Week 7 @daycarefriendpickup magma art! 🐸🌧
Decided this week to doodle up some art of @crabsnpersimmons raincoat Sun and Moon designs from their Rain or shine AU! The designs are super cute so I just had to doodle something up for them!
I wonder if they would make some little froggy friends while splashing in puddles, I can sure imagine they'd have fun hopping along with them!

A Flicker in a Distant Timeline
CW: references to violence, loss of a limb, blood.
--
Like this, the King of Evil didn’t look like much—sweating through his robes, hair in disarray, panting through pain and exhaustion alike. He was too weakened to transform, and his baser form—his simple Gerudo body, absent of Demise’s visibly corroding influence—lacked the same petrifying, untouchable presence. Link figured he should tell him so.
“You reek.”
Ganondorf’s glare was half-ruined by the tears rolling down his face; courtesy of some well-aimed dirt, Link thought smugly. “And you,” Ganondorf managed between breaths, “sound like a dying frog.”
Link barely had enough energy to muster up the indignation that deserved, but he managed. “A frog? That’s the worst you could come up with?” He scoffed, ignoring how much it stung to do so. “Were you even trying?”
“Croak, croak, croak,” Ganondorf griped, waving a hand back and forth. The Triforce of Power shimmered like a kaleidoscope against the back of his hand. “Annoying little wheezes.”
“Oh, forgive me. Some asshole punched me in the throat.”
“Only after another asshole pulled my hair!”
“So what?” Link croaked—ah, dammit, Ganondorf was right. What a miserable day.
“So, hair’s off-limits.”
“Off…” Link paused to stare. He blinked several times for good measure. Only a little blood managed to dribble into his eyes. “It was a fight! To the death!”
“Fated by the deities themselves,” Ganondorf agreed darkly.
“And you think hair is off-limits?”
“Well, yes.” Ganondorf sneered at Link as if the hero was particularly dense. “We’re not animals.”
“You literally are, you dumb pig,” Link groaned.
Ganondorf made some weird growling sound, then coughed. “Just you wait,” he grumbled. “As soon as I catch my breath, I’ll—”
“You’ll what?” Link mocked. “You’ll kill me? With what weapon? You couldn’t summon a speck of dust right now.”
Ganondorf curled his lip disdainfully. “As if you’re one to talk. You can’t even get up, can you?”
Link chose that moment to finally admit to himself that he’d been managing his half of the conversation while lying prone on the ground. He was sure the Master Sword was within grasp if he needed it. Probably. “I can move,” he answered loftily, only croaking a little, “whenever I want to.”
“Sure,” Ganondorf agreed.
“I can.”
“Like I said, sure.”
Link groaned again. Dirt stuck to his lips in a very unheroic way.
Seconds passed, then Ganondorf heaved another breath. It sounded more significant than the previous ones in some strange and foreboding way. He pushed off his knees with both hands and stood up straight. His spine popped immediately. “Damn the goddesses,” Ganondorf spat, bracing a clawed hand against the small of his back as he resumed his slouch. Link couldn’t help but nod in tired agreement. “And damn Demise!”
That sounded particularly vicious. Link nodded again for solidarity. “Is Demise the reason you’re so fucked up?”
“Yes,” Ganondorf hissed.
“Ah.” What was he supposed to say to that? Something meaningful, probably. “Sucks.”
“Indeed.”
Something wet fell on Link’s face. Then it happened again. Rain, he thought bitterly. Maybe he’d be lucky enough to drown. “I don’t suppose you’re dying? Spare me the trouble of having to finish this?”
“Unfortunately, no,” Ganondorf grumbled. “You?”
“Also unfortunately no.”
Ganondorf eyed him skeptically. “I thought you’d bleed more when I cut off your hand.”
Ah yeah, that. His right wrist really hurt. “To be honest, me too.” A wave of dizziness washed over Link, which he promptly ignored like he had the last four times. “How did you survive that light magic bomb?”
Ganondorf shook his head. “No fucking idea. Luck, perhaps. I felt my heart stop for a moment.”
“Really? Cool.”
Ganondorf shrugged.
“So… now what?” Link asked quietly, licking at the raindrops gathering on his upper lip. They tasted like dirt. “You gonna kill me?” Because in all honesty, he couldn’t get up. Trying left his pulse racing and his limbs trembling. He was pretty much useless.
“I should,” Ganondorf answered just as quietly.
When nothing else was said, Link grunted. “But…?”
“I’m tired.” Simple, honest, absolute.
“Yeah,” Link muttered. “Me too.”
With a pained little oof, Ganondorf sat down beside Link, crossing his legs at the ankles and keeping his weight off of his left hip. He fiddled with his many bracelets. Link struggled to read his expression. “Perhaps I’ll feel up to it in a minute,” the King of Evil finally said.
There was something awkward about that. Something sad. Link decided to do what he did best and make a nuisance of himself. “Did you have to sit so close? I wasn’t lying earlier. You stink. Does deodorant not apply to demon kings?”
“Shut up, worm.” Ganondorf flicked a pebble at him. Somehow, it landed right between Link’s eyes.
“Ow! Fuck you.”
“In your dreams.”
Link gagged, loudly. The effect was ruined when it started to rain in earnest. Before he could think of the best way to complain, Ganondorf threw out a hand, and tendrils of dark magic formed a barrier above them.
“Oh,” Link said lamely. “Guess you’re not out of juice after all.”
Ganondorf frowned up at the barrier. “It’ll last a minute if we’re lucky.”
“Then what?”
“Then we’ll get wet. Maybe you’ll be able to walk by then, assuming you don’t bleed out in the meantime.”
A pretty bold assumption, all things considered, but Link wasn’t going to say so. He’d take what he could get. “And then?” he pressed.
Ganondorf clearly held back the first answer that came to mind. He pursed his lips before saying, “Your choice. I got us this far.”
Link couldn’t help it—he laughed. It sounded pretty terrible. “Yeah,” he wheezed after several seconds. “Yeah, I guess so. Okay.”
Ganondorf shook his head in apparent resignation. The barrier began to flicker.

George Weasley — 5th December
Tumblr media
Summary:  You read him a poem as he laid on your chest, loving the sound of your voice.
Words: 1,870 words
Warnings: Major Fluff, I Blushed So Hard so You Shall Too, George Weasley Supremacy 2.0, Makes You Wish You Can Shift Sooner So You Could Have This Moment With Him, So Floofy It Hurts Physically
Disclaimer: S i g h. I am just so in love with this man. The way I blushed so hard through this entire thing is obvious enough I will never love someone as much as I love this 6′3 ginger dork. Ooh, also the poem is mine, I wrote it thinking of George fdhfhjks I’m actually so so nervous to show you guys my poem so I really hope you enjoy it!
Tumblr media
“Hey, flower,” George greeted you as soon as he walked in your dorm, seeing you leaning against your headboard, scribbling onto your notebook. He hadn’t seen you at all today, and your friends had told him you had called in sick, so right after dinner, he snuck some leftover food and went straight to your dorm.
“Hello, mysterious handsome man,” You teased and laughed at him narrowing his eyes playfully at you. “How’s your fever, love?” He asked as he walked closer, giving you a sweet forehead kiss. You closed your eyes at the feeling of his lips on your skin, sighing in content, “Much better since Madam Pomfrey gave me some potions to drink. They were ghastly, to be honest.”
George chuckled at your fake vomiting, slightly relieved that you were still his same, silly flower.
He sat at the edge of the bed, right beside you as he held a tray of leftover food he had picked out, there were cauldron cakes, chocolate frogs, gummy worms, and a bowl of mushroom soup, which when you saw the thick creamy food you gasped, “They had mushroom soup today?!”
The next couple of hours were spent with you and him eating together in bed, you listening to his day today, Fred and Lee had tried to convince him to put some explosive powder into your mushroom soup earlier—you gasped in mock offense—luckily he said no, not wanting to be accidentally murdered in his bed at midnight—you nodded in agreement, he laughed—and the two friends wished you well.
You instantly snatched the bowl and groaned at the taste of the soup on your tongue. George chuckled, “Yeah, reckon you would like a bowl of ‘em in bed.”
“You’re kidding? I would love to have it in bed, blimey you’re the best boyfriend ever, thank you, Georgie.” You gushed as you gave him a big wet kiss on his cheek, which he laughed loudly at.
And you told him about yours, about how ghastly this morning was that you had woken up in cold sweats and practically had to crawl out of your bed to call your friend for help—he was frowning so hard—and Madam Pomfrey had visited you twice during the day, giving you some potions and brought you some food to regain your energy—George planned to surprise Madam Pomfrey with sweets the next day as a thank you—and you spent the rest of your day writing.
“What were you writing? Another poem?” George asked, he had known you had a passion for writing ever since you were little. It doesn’t matter what kind of writing it was, you do everything. From poetry to short stories to even some of Hogwart’s news articles, you love everything there is about writing. Even songwriting, George had to close his mouth manually when he found out you could actually compose songs and sing, he thought he’s had enough reasons to love you as it is when turns out there are more and he’s more pleased to discover all of them over time with you.
“You’re right, actually. I missed you a lot today, so I wrote it for you,” You said with a small smile, eyes tearing away from George shyly.
George had sworn his heart stopped beating for like 5 seconds.
“For me? Really?” He whispered in awe, his smile widening at your blushing cheeks. George was absolutely sure his face was the same hue as his hair at the moment, but his heart was leaping in too much joy to actually care. Seeing you before him trying to hide your heavy blush and trying so hard to contain a big grin with your teeth on your bottom lip had his whole knees weak. You looked mad adorable and all George wished to do at the moment was shrink you into pocket-sized and keep you in his pocket forever.
“I-I mean, no one has written me poems before…” He trailed off, his hand brushing the nape of his neck, feeling extremely giddy and extremely happy. He was usually the one who made you this way, blushing and stuttering, but when it’s your turn, he almost died out of heart attack each time.
“Well, you’re going to be surprised when I tell you that every love poem I’ve written, I thought of you.” You said, rolling your eyes playfully at his widened eyes, flushed cheeks, with a giddy grin on his lips.
There it is; the heart attack.
“Well I would love to hear you read it for me—excuse me, madam, coming through,” He said, shuffling on the bed closer to you, laying between your legs, his back on your chest and his head on your shoulder perfectly; as if your body was molded solely to hold him this way, and George wouldn’t agree more. You laughed as he finally leaned onto you, sighing in content as he did. You pulled the blanket so it could drape the both of you perfectly, and you leaned your cheek to his forehead.
“Alright, but warning, it’s very very mushy,” You warned, and he smiled a bit wider, “All the more reasons to read it then.”
You reached the leather brown notebook at your other side, flipping the page easily to where you want it due to the lilac feather quill resting between the tea-colored pages, acting as a bookmark.
Your arm beside George rested on his head, massaging his scalp gently as he liked it. George hummed in content as he leaned onto your neck, feeling very comfortable. The warmth from your body behind him and the heavy blanket draped across you both felt so comfortable that he didn’t want to move, ever.
“This is the first poem, I call it 5th December,” You said, and George opened his eyes, “Why 5th December? Isn’t that like, 10 days ago?” You chuckled, “Yeah, I first wrote it then, but I finished it today.” George hummed in understanding, “Go on then.”
“I’m not very good at reciting poems, so excuse me if it doesn’t sound right.” You said and George dramatically sighed, “You’re stalling, love. And even if you say it most horribly, I’ll still love it because you wrote it.”
“Aww, Georgie,” You cooed, kissing his forehead causing him to crack a smile. “Okay, okay, here it goes.” You said and George had his eyes on the notebook you’re holding, scribbles of black lines and paragraphs filled every page.
“Awh, darling.” George cooed and kissed your cheek, causing you to stifle a giggle before going back into reciting mode.
“If you ask what my birthday wish was,
I simply could not tell you because
I don’t wanna say it’s wanting you with me laying down the grass
Together at night with the company of the stars.”
As you read the words, George found himself getting flutters in his stomach. He was so focused now, wanting to hear more of your voice and this poem combined, because to him, there is no such beauty that could compare. All that matters to him as of that moment, was you.
“If you ask what my falling star wish was
I shall simply shake my head just because
It’s hard to describe wanting you by my side each and every night
Taking your hand in mine and waking up with you next in line.”
You looked at him, and George was already looking at you with full adoration. He looked so mesmerized and amazed, you smiled at this; how adorable. You closed the notebook, you had already memorized every line as you had read it over and over for the past day, getting butterflies in your heart as you thought of George every time. With your eyes on him, your soft voice recited the poem again.
“If you ask what my new year’s wishlist was
I would simply put my lips together because
I couldn’t tell you it’s wanting to travel the world with you
And just try together everything new and spend time with you.”
George was in a trance. The beautiful words you crafted together were meant just for him. The poem you shared with him was because of you thinking about him. At that moment, George had thought of something he never would’ve thought during his past relationships.
“If you ask what my clover wish was
I would just laugh and tell you no because
I wish to touch every inch of you every second with all my will
For your lips against mine, I shall need no happy pill.”
He wanted to spend his entire life with you, and no one else but you. He wanted to live with you, to be with you during thick and thin. Because… Because he loves you.
As you finished it, you gave him a gentle smile. There was a silent moment from the both of you, the only sound was the raindrops outside the window, the rhythmic splatter of water was therapeutic, to say the least.
“And if you ask, why won’t you tell me anything of you wished for
Let’s talk about it over a nice cup of tea just brewed
I shall say with the love in my eyes a secret till forevermore
That if I simply say it to you, then none of them would come true.”
You took your time to look at George’s face. Sometimes you had marveled at the fact that you could get this ridiculously beautiful man to be yours, to like you for who you are, to accept each and every quirk you have without any feeling of annoyance or disgust by them.
This ridiculously beautiful man, with lush and soft ginger hair, light colored long eyelashes, the stunning color of brown for eyes, and peach-hued freckles decorating his face like footsteps of an elegant ballerina on stage.
“I am so lucky,” Was all George could breathe out as he leaned upwards, engulfing you into a passionate kiss. George loved every single moment when he kisses you, your lips are nicotine at its best, and he would drop everything to be an addict, an slave for you; for thousands of eternities if he could.
His hands had found the back of your neck, pulling it closer to his direction, deepening the kiss. You closed your eyes to relish the moment, your hands already found their place at each side of his jawline, hungrily pulling him closer to you.
When you pulled away, your lips were ghosting each other, his hard breaths hit your swollen lips softly. “What exactly are you lucky for, Weasley?” You breathed out, still panting softly, the smile on your lips grew as it mirrored the lovestruck smile on his lips.
He kissed your nose, and the rosy cheeks returned, “For you, for the poem, for you reading the poem, for you writing the poem while thinking of me,” You giggled and he joined with a chuckle, a soft smile on his face, “For everything. I love you, my flower.”
“I love you too,” you bit your lips, trying your hardest to contain a smile, “If this is what I get after reading you a poem then do you wanna hear the second one?” George laughed loudly; happy and content just being there with you.

23/06/2021-The cottage, the Dingle and Newborough Forest again
After some down time in the cottage this morning looking after Missy, whilst my Mum and her husband did the Puffin Island trip we did yesterday - where I enjoyed hearing Goldfinch and Song Thrush and seeing a lovely Rabbit very closely as well as moth and crane fly in the cottage and garden and reflected on the incredible and packed few days we’ve had so far, as well as some very different views with the mountains of Snowdonia obscured and light rain falling - we had a look at the Dingle. I took the first three pictures in this photoset of the moth just before bed in the early hours, a view and a Rabbit.
The Dingle was a great local nature reserve and it was really good to speak to more brilliant people today, maybe more local than recent days whilst it’s obviously been fantastic to speak to so many varied and diverse people all week. It was a lovely walk on a boardwalk and path through bits of woodland and rural landscape with streams and a pond babbling along nicely. It was beautiful. I took the fourth, seventh and eighth pictures in this photoset of views here today. I liked seeing a lot of flowers again, lots of red campion, cow parsley, buttercup, Welsh poppy fittingly for being in Wales I took the fifth picture in this photoset of this, valerian, white clover, wood avens, yellow iris as it was quite a riverine habitat these covering the landscape nicely in places and some smashing foxgloves again with nice scenes of one with raindrops on and one tangled with something else I do like seeing raindrops on flowers  a great wild moment to observe which I used for #30DaysWild today on Twitter a species that obviously we see a lot of at home in the New Forest and similar that we’ve never been away somewhere before and just seen absolutely everywhere as we have done so this has been really special.
In this area that looked much like somewhere might at home I forgot myself for a minute when seeing a squirrel skulk about in trees and I said oh there’s a squirrel. Of course, it could only be one squirrel here the Red Squirrel that we saw so brilliantly to start the holiday on Saturday at Newborough Forest as opposed to the grey that it could only be at home, which if here the Red Squirrels would not be. I relished a chance to have a second bite of the cherry with this one of my favourite mammals today and really enjoyed seeing this red furred icon of a species walk to just above us in the trees in a known feeding area for them. I got the sixth picture in this photoset of this beautiful mammal. It was exceptional to see one again. After the joy of this walking out into a clearing we got a great view of a smashing male Blackcap, the first I have seen for a while.
We then decided to have another look at Newborough Forest, it was a place I had become very fond of already with the magic of the Red Squirrel encounter and more on the pleasant walk on the first night. I took the ninth picture in this photoset of trees here. Like Saturday night here it was great to see a minute frog, Chaffinches and flowers/plants including buttercup, herb-Robert, red campion as shown in the tenth and final picture I took today in this photoset everywhere and broom the two looking beautiful together again as they did on Saturday with bird’s-foot trefoil a nice surprise too. It was great to see a Robin as well.
And on the way it was lovely to see an Oystercatcher and Little Egret around an estuary area the later an extraordinary 16th of my 31 favourite birds I have seen this week this has been a fun list to build up and I’ve felt so lucky seeing them all, Anglesey and wider North Wales is the perfect base with a mix of habitats to see a lot of my favourites. This evening both male and female Blackbird visited the cottage garding and it was exciting to see them and Rabbit together at certain points. Another very enjoyable day away.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: (The Dingle) One of my favourite mammals the Red Squirrel, Robin, Wren well, Blackbird, Blackcap, lots of Black-headed Gulls, noisy Herring Gull and Woodpigeon well. (Newborough Forest) Robin, Chaffinch and frog.

Yamata-No-Orochi: (Part 4) Erii
ITT: The Mic Drop Heard Round the World.
The sun woke you. Bright light shone through the windows, forming a halo around the curtains and projecting the shape of raindrops from the window onto the carpet. Mingfei had left shortly before you fell asleep of exhaustion and grief.
You’d fought hard and rebelled against the world, but this last rebellion had taken you too far. Z raised, saved, and safeguarded you. But you refused to play his love game, and that was all it took to discard you. Caesar had been at your side, encouraging you to live all this time. But now that the clouds had gathered, and the darkness of the world surrounded you, he realized that, like Chance, life was not in the cards for you. And Chu Zihang? Well, he always was a sword at your throat.
Once again the world was laughing, mocking you with its silent game of keep away. Love? Syke! Happiness? Syke! Companionship? Syke!
You hated this world. Mingfei went to Erii’s room with the Desert Eagle. What was stopping you from planting your mind in the ground and tilting Tokyo into a rift in the Earth, like it was the undersea Takamagahara? To watch its towers topple, and its buildings burn would be a fitting end to a Godzilla movie.
The hotel phone rang, insanely loud. You reached over and picked it up. “Pizza Hut,” you mumble.
Lu Mingfei stammered for a moment. Then he laughed. “Hey. You, me, Erii road trip. Right now. I left some clothes for you.”
His voice over the phone, it sounded like Z’s. You are silent, mind completely inert, spirit aching. “Sure whatever.” You hang up.
You shower and pull a comb through your hair three times, leaving it to fall over your shoulders. You don't bother with jewelry or make up. He left you a pair of skin tight jeans and a shirt that said Wild Thing across the front. White ankle socks and blue low rise canvas sneakers go over your feet.
The phone rings again. Mingfei sounded breathless. “Come now! We have to go!”
You hang up the phone and dash outside. Mingfei is waiting for you in a cherry red porsche. Erii waves with bright enthusiasm from the passenger side as he gets out and folds the seat down so you can get in the back. “Erii this is my friend, MC, She’s sick like you.”
You startle. Mingfei just went out and said it. You hold out your hand and she takes it, examining your fingers with her dark red eyes. You were lighter skinned, but this girl was near transparent. She scribbled on a notepad. “Nice to meet you. You are very pretty.”
“Guys buckle up!”
Your seatbelt had just clicked when Mingfei down shifted and floored it. The engine let out a mighty growl and the car took off like a rocket down the street. But Mingfei was relaxed, with an impish, ‘catch me if you can’ sort of look. Something in your chest stirred awake.
Erii held up her notebook. “Sakura is the best, right?”
Her smile was so sly, not something you expected to see. “Oh yeah, he's awesome!”
Her nod was sassy, like, Damn Straight.
You look at him again. He was smiling like he was angry. He was acting recklessly. The buildings were a blur outside the windows. The car rumbled like a beast underneath you as the accelerator didn't let up. You weave through traffic like lightning and soon the police are tailing you with flashing lights.
If you thought you were going fast before you were mistaken. The car dug deeper, and it felt like you floated over the road. The police car faded into the distance, unable to keep up.
He pulls into a service station and pays the attendant way too much cash. “Where are we going?” You ask.
“It's a surprise!”
“Does MC like gum?” Erii held out a piece and you helped yourself.
You lean forward. Erii was covered head to toe in clothing, despite the good weather.
“MC said that Erii is not stupid, that Erii is smart. MC was right, you knew a lot about yourself. But MC was sad so I wanted to take her too.” Lu Mingfei was saying. “Because she cares for Erii and understands her.”
Erii looks at you for a moment. Then she wrote in her notepad, “Cheer up. Sakura is very lucky. Thank you for caring about me.”
Her expression was so earnest and happy. Did she really understand herself? You hold out your hands for the notebook and pen. You write, “I'm too sick so my friends are scared of me.”
She takes one look at the notepad and her eyes widen. She snatches it back and writes, “Erii is not scared, Erii will be your friend.”
“Please be my friend.” You say softly.
Erii reaches out and seizes your arm. Her face is serious and she nods. When you stop at the supermarket, she drags you along, purchasing snacks and a gigantic stuffed teddy bear. Erii was not interested in herself. She wanted to cheer you up! She understood beyond words the lifelong loneliness, the constant rejection, and growing up in a world that feared you. She forcefully shoves the teddy bear into your hands. And pulls you along. It's so big you can't see around it.
Her image blurs with that of Renata. If Renata had a chance to grow up, she would be this bold.
The bear is so tall it folds against the low ceiling of the porsche. You squeeze in next to it.
“MC is from Siberia. Where she is from, the sun doesn't set in Summer. And in Winter, it doesn't rise and lights dance in the sky.” Mingfei says as you take off again.
Erii swivels in a full body, “What?!” expression and you laugh. “It is true. It's exactly like that.”
“That is AWESOME!” She turns the notepad to you and then writes, “I want to visit your home!”
You recall your promise to Caesar to go dog sledding and feel a pang of regret. But your mind has already replaced Caesar on the dogsled and put Erii there. “Let’s go dogsledding!”
She looks confused.
“Here give me your notebook.” You draw a sketch of a dog sled pulled by a team of panting dogs.
If Erii’s eyes got any bigger they would fill her face. She wrote, “IS THERE SANTA IS HE THERE”
“I… no Santas not there, but we can pretend to be Santa.”
“MC is awesome!”
Before dusk, Lu Mingfei and you two ladies arrived in the town at the southwest end of Shikoku, which is more than four hundred kilometers from Tokyo. The Porsche sports car ran for a full four hours. The whole time Erii peppered you with questions about life in Siberia while Mingfei drove. She had the impression of a magical frostland full of sky and sea. Her sparkling impression was free of brutal reality. For four hours you spoke only of the beauty and wonder of the north. Erii’s notebook is filled with sketches of white quail, snow geese, cute arctic foxes, bears, seals, and whales.
The open-air parking lot was empty. Lu Mingfei found a parking space to park the car, and opened the door to hear the tide. You could not see the sea. A large hill stood between you and the ocean. The waves sounded like reverberating between the sky and the earth.
"The sea?" Erii wrote to Lu Mingfei, with excitement in her eyes.
Lu Mingfei nodded his head as an answer.
Ah the ocean… maybe four hours ago you might have been upset to meet up with the water. Now you just laugh.
Erii looks at you curiously.
“Did you know I got to ride dolphins?”
Erii practically staggers.
“If you're lost in the ocean, sometimes dolphins will rescue you.” You hook her arm in yours. “They're big and strong and won't let you drown.”
“MC knows so much.”
“Erii knows a lot about Erii’s world. I know a lot about mine.”
Erii nods and smiles.
Lu Mingfei pulled out the compass, opened the long-prepared map, and took you to the town not far away. The sign in front of the town reads Umezuji-cho. At this time of the year, the streets of Tokyo must be bustling with people, but in this small seaside town, there are no people on the streets, only a group of elementary school students in school uniforms passing by.
Mingfei seemed to be in a rush, but Erii dallied with you, asking questions and marveling at the tofu shop, or the batik store. More than once, Mingfei had to come back and usher you forward. He clearly had some sort of plan in mind.
You find out that he hurried was so you could catch the last mountain tram, which was built next to the town's shrine and had a 45-degree angle track that made a staccato sound as you climbed.
On both sides of the track there are dense trees. These trees cover the track like thick clouds, and it is as if you are walking through a tunnel of ever-changing colors, a tunnel made purely of foliage and flowers.
Both you and Erii are stunned with wonder. You did not have such dense forests like this growing up. The air is full of birdsong and frogs and early season cicadas. You feel someone take your hand. Erii points to your face. A bright tear shone there like a pearl. You didn't know you had shed it.
"Sakura is not Japanese, right? How do you know such a beautiful place?" Erii wrote in her little notebook.
"I saw a drama made in Japan. This is a very famous scene from that drama. I saw that drama a long time ago."
"What was the name of that TV series?"
"Tokyo Love Story." Lu Mingfei wrote one stroke at a time.
"I liked that Japanese drama so much that I searched the Internet for all kinds of information about Ehime Prefecture, and finally learned that the ending scene was filmed in Umezuji Town, and that the school and the separate stations in the drama were real. I had always dreamed of traveling to Umetsuji-cho and had done a lot of homework.”
You and Mingfei did not really know each other. You did not think he was this level of a romantic so you didn’t understand why Caesar would want to pair you two. Now it made a lot more sense.
Lu Mingfei took out a handkerchief and blindfolded Erii: "You will see a beautiful view when you untie the handkerchief later."
When he handed one to you, your jaw drops. “I can’t believe you.”
He doesn’t say anything, just ties your eyes. You feel his hand close around yours. You can’t see Erii’s expression. “Erii, I’m so excited. This is fantastic!”
You’re smiling, you can’t stop. The memories of the events of the days before roared like angry hordes of monsters in your mind, but Mingfei and Erii have shut the gates on them. His warm hand in yours, the rhythm of the sun's rays between the trees, the crunch of your footfalls on the trail, the constant sound of birds. It was all so soothing.
You walk the decades old mountain mining path, a road with uneven stone patchwork. At the end of the road is a long closed mine. In order to commemorate the mine that raised the town, the residents of Umezuji Town donated money to build a wooden temple-style building over the entrance and exit of the mine. Each rafter is hung with carp flags for prayers, and various porcelain dolls are placed under the eaves. This is a local custom. If the town's family gave birth to a boy, they would come here to hang a carp flag, and if it is a girl will put a porcelain doll.
“It's exactly the same as the Internet says." Lu Mingfei said.
The tracks of the mine car had long been rusted, and weeds grew among the sleepers. You followed the track to the edge of the cliff, and Lu Mingfei helped you to climb a rock that protruded from the cliff.
He pressed his hands on you and Erii’s shoulders and said, "Now you can take off the blindfold."
You untied your handkerchief.
The sunset blooms full in your vision. The huge sun disc had touched the sea. Ten of millions of tons of seawater slowly swirled beneath your feet. The tide broke into white splashes under the black cliffs. The wind blew endless hectares of forest. The evening woods also look like the sea from a distance, a pale red sea, with thousands of treetops swaying with the wind, forming cascading waves.
Small towns are distributed along the winding coastline, Lu Mingfei names of them one by one -- below the cliff is the town of Umezuji, a little farther away is the town of Yamamae, Tsukishita Castle Town and Matsuron Town, and further is beyond his knowledge.
The town's small school was already empty, and the silent playground was empty.
The Ferris wheel spins slowly but does not carry passengers. The Ferris wheel in Umezuji Town is only a miniature version, but it is magnified in the sunset, its huge shadow cast on the undulating sea of trees.
On the track facing the sea, the yellow slow train rumbled through the small unoccupied station, which was enclosed by white railings with the signs "Umetsuji X" and "Tokyo X”. You wonder how long it had to wait for a nostalgic and romantic fan like Lu Mingfei. Music starts playing and you can't help but laugh in disbelief.
Lu Mingfei had pressed play on the theme song of Tokyo Love Story. His phone was the latest and the speaker was good. You couldn't believe it. This nerdy little parrot boy and scared raccoon had somehow managed to comfort you completely. Outside the shadows of Caesar and Chu Zihang, he shined bright. Maybe being on a boat with him would be fun.
Erii held up her notebook. “The world is gentle.”
You look at her, expressionless. She was right. The world in its natural state was quiet and peaceful. You’d fallen asleep in violence and awakened in violence and pain. You didn't get to experience the romantic world like this very much. In your mind, you imagine Renata in her patchwork coat, sitting next to you. In your ears, she whispers.
You open your mouth, “Make a wish!”
Mingfei turns to you in surprise but Erii follows along, pressing her palms together. You pray.
Renata. I am coming soon. Sorry it took so long.
You sat under the roof of the mine. Erii kept writing questions. Lu Mingfei answered one by one. This girl seems to have saved up a belly of questions, and now they all came out. Mostly they referenced Anime and Manga you have never heard of. That was Erii’s world, a world of cartoon fantasy. He confirmed or denied that reality, shaping and creating the world anew as you watched her listen intently. Lu Mingfei had taken to heart your words and was upfront and simple, not lying or trying to say things she wanted to hear. You nod in approval, your eyes serious.
The sun gradually sank below the surface of the sea, the last afterglow scattered on the water. Half of the sun and its reflection form a complete circle.
"So this is what the outside world looks like." Erii wrote to Lu Mingfei to see.
"Yeah, that's what it's like, no Britannia Kingdom and no Celestial Organization… disappointed?" Lu Mingfei asked.
"No, not disappointed, like this kind of world, this kind of world is very gentle." Erii used the word gentle once again. You repeated the word in your mind. Gentle. It echoes there. As if without the constant threat of death and adrenaline, there was just empty space.
"I really like this world." As the sun is about to disappear, Erii wrote to Lu Mingfei. "But the world doesn't like me." Erii went on to write.
You stand up and move to the other side of her. You scoot as close as you can and rest your head on her shoulder. She hugged the huge bear and lowered her eyes like a cat that had done something wrong.
"I'll be a problem for everyone and I've been a problem for Sakura." Erii wrote again.
"I was too willful. So I ran away from home."
"I should have gone back a long time ago but it's still a pleasure."
"It's beautiful here, I should have known I should have come here on the first day. Thank you Sakura, MC, thank you.”
You lower your hand over hers as she’s writing.
"No."
Erii froze for a moment.
 "No." Lu Mingfei repeated.
Lu Mingfei cocked his head to look at her with a rare serious look: "Don't think you can know what the world is like by coming out to see it. I'm still confused after living in this world for more than twenty years. You've only run out for a few days and you think you understand?"
His eyes look at you too and you’re just as shaken as Erii. But he is right! You never set foot outside the Port of Black Swan and that was 20 years ago. You saw the whole world through that tiny lens and haughtily walked around like you owned the place. You judged others through that same view as well.
"How big the world is depends on how many people you know, and for every person you know, the world gets a little bigger for you. There are many cities in this world. There are Tokyo, Paris, Cairo, London, Istanbul... but many of them are just names to you, you haven't been there and there are no people there you want to visit, so they don't really belong to your world. There are many, many more people in this world, but you don't know them, and they don't belong in your world. There are also lots of good food and fun and nice things in this world, but the world that really belongs to you is actually very small, just the places you've been and eaten and seen the sunset and the friends who will care if you live or die."
"Whether the world likes you or not only depends on whether your friends like you or not. Everyone has a few really good friends. They like you, therefore, the world likes you."
The world… was not Tokyo, or Cassell or Hydra… The world was Renata, Caesar, Chu Zihang, Lu Mingfei, and now Erii. You turn your head back to Tokyo, unseen in the distance. How could you leave…?
“What is a good friend?" Erii wrote in her little notebook.
"It's the kind of friend that's so crazy about that he'll believe in you no matter what, and he'll be with you no matter what.” Lu Mingfei growled low. "If the world really doesn't like you, then the world is my enemy."
The moment these cold and arrogant words came out of his mouth, you seemed to hear a familiar cold laugh coming from behind you. The demon of the sad world sneering with all its mockery.
Together, you and Mingfei both jerked back, but behind you were only cherry blossoms mixed with fallen leaves swirling in a breeze, and there was no sign of Z. Lu Mingfei stared at you with wide eyes and you stared right back. His mouth opened. “MC. You… heard…?”
    "Wanted: a good friend."
He turned back to Erii waiting for him with a small book up.
"I am your good friend, and you will have more good friends in the future." You say.
"But as long as we are your good friends, how can we not like you?" He said softly.
She slowly crawled towards Lu Mingfei like a kitten, vigilantly figuring out his look. Lu Mingfei looks petrified and you cover your mouth with one hand while silently cheering, “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
What did he expect? Even your heart was moving and you don’t even like him! Lu Mingfei is sitting here putting Kazama level moves on this girl and now that her arms are around him and her head is on his chest, he looks two seconds away from shitting himself. You ball your fist against your lips and swallow your laughter.
Clouds gathered in the distance and the sun had set, It was time to go. You would have to get up bright and early tomorrow to get on the boat to China. Your heart was relaxed again about Caesar’s decision. After all, he was just doing his best. If you died, you would go to rest. Caesar would be tormented for the rest of his days. He wasn't sending you on the boat to die. He wanted you to live. You still believed the omniscient Z. Leaving Tokyo was a death sentence. But you also believed Caesar had his own parallel script.
It was raining by the time the train came. You stand shoulder to shoulder on the platform. “Call me to wake me up tomorrow.” You say.
Mingfei lowers his head and laughs.
“Oh you’re planning to oversleep? Once again I have to be the mature one.” You roll your eyes.
The train splashes up to the platform and you make sure Erii has her ticket. She sits next to the window and stares outside. Much to your surprise, Mingfei sits you next to her. He gives you a fond smile and passes you a note.
"Dear passengers, this train terminates in Matsuyama City. We are now about to leave Umezuji-cho station. The train is about to close......" A sweet female voice echoed in the carriage.
The doors of the train close.
You open the note in your hand. The words make you squint.
You have to live.
You and Erii gasp at the same time. Mingfei is not on the train. The doors have closed. And he is not on the train!
You leap from your seat and pound on the glass door in front of the smiling Mingfei. “Where am I supposed to go?” You will miss the boat. You won’t go to China.
Your hands slowly slide from the glass. Erii is pressing her notebook urgently against it.
Lu Mingfei tapped on the window, "Someone will pick Erii up when you get to Matsuyama City. MC, find Ruri Kazama.”
"Won't Sakura take me back to Tokyo?" Eriki took the small book and showed it to Lu Mingfei.
"Your family won't like me." Lu Mingfei said.
Erii hugged the furry teddy bear and lowered her head, her long hair like a colored cloak that enveloped both her and the bear.
    "Sayonara"  said Lu Mingfei.
Erii nodded, finally realizing that this was their parting. The train ride to Tokyo will take several hours, but Lu Mingfei will not accompany her.
Lu Mingfei's face was stern and he didn't say anything more. There was nothing more to say. This was the parting, his carefully designed parting. He NEVER agreed to the boat. He NEVER agreed to kill you. He had carefully pulled the wool over Caesar’s eyes and convinced you that he was going to dump you on the boat. You grinned and shook your head. But the train began to move before you could even think of a comeback.

19. Sonic the Hedgehog #15
Tumblr media
Previous / Table of Contents / Next
Rockin' the 'Bot!
Writer: Angelo DeCesare Pencils: Dave Manak Colors: Barry Grossman
Sonic is pulling another one of his crazy stunts, outrunning lightning and dashing between raindrops in a storm, when he takes a detour to rescue a frog from a mudslide. As thanks, this apparently-magical frog gives him three colorful stones, each of which will give him a magic power for a few seconds if he uses them. Sonic, not believing this is possible, pawns them off on Tails as generic lucky rocks and forgets about them for a little while.
Tumblr media
He ends up remembering them pretty quickly, though, when the next day Robotnik attacks everyone while they're out and about. However, due to his not paying enough attention when the frog explained the powers to him, he has no idea which one does which, and ends up having to guess. This results in some pretty wacky shenanigans.
Tumblr media
He chooses wrong pretty much every time, resulting in his friends getting caught while he's just kind of flailing around not knowing what he's doing, until he's left with only the strength stone. And thus, he constructs the greatest flyswatter known to Mobiankind in order to get them back.
Tumblr media
After all is said and done, he tries to find the frog again to get more powers, but there's a lot of frogs on Mobius. Good luck with that, bro!
What's the Big Idea?
Writers: Mike Kanterovich and Ken Penders Pencils: Art Mawhinney Colors: Barry Grossman
Rotor has locked himself in his lab, and absolutely no one has any idea what's going on in there. Could it be yet another invention that will blow up in his face? Might it be something amazing that will make everyone's lives better? Perhaps, something that will tell us why Tails doesn't understand science seriously I can't get over how he's just a dumb kid in this canon originally?
Tumblr media
Everyone takes turns arguing for a while over what kind of cool thing they think he's inventing, before they finally admit they have no freaking clue what he might be up to. All that's left to do is wait! And finally, when he emerges, he reveals he has just invented the…
Tumblr media
..th-thermos? He just reinvented the thermos? That's it? What's with the trademark symbol there? Did they… did they get a brand deal or something?
Animal Magnetism
Writer: Angelo DeCesare Pencils: Art Mawhinney Colors: Barry Grossman
Robotnik's latest plan finally has him focusing on Bunnie herself - specifically, her robotic half. Honestly, in these early issues he seems totally unaware that it was one of his own roboticizers that caused her to be the way she is, and has thus far remained basically unaware (besides the last issue) of her existence, but now he's planning to use her to capture the rest of the Freedom Fighters. With a magnet!
Tumblr media
Sonic, of course, runs to the rescue, and by grabbing a flying piece of metal tricks Robotnik into turning toward him in the hopes of capturing him instead. Unfortunately for Robotnik, the range of the magnet is apparently just infinite and now all the metal from Robotropolis is flying towards him instead. With Robotnik buried under all the loose junk from his own city, Sonic and Bunnie are free to walk away with one last backward sass, and back at Knothole Rotor protects Bunnie's robotic parts with a solution that repels magnets. Another happy ending!

Tumblr media
Autumn was your favorite season out of the four. You loved the changing of the colors, cool weather, pumpkin spice flavor, and everything else that came with the season. Ever since you were a kid, you loved being outside, always doing some sort of Fall activity.
However, as time went on and as you got older, those days were spent more on killing monsters instead of enjoying what nature had to offer. You loved hunting and saving lives, but you felt your life slipping away the more you hunted.
You just needed a break and you finally found your opportunity to do so when you and the Winchesters went on a wendigo hunt in the woods. You got yourself a cabin to rent for the time being to make it easier than staying at a motel that was farther from the caves you suspected the wendigos to be in.
The hunt was a little hard but you didn’t mind it at all. You actually got done a little earlier than planned which was good because you got to keep the cabin for a couple of more days. You knew there wasn’t a hunt and the cabin was nice so you figured why not staying the whole time you had it, going on another hunt when the time was up.
Both brothers agreed and you spent the first day relaxing, just enjoying each other’s company. You missed these days when you didn’t have a hunt, when you didn’t have a monster’s blood all over you. This day was just a chill day, ending on a peaceful note.
You and Dean were together, which made this miserable life more tolerable. You loved Sam and you thought of him as your older brother but Dean was a different story. You and he clicked, hitting it off the moment you met each other.
Before you knew it, you were his girlfriend, taking him off the market for good. You and the Winchesters got along so well, you knew that you and Dean would be together a long time, if not forever. You were right. You’ve been with Dean for about 2 years but it feels like it has been longer.
You can actually see yourself having a future with him, which was hard to do in this life. You saw yourself having kids, raising them in the Bunker, with an awesome uncle and an even more awesome father. You saw yourself marrying him but all that you could do right now, was wait.
You didn’t mind waiting for him to ask you. You were happy where you were and you didn’t want that changing right now.
On the second and last free day, you got up extra early in the morning to so you could explore the woods without the brothers worrying about you. You left a note, just in case Sam woke up from habit and wondered where you were.
You left the cabin, pulling your jacket closer to you since it was a bit chilly. You looked at the sky to see dark cloud and knew it would rain but you hoped that it wouldn’t rain while you were still out here. It wasn’t like you minded but you didn’t want to get a cold or anything.
You walked along a path, coming to a clearly. It had rained earlier in the week and so, there was a light stream running through the rocks. You grinned, seeing how peaceful and quiet it was out here. You jumped from rock to rock, finding a big enough rock to settle down on.
You grinned and sat down, pulling your knees up to your chest, watching the water flow down the stream, parting ways when it hit the rock you were sitting on. You rested your head on your knees, thinking of when you were a child and your dad used to take you camping.
You two would always try and find streams like these since it was peaceful, watching frogs or butterflies come by to check out the water. If you were lucky, you would see a deer or another animal drinking from the water.
“You okay?” You looked up to see Dean there in his jeans and a jacket, his hands shoved inside the pockets. You smiled, figuring he would find you sooner rather than later. He slept better when you were with him so he must have noticed you weren’t there next to him.
“Yeah, just thinking.” You said, moving over to make room for Dean. He jumped the same rocks you did, settling on the one you were on. He smiled and sat close to you, looking at the stream.
“You know how my dad would take me camping sometimes?” You said.
“Yeah.”
“We would always find ourselves a stream and if we were lucky, we would see a deer drinking from it. Man, hunting is so shitty but then I come out here and it’s so peaceful. The world could be a beautiful thing if we stop doing shitty things to it.” You said, looking at him with a smile.
“Yeah, I know. We should get inside, though. It might rain.” Dean said, looking up at the sky. Thunder rolled around but you made no move to get up.
“Let it. I like seeing the rain hit the water. The raindrops make perfect circles and it sounds so nice to hear it.” You said. Just as Dean predicted, it started to rain but it was a light rain and you were grateful for that. That meant you could stay outside a little longer before you could catch a cold.
“It is peaceful.” He said, moving closer to you.
“Yeah. It’s perfect.” You said with a smile, closing your eyes and just listening to the rain.
“You know what would make it even more perfect?” He asked.
“What is that?” You asked, opening your eyes and looking at him. You gasped and looked at the beautiful yet simple ring in the box he held.
“Will you marry me?”

For my own reference. I want to cry over how many I have near-finished but there last piece of a pavilion drop. Oh well. Only listing sets in the gallery because I’d be here all day putting in non-gallery suits.

First Draft: Comments Welcome
                                           But Love Will Remain
Harold was a lucky man to have a caretaker that allowed him to garden.
He cherished every opportunity, as the rich scent of the earth was often a trigger for rare glimpses of the memories of his youth. Whether it was dark with moisture and clung to his fingers in feathered clumps after heavy rain or parched to the point deep cracks webbed across its crusted surface and left his fingertips coated with musty fine silt, every time Harold would shut his eyes a new image would surface.
Within his mind, he would recall memories with varying degrees of clarity, but no matter the quality he considered each a gift. However, like any person, he allowed himself a few favorites.
Grainy, smudged footage of his mother guiding pudgy inexperienced hands through the basic motions of plant care. Anything could grow with water, sun, and love said a muffled, nearly inaudible voice, sounding as if it was being whispered through fabric.
Laying in an empty field of wildflowers, observing the vast impressive sky with a gentle voice explaining the intricacies of their universe and pointing out constellations. His favorite had been Aquarius, the water bearer. She laughed, and said that was fitting.
Images of a woman in a simple silk dress with stunning grey eyes that radiated kindness. It was blue, and borrowed. The shirt he was wearing itched the back of his neck, but he didn’t care. She had been holding a bouquet of homegrown violets, intertwined with lavender roses and daisies.
These memories, like fragile velveteen blooms, faded in vibrancy and withered into dust far before he was willing to forget. Meant to be admired for their beauty, but never meant to last.
Despite this, every Sunday, bleary or bright, he would adorn his stiff and shaking hands with hole-riddled work gloves and lower himself to the base of his flowerbed with a grunt. His knees would always protest the process, sending shockwaves of dull pain through his legs, but this never hindered his drive to care for his small assortment of plants. He had accepted that he was no longer capable of constructing vast, impressive landscapes that glowed with every hue imaginable, but he would never neglect the work that he was able to manage. This season, he had elected to have a combination of floral plants as well as some choice vegetables. His caretaker had mentioned bringing a few food bearing plants into the plot so they would have some fresh produce on hand to cut costs and potentially sell at farmer’s markets, which suited Harold nicely. He loved sharing the products of his hobby, which often lead him to have the yard that was the envy of the neighborhood, alive with blooms of varying shades and sizes, so incorporating the new plants to his arraignment while also maintaining the beauty he was known for would be a welcome challenge.
Yes, Harold was a lucky man. However, he was also a blessed man. Only a benevolent deity smiling down upon him could grace a caretaker that would garden with him.
Every Sunday, he would allow himself to shift focus and watch her work besides him for a brief time. Today, he watched her nimble fingers pat the earth around the base of the bright, new violets she had planted. Each plant was handled with the same undiluted care and attention, and she moved with a natural grace despite the tremoring of her fingers. He noted that she had removed her wedding ring for the work. Perhaps she was fearful of losing it to the soil. He could recall such an incident happening to someone he knew, but found it difficult to quite remember to whom. Nonetheless, it such a rarity to see her without it that he could clearly see its place indented on her second finger. As he watched, the sun passed through the thin overcast above and lit her plaited hair with silver fire. A shy smile teased his lips, and he finally broke his gaze, turning back to the tomatoes he had been checking for rot.
He could not describe the pure sensation of serenity that settled within his core whenever he had her company during their slow progress through the plot. The work was always silent, with minimal conversation. The only sounds that intruded on the silence were the scraping of trowels and the shuffling of fabric as they moved from one area to the next. It was so simple, yet the time always left Harold with a feeling of familiarity that warmed his spirit with a full-bodied happiness. He often wondered how it was that they were so in sync without the need for vocal communication, but never could settle on a stable conclusion. It was almost as if their souls were in tune, a pair of old lovers that danced fluidly to an unheard melody that resonated within. In his head hers was a violet color, a frustrating color stuck in the realm of almost purple, but also almost blue. Yet it was perfect. Frustrating, hard to remember, but perfect.
Despite their lack of conversation during their work, Harold felt as if he was close to his caretaker. He knew that they had been living together for years. How many years he had forgotten, but at this point it was arbitrary. What was important was that he knew he could trust her to be there, no matter the hour of the day, and that he enjoyed her company. There were also times where her two children would visit, and they would all talk over tea and the scent of fresh cut flowers. He could see tenderness in their eyes masking glimmers of sorrow, which puzzled him, but never felt the need to question it. However, the mood was always lighter when they two brought their children along as well. They had taken to calling him “Grandpap,” which touched his heart with overwhelming joy. He had always wanted to have children and grandchildren, but living vicariously through his caretaker was enough to satisfy his desire now that he was too far in life to pursue the goal himself.
A raindrop startled Harold, disrupting his train of thought. He squinted up at the muted gray sky in confused curiosity before another splattered on a fern green leaf before him. His caretaker shrieked in both shock and delighted surprise as rain began to cascade from the sky almost instantly afterwards, as if an invisible barrier in the heavens had burst. Harold felt the dirt beneath his knees begin to shift as it began to mix with the moisture, resulting in the calves of his jeans retaining a layer of mud as he clambered to his feet. He glanced down at the stains, and gave his caretaker a tentative look before cocking an amused eyebrow. She erupted into laughter, and he was quick to follow, reveling in the sudden burst of shared care-free youthfulness.
“Dance with me!” he said hoarsely, voice rough after the hour of silence, but light with glee and childlike energy.
“What? Now? Are you being serious?” she laughed, pushing away wet strands of hair that now clung to her face. The corners of her mouth creased as a half-smile teased her lips, and amusement flickered to life in the gentle grey of her irises.
“Yes I’m serious. When is the last time someone has danced with you in the rain, if at all? We’re old! We have nothing to lose!” He laughed, stepping closer. The stiffness in his hip and knee were forgotten in the moment, the near constant ache fading into the background as the rain intensified the scents surrounding them: the fresh crispness of the roses, the musky richness of the soil and sidewalks, and even the gentle fragrance of the fabric softener that clung to their wet clothing. However, it was the floating softness of violets that stood out to Harold, clearing his muddled mind. He gazed at his caretaker with a new air of clarity, taking one of her hands in his, grazing his calloused thumb over the back of her nimble fingers with a slow, feather-soft touch, willing his memory to take in this moment for his next gardening venture.
“Viola…can I please have this dance?”
She gazed at him, her lips parting partially as her eyes widened as they met his. The half-smile turned into a wavering grin, and had it not been raining Harold would have dared to call the moisture in the corners of her eyes the beginning of tears. She stepped forwards and without a word her free hand settled on his shoulder as his took position at her waist.
In the middle of the small garden, they danced with only the soft beating of the rain against the ground as their melody.
                                                       ***
“Allow me to grab you a towel, my dear.” Harold rasped as they stepped through the doorway. The prolonged time spent in the rain had left him with a stutter whittling at his vocal cords, and he coughed to displace the buildup forming in his throat. The cough triggered his diaphragm to start a coughing fit, and he gripped his cane for support throughout the onslaught. The worn wood fit with neat familiarity in his hand, as if a manufacturer rather than time had shaped it to his palm.
He felt the warmth of a gentle hand settle on his back, muted by the damp cotton of his shirt. It began rubbing small circles between his shoulder blades with a balance of firmness and care that could only come from experience in aid. He relaxed into the touch as the attack subsided, drawing comfort and gratitude from the soothing action.
“We shouldn’t have been out that long Harold. That was careless,” his caretaker sighed, continuing the comforting action even now that the coughing had ceased.
“Yes, but it was fun. I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” Harold rasped, grazing his knuckles against his lip, feeling the chapped skin catch against the friction of the action. He smacked his lips, finding his mouth to be too dry despite the thick coating of spit that now coated his tongue now that the frog in his throat had been dislodged.
“Now dear, you can’t manage that if your heart stops beating. I swear you’re going to be the death of me. I’ll be the first woman to die of worry. They’ll have to make that into a constellation. The woman of worry. Sollicitus uxorem.” She teased.
Harold opened his mouth to answer, but another fit of coughs spasmed through his form. The arms around his shoulders tensed, and the hand at his back grew more firm in its circular actions. He was able to use the touch to ground himself, leaning into it for comfort as his chest and throat began to burn as if the air being expelled from his lungs was sandpaper rubbing the sensitive lining raw.
“Did you take your medication today Harold?” asked his caretaker. There were undertones of both genuine concern and professional calmness layered within her tone as she led Harold to the linen closet. Before he could process the question, she had draped a lavender scented towel over his shoulders, and began rubbing warmth into his arms and shoulders.
“Yes ... I think I did. After the kids came over?” He replied, reaching into the closet to procure another towel. He turned, unfolding the towel before handing it over to her. Her silver hair was stained storm grey by the moisture, and the lines deepened in the corners of her eyes at his answer.
“Nobody came to visit today dear. The kids haven’t come home for three weeks now.” She sighed, wrapping the towel around her dripping frame.
“That…doesn’t sound right. Then what were we doing before we went outside?” Harold squinted his eyes, exploring the memories of the last few hours, sure that she was mistaken. His thoughts were muddled, like smeared paint on a ruined canvas. Smudged details marred the entirety of the picture, leaving the viewer clueless to what the painter had intended.
His caretaker led him to the kitchen, pulling his prescription tray from the top of the stainless steel refrigerator. She sighed at the blur of multi-colored pills still visible though the translucent compartment embossed with a fading blue S. She swiftly poured him a glass a tap water, emptying the contents of the first compartment into his palm.
“Have I ever told you that I am a lucky man to have you as my caretaker?” Harold said with a note of cheer in his voice. As he washed the tablets down with water, he noticed her shoulders slump, and her grey eyes shift towards the wedding band she had left on the scuffed dining table beside a vase of wilted, expired violets.
“Yes. You do,” she began, voice clear despite the emotion clogging her throat, clinging to the words that passed through. Her final words were barely audible, as if an afterthought. “Every day. You always have.”

Forest, fynbos and floral therapy
DISCOVER THE SOOTHING FORESTS AND FRAGRANT FYNBOS OF GROOTBOS IN THE CAPE FLORAL KINGDOM…
The world is a giant playground and if you don’t take the time to get out and explore, you’re missing out. From craggy mountain peaks, dusty deserts and psychedelic coral reefs, to vibey urban jungles, moody mist-filled rainforests and heart-shaped tropical islands, our glorious pale blue dot of a planet is Mother Nature’s masterpiece and an open invitation to explore.
One such invitation that I cannot recommend highly enough is the opportunity to hunker down, blissfully disconnect and truly get back to nature at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape. This verdant oasis sits within a lush floral kingdom, overlooking the whale-frequented waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Simply walking beneath the twisted tangle of moss-covered branches of its ancient milkwood forest is an invitation to press pause, to relax and to play.
Disconnect to connect I decided to take a little solo roadtrip from my favourite city on earth, Cape Town, along the famed Cape Whale Coast to the romantic Cape Winelands. The aim of this last-minute adventure, quite simply, was to switch off. To disconnect from city life, put away the laptop and be present in my favourite, most picturesque, corner of the world.
An easy two-hour drive from the Mother City and I was entering the magical Cape floral kingdom, the first stop on my route. Grootbos, which means ‘large forest’, is a 2 500 hectare (6 100 acre) luxury eco-reserve that is home to an impressive 817 plant species (100 of which are endangered and 6 of which have been newly discovered), 118 bird species, 29 mammal species and 3 millennium-old milkwood forests.
Cocoon mode My cocoon for the next few days was the simple, yet elegant and serene Grootbos Forest Lodge, (rightly) one of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. I followed an enchanting wooded path under a thick canopy of milkwoods to my luxury suite. As I stepped in, I was immediately captivated by the sprawling 180°view of the lilac-flowered fynbos slopes leading down to the sandy white dunes and powder blue ocean below.
Modern, minimalist and oh-so tranquil, the undeniable stars of my suite were the panoramic view, wood-burning fireplace and enormous, standalone oval bathtub-with-a-view. Winter was just arriving in the southern hemisphere, which meant warm afternoon sunshine perfect for exploring this natural playground. But once the late afternoon chill set in, returning to the sheer cosiness of a blazing fireplace, piping hot bubblebath and quiet glass of South African pinotage was the ultimate spoil.
Sliding the floor-to-ceiling glass doors to my private veranda open to soak in the amber sunset, the air was a mixture of fresh sea breeze and fragrant fynbos. A scent, and a feeling, I wish I could have bottled up and taken home with me.
Choose your own adventure Not only is Grootbos a thriving botanical playground, it is also a stone’s throw from ancient sea caves, undulating sand dunes, invigorating hikes and the whale and shark-frequented waters of Walker Bay. This was the open invitation to explore.
A wide range of daytime adventures awaits you. They are perfectly suited for the young and young at heart, the adrenaline junkie and the outdoor enthusiast, as well as those who simply want to unapologetically relax and eat/drink their way to happiness. No judgements here!
Choose from whale watching (seasonal) and shark cage diving, leisurely forest walks, horse-back riding, fat-biking on sand dunes, scenic flights, community visits, beach walks through ancient sea caves, and a flower safari. Or just indulge in the wholesome, organic food and local wines at the lodge and treat yourself to some you-time in the tranquil forest spa.
Nature’s therapy My first full day was indulgently leisurely. Waking up to thick fog and a dark, moody thunderstorm, it was a morning for bottomless cappuccinos, a hearty breakfast (poached eggs topped with spicy baked bean chakalaka on warm, sourdough toast) and the hypnotic sound of raindrops pummelling the corrugated iron roof above. The very definition of relaxing.
I eased into the relaxed vibe with a pre-sunset walk through the dewy labyrinth of milkwood trunks and gnarled branches heavily laden with moss. My expert guide and botanist at heart, Byron Loubser, is as contagiously enthusiastic as they come. He’s a ray of sunshine, an encyclopaedia of knowledge and an eternal optimist that brings this picturesque floral kingdom to life. Ask for Byron by name, you won’t regret it.
It was an hour of good old fashioned forest therapy. We lingered through the earthy scent of damp soil and the dappled shade of 1 000 to 1 500 year-old white milkwood trees covered in shaggy old man’s beard. We stumbled upon mole burrows, tasted bitter nettle leaves, attempted to crush abandoned, calcified kidney snail shells (an impossible feat) and listened for the distinct call of the elusive Cape rain frog. The weighty, burdensome cloud of city life had officially lifted from my shoulders.
A window to the past The heavens cleared up the next day and it was time to explore. It was a quick ten-minute drive through the sleepy seaside hollow of De Kelders, stopping en route to spot iridescent sunbirds basking on fiery orange aloes in full bloom. We arrived at the Klipgat caves, where a steep, winding staircase took us down the cliffside and onto the beach. We clambered over a few boulders and into another world.
A significant archaeological site, these ancient sea caves were excavated in 1969 and again in 1992. Evidence revealed these coastal caverns were formed millions of years ago and were inhabited by the Middle and Late Stone Age people. As we ambled through the cool, musty air of the rocky crevice, we observed fascinating 2 000 year-old relics, bones and shells that had been carefully salvaged from this bygone era. Even deeper excavations revealed stone tools and human remains from the Middle Stone Age civilisation dating back 70 000 years.
Like a window into a long-forgotten past, we marvelled at the perfectly framed and jagged view of the turquoise waves breaking at the cave’s entrance. The same exact view of crashing waves that would have been admired by ancient civilisations before us. And as we took silhouetted photographs at the gaping mouth of the cave, we also took a quiet moment to try and envision what cave life must have been like thousands upon thousands of years ago.
Where happiness blooms I had never been on a flower safari before, but Byron’s enthusiasm had me intrigued. “The reserve drive is my absolute favourite thing to do,” he exclaimed with a hearty laugh. “In life!” he added. Well, I was sold, and off we trundled in an open safari vehicle into the colourful abyss of the flourishing Cape floral kingdom. And how fitting to be exploring this flower-filled playground on World Bee Day (there are 220 hives on the reserve and the lodge’s signature fynbos honey ice cream is a must-try) and, days later, the International Day for Biological Diversity.
There are six floral kingdoms in the world and the Cape floral kingdom is the smallest of them all. Although it is roughly the size of Portugal, this tiny patch of land remains one of the hottest biodiversity hotspots on earth and is home to 3% of the entire planet’s plant species.
“What makes this area so special is that approximately 9 600 plant species are literally crammed into the southwestern corner of the African continent.” Byron explained, “And out of those 9 600 species, 70% of them occur nowhere else on planet earth.” A rare and enchanting place indeed. And using a jeweller’s magnification loupe, Byron was able to share each flower’s unique story with us.
At first glance, the landscape appeared verdant and monochromatic. But as you delve deeper into the thick of it, there are surprising bursts of unexpected colour everywhere. Found nowhere else in the world, the soft pink clusters of Erica irregularis dominate the scene, but look deeper and you’ll spot the canary yellow Erica coccinea, the spiky hedgehog lily (Massonia depressa) and the unmistakable fuchsia pink proteas (or the limestone sugar bush), to name a few.
Our flower safari ended on not one, but two, high notes. First, we were lucky enough to spot the fresh spoor and claw marks of the shy Cape mountain leopard in a small patch of Afromontane forest. And second, Byron had gathered a tussie-mussie (a small floral bouquet) of some of the most therapeutic fynbos for each of us to take back to our suites for a hot and well-deserved aromatic bath in that gigantic tub.
This blossoming little patch of floral heaven is well worth a (lengthy) visit. From whale watching and caving, to flower hunting, fat-biking and tree-hugging, you’ll need a few days to truly appreciate this miraculous and biodiverse playground. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
