Since I do this every time, here are some BTS facts about LBAF IV:

Ironically enough, the first scene I wrote is the last scene (David meeting Other Max)

David was initially supposed to be the Prince of Darkness. But then I had a 'vision' about Lance and I was like 'I like this better!' - It also helped me establish Dark Max.

As mentioned before, Camila was supposed to die. Rafael was going to name his daughter after her. But I changed it (thanks annie) and he named her after his first love and best friend.

I wanted Mallory to be a villain who fucked things up so monumentally that the trauma lasts for generations. Mission accomplished.

Mallory was also loosely inspired by a villain called 'Neelambari' in a tamil movie from the early 90s. It was my fave film as a kid and I was obsessed with this character. You can see peak Mallory vibes in this scene at 03.45 (she's the young girl in the purple sari) also max has rajinikanth vibes wtf.

I love the irony of the Clave rumor that Max has a mistress when in fact it is David who is with Other Max.

Cami and Theia parabatai was simply created (other than for plot reasons) because i really felt we needed more female parabatai in tsc.

Atlas and Theia are named in the same way all Blackthorns are - greek/roman history influence.

Theia means Goddess of Light (and she loves the Prince of Darkness) and yesh it was intentional.

Harry, who is a character we are yet to meet, is named after one of my closest friends.

In the original epilogue, we were supposed to get six povs of the six new kids - but i scrapped the whole thing and wrote a kincaid pov.

Kincaid means Head of the Battle or Battle Leader, meaning he is meant to lead the battle against PoD.

There are SO many hints in IALS that Lance is the PoD. I was so terrified one of you might figure it out lmao. Example 01:

Lance's fate was also hinted in DML when David reveals Lucifer is trying to hurt him.

There was a scene where Maryse talks to David and says 'The NY Institute has always been a place for rejects but it ended up being the place where we found the love we deserved'. It got deleted. (maybe in part 5?) It refers to the fact that Robert and Maryse (and Alec) ALSO got exiled from Idris after the Circle and were sent to the NY institute.

And yes Merlin was a gift from Leviathan to Arthur. Other Max looks after him in the future.

Kincaid originally had a black puppy called Bella and I changed it into a black horse. Because I felt Victoria and Kyl wouldn't approve of a cute puppy lol. The horse was also inspired by 'The Ebony Horse' from Arabian Knights.

The Idris Patrol uniform was very much inspired by the House Lannister armor/outfits from Game of Thrones.

David believes Lance is Nico reborn which is why he named Lance's middle name after him.

IALS was inspired by the 'what if' of what if David had left Max after finishing that letter and what if Max didn't know how to get the memories back. It's basically their story in the mundane world - where without magic to make things better everything is more complicated.

Joan's name is inspired by Joan of Arc (who both Liv and Lexi love)

The reason why Kincaid doesn't like Iris/Malik is that he feels he and Arthur were supposed to have the same story (childhood friends to lovers) but they couldn't.

And finally, Paradise Lost (the book David carries around in the entire fic) is about the story of Adam and Eve getting exiled from the Garden of Eden which was a metaphor for Mavid getting exiled from Idris.

Movie Review | Hum (Anand, 1991)

This review contains mild spoilers.

While I hadn't seen this before, I'd listened to this song from the movie countless times. (For those not familiar with Bollywood, most movies are not only musicals but often marketed on the basis of the songs, which in a lot of cases are more popular than the movies themselves.) Now, between the fact that I don't speak Hindi and the fact that seeing it outside the movie, I wasn't able to properly contextualize what exactly was going on. But seeing it within the movie, where it's introduced by a character saying all the dockworkers are going to see the hero kiss his girlfriend, and the thrusting motions in the choreography, it, uh, plays a little differently. To be fair, the dockworkers are very poor, so this is their only source of enjoyment. This is also easily the best musical number in the movie, so it understandably returns to it whenever possibly, through an assortment of flashbacks and reprises.

The narrative surrounding this scene is that there's a mobster played by Danny Denzongpa who keeps the dockworkers poor and stops them presumably from unionizing, so it's up to Amitabh Bachchan as the coolest of the dockworkers to stand up to him and take care of everybody. There's also a union leader / labour activist type who is given no personality types other than being righteous, so his scenes are a total drag, but thankfully he has a foxy sister (the girlfriend from the aforementioned musical number), so it evens out. But this story of dockworkers versus their criminal bosses sounds like enough material for a movie, and Bachchan and Denzongpa are both great screen presences and Mukul S. Anand shoots this in a similarly grandiose style as his Agneepath from the previous year, so there's plenty to enjoy.

However, this really only makes up the first hour of the movie, which then jumps forward a few decades so that Bachchan can grow up to his actual age instead of the supposed twenty-something he was in the first act (and grow an awful teenstache to boot, on top of becoming a wet blanket as he decries the use of violence with some regularity), for his brothers who were literal children in the first act to grow up into Rajinikanth and Govinda, for Denzongpa to get out of prison and stomp around in his tattered suit which he never changes out of, and for the crooked police inspector played by Anupam Kher (who has a lookalike sidekick) to become a crooked government contractor looking to sell defective tanks to the Indian army. Also there's a general and a starving actor both played by Kader Khan, the former of whom Bachchan tries to impress by doing an awful British accent and the latter who replaces the former as part of Kher's scheme. And the foxy girlfriend played by Kimi Katkar is now a famous actress. And a disgraced soldier named Captain Zatack who likes to attack.

In case you're wondering, none of this hangs together, although there's usually enough happening to keep you entertained. Apparently Agneepath flopped while this was a massive hit, and I have to assume audiences preferred the buffet approach to this one's pleasures as well as it's overall lighter tone, even the grimness and relative singlemindedness are what appealed to me about the other movie. This is a lot less action-heavy than Agneepath, although Anand shoots what's there for maximum impact (lots of slow motion, and those low angles and crane shots, plus at least one memorable stunt). And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the scene in the disco where Rajinikanth and Govinda, the latter dressed like Crocodile Dundee, beat the shit out of Captain Zatack and his goons while Prince's "Batdance" plays on the soundtrack. In case you're wondering, it's Rajinikanth who mouths "Get the funk up!"

 Phone Bhoot Movie Review: PHONE BHOOT has a fine first half with all the ingredients of a youthful, fun horror comedy.

PHONE BHOOT is the story of two ghostbusters. Sherdil Shergill aka Major (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Galileo Parthasarthy aka Guru (Ishaan Khatter; credited in the film simply as Ishaan) are best friends who have a crazy interest in ghosts and spirits ever since they were kids. They want to make money out of their love for ghosts. Sadly, all their business ideas flop. Nevertheless, they continue trying and they host a 'Moksha Party'. It emerges a success as several partygoers mark their presence. Unbeknownst to Major and Guru, they are all ghosts. One such ghost is Ragini (Katrina Kaif). She informs them that they are gifted with the ability to see dead people. Hence, she gives them a business idea that they should start a phone line for those who want to get rid of ghosts. Major and Guru refuse at first. But their fathers arrive at their doorstep and ask them to pay Rs. 5 crores, which is the amount spent on their sons till date. They are given a time period of three months. With no other option, Major and Guru accept the idea although they also wonder why Ragini wants to help them. At first, their initiative gets massively trolled. Later, once they start solving cases, their business idea becomes a success. It also gets them in the bad books of the evil Atmaram (Jackie Shroff), who traps spirits trying to achieve 'moksha' (salvation). Ravi Shankaran and Jasvinder Singh Bath's story has all the ingredients for a youthful, fun horror comedy. Ravi Shankaran and Jasvinder Singh Bath's screenplay, however, is shaky in several places. Ravi Shankaran and Jasvinder Singh Bath's dialogues are witty and funny. Gurmmeet Singh as a director handles certain scenes with panache, be it Major and Guru finding success as the ghostbusters, Major and Guru’s encounter with Chikni Chudail (Sheeba Chadha) or Major and Guru’s antics when Ragini is narrating her story. The pop culture references of FUKREY [2013], Katrina Kaif’s Mango Slice ad, Rajinikanth, MIRZAPUR [also directed by Gurmmeet Singh and backed by Excel], the coffin dancers, HINDUSTANI [1996], KHILADIYON KA KHILADI [1996], KOI MIL GAYA [2003], KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM [2001] etc. add to the fun element. On the flipside, certain references will go over the top. The character of Raaka forms an important part of the film but the makers, for no reason, did not feel it was important to explain its relevance to the current generation, who might have never watched a Ramsay film. But the bigger problem of the film is that it fails to evoke laughs in the second half. The climax is unimaginative and anything but funny.
