How To Get Beyond Your Comfort Zone 

I was recently asked this question. 

‘How do you go far and beyond your comfort zone?“

My answer.

“One step at a time.’

Here’s the thing, you don’t notice how far you have travelled until you look back and see where you were. 

Each time you push the edge of the envelope it doesn’t take long before you find yourself in a place that feels comfortable again. The edge expands and you slide into it each time. Also, when you push outside of your comfort zone consistently, you can find yourself familiar with spending more time there. The unknown, the fear of making mistakes, whatever it was that held you back, stops feeling as uncomfortable as it once did. You start to appreciate that the reason that space felt uncomfortable was because you were just used to staying comfortable – and what you thought was discomfort was generally more your anticipation of the discomfort of the effort you needed to put in – not the outcome that was on the other side. Which is generally something akin to growth. 

There is no reason why you should leave your comfort zone either. If you are happy where you are then why change. But for those who sense there is something more for them, so fuller experience of life, then this might be of use.

If you want something that you perceive is outside your comfort zone, do it. 

Allow yourself to make mistakes and take it one step at a time!

The path to enlightenment requires a throwing off of the comfortable and familiar and being willing to try and even seek out new ways of doing things. If what was comfortable and familiar to you was going to bring you to enlightenment, don’t you think you would already be there? The things that will bring you to enlightenment can certainly bring you comfort, once you are familiar with them; but in the beginning, their very unfamiliarity will feel odd to you.

So don’t look for comfort, not at first. Look for Truth. Look for those things that resonate with the Divine. Look for those things that you can recognize as strong and valid and spiritual, not with your head but with your heart.

Today, take stock. Where do you shy away from the unfamiliar, even if it might be beneficial, and hide in those things that comfort you? Where do you avoid growth? How might you do things differently?

Signature Style. Slightly different representations, similar execution. Side by side with a years-old healed piece to show healing. Once in a while I get a doubt or objection regarding fine linework and detail based on the old "bold will hold" tattoo adage. While still accurate in many cases, it comes from a different era, different practices, different technology, different medical, care, healing, and aftercare procedures that have now been mitigated by years of practice and improvements. This is why you see such amazing tattooes today that deny convention. A word of caution:: While there are many artists out there in the social media-verse that take advantage of this to make irresponsible choices, taking advantage of the public's ignorance and inflated expectations; and worse still, others that feed into it by using filtered and color-managed tattoo photos and photo-shopped compositions and mock-ups to sell people tattoos wthat will NEVER look like they are reperesented, much less last that way... there are those of us who quietly, cautiously, and respectfully push the boundaries of what is possible. In the name if these I say that Our art is no longer limited by the constraints of a limited medium, and limited/shortsighted perspectives, but only by good sense and quality design. It is a new day.
