Forgive the drizzle drops on my lense. This grand Victorian house on Alison Road in Sydney’s Randwick used to be painted in an array of period colours. It looked wonderful - the new all white paint job is distinctly underwhelming.

Australia Travel Trip - April 2023.

Just over 3 weeks took us to Sydney business district 3 nights.

Road Trips: Bateau Bay 5 nights - where we visited The Entrance on the Central Coast NSW, onwards to Canberra for 5 nights and Melbourne for 4 nights - before we returned to Sydney (by Jetstar Airways).

Our last 3 nights were spent in Randwick, one of the suburbs of Sydney near Centennial Park.

It was from here where we took trips to Bondi Beach one day and another, we walked to Coogee Beach.

Just to note, Coogee Beach is a long way DOWNHILL - no way were we walking back up again.

Dotterel Day

Today is Dotterel Day, which fell at the height of the old bird netting season, in which the allegedly dozy Dotterel, was a favourite prey. Only a few hundred of these birds now survive in the British Isles, mainly in the north of Scotland, although this reduction of numbers is recent and more likely due to climate change rather than historic hunting. Being easy to catch, the Dotterel developed a reputation for stupidity, leading to the term ‘dotterel’ being used to describe a foolish or gullible person.

A sprawling fair on the streets of Randwick, near Stroud in Gloucestershire, the Runnick Wap, takes place on the second Saturday in May, leading it to be named Wap Saturday. It features a magnificent parade in which the participants dress in eighteenth and nineteenth century costume and carry a Wap Mayor and Wap Queen to the village pond before dumping them in. The suitably drenched Mayor and Queen then lead a Double Gloucester cheese rolling event down a steep bank to determine the health of the crops in the coming summer. The events are supposed to date from medieval times.
