“IT’S SNOWING!”

Jungkook grunts as he rolls over. He squints as he looks out his bedroom window. There’s absolutely no snow, only rain beating down harshly.

He glances at his alarm and curses. He doesn’t actually have to be awake to leave for work since it’s his day off. His only plan for the day was to sleep in, eat, and play video games. “Jin-hyung, you’re an asshole.”

The eldest laughs his windshield wiper laugh and skedaddles out of the room. Another moment later and he pokes his head back in.

“You’re on groceries today.” Jin reminds him. “And we need a lot, thanks to yours and Jimin’s cooking fiasco the other day … oh, and Hoseok’s party.”

That makes him snicker under his breath. Oh, that was so fun.

Anyways. He nods, rolling his eyes playfully. He really doesn’t mind doing the groceries, and if it keeps his hyungs happy, then he’s happy. He runs through a mental checklist of what they might need. Taehyung’s favorite chips, Jimin’s favorite juice, the slabs of meat that Jin and Yoongi prefer to cook with, the certain variety of apple that Hoseok is particular about, Namjoon’s favorite cereal …

When he finishes voicing this thought to Jin, the eldest nods. “That and whatever you want, since you're paying this time. Oh thank god, since last time I had to buy them, you added on like nine different packs of ramyeon!”

Jin is exaggerating obviously, because Jungkook knows he asked for eight varieties, not nine.

The eldest hands him a grocery list. Huh. There’s the paper Hoseok was looking for. There’s little things on there, like different fruits and vegetables and a whole section just dedicated to ice cream varieties and chips. Jin only writes down things outside of what they usually get. So it’s like a “get what we always get PLUS what is written on the list. Then, unlike the writing of the list, in green ink, one singular item is written in sparkly pink pen: sponge.

Easy stuff, really. He could just DoorDash it, but that would be admitting defeat.

So he shrugs on a hoodie and runs to his (Yoongi’s) beaten-down pickup truck. They’ve designated this as the grocery shopping vehicle, both because it’s a larger car than Jin’s or Jimin’s and also because Yoongi had hit so many potholes that the truck could literally only drive the distance of the grocery store and back. They only have to fill it with gas once a month basically, so it saves a lot of money. (That and Yoongi refuses to get a new car)

He still gets soaked trying to get into the truck and out and once he’s finished with the grocery shopping, (he has to run to like three different stores afterwards to find the sponge Jin wrote in his pink pen) it’s raining even harder.

Coupled with the fact that it’s the beginning of February, it’s not much of a surprise that he wakes up with a nasty cold the next morning.

“hHeh-tshuu!”

Jin shrieks from where he’s seated at the table and inches further from Jungkook. “You rat! Take your germs elsewhere!”

Jungkook sniffles and rubs his nose with a napkin he picks up from seemingly out of nowhere. (It’s actually Jin’s breakfast napkin and there’s a syrup stain that he finds the hard way. His face is now sticky with syrup but … at least it smells nice?)

He sneezes again and dear god, he needs an actual nose blow but the whole “I have syrup on my face” thing is actually quite traumatizing and maybe he could go for a wet wipe of sorts??

Apparently he’s staring into space because when he regains more awareness it’s to Jin poking him in the nose and he sneezes again.

He coughs this time, feeling more and more like his throat is going through a trash compactor.

Jin sighs, using a (clean) napkin to wipe the maknae’s face. “This is all because of the rain? I thought idiot’s didn’t catch colds..”

Jungkook coughs again, sniffling afterwards when he feels his nose start to run. “This was for your sponge.”

The eldest stops. “Oh, do I owe you or something? The sponge was like, a dollar right?”

Jungkook nods and Jin leaves

He never gets the dollar, only a cold.

Happy Black History Month!

I want to take time to honor the black and brown people who have fought boldly for their rights, and the rights of all. I want to highlight the innovators, leaders, and teachers that have made a positive impact on this country, and remind everyone that diversity is always a strength.

So, to start off this month, I'd like to honor T.O. Jones, who lead the sanitation worker strike in Memphis, TN in 1968. Memphis had just been named one of the cleanest cities in the country, when two santitation workers were crushed in the back of the garbage truck due to a malfunction with the trash compactor.

At the time, almost all sanitation workers in Memphis (and presumably in a lot of cities) were black. They were not allowed to ride in the truck cab, because collecting garbage made them smell bad, and were therefore delegated to the back of the truck, to ride with the trash itself. During a storm, the workers climbed into the back of the truck to avoid the rain, leading to the terrible accident. It has been said that concerns about the safety of that vehicle and many others had been stated multiple times before the accident, but the mayor had refused to take dilapidated trucks out of circulation.

T.O. Jones lead the effort to unionize, and even stood up to the mayor of Memphis, who had very little respect for these workers. He tried to call in scabs to pick up the trash that was piling up, but eventually had to capitulate. Sanitation work is important work, and the people who did it deserved better that poverty wages that left many on wellfare. They didn't get paid overtime, and couldn't even find many places to eat while working, as most restaurants banned them due to the smell.

The union formed from this strike is actually the union I am a part of now! AFSCME supports many of the necessary but not glamorous jobs that make our neighborhoods safer and cleaner, as well as supporting teachers, and mental hygiene workers like me!

19. Bots On A Plane

We are shown at the beginning of the episode a three-story laboratory on top of a mountain. It is revealed to be Dr. Light's Skylab. Inside the Skylab, Mega Man and Rush are inside a large, circular chamber, similar to that in skydiving simulation chambers. Mega Man is practicing some maneuvers with his Sky Suit on. Rush is simply fooling around while in his glider form. "Careful, Rush." Mega Man says to him. In one of the labs in the Skylab, Dr. Light is working on a flying vehicle. Roll looks out one of the large windows in the lab's living room and watches a fleet of sky vehicles passing by. The sky vehicles are leading a large battle airship as it passes through the sky. Roll is amazed by the airship's size. "Wow! It's so huge!" Roll says to herself. Mega Man and Rush are done with their training, and join Roll in watching the battle airship fly by. A strange medium-sized plane nears the airship. Mega Man and Roll wonder what its doing there, as it is not part of the fleet. They watch in horror as Tornado Man and Cut Man use their jetpacks and fly to the top of the airship. Mega Man and Roll run to Dr. Light.

They tell him that Dr. Wily is attacking the airship. Dr. Light runs over to the window to see for himself. He is shocked to see that the top of the airship is slightly smoking from Dr. Wily's attack. He has Mega Man and Rush go over to the airship to help it. Mega Man puts his Sky Suit back on and he and Rush fly over to the airship to intervene with Dr. Wily's attack on it. Roll wants to help them, but Dr. Light tells her that he doesn't need her help yet. She looks out the window as Mega Man and Rush arrive at the airship. At the top of the airship, Mega Man and Rush see that a large hole has been blasted into the top of the airship. Mega Man is about to go into the hole, but is blown back by Tornado Man's weapon. Rush catches Mega Man. Mega Man flies back towards where Tornado Man is standing. Tornado Man sends out some Lightning Lords to stop him. Mega Man uses his Sky Suit's missiles to destroy them. Tornado Man then runs back inside of the airship. Mega Man and Rush fly into the airship after him. Mega Man sees that the airship has been taken over by Dr. Wily. Dr. Wily is in the airship's main control room and sees that Mega Man is now inside the airship. He sends out some of his robot masters to take care of him. Mega Man reaches the airship's quarters and discovers that the airship's crew has been bolted in their rooms. Mega Man uses his arm cannon to unbolt some of the rooms. As he is unbolting the next door, he feels a tap on his shoulder, he looks to see who it is. It is Guts Man, who punches his so hard that he goes right through the door. Rush bites Guts Man on his butt. "Yeow!" Guts Man yells out in pain. Guts Man gets very angry and grab Rush and throws him against a wall, badly damaging him. Mega Man rushes over to his dog to help him, but Guts Man grabs him and tears the wings off of his Sky Suit. "Poor little birdie, ha ha ha!" Guts Man yells out mockingly as he is in the process of tearing the suit's wings off. He then violently throws Mega Man to the ground, slightly damaging him. Guts Man then goes over to Rush and is getting ready to stomp on his head. Mega Man shouts out "No!", and fires a missile at him. The missile defeats him. Mega Man then takes his Super Arm weapon. He goes over to Rush and carries him in one of his arms.

He takes him to the airship's repair room, and fixes him. They walk out of the repair room. The crew that he freed guide him and Rush to the airship's main control room. Mega Man and the crew run to the main control room. Cut Man bursts out of the main control room with his Rolling Cutter weapon ready to fire. "I'm cutting your little rescue mission short!" Cut Man cries out to them. "Not if I can help it!" Mega Man cries out to him. Mega Man tries to fire out a missile at him, but to his shock, he is out of missiles. "Oh no! I'm out of missiles!" Mega Man cries out. "Ahe ahe ahe, not if you can help it, huh?" Cut Man sinisterly says to him. He then fires a Rolling Cutter at the crew members. Mega Man shouts out "Oh no you don't Cut Man!" and gets in front of the crew. The Rolling Cutter cuts off one of the wings on Mega Man's Sky Suit. Mega Man yells at the crew to get away from them. Proto Man comes out of the main control room to see what is going on. "So there's a little party going on out here, huh?" Proto Man says to Cut Man. "Looks like fun!" Proto Man says as he blasts Mega Man with a fully charged shot from his plasma cannon. Fortunately for Mega Man, his Sky Suit takes most of the damage from the shot. His Sky Suit falls apart. "Sorry about your costume there, little bro." Proto Man sarcastically says to him. "I can always get a new one!" Mega Man shouts at him. Mega Man then shoots at Cut Man and Proto Man. Proto Man and Cut Man simultaneously fire their weapons at him. Mega Man avoids the Rolling Cutter, but it distracts him from Proto Man's shot. Mega Man is hit by the plasma shot and loses most of his power. Cut Man and Proto Man each grab one of his arms and drag him down the hall and into a room. The room is where the airship's trash is compacted for later disposal. "In here, Cut Man!" Proto Man says to Cut Man as they throw him into the trash compactor. Proto Man turns the trash compactor on, and he and Cut Man leave the room. "Bye bye, bro!" Proto Man shouts out to a weakened Mega Man as he and Cut Man exit the room. Mega Man calls up Dr. Light and tells him that Proto Man and Cut Man have thrown him into the airship's trash compactor and have turned it on. Dr. Light informs the airship's crew that Mega Man is in the trash compactor room and that he is low on power. The crew rushes over to the trash compactor room. Proto Man stops them from entering the room and threatens to shoot them if they try to go into the room to save Mega Man. Mega Man overhears Proto Man from inside the trash compactor room. Afraid that Proto Man is unable to let the crew into the room to save him, he calls up Dr. Light and has him send Eddie just in case. The compactor is getting closer to crushing Mega Man. Eddie quickly shows up and goes through the window in the trash compactor room. He throws Mega Man some energy cans. Mega Man drinks them, and as the trash compactor gets closer to crushing him, he stops the compactor with both of his hands. He pushes up the compactor and gets out of the trash compactor. "Now where's those scumbots!?" Mega Man cries out. He and Eddie leave the trash compactor room and look for the crew and the bad robots.

He goes down one of the halls and sees Proto Man and Cut Man leading them outside to where the air vehicles are docked. Mega Man blasts both Proto Man and Cut Man with some shots from his plasma cannon. Cut Man and Proto Man turn around to see Mega Man aiming his cannon at them. "Want a second helping?" Mega Man says to them.  "So you escaped the trash compactor, didn't you?" Proto Man says to him. Proto Man has Cut Man lead the crew outside. Proto Man tells Mega Man that the crew are going to board some air vehicles and are going to help Dr. Wily attack Washington, D.C. He also tells them that Dr. Wily can have the vehicles self destruct if they refuse to comply with his commands. "Thanks for the update, Proto Man!" Mega Man shouts out to him before blasting him with his cannon. A weakened Proto Man warns Mega Man that some other robots other than Cut Man are out there with the crew. Mega Man tells him that he will simply get rid of them. Mega Man walks outside onto the platform where the vehicles are docked.  Tornado Man and Air Man run up to Mega Man to stop him from saving the crew. Tornado Man shoots out a tornado at Mega Man. Mega Man uses the tornado to jump above Tornado Man and Air Man. Mega Man runs over to Cut Man, who turns around and fires a Rolling Cutter at him. Mega Man dodges the Rolling Cutter, which hits Air Man in the giant fan on his chest, damaging it. "Look what you did!" Air Man shouts out to Cut Man. "He's getting to the crew!" Tornado Man shouts at Air Man and Cut Man, who are still arguing over Cut Man's  weapon damaging Air Man's fan. Tornado Man whistles with his fingers and summons some Batontons and Bunby Helis to stop Mega Man.

Mega Man calls up Rush on his arm cannon and tells him to go to where the vehicles are docked. He then calls up Dr. Light as he dodges the Batontons and Bunby Helis. He tells him about what Proto Man told him, and to send out some military air vehicles to rescue the crew. Mega Man hangs up the call, and then destroys some of the flying robotic enemies. Cut Man shoots at Mega Man, but some of his cutters end up destroying the robotic enemies instead. "Thanks for the help, Cut Man!" Mega Man sarcastically says to Cut Man. "Yes! I am helping! Ahe ahe ahe!" Cut Man says as he shoots one of his cutters at Mega Man. Mega Man manages to grab the cutter and throw it back at Cut Man. The cutter cuts Cut Man's arm off. Cut Man grabs his sever arm and runs away back to the airship. Tornado Man uses his weapon against Mega Man. Mega Man fires a fully charged shot at him, knocking him out. Mega Man then copies his weapon. Proto Man and Dr. Wily rush out onto where Mega Man and the crew are. Dr. Wily yells at the crew to get onto the vehicles. He has Proto Man aim his cannon at them as they frantically get into the vehicles. "Oh no you don't!" Mega Man cries out. He uses his weapon against Proto Man, who to his surprise manages to dodge the weapon. Dr. Wily tells Proto Man to distract Mega Man while he heads back to the main control room. As Proto Man is listening to Dr. Wily, Mega Man manages to hit him with Tornado Man's weapon. The weapon nearly throws Proto man off of the airship. Proto Man manages to grab onto the edge of the vehicle platform. Mega Man walks up to him as he is still hanging onto the platform. "Hanging in there, huh bro?" Mega Man says to him. Proto Man looks down and sees a plateau underneath. "Yeah, but not for long!" Proto Man cries out. Proto Man lets go of the platform and lands onto the plateau below. "Have fun stopping them, bro!" Proto Man cries out to Mega Man, waving at him goodbye. Mega Man hears Dr. Wily over the airship's intercom, telling the crew to follow his commands or else face a fiery death. The crew are attempting to go into the vehicles. Mega Man yells at them to not listen to Dr. Wily. They tell Mega Man that if they don't comply, that he will send out some Sniper Joes to force them into their vehicles, so they really don't have a choice. "Where's the backup?" Mega Man says to himself. He realizes that he can't stop the crew, so he decides that the next best thing to do is to confront Dr. Wily himself. He runs over to the door into the airship. Dr. Wily says over the intercom to Mega Man to not bother with trying to stop him. "Dream on, Wily!" Mega Man shouts at him. Inside the main control room, Dr. Wily is about to send out some robot enemies after Mega Man. A Wily Bot comes into the main control room and tells him that some military aircraft has been spotted approaching the airship. Dr. Wily sends out some robot enemies to stop the military aircraft.

Meanwhile, outside of the airship, Mega Man sees the military aircraft approaching the airship. "Thank goodness!" Mega Man says. He then sees some Pipis and Bunby Helis attacking the military aircraft. "Oh no!" Mega Man cries out. He assists the military aircraft by destroying some of the robot enemies attacking them. Roll flies to the airship in her air jetski. "Don't worry, Mega, the calvary has arrived!" She cries out to Mega Man. "Watch out, Roll!" Mega Man yells out to her as some Pipis are approaching her from behind her air jetski. Roll manages to avoid them before they can drop their egg bombs on her. Mega Man calls up Rush on his arm cannon and has him come meet him on the airship's platform. One of the military aircraft call up Mega Man on his arm cannon and tell him that some of them will rescue the crew flying the air vehicles. Rush comes out to Mega Man on the platform. Mega Man has Rush turn into his jet form. He gets on Rush and the two of them fly up to the main control room. "Let's give Wily a nice surprise!" Mega Man tells Rush. Up in the main control room, Dr. Wily is controlling the air vehicles heading towards Washington. Mega Man and Rush break through one of the windows. "It's over, Wily!" Mega Man shouts at Dr. Wily. As Mega Man and Rush break into the main control room, some of the military robots have broken down the door leading to the main control room and have rushed inside the main control room. Dr. Wily realizes that he has been cornered. He pushes a button on one of the panels. "Lucky for me, the vehicles attacking Washington will keep you lot busy!" Dr. Wily says as he goes down the escape chute. As he is going down the chute, he shouts out "Until next time, Mega Man! Hwa ha ha ha ha!" Mega Man and the military robots can only watch as Dr. Wily and his robots fly away in the Skullker.

"Enough Wily watching! We have some crew members to save!" Mega Man shouts out to the military robots. Mega Man calls up Dr. Light on his arm cannon and asks him how he can stop the vehicles from self-destructing. Dr. Light tells him that the military has brought along some hackers who can help him save the crew. The hackers make their way to the main control room and are able to stop the vehicles from self-destructing. The crew thank them for saving them. One of the screens in the main control room flashes red and blares out an alarm. The airship is about to crash into a mountain. Mega Man has the military robots pilot the airship while he and Rush fly around the airship in order to manually steer it. Mega Man and Rush fly around the airship. The airship can slightly turn right to avoid colliding with the mountain, but it will still bump into the mountain. "Time for some Superman-style steering!" Mega Man cries out to Rush as they fly to the left side of the airship. Mega Man pushes the left side of the airship with both of his hands. "Give me a good thrust!" Mega Man cries out to Rush. "Ruff! Ruff!" Rush barks out as he increases the thrust of his jets. "One, two, three, go!" Mega Man yells out as he and Rush push at the left side of the airship with all of their combined might. The airship manages to avoid clipping the mountain. "Good boy!" Mega Man says to Rush. "Ruff! Ruff!" Rush barks at Mega Man.

We are then shown Dr. Light and his robots at a local park having a picnic. "It's great to be back on the ground again!" Mega Man says to everyone. Dr. Light says that he deserves to be back on solid ground again for keeping the skies safe. Rush looks up and sees some pigeons flying by. He turns into his jet mode and flies after the pigeons. Mega Man yells out "Rush! I was just getting comfortable down here!" Dr. Light, Eddie, and Roll laugh as they are watching Mega Man trying pathetically to get Rush to come back down to the ground. The episode ends with Mega Man calling out to Rush to come back down.

Running Scared: The Story

So Running Scared is a buddy-cop movie, right?

Well, heck, you might say. If it’s a buddy-cop movie, I may as well not read the plot description.  A by-the-book cop is forced to work with a wild-card cop to catch the criminal and save the day, while learning to respect each other.  The boss gets mad at them, the car gets destroyed, they’re pulled off the case, and solve it anyway, breaking procedure in the process.

Okay, so you’re not wrong about that second half.  Got me there.  Buddy-cop films tend to not have a whole lot of variety when it comes to cliches, but then again, the same could be said of most genres.  And hey, cliches aren’t necessarily bad.

Before you write off Running Scared as just another attempt to cash in on Beverly Hills Cop, though, there are a couple of things to consider: for one thing, there’s no ‘by the book’ cop.  And these two certainly aren’t being forced to work together.  These guys?  They’re good friends.

Let’s take a look at the setup.  (Spoilers below!)

Two undercover Chicago cops, Danny Constanza (Billy Crystal) and Ray Hughes (Gregory Hines), spot two criminals they recognize: drug dealer Julio Gonzales, and one of his associates, ‘Snake’.  Gonzales, recognizing the pair, drives off before the two can investigate further, but before he does so, he gives Snake a briefcase, which Snake runs off with, and I’m sure is totally legitimate.

Danny and Ray pursue Snake to his third-floor apartment, where they threaten him with a search warrant.  And physical harm.

“Listen, Snake, here’s the situation: I have this gun here. Now I am going to take the gun out and I am going to shoot a lot of holes in the door. If you are standing in front of the door, what can I tell ya? Some of the holes are gonna be in you. Ya catching my drift, Snake?”

Snake lets them in.

The pair open his case, and discover what was so important in there: $50,000.

Unfortunately, possessing $50,000 isn’t evidence of wrongdoing in and of itself, and Danny and Ray can’t make an arrest.  Danny, having an idea, steps outside the apartment, onto the balcony, and makes an announcement to anyone in the neighborhood:

“This block is being designated a Neighborhood Watch Area. There’s a guy up here named Snake. He’s wearing garage-sale clothes and the top of his head looks like a parakeet. He also has FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS in small bills in a briefcase. As his neighbors, it is your responsibility to make sure there are no suspicious characters or evil perpetrators lurking in the area who would seek to do him harm. Again, FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS in small bills, tax free, in a briefcase right in this apartment. Which has a really cheeseball lock! You can bust your way in there, bop him on the head, take the money, nobody would know! So it’s UP TO YOU. Thanks a lot, have a good day.”

Snake, realizing the tough spot he has just been put in, punches Ray in the face so they have an excuse to book him.

While the pair take Snake to the station, they discover that the money in the briefcase belonged to Julio Gonzales.  After a few stops, one at a funeral for Danny’s aunt and the other at the scene of an apparent rooftop jump, the pair take the criminal in.

While at the station, Danny’s ex-wife, Anna, comes in to give him some news: she’s getting remarried to a dentist.  During this discussion, a lawyer comes in with a check for $40,000 for Danny, left to him by his deceased aunt.  Danny is left, presumably, with a severe case of mood whiplash, as he still clearly has feelings for Anna, and is now saddled with quite a bit of cash.

At this point, the plot decides to get going.

See, as it turns out, the ‘suicide’ from earlier wasn’t quite what it seemed.  For starters, the victim was a cop, and he didn’t die as a result of the jump.  He was drowned first.  And seeing as it’s pretty hard to die from jumping off a building after you’ve already died from drowning, the captain of the precinct puts Danny and Ray on the case to figure out who did the police officer in.

The pair decide to use Snake to get to the bottom of it, and convince him (via withholding all but $5,000 of his $50,000) to lead them to Gonzales, planning to get enough evidence to arrest him.  Snake agrees, (again, reluctantly) and leads them to the meeting place, a cargo ship.  While there, they discover that Gonzales is in possession of a box of Uzi machine guns.  During the meeting, Snake pretends that he is in danger, and Danny and Ray rush in, only to be surrounded by Gonzales’s men.  Gonzales announces that he plans to be the next godfather of Chicago, and has one of his lackeys shoot Snake.  As the guns turn on Danny and Ray, two detectives, who have been serving undercover in Gonzales’s gang, announce their identities, and after an ensuing gunfight, arrest most of the gang except Gonzales himself.  After another brief chase, Danny and Ray corner and arrest Gonzales and take him in, clearly expecting to be praised.

Back at the precinct, Captain Logan chews the pair of them out for busting the undercover operation and then needing to be rescued like rookies.  He also orders them to go on vacation.

So, they do.

To Key West, Florida, to be exact.

While they’re there, during their Good Times Montage, Danny decides to quit the force, and convinces Ray to retire as well, so they can open a bar in Key West with the money left to him by his aunt.  Ray agrees, and after their vacation, the pair return to Chicago to deliver their 30 day notice.  

They also find out that Julio Gonzales is out of prison on bail.

Enraged, the two vow to not leave the force until after they put Gonzales away for good, and set off to find him, intending to be a little more careful this time.  On top of that, however, Captain Logan has given them a new assignment: training their replacements before they go, the same two undercover officers from the previous bust.

After an incident involving Gonzales getting away again (This time with Danny and Ray’s pants), the duo are left empty handed (aside from Gonzales’s impounded car, which is towed after Ray spray-paints a no-parking zone around it).

This is probably what the captain is talking about when he tells the two cops they’re ‘training’ that he better not catch them doing anything like what Ray and Danny do.

Armed with a new and improved version of the beat-up car they’ve been driving, (including updates like bulletproof windows, which unfortunately do not roll down) Ray and Danny follow a tip from a criminal to where Gonzales is expecting a shipment of cocaine.  When they get there, however, there are already police officers on the scene, who discover a packet of cocaine estimated to be worth $3 million.  The credit for this find goes to the two undercover cops Ray and Danny are training, and the two are further irritated by the fact that Captain Logan is already treating them like they’re retired.  As the pair head off, they are stopped by a drug agent, who has examined the cocaine and determined that it’s an inferior grade, and, in all likelihood, a decoy for the real shipment.

At this news, Danny and Ray immediately head off to try to find the real shipment, and when they see Gonzales meeting with a priest and nun at customs, they assume that the drugs must be in the area.  Gonzales spots them and drives off, leaving the priest and nun at the platform.  Ray and Danny, driving their police car disguised as a taxi, pick the two up and take off after Gonzales, leading to a chase scene on railroad tracks.  In the chase, Gonzales’s vehicle is destroyed by an oncoming train, but he manages to get away.  Danny and Ray are left with the priest and nun, who they suspect of smuggling drugs inside the ceramic containers within the suitcases they carry.

At first, they appear to be wrong.  At the station, when no drugs are found within the containers, Danny and Ray apologize for being mistaken and the priest and nun are released.  However, the two discover that while there are no drugs within the containers, the ceramic containers themselves are made of pressed cocaine.  The partners get a new lead on Gonzales’s location, and head out for a stakeout.

Par the course for this film, this doesn’t go especially well either.  Gonzales has arranged a trash compactor truck to meet them there and destroy their car (with them in it) if they refuse to return his drugs for a bribe, which, of course, they do.

The pair escape through the back window in the nick of time, but they’re too late.  Gonzales is gone.  The next day, Ray and Danny take Gonzales’s impounded car out in search for him, and later that day, Anna comes to Danny’s apartment to give him an insurance policy she found, and the two have an argument about Danny’s immaturity.  

“You can’t be a kid your whole life, you’re gonna have to grow up!”

“Why? I don’t like grown ups.”

After their heated discussion, Anna leaves the building only to be kidnapped by Gonzales’s men, used as a hostage, offering a trade: Anna for the drugs.  If Danny doesn’t comply, Anna will be killed.

Lucky guy that he is, Gonzales has just hit Danny’s Berserk Button.

“If you hurt that lady, you’ll never be dead enough.”

Danny agrees to the trade, and with Ray’s help, takes the drugs from the evidence room as they prepare to take Gonzales down.  The plan shakes down like this:

Danny is going to enter the meeting place, the Illinois State Building, with the drugs while Ray sneaks in through the basement.  The two plan to arrest Gonzales after the trade, rescuing Anna in the process.

Considering the way their plans have been going so far, it’s not far off to bet that things go wrong, and sure enough, it doesn’t quite go according to plan.

The only way up from the basement turns out to be the window washing rig, which compounds Ray’s job quite a bit.  Meanwhile, during the trade, Gonzales orders one of his underlings to open fire on Danny and Anna, both in transparent elevators right next to one another.  Danny orders Anna to drop to the floor and shoots the underling as Ray enters the building, hanging from the window washing rig.  At the same time, the undercover cops the pair are training enter as well, and a shootout ensues, all set against the lovely backdrop of Christmas decorations.

Danny rescues Anna, taking her to safety before returning to the action.  He and Ray take out Gonzales, even though there’s some contention over who fired the fatal shot, Anna and Danny lovingly reunite, and the two cops decide that Chicago still needs them, and not to retire after all.

Thus ends Running Scared, competently wrapping up loose ends with a happy finale for all on the right side of the law (except for maybe the dentist Anna was going to marry).  If I were asking if this was a ‘competent’ ending, I would have nothing more to talk about.

But I’m not.

I’m asking if it’s a good ending.

Or indeed, a good movie in general.

Let’s start with that second one, actually.

Running Scared is chock full of cliches and tropes.  From the angry police chief to the car getting destroyed, it merrily tromps through its plot, checking off traditional buddy-cop story devices one by one, except for the biggie: there is no conflict between the cops themselves.  They are in total agreement in everything from procedure to their personal lives.  There is no ‘real’ arguing, there is no distrust or rivalry.  They are very close friends.

Does one subversion make for a good movie?  No, not by itself.  But the way this film emphasizes that subversion really does elevate it, in my opinion, to something special.

The story?  Not that original.  The setting?  Eh, if you wanted a good look at Chicago, you could just as easily pop in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or The Blues Brothers.  The action?  It’s the ‘80s.  It was everywhere, and there were plenty of movies with more action than is found here.

In the case of Running Scared, the uniqueness of this film really comes from how the characters interact with the story, rather than the story itself.  Specifically Danny, who the film seems to be a little more centered on, especially during that final act.  Which seems kind of odd, considering the fact that on first glance, there really doesn’t seem to be that much character development for him, or anyone at all for that matter.  But on a closer look, it’s a little different than that.

See, the interesting thing about Danny is that his life drives the plot.  It’s his inheritance, his bar,  his ex-wife that’s been kidnapped, and his immaturity that caused the split in the first place.  Ray, as central and important as he is, mostly tags along and helps Danny out.  When it comes to the actual story, it is Danny’s relationship with both Anna and Ray that brings everything together.  It is his believable warm, easy chemistry with both characters that, in my opinion, puts this on a level comparable to, but different than, other buddy-cop films of the day.  

Once again, at first it can seem like there’s no development in the movie, and after all, isn’t character development what can make or break a film?

Absolutely.

It’s not overt, but there is a subtle shift in Danny’s behavior throughout the film as he takes more and more responsibility for his actions, acting, as it were, a little more mature.  While ending the film still largely a Deadpan Snarker Cowboy Cop (much like his partner), the kidnapping of Anna and her words to him before it happened change his attitude for the final act of the film.  He takes the situation completely seriously, arguably for the first time in the movie, and demonstrates to Anna that he can be a grown-up, especially when it concerns people he cares about.  Danny’s mildly Man-Child ways are brought up a few times in the film, about as consistently as the subplot involving his ex-wife who he clearly still cares for, his development is less about him becoming less of a wild-card cop than it is him taking responsibility and taking his job, and his life, a little more seriously.  Is it pointed out?  No, not really.  In fact, you kinda have to squint to see it.  The change is pretty subtle, and it’s a little rushed, as it takes place during the equally rushed last act of the film.  For all of its good points, the movie does have a tad of a pacing problem towards the end.

However, it does make a difference.  At the end of the story, the characters decide not to retire, to continue protecting the city.  That wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying an ending as it is had it not been for the slight changes in the protagonist, notably Danny (whose idea it was in the first place) and his increase in maturity.  Also more satisfying as a result is his reconciliation with Anna, again, not as effective if it wasn’t for the actual display of responsibility.

Back to our questions.

Is Running Scared a good movie, and does it have a good, satisfactory ending?

Very simply: Yes, to both.

Is it great?  No.  It’s by no means a work of art, but it’s not really supposed to be.  It’s supposed to be a funny buddy-cop movie, and at that, it very much succeeds.  It gives us some likable characters, a competent story, and enough chemistry and laughs to more than make up for the heap of (not inherently bad) cliches that fill the script.  In some ways, it’s very much a standard buddy-cop film.  In others, it’s just a little different, making for a combination that sets this film a little apart from the rest.
