ICYMI: The Chilean Star Wars Visions short, "In the Stars" was inspired by the genocide of the Selk'nam, an indigenous group in Patagonia.
You can read a little bit about that here:
But yesterday, after a long campaign, the Selk'nam finally gained official recognition from the Chilean government:
Here's a little bit in English about what it means for them to be officially recognized, and what it took to get there (written beforehand):
This official recognition also includes the Chilean government admitting its fault in the genocide publicly, which is a really big deal.
Also, a movie about the Selk'nam genocide, "The Settlers" (Los Colonos), which won an award at Cannes, was also just selected by the Chilean Film Academy as Chile's entry for the Oscars this year (and will be coming out for wider audiences soon!):
"In the Stars", sadly, was disqualified from the Emmys this year on a TECHNICALITY - there will be NO short form animated entries this year because of a mess behind the scenes.
All that being said, it's wonderful news for the Selk'nam this week, and it's really cool when Star Wars reflects a real world struggle against fascism.

Animation Night 166: Star Wars Visions... 2
Remember Star Wars: Visions? We covered it back on Animation Night 73, now almost two years ago. If you don't, no worries: basically the Animatrix by way of Star Wars. The Mouse threw a bunch of money at some top-class anime studios to make films for their IP, giving the studios pretty free rein to play that however they pleased.
The results were pretty strong! Trigger did 'Promare with Sith' under Imaishi and a strong realist jedi-as-samurai piece, Geno Studio did an impressive digital facsimile of the 90s cel style, Kinema Citrus told a cool atmospheric scifi mystery with Emi Evans on the soundtrack, and Science Saru did a fun tribute to Astro Boy and a slickly stylised samurai one that, now I've seen Inu-oh, definitely has a little of its DNA. A lot of them boiled down to 'a Jedi fights a Sith', but delivered with a ton of panache.
Absolutely it was the best thing to come out of the zombie Star Wars memeplex in a long time, although I'd far rather these kinds of short film compilation projects could happen without having to be tied to the Brand. But, if wishes were horses, or y'know whatever these are...

Two years later, we're back with another round! This time, instead of going to anime studios, the Mouse has turned to various medium-sized animation studios from around the world - many beloved for their unique styles. Expect to see names like Cartoon Saloon (AN14), Aardman (AN50), Mir (The Legend of Korra) and La Cachette (Primal, c.f fufuro). There is strictly speaking one anime studio in there, namely D'Art Shtajio; there's also the South African studio Triggerfish, who I'll talk about in more detail when the time comes to do Kizazi Moto. Plus a couple of studios that I'm less familiar with, such as El Guiri in Spain and PunkRobot in Chile.
All in all a very impressive lineup, sure to bring some unique takes on the material.
Is it great that all these studios, known for their brilliant original work, are all here working for the Mouse, making yet more Star Wars? Hahaha. Well. No, but I'm still curious to see what they've come up with.
Work is crazy at the moment so I don't have time to do a big writeup. If you want to read summaries of the films, Wikipedia's got you covered. I'm of a mind to take them as they come, though!
Animation Night 166 will be starting at 10pm UK time, about 30 minutes from now, at twitch.tv/canmom!

The second season of Star Wars: Visions was one of the many treats delivered to Star Wars fans in 2023, and over at StarWars.com PunkRobot Studio co-founder Gabriel Osorio discusses In The Stars, his studios episode from that second season. In the story, the sisters’ people believe that their ancestors become stars after they pass away. For Tichina, everyone still being there with them is a source of strength and all the more reason to fight back. “We’re not alone!” she says. But Koten is less optimistic. She notes they can no longer see the stars underneath all the pollution from the factory. The imagery of characters being connected with their culture through the stars was one of the initial seeds that carried on from early development. “Even when we didn’t know what the story was about, I really wanted to see these characters looking at their lost mother or father in the stars,” Osorio says. “That idea was what made us connect the dots of the story.” Throughout the film, we see Tichina’s bullheaded nature contrasted with Koten’s world-weary and outwardly cold demeanor. Tichina wants to fight, constantly trying (and failing) to use the Force like their mother did to fight the Empire. Koten, on the other hand, fears losing Tichina, too, and wants them to do what they can to survive. “In some ways, Koten is the main character because she is the one that has this arc in the film,” Osorio says. “But in many ways, making this short film was about thinking about how you feel as a child. Tichina knows what she wants and tries really hard to do it. [The film] has a lot to do with going back to the naivety we have as a kid.” [amazon box="0736444289"]

Star Wars Visions Season 2 Confirmed
Once again Anime is coming to enrich the Star Wars universe again. This time we have a much redder aesthetic, which makes me wonder if the stories will be more Dark Side-oriented (though we had a mix of it last season with The Duel, The Twins and Akakiri being more dark side-focused) the episode names seem to suggest it too.
The most interesting company to have their hand at it are the claymation gods Aardman, responsible for Wallace & Gromit, Morph and Chicken Run. But do not underestimate Cartoon Saloon's potential, the studio that gave us Wolf Walkers have the caliber especially in the sci-fi wonder of Star Wars. Same can be said for Studio Mir (Legend of Korra & Voltron) and Studio La Cachette (Primal, LD&R's Sucker of Souls).
Wonder what we'll get from the next 9, though I'm not expecting continuation from the last nine.
#star wars#star wars visions#anime#aardman animations#cartoon saloon#punkrobot#studio mir#triggerfish#d'art stajio#studio la cachette#eighty eight pictures#el guiri studios#still sad we never got to follow up with village bride lop & ocho or the ninth jedi#Ronin got an extra one shot but still all that potential is there#after Andor and Mandalorian have done so well on the non-force side it'd be cool to help rebuff the force side of the series
