It’s Chad’s pick this episode and he first learned of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla from a trailer he saw while watching Sanford and Son and he immediately knew he had to see it, even if he had to walk uphill both ways the three miles to the theater. He is a big fan of The Six Million Dollar Man and thought Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla was the best thing he’d ever seen. Even now, he had a blast watching the movie despite its cheese factor. Bill, a huge kaiju fan, has always liked Mechagodzilla and its Swiss Army knife arsenal of weaponry. As always, Jeff is playing catch up with the rest of the 70s Grue-Crew when it comes to kaiju, but he loved the explosions! They “blowed” up stuff real good! Doc is also a lover of kaiju and monster films and was gaga over the four monsters in this one - the title characters, Anguirus, and King Shisa - and the wrestling moves the monsters utilize. 

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla gets a big thumbs up from the 70s Grue-Crew! (Don’t they all?) The film is currently available for streaming on HBOmax and The Criterion Channel, and on Blu-ray disc in the Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954–1975 Box Set from Criterion.

If you do not know who Showa Video is, I refer you back to my first review of their products. Long story short: bootleg company that releases the Toho Blu-Rays with English subtitles.

Unlike my last review, I can actually comment on video quality  (as I watched Mechagodzilla (1974) as soon as it arrived and previewed the other two). Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla looks stunning in 1080p. There’s hardly a moment where the picture is distorted or unnaturally colored and it fits right at home with my other Showa era BRs. The subtitles, thankfully, are fully-translated as opposed to the Sony DVD’s dubtitles. Already this is an improvement over the out-of-print DVD. Showa Video’s release even includes the International English Dub, so basically it’s completely outclassed my Sony disc in every way.

Now for the topic everyone wants to hear about: special features! The three discs each have a wide variety of special features, with Mechagodzilla (1974) coming out as the victor in my opinion. This disc features an interview with leading lady Reiko Tajima which is unfortunately unsubtitled in Japanese, a pretty cool tour of Okinawa filming locations for the movie, and my favorite, a showcase of surviving (as of 2003, I assume as the feature most likely comes from the Toho DVD of that year) props from the two Showa MG movies. Notable items include both heads of Mechagodzilla (standard head and Control Brain head), the entire bottom half of the MG 75 suit, the King Seesar statue, and the swimming Titanosaurus prop. Like my Mothra vs. Godzilla DVD, there appears to be an option for an audio commentary feature, but I could not get this to work with my disc.

Onto Godzilla vs. Biollante, which is unfortunately a disappointment if you already own the US BR release. However, since I missed out on that (and it goes for 50+ online now), I’m not really upset (although I do have the DVD, which does have these features on it). The video quality is decent, not sure how it compares to the Echo Bridge BR, but it’s quite good. The lack of the English dub, despite it’s quality, is a minus. The special features are still really great, I’ll always give high praise to discs that feature behind-the-scenes footage. And fifty minutes of it is well worth the praise.

Finally, we have Godzilla X Mechagodzilla, only available in America via a forced two-pack with GMK. Video quality is great here, if only for an unaltered Japanese title sequence (showcased here) and no on-screen English titles. The subtitles appear to also be fully translated and not dubtitles too, which is another feature I don’t think appears on the Sony disc. Special features are plentiful, you have at least a half-dozen different advertisements from a teaser trailer to theater ads featuring promotional Hamtaro keychains, and television spots, an awesome tour of the Toho Studios backlot hosted by producer Shogo Tomiyama, another behind-the-scenes documentary, and picture-in-picture storyboards. The only features that I have to subtract points for are the interview with Shinji Nishikawa and the (supposed) audio commentaries. The interview starts off great, but about halfway through, the audio cuts out. I do not know if this is a problem with my player or the disc itself, but it’s a darn shame (even if I couldn’t understand anything being said). The audio commentaries also may-or-may-not work either, I still haven’t found a solution for those.

Final thoughts, this batch of Showa Video Blu-Rays wasn’t as mind-blowingly awesome as the first, but it was still a great treat to get two OOP Godzilla films on Blu-Ray and to have an indivudual release of GXMG, complete with many special features. I definitely am planning on replacing my existing Sony Double-Feature releases with these bootlegs, English dubs be damned.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) - 5.0 stars

Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) - 4.5 stars (Subtitled Behind-the-scenes features and inclusion of the English dub would’ve bumped this to a 5.0)

Godzilla X Mechagodzilla (2002) - 4.6 stars (Fixed audio on the Shinji Nishikawa interview and inclusion of English dub would’ve bumped this to a 5.0)

Kitaro Kosaka Akan Sutradarai Film Anime dari Buku Anak Terkenal Waka Okami wa Shougakusei

Serial buku anak yang populer berjudul Waka Okami wa Shougakusei yang diterbitkan oleh penerbit buku anak Kodansha, Aoi Tori Bunko telah merilis sebuah trailer untuk film anime yang akan menyusul menjadi serial TV anime-nya yang akan tayang tidak lama lagi..

Film baru ini akan digarap oleh Kitaro Kosaka, orang yang berada dibalik film Nasu: Summer in Andalusia dan juga bekerja dalam project film produksi Studio Ghibli. Skenario untuk film ini akan ditulis oleh Reiko Yoshida (A silent Voice, Violet Evergarden).

Kitaro Kosaka sendiri memulai karirnya pada tahun 1979 dengan studio Oh! Production. Dia keluar dari studio tersebut pada tahun 1986 dan menjadi seorang freelancer hingga pada akhirnya bergabung dengan Hayao Miyazaki di Studio Ghibli.

Pada tahu 2003 ia menyutradarai film anime bertema sepeda. Hingga saat ini kurang lebih ia telah menggarap sebanyak 33 film dengan berbagai macam posisi, mulai dari animator hingga sutradara film.

Waka Okami wa Shougakusei menceritakan tentang seorang gadis sekolah dasar bernama Oriko Seki yang kehilangan orang tuanya pada kejadian kecelakaan yang menimpa keduanya. Kemudian ia mengungsi di sebuah penginapan Jepang milik neneknya bernama “Haru no Ya”. Dia tinggal bersama hantu Uribou yang telah diselamatkan oleh gadis tersebut dan membantunya untuk mengurus pelanggan yang berkunjung ke penginapan.

Hiroko Reijo selaku penulis dari novel asalnya mempercayakan pembuatan film ini disutradarai oleh Kitaro Osaka. Menurutnya, Kitaro selalu membuat sebuah karya yang sesuai dengan ekspektasinya dan selalu dapat merealisasikannya sesuai dengan keinginannya.
