotyping, people don't always follow this fixed dynamic, and these labels only apply when they do follow a fixed dynamic. And I'm also just referring to the physical dynamic, not the actual relationship dynamic)
It's something new for him: for the entirety of his career, he was the bigger one in whatever relationship he was in: the big spoon, the one who lifts his partner, the one who's holding the other's waist; the "lead/protector". So what was it like for him to be the "follow"/"protected" for once?

Hello I have an idea for Tim.
What if he got those game screens pop up whenever he's doing some side missions or quests. And after that he'll get some cool and valuable stuff like: cool weapons with superpowers that are not from his world, advantages of gaining more information than the whole hero community, etc..
The Batfam probably thought that he was doing those missions because he was bored and wanted to relieve some stress, which is kinda true but whenever he does these quests he also makes a lot of allies from across the planets and helps him through it while also being part of the "Tim protector squad".
Also the screen will always congratulate him and give him some praise, plus the screen can also help Tim by upgrading his stuff or watching him from any danger and giving him a warning to be careful. Just a guy with his screen, what could go wrong? Hahah-
But. The screen can also give him some weird quest like "protect your loved one from [Redacted]" which confuses Tim but the screen doesn't have any power only providing him so who's the one controlling the screen???
Anyway these are just silly thoughts that I want to give :333
Heck yeah! I love exploring unusual/non-typical powers.
I really really want to develop this some more, so let's set up a power!
My favorite genre of games is horror. The fighting styles, gameplay, concepts, stick layouts, and all of that can be drastically different between games [at least Tim isn't stuck with game powers where he can't fight back]. Because of that, the end goal may be impossible to reach and thus changes to a new objective.
Here is an example of where this happened with Tim:
Convince Dick Grayson to become Robin Become Robin
Tim's thoughts and feelings can affect the missions he's given. He will never be given an objective he would not do (e.g. Kill Alfred). Not completing any task (side or main) can have consequences. Main ones have drastic outcomes that he can only somewhat control if he attempts them.
Upon completion, he gets points and rewards. His rewards are anything from new skills, connections, weapons, resources, etc.
His points can be used either in the "shop" or for his skill tree (Tim desperately wishes it was a "pay to play" game so he can get more points).
The shop has weapons, elixirs (one of which is Lazarus water), one use spells, maps, information/clues, outfits with effects, armor, etc.
His skill tree has three main branches: Body, Mind, and Soul.
For Body, he can enhance any of his characteristics to the upper limits of humans: eye sight, health, stamina, strength, sense of smell, etc. His points can also lower the difficulty or time needed to learn a very specific skill (ex. spending 5 points to decrease time needed to learn how to wield a pistol).
For Mind, he can hasten his thinking speed, create defenses against multiple mental attacks (including emotional manipulation and telepathy), decrease the mental energy required per tasks, decrease time spent learning languages/information, etc.
For Soul, this includes abilities to protect himself from magical/whatever interference, increase charm, increase ability to understand/read others' emotions, etc.
If he sounds OP, worry not! Tim suffers from never having enough points (he learned the hard way that he also needs to keep an amount saved up in case he suddenly needs to buy a tool or skill to save his or someone else's life.). There's so much he can buy, but there are only so many hours to complete side missions
Tim's least favorite quest was when he was chilling alone with his Zesti and suddenly got the notification:
Run
Jason's a jerk for scaring the shit out of Tim like that at TT

Hi again, i was just thinking anything about your modern mayhem lol, but i guess, what kind of devices would they own? If they would be owning multiple (they as in the four in the band, euro, dead, necro, hellhammer)
-🦇
Hii again anon!
Well personally I think Pelle for one chooses to use non-modern phones, or even a flip phone. Something simple where he can text people, receive calls and play music...but not enough to have things like apps or smartphone capabilities. He's always been a technology hater and wants to stick to the bare minimum when it comes to it. (I also imagine he still loses his phone constantly, and though he won't admit it he'll watch reels/videos on Øystein's phone with him when he's around.) getting a text back from his almost never guaranteed.
I think Øystein has something run down, an older iPhone model his parents got him that he's just using until it gives up. Nothing fancy but it's also not scuffed up too much outside a scratch or small crack. However, he seems like the kind of guy who uses those screen protectors and they get really jacked up and make it look like the screen is destroyed until you take the protector off. He absolutely drops his phone a lot and has a protective case because of it. He's bad a replying, he'll read your text and mean to answer but he forgets and by the time he remembers it's hours past when he said he would respond. He need to be constantly reminded with texts.
Jørn seems like the type to have more updated phones, mostly due to the fact that he breaks them all the time. One month he has one phone the next he has a new one because his old one got stuck down a storm drain because he was drunk one night. He seems like the type to also have two phones, one that has his gf and family on and the other for his buddies (the one that gets broken often) never responds and when he does you think there's either something wrong, or he needs something from you.
Jan probably has a new phone every few years or so. Also seems similar to Øystein in the fact he runs his phone's life until it dies or loses space. He seems like the type who has way too many porn vids and images saved to his camera roll. His phone screen is probably almost always in some extreme state of being cracked. He loses it frequently at his house because he sets it down and forgets about it. His contacts is filled with random peoples numbers he doesn't even know. He drunk texts people way too much

you should rank the modern boys on how cracked their screens would be (and if they have a screen protector or not)
this is definitely not bc i just accidentally dropped my phone onto the concrete face down and my freaking screen protector broke. definitely not
I SO SHOULD YOU’RE SO RIGHT.
1. Twi has somehow never broken a device in his life despite the number of times he’s fallen off a horse or his motorcycle (he’s cracked the screen protector a few times in particularly bad falls but never damaged the actual phone). War has made several jokes that his phone doesn’t break because Twi takes the damage FOR it. He has a screen protector and one of those otterbox cases that are meant to survive falling off a building or some shit. He’d definitely have a barely working several year old phone that he’s emotionally attached to. He CAN afford a new one, but this phone survived the last two years high school with him and he’ll use it until it LITERALLY doesn’t turn on anymore
2. Tied with Four but I’m putting him first: War’s phone is in pristine condition, theres not even a scratch on the case and he absolutely would have a screen protector and it’d be one of those privacy ones. His IPAD on the other hand is like 6 years old and hanging on by a thread and it fell out of his bag once and the screen is just DESTROYED in one corner (it has a small hole in it). He’d buy a new one but he has other things he has to buy that are more important to him and the ipad still does what he needs it to so. He got a new phone at the start of college when he moved out because he had to (and also wanted to) start paying for ALL of his own things when he moved out of his mom’s and ended up getting a new phone in the process because it was easier and also his old one was actively dying
2. Four has a broken screen protector on his because he keeps forgetting to buy a new one but he’s never broken the actual phone screen or any other device screen in his life with the exception of a tv when he was 5. He has a bright, colorful case with stickers slapped onto it that Hyrule, Wild, and Wind have given him
3. Hyrule was the absolute crazy person who didn’t have a phone case and then he was gifted one and THEN he dropped and cracked his high school phone. the new one he’s had since senior year of high school has a screen protector and a case on it and is in very good condition with only a few scratches on the case. He’s in 3rd because he HAS shattered a phone before in his life, but if i were ranking by only present condition of phones he’d be tied with War and FOUR would be 3rd
4. Wild has a scratch in the screen, several scratches, but no actual cracks. He doesn’t have a screen protector but he has a protective case because he’s a little worried about breaking it but he doesn’t wanna have to put a screen protector on it because he’s worried about fucking it up. The phone is only like 2-3 years old and he only bought a new one because the old one wasn’t updating anymore and it was too slow and couldn’t do what he needed it to. He’s only ranked below Hyrule because his current phone is not in perfect condition despite the fact that he’s never broken ANY phone and Hyrule has
5. Sky goes through screen protectors like no one else, he’s single handedly keeping the company in business. His phone will CONSTANTLY slip out of his hand and smack into the floor, or if he starts falling and he’s holding it he’ll have to sacrifice the phone so he can catch himself because he’d much rather have to buy a new phone than suffer another head injury or break his wrist again because he couldn’t catch himself well with something in his hands. Had to buy a new phone recently because the old one shattered when he dropped it while waiting for his new screen protector to come and he was really upset about that. He’s ranked this high because his phone never LOOKS cracked because he takes the broken screen protector off immediately, but he’s the one who drops his phone most frequently
6. Legend has a tiny crack in the corner of his incredibly old ass phone and then he slapped a screen protector on and since then he hasn’t had issues. he still drops it somewhat frequently but it has a durable ass case on it and hasn’t cracked again. Sky is in awe of him and Twilight and genuinely starting to think he’s cursed because they don’t go through nearly as many screen protectors as he does
7. Wind has a cracked screen, no protector, and a flimsy case but it has a dinosaur on it and the more protective one didn’t and you can understand his choice. He got his grandma’s old phone and it had a small dent in the side of it when he got the thing because she never had any kind of case on it and would drop it a lot. He’ll get a new one when he graduates high school
8. Time’s had the same iphone 6 since like a month after the damn thing was released and Twilight takes psychic damage every time he sees it because good fucking lord he thought HIS phone was old. its a MIRACLE the thing works considering the condition its in, all it really does is text and call and that’s really all Time uses it for. it has a gigantic crack in the middle of the screen and he will not stop using it and finally lay the thing to rest until it is COMPLETELY unusable

A Word on DID Theory
The hot topic in the Stranger Things theory world lately is DID/systems. So lets put aside all my other theories for a moment, and let's talk about a blatant instance of dissociative amnesia and memory gatekeeping that we've already seen on screen.
Keep in mind that I'm not saying any of this is what actually happened, just that if we view things through the lens of "what if it's DID", this is what it looks like. Cool? Cool.
NINA.
El is a genuine dissociative amnesiac, textually speaking—whether it be that those memories aren't "hers" or that her mind buried them, she still has only snatches of recollection re: the Rainbow Room.
If we want to pursue a hypothetical DID lens, NINA-HNL could be considered El's headspace.
Many individuals with dissociative identity disorder (DID) have an internal world in which they or their alters can manifest as themselves and interact. These internal worlds, which are also known as inner worlds or headspaces, can range in size and complexity. A system with only a couple of alters might have an internal room in which alters that are internally active, awake, and aware might manifest. Others might expand this living room to include doors to bedrooms for groups of or individual alters. Others might have small towns that may even be filled with static "NPCs"...that can interact with alters but themselves are more similar to imaginary constructs than to actual alters or fragments. Even more expansive internal worlds can result when highly imaginative or dissociative systems use their inner world to retreat from the outside world and so play out entire stories within their mind. Different systems may have more or less control over their internal worlds. Some may be able to actively shape and add new aspects to their internal world while others may regulate this ability to a specific alter or groups of alters or find the task impossible. Some systems do not naturally have an internal world but may be able to create one with the help of therapy. (x)
(See also: The First Shadow as compared to NINA, with its objectively "fake" Hawkins, complete with partial sets and characters who mimic Henry in oddly specific ways)
NINA could be seen as a therapeutic method for helping El access her headspace and integrate her system. A key player in this process is Henry.
For El, Henry wears many hats.
Protector: Protectors are alters that protect the body, system, host, core, or other specific alters or groups of alters. Physical protectors might take or try to prevent physical abuse or become aggressive in an attempt to defend against physical abuse. Verbal protectors might take verbal abuse or lash back verbally in order to counter verbal abuse. Emotional protectors might take emotional abuse or comfort other alters to soften the effects of emotional abuse. Sexual protectors might take sexual abuse or attempt to instigate sexual abuse in an attempt to feel more in control of the situation. Caretaker alters are a unique type of protector that is focused specifically on taking care of younger, weaker, or more vulnerable alters or external children. Memory Holder: Memory holders are alters that hold memories that are usually traumatic in nature so that other alters do not have to be confronted by the memories. In some cases, memory holders might hold memories of childhood innocence or of being loved by the system’s otherwise abusive or neglectful family. In these latter cases, the memory holder might serve to preserve these memories untainted by memories of trauma or to avoid confronting the system with the pain of what the abuse has cost them. Memory holders are highly associated with abuse takers, alters that experience trauma so that other alters do not have to. Internal Self Helper: An internal self helper is an alter that holds vast amounts of knowledge about the system, alters, trauma, and/or internal workings. For those who believe in cores, internal self helpers are often viewed as the first alter to be created or as the normally pseudo-separate internal voice of logic and reason that all people possess. Within the theory of structural dissociation, internal self helpers are often viewed as observing parts or hidden observers, both less than distinct states. Internal self helpers may or may not also serve as a gatekeeper.
Obviously, Henry's main function would be that of a caretaker. He appears as an orderly, a literal caretaker:
And he's a source of protection, comfort, and support for El (at least, until she gets a little too close to the traumatic memories being withheld from her, but we'll talk about that later).
Henry also serves as a gatekeeper, a memory holder, an internal self helper, and various other types of protectors.
When Two is verbally bullying El, Henry reprimands him in response to protect El (This being distinct from the behavior of a persecutor, who may instead harm Two for his behavior. See: Brenner). When El "misbehaves" and uses Henry's advice/fuels her powers with emotion, Henry is punished instead while El is kept separate:
Henry, theoretically, serves as a verbal, physical, and emotional protector for El. El misbehaves, but she is not the one punished. El is bullied, but she is not the one who defends herself. In fact, as we see directly after Henry's punishment, El can't defend herself. She needs Henry to protect her. (Which is especially "fun" when her present-day memories bleed in, with Two and his buddies replicating Angela's bullying. El likely wished she had a protector then. Alas, she did not.)
Henry also holds memories for El, ones that Brenner himself claimed were temporarily inaccessible:
Lo and behold, there's Henry, telling El she needs to remember how to use her powers:
He also holds neutral-good memories bringing forward memories, and he brings them forward when he thinks they could help her achieve her goals:
Henry seems to hold immense amounts of knowledge about El (as a real-life caretaker/observer might), and he often serves as a strategist/logical planner for the things El wants to do.
However, if we want to really get into the weeds re: DID, then we must also consider One.
One could be the result of a polyfragmented system.
Polyfragmentation is when someone with DID has many subsystems and layers within their system.
Henry knows about One, and seems to be aware to some degree that One isn't "real", despite him technically existing. One serves all the same functions as Henry, save for one trait. One is a persecutor.
(Brenner serves many of the same functions as One, just to a different degree in terms of power, but I'll touch on that after I talk about One.)
Persecutor: Persecutors are alters that purposefully harm the body, system, host, core, or other alters, sabotage the system’s goals or healing, or work to assist the system’s abuser(s). Persecutors might hold self hatred or provide an outlet for internalized abusive and negative messages. They might believe that hurting the system or other alters is the only way to control them or teach them how to behave and so prevent further and more extreme abuse from outside abusers. They might be reenacting abuse or trying to ensure that future abuse isn’t more harmful due to being preceded by a period of relatively little abuse. Some persecutor alters are introjects of abusers and may or may not understand that they are not actually the abuser themselves. Gatekeeper: A gatekeeper is an alter that controls switching or access to front, access to an internal world or certain areas within it, or access to certain alters or memories. The existence of a gatekeeper is highly stabilizing for a system because gatekeepers can to some extent prevent unwanted switching, failure to switch when necessary, or failure to switch to the correct alter. They can help to prevent traumatic memories from bleeding from the alters who hold them to alters who could not yet handle them. Gatekeepers might police the boundaries between subsystems. Because gatekeepers have control over which alters have access to front, they themselves are often or always near front and so witness everything that happens to the system. They might experience vast amounts of abuse and might present as ageless, emotionless, and nonhuman as a way to process this and cope. Gatekeepers may or may not also serve as an internal self helper.
Both of them could be split from one alter—a Jekyll and Hyde split, almost. Where Henry helps El remember things in a cautious, supported way, One withholds memories and diverts El entirely to sabotage the healing process re: NINA, purportedly for El's safety. We could even theorize that the split between Henry and One lies solely in One's persecutorial nature, given that the other "jobs" double up between them.
One appears after Henry takes punishment for El.
We a distinct shift in goals and behaviors. One offers El unrestricted access to new areas of the inner world, something that Henry never made mention of wanting to do:
One quite literally gives her the key to enter new areas and experience new memories she could not access on her own. He does so after learning that Papa is planning to eliminate her after realizing she's powerful and uncontrollable.
Instead of facing this side-by-side with El and teaching her how to defend herself like Henry may have, One directs El to run and hide from it while he bears the burden of eliminating the "threats".
By eliminating fragments perceived as intra-system "threats", One acts as a persecutor in the name of being a protector.
It's essentially intrapsychosocial mutiny, attempting to release El from the Brenner-Alter's control and clear the rest of the fragments in the lab out of El's main accessible headspace altogether (as well as any memories of how she achieved that freedom).
Fragment: A fragment is an alter that is not fully differentiated or developed. Fragments may exist to carry out a single function or job, to hold a single memory or emotion, or to represent a single idea. Depending on the way that individual systems use the term, a fragment might be any alter that could not survive if left on its own or that could not pass for a fully developed individual without the help of other alters. Fragments usually have not been exposed to enough complex, different, or interactive experiences to incorporate more into their sense of self and so become more developed and differentiated.
(For all intents and purposes, the other lab kids, as well as the nurses and guards, would be fragments.)
This would leave just El/the "core" and Henry/One's little subsystem (into which he absorbed the remaining fragments of the system, save for the Brenner alter, who is too powerful):
This all ^ ^ could serve as a reason why El perceives One as having committed the massacre, despite her flashbacks showing something entirely different: her committing the massacre. It could also explain why the monologue physically could not have happened (it happened solely in El's headspace as a conversation between alters), and the overlap between Brenner's memories and El's pre-monologue memories.
This would make Vecna/One, then, a persecutor alter kicked out of El's headspace and given physical form by supernatural means during NINA—which could explain why he's so unwilling to hurt El in any meaningful way, his extensive female subtext, his obsession with finding/reconnecting with El in general, and his ability to open gates when El is the sole character to display that ability previously.
See also, pre-NINA:
See also:
If you have DID, you may find yourself doing things you wouldn't normally do, such as speeding, reckless driving, or stealing money from your employer or friend. But you feel compelled to do these things.
Nonetheless, taking control back from One during their little battle royale is what allowed El to get control of herself/her powers back—to a degree.
El still cannot handle being a "monster" in any way, shape or form. We see as much just before she enters the end of NINA:
Even before she went in, the only way it was going to end was by packing all her trauma into One and yeeting him out into a new dimension.
She still hasn't faced the real truth, which the real Brenner promises to show her. One has still, hypothetically speaking, managed to install false memories in El's mind, protecting her from the truth even as she banishes him from her mind along with her "real" memories of 1979.
She's not ready to face it.
Furthermore, we do see Vecna being directly compared to El, while the gang in Hawkins fights over what name they're meant to call him:
Even so far as Dustin going about fighting Vecna the same exact way he'd fight El:
For all intents and purposes, Henry/Vecna/One might as well be an "evil" duplicate of El—in terms of a DID theory, he could be a subsystem that El packed all her trauma into/blamed all of her childhood incidents on and kicked out of her head entirely.
Lastly, Brenner as a hypothetical persecutor, gatekeeper, and helper.
Brenner would be the lead/most powerful gatekeeper, since he's "Papa". He's the top-dog of the inner world, and he holds all the keys. He would be considered an introject of an abuser, one who repeatedly does harm to keep order within the system, one who holds all of El's past, and one who gatekeeps literally every single door in our hypothetical NINA "system".
This doubling of tasks between One and Brenner could account for One's "Brenner-isms", as El perceives them as serving similar functions despite the power differences between the two.
NINA Brenner is threatened by One, due to One's desire to take control of the total system away from him and share it between himself and El/the core. Whether that plot was for the better or worse, we'll never know. Brenner retains control, status quo resumes within the hypothetical system.
—————
P.S.— We've also seen in bts leaks of ST5, that Henry seems to have some kind of idyllic "normal" world. It wouldn't be a stretch to call it an inner world/headspace, especially if he himself is hiding or being gatekept from the rest of the hypothetical Henry/Vecna/One "system".
TFS, given its heavy similarities to NINA, could also be viewed through a system lens with Brenner as protector, persecutor, and memory holder—the Mindflayer being, in a hypothetical sense, an invading pseudo-alter.
#my take on DID theory since its popularity has seen an uptick#i know people looooove that theory for Will#but if anyone's going to be associated with DID...it's El. It's El and it's Henry#El already has canonical dissociative amnesia. So does Henry (TFS).#el hopper#henry creel#DID theory#st nina project
