Today's hot take:
Halt is objectively terrible at being a YA fantasy mentor. Instead of providing the hero with moral guidance and getting conveniently killed to push the plot, he not only refuses to die but also has the most questionable morals he can get away with.

Ranger's Apprentice is truly an fascinating book series, because it starts as the normal kid's book, where in book one our young underdog protagonist discovers he's good at something and goes on a big adventure that is in the periphery of a larger plot, then in book two he goes on another, slighty bigger adventure that takes him to the larger plot, but then it takes a sharp turn and book three is just, our main young protagonist gets kidnapped and enslaved and develops a drug addiction to cope with the harsh conditions... and people just let him publish that! Wild, 11/10 would recommend.

Yes we all love that scene in book 2 when Halt throws a Baron in a moat for being misogynistic. Great scene, 10/10.
But why. Why have we forgotten.
He only did it because Alyss, the gentle diplomatic goddess, told him to. She turned mafia boss for a second and was like “Halt, moat this guy” and Halt was just happy to go along with it. He wouldn’t have done it if Alyss didn’t give him the go ahead.

Find it incredibly funny that in the first two books of Ranger's Apprentice the main antagonist is a guy with a psychic link to a bunch of bear-like monsters and then several books later one of the plot points is "magic isn't real you idiot"

One of my favourite details in TEY is how every autistic thing Halt does gets promptly justified by Crowley with the "he's Hibernian" card and everyone just nods sagely, because apparently that's a perfect explanation for any weird behaviour imaginable.

Will is described throughout the series as having an incredibly quick mind. He catches on to things fast, and his ability to put two and two together is uncanny, Halt literally said in book 9 that he would choose Will over Gilan and Crowley because of how quick he is (not to mention he's his son but whateva)
Berrigan said it, Halt said it, pretty sure Crowley and Arald have said it, Will. is. incredibly. smart.
Which makes his obliviousness all the more funny. Cuz you put this kid in a room of advanced battle strategists and King's councilmen and he can rise to the occasion and catch on to every word, and probably even help them out.
But you put him a situation where an equally as smart, equally as quick-witted, courier is in love with him and has given him every indication that she's in love with him, literally KISSED HIM several times....and he's still not catching the drift??
Hilarious. Comedic perfection. What an adorable little man.

Will's first day of the ranger apprenticeship.
I love the scene when Halt is reading some reports, he's musing to himself and Will starts asking him questions. And Halt, for the first time, actually answers them :]
