There Was an Underground Magazine for Transgender Women in the 1960s! Transvestia's Archives Provide a Window onto a Hidden World
— June 22, 2023 | Kirstin Butler & Casa Susanna | Article | American Experience

The cover of the August 1966 issue of Transvestia magazine.
In the first month of a new decade, a Los Angeles chemist named Virginia Prince mailed out the inaugural issue of a magazine. It was, as the title page of the January 1960 edition of Transvestia states, a privately printed journal “with three objectives: to provide EXPRESSION for those interested in the subjects of exotic and unusual dress and fashion; to provide INFORMATION to those who, through ignorance, condemn that which they do not understand,” and, finally, “to provide EDUCATION for those who see evil where none exists.” With these oblique statements, Prince launched what would become the first long-running periodical for male-to-female crossdressers and transgender women in the United States.
Over its 25-year print run, Transvestia grew from 25 initial subscribers to several hundred distributed across the U.S. Most readers received their bi-monthly issues through the mail, though after 1963 the magazine could also be found in alternative and adult bookstores and newsstands in major American cities. Prince was the magazine’s driving force and served as editor until 1979, but Transvestia’s contents were as much by its readers as for them. Subscribers submitted life histories, letters, editorials, book reviews and photographs of themselves. They had their own jargon: “TV” for transvestite, “GG” for “genetic girls,” “brother” for their male identities and the “girl-within,” to refer to their feminine selves; some readers also used “femmepersonator” or “FP” for short. Prince also reprinted medical papers on topics such as gender identity and the psychology of cross-dressing.
Each issue typically ran around 80 pages, with several dedicated to advertisements for various goods—self-published books, custom undergarments and wigs—and services such as electrolysis and makeup consultation. “Perhaps there are no good stores in your town. Perhaps you are too well known,” offered one advertisement for a personal shopper. “Perhaps you need an unusual size and would be embarrassed to ask for it. Whatever the reason, I can help.” Every issue also contained a “Person to Person” section where subscribers could connect with one another. “Lifelong TV, married, 34, scientist, welcomes all correspondence with all TV’s foreign or domestic,” reads a listing by Barbara, a reader from southern New England, in the December 1965 issue.

An optician’s ad in Transvestia’s October 1969 Issue.
Transvestia was an outlet for creative writing as well. A piece of fiction in the magazine’s first issue told the story of a married couple enjoying a night out, both husband and wife dressed in traditionally feminine attire: “The sound of my high heels matching hers, the sight of my frock swirling beside hers, made us feel as one…sensing the fragrance of the real woman so close to me, the distinction between ‘man’ and ‘woman’ vanished like smoke in a high wind.” Prince herself contributed a poem to that issue, composing on a theme that would recur in many other editions of the magazine—the relief experienced upon transforming from masculine to feminine archetypal expectations and presentation.

Poems in the January 1960 and March 1961 issues of Transvestia.
In fact, several subjects appeared with a great deal of regularity throughout Transvestia’s pages. Dr. R.S. Hill, a professor at Concordia University, authored a seminal study of the magazine as his dissertation. Reflecting on Transvestia’s most oft-recurring content, Dr. Hill wrote, “The letters and histories endlessly elaborated on the same themes and topics: theorizing the causes of their condition; crossdressing for the first time; overcoming obstacles to free expression; dealing with guilt, fear, or loneliness; disclosing to or hiding from parents, wives, and children; venturing out in public; passing successfully as women without public detection; describing articles of clothing, wardrobes, and bodily measurements; and sharing fashion and make-up advice.”
Through the magazine, Transvestia readers forged a group consciousness, united not just by mutual interests but also for their common demography: The majority of subscribers were white, middle-to-professional-class, and considered themselves heterosexual. Most were married and had children. Some spoke of cross-dressing as just a relaxing “hobby” they occasionally enjoyed. But a substantial number would come to identify as women over the course of the journal’s publication, including Prince herself as well as contributing editor Susanna Valenti. Prince wrote about that decision in her final issue as editor in 1979, saying, “I figured that since I had learned pretty much all I needed to know about being a man in this world, that I might just as well devote the rest of my life to exploring the other side of my own humanity…That was in June of 1968 and I have lived as Virginia ever since.”
All of the magazine’s readers agreed that the practice of cross-dressing allowed them to access their most vibrant selves. “I have been married, have fathered five children, and am about to become a Grandpa any day now,” said the magazine’s 1962 covergirl Eileen in an accompanying personal history. “The men I work with are all hairy chested so-and-so types, and have accepted me into their ranks without question. Yet, when I rush home from the office and enter my own world of delight, that is when I truly live.”

Transvestia subscriber Eileen graced the cover of the magazine's August 1962 Issue.
The Publisher
Having been through a great deal of pain, fear, guilt, loneliness and frustration in my life I wanted to help others to avoid or conquer these feelings. My tool for doing this has been Transvestia.” — Virginia Prince, Transvestia, Vol. 3 No. 16, August 1962
Born in 1912, Virginia Prince was the highly opinionated, often irascible godmother of Transvestia’s print pages and its extended real-life network. After launching the magazine, she also founded a national sorority for other crossdressers in 1962 called Phi Pi Epsilon—or FPE, which also stood for Full Personality Expression. This later became Tri-Ess, or the Society for the Second Self, an international crossdressing organization that still exists to this day. Prince frequently gave interviews to American and international media and liaised with medical professionals about the practice of cross-dressing.

The magazine’s “Person to Person” section was restricted to FPE sorority members to ensure correspondents’ safety.
Prince’s primary goal was to destigmatize cross-dressing; and she utilized the magazine as well as FPE to create a conservative bulwark against other, competing forms of transgender life and community in the United States in the 1960s. “Prince wanted to socialize individual ‘deviance,’” said Dr. Hill, “to place transvestism within a group context, domesticate it, and normalize it by promoting the radical idea that transvestites were not immoral, sexual deviants but rather normal, respectable citizens with only a harmless gender variation.” Even the name of Prince’s regular column in the magazine, “Virgin Views,” was part of her plan to de-eroticize a lifestyle that included cross-dressing by linking it to connotations of purity.
Already within a year of Transvestia’s genesis, Prince had assumed the role of self-appointed moral arbiter. “We must keep our own house clean and above reproach,” she asserted in the magazine’s March 1961 issue. In a repressive Cold War context where heteronormative standards reigned, that meant distancing cross-dressing from other gender and sexual subcultures: “We all know that the world confuses transvestism and homosexuality and when there is a campaign against the latter we are caught in the crossfire.” Prince asked readers to police themselves and each other, saying, “you come into the future of the magazine, not just by way of financial support and contributions of material, but by being a watchdog too.”

Prince’s column in the December 1965 issue included her portrait.
As part of her desire to domesticate transvestism, Prince also sought out and published writings by transvestites’ female partners. Some were tender—thus supporting Prince’s respectability campaign—as in an account from a wife about her husband’s transformation to “Betty Lynn, the Blonde Bombshell.” “I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want another dimension to their love,” wrote Fran. Still, the majority of Transvestia readers spoke of fraught negotiations around their cross-dressing, sometimes ending in the dissolution of marriage.
The narrative Prince espoused through Transvestia initially held that the goal of transvestism should be an exercised balance of masculine and feminine identities, with each having its own separate opportunity for expression. “[T]ry to employ perspective in seeing FemmePersonation as an adjunct to your masculine personality, not a substitute for it,” she suggested in her August 1962 “Virgin Views” column. “Transvestia does not exist for the purpose of impairing or destroying the masculine but rather to allow those who are aware of their feminine side to extract the full benefits from it. We can experience some of the feminine side of life, express part of our personality that way, and be better persons and citizens for it IF we…keep the whole matter in balance and under control.”
She advised against medical interventions such as hormone therapy and what was then known as sex reassignment surgery, saying, in 1965, “I realized that surgery would be a form of suicide not only for my masculine self but for Virginia too since it would cut the ground (as well as other things) out from under her…being a woman some of the time is wonderful, having to be one all the time would not be half as great as it seems to be from a distance.” As Dr. Hill writes, “‘transsexuality’ is everywhere in Transvestia as a category against which the ‘true transvestites’ defined themselves.”

Transvestia’s October 1962 cover featured photos of its first two years of cover models—“The composite cover of 12 livin’ dolls.” Prince’s is the largest photo in the center.
Over the coming years, however, Prince’s position would shift from this earlier dichotomous gender model to an identity where one’s masculine and feminine selves were merged into an integrated whole. “[V]ery little in life is tied up hard and fast with the fact that one is male or female,” she wrote in the August 1966 issue, adding “that the ideas of man and woman and masculine and feminine are cultural inventions for all their assumed usefulness.” Her views on gender had gradually become more flexible.
By June 1968, Prince had come to a decision to live full-time as a woman. Assembling the magazine, she said later, was what had allowed her to arrive at that turning point. “In trying to help you, my readers, I have learned and grown myself,” she wrote in the magazine’s 100th anniversary issue in 1979, which was largely dedicated to “The Life and Times of Virginia,” her personal history. “I am now a whole person, completely self accepting and at ease…[M]y best hopes and good wishes to all of you—may you, too, find the acceptance and the internal peace that we all need, and with that I say farewell.”
Susanna Says
“But Enough of Philosophising…Let's Gossip!” — “Susanna Says,” Transvestia, Vol. 7 No. 40, August 1966
Where Virginia Prince was Transvestia’s reigning West Coast intellectual, Susanna Valenti, the magazine’s contributing editor, was its East Coast bon vivant. Her regular column, “Susanna Says,” contained social news, fashion tips and advice, all served up with attitude and pointed humor. “I most certainly have particular people in mind whenever I unsheath a journalistic claw,” she wrote in February 1963, in response to what some readers deemed her “cattish remarks.” “Where would the fun be,” she protested, “if people could not see themselves mirrored in the printed page?”
For Valenti, criticism also had a noble purpose. She offered cosmetic and comportment tips—informing her readers about the right ways to walk, how to soften their voices and what pressed powders to wear—because those elements would allow them to more safely present to a world threatening arrest and violence. “Sorry, my friends, to sound so mean,” she demurred in that same column. “[S]omebody has to pour out a bucketful of cold, merciless realism, just to remind ourselves that the world is not entirely made of pretty clouds and blue skies. There’s also mud and hard pavement under our feet.” If being “read”—common community parlance for being discovered while dressed—was the greatest danger, and “passing”successfully as female would ensure their protection, then Valenti would scold Transvestia subscribers into shape.

Virginia included this image of herself and Susanna in Tranvestia’s 100th anniversary Issue.
“[P]resent as smooth an image as possible,” “Susanna Says” advised in 1965. “In some areas there's nothing we can do about—height, skeletal frame, feet, hands, muscles, etc—but in those areas where something can be done, there's just no excuse if we don't at least make an effort.” Valenti spoke at length about her own efforts: wardrobe alterations, dance classes and diets. For her, moral improvement could be achieved by means of aesthetic perfection—and why not enjoy oneself doing it? “The real fun about being a TV,” she proclaimed, “is in the CONSTANT IMPROVING.”

The April 1965 issue continued a feature that spanned several editions called “What Should I Wear?” and contained tutorials on wardrobe color, shape and style, including guides to neckline types and hem lengths.
Like Prince, Valenti had a significant community presence both on and off the page. In the very first issue of Transvestia, she announced that she and her wife Marie were opening a private retreat at their property in the Catskill Mountains catering specifically to Transvestia’s audience; the “Chevalier d’Eon Resort” was named after an 18th-century French crossdressing spy. “Change clothes as many times as you want, stay inside or go out—in short, do as you please and ‘LIVE.’ Even hairdressing help will be available,” promised the announcement. “What more can you ask? This sounds more like fiction than a lot of fiction, but it's real!” Indeed, over the next decade, Marie and Susanna would run what eventually became the eponymous “Casa Susanna,” which became the East Coast hub for crossdressers and a burgeoning transgender community.
Valenti, who had adopted Prince’s script against transitioning, also came to change her position with the changing times. She announced her own decision to live full-time as a woman in Tranvestia’s October 1969 issue. “I’ve ceased feeling that fabulous thrill of the change itself,” Valenti said of her part-time transitions back and forth from Susanna to her male identity. “It’s only fabulous in one direction: from HIM to HER. But the reverse from HER to HIM, is becoming more and more painful. It actually depresses me… To be ‘her’ is quite different. Energy seems to flow into me from all directions, and no matter what activity I engage in, I never seem to tire…I cannot speak of thrills, but of a peace and contentment that I find nowhere else.”

Susanna Valenti announced a momentous personal decision in her column for the October 1969 Issue.
Still, her final words in the magazine were more equivocal. A decade later, in 1979, Valenti reprised her column once more at Prince’s request for the centennial issue. “One hundred years! Or is it one hundred issues of TVia?” Valenti mused. “It really seems like a century ago we started groping in the confusion of our lives for a truth and a self-definition. We followed the same pattern that modern youth seems to have found, the eternal question of ‘who am I’?” Then she took stock of the gains Transvestia had won for her community, saying, “We seem to have moved forward to a certain extent. A good number of people, many more than there were one hundred issues ago, know about us. The moral ‘liberation’ of our times seems to have helped somewhat, too.
“But,” she concluded, “we ask ourselves, have we really become liberated? Have we really become understood? Accepted?”

What are the best thesis writing services?
Let’s be honest—writing a thesis can feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world. Between research, writing, citations, formatting, and deadlines, it’s easy to feel lost or overwhelmed. That’s exactly why thesis writing services exist—to take some of that pressure off your shoulders and help you submit something that you’re actually proud of.
But not all services are created equal.
Some promise the moon and deliver recycled content. Others overcharge and ghost you when you ask for revisions. So how do you find a thesis writing service that’s actually worth your time and money?
Let’s break it down.
🥇 The Ones That Actually Deliver
You want real academic support—not just a writer who rephrases Wikipedia. That’s why services built by subject experts and academic professionals stand out. They know what your university expects and they’ve helped hundreds of students just like you.
Let’s talk about three of them.
1. All Homework Assignments
Imagine having someone who helps you pick the right topic, guides you through your literature review, runs your data analysis, and even formats your document the way your university wants it. That’s what All Homework Assignments is all about.
It’s best for students in management, nursing, education, psychology, and general academic fields. And yes, they’re super responsive—WhatsApp support is available 24/7, so you’re never left hanging.

2. Programming Online Help
Now, if your thesis involves coding, simulations, or anything technical, this is your go-to team.
Whether you’re working on a machine learning model in Python, building a Java-based project, or writing a CS dissertation, they’ve got the technical and academic skills to bring your vision to life. They don’t just help you write the thesis—they help you build it too.
3. Statistic Homework Tutors
Doing a thesis that’s heavy on numbers? Maybe you're analyzing survey results, running regressions, or testing hypotheses. That’s where Statistic Homework Tutors shine.
From SPSS to STATA to R, they handle the stats side so you don’t have to sweat over it. Great for students in economics, public health, finance, psychology, and other research-focused areas.
🚀 Why These Services Stand Out
Here’s what sets them apart from the random “write my thesis in 24 hours” sites you see floating around:
You work with real academic experts
Your work is 100% plagiarism-free
You get help tailored to your specific subject and topic
You can ask for revisions (without being ghosted)
And most importantly—you’re not treated like just another order
They’re not the cheapest in the world, but they’re student-budget friendly, and what you get in return is actual peace of mind.
⚠️ Quick Tip Before You Choose Any Service
Ask these three questions:
Will I be able to communicate directly with the writer?
Can I see samples or get updates along the way?
What’s the policy on revisions or refunds?
If the answer is “yes” to all three, you’re probably in good hands.
🎯 Final Thought: Your Thesis Deserves the Best
You’ve worked hard to get this far in your academic journey. Don’t let a rushed or subpar thesis hold you back. Whether you're short on time, stuck on stats, or just need help getting organized, these services are here to back you up—not just complete an order.
So breathe easy. Support is out there—and it’s better than you think.

Ethical Principles in Research While experimenting and during the research of several diverse subjects ranging from animal testing to human experimentation, from social and scientific transgression to scientific research, there are ethical principles that need to be adhered to and applied by the researchers. Study participants, who open up their lives to the researchers, commentators and also those followers during the period of one's research, rely and trust us so we can do our task efficiently without causing any harm. The United States largest psychological organization is the American Psychological Association (APA) with a goal to convey the psychological knowledge among the masses. The application, usage, intent and the practical considerations are discussed in the overview of the ethics code. The Preamble and the Principles are a source of mentoring for the psychologists although they are not mandatory, the psychologists are advised to consider upon them as an action of ethics. The Standards of ethics set obligatory rules of conduct for the psychologists to follow. Most of them are in written form for the psychologists depending upon their jobs and the circumstances. The ethical ideals are not comprehensive but if a demeanor is not stated by an ethical standard, it does not mean that it is one among the two i.e. either ethical or unethical. The Ethics Code of the Applied Psychological Association (APA) applies only to the psychologists of APA and on their activities which include their scientific research and their expert life as psychologists. The activities of the psychologists are not limited to its practice of psychology or to the psychological therapy, their research in the association, or the management of the subordinates, service towards the public, expansion of their instruments, educational recommendation, legal medical activities and management and assessment of designs of the organization. Ethics Code is applied to all these activities and is strictly followed by the members of the APA. Along with these comes the detailed information of oneself including name, address, internet access and other communications via electronics. I personally think that the code of ethics should only follow the ethics related to their association and not the member's private information. Plagiarism: The workers of Applied Psychological Association (APA) have some rules of ethics regarding their written work as well, which has to be followed at all times. Firstly no psychologist can present even a portion of work which is cited frequently by other psychologist members of the organization (Ethical Principles, 2010). (a) Psychologists can only be given credit for their own original ideas and/or work or the work or a task done entirely on their own. The task which they are taking the authorship credit should have actually been executed by them. I would make sure that the work I am taking the credit for is entirely mine, taken from my sources as, following the ethics is necessary for every psychologist and plagiarism is considered to be a crime. (b) The professional work and any sort of scientific contribution of whichever individual is involved no matter what their present status is vaguely shown in the publication and .the primary authorship. Possession of any official position even if it is a chair of my department does not give me the license of taking the credit of authorship. Even if I have a minor participation in the writing, I will recognize it by properly mentioning my name in the footnotes or in the preface. The rules of ethics state clearly that I cannot take credit of what I have not performed and therefore I would make sure that the name of whosever reference I am using in my work is cited properly. (c) A student can be registered as a chief author in an article written by multiple authors, but under unique circumstances, which includes that the article should be specifically a doctoral dissertation of the student. The publication acknowledgment are discussed before-hand and as early as possible by the faculty advisors and the as long as the research it continues wherever it is applicable (Ethical Principles, 2010). I would, as a student, make sure that I, as well as my peers are well-aware of the acknowledgment page and state it correctly. All of us should be aware of the rules and the ethics stated regarding it. Risk assessment: (a) The judgments based on the reports of recommendations, the analytical and evaluative declarations of the psychologists which include the verification of any crime are based solely on the information and evidence I use to authenticate my data (Ethical Principles, 2010). (b) I will be making my decisions of the psychosomatic traits of personalities after their proper examination. It is to be noted in 9.01c that it is important that the individual should be capable of reasoning and making their statements and assumptions properly. When in cases like this the individual is incapable and the efforts of psychologists are not coming to any use; they document their struggle on the case. In such a case I will elucidate my assumptions on the case but briefly write my commendations and suppositions regarding it (Ethical Principles, 2010). I would be definite that I examine my patient accurately according to the code of ethics. If my patient is unable to make his decisions I would make sure that the documentation in my file is clear and lucid. Informed consent: (a) A consent form from the patient is obligatory to take while administering research on the patients, during their psychotherapy sessions or referring to the psychiatrist through any means of communication. The permission to continue the counselling is taken by asking the patient in any verbal way by the psychiatrist, which the patient understands is mandatory as stated by the governmental law or as written in the Ethics (Ethical Principles, 2010). The government law states quite clearly the law of taking the consent form from a patient and I would be confident to take verbal consent from my patient. (b) There are options for persons who are unable to give approval for their treatment and have no next of kin. (1) Psychologists provide a clarification, (2) ask the patients will regarding the treatment, (3) do what is best for their patient by considering his preferences, (4) if the permission has to be granted by the court of law one should seek permission from a person who is sanctioned lawfully. When the permission for the treatment is not required from the court or any legally sanctioned person then the psychologist takes the matter into his own hands by protecting his own patient by keeping in mind his rights and well-being. If my patient is unable to give his own permit form of starting his treatment I would go to his next of kin and do all that the code of ethics states as it is mandatory for the psychologist to follow the code of ethics strictly. Privacy and confidentiality: While dealing with your patient it is essential to maintain your patient's seclusion and once a psychologist has the patients private information it is his chief commitment to go to any extent to protect it. The confidentiality is stated by the law and it sets its limits as well (Ethical Principles, 2010). Keeping your patient records private is highly recommended in the code of ethics and I would ensure of following it as revealing the patient's information is a crime. The patient should be aware of his private information being opened to his psychiatrist. (a) Psychologists in order to get legal information about their patients go to the people who are not allowed to give legal information. They use organizations with which they have developed a professional association to get appropriate information regarding them. (Ethical Principles, 2010). ). Therefore, as a psychologist I will mention it to my patient that how much information I will be needing for their case and how deep I will go into his/her past. (b) The conversation of confidentiality should be done in the beginning of the connection or afterwards as new conditions permit. . I would make my patient aware beforehand that his information is safe with me and I won't reveal it until the conditions allow me to. Recording Psychologists ought to take permission from their clients and patients or from their legal councils, before taking their images or recording their conversations (Ethical Principles, 2010). Before starting a session with my patient I would confirm that my patient allows me to take his pictures and his recordings. Code of ethics states very clearly that a patient should be aware and a psychologists should take his permission. Diminishing interruptions on privacy: (a) Psychologists mention on the reports of their patients that only relevant information was taken to interconnect with them. (b) Information and private evidence is taken only for the sake of professional work and only from individuals relating to the work (ethical principles, 2010). I would ensure that my patient is well aware that his information is only being taken for professional reasons. Disclosures: (a) With the proper agreement with the patient or the client or suitable legal individual psychologists can disclose certain information when necessary but not when the ethics law proscribes it. (b) Psychologists can reveal the personal information only when the law itself permits it for a legal reason. The legal reasons can be (1) when the patient is in need of services, (2) when proficient consult is required from other experts of the same field, (3) when the patent or the client needs protection from certain danger, (4) when payment is required from the patient and for that purpose limited information can be taken from the patients for the fulfilment of the task (Ethical Principles, 2010). I would be certain to inform my patient regarding the disclosure aspect which states that when the law permits the psychologist can reveal certain information regarding the patient. The patient should be conscious of this code of ethics when necessary to avoid any misunderstanding. Consultations The rules of ethics regarding the consult of psychologist with its patients are (1) during a consult a psychologist cannot unfold his patient's identity or reveal information which could lead to the person's identity especially to the organization with which the patient or the client has a secluded relationship but if consent has been granted by the person itself then the information can be disclosed. (2) Information can be exhibited only in the cases where consultation is required (Ethical Principles, 2010). I would keep every patient of mine on a different level. I would not disturb their privacy and also follow the rules of ethics which are strict and clear in keeping one patient's information hidden from the other. Confined information for moral and other purposes: (a) Psychologists in their writings, conferences, social media talks and sessions with their partners cannot reveal any part of information regarding their patients which could lead to their identification. In some cases they can unfold or use information of the patient if necessary (1)they can use their name and incidents in an entirely different manner, (2) the person itself has granted the permission to use their information; (3) it has been legally endorsed by the law (Ethical Principles, 2010). In any seminar I would make sure that I do not use my patients' privacy to for the sake of fame. Data handling and reporting It is very important to understand the way that the data should be handled if one wants to conduct the research in a responsible manner; therefore, I will carefully go through the ways that the data should be treated. The images present in all of the manuscripts which got accepted were tested by the editors of the Journal of Cell Biology in 2002. This was done in order to observe if some alterations were done to them in such a way that the guidelines of journals were violated. Inappropriate manipulation was noted to have taken place in approximately a quarter of those papers. Original data on the papers was asked for by the editors, they then compared that data with the images that were submitted and asked for the figures to be changed in accordance with the guidelines. 'Fraudulent manipulation' was observed to be present in about 1% of the papers and due to this manipulation the conclusions of the paper got affected and this resulted in the rejection of the paper (Committee on Science, 2009). I won't be manipulating the data even if it seems to be very insignificant as, by doing this I will be violating not only the basic but the largely accepted professional standards of science. I will be drawing my conclusions on the basis of the natural observations that I make. If I alter the data and try to make a case look stronger than it really is then I will not be fulfilling the 3 obligations that have been described in the beginning of this guide. By altering the data I will not only be misleading my colleagues but will most probably hinder their progress in their research or field as well, their own trustworthiness and authority as researchers could be undermined and if they make use of my altered information they can cause harm to the society on a broader level exactly like when the risks associated with some medical treatment are understated (Committee on Science, 2009). Today when internet has given us such wide range of access to information and has made the spread of information so much easier it has become even more important to be very careful about the type of information that we share as, wrong or altered data can cause widespread and unpredictable damages (Committee on Science, 2009). My careless measurements or the poor experimental design can result in the misleading of data along with inappropriate manipulation. Over the years methods and tools have been developed and improved by the researchers in order to increase the integrity of research. There are some particular fields in which a few of these methods are used like statistical tests of significance, proper question phrasing on surveys and double-blind trails. While, there are others which are applicable to all fields of research like explaining to others what has been done in the research and how the verification of the results can be carried out (Committee on Science, 2009). As these methods are very important, I will be describing these procedures in the scientific paper so that it could be understood by the reviewers that how the data was produced as, this will make it easier for them to evaluate the paper not only on the basis of its validity but also on the basis of the reliability of methods which were used in it. In the absence of this information there are a lot of chances that other researchers might not accept my data or the conclusions which I have drawn from it. It might also not be possible for them to reproduce the condition in an accurate manner in which the results were derived by making use of the data (Committee on Science, 2009). Even if I make use of the best methods, they won't really mean much when the data won't be recorded by me in a correct and proper manner. There are various requirements for the collection of data in various research groups and disciplines however; it is the fundamental responsibility of the researchers to have an accessible, accurate and permanent record of what they have done in order to conduct the research and therefore, I will keep a record of all of my work as well so that other researchers could follow my processes if they want to conduct the same or similar research. Although it mainly depends on the field but they may also be required to enter the data into bound notebooks that would have sequentially numbered pages made by using permanent ink and using an application of the computer which would have secure data entry fields that would identify where and when the work was done and this would also be able to retain the data for the specified amount of times. It is a requirement in most of the industrial research and some of the academic research for the data note-book to be signed and dated by a witness daily (Committee on Science, 2009). It is very unfortunate that there is no formal training that is given to the beginning researchers in recording, storing, analysing and sharing the data. I personally believe that meetings should be scheduled in a regular manner in order for the policies and data issues to be discussed by the institutions and research groups as this will help in setting the responsibilities and expectations in a proper manner (Committee on Science, 2009). Most of the times the researchers have access to the published scientific papers and books so that they could look at the research material and data that was used to verify and support the conclusions as, with the help of this data they can conduct their own researches as well however, there exists some policies in a few of the research institutions and funding agencies on the sharing of published materials. In the light of the expectation the data regarding the processes of the research should be available and the researchers who refuse to provide this data are not acting according to the standards of science and therefore, in my opinion data regarding the research processes and methods should be made available for others to read and make use of (Committee on Science, 2009). With the evolvement of the scientific discipline and new technologies, new issues keep on arising regarding the sharing and treatment of data. Some kinds of data is analysed in a very extensive manner before it is recorded. Also, sharing this data might also mean that the software and at times the hardware which was used to analyse the data might have to be shared as well. Due to the quickly changing digital technologies it has become very important to make some provisions regarding the transportation of data from one platform to another if we don't want this data to be lost forever. The traditional practices associated with the evaluations and publications of scholarly work are being challenged by the new types of publications. Therefore, I believe that it has become very important for us to stay up-to-date with the chaining technologies especially in the field of research (Committee on Science, 2009). Mistakes and negligence All of the scientific research is vulnerable to error. Usually, at the frontiers of knowledge the experimental techniques are pushed to their limits and it becomes difficult to separate the noise from the signal and it is also possible that the question might not be defined in a proper manner either. Therefore, in uncertain scenarios like these I feel that identifying the trustworthy data from a pool of confusing and at times inconsistent observation can prove to be very difficult (Committee on Science, 2009). I believe that I will at times need to take the risks of exploring innovative ideas. I might even have to depend on experimental or theoretical techniques which aren't developed completely. But even risk taking of this kind won't be any excuse for me to conduct sloppy research however; it shouldn't be called misguided as well (Committee on Science, 2009). Lastly, it has to be kept in mind that all the researchers are humans. We don't have unlimited resources at our disposal and neither do we have unlimited time. Honest mistakes can be made by anyone, even the most responsible of the researchers (Committee on Science, 2009). Even with all these difficulties I believe that as a researcher it is my responsibility to my profession as well as to the public and to me to be as careful and accurate in conducting research as possible.
