Balfonheim, where power equals authority

Balfonheim operates under the guidance of a 'council' formed by influential individuals of the town. This council, lacking a formal assembly, resembles more of a gathering of the influential and powerful figures. As a result, these meetings often occur discreetly within the confines of homes.

Presently, the most prominent figure in Balfonheim is a renowned sky pirate named Reddas, who emerged on the scene just two years ago. During a time when the town was embroiled in disputes regarding the Archadian Empire, Reddas swiftly quelled these factions, establishing himself as a formidable force. While some opposition exists against his approach of securing Balfonheim's autonomy with money, the majority of the port town's residents acknowledge Reddas' capabilities and trust his leadership.

<- In one corner of the town, a pro-Reddas group and an anti-Reddas group are holding separate rallies.

I love Reddas' description at final fantasy wiki. it's accurate, yes, but it sounds insane

Reddas is a mature man of 33, with a strong, stocky build. He has a white beard, mutton chops, and a bald head. He wears a camel shirt with exposed shoulders, large bell-sleeves and a large collar. Across his shirt he wears a dark leather strapped holster, in which he keeps his weapons, the Chirijiraden and the Ninja Knife. He wears pink cropped trousers and a silver pendant around his neck. On his feet he wears open-shinned strap boots.

he truly doesn't follow fashions. not sure if he leads them either, though

side note, I'm the same age as Reddas and I would cry if someone called me a mature woman. Just cause his hair is white doesn't mean he's old. It's to tell a story of his guilt and trauma I think

Actual update! I had a whole whirlwind of an excellent time today, lots of progress and MAXIMUM FEELS.

First up: got to Archades, fought Cid for the first time! Met Reddas! Cid and Balthier's interactions here are so fucking good, and Cid really plays up the role that's expected of him.

Got to Balfonheim! Which means my fave cutscene full of stuff no one ships!! Ondore/Reddas my beloved.... He has a Bhujerban ship, u know 🥰🥰 anyway, I love this conversation between Reddas and Ondore, it's so loaded it gives me all the brain wiggles

Onwards and onwards, to Giruvegan! I was struck by how much the waterline and silhouettes made me think of Camp Bronze Lake in xiv, it's really beautiful. One of the many times I've wished for a freecam or photomode in tza!

I'd totally forgotten about the cutscene with Ashe and the Occuria, it was so fucking good!! She finally begins to realise where her path might take her, and the scene itself is immaculately acted and animated. Ashe's trembling lips in the closeup of her mouth, fantastic.

And my stopping point for the day: one of my fave cutscenes! I love so much about this one. Cid and Vayne talking about Larsa, the discussion on nethicite being baubles or not, the appearance from Venat. They also both look gorgeous as well, ofc. And Vayne does this SUPER CUTE happy cat slow blink smile at Venat and I'm unwell about it!! I'm also unwell about Cid Profile, as ever. Ough...

Anyway, this might be doable! I'm having some struggles on bosses and on normal mobs which is interesting, because I'm normally a huge grinder. Thinking I might need to do a lil clan centurio backtrack, at least to get Decoy, because not having a dedicated tank is tricky. All in all, I've got too used to my main lv89-91 save with ultimate weapons HAHA, oops. Also this bitch is CONSTANTLY SKINT. I KEEP RUNNING OUT OF PHOENIX DOWNS. A travesty!!

Balfonheim; then and now

Situated on a peninsula in the eastern Archadian region, Balfonheim is a port town that, in its earlier days, thrived as a prominent fishing port in Ivalice. Over time, it evolved into a hub for piracy. As the Archadian Empire intensified its crackdown on piracy, the residents shifted towards the legitimate shipping industry, transforming the town into a center for maritime transportation and trade. Despite the shift from piracy to legal trade, Balfonheim has consistently dominated the Naldoan Sea, boasting a high standard of living for a town of its size. While this port town is self-governed, it pays a substantial sum to the Archadian Empire, securing a unique autonomy within the imperial structure.

In the present day, Balfonheim hosts a diverse community, encompassing pirates, sky pirates, fishermen, and the rough-and-tumble; the kind of people who have abandoned their homeland. Many of the inhabitants have anti-establishment views, and so as the empire grows in power, relations with the empire gradually deteriorate. And those who took an anti-imperialist stance became more prominent. Despite this, the people of Balfonheim have yet to throw their lot with the Resistance, as it brings no tangible benefits to their community.
