Adam Tooze giving some pitch-perfect pornography targeted at me specifically with Israel's "Gaza 2035: A three-step master plan to build what they call the Gaza-Arish-Sderot Free Trade Zone", capped with an AI generated Gaza-Dubai:
Tumblr media
I'm in love, this is so glorious. "The world if Israel could play around with Gaza like a little set of Legos" tell me this is not identical energy:
Tumblr media
Except its not a shitpost its an actual report from the Office of the Prime Minister. And folks we have got it all! The most convoluted administration system you could possibly imagine for no reason:
The new free trade zone would be administered by Israel, Egypt, and what the Israeli Prime Minister calls the Gaza Rehabilitation Authority (GRA)—a proposed Palestinian-run agency that would oversee reconstruction in Gaza and “manage the Strip’s finances.”
A cutesy little minimalist graphic of all the brand new industries that will magically become globally competitive in export markets because Israel says so:
Tumblr media
The beach resorts are in my beloved!! But what are the little factories you ask? Oh nothing, just electric car production facilities!
Tumblr media
Remember, before building your first factory, you need 18 Burj Khalifas. We economists call this "infrastructure development", take notes.
It will have high-speed rail through its center, oil projects on the coast, and of course, I'm saving the best for last - a rail project to NEOM:
Tumblr media
 🥳The 🥳Line 🥳Mentioned 🥳
The legend on the map literally just says "a mega project" like, oh yeah, one of those! See em all the time.
Now, you might be asking - Ash, if this is your goal wouldn't you have not destroyed every square inch of habitable urban infrastructure in Gaza and shredded their economy into scraps of paper soaked in blood if your plan was to Singapore-on-the-Sea the place? You sweet summer child, those apartments? They are apartments of the past, darling, you don't need organically developed urban ecologies built over time to compliment human habitation. That is for fucking libs. All of this "war" thing was just set-up to create a blank slate for the construction of The Line 2: Its Definitely Real This Time!
I am going to murder James C Scott myself just so I can hover this plan over his corpse and watch the sheer hubris of this monument to the state's desire for legibility and technocratic solutionism resurrect him from the goddamn grave.
"Well....at least after all this they would have to recognize Palestine as a stat-" Woah woah woah woah, hold on:
The final stage would be when Palestine signs the Abraham Accords signaling “Palestinian self-rule,” albeit without statehood
Lets not...lets not get overambitious here. Baby steps, you know? We have to be careful.
Anyway this is the most ludicrously ill-considered and ill-presented reconstruction plan I have ever seen in my life and I shudder to think that, instead of it being an off-hand drip of propaganda intended solely to brush off nosey reporters and diplomats, it might actually be serious. Bibi hasn't let me down yet on the "thinking things through" front!
But tbc if this was fiction - instead of a ruthlessly grim reality - the Regional Deputy Minister of Trade charged with implementing this technocratic abortion would be my precious little blorbo and I would stan her to hell and back.

"Rags"
Noemie and the Gangle sat cross legged on the saint’s stained-glass eye. Noemie sat on the pupil, preparing the rags and oil. The Gangle sat on the tear duct, braiding and unbraiding his hair nervously.
The thirty-foot face to which the eye presumably belonged loomed over them, dominating the cathedral facade. Even though Blessed Aurie had a sweet smile, the empty eyehole made her unnerving. She winked over the city of Morceaux, like a one-eyed demigoddess of old rather than a respectable saint you named streets and colleges for. It wasn’t the nicest feeling to have such a saint looking at you when you were preparing to set someone on fire.
Besides, it felt a bit undevout to sit on her eye. But there was nowhere else to sit. Nowhere except the carpenter’s scaffolding that hugged the cathedral, and rain had turned the platform slimy. Noemie couldn’t risk smearing her black and purple juggling costume. Not right before she was to meet the Consul. The eye was cold and slick with damp, but it had been carefully laid on a piece of canvas at the end of the scaffolding, and seemed clean.
“Gives a new meaning to ‘glass eye,’ don’t it?” the Gangle said, his newly changed voice cracking a little. “Why do you suppose they got rid of her eye? Just to stick it to the priests? Or to give people the creeps?”
“Repairs, probably.” Noemie screwed up the end of the rag and squeezed it down the oil bottle neck. “I think this was one of the buildings they smashed up a few years ago. Maybe they’re just getting around to it now.” She turned the rag a couple of times to better soak it, and pulled it free to add to the pile.
“You’re gonna need to get ‘em wetter.” He prodded one of the wads.
“It’s enough. We’re only trying to set one person on fire, not the whole bloody world.”
The Gangle shrugged. “We’d be a sight toastier, at least.”
Noemie stuffed in another rag, and turned the bottle upside down, just for a moment. The level was getting a bit low. “The point is we burn her clothes a little, then save her. I’ve not got time to save the whole world.”
“It’d be a pretty good way to catch the consul’s eye.”
Noemie corked the bottle firmly, and thrust it into his hands. She pulled herself to her feet by the scaffold’s side rail. “I’m headed down. Watch for my signal. I’ll get as near the stage as I can. When you see me uncover my head, lob the first rag down, and keep at it till one of the kids catches.”
The Gangle spun the bottle on his open palm, staring at it mesmerically. “The cloths are gonna burn out before they hit the ground. I know a better way...”
But she was already laddering down the side, just as the first haunting music sounded from somewhere backstage of the market street.
The Gangle stared up at the dark hole meant for Blessed Aurie's eye. He oughtn't feel they were watched. Quite the opposite.
But he did feel it.

One day in Rome
Tumblr media
Morning in Rome, during the August Kalends. The sun, like burning gold, was slowly rising over the horizon, bathing the city in a soft light that reflected off the marble columns and golden domes of temples. Celeborn stood on the terrace of his domus on Palatine Hill, framed by marble railings and iron vases with laurel. A gentle breeze played with his silver hair, glinting in the sunlight. He wore a tunic of the finest white linen, shimmering subtly in the light, and his belt, fastened with a bronze buckle, was adorned with the symbols of Lórien, barely visible to the human eye.
His gaze drifted over the bustling city, where life was already in full swing. On the Forum, Romans were discussing the latest news, merchants were setting up their stalls, and the city was slowly coming to life. Feeling the pulse of this ancient world beneath his feet, Celeborn listened to the hum of the city—so foreign to him, used to the silence of elven forests, but there was something strangely captivating about it. He leaned against the railing, feeling the smooth coolness of the marble under his hands, and pondered the fleetingness of human life and the endlessness of his own.
Today, he was expected in the Senate, where a discussion about the northern borders, threatened by barbarian raids, was to take place. He knew the Roman patricians viewed him as a mysterious advisor, bringing not only wisdom but also a certain enigmatic power. His past, veiled in legend, commanded respect, though Celeborn himself never sought power over men.
Descending the marble steps into the atrium, decorated with mosaics depicting sea monsters, he glanced at the fountains adorned with statues, from which thin streams of cool water flowed. The servants respectfully opened the doors before him, and he stepped out into the streets of Rome. The crowd, heading towards the Forums, was noisy and bustling, but upon seeing Celeborn's tall and graceful figure, they greeted him with deference. Though his slender, almost ethereal build was more elegant and taller than most Romans, he did not stand out but rather seemed an inseparable part of this city.
His path led past numerous temples and monumental arches, where Roman legionaries marched in formation, and philosophers gathered at the Basilica Ulpia for their endless debates. In the Senate, Tiberius Claudius, an experienced general eager to hear the wisdom of the mysterious elf, awaited him. Celeborn entered the hall where the patricians in their purple togas lounged on marble seats, discussing how best to protect Roman civilization from the barbarians.
Celeborn suggested using the strategies of ancient elven wars but spoke cautiously—too much wisdom might not be well received. He spoke of a system of watchtowers and signal fires that had guarded the elven realms for centuries. The Romans listened with fascination, though some eyed him with suspicion—not everyone was comfortable with the idea of a foreigner, no matter how respected, suggesting changes to their age-old strategies.
When the meeting came to an end and the Senate filled with murmurs of discussion, Celeborn left the building, his steps light and soundless, like those of a hunter in the forest. He headed towards the market, surrounded by colonnades. The chaos here was palpable—the cries of merchants, the smell of exotic spices, leather, and oil filled the air. Celeborn passed by a jeweler’s stall selling ornaments with obsidian and gold inlays. Their gleam reminded him briefly of the precious stones of Tirion and those who once wore such treasures. For a moment, he felt a desire to touch them, but he restrained himself, knowing that this was a world where material wealth was merely a shadow of true values.
Celeborn then made his way to the Basilica Ulpia, where philosophers engaged in discussions about time and existence. The Roman scholars always admired his worldview, which he expressed with subtlety and restraint. He spoke of time as a river, flowing continuously, though each person could only see a small part of its course. His words astonished the listeners, who tried to grasp their meaning, but for them, he remained a mystery—a wise figure from a world where reality seemed like a dream.
In the evening, Celeborn went to the Gardens of Lucullus. The lush trees, entwined with grapevines, cast shadows through which the last rays of the setting sun filtered. A calming silence filled the garden, broken only by the soft murmur of fountains surrounded by blooming roses. This garden was his retreat, a reminder of the distant forests of Lórien and the shadowy groves of Eregion. He sat on a marble bench beneath a towering plane tree and closed his eyes, feeling the presence of nature around him, hearing the music of the wind in the branches.
His gaze rested on a statue of Mercury standing by the fountain, as if reminding him that time flows and changes everything. In that moment, Celeborn pondered his place in this fleeting world. To the people, he was but a momentary enigma, passing along with their generation, but for him, each day was merely a blink in the endless flow of time.
Night fell over Rome. The city lit up with thousands of oil lamps, illuminating the streets and squares. Celeborn rose from the bench, casting one last glance at the garden, now sinking into darkness. He knew that this day, like all others, would become just a drop in the vast sea of time through which he continued his journey—always observing, always learning, but never truly becoming part of this world.

Two new satellites added to Galileo constellation for increased resilience
The European Galileo satellite navigation system keeps growing: a new pair of satellites has joined the constellation after a journey on a Falcon 9 rocket, launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 18 September at 00:50 CEST (17 September 18:50 local time).
The 13th launch in the Galileo programme, performed by SpaceX under contract with ESA, has taken Galileo satellites number 31 and 32 (FM26 and FM32) to medium Earth orbit, extending the constellation to make it more robust and resilient. In the coming weeks, the new satellites will reach their final destination at 23 222 km, where they will be tested prior to starting operations.
ESA Director of Navigation Javier Benedicto said, “With the deployment of these two satellites, Galileo completes its constellation as designed, reaching the required operational satellites plus one spare per orbital plane. The remaining 6 Galileo First Generation satellites are expected to be deployed in 2025 and 2026 for increased robustness and performance, solidifying the resilience and reliability of Galileo and enabling uninterrupted delivery of the world’s most precise navigation.”
ESA, as design authority and system development prime, together with manufacturer OHB, has developed and tested 38 satellites since the conception of Galileo. All but six satellites have been launched, with the remaining ones ready to join the constellation starting next year. They will be launched in pairs by Ariane 6, ESA’s new launcher that successfully completed its inaugural flight in July. Thereafter, the first batch of Galileo Second Generation (G2) satellites, currently under development by Thales Alenia Space and Airbus Defence and Space, will also be placed in orbit by ESA’s heavy launcher.
Galileo, onwards and upwards
2024 has been a busy year in the Galileo programme, that moves ahead at full speed. In April, the first dual launch of the year placed satellites 29 and 30 in orbit. After a successful early orbit phase and test campaign, the pair entered into service in September.
Just a few days prior to the April launch, Galileo’s new Public Regulated Service (PRS) signals started broadcasting. This encrypted navigation service is specifically designed for authorised governmental users and sensitive applications, contributing to increase Europe’s autonomy and resilience in the critical domain of satellite navigation.
Also in April, Galileo’s ground segment, the largest in Europe and one of the continent’s most critical infrastructures, was migrated with no user impact. This upgrade was needed in part to prepare the system for Galileo’s Second Generation, that is being built by European industry. G2 satellites will be ground-breaking with fully digital navigation payloads, electric propulsion, a more powerful navigation antenna, inter-satellite link capacity and an advanced atomic clock configuration.
About Galileo
Galileo is currently the world’s most precise satellite navigation system, serving over four billion smartphone users around the globe since entering Open Service in 2017. All smartphones sold in the European Single Market are now guaranteed Galileo-enabled. In addition, Galileo is making a difference across the fields of rail, maritime, agriculture, financial timing services and rescue operations.
A flagship programme of the EU, Galileo is managed and funded by the European Commission. Since its inception, ESA, as system development prime and design authority, leads the design, development and qualification of the space and ground systems, and procures launch services. ESA is also entrusted with research and development activities for the future of Galileo within the EU programme Horizon Europe. The EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) acts as the system prime for the operational system provider, ensuring exploitation and safe and secure delivery of services while overseeing market demands and application needs.

Kamala Harris's big night.
John Ellis
Aug 22, 2024
1. There’s a saying that economic expansions don’t die of old age: They’re murdered by the Federal Reserve. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has spent the past two years determined to beat inflation even if it resulted in recession. Now he’s on the brink of winning the battle without bringing down the economy, but the next few months will be crucial. If he succeeds and maneuvers the economy to a soft landing that brings inflation down without a big rise in unemployment, it’ll be a historic achievement worthy of the central banking Hall of Fame. If he fails, the economy will slide into recession anyway under the weight of higher interest rates—and he’ll have proved the old maxim about the Fed. Powell and his colleagues have signaled in recent weeks that they’re ready to start cutting rates when they next meet in September, with price pressures now easing but the jobs market cooling. That’s put attention on how fast officials should bring down rates from a two-decade high. For Powell, the last phase of the Fed’s inflation fight marks a make-or-break moment. How he plans his approach will loom over the central bank’s annual conference in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park this week, including during a widely anticipated speech tomorrow. (Source: wsj.com)
2. The U.S. economy added far fewer jobs in 2023 and early 2024 than previously reported, a sign that cracks in the labor market are more severe — and began forming earlier — than initially believed. On Wednesday, the Labor Department said monthly payroll figures overstated job growth by roughly 818,000 in the 12 months that ended in March. That suggests employers added about 174,000 jobs per month during that period, down from the previously reported pace of about 242,000 jobs — a downward revision of about 28 percent. The revisions, which are preliminary, are part of an annual process in which monthly estimates, based on surveys, are reconciled with more accurate but less timely records from state unemployment offices. The updated numbers are the latest sign of vulnerability in the job market, which until recently had appeared rock solid despite months of high interest rates and economists’ warnings of an impending recession.  (Source: nytimes.com)
3. Canada’s two main railroads earlier today locked out over 9,000 employees after they were unable to reach new labor deals with a Teamsters union, the start of a work stoppage that threatens to stanch hundreds of millions of dollars in daily cross-border trade and upend North American supply chains. The simultaneous moves by Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City sent the country’s businesses and policymakers scrambling to limit the fallout, as they warned of serious harm to the world’s 10th-largest economy unless the railroads and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference clinched new agreements. The companies had set a deadline of 12:01 a.m. Eastern time today. (Source: wsj.com)

Dinner Offer: Interlaced Signals - Pt. 2 of ???
Goro bites the bullet and finally contacts Varsha. Is that offer still on the table?

---------
Noon. Japantown. 19th level. The Market.
Goro was methodically pacing through the bazaar. Tracing the route the parade would take through this section where everything he, no, they had worked so hard to achieve would come together.
Looking up to the balconies and footbridges high above, he accessed that shard they procured from Wakako, and Varsha had kindly duplicated for him. As he scanned the buildings, markers pinged in his sight, where speculated and confirmed locations of Arasaka security had set up for the parade. Increased security.
“Hm.” His eyes drifted from one hidden security location to the next, noticing subtle changes, or people that looked slightly out of place.
His mind was thinking of the most troublesome ones that had to be dealt with or he would be dead before he even touched Hanako’s float. The snipers. He had the trio’s locations confirmed. “Vargus and Višnja will have to work swiftly and stealthily.”
That was his main concern besides the netrunner they would have to subdue and disable the security so he could safely enter the float.
He continued his walk. He made a note here. An updated log there. It was best to jot down anything new or odd. He would share with the others so they could properly prepare.
A few more rounds before he finally took a break. A quick stop at one of the vendors for a fresh cup of coffee(or so they said) and he found a place to rest on a bridge.
Leaning against the railing, he looked up to where that prized float would stop for Hanako’s speech. A multitude of calculations ran through his mind. Calculations concerning that jump he would be making. Would his augments be enough? Could he afford some shock-absorbing gear to be on the safe side? He did have some extra cash to do so.
His fingers tightened around the warm cup for a moment before relaxing.
“All will go well.” He told himself. No need to fret over details like that.
As he sipped on his overly bitter coffee, his eyes wandered around the market.
Workers buzzing about like diligent worker bees. Placing decorations and projectors, checking on ones they placed days earlier, and tidying up the place for the festivities that were coming soon. Amazing how quickly they were transforming the place to be more orderly.
He continued to sip his coffee and people-watch. Something he had been doing more frequently after he had stopped being so stubborn and allowed Varsha and her strange ripperdoc “friend” to partially tamper with and reactivate his disabled cyberware around a month or so of their tentative cooperation. The facial obscuring software allowed him to move around more freely, but he was still cautious. He still had a price on his head.
Shifting the cup to one hand, with the other, he brought out his phone. A quick check. In that “note” app to make sure he wasn’t forgetting anything. Just a few more places to check before he headed back to this hideout. All was good.
As he was about to fully back out of the app, he noticed some other notes. Apology notes.
“Hm.” His nose wrinkled for a moment. With a deep exhale he sighed. He opened it and skimmed through.
“How to apologize to Varsha for my assumption?” He mumbled to himself as he scrolled through half-completed drafts and scattered notes he had been working on ever since he had asked the twins for their help to decipher Varsha’s text.
Mind now cluttered with this issue again, he left his current railing perch for another near a more secluded corner so could come up with something decent to send Varsha.
His fingers fluttered away. He sipped that coffee until it was dry in between typing. Minutes passed.
“No, no, no.” He mumbled as he started his tenth draft. Nothing he wrote felt satisfactory. Was he overthinking things?
It wasn’t long before he stopped and gazed into the distance. Eyes bouncing from one neon advertisement to the next and the cars below.
“Perhaps,” he mumbled as something simple was coming to his mind, “perhaps, I can just check in to see how she is doing? To see if the biochip has grown worse?”
He had sent such cursory checks once he and Varsha were on better terms. And, of course, he needed her and the twins alive.
He nodded to himself. “Yes. Start with that and ease my way into that discussion.”
With newfound confidence, he shot off a text to her. Now he just had to wait. He started his walkabout the market again.
About ten minutes into his scouting, his phone buzzed. He checked it.
[Varsha]: Good afternoon, Takemura. I’ve been doing well despite some interference from a minor Relic malfunction.
A faint smile crossed his face, hearing she was doing well, but it soon disappeared as he read the latter half of her message. How “minor” was it? He was about to reply, but noticed she wasn’t done.
[Varsha]: I’m nearly done finalizing our secured network for the parade, as well as additional facial encryptions and scrambling malware. I’ll have the twins deliver the shard to you once done. How are you?
He found a secluded spot to stop and reply back.
[Takemura]: That is good to hear. And good to hear your health is stable.
And he hoped it would continue to stay that way.
[Takemura]: I am doing well, myself. Currently, I’m going over the plans for the parade. The last rounds of scouting before the night comes.
[Varsha]: How wise. Be cautious. My spiders have picked up increased security in some areas.
[Takemura]: I am always. And I have noticed. I will share the details with the twins.
Looked like she was in a good mood. Now how to brooch that topic?
Goro mulled over his thoughts, thinking of how to start. Before he could even type, she sent another message.
[Varsha]: I heard on the vine the twins roped you into joining a few of their gigs the other day. How did that all fair?
He raised a brow. A chuckle escaped his lips. Of course, they would tell her about that. The three had a close bond. Maybe he should answer this and soften her mood some more?
[Takemura]: Yes. They ‘twisted my arm’ by offering me fair cuts and kept to their word. The ventures were successful.
[Varsha]: Good, good. I don’t think the two would dream of double-crossing you. Now, that is.
A chuckled huff slipped out. Now. Was that a subtle jab or tease? He would take it as the latter. He and the twins were on much better terms than in the beginning. Especially him and Višnja. How fiery she was in the beginning, barely held back by her brother and Varsha. Somedays he wondered how close she was to hacking his cyberware to fry his systems.
[Takemura]: Also, before the night was over, the twins delivered to me your gifts. The meals. One home-cooked and the other from a restaurant?
[Varsha]: Yes. The fish came from Mustique. The chef owes me. The curry dish was made by me. I had extra to share. Didn’t want any going to waste.
“Hm…” He shifted his phone between his fingers. She truly had good taste. Would these have been some of the options she would have offered the night?
[Takemura]: Both were delicious. I could taste the flavors. The real food. All have the correct textures.  A nice change of pace from what I’ve had to endure. Thank you for your kindness.
[Varsha]: Glad you liked it. Felt like you could use a change of pace. I’ll pass the compliments on to my friend.
[Takemura]: Thank you… again… I truly mean it.
He tapped his thumbs together. Bite the bullet and bring it up.
[Takemura]: About our conversation that night after the warehouse infiltration.
[Varsha]: Yes?
[Takemura]: I wish to apologize for misinterpreting your offer. I hope I did not offend you.
[Varsha]: No offense was taken. Truthfully, I didn’t notice how you interpreted my offer and just thought you were being your cautious self until Astra, the others, Silverhand, and my roommate pointed it out. Heh, truthfully, I’ve dealt with worse.
Both brows were raised. Really? He had been worrying over nothing.
[Takemura]: You have?
The errant thought slipped through before he realized he sent it. He quickly sent another text.
[Takemura]: Do not answer that. My apologies, again. You don’t have to answer that.
[Varsha]: (o^-’)b
[Takemura]: I do have another question to ask.
[Varsha]: Go ahead.
[Takemura]: Is the dinner offer still available…?
Should he add the next part?
[Takemura]: At your residence?
It wouldn’t hurt. It was worth a shot. He was more comfortable with the more private setting. And wouldn’t mind trying more of her cooking.
[Varsha]: It is. One moment as I sort my thoughts.
Goro took his eyes off his phone for a moment. Shaking his head, a sigh of relief slipped out. How he could overthink things, but so much was on his mind. So much was at stake. Part of him was thankful he didn’t put another dent in his relations with her. He still needed her and the twins for the evidence they had.
It took about a minute before Varsha sent the first flurry of texts. It was a wall of information. She was the detailed sort.
[Varsha]: With our schedules becoming more limited, make yourself free tomorrow evening.
[Varsha]: It won’t be a quiet evening as I will have people over. This may be perceived as a bit morbid to you, but the twins and my dear friend Omar insisted on a preemptive ”goodbye” party, depending on how things go with the parade. This is the best date to squeeze you in. Either way, you’ve met nearly everyone.
As he was reading that, images soon accompanied the next set of texts.
[Varsha]: Omar. My fighter pilot friend you met with me some time ago. He’s told his security detail to “take the night off”, so you won’t be seeing Maddie and Royce.
He recognized the moment in the photo. An unexpected crossing of paths when he and Varsha were doing some work securing additional leads and details concerning Yorinobu and the parade. That jolly Sikh gave Varsha quite the bear hug after spotting her and rushing over. His bodyguards took their sweet time to catch up. Maddie almost seemed embarrassed and Royce was amused, making playful jests at Varsha for not checking her messages.
[Varsha]: Besides them, the twins will be over. As well as Viktor and Misty.
He wasn’t surprised to see that old ripperdoc and the mystic shop owner come up next. Even with their unexpected meeting when he and Varsha were at death’s door, he found them to be pleasant. Trustworthy. Even after Viktor got wind of the finer details of what trouble he was roping his close friends into. It strained their once cordial relationship as Goro noticed the man was oddly short when he would pay a visit for some treatments and the anesthetic wasn’t as “strong”.
The simmering animosity finally came to a head a while ago when Viktor kept him from leaving. They finally talked, though for Goro it felt like more of the similar lecturing he would get from the twins whenever they would poke at his blind loyalty to Arasaka. Yet, part of him was hesitant to admit that maybe there was some truth to their words, even if it was minuscule.
Besides that old-treaded subject, Viktor gave a firm warning. He could vividly remember that evening.
“Whatever you’re planning to do to get to Hanako, don’t get them killed.” Viktor’s voice was still laced with venom, strained with irritation. “Yeah, the twins are still young and dumb, heh, I think we all were at their age…” All the irritation slipped away for a few seconds thinking of folly in his youth, but as quick as it came it slipped back into that serious irritation. “Don’t. Get. Them. Killed. They’re like family to me.”
What happened next caught Goro off guard.
“And for Varsha...” Viktor paused. His shoulders dropped as well as his head, before he shook it. A deep, tired sigh came out. With one hand, he took off his glasses, and with the other, he rubbed his eyes. Seconds passed before he looked at Goro again. He looked so tired. “Varsha… I’ve known her longer than the twins. Even before Jackie… but he’s the reason we actually started talking. A friendship blossomed. She’s Corpo with a strange heart. Hehheheh. Showed a genuine interest in my old boxing days and was never dismissive. Heh.” It was a pained laugh that slipped out as he shook his head. “To think she’s only wrapped up in this mess because she’s got a big heart for those twins…  That Relic would have been in Višnja’s head… We should have pushed more to keep them out of that Heist…”
Viktor took a moment to push the hypotheticals out of his mind. Everything was bleak. He slipped those glasses back on before he folded his hands together and pressed his chin against them. “She’s… she’s like a sister to me. Don’t let her sacrifices be for nothing. Best pray that Hanako of yours can be of help and won’t play games.”
That little conversation led to Goro reanalyzing his previous conversations with Varsha, Višnja, and Vargus(as well as any others) he had recorded. The little comments about their lives and personal details he glossed over or ignored if they weren’t relevant at the time. Despite the generation differences and massive gaps in life experiences, the trio had a strong bond. Varsha truly cared for the twins as she mentored them during their early days with Arasaka and secured a “fair” exit for the two after an “incident” and a semi-retirement for herself. She didn’t have to do that. It would have been easier for her to have ignored the inter-division conflict that finally hit the edge that day and let the twins jump headfirst into their graves, but she intervened.
The rumble of his phone and pings drew him from his thoughts. More messages and photos from Varsha.
[Varsha]: Also, Dr. Eli Rothschild and his daughter, Mithra. You remember both of them from that day, yes?
He recognized them. An “old”, bald dark-skinned gentleman rarely seen without those green-lense click-on glasses and a spunky young woman a shade lighter than him with an afro pulled back in a large bun. A father-daughter pair of more “legal” ripperdocs working for a small joint division of two corporations handling some recycling endeavors in the city; the two enjoyed occasionally moonlighting on the more illicit side. He met them around the same time he met Viktor and Misty. The two knew Varsha’s sophisticated cyberware better than Viktor. Goro was in and out of consciousness but recalled the pair came in as Viktor was prepping Varsha for surgery. Dr. Rothschild assisted Viktor while Mithra helped Misty with his treatment.
From his brief meeting with them here and there to their clinic after hours, the two were pleasant. Even with Varsha footing the bill, he sparingly went to the doctor unless Viktor wasn’t available.
[Takemura]: Yes. I do. Their hands are as good as Viktor’s.
[Varsha]: (o^-’)b Good good. I’m still covering all expenses. No need to pay them.
[Varsha]: And lastly, my roommate and cybersecurity. Malik.
The last set of images appeared on his screen. He had seen many things, both with Arasaka and his current time in Night City, but there were still some appearances that could surprise him.
Just from the portrait photos of her roommate, the tan-skin man had extensive top-of-the-line Netrunning cyberware with the number of coolant lines, ports, cables, and vents he saw, as well as some of the cosmetic wear. And there were scars across his face, especially around his eyes that were plated in gold. If they were scars and not entirely a fashion statement.
“I wonder if he’s had a full-body conversion?” Goro mumbled.
[Varsha]: So don’t be surprised if your software picks up an “unauthorized scan” before you arrive. He loves to double-check even with my reassurances.
[Takemura]: Noted.
That wouldn’t be a problem as long as her roommate didn’t attempt to install some trackers or malware.
He was about to send a message asking for the address before another set of pings came in.
[Varsha]: Ah. Nearly forgot. There will be two more. However, I believe neither will take part in tonight’s festivities.
The first image came in. Goro recognized the young lady. A bright-eyed and equally bright blue-haired photographer and “treasure hunter.” Another friend he wondered how Varsha met and became acquainted with. The two walked very different life paths.
[Varsha]: My dear friend Kitt. Do you remember her from that day? She’s still recovering from what the Scavs did to her.
[Varsha]: Thank you, again, for your assistance that evening. You didn’t have to, as the acquisition of those resources was more important, but you did.
[Takemura]: I remember her. You are welcome. How is her recovery going?
[Varsha]: Slow, but well. She’ll most likely be resting that night.
This was one of the events he reanalyzed after his talk with Viktor. Kitt was more than a friend to Varsha. From what he observed, he believed she bordered that familial territory, with Varsha acting rather motherly towards her. It also explained why Varsha detested the Scavs so much. What they did to that girl. It was a miracle she was still alive.
It was a heated evening trading gunfire and quickhacks in a rundown apartment block. Varsha even allowed her more unruly AI companions to run rampant, but they were successful in rescuing her friend, who was in rough shape. Varsha thanked him for his help despite the dangers. In a way, she was still surprised he offered his assistance. Was it out of sympathy or so he didn’t lose an important asset? It didn’t matter. Part of her icy demeanor towards him thawed. She covered all his expenses for the ammunition spent and the visit he would have to pay to Viktor.
[Varsha]: And last but not least, your driver. Package Runner, Otxo.
The last set of images came through.
A biker sat on a Brennan Apollo that had been customized for package running. There was no “face” to the biker as they wore a black helmet that had cat ears. And it was impossible to make out their skin tone with the jumpsuit and jacket they wore. What stood out was a logo on the bike and jacket. 9 Lives Delivery; a stylized tiger trotted along, its tail coiled around a trolley filled with packages.
[Varsha]: They are a highly reliable individual and can be discrete despite their appearance. They are my favorite person to contract for package running.
[Varsha]: Contact them around 19:00 tonight to trade information. They know the backdoor to get into the complex where you won’t be seen.
Goro studied the images a little longer. He didn’t like he couldn’t see their face. But they must have had a good reason to hide it. Package runner. He nodded at that. They most likely handled confidential and illicit goods. A concealed identity would be best for such work.
[Takemura]: Otxo… How does one pronounce that name?
[Varsha]: Per their request, similar to the Spanish word: Ocho.
[Takemura]: Ok. And thank you, once again, for the invitation. I will make sure I arrive on time. Shall I bring anything?
[Varsha]: Pleased to have you coming. You’re welcome to bring whatever, but nothing is needed. Everything from food to drinks is covered.
The conversation came to an end after Goro sent up her information from his latest round scoping out the bazaar.
With that done and a weight lifted from his shoulders, Goro spent some more time scoping out the bazaar before completing some other errands for the day.
On his way home, he stopped at a boutique to buy some more cheap but “formal” clothes and some nice-smelling soap. He was going to make sure he looked presentable for the evening.
Once back at his safe house, he cleared a space for what he purchased, making sure everything stayed clean. He spent the rest of his evening cleaning and shining his boots and jacket as he caught up on the news.
He made sure to contact Oxto around 19:00 to trade information. Their text conversations were short and straight to the point. Tomorrow around 18:05, he would meet them around one of the back alleys to an apartment in Japantown.
With everything set, he finished up for the evening and turned in. He had a few things to prepare for before the dinner party.

The Three Gables
The lack of posts on this one is a clear demonstration of the clear rejection of the racism running through this story.
I can't say that I'm particularly enthusiastic about doing this one, but I can't pretend this one doesn't exist.
Here we go then:
First published in 1926, the Americans again got this one first.
Boxing for money was heavily regulated to the point of outright bans in much of the United States; illegal fights would frequently end as "no contest" when the police turned up.
The Bull Ring in Birmingham is a major shopping area that goes back to a market established in 1154 under royal approval. The area is named for a ring of iron that bulls were tied to for the purposes of bull-baiting, a 'sport' banned in 1835.
The area was redeveloped in the 1960s into an enclosed shopping centre considered an epitome of Brutalist architecture and which became more unpopular over time. It was replaced in 2003 by a more modern centre, branded "Bullring" that is just as controversial.
Harrow Weald is a suburban area of what is now Greater London. It still contains a large amount of ancient woodland despite major development in the early 1930s, such as Harrow Weald Common.
One highly notable resident of the area was W.S. Gilbert of operetta fame, who lived at a house called Grim's Dyke and died of a heart attack in the lake in 1911 while saving a 17-year-old girl from drowning during a swimming lesson. The lake was mostly drained after that and what is left was filled with algae during my visit to the area early this year - the London Loop footpath goes through the area.
The "Weald Station" is probably, as per Bernard Davies, Harrow & Wealdstone station. This is today the northern terminus of the Bakerloo Line, which reached there in 1917 when services were extended on the newly electrified lines to Watford Junction; London Overground services call there on their way to the latter destination. LNWR and Southern services also are available, while Avanti West Coast and Caledonian Sleeper trains go through without stopping on platforms generally closed unless a train is calling there.
The station was also the site of the worst peacetime rail disaster in British history in 1952 (only the 1915 Quintinshill rail disaster has a higher death toll) - an express train collided with the rear of a local train in fog and then another express train hit the wreckage. 112 people died and 340 were injured. Since the crew of the express train died in the crash, the precise reason why they failed to respond to two signals was impossible to establish. The result of the report was a faster introduction into service of the Automatic Warning System or AWS that gives a driver an in-cab indication of the state of a signal by visual and auditory means.
A two-station branch line to Stanmore Village closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts.
Paregoric is a 4% tincture of opium, then available over the counter without prescription. Its main uses would be for treating diarrhoea, treating teething pains in children and as a cough medicine. It is today a Schedule III controlled substance in the US i.e. prescription only.
Crown Derby refers to Royal Crown Derby, a porcelain company founded c.1750 and still going today; it may be the oldest still active company in that field in England.
Langdale Pike is clearly a pseudonym, referring to a series of peaks in the Lake District.
This is, fortunately, the only time we have the n-word being used in the canon. It was considered a crude term even then.
Pernambuco is a state in NE Brazil, then a centre of sugarcane cultivation, still a major part of its economy. It was historically Portuguese, not Spanish.
Yes, let's stereotype Latina women, shall we, Mr. Doyle? I'm not calling you Sir Arthur in this discussion; you're not acting like a knight.
This whole thing leaves a rather ugly taste and if I could strike a story from the canon, I would do it for this one.

When it comes to Australia’s national regulators, women rule.
Women now dominate the leadership of federal regulatory and oversight agencies that enforce rules for business and the economy, with 33 women holding chief executive or chair roles. This signals a profound shift for the nation’s top watchdogs, once almost solely the domain of male enforcers.
Rapid digitisation and rising globalisation are making traditional black letter enforcement approaches less effective, leading to women with so-called solid soft skills, such as influence, collaboration and communication, winning top-tier regulatory roles.
Women are now at the front line of the battles against scams, identity and data theft, cyber ransomware attacks, electronic espionage, digital surveillance, misinformation, social media abuse and dark web criminality.
“It’s very different to the skills base you needed a decade or two ago where it was just about telling people what to do, and they would toe the line,” says Ann Sherry, a former head of the Office of Status of Women in the Hawke and Keating governments.
“Those jobs were filled by a particular sort of person cast as a regulator. So, in a way, it was almost an enforcement role, whereas the jobs have changed.”
The leadership of the federal public service reached gender equilibrium last year.
Sherry, who is now QUT chancellor and chairs Queensland Airports, digital marketing firm Enero and UNICEF Australia, says that the public sector has been better at promoting women through the ranks but that many women have also built relevant skills in the private sector.
“Many women have had to broaden their careers and build a broad set of skills to be successful. There is now a body of capability to draw up. The talent pool has changed, and the jobs require broader skills. It is a confluence of events,” she says.
The surge in women leading federal regulators compares with 19 women (10 per cent) chairing ASX200 companies and 26 women (9 per cent) who are CEOs across the ASX300, as at the end of 2023.
Competition chief Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Reserve Bank of Australia governor Michele Bullock (who also chairs the Payments System Board) are the first women to lead their institutions. Others, such as media watchdog Nerida O’Loughlin and energy regulator Clare Savage, have won second appointments.
A push to bring in new blood from outside the Australian public service helped veteran NSW regulator Elizabeth Tydd win an appointment as head of the Australian Information Commission. Carly Kind was tapped from a London think tank to be the new privacy commissioner.
They join a swag of women now overseeing vast swaths of the economy, including infrastructure (Gabrielle Trainor), aviation (Pip Spence), food (Sandra Cuthbert), petroleum (Sue McCarrey) and fisheries (Helen Kroger).
Others such as Rachel Noble (espionage), Julie Inman Grant (e-safety), Jayde Richmond (anti-scams centre) and Michelle McGuinness (cyber co-ordinator) are focused on rapidly emerging harms, including national security threats, identity and data theft, consumer abuse, online scams and fraud.
Workplace and safety regulators are now dominated by women too, including Anna Booth (Fair Work Ombudsman), Joanne Farrell (Safe Work Australia), Jeanine Drummond (maritime safety), Natalie Pelham (rail safety) and Janet Anderson (aged care).
The dominant role female regulators play has been part of a profound shift in the number of women in leadership roles in the Australian government. This has risen from a quarter of executive roles being held by women 20 years ago to over 50 per cent last year.
Battle ready
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb, who rose through the ranks as a competition lawyer at law firm Gilbert and Tobin, says her generation of leaders had battled their way through male-dominated workplaces.
“In those workplaces, to get ahead, we needed to target the areas we thought were most important to make an intervention and where we could most effectively make an impact.
“We actually had to build skills to succeed, which are beneficial skills in these roles.”
Ms Cass-Gottlieb says women have also had to differentiate themselves. “You needed to point to other ways of working, including creative and different solutions that drew from experience in various areas rather than a pure step-by-step standard career path.”
Australian Information Commissioner Tydd points to Columbia University research that measured creativity by analysing songs, finding that women created more songs than men.
“Digital government requires a creative use of proactive tools to identify and mitigate future harm. It’s the unforeseen or latent harms that are the most refractory and so we’ve got to look at diagnosis and predictive tools, and that’s where you start to get a bit creative.”
Tydd says she was attracted to regulatory work because of the value of promoting open government, transparency and accountability.
“I think that seeking service and purpose orientation are factors that drive people into this work and I do think seeking service is a very comfortable and well-established motivation within women.”
Demand for new approaches
According to ANU Crawford School of Public Policy director Professor Janine O’Flynn, the data on the importance of public motivation for women is mixed. However, she suggests that women’s more attuned risk and relationship skills help them to be more effective regulators.
“We certainly know that the most effective models of regulation are around how you can think about risk and how you build relationships with the parties that have been regulated.
“I don’t mean that in a sort of dodgy way. The higher the trust relationships you can get between regulators and those who are regulated, the more likely you are to get the outcomes that you’re looking for.”

Morning Hues Of Sky (He/She)
Slightly younger than his Big Sister Moon, MHOS was a city that was the largest hub for a trade, shops, markets and food. It functioned as a giant "mall" or rather an open market of different trades and a good place to come to spend and earn money for the ancients.
Being mostly filled with floors full of shops and stands, there wasn't a lot of apartment buildings but it had a lot of rails and entrances for the sellers to bring their goods and for buyers to arrive and leave. There is a living quarter bellow the level where some shop keepers did live but since there were agriculture fields and farms and such right next to the city, there was no need for all of them to stay there.
It was also those very farmers who named her Morning Hues Of Sky, indicating early starts of the day when most of the sellers were awake and setting up for another day of trade.
Nowadays, the city resembles those abandoned mall images taken over by nature due to time. Bunch of liminal space with sense that once lively place full of work is frozen in time and covered in plants.
Abandoned by the ancients, MHOS had a stage where he was angry and upset by the idea of being left behind, much like many of his siblings. With time, frustration faded away as he started to turn to what was present at the time, being the ever so evolving and developed creatures that started to inhabit the city.
Eventually she grew found of tribes of scavengers and how they developed, survived and grew among other animals. MHOS started taking interest in the development of messengers but then experimented personally with scavengers instead of slugcats, discovering their perks and cons in comparison.
MHOS himself is a playful iterator. While he wasn't like that at first, working hard with ancients around and then just growing angry as they disappeared. With the triple affirmative of SOS, he grew more frustrated and vain, snapping at fellow iterators in chat and spamming until he was either kicked out or left the groups on his own. Eventually took time to calm down turn to things that use to look unimportant and significant. Suddenly things were much brighter and fun.
At the moment the task of finding the great solution is put to side to focus on ways to stay in contact with siblings. She claims she is focusing on the task but that's not really the case and is lying to her siblings. After observing the critters around her domain, she settled on the idea of cycles existing for a reason and coming to accepting that if they were meant to escape the cycle of life and death then there wouldn't be cycles at all. There was suddenly comfort that lives will continue to exist even with ancients gone.
The Advocate AKA Ad (He/Him)
A personal experiment of MHOS, this scavenger was first grown of his kind to have mark of communication from birth onwards. MHOS is fairly attached to him but due to the experiments Ad is growing and ageing faster. He is a test subject to see how well he traverses and travels to carry signals for communication which he carries on his back in form of broadcast dishes, acting as a less effective but mobile antenna. He can understand MHOS but he can't speak back outside of body language.
Ad is a bit of grump, not exactly annoyed by anything in particular but his oddly built body and rapid ageing would result in exhaustion if he strain himself for too long so he dens between cycles often. He feels most comfort among other scavengers but never stays too long between packs and tribes to grow too attached to them. MHOS tends to drive him crazy with cuddles, which he is not a fan of at all as he use to be somewhat smothered with love and care by his iterator as young cub. Ad doesn't hate him but staying away and just being in contact via broadcasting and overseer is better.
The two "holes" on his head is how he "hears" the broadcasts.
Pup Emergency AKA PE or just Pup (???/it/its)
Little fella that was misplaced by its group of slugcats. Supposedly they are all fine but the pup has no idea where they left off to. With no proper sense of direction, it stumbled onto Ad and his mission of traveling to carry broadcast was temporarily put to side as MHOS called in the code: Pup Emergency. Ad is now its temporary caretaker in search for the slugpup group pup belongs to.
Very curious pup that doesn't seem to hold fear for a lot of things. Surprisingly good with a spear but ever since it met Ad it just hides behind bigger and stronger scavenger. Wanders off a lot, giving Ad a lot of scare moments because he knows he won't hear the end of it if something happened to the Pup while under his code and care.
Loves to eat centipedes.

"Reciprocity Benefits" cigar
"Uncle Sam - I'll smoke it, you may smell it."
From the Berlin (Kitchener) News Record, September 6 1911
[Context from my pal DN]: The 1911 federal election was the first "free trade" election. In office since 1896, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier's Liberals sought their fifth consecutive sweeping majority. President Taft's proposal of lowering tariffs became the central political issue. Wrapped in the Union Jack, Robert Borden's Conservatives opposed free trade and argued that Canada would be taken over by the United States.
The election was close but the Conservatives came out ahead. The entrenched Liberal machine built around Laurier ensured the Liberals carried Quebec, but with a significant loss of seats to the Conservatives. The Liberals also carried Atlantic Canada, but just barely, signalling the crumbling of the old opposition to Confederation in the 1860s in which it was correctly predicted that losing free trade with New England would result in Atlantic Canadian industry being swallowed up by Montreal capital. The predictions came true, and Nova Scotia in particular suffered through a wave of deindustrializatoin in the 1880s and 1890s as Montreal capital bought up local concerns and shuttered them in favour of greater concentrations of industry in Montreal and the St. Lawrence Valley.
In the new prairie provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, the Liberals continued to dominate as colonization rapidly expanded the number of farmers who quickly found themselves locked into an east-west trade cartel controlled by the rail monopolies of CPR, Canadian Northern, and the Grand Trunk Pacific (the latter two would be nationalized and form Canadian National in 1919). The farmers were incensed that they were blocked from trading south to American markets at cheaper freight rates.
The Conservatives cut into Liberal support in Quebec and Atlantic Canada, but the bulk of its support came from Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia - the three Anglo provinces where industrial capitalism had taken hold during the "Second Industrial Revolution" that began in the 1890s. Not only that, but Ontario, Manitoba and BC were politically dominated by the most militant Anglo founders of Confederation. Through the Orange Terror of the 1870s against the Métis and their democratic allies, and a sustained political struggle against French language schooling rights, the bilingual and multicultural character of Manitoba had been legally and politically extinguished by the mid-1890s (and was a contributing factor to Laurier's Liberals winning the 1896 election, ending 18 years of Conservative rule).
Likewise, British Columbia was politically loyal to the project of Confederation. It had been aggressively established as a British colonial outpost in the 1850s for the Empire's project of a united British North America and establishing a British base in the northwestern Pacific. The 1860s was marked by a series of colonial wars and punitive expeditions by British gunboats, redcoats and settler terrorist groups. Colonial victory was achieved with the deliberate smallpox genocide of Indigenous peoples on Vancouver Island which spread to Haida Gwaii and the mainland. Estimates of 15,000 to 30,000 Indigenous peoples died in a year - half the Indigenous population of Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. White people in Victoria, population 5,000 in 1862, were busy getting vaccinated, the smallpox vaccine having been discovered decades before available in the Pacific Northwest by the 1850s. By 1911, British Columbia had become a major coal and lumber exporter and the terminus of three new transcontinental railroads (CPR at Port Moody and Granville; Canadian Northern at Port Mann and later Pacific Central Station; Grand Trunk Pacific at Prince Rupert).
It seemed like the Conservatives had re-established their once-powerful "National Policy" coalition of British imperialists, Canadian capitalists and the Anglo working class. However, the Second Industrial Revolution, the two new transcontinental railways, and colonization of the prairies had radically expanded and altered the character of the industrial working class and the role of the state in society. The brewing rebellion of farmers, the Vancouver Coal Wars of 1912-1914, the great IWW strike of the Grand Trunk Pacific in 1913, and the success of state capitalist development (Ontario Hydro Commission - 1906, Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway - 1902, King's Industrial Disputes Investigation Act - 1907) were all harbingers of radical change that exploded with the pressure cooker of the Great War.
Farmers struck out on their own after the war with farmer parties taking power in Ontario (1919), Alberta (1921) and Manitoba (1922). The working-class insurgency of 1919 shook the ruling class and forged a broad and complex vanguard of radical working-class politics and action that formed a foundation for the great class struggles of the 1930s and 1940s.
The Conservatives, during and immediately following the war, were pressed to concede the vote of women, albeit through opportunistic means to win the 1917 election in favour of conscription, nationalize the CNoR and Grand Trunk in 1919, and lose its popular "producer" base that had won it power in 1911 and undergirded its electoral success during the first 30 years of Confederation.
Ever the opportunists, the Liberals under King abandoned the free trade mantra and spent the next 30 years overseeing the renovation of the Canadian state in the interest of capital while playing a ruthless game of stick, carrot and more stick against the growing insurgency of the "producer" classes which had grown too large and self-conscious to contain within a bourgeois two-party system.
The next seventy years would hold to this pattern until the economic base of the farmer and labour movements had sufficiently crumbled by the 1980s, at which point the Progressive Conservatives (a name courtesy of a 1940s merger of the Conservatives and a section of the farmer-based Progressives) pulled the plug on the National Policy of protective tariffs and home market development in favour of free trade with the United States.
With Mulroney's victory in the 1988 "free trade" election and subsequent refusal of provincial governments to challenge the free trade agreement (Bob Rae promised he would during his successful 1990 election campaign), the old 20th century political arrangements have collapsed. The small farmer class has disappeared to political insignificance. The working-class has been radically transformed since deindustrialization and free trade. The three-party political system that dominated the 1919-1990 period has collapsed and been remade with new coalitions of forces and factions - even if the party names carry forward into a new century.
With one "producer" class still standing - the working class - and the colonial and capitalist failures of Confederation coming home to roost at home and abroad, can a new vision and program for Canada be forged by a new working-class movement?

Hi!!! Hellloooo!! 😁
Request for a quick (maybe somewhat sexy) drabble of finding out Copia has never built a blanket fort, so you build one together?
💖 Thank you for the ask, cause I needed after thinking about some other stuff yesterday.
Anyways enough about that's, a quick cuddle with some fluff that will inevitably turn into sinful smut coming up....

Papa's Blanket Fort
Also available here on A03!
Definitely NSFW below the cut
"You can't be serious? You never did that as a kid?" You asked him, leaning up on the bed baffled. You blinked your eyes at him, clearing your vision as if it would lessen your confusion.
"Sí, I didn't have much of a traditional childhood amore. There was no one really to play games with or build ah...well...um what did you call them?" Copia asked, unable to recall the words.
"Blanket forts." You said plainly. You felt your heart break at your lover's confession. It made you so sad that even the small comforts and joys of a normal childhood were kept from him. If it were up to you, you'd find a way to give him all the things he missed out on—then you got a great idea.
"Cope, stand up." You said, jumping up out and out of the bed. Copia, the poor thing was so confused, furrowing his brows and only a bit concerned you'd lost it.
"Why? What is it?" He asked you. You let out a huff, dropping down your shoulders and putting your hand on your hips to signal to him you meant business.
"Please just do it. Come on." You begged, watching as he reluctantly pulled himself out of bed standing opposite you on the floor. You started tugging at the sheets, throwing pillows down on the floor, and clamoring around for extra blankets. Copia watched you, both intrigued and a little scared at your determination.
"We, my dear Papa, are making a blanket fort…and so help me Lucifer you are gonna have some fun." You vowed. The serious tone of your voice with such a silly subject made Copia unable to help his laughter. He helped you, placing out pillows on the floor and tucking sheets under books and over the bed rails. Suddenly a vase Copia had used for support came crashing down, shattering next to the bed.
"Well we will hear about that one later." Copia chuckled. Both of you knowing Sister Imperator would be cross about it, but neither of you cared. You both continued on, Copia cleaning up the broken pieces and you finishing up your multi-blanket masterpiece.
It was a special moment. The laughter and love between you as you worked together, you swatting him with a pillow and him bringing the rats out to scurry over the sheets, was absolutely magical.
"Here Cope, we're almost done. Take this side and tuck it under there." You told him, your Papa doing as he was told and the two of you climbed into your pillowy sanctuary. The two of you laid beside each other, beneath the cascade of sheets above you. Both giggling like children and enjoying the lighthearted moment between you.
"You know cara, no one has ever done anything like this for me. Thank you." Copia said, bringing his lips to yours. A warm, welcome sensation that sent tingles throughout your body. You couldn't be more in love.
"Next week we make s'mores…just need to head out to the market first." You smiled, determined to give him all the experiences he'd missed out on.
"Sounds good." Copia said as he slid his fingers across your stomach and down to the edge of your panties, a sly smile spreading across his face. "What do you say cara mia, we take advantage of this romantic setting and have some more…adult fun?" He growled kissing along your neck. You purred with his touch, teasing you, touching just outside the fabric of your panties.
"Absolutely" you hummed as he brought his mouth over yours and sank his fingers into your entrance, wet and waiting for him. You writhed beneath him, his fingers pumping steadily inside you.
"Mmm…so wet for your Papa, maybe we should build forts more often." Copia purred as he continued gently working you with his hand. You reached over him, running your hand across his growing bulge. He moaned as you touched him, his cock twitching beneath his boxers.
"Yes Papa, I think that's a great idea."

Waging War: An Age of Steam and Sorcery novel. Chapter Eight.
“Soooo, I’m probs going to have to log out soon,” Peter said. “I know it’s early but I have to get home before dark.”
Dani looked around, confusion evident on her face. “Uh, ok mate. You do that.”
“You can’t get signal in your house?” Warren asked.
“I can try, but you know my mum,” Peter waved a hand. “Or, maybe you don’t? Anyway, she hated The Age because my Dad worked on it. Now that they’re getting divorced she hates it more. If she finds out it’s the game I’m invested in, watch out.”
“Then we’re going to have to wrap it up soonish I suppose,” Pham complained. “We’ve barely started the run.”
“Ehhh, we’ve some a long way from Averton.” Peter countered. “Woz picked a fight with his cousin and we’ve just arrived in a new city.”
They had all left the house via the church and were leaning on the rail that looked out over the water. The wind ruffled their hair and brought the scent of salt water to their noses. Peter marvelled again at the realism of the game world he found himself in. Over the edge, seagulls wheeled and cried. They cold see the roiling masses as Travellers and NPCs mingled in the streets and markets. Many Travellers distinguished themselves with distinctively magical or powerful technological equipment, though many more were less identifiable as one or the other. In a city like this, the watch patrolled in matched groups, pairing a clear mages with high-tech partners.
When Peter pointed out this fact, Pham explained. “Tech interferes with magic, magic interferes with tech. You put a machine pistol in the hand of a wizard, it’ll jam. If an engineer picks up a wand, it could explode. Or turn into a duck. Duck. I’m trying to say duck, why can’t I say duck?”
“Profanity filter for underage players?” Peter suggested.
“Fork that.”
Dani’s confusion deepened, but she shrugged it off. She was used to Pham being weird by now. “So, if you have to head out soon on a solo quest, why don’t we stock up on consumables?”
“Ach, weel,” Warren agreed, “Tha’s a bonny idee. The dungeon we’re aboot to delve is full o’ danger. Peter’s gonnae need a potion belt anna full load. Furst stop will be the blacksmith though. Imma need some dents knocked out. Reckon Pham’ll need a spot ‘o parts an’ Dani’s short a shot or two I’d say.”
“Woz, is your accent back because you’re about to go up against your cousin again?” Pham asked.
“Ah dinnae ken what yer on aboot,” Warren stared off into the distance, Dorian style. :Nae wheest yersel.”
“You’re not entirely wrong, mate,” Dani said. “I’m getting a bit short on bolts for the crossbows, but I’m not sure how that’ll go now I’ve got the new bang stick.”
Knowing they were on a timetable, the four took a funicular to the bazaar to stock up for the next night’s adventure. Their first stop was, as Warren suggested, the blacksmith shop.
Unlike Averton, the shop the entered was purely devoted to supplying melee fighters with protective apparel. There were no weapons on the walls, just pieces of armour in various hues and weights. Peter marvelled at a codpiece on a rack in the deepest recesses of the shop, close by to the forge itself. It was held at chest height on a rack made of what appeared to be solid steel, and thick steel at that. Peter tried his Appraise skill on it, but only received a series of question marks in response. All he could glean was the name, Codpiece of the Donkey, Slayer of Dragons.
Must be well above my level, he realised as he read the description. I hope that thing has some spectacular disease resistance.
Warren strode straight up to the smith and held out a suit of armour in a pile. Peter recognised it as the suit Warren had worn in the fight against the Paragon of  Lust, the person who claimed to have been in a relationship with his father. Peter was a little conflicted about having absorbed the soul of that person, but only a litte. That said soul was now being used to power Bani’s house definitely offset any guilt.
Peter left the blacksmith and went looking for a place that specialised in leather armour. His own protective equipment was looking a bit worse for wear after his last respawn. After angering the Heart of the Forest, every single mob in the whole zone had descended on him and he’d not gone quietly into the night. His fight or flight instinct had kicked in, and his wings weren’t yet big enough to support his weight.
Dani and Pham went shopping together. Despite their differences, the components they needed were quite similar and sold at the same shops.
“So what you’re saying is that your needle launcher still consumes resources?” Phma asked.
“Yeah, the tier two shots need stuff to power their effects,” Dani said. “It came with a full tank, but I used up a whole bunch of components while we were hunting in the woods.”
“So where does it go in?” Pham asked, intrigued. “It’s not like there’s a funnel or anything.”
“I’m running a bit short of basic poison,” Dani held up the weapon she’d received from defeating Lust and completing a Geas. She pressed on a catch and the base of the barrel-like buttstock opened on a hinge. She took what looked like a bound tuft of grass from a pouch and dropped it in and closed the lid. After a moment, one of the crystal chambers swirled with bubbles and filled slightly with green liquid. “That was snake grass from the Grogmarsh. Not the strongest toxin I have, but this thing doesn’t seem to care.”
“So what you’re saying is that any toxin will do to fill the poison chamber?” Pham marvelled. “The nature of the toxin doesn’t matter?”
“The more exotic the toxin the more it drains the chamber,” Dani explained, “but also the more exotic the component the more it fills, it seems.” Dani popped open the butt of the weapon and produced a vial with a glass dropper. “Necrotoxin, one drop.” The single drop filled the chamber completely.
“Daaaaaang, where’d you get that stuff?”
Dani paused for a moment to think. “Some bloke called Asano, I think? An affliction specialist.”
“Affliction magic?” Dani pulled a face. “Ugh. I hate magicians.”
“I’ve noticed that, but why?” Dani asked.
“Because it all happens by magic,” Dani grimaced. “In this world everything happens via either science or magic. I can figure out how the science part works. You can run the numbers and get solid results. When you introduce magic anything can happen. The rules go out the window.”
“Magic has rules too, you know.”
“Sure it does,” Pham dismissed, walking off.
When the four met up once more in the square that looked over the water, they compared their finds. Dani’s weapon was slung over her back, bubbling with liquids of multiple hues. Pham had a small riot of clanks following him. Warren and Peter were still wearing the same armour as before but had a few new accessories.
“So,” Peter said, “I gotta go now, but we hit a dungeon tomorrow night, yes?”
“Aye, tis true,” Warren confirmed. “I see your new belt is full Peter. Ancient potions?”
Peter modelled his new potion belt, the four loops bearing red flasks. “Yeah, they taste pretty good. Pricey but worth it.”
“And they’ve been tested so they don’t give you a bad reaction?” Dani confirmed.
Peter nodded, knowing what happened last time. “Pham, you seem to have built an army there.”
“Pffft,” Pham dismissed. “This isn’t an army. I’ve just been experimenting with the scales. Each one of my new friends has a different effect. I was just able to measure the payload more accurately.”
“Payload?” Warren asked. “Last time you used that word I got very worried. Should I be worried this time?”
“Oh yeah, for sure. We are headed into the same dungeon, after all.”
