Rathnam

 Rathnam is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language romantic action film written and directed by Hari.

 The film stars Vishal in the titular role, alongside Priya Bhavani Shankar, Ramachandra Raju, Samuthirakani, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Yogi Babu. The film marks the third collaboration of Vishal and Hari after Thaamirabharani and Poojai.

The music and background score is composed by Devi Sri Prasad, in his sixth collaboration with Hari after Aaru (2005), Singam (2010), Venghai (2011), Singam II (2013) and Saamy square (2018); maiden with Vishal.

  Rathnam is scheduled to release on April 26 in theatres.

"Abstract

Popular discourse about freedom of speech tends to default to the metaphor of the marketplace of ideas, notwithstanding empirical evidence undermining this concept. Its persistence illustrates the profound attachment freedom of speech inspires, despite the difficulty of justifying it in epistemic terms. I suggest that the ancient Greek historian Herodotus offers a compelling alternative to the marketplace metaphor with his account of isegoria at Athens. In Herodotus’s telling, Athenian equal right of speech is worthwhile not because of its effects on speech but because of its effect on political culture; equal speech energizes the Athenians and Athens. He thus offers a nonepistemic defense of the right to speak, defending it instead in terms of power and belonging. Yet his account also highlights how Athenian equal speech unleashes political harms and therefore offers a way to defend free speech without minimizing its dangers. Herodotus thus helps us productively reframe contemporary free speech debates."

A movie about the Chola dynasty, a Tamil empire in South India during  3rd century BCE, and still the main characters are played by light skinned actresses.

India continues to be a colorist hell hole.

The book is really good and I want to be excited for this, but this first look poster just make me angry at the colorism and implications.

Obviouly, this movie aims to be a faithful adaptation of Kalki’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, which itself is rooted in the history of the 10th and 11th centuries Chola dynasty. First, historically, it’s a known fact that Kundavai Pirattiyar was a bold woman who is believed to have been one of the shadow architects of Rajaraja Cholan’s power and empire. Secondly, Kalki’s novel is clearly about the joys and sorrows of the royal dynasty mainly and not the population over which they ruled. Thirdly, Kundavai is described for her beauty and her fair skin may be pointed out by Kalki as one of the traits of her beauty (I write « may » because I suppose so, I don’t remember all her descriptions in the novel). In short, if the director wanted to adapt the novel’s universe ‘as it is’, it’s not a surprising representation of Kundavai.

But it’s actually not (really) what is disturbing here. If Kundavai was portrayed alone, my colorism radar would not have turned on.

The problematic fact is the urge to portray the fair-skinned princess surrounded by dark-skinned girls. The problematic fact is that the chromatic and aesthetic composition of the poster is based on the obvious skin tone contrast between the princess whose light-skinned face appears in a halo of light and her little ladies who appear like a darker embroidery around her radiant presence. The problematic fact is that there has clearly been a work to enhance the poster’s tones which creates a striking difference between the fair Kundavai and the girls who are strangely so homogeneously dark-skinned.

Then, what is the purpose of this bunch of dark-skinned girls on a first look poster which doesn’t give any information on the plot, if not to highlight the fair-skinned princess’s beauty ? Does their presence have any other meaning than decorative ?

Their skin color in this poster (and I guess, in the film) is not a random fact, it has been chosen by the film artistic team to create a certain representation of a female protagonist which itself is rooted in an obvious and quite long-standing colorism in Tamil popular culture, which itself is rooted in casteism and colonialism. Thus, this poster is not an exception in Tamil cinema. Think about all these song sequences where the light-skinned amidst a myriad of dark-skinned dancers

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I don't get many and I do try to reply to everyone (except occasionally @haraxvati's because I'm usually a puddle of goo when I'm done reading what she has to say). Someone once said they wanted to get a fic tattooed, which is a pretty amazing compliment!

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

None of my fics have angsty endings, though they traverse some pretty angsty paths.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I don't know how you'd measure "happiest"; all of them involve my faves finding their way to be together.

Do you get hate on fics?

Thankfully no.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do, with great difficulty. I often end up with something different from what I intended at the start. Most recently with or an excuse to stay on deck, I like to say I wanted I Wanna Be Your Slave by Maneskin and ended up with I Wanna Be With You by Mandy Moore - 'twas ever thus.

I am trying to be more thoughtful and grounded about it these days.

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I've borrowed characters, but I don't think I've ever written a proper crossover.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but I'd love that!

What's your all-time favorite ship?

I can't pick a favourite ship - they're all my messy children and I love them all pretty equally.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

There is a Vincenzo AU fic that I have seen in my mind's eye. It has Hong Cha-young being the agent of her own revenge. I know how it ends, I know how it goes. I know that it will be good. I cannot for the life of me write beyond the 20k words I already have.

I don't want to say I doubt I ever will finish it, because hope springs eternal!

I did post a mini excerpt for the Reborn Rich fandom which would have turned into a Jin Do-jun/Oh Se-hyeon fic (except I gender-swapped Jin Do-jun to be played by Jeon Yeo-been). I'm positive I will never finish that, but I think it would have been a good story.

I think I land a good one-liner from time to time.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Consistency, pacing, dialogue - I'll steal Pri's answer here and confess that my hope is to improve the more I write.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Many moons ago I wanted to do a fic for the Mani Rathnam movie Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. I considered Tamil dialogue for it between Jyothika and Vijay Sethupathy's characters that I would translate to English. I'm amused by this because so many of Mani Rathnam's characters speak like someone wrote their dialogues first in English and translated them into Tamil.

Godfather in 2003 or 2004.

Favorite fic you've written?

I think the fic that has the most of me in it is metadata.

I will always have a soft spot for my Chief of Staff fics, especially this one. I'm not sure I'll have the bandwidth to do something like that again, but I'm proud of how I wrote that one.

Just watched Ponniyin Selvan and here's what's in my mind.

Vandhiyatthevan is bisexual (at least according to me). I mean, did you notice how his face was when Arulmozhi placed the crown on his head?! Not to mention that scene where he drew Sendhan Amuthan closer to him and threatened him.

Herodotean Journeys: Diversity and Political Judgment in Herodotus’ Histories

"Abstract (summary):

In his Histories, the ancient Greek Historian Herodotus posits that to mock other cultures is sure proof of madness, for “If there were a proposition put before mankind, according to which each should, after examination, choose the best customs in the world, each nation would certainly think its own customs the best.” (Histories, 3.38). Herodotus thus suggests how difficult it is to judge across cultures; even after examination, judgment is constrained by conventional boundaries. Yet in his Histories, Herodotus himself continually examines other cultures; he is able to genuinely engage with the diversity of his world. In this dissertation, I argue that Herodotus therefore models a way of engaging with diversity, precisely because he attends to the affective attachments that often impede such investigation. His work therefore offers a therapy of judgment for his readers, one accomplished through the way Herodotus’ artful narrative inserts his audience into his story; the spectating audience is led to inquire into difference, to feel the excitement of inquiry, and, occasionally, to suffer a chastening recognition when such looking goes awry. The inquirer can be heroic, like Herodotus, wrestling with competing logoi and saving them from the ravages of time. But Herodotus uses textual foils to demonstrate some of the pitfalls that can befall inquiry. The inquirer can be a mere voyeur; hobbled by conceptual errors; a mad imperialist; or one’s inquiries can be barren, kept private and to oneself, offering no aid or insight to one’s community. Herodotus’s example transcends these foils. Yet Herodotus does not merely show these errors; he lets the audience ‘feel’ them, and so be implicated in these marred inquiries. These painful recognitions lead his audience to suffer vicariously with others, and so to gain insight usually won too late. His method, which recruits and thus rehabilitates the attachments of his audience, thus helps to communicate the substance of his inquiries. To rehabilitate the attachment of his audience, Herodotus must spark the desire to inquire for its own sake. To do this, Herodotus reveals that attending to diversity matters because the multiplicity of cultures reveals the complexity of nature. Attending to diversity allows us to understand ourselves as human beings. Herodotus, the first historian, suggests that the purpose of history - in Greek, inquiry - is not simply to determine the facts and dates of what happened, but rather to inquire into what mankind has brought into being: not only what happened, but our stories about what happened: customs, traditions, and songs. His inquiry is into what these phenomena reveal about who we are."
