i dont think people realize how much touch means something to me, how important touch is to my soul.
If you are touching me in any kind of way, its because you have permission to do it. i grew up scared of everyone touching me (for what my dad peversely said about me and what would happen to me.) and just recently i started to allow it.
This good friend of mine... she hugged me so tightly around the waist today, i was dumbfounded before melting into her grasp.
she made commentary on how i kind of go limp in peoples grasp, and it comes from both
i am cat
i am relaxing
i dont know how hugs work (sob)
but i REALLY like hugs
and uh... i really like when my good friend touches me, holds my hand, hugs me. The feeling is going to keep lingering for awhile...
As cat i find physical touch to be the most vulnerable and comforting thing in the world to me.
who knew the kid who leaned over two years ago to tell me that she liked my art would be literally the closest person in my life? that now i cant stop thinking about her and look for her and talk about her all the time...

Large swells, percussion in a nonreal space.
I had my good friend over again last week to spend some time patching. We've done this a handful of times since I moved, often to good ends, but I haven't had the recorder ready.
By nature of this being collaborative, I can't recall every aspect of this patch. I know the Spectraphon through Rainmaker provided a lot of the core sound, the kick is Qpas into Erbe Verb, the hats are Piston Honda and Crucible. Percussion and some events were programmed via Constellation, and notes were generated and played using Planar and Bard Quartet.
There was actually another feature of this patch, the ability to do some beautiful glissandos, which funnily enough did not make it into this recording; so I'll revisit that control scheme at some point.

Hello, my friend
Now that the most recent gig is in the can, time for a bit more exporation into some new additions- so, a bit of a modular synth geek post follows
This patch is digging deeper into the Noise Engineering Gamut Repitor- a really fab module that feels a bit like it was built for me
In this patch, that's handling all of the melodic lines, it's in Rhythm Mode, so it's doing some interesting things with the triggers
Voices here are a BIA, Spectraphon with a QPAS from Make Noise, and Braids- drums are from a BitBox Micro from 1010 Music sequenced by an Acid Rain Constellation while bass is from an Arturia MiniBrute 2S, all mixed live in Bitwig
Tons of depth with all of these, look forward to digging in further

Sam Petts-Davies's Setup for Thom's 'Everything' Tour
Tumblr media
A photo of the setup, shared by Sam on his instagram account with the caption "tour begins tonight. i’ll be parked at front of house with this box of esoterics for the duration. it’s going to be something really special."
Thom's solo tour has just begun with a show in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Sam Petts-Davies is along for the ride!
Since Radiohead's earliest shows, there's always been at least a few effects added by an engineer at the FOH (front of house) mixing desk to keep the band's sound clear and coherent. With Radiohead, that role was filed by Jim Warren. Even after Thom started bringing pedalboard full of vocal effects on tour, Jim continued to apply additional effects including plugins such as the Waves C4 multiband compressor for vocals. You can find more info on Jim's work in these posts.
For The Smile, even fewer hardware effects were needed at the FOH desk, in part due to Thom's expanded vocal pedalboard. In 2022, the Smile's mix engineer mainly relied on plugins from an Avid VENUE S6L-32D digital desk, supplemented only by a TUBE-TECH CL 1B Tube Optical compressor (presumably for Thom's vocals).
It's clear that when Thom is performing totally solo, a different approach is needed. But it's hard to imagine that any past FOH setup has been so full of hardware effects! And not just effects, but also modulators and an usual mixer, as we'll see....
For those who don't know, Sam initially served as a engineer under Nigel during the recording of Junun in 2015. He subsequently did engineering work on Spectre, A Moon Shaped Pool, and on the strings for the OKNOTOK singles. In 2018, he co-produced the soundtrack to Suspiria with Thom, and apparently Thom was a fan because Sam received a full production credit for Thom's soundtrack to Confidenza. He also produced both of the Smile albums released this year: Wall of Eyes and Cutouts.
For comprehensibility, we've divided the setup into four sections: the core, the modular, the pedals, and the rack. We'll start with the core setup.
Core Setup
Tumblr media
This section is the nexus: receiving input from Thom's stage setup, sending it through various effects, and mixing it all together. The Matrix Mixer is using to both mix together and feedback the various effects in Thom's eurorack setup. The Yamaha DM3-D appears to be the central mixing console for the entire setup. Despite its small size, the Yamaha boasts 22 channels and a huge range of built-in effects, and on top of that it can also run VST plugins.

? Electro-Harmonix 45000 looper
Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape delay

Erica Synths Matrix Mixer
Yamaha DM3-D Digital Mixing Console
Modular Setup
Tumblr media
In the decade since Thom first used a Make Noise Shared System Plus to process his voice and piano, his eurorack effects setup has expanded quite a bit! The Shared System is designed to be both a sound generator and an effects processor, and since then Thom has created dedicated setups for each of those applications. This setup is the effects processor, with lots of delays, filters, and reverbs, plus some LFOs and CV sources to modulate those effects. The additional Doepfer case that Thom has on stage, might have some of his sound generators, but knowing Thom it could just as easily be even more Make Noise Echophon delays.

Make Noise Morphagene sampler
Mannequins Three Sisters filter
Mannequins Just Friends
Qu-Bit Aurora reverb

It appears that these are Thom's Rows 1 and 2 are kept in a Doepfer A-100P6 Suitcase 6U case. Rows 3 and 4 are kept in a Doepfer A-100PB Suitcase Base case. The modules on row 4 are impossible to identify at this angle, but Make Noise style knobs are clearly visible on the left-most module.

Ahhh, what the heck, your comics are so cute??? 🤣
I'm kinda curious tho (as a fellow ace)—and only if you don't mind my asking?—how you and your partner met/figured out your QPA. Because I've tried the whole... get to know people in person thing, the online dating thing, and it just... doesn't make sense. 😵‍💫 How does one find a platonic life partner in what often feels like an ocean of straight amatonormativity..? 😅
Thank you so much for the kind words!^^
I feel like my partner would be wayyyy better suited to answer that one since they're the one who suggested to be in a QPR in the first place! But to be perfectly transparent and factual I guess I'll explain the step-by-step:
I wasn't looking for anything specific, to begin with, I was very content to vibe on my own with friends and family as support. (The aro-aceness in me helped in that sense, I believe)
My partner and I started off as online friends that just got along very well and talked a lot about common interests, as close friendships work typically, at least for me
We're both ace so we talked a lot about that, and about what works for us and what doesn't
About a year and a half after starting to talk online, they suggested trying out being in a QPR. My clueless ass had no idea what that was, how that worked, and was pretty much a mess about it, but also down to try, so there we went.
It worked for us. It felt like a nice and comfy type of relationship to be in.
About six months after that we met up IRL for the first time. Vibes were very much verified IRL too.
We started out with a pretty high level of boundaries but have built up more intimacy (both in terms of physical and what we're willing to talk about vulnerably) over time. It's always been done in the form of a suggestion, in a "would you vibe with that, because I would, but if you wouldn't let's not" sort of way. It's been developing pretty naturally and smoothly.
We're still long-distance to this day because we live in different countries. We're considering marriage, mainly as a means to an end, in order to be able to stay in the same place without one of the two risking being kicked out after a while. But ironically, before that necessity even dawned on us, on our first meeting, I was the one who'd blurted out "I've never wanted to marry anyone but if it were you, I think I could". I'm still baffled I could even blurt something like that out, but I did, so I'll stand by that.
No idea what the future has in store, and if we'll stay like this permanently or not, but I don't think it'd be earth-shattering if it did end – but it IS looking pretty good as it is now, and it's good that it's nice now. It's definitely a vibe.
Hopefully that can help a little? TwT But yeah, I wasn't trying in the first place to get any kind of relationship like that, so I guess my original situation is slightly different... Either way I wish you all the best and I hope you can find something that works for you!!

hey! howd you make the bitcrunched sounds in your cute goatgirl emotions video?
An anonymous friend of mine produced all the sounds in my Amara animations. For the emotions one specifically, most the sounds are being generated using a modular synth rack, with some very small digital edits in post.
Information about the chain of modules used:
DPO > 100 Grit > Rainmaker > QPAS > Out (controlled by Silent Way)
There was a long directed noise session that we went through afterwards and hand picked sounds for specific actions in the animation.

Okay, noticed something
Asaichi's eye color isn't consistent in a lot of colored art
I think so far, it's been blue twice, and the rest it's been red or yellow/gold.
🎀
Yeah I've noticed that too! They're especially noticeable on the Made In Abyss end card, I was even like… Am I mistaken? Is that not him? But it looks like him and the piercings are the same as Asaichi's… Plus he's had blue eyes in a couple of other places? Anyway, I like yellow but he looks cute with blue eyes too haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edit: If you look real close I think his eyes are blue on the Qpa Vol. 69 cover too!
Tumblr media
On all the merch and stuff he has yellow/gold eyes (& Yoru always has red) so I feel confident we can conclude that's the actual color but I would like an explanation for the times she used blue 🤨

Subterranean cinematic.
This patch didn't go anywhere as I planned - I initially wanted to sample Worm into Nebulae to create a texture I'd loop and modulate with vocal qualities, but I kept getting lost in different sounds, and listening to the way they wormed around each other; they were all fascinating, but none quite piqued me today. Worm of course still made it in, through QPAS and Rainmaker as a textural element (and actually, the one on the most regular beat, funnily enough).
Taiko ping-pongs around via Vice Virga, and Rig and Crucible provide additional percussion - full perc mix through Ikarie and Data Bender.
Bowed sound is root and fifth from Chord mixed and modulated by Planar (controlled by Maestro, again), gated by a flip flop in Constellation (which I'm not sure I've utilized before!) through Sinc Bucina, with subtle panning via Cold Mac. Everything goes through Bib.
The result is a very wide, wet patch. With all the odd rhythms, it gives a sense of being a short loop but also not quite repeating, which gives just enough room for the textural elements to shine through. Not usually the kind of patch I'd make, but it's definitely got something going for it.
