There was a very Rhaenyra-like character in Hightower history
"Ser Jaime, I have seen terrible things in my time," the old man said. "Wars, battles, murders most foul . . . I was a boy in Oldtown when the grey plague took half the city and three-quarters of the Citadel. Lord Hightower burned every ship in port, closed the gates, and commanded his guards to slay all those who tried to flee, be they men, women, or babes in arms. They killed him when the plague had run its course. On the very day he reopened the port, they dragged him from his horse and slit his throat, and his young son's as well. To this day the ignorant in Oldtown will spit at the sound of his name, but Quenton Hightower did what was needed. Your father was that sort of man as well. A man who did what was needed."
- Jaime I, AFFC

Where would be the best place to read about what happened between the Dance of the Dragons and Robert’s rebellion? The World of ice and fire I imagine is one. Does Fire and Blood only focus on the Dance or does it include other sizeable parts of Targaryen rule?
Well, Fire and Blood as it’s published right now only covers up until the early part of Aegon III’s reign, although before then covers the Conquest, Maegor’s tyranny, Jaehaerys and Alysanne’s uneasy peace, and the buildup to the Dance with Viserys’ reign. Dunk and Egg are a series of novellas (3 of which have been published) narrated by a hedge knight who is adopted by his squire, the future Aegon V, and takes place during the reigns of Daeron II and Aenys I; they’re a lot smaller scale than the main series, but there’s some information about the big picture since the deuteragonist is a prince and the protagonist keeps getting himself involved in major historical events. The main series also has interesting tidbits about what happened between Dance and Robert’s Rebellion (which is 150 years of history), which imo are especially good when they don’t involve the Targaryens (like Pycelle’s speech on Quenton Hightower, which is also a good explanation on why he followed Tywin). But you’re right in that TWOIAF is probably the best “one stop shopping” for information about Targ-era Westeros.

HELP I simply must know more about your adorable Starkjoy kiddos!! What are their personalities, what are their relationships like with the rest of the family, etc etc- I just love hearing other Theonsas talk about their oc children!!
I love that people are actually interested in my oc’s.
Ok so we have the oldest Florian, any child raised by Sansa and Theon is obviously going to be well-mannered and kind. Florian unfortunately did take after Theon’s cockiness, but he love’s songs and stories. He really struggled with reading as a child but with specialists that Theon sourced from the citadel he was able to learn techniques. He loves animals and would often bring injured animals into his room and nurse them to health. His biggest passion is breeding fish, he would study them and learn their life cycles, eventually learning how to breed them in captivity bringing a new income and trade to the Iron Islands.
The next son is Quenton, he is known to be extremely philanthropic, he was scorned by his peers who thought that his penchant for charity was too feminine but Theon and Sansa greatly encouraged it. He took to sailing like a fish to water, he was considered a great prodigy and his Aunt Asha took it upon herself to make him her apprentice. As a young man he took to sailing the world, spreading the knowledge hoarded by the maesters as well as helping those in need, he would often bring back books for his favorite siblings the twins Torrhen and Gwendolyn.
Speaking of the twins these two are little genius’s who sometimes lean to being a bit ~evil~. Not really but Torrhen loves learning and is training to be a maester. After witnessing his mother’s difficult birth with his youngest sibling Gilliane, he started looking into ways to help ease childbirth. His interest in the lifecycle led to him assisting with literally any animal birth on the island. He plans on getting just enough links for his chain and then coming back to Pyke to work with his older brother and his mother’s side of the family to establish safer childbirth practices. Where Torrhen was a genius with science Gwendolyn was a master at the histories, while she was the most politically inclined of the Starkjoy’s due to her studies of the Targaryen reign , often proclaiming that she could run the kingdom better than the idiots who ran it to the ground with their dragons, her greatest love was pre-Westeros history, especially those of Old Valyria, the Great Empire of the Dawn, and the First Men. Her goal was to hopefully one day learn where the seastone chair came from. She went behind her parents back, communicating with the heir to the Hightower and eventually establishing a betrothal. While her first intention was to go to the Hightower due to it’s incredible wealth of knowledge she did end up falling in love with her betrothed. As children Torrhen and Gwendolyn were the instigators of many pranks, most of which were focused on their oldest brother and encouraged by Quenton.
The baby of the group is Gilliane and she is absolutely spoiled to no end. She is a mini Sansa, loves the stories and songs, wants to be the perfect Lady, sassy. Her passion in life is art, and she was indulged in her love by her two oldest brothers, Quenton would always bring her pigments and brushes from Essos. She loved to paint the fishes that her brother bred and she would illustrate the books written by her sister. Gilliane and Gwendolyn were very close as sisters despite their 5 year age gap, Gwendolyn would often defend her sister against other children would would try and take advantage of her naïveté. Gilliane was noted by everybody to be very sweet. She isn’t a fan of sailing but would sometimes travel with Quenton so she could assist him in his philanthropy. She was betrothed with the son of the heir to winterfell since they were born just four months apart and everybody knew that she would make a fantastic queen.

Alicent took the brush with the ivory handle, the one Gwayne had gifted her for her fifteenth nameday. Their elder brothers had already left for Oldtown. Quenton for the Citadel, Triston for the Fleet. They had sent her presents of books and ropes of rose pearls. Letters that made her weep with longing for her home.
When would she see the proud walls of Oldtown again? When would she listen to the calls of seagulls at the port as she arrived, perched on a bow of a barge sailing down the Honeywine river? She wanted to walk the cobbled streets to the Starry Sept, to see the old weirwood in the Citadel’s yard. She wanted to chase her brothers up the countless stairs of the Hightower, to hold her mother in her arms for once more, to carve the memory of her scent into every nook of her mind.
King’s Landing was a red dream of kings of this new world; a strange, unprecedented thing. History was being written on its rust-coloured walls, but the bloody ink had not dried yet. The wounds still ached; not even Jaehaerys had soothed them all. Where was the unmarked grave of Ceryse Hightower? No one alive could answer that question anymore. Wet ink and aching scars. Screeches of dragons echoed over the city, reminding each and every soul of the true law of the land.

The similarities between Corlys and his youngest son are well known, but one underrated parallel that I never see brought up, is their tendency to seek reconciliation rather than drawing out a conflict with their enemies.
Whatever monarch Corlys serves, his advice always follows the same pattern:
Cognizant of all these threats, Queen Rhaenyra’s Hand, old Lord Corlys Velaryon, suggested to Her Grace that the time had come to talk. He urged the queen to offer pardons to Lords Baratheon, Hightower, and Lannister if they would bend their knees, swear fealty, and offer hostages to the Iron Throne. The Sea Snake proposed to let the Faith take charge of Dowager Queen Alicent and Queen Helaena, so that they might spend the remainder of their lives in prayer and contemplation. Helaena’s daughter, Jaehaera, could be made his own ward, and in due time be married to Prince Aegon the Younger, binding the two halves of House Targaryen together once again.
— Fire & Blood, The Dying of the Dragons: Rhaenyra Triumphant
He wanted pardons not only for himself, but for all those who had fought for Queen Rhaenyra, and demanded further that Aegon the Younger be given Princess Jaehaera’s hand in marriage, so the two of them might jointly be proclaimed King Aegon’s heirs. “The realm has been split asunder,” he said. “We must needs join it back together.”
— Fire & Blood, The Dying of the Dragons: The Short, Sad Reign of Aegon II
Once more it fell to Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the Tides, to plead for peace, pardon, and reconciliation. “The killing has gone on too long,” the old man said.
— Fire & Blood, Aftermath: The Hour of the Wolf
Alyn, following Corlys’ example, also prefers to make peace offerings with former enemies:
Ser Vaemond’s sons Daemion and Daeron took their claim to the council in King’s Landing. When the Hand and the regents ruled against them, they wisely chose to accept the decision and be reconciled with Lord Alyn, who rewarded them with lands on Driftmark on the condition that they contribute ships to his fleet.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents: The Hooded Hand
Three of the “silent five” had died during the Dance, fighting for Aegon II against Rhaenyra…but two survived, together with Ser Vaemond’s sons, and all came forward now, insisting that they had more right to Driftmark than “this bastard of Hull, whose mother was a mouse.”
[...]
However, the plot to murder their young lord went awry when the guards at Castle Driftmark proved loyal to the Sea Snake’s memory and his chosen heir. Ser Malentine was slain during the attempt; his brother captured. Condemned to death, Ser Rhogar saved his head by taking the black.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents: The Hooded Hand
Though never formally constituted as a Great Council, the gathering of the lords in 136 AC was the largest assembly of nobles in the Seven Kingdoms since the Old King had summoned the lords of the realm to Harrenhal in 101 AC. King’s Landing was soon full to the point of bursting, to the delight of the city’s innkeeps, whores, and merchants.
Most of those attending came from the crownlands, the riverlands, the stormlands…and the Vale, where Lord Oakenfist and Bloody Ben Blackwood had at last forced the Gilded Falcon, the Mad Heir, the Bronze Giant, and all their supporters to bend the knee and do homage to Joffrey Arryn as their liege (Gunthor Royce, Quenton Corbray, and Isembard Arryn were amongst those accompanying Lord Alyn to the gathering, along with Lord Arryn himself).
[...]
Then up stood Oakenfist, to offer the name of Isembard Arryn, the Gilded Falcon of the Vale.
— Fire & Blood, The Lysene Spring and the End of Regency
Reuniting the different branches of the Velaryon family, allowing his would-be killer to live and join the Night’s Watch instead, granting honors to former rebels as a way to assist the Crown. The Sea Snake would most certainly be proud of his successor. :’)

Dif anon. Funny, I always thought of Val as a stand-in for Daenerys, and then there's this white clothing thing and the honey hair and... I've become a confused reader. But I still think that Val is there to reaffirm Jon's aversion and disgust for heinous crimes no matter the proposed justification. At the same time it could be foreshadowing for Dany burning the sick in Meereen? I truly hope not, for the sake of Dany fans.
She does serve as a stand-on for Daenerys at times, definitely. Just not exclusively.
She has shades of Dany, Sansa, possibly even Arya, the proficient horse rider and experienced traveller sent on missions by someone who trusts in her abilities.
I have no thoughts about that theory involving the sick and dying in Meereen. GRRM has been putting more prominence on the role of illness in the books. The story of Quenton Hightower brutally enforcing quarantine in Oldtown, the story of the grey death in Pentos, the pale mare surrounding Meereen, Val and Shireen, Jon Connington... without doubt, something significant is going to happen on the subject, but what exactly..? Not a clue.

2019 & 2010s Best/Worst
Because I like lists and cataloguing the dumb shit I cared about. As my brother once said after seeing and reviewing NOW YOU SEE ME on a lazy Sunday, ‘Some would say it was a waste of time, others might say it was a colossal waste of time.’
I’ll admit, it’s a bit over-the-top. Particularly including the Pats, but yeah, in the Tom Brady era that started when I was 14 as a Freshman in high school to 33 years old now and wrapping up soon-ish (?), there’s not a chance in hell I’ll care as intimately about this shit. I grew up with it at just the right time.

Do you have any headcannons and/or opinions about the various Maesters we’ve spent time with on page (namely Luwin, Cressen, Pycelle and Pylos) regarding their backgrounds and where they came from, or just in general?
That’s a really good question. I didn’t really until you asked, but now that I’ve given it some thought, it’s actually been interesting looking back at the text to look for “clues” in characterization. I’ve always been interested in how the wars of ASOIAF affected fairly ordinary people without much stake in what happens, and talking about these men (though as maesters they’re sort of part of the elite, and they eventually do become participants in castle politics) sort of lets me explore that. Headcanons under the cut:
Pycelle: Canon has him born 216AL. I imagine he was born in Oldtown proper, but not of distinguished birth (maybe a foundling)
I’ve heard the theory that he was a Lannisport cousin/illegitimate Lannister descendant because of his name and loyalty to Tywin over the order, but I feel Pycelle would’ve told the Lannisters about their kinship after he’s threatened by Tyrion/Cersei etc if that were true. He describes what happened with Quenton Hightower when he was “a boy in Oldtown” perhaps not even forging his chain yet, so it makes sense for him to be born there.
I think he was of unimportant birth because of his conspicuous taste for luxury—with the jeweled chains and luxurious robes—outside of his order, which may be due to not having those things growing up and trying to reassure himself that unlike those novices born into luxury, he’s surpassed them in wealth and knowledge through hard work (he’s just beholden to the Lannisters)
In addition to the actions of Quenton Hightower during the Grey Plague, he was also influenced by the sternness of Maekar I and the ruthlessness of Bloodraven, during their tenure as King and Hand. I imagine Oldtown still had Blackfyre supporters after the Third Rebellion, and this led to crackdowns by the Raven’s Teeth he would’ve seen in his formative years; he learned that the strongest rulers “do what needs to be done”, traitors can appear anywhere and must be crushed, and if you aren’t born into ruling, the best you can hope for is to counsel them and hope your service is enough that they’ll reward you. He saw some of the authority figures of his youth in Tywin, though he believed he’d be exempt from meeting a bad end
He studied nearly every subject at the Citadel (having at least one link for medicine, astronomy, history, warcraft, ravencraft, and economy) but not for magic (which he considered the true downfall of Aerys and Bloodraven) though his expertise was medicine and economy
He and Cressen were students of medicine together (though Cressen was 3-4 years younger) with Ebrose under Archmaester Edgerran, though they weren’t friends, being from different regions and social classes
Cressen: Canon has him born 219/220AL. I’ll say he was born in the Stormlands in the area around Storm’s End, due to his closeness to the Baratheons, and to a somewhat distinguished family
I say somewhat distinguished—perhaps the son of a knight—because he chides himself for thinking like “an ignorant fieldhand” and says Davos’ “low birth was written plain upon a common face,” meaning he doesn’t consider himself one of the smallfolk and can speak of them disdainfully. His father saw his intelligence and had him sent to the Citadel as a young teenager
Lived through the same Gray Plague under Quenton Hightower, but took a different lesson from it: how to make food last during a quarantine/siege, how desperate events can drive people to treason, to look out for the innocent, how the sins of the fathers can be visited on their children
Was a little bit of a carouser in his youth after the plague, and understood the value of having fun
Studied ravencraft for a long time under Walgrave (who remembered him fondly), and was privy to the Archmaester’s tragic romance with a Hightower woman (though not a contemporary of his secret son Walys, he did know of him), which made him think about what he put aside being a Maester regarding children
Luwin: he’s got thinning grey hair, and is probably Walys’ replacement at Winterfell, so I’d put him around 65 or born 234AL. I’d say he’s a Riverlander, and of very high (though not Lord Paramount level) birth
I say he’s a Riverlander because he was there to deliver Robb when he was born at Riverrun, and I doubt he traveled all that way from Winterfell in the middle of a war for it. So maybe he was just assigned the position once Walys passed, and was traveling from home to Riverrun and made the journey with Cat after the war was over.
The high birth idea comes from how blunt and easy he is talking with nobles, even those he isn’t close to like Theon, and doesn’t think twice about scolding the Freys. He’s also one of the few maesters who has a Valyrian steel link at a time when magic was at a low of popularity (after Bloodraven’s exile and before Aerys’ pyromania) as well as owning a very expensive Myrish telescope that requires new lenses, so maybe he had the money/time to spare on those pursuits. He’s smallish with grey eyes, which does fit a Frey description (though that would’ve been brought up were he part Frey?), but also knows something of the Children of the Forest, so maybe he’s from one of the Houses sworn to Harrenhal; interested in magic of the Isle of Faces at first, then convinced by the Citadel that it was long gone from the world
He joined the Citadel as an adult, and forged links in history, astronomy (his great passion), medicine, and ravencraft. Unusual was his study of magic under Marwyn, who considered him a fine study, though jaded. He joined Marwyn on some of his meetings with various wizards, and thus gained a lot of skepticism about their stories. This led him to a long study under Archmaester Perestan to discover the “true history” based in textual evidence
Pylos: canon has him born 273/4AL. I’d say he’s a northerner of some wealth if not noble birth, if not a foundling raised to be a Maester like Yandel
I say northerner just because he fits the “honorable Northman” stereotype (such that it is) typified by Ned Stark so well: being solemn beyond his years, hardworking and putting up a minimum of fuss, and willing to risk his life to defy his lord and save an innocent child, he’s got a Greek-inspired name but he’s not ironborn. I say he’s of higher status than Davos, as he laughs away his concerns about reading, but isn’t so noble he’d refuse or grumble about educating Davos and Devan. He knows his courtesies and uses them even when it’s not necessary, which can make him seem stiff. He’s definitely a little out of touch with the realities of ordinary smallfolk life, but that doesn’t keep him from being kind and helpful to them
He had a crash course in the maester subjects, which included ravencraft and medicine, but his passion was for history. He was the student constantly studying for exams while everyone else was out partying, because he wanted to get out of the Citadel as quickly as possible. His contemporary was Willamen Frey, who was also young yet determined to serve a castle quickly. Still feels insecure about being assigned to Dragonstone so young, as other novices could be 10 years older and unassigned.
Thanks for the ask! I always like questions that allow for some creativity.

AP writers select Kansas City defensive back Tyrann Mathieu as first team All-Pro, multiple Chiefs make second team
NEW YORK — Despite not being named to the Pro Bowl roster, Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu was named to his second Associated Press All-Pro team on Friday. Mathieu made first team for defensive backs, and second team for safety.
Mathieu was previously an All-Pro during the 2015 season with the Arizona Cardinals. Signed as free agent in the offseason, he’s led a defensive resurgence in Kansas City, picking off four passes, getting two sacks and posting 75 combined tackles, 63 of them solo.
The Chiefs placed two more players on the second-team offensive roster: Tight end Travis Kelce and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz.
Kelce posted his fourth-straight 1,000+ receiving yard season, the first time a tight end has done that in NFL history. In addition to catching five touchdown passes, he earned his first career rushing touchdown during the Chiefs 23-16 win against New England.
Schwartz is one of the most consistent tackles playing in the NFL. He’s played since 2012, and missed the first snap of his career against Tennessee earlier this season. He still played 99% of offensive snaps in 2019, and was only called for four holding penalties.
Mecole Hardman  was named to the second-team special teams as a kick returner. The Pro Bowl rookie placed third in kick return yards with 704 and his touchdown return against the Chargers in Week 17 tied him for the league lead with 1. Only six other players returned a kickoff for a touchdown, Hardman’s 104-yard scamper was the longest.
Additionally, Chris Jones, Frank Clark and Harrison Butker all received votes from writers at their respective positions.

By SPORTS EDITOR FOR SUSTAIN HEALTH
PUBLISHED: 06:22, 18 December 2019 | UPDATED: 06:28, 18 December 2019
The NFL announced the AFC and NFC All-Stars for the 2020 Pro Bowl presented by Verizon, which kicks off at 3:00 PM ET on Sunday, January 26, and will be televised live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and simulcast on ABC and Disney XD – the third time the game will be available on both broadcast and cable networks.

The Pro Bowl players were determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counted one-third toward determining the 88 All-Star players who were selected to the Pro Bowl. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its All-Star teams. It was also the first professional sports league to offer online All-Star voting in 1995.
Thirty teams had at least one player selected to the 2020 Pro Bowl and 24 clubs had multiple players chosen as All-Stars. The BALTIMORE RAVENS, including second-year quarterback LAMAR JACKSON, placed a league-best 12 players on the Pro Bowl roster, while the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS led the NFC with seven players selected. The 2019 Ravens join the 2007 DALLAS COWBOYS (13 players) and 1973 MIAMI DOLPHINS (12) as the only teams to have at least 12 players selected to the Pro Bowl since 1970.
Twenty-five of the players selected to the Pro Bowl today are first-time All-Stars, including three rookies – defensive end NICK BOSA of the San Francisco 49ers, return specialist MECOLE HARDMAN of the Kansas City Chiefs and return specialist DEONTE HARRIS of the New Orleans Saints.
The 2020 Pro Bowl coaching staffs will be from the losing teams in the AFC and NFC Divisional playoffs with the best regular-season records.
Under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each player on the winning Pro Bowl team receives $70,000, while each player on the losing squad earns $35,000.
Pro Bowl tickets start at just $45 and are on sale at NFL.com/ProBowlOnSale. Get Access to Awesome as fans in attendance can watch and cheer on the Pro Bowl players as they enter the stadium on the Pro Bowl Red Carpet, bringing them closer than ever to the NFL's All-Stars. Concession deals and "Kid Zone" activities will be available inside the stadium. Additionally, fans will be able to enjoy post-game fireworks to conclude the celebration.
