do you ever think about the fact that capcom is holding hostage in a vault all the footage of mutated gina foley like, the devs put all that effort into creating an iconic "first death" and we didn't even get to see it

It’s literally his old hair too why did they do this. It looks like they tried to merge his darkside chronicles face with his re6/damnation face and accidentally created something that looks like neither of them and then they stuck a massive version of his old stiff hair gel abomination style on his head even though they had already figured out a way to create essentially the same cut but more believable in re2make and then tried to find a personality midpoint (verdict still pending) and slapped 20 year old dipshit kid Leon’s voice on top of it because they presumably had not worked out the re4make Leon voice yet and I just have to cope with all of this if I want to see what happens here.

The first Resident Evil I played was RE6. I played RE6 → RE5 → Revelations1→ RE4. CVX, RE1R, RE0, UC, DC, Rev2, RE7 RE2R, RE3R, RE8 and RE4R. That was the order in which I played RE.

So cool how characters in RE contrast each other capabilities-wise.
Chris is an expert marksman and vehicle handler (ex airforce) who mainly relies on grappling and punching for his melee attacks being the tank of a guy that he is.
Leon has crashed almost every vehicle he's driven, mains kicks, and is built more for agility and mobility than tanking hits. This is especially visible in his fight with Chris in RE6 and his fight with Arias in Vendetta. In RE6, Chris is always trying to close the distance to take control over his opponent, but the reason their fight ends in a draw is because Chris throws Leon, which gives Leon the space to react. Kicks also just naturally require more space or are meant to get distance from an opponent. (Not to say they can't ever be used in closer quarters, like popping a low roundhouse, for instance). And Leon's just schmoovin in Vendetta.
In contrast to both, Jill seems to prefer knives and melee over firearms and has an acrobatic/aerial agility flow as opposed to Leon's ground flow, and also mains kicks/distance melee in contrast to Chris' more extreme close quarters style. (this is prevalent in RE5 and Death Island especially). Canonically Jill has bested both Chris and Leon in melee combat. Her win against Chris was probably affected by the alterations made to her by Wesker and also Chris not wanting to hurt her, but nonetheless. Chris is capable enough that he should be able to restrain someone without seriously hurting them. I think this is solid ground to say Jill is the most skilled hand to hand combatant in RE.
Like Chris, she can seriously take a hit. Most RE characters can, given their line of work, but these two especially.
Ada's style is geared toward stealth and efficiency, which lends itself to her more graceful and poised movement style. A lot of her RE4R melees rely on momentum and really putting her whole body into an attack. I don't just mean her spin kicks and hookshot melees, she puts her whole torso into her sidekick to the point that she actually looks away from the opponent because of the torque.
I've not looked as closely at Wesker, but his fighting style is this interesting mix of theatrics and brutal efficiency, which is enhanced by his speed. It all depends on how much he is toying with his opponent. He moves very quickly and hits precisely, but makes a show of it sometimes. See Code Veronica.
Though not really a trained agent or military personnel, Claire's gun handling is second to none. Chris may have been the best marksman in STARS, but I honestly believe that if it's her against him in a shooting contest, she would win. See Code Veronica, Degeneration, Rev2, etc.
A note on pain tolerance, Death Island gives us an interesting insight into that.
I got the sense that the initial viral injection from the drone hurts immensely. Claire is immediately brought to her hands and knees by the pain. This makes sense, as she's not a trained agent of any kind.
Chris lasts a little longer than her, but is soon brought to his hands and knees as well. That's how you know it has to hurt bad, because Chris Redfield, whose whole thing is being a tough guy who can take a hit, is on the ground. However, despite the pain, he still has the presence of mind to try and comfort his sister, which is also a very Chris thing to do.
I was actually quite surprised by Leon's pain tolerance. He toughs it out way longer than Chris did before going to the ground. Even then, he's present enough to aim his gun and throw a flash grenade, demonstrating he can work through more pain that Chris can. Even so, he's still unable to block any kind of attack from Maria or recover correctly after being hit, which makes sense.

Not to be unnormal about RE villains per usual but I like to think of Alex sitting in her secluded tower after most of the island has died off obsessing over her red queen simulator like she's playing the Sims

if i see one more person in the re tag try to claim that alex wesker is “accidentally implied to be trans” bc she mutates from the “women die but men mutate virus” i am going to start throwing bricks. y’all don’t know WHY the writers made that decision for the virus, is the fucking problem. the reason they write the virus like that is literally because people didn’t like shooting women in re4, so in 5 and rev2 they made all the unimportant body bag enemies men, and lazily threw in an in universe explanation that “uh actually the virus just kills women and children and mutates the men” and bc alex is the main boss of the game and the one overseeing the virus, narratively it makes sense for her to mutate bc of the virus you’ve been fighting all game. she’s not trans. and making a character who’s canonically a child abuser and has subtext that could be seen as csa into a trans woman isn’t fucking progressive, it’s transmisogyny that for once comes from the fans and not the writers of these games

so i spent my night watching RE9 speculation videos because, like, i compulsively make bad decisions
and i think people are vastly underestimating the likely scope of this game.
RE6 had an insanely massive budget -- so much so that capcom has refused to release the numbers, despite bragging in the time leading up to release that RE6 was their biggest project ever. for reference, most AAA titles (even today in the 2020s) are budgeted around $60-80mil. so, compared to other big-budget games at the time (GTA5 had about a $135mil budget), people speculate that RE6 probably had close to a $100mil budget.
and RE9 is bigger than that.
not only that, but RE6 only had about a 3-year development cycle. most of its budget was spent on voice talent and advertising.
RE9 is slated to have a 7-year development cycle, and capcom no longer uses union actors.
like
people don't seem to realize that it's not just going to be chris starring in this game. or, it's not just going to be jill.
this game is going to be enormous.
it's not unreasonable to expect this game to have five full-length campaigns in it, one for each: chris, jill, leon, claire, and rebecca.
i really think that that's the reason why we got vendetta and infinite darkness and death island while the games were busy fuckin around with the winters storyline in order to iron out the RE engine and build assets and mechanics. capcom needed to:
a. bring rebecca back into the story and give her an established purpose and presence in it b. bring jill back into the story and finally put to bed the fallout of RE5 (since the last we heard of jill was in rev2 when she was in physical rehab) while also creating a new emotional throughline for her now that wesker is gone and chris is apparently helming his own team c. re-establish leon's storyline as being centered around his relationship with the government and not whatever the fuck was going on in RE6 d. give claire a reason to be out in the field again instead of being a paper pusher and lobbyist e. establish and solidify the relationship between all of these characters f. give nick apostolides a chance to take a crack at OG leon because that's a whole different voice he has to develop (and boy did he not do a great job in ID so i'm glad he got to practice)
all in preparation for RE9.
like this game's going to be a bfd. the more i think about it, the more i become convinced that RE9 is going to retire the entire legacy cast. this is going to be the end for all of them.
