Tech Breakdown: What Is a SuperNIC? Get the Inside Scoop!
Tumblr media
The most recent development in the rapidly evolving digital realm is generative AI. A relatively new phrase, SuperNIC, is one of the revolutionary inventions that makes it feasible.
Describe a SuperNIC
On order to accelerate hyperscale AI workloads on Ethernet-based clouds, a new family of network accelerators called SuperNIC was created. With remote direct memory access (RDMA) over converged Ethernet (RoCE) technology, it offers extremely rapid network connectivity for GPU-to-GPU communication, with throughputs of up to 400Gb/s.
SuperNICs incorporate the following special qualities:
Ensuring that data packets are received and processed in the same sequence as they were originally delivered through high-speed packet reordering. This keeps the data flow’s sequential integrity intact.
In order to regulate and prevent congestion in AI networks, advanced congestion management uses network-aware algorithms and real-time telemetry data.
In AI cloud data centers, programmable computation on the input/output (I/O) channel facilitates network architecture adaptation and extension.
Low-profile, power-efficient architecture that effectively handles AI workloads under power-constrained budgets.
Optimization for full-stack AI, encompassing system software, communication libraries, application frameworks, networking, computing, and storage.
Recently, NVIDIA revealed the first SuperNIC in the world designed specifically for AI computing, built on the BlueField-3 networking architecture. It is a component of the NVIDIA Spectrum-X platform, which allows for smooth integration with the Ethernet switch system Spectrum-4.
The NVIDIA Spectrum-4 switch system and BlueField-3 SuperNIC work together to provide an accelerated computing fabric that is optimized for AI applications. Spectrum-X outperforms conventional Ethernet settings by continuously delivering high levels of network efficiency.
Yael Shenhav, vice president of DPU and NIC products at NVIDIA, stated, “In a world where AI is driving the next wave of technological innovation, the BlueField-3 SuperNIC is a vital cog in the machinery.” “SuperNICs are essential components for enabling the future of AI computing because they guarantee that your AI workloads are executed with efficiency and speed.”
The Changing Environment of Networking and AI
Large language models and generative AI are causing a seismic change in the area of artificial intelligence. These potent technologies have opened up new avenues and made it possible for computers to perform new functions.
GPU-accelerated computing plays a critical role in the development of AI by processing massive amounts of data, training huge AI models, and enabling real-time inference. While this increased computing capacity has created opportunities, Ethernet cloud networks have also been put to the test.
The internet’s foundational technology, traditional Ethernet, was designed to link loosely connected applications and provide wide compatibility. The complex computational requirements of contemporary AI workloads, which include quickly transferring large amounts of data, closely linked parallel processing, and unusual communication patterns all of which call for optimal network connectivity were not intended for it.
Basic network interface cards (NICs) were created with interoperability, universal data transfer, and general-purpose computing in mind. They were never intended to handle the special difficulties brought on by the high processing demands of AI applications.
The necessary characteristics and capabilities for effective data transmission, low latency, and the predictable performance required for AI activities are absent from standard NICs. In contrast, SuperNICs are designed specifically for contemporary AI workloads.
Benefits of SuperNICs in AI Computing Environments
Data processing units (DPUs) are capable of high throughput, low latency network connectivity, and many other sophisticated characteristics. DPUs have become more and more common in the field of cloud computing since its launch in 2020, mostly because of their ability to separate, speed up, and offload computation from data center hardware.
SuperNICs and DPUs both have many characteristics and functions in common, however SuperNICs are specially designed to speed up networks for artificial intelligence.
The performance of distributed AI training and inference communication flows is highly dependent on the availability of network capacity. Known for their elegant designs, SuperNICs scale better than DPUs and may provide an astounding 400Gb/s of network bandwidth per GPU.
When GPUs and SuperNICs are matched 1:1 in a system, AI workload efficiency may be greatly increased, resulting in higher productivity and better business outcomes.
SuperNICs are only intended to speed up networking for cloud computing with artificial intelligence. As a result, it uses less processing power than a DPU, which needs a lot of processing power to offload programs from a host CPU.
Less power usage results from the decreased computation needs, which is especially important in systems with up to eight SuperNICs.
One of the SuperNIC’s other unique selling points is its specialized AI networking capabilities. It provides optimal congestion control, adaptive routing, and out-of-order packet handling when tightly connected with an AI-optimized NVIDIA Spectrum-4 switch. Ethernet AI cloud settings are accelerated by these cutting-edge technologies.
Transforming cloud computing with AI
The NVIDIA BlueField-3 SuperNIC is essential for AI-ready infrastructure because of its many advantages.
Maximum efficiency for AI workloads: The BlueField-3 SuperNIC is perfect for AI workloads since it was designed specifically for network-intensive, massively parallel computing. It guarantees bottleneck-free, efficient operation of AI activities.
Performance that is consistent and predictable: The BlueField-3 SuperNIC makes sure that each job and tenant in multi-tenant data centers, where many jobs are executed concurrently, is isolated, predictable, and unaffected by other network operations.
Secure multi-tenant cloud infrastructure: Data centers that handle sensitive data place a high premium on security. High security levels are maintained by the BlueField-3 SuperNIC, allowing different tenants to cohabit with separate data and processing.
Broad network infrastructure: The BlueField-3 SuperNIC is very versatile and can be easily adjusted to meet a wide range of different network infrastructure requirements.
Wide compatibility with server manufacturers: The BlueField-3 SuperNIC integrates easily with the majority of enterprise-class servers without using an excessive amount of power in data centers.

So this is part 2 of this post, if yall wanna give it a read for context.
In this post, I’ll be talking about how Color’s physical disability of having only one eye would influence how he interacts with his special interests in photography and travel.
As well as how his PTSD, autism, chronic fatigue, and separation anxiety from Killer could also affect things.
With one eye, Color might have reduced depth perception, which could make it challenging to gauge distances accurately. He might rely more on autofocus features, practice to enhance his spatial awareness, or use techniques like focus stacking for precise shots.
He might prefer using cameras with electronic viewfinders (EVF) or live view screens rather than optical viewfinders, which could be more challenging to use with one eye. Adjusting camera settings and composing shots via a larger display would be easier.
He might develop unique framing and composition techniques, leveraging his perspective creatively. Color could take extra time to ensure his shots are well-composed, possibly using grid overlays or other aids to help with alignment.
Customizing camera gear to suit his needs, such as using tripods, stabilizers, or remote controls, to help steady the camera and compose shots more comfortably.
He might spend additional time in post-processing to correct any minor misalignments or issues that arise from the reduced depth perception during the shooting process.
For travel, navigating unfamiliar places might require more caution, especially in crowded or complex environments. He might use mobility aids, rely on GPS and mapping apps, or travel with companions to ensure safety.
Color could engage in meticulous planning to minimize unexpected challenges, such as researching accessible routes, accommodations, and transportation options.
Color might use his experiences and perspective to connect with others, sharing how his disability influences his travel and photography, fostering understanding and empathy.
Developing strategies to cope with the physical demands of travel, such as pacing himself, taking regular breaks, and prioritizing destinations or activities that are less physically demanding.
His unique perspective could inspire him to create compelling stories or advocacy pieces about accessibility in travel and photography, raising awareness and inspiring others with disabilities.
Embracing his distinct view of the world, his photography could offer unique perspectives that stand out, turning his perceived limitation into an artistic advantage.
He might become involved in communities focused on accessible travel and photography, sharing tips, experiences, and inspiring others with similar challenges.
Autism and chronic fatigue would likely significantly impact Color’s ability to engage with his special interests in photography and travel.
In photography, chronic fatigue would necessitate careful energy management. Color might plan shorter, more focused photography sessions and prioritize rest to avoid burnout.
Streamlining his workflow, from setting up equipment to post-processing, to conserve energy. This could include using presets in editing software or organizing his gear for easy access.
He could chose photography locations that are easily accessible and require minimal physical exertion. He might also prefer locations close to home or base to reduce travel time and energy expenditure.
He would likely use ightweight equipment to reduce physical strain, possibly investing in high-quality but compact cameras and lenses. He might also use monopods or lightweight tripods for additional support.
Autism can come with sensory sensitivities. Color might choose quieter, less crowded locations for photography and use noise-canceling headphones or other tools to manage sensory overload.
With travel, he’d have to pace himself. Planning travel with built-in downtime to rest and recharge. He might avoid overly ambitious itineraries and allow for flexible scheduling to accommodate his energy levels.
He’d probably chose ccommodations that are comfortable, quiet, and accessible, ensuring he has a safe space to retreat to when needed.
He’d prefer modes of transportation that offer comfort and minimal stress, such as direct flights, train travel, or driving. He might also opt for private or semi-private tours to control the pace and environment.
Keeping up with healthcare needs, including regular check-ups, medication management, and any necessary accommodations. He might also carry a travel health kit tailored to his specific needs.
He’d combine photography with travel in a way that maximizes enjoyment and minimizes strain. For example, he might focus on travel photography during the golden hours (early morning and late afternoon) when conditions are optimal, and the rest of the day can be used for rest.
Creating content that reflects his experiences with autism and chronic fatigue, such as blogs, vlogs, or social media posts. This can help raise awareness and provide valuable insights to others with similar challenges.
Engaging with communities of autistic travelers and photographers to share experiences, tips, and support. This can provide a sense of camaraderie and practical advice tailored to his needs.
Establishing routines that provide predictability and reduce stress. This might include having a consistent photography and travel routine, preparing for trips well in advance, and creating checklists.
Practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques to manage stress and sensory overload. This can help maintain focus and calm, particularly in challenging environments.
Utilizing assistive technologies, such as apps for energy tracking, sensory-friendly gear, or digital tools that aid in planning and organization.
Color’s PTSD from solitary confinement and isolation in the Void, combined with his separation anxiety towards Killer, can create a complex situation that both challenges and shapes his engagement in traveling and photography.
Color’s need to stay on the move due to PTSD makes traveling appealing, as it provides a sense of freedom and escape from confinement. However, this constant movement could also become exhausting and anxiety-inducing if it lacks purpose or stability.
His separation anxiety towards Killer might lead him to seek Killer’s company while traveling. Traveling with Killer could provide a sense of security and reduce his anxiety, but it also means his travel plans would need to align with Killer’s availability and willingness to join him.
Color might need to carefully plan his travels to ensure he has safe and familiar places to stay, reducing the unpredictability that could trigger his PTSD. Having a structured itinerary could help him feel more in control and less anxious.
Traveling to new and unfamiliar places might sometimes trigger memories of his isolation, especially if he encounters situations that remind him of the Void. He would need to find a balance between exploring new places and ensuring his mental well-being.
Photography could serve as a therapeutic outlet, allowing Color to process and express his emotions through capturing images. It might help him make sense of his experiences and provide a way to externalize his trauma.
Color might be drawn to photographing subjects that reflect his internal state or provide a sense of solace. He could focus on themes like freedom, movement, and connection, finding meaning and healing in his work.
Having Killer around while engaging in photography could provide comfort and reduce his anxiety. Killer might even become a frequent subject in Color’s photos, symbolizing their bond and mutual support.
Color might need to develop strategies to manage his anxiety while photographing, such as taking breaks, grounding exercises, or having a trusted companion like Killer present. This would help him stay focused and engaged in his special interest.
The mutual separation anxiety between Color and Killer could strengthen their bond, as they rely on each other for emotional support. This bond could provide Color with the stability he needs to engage in his interests.
Color would need to balance his need for movement and exploration with Killer’s needs and limitations. They might develop a mutual understanding and compromise, ensuring both their well-being while pursuing their interests.
Color might prefer traveling to places where he can easily find comfort and familiarity, such as visiting friends or known locations. This reduces the stress of the unknown and helps him stay grounded.
Establishing routines or rituals while traveling and photographing can provide a sense of stability. For example, always starting the day with a specific activity or having regular check-ins with Killer can help Color manage his anxiety.
They might have frequent phone calls if Killer ever can’t join Color on his travels, at particular times of the day.
I can see Color sticking to this routine at the exact time and getting anxious and worried if Killer doesn’t call or pick up, which is likely to happen at some point simply because he has memory issues and sticking to routine is hard for him. But Color, at least for a bit, is likely to assume the worse.
Color might also keep a photograph of him and all his friends close by on his person. (I also like to think that Delta made his camera, he keeps some of Beta’s drawings with him, and also he’s memorized the recipe for Epic’s chocolate cookies.)
If he and Killer have already had their wedding by this point, he’d likely keep his ring close and near. Perhaps kissing it before bed, and fidgeting with it becomes a new comforting stim.
Over time, engaging in his special interests despite his PTSD and anxiety can help Color build resilience. Each successful trip or photography session can boost his confidence and reinforce his ability to cope with challenges.
Color might find deeper meaning in his travels and photography by using them as tools for healing and connection. Documenting his journey and sharing it with others can create a sense of purpose and community.

♡ lee jeno x male reader // nsfw
Tumblr media
the hardest part of your day was waiting for jeno to get home.
you couldn’t stand it, how needy you were for him. the idol had an effect over you that you couldn’t explain, the older male invading a territory of want in your heart no one else had been able to access. swiping through pictures, videos, and snaps of your boyfriend while he was away at practice all day only had you throbbing in your boxers at the mere thought of when you could finally get your hands on him.
the blaring tv before you did little to distract you from your pitiful state. you had no idea what made him so special, but you were simply a starved man that only the luscious lips of lee jeno could satiate.
so it was no shocker that as soon as he stepped through the door of your place that your seat on the couch was vacated and you were all over him. the poor boy could only manage a “babe, i’m home-” before your hungry hands lowered his jaw to connect your lips.
so it was no shocker that as soon as he stepped through the door of your place that your seat on the couch was vacated and you were all over him. the poor boy could only manage a “babe, i’m home-” before your hungry hands lowered his jaw to connect your lips.
sighs of contentment escaped the both of you as you sat with plush mouths drinking each other in, his large hands running up and down your sides. your hands journeyed their way around his waist, feeling his sleeveless shirt cling to his firm torso through a thin sheen of sweat acquired from practice.
“fuck, i’ve missed you.” you could only mutter through kisses as jeno backed you up to the very couch you were sat on for hours prior.
jeno giggled at your needy tone as you both sat down, not wasting another second in reattaching your lips. his tongue slipped into your mouth meeting no resistance, a low groan ripping from your throat. he tasted amazing, as always, and it only caused more arousal to pool in your core, a boner rising to prominence under your shorts.
you moaned into his mouth louder as the kisses intensified, overwhelming you with pleasure from his tongue alone. your fingers raked through his hair before sliding down to grab onto his shoulders, the roundness of his toned muscles feeling like heaven under your palms. your hold slid down to feel his biceps, before snaking back up and sliding underneath the sleeveless holes of his shirt to glide along his back.
it was jeno’s turn to moan into your open-mouthed kiss, leaning more of his body weight on you as your touch invaded beneath his shirt and rose goosebumps among his smooth skin. jeno blindly reached his arm towards the coffee table to fumble around for the remote, never disconnecting your lips while he flicked the tv off, opting to hear the sounds of your makeout. it turned him on so much more.
“my cutie boy.” he teased leaning back as you desperately scrambled into his lap. you didn’t even have it in you to cringe like you usually would at the pet name before you were reattached like magnets, him happily swallowing your whimper as you ground your bulges together.
“please,” you practically begged for no reason in between the fury of sloppy kisses. jeno smirked against your lips before his delicate but strong hands grabbed hold of your thighs underneath both seams of your shorts, pushing you onto your back on the couch cushions.
within seconds both of your bottoms were discarded and his larger than average length had entered you at a slow pace, causing your eyes to roll back from the taxing but pleasurable stretch. the fire in the pit of your stomach that roared jeno’s name felt a satisfied sizzle as he rocked his hips gently but deliciously in and out of you. he smiled down at your already fucked out expression before planting an assault of pillowy kisses along your neck and collarbone, his talented tongue making another appearance to ease the steam of your hot skin.
you held on to jeno tightly, thankful for his presence and the love he showed you. with your legs clinging to his long torso and head thrown back in a daze, you could never think of a comfier position than this.

So like, there's some really shitty video that this toy saw a while back about QoL mods in Terraria and how if you install all of them and then crank all of their settings up to the maximum, then the game basically plays itself. The whole video was weirdly hostile and vindictive and effectively just made fun of the concept of QoL features/mods as a whole. But it stuck in this toy's mind, not because the video itself holds any value, but because the core topic of how quality of life & accessibility features have a tangible impact on a game's design is really interesting and nobody talks about it with any kind of nuance.
So like, Terraria is obviously a very different game from what it used to be. But all of the raw content (hardmode, bosses, biomes, weapons, NPCs, etc.) that always gets the spotlight in updates only makes up a relatively-small portion of that outside of, like, the tinkerer’s workshop from 1.1, and damage classes being added in 1.0.6, both being relatively-early additions. The plethora of things that were changed/added to make the game look nicer also aren't the core thing responsible, obviously. So what is the biggest reason modern Terraria feels so alien when compared to 1.0.X versions, or even 1.1?
It's the quality of life features. Inventory management got exponentially easier/more efficient, you have a minimap at all times, smart cursor lets you expend far less effort mining and dealing with backwalls, there are special equipment slots for grappling hooks and light pets, grappling hooks are bound to a hotkey instead of being an item that you need to manually select and use, you can use items directly from your inventory instead of needing to place them in your hotbar and then select that hotbar slot, you automatically walk up 1-block inclines and open/close doors as you walk through them, there’s a plethora of features to make getting around the world trivial, the start of the game moves way faster due to the player getting access to better equipment faster, block-swapping exists… This toy posits that this is all why Terraria feels like a fundamentally different game. In old versions, it felt like you had to fight tooth and nail to get anything accomplished, but nowadays, everything feels all buttery-smooth. The main friction you encounter in progressing through the game is with boss fights, as Re-Logic obviously intends.
Now, obviously, it would be insane and stupid to claim that Terraria is a worse game, right now, than it was all the way back in the 1.0.X era, and it would be even stupider to claim that it’s worse because it has QoL features. However, this toy does not believe that every single QoL feature added to the game was inherently objectively positive or correct from the game's inception. Rather, they were natural, smart conclusions for Re-Logic to come to with the direction they decided to take the game in as it continued development. But this was not the only direction Terraria’s development could have taken.
There’s a very unique feeling to old-ass Terraria versions, and it sucks that tracking down and playing these versions is so goddamn hard. You only ever have a vague idea of where you are because there’s no map to use as reference so you’re heavily encouraged to keep most of your stuff on the surface, and to build infrastructure to connect important things underground/in the sky so you don’t get lost. Everything is so unwieldy that building a simple house and making it look remotely nice feels like a herculean effort, enemies kick your ass way harder earlygame due to decent gear being much harder to access, and there’s a lot more gravity to the choices you make in what gear you use, because it’s a lot harder to hot-swap your armor and accessories when you're not actually at your base, which is harder to get to/from due to the world being far more difficult to navigate, as a whole.
This all leads to an exponentially slower game than modern-day Terraria is, where every single thing you do needs to be deliberate and well-thought-out, and everything takes a much longer time to do. This toy remembers spending weeks as a kid building housing for the meager number of NPCs that were in the game back then, alongside farms for all of the potion-making herbs and a big obsidian generator, and all of that could be accomplished in a single play session in 1.4.X.
There is a universe in which Terraria saw minimal QoL updates and instead leaned really hard into this direction, making a slow, exploratory game where the player’s power level very slowly increments upwards and you’re encouraged to build largescale infrastructure rather than the (relatively) fast-paced boss rush where your power balloons out of control immediately and your infrastructure is a fast-travel teleportation network that takes minimal effort to set up that the game currently is, and that version of the game would not have been wrong, inherently. It would’ve been more niche, for sure, but it wouldn’t have necessarily been bad, or even worse than the current game is.
This is what makes this toy sad that old Terraria versions are so difficult to get ahold of, as well as what fascinates it so much about the retro Minecraft community. Speaking of, let’s switch gears and talk about Minecraft for a bit.
Minecraft, as it’s sure most of the people reading this are well-aware, has recently been having something of a renaissance in its retro community, the people who prefer alpha and/or beta versions of the game to the modern game. A handful of complete overhaul mods have come out for these versions (notably, Better Than Adventure and ReIndev) that put interesting spins on the game’s design, basically asking the question, “What if Mojang decided on a different direction for Minecraft to take from this point in time?”
A lot of these mods cast aside the instant-gratification convenience and linear progression of modern Minecraft in favor of slower-paced, more survival-ey gameplay, placing more emphasis on the act of exploring your world and gathering resources as the core gameplay loop as opposed to… Well, modern Minecraft really doesn’t have much of a core gameplay loop to speak of, and that’s sort of the problem, now isn’t it? This toy doesn’t want to get too far into all of this, though, as its thoughts on Minecraft’s game design are not the focus of this essay. Rather, it wants to put the spotlight onto Minecraft’s community.
An ever-increasing number of people have been growing more and more critical of Minecraft over the last 5 or so years. It’s obviously always had its detractors, but in recent time, there have been more of them that have gotten more vocal, and it’s become pretty normal to have the take that Minecraft has been getting worse lately. And a big culprit that people keep pointing to is QoL. One of the most common criticisms of Minecraft online is that quality of life features have made it way too easy to trivialize the process of blasting through the game’s content, getting obnoxiously overpowered enchanted diamond (or netherite) gear, reaching the End, and getting access to elytra and shulker boxes.
Despite both being excessively popular games that have been made far easier through their QoL changes and overall polish, that have both been in constant development for over a decade at this point, the critical responses to those features in Terraria and Minecraft could not be more different. This is amusing, and gets at something deeper with regards to game design that this toy doesn’t know it’s ever heard anyone actually say: Quality of life features are fantastic tools for reducing the noise that gets in the way of a game’s vision, but when you add them haphazardly and/or with no real vision for what you want your game to be in the end, you can very easily wind up accidentally removing a large portion of what could’ve otherwise become compelling parts of your gameplay loop. They need to be used intelligently, or they can, in fact, harm your game and make a significant contingent of your playerbase enjoy it less.

If it's okay, basement/sleepover themed front room?
sure is! this is a good way to get us back in the game pfft so don’t even sweat it :] -🌳
Basement / Sleepover Themed Front Room
Day Mode
During the day, this fronting room is a warm and shockingly spacious location despite how cozy everything feels. Pillows, blankets, and squishy stuffed animals litter the floor just about everywhere you step. Some pillows and blankets have been stolen away to a corner to make a comfortable nook for the less-social alters. Blankets serve as the roof and ceiling of this place, illuminated by strings of fairy lights and small glowing motes of sunshine streaming in from somewhere beyond the front room. If you put your head against the walls and listen close, you can sometimes make out idle conversation of memories that linger outside the bounds of headspace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources :: here, here, and here!
A large projector screen propped up in the front part of this room serves as a window to the outside world. This projector plays what is currently going on as well as providing subtitles for alters who are hard of hearing. Switching the subtitles on is surprisingly easy. The in-system subtitles can be finicky, lag a few seconds behind speech, and can sometimes get things wrong. Even still, alters frequently comment on how they give a nostalgic feeling similar to captions on older televisions.
Bodily actions and movements are controlled through use of the laptop computer connected to the projector. This laptop has a special switch on the side, making it able to change forms if needed. It is most often turned into a TV remote, but other forms may also be used.
Exiting the front room is as easy as walking out of the fort’s blanket flaps. Simple and easy!

Night Mode
You may be thinking “ah, this sort of fronting room can’t possibly be comfortable at night with all of these lights!” Not to worry! This fronting room has the ability to change its appearance based on the time of day. While it is well-lit and comfortable during the day, it becomes much calmer at night. Fairy lights and sunbeams are replaced with soothing swirling galaxy lights that cover the walls and roof in mesmerizing patterns. Blankets and pillows are automatically placed into pairs to create beds for those who linger near front or fall asleep mid-fronting.
The large projector screen is traded out for a smaller television that can be adjusted brighter or lower as needed. All other functions of the projector remain the same: subtitles, the ability to switch forms, and the familiarity of a laptop resting on your knees. One thing that does change is the room’s appearance. Rather than only being a blanket fort, there is also a small wooded area outside of the fort styled like a larger basement. It contains a comfortable couch to sit upon, an armchair, a side table lamp, and an ottoman on which to kick up your feet. This is perfect for alters who prefer to work on their own for system management during the night. Some folks claim there is an adjacent room for late night snacking but not everyone seems to be able to access this. Then again, it may be just a dream…

honestly i think a lot of us gays feel like that about marriage in my experience. like of course we want the right to marriage, but it's common to not really care about it because of the baggage and history of it.
i feel like dan for sure, i just don't see a wedding as a necessity, i just want a commited life partner :)
(marriage talk)
speaking as a queer that will probably never get married but thinks the option to legal access is vital: i get it! i bet dan's relationship to marriage as a concept is very complicated in a number of ways, both personal and political (again, hoo boy, do i get it). that dan wants to make sure everyone understands that he doesn't want to get married or believes in soulmates but manages to still convey that it's not remotely because of his connection to phil for either of those stances...it's one of my favorite things, honestly

The Indigenous Voice Referendum Australia 2023
Floored and devastated
repulsed at the racist selfishness of the no voters
It had NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM.
This is NOT who we are
Although it's a comforting narrative that no voters and conservatives are dying out - and will gradually have less and less pull
Firstly - It's too gradual to just wait it out
And Secondly- It's foolish to think that's only where these no votes are coming from
Younger less educated people are part of this too
Ignorant and arrogant - and selfish- that's what less education translates to.
This highlights, more than ever, how important it is to have strict policies in place legally for managing misinformation, fear mongering and propaganda spreading
We need laws about media monopolies and restricting or banning them altogether
Because one agenda from a multimillion dollar media monopoly cannot have majority access to inform a whole country. Especially because they were intentionally running interference with the simplest truth - they threw everything at it - spreading misinformation, blatant repulsive, violent lies - totally made up lies, not even remotely connected to what was being proposed. It's heartbreaking they could invent such lies and then spread those repulsive invented lies so fully and have people believe them.
And less educated people are always more vulnerable to propaganda: they believe hatred without a second thought. They don't fact check. They don't research. They don't make sure. Any excuse to flaunt their selfish racist self interest, against anyone else who might actually be more vulnerable, worse off.
However, That's the thing about this referendum - IT WASNT "US AGAINST THEM"
It was just : do we all agree that indigenous Australians should get to share information and advice with the government about how best to provide the care and facilities we already provide to them. So they work. Because they haven't been. So it would be a good use of money and then we can achieve permanent results and solutions for those issues and then move on, and do different things with that money. To actually move forward with this and not be stuck in stasis with things not improving.
That was literally all it was
It still is an issue now.
Don't loose hope
I'm still proud of all of the Yes voters- there were a good amount of us - and we will continue to turn the tide from ignorance and misinformation to the truth.
We've got to keep going 💪🏻 🙌🏻 👏🏻 🙏🏻
And now we have a more accurate idea of how to do that , and what needs to be fixed with people's understanding of this in our country. We can use this information to succeed
Ironically - doing exactly what the referendum was about : getting more accurate information to better help vulnerable communities of indigenous Australia.
But apparently, we've got to deal with the misinformed tantrum havers first - they make everything an "us against them" even when it literally wasn't. It doesn't affect anyone else. It could only have been positive. They make every issue an "us against them " even when it has literally nothing to do with them, because everything's a tantrum if it's not about them.
We've got accurate information now - just not about the people we were expecting : we know how to combat the racist minformation spreaders, and those who believed them.
What we need is :
Real limits and legal consequences on misinformation spreading, fear mongering and propaganda
Real limits on media monopolies and restrictions from letting them operate the way they do.
AND we do have to continue to combat this misinformation and propaganda whenever it is paraded near us. Respond with the truth, and make sure you ALWAYS RESPOND.
Don't let them think they're right.
Respond simply and calmly with the truth.
I'm sorry we have to do this but we do.
I don't want to be anywhere near those people, but if they identify themselves- we have to respond.
Respond and correct them.
Their idiocy can not and does not rewrite the truth. We are right and the truth of what this is, always was and what we need to do still exists
A few sources to begin to understand this:
A breakdown of who voted what where
Interpreting these results properly - this is well worth a read
I am looking forward to seeing the full count when it's ready. Make sure to look at those things - from Official sources.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO VOTED YES
I stand proudly with you on the side of truth. Empathy. Morality. Justice
We have a more accurate idea of what's going on now: let's get to work
Also thank you to MC HAMMER for supporting and encouraging and campaigning for people to vote yes. That was lovely.
It really was a very simple thing - the truth is still the truth and we will succeed
Love and strength to us all
By goodness we need it
Xxxx🤍🖤🧡❤🤍🖤🧡❤💗💖💜💕💕💓💗
My heart was so full when I voted yes - it's an obvious yes
And it still is
Because YES is the truth
It is what is needed.
Still.
And we will achieve it xxxxx

The Lines We Cross: Epilogue
--------------------------------------------------
Living on.
--------------------------------------------------
“…States it has the resources to remove the body, questions still revolve around what would be done with it afterwards. Several countries have attempted to lay claim to the remains; the president of Egypt recently announced that ancient documents have been found tracing Clockwerk’s heritage back to them, although these documents have not been presented publicly. Meanwhile, negotiations with the Russian government for complete access to Krakarov has remained a constant barrier to Interpol’s ongoing investigation into the former crime leader’s activities…”
A single click of a button ended the news broadcast and turned off the TV, leaving the room in sudden silence. Inspector Fox tossed the remote on her desk with a sigh.
It had been two months since that night in the volcano. Two months since Interpol had showed up expecting a rescue and instead found their lost inspector waiting patiently by the corpse of the leader of the Fiendish Five. Two months since she had returned to Paris HQ as a hero, with superiors praising her and coworkers clamoring to work with her and Barkley expressing an emotion other than anger or stress every time he saw her. Two months of clearing loose ends and working through red tape and finalizing paperwork in order to close out a decades-long case so she could finally move to a new one.
Two months since Sly Cooper.
Every morning, the fox woke up before the sun rose and got ready for work in the same efficient routine that she’d kept for the entire time she’d been on the force. Since Krakarov, however, there had been a single change to this routine that she now did before anything else. Each and every morning, the moment she had opened her eyes, she now grabbed her phone and checked its messages instead of waiting until she was already out the door.
Each and every morning, the one number she hoped to see but never dared contact remained distant.
Today, however, was different. Because although there was no message or call or anything other than radio silence from the person she was waiting for, there was something big waiting for her at work.
Jing King had been declared innocent, and today she was finally to be released from custody.
Carmelita hadn’t seen much of the panda since Kunlun. She had been called in to testify at one of her many trials, where she had stated the facts as she’d witnessed them – that Jing had helped her find the Panda King and that she hadn’t found any evidence of her participating in her father’s crimes – without so much as glancing the girl’s way. As much as she wanted to plead for Jing’s sake, it wouldn’t have made sense for her to do so; as far as the rest of the world was concerned, Inspector Fox and Jing King were strangers with absolutely nothing connecting them.
And so, the fox had kept her nose out of it on a professional level and tuned into updates on it on every other level. Today, all she could think about was that girl and the long, private conversation they’d had. Holing herself up in her office under the pretense of getting work done until the designated time for Jing’s release was the only thing her distracted thoughts could manage.
At 3:58 PM right on the dot, she finally came out of isolation and followed a group of coworkers who were also heading out to watch the procession. Normally, such an occurrence didn’t draw much attention, but the Panda King’s daughter and her supposed innocence had been the main subject of gossip for weeks. At the very least, the crowd of curious, wary officers waiting and watching for Jing’s release provided a good enough excuse for Inspector Fox to be there too.
As people milled about in the lobby and pretended to be doing anything except loitering, Carmelita found herself left alone in HQ’s public space for the first time since her triumphant return. She was grateful for the little time she had before someone inevitably approached her, as they always did nowadays.
Which happened, as expected – but by someone very surprising.
“It’s been remarkably difficult to catch you alone lately, my dear. You seem to have quite the reputation now.”
The Contessa’s calm, rich voice filtered in from her left side. The fox turned to look at her in surprise.
“Contessa! How long have you been in Paris? I hadn’t heard anything about you visiting us here.”
“I just arrived this morning. Impeccable timing for such a popular event, it seems.” Her dark red eyes drifted slowly yet sharply across the large scattering of people in the room. “What happens to be the occasion for so many officers to be shirking their duties this afternoon?”
“Jing King is being released today. She’s –”
“Ah, yes, I’ve heard of her. It’s a pity she’s being let out of custody so prematurely; I would have expected a more thorough investigation for someone so closely tied to a member of the Fiendish Five.” The spider finally glanced her way, expression unreadable. “What do you think?”
“It’s not up to me.”
“No, but surely it stings at least a little bit. For them to dismiss your hard work in bringing all these criminals to justice with such a hasty declaration of innocence.”
A lifetime ago, Carmelita would have wholeheartedly agreed with more than a little righteous frustration. Now, instead, she simply shook her head and hoped her grimace would be taken at face value.
“I made my testimony, and the judges made their decision. It’s not my place to question that. If they say she’s innocent, then she’s innocent.”
“Hm...” The Contessa looked back out towards the rest of the lobby. “Barkley was right – you have changed since this case.”
Before the inspector could ask what she meant by that, a hush fell over the room as one of the elevators touched down, and a group of armed guards stepped through its open doors with a familiar panda between them. Jing King looked exhausted, but she kept her head high and her stride purposeful despite the many eyes on her. She did not even glance Carmelita’s way as her procession passed by.
She just kept walking, silent and stoic and the spitting image of her notorious father, until they were out the door and out of the building entirely.
Immediately, everyone began whispering among themselves about the sight. Some were angry at Jing’s declared innocence, as the Contessa had expected Inspector Fox to be. Others sounded disappointed in the girl’s lack of reaction to her onlookers, with snide comments about how long her façade would last against the paparazzi waiting outside. A rare few expressed sympathy, drowned out by their more worked-up associates.
Carmelita didn’t contribute to any of these conversations. She stared at the front doors, chewing her lip and wondering how conspicuous it would look to head out after them. Questions burned in her mind – how Jing was holding up; what she was going to do now that everything she knew had changed; if she had somehow been in contact with her surrogate brother despite the constant monitoring.
If she knew where he was. If she knew whether he was okay.
Beside her, the Contessa was also watching the doors. She let out a quiet, indecipherable hum, and said something under her breath.
“I wonder how much she knows about him.”
It was nearly inaudible; the fox only picked it up after so much time with a partner whose natural speaking voice was often just shy of a whisper. She turned to her superior with a raised eyebrow.
“Sorry, what was that?”
“Nothing, my dear. Just pondering out loud.” The spider patted her shoulder in an almost maternal gesture, then began to walk away. “It was lovely to see you, as always. I look forward to what other great feats you achieve in the future.”
Within seconds she was gone, and Carmelita was left wondering what she’d just missed.
The rest of the day passed without incident. She went home, thinking about Jing King and her father and the rest of the Fiendish Five until she couldn’t any longer, then fell into an uneasy sleep over worries she couldn’t name. When she woke up the next morning, the inspector diligently checked her phone, hoping that Jing’s release would be a catalyst for…something. Anything. Coming up blank was a sharp pang of disappointment.
So she went back to work, and then came home, and went and came and went and came, and never stopped waiting for a message that she was beginning to think might never arrive.
Until a week later when a buzz from her nightstand woke her up in the middle of the night. The fox groggily reached for her phone, angrily squinting at the name of whomever had dared wake her up. All anger fled immediately at the sight of a familiar nickname staring back.
It wasn’t so much of a proper text as it was an invitation – a single address and nothing else. But that was all that was needed for her to fly out of bed and start making travel plans.
Within a few short days, armed with an obscene amount of paid vacation time and an unassuming camera SD card clutched tightly in one hand, Carmelita stared up at the blocky, faded lettering of a tiny store in Nebraska. The chime of the bell over the doorframe was a welcome one as she stepped inside, as were the two employees sitting behind the desk.
“Inspector Fox!” Bentley exclaimed, nearly falling off his chair at the sight of her. There was a solid sheen of sweat across his forehead despite the cool interior. “What are you – I mean, uh, how c-can I help you today?”
Beside him, Murray stared at the fox with wide eyes and his mouth agape. Words seemed to be failing him the longer they looked at each other; his smaller coworker was not faring much better.
“It’s such a surprise to see you – I mean, n-not that it’s not great, too! Just! It’s just a surprise, is all I mean, um –”
“It’s okay, guys. I called her here.”
All three gazes snapped towards the back doorway, where a familiar masked face stepped through with a set of boxes in his hands. He wore the same uniformed shirt as the other two did, albeit with a certain blue and gold hoodie tied around his waist. Piercing brown eyes that were no longer quite so tired met the inspector’s own.
He gave her a tentative, genuine smile.
“Hey, Carmelita.”
Carmelita couldn’t help but laugh as she smiled back.
“Hey there, Ringtail.”

A/N: We did it. I almost can't believe it. Over a year and a half of planning, writing, and agonizing over this thing that started as a throwaway what-if scene written on a whim. Mags, if you're reading this, it's all your fault <3
Before anyone asks: no, I don't have any plans to cover the other games in this AU. If I ever do, it will be a LONG time from now because this took a lot out of me and I want to do some smaller, more manageable projects first. I'm not done with TLWC by a long-shot, though, as I still plan to finish the prequel fic and will no doubt add some one-shots as inspiration hits.
Thank you all for sticking with me and my story through all the highs, lows, and unexpected hiatuses. I'm not exaggerating when I say I never expected a response like this from so many people. Special thanks to @saikonohero and @brainsforbreakfastt for their incredible fanart and fanfic. I will legitimately treasure them forever.
That's it from me, folks. Hope you all have a good one!

Actual episode 70 discussion before I vanish back into the aether to do coursework:
Obligatory meta bit: I’m in the process of reading Interaction Ritual Chains for a draft thesis chapter (which I need to be writing now) and just happened to be halfway through reading the section on remote/virtual rituals when the episode dropped. The book includes stuff like sports events and concerts as rituals, defined as community-building events where people share an experience and get meaningful symbols and stories out of it. But it has a whole section on why this needs to be in-person. I’ve never really done live premieres before because my fandoms tended to be old, but I’ve now got participation observation data to disprove that - it’s definitely a shared experience for the fan community, and we have plenty of stories. Fandom is folk culture!
The appearance of cam-ghosts and Plunger’s interaction with the secret agent was very cool as I love the sufficiently advanced tech is indistinguishable from the supernatural” trope. The camghosts could have been hallucinations, but there was one peeking around a corner much earlier in the episode. I suspect that there’s some kind of remote connection/Alliance network going on (they’re able to share and broadcast footage, after all, even if they need to use tablets for long range comms), so these could be virtual encounters through the secret agent hacking or otherwise accessing Plunger’s brain - like he’s able to get into the skibidi computer to taunt the scientist. But why (other than exposition and dramatic effect)? Is he trolling because their death is part of his scheme (likely imho), or is he just an incorrigible dick who can’t say “good job” without being sinister?
Transmission error/recording error: is the secret agent signal jamming? And what was that stealth mode? Is it related to the secret agent and the camghosts? Probably.
Unless our two ex-main characters are fixed or downloaded (which I doubt but I did notice that the the tagline was “someone”, which is usually singular), ST is doing Anyone Can Die. If this was being approached as a lolrandom meme thing, that wouldn’t be surprising, and that has been the tone of much of the series so far. However, it’s ascended to the point that there’s an actual Skibidi Toilet store. The longevity of comparable meme horror/sci-fi series has seemed to rely on people getting attached to iconic characters, so I wonder if there’s a plan for avoiding Too Bleak, Stopped Caring? My guess is having the elites and titans consistent throughout the plot, but DFB may also be an incorrigible dick and kill everyone. I am a sucker for dramatic deaths though, so I can probably put up with it (just about, did that speaker squeak as they were dying? Oh no ;_;).
On the subject of trolls, one way of interpreting Titan Speaker putting out the fire before completely flattening the scientist was that they wanted to kill them themself, another interpretation was that they were fucking with the scientist by pretending they’d show mercy. Either way, A+++ revenge!
Polycephaly is also super interesting as they don’t really seem to be the TV equivalent of the others factions’ big combat units. There’s only one of them, they can fuck around with teleportation-stuff (nanites? weird science particles?) and swap out their extra bits. They might have a role that’s unique to the TV faction, I already wondered if it’s something like managing TV communications or information flows, and now I think that could include something to do with teleportation too. Maybe running the teleportation-navigation software? In the Dune series, there’s heavily mutated Guild Navigators who guide faster-than-light spaceships and to make sure no one crashes into a planet, and Warhammer 40k has a similar Navigator role to guide space traffic through the Warp using psychic beacons.

that info on how adhd can show up in gallifreyans was really interesting! on a slightly related note, is it possible for a time lord to have bipolar disorder? and if so, how does/would it be different compared to a human?
Can Time Lords have bipolar disorder?
Yep. A lot of human mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder, can manifest in Gallifreyans. However, there are some key differences in how bipolar disorder might show itself.
⚡Manic Phases in Time Lords
1. 🧠 Enhanced Cognitive Abilities:
Heightened Creativity and Energy: During manic phases, a Time Lord's cognitive functions might become extremely heightened, allowing them to solve complex problems, invent new technologies, or devise intricate plans at a superhuman pace.
Risk-Taking Behaviours: Time Lords might exhibit extreme risk-taking behaviours during manic episodes, like engaging in dangerous time travel experiments or meddling in significant historical events without considering cause and effect.
Telepathic Sensitivity: During manic phases, their telepathic connections might become more intense and overwhelming.
2. 💪 Physical Resilience:
Reduced Need for Rest: The manic phase could significantly reduce a Time Lord's need for rest, allowing them to function at high activity levels for extended periods. This is due to their advanced physiology and the ability to temporarily bypass certain biological needs.
Physical Agility: Their increased energy levels might enhance their physical agility, making them more adept at combat, evasion, or other physically demanding tasks, y'know, like running. It might even speed up healing, too.
🌧️ Depressive Phases in Time Lords
1. 😟 Deep Emotional Lows:
Profound Sadness: Depressive episodes might be deeply intense, causing the Time Lord to experience profound sadness, guilt, or hopelessness. This could be exacerbated by their long lifespans and the weight of all those screwy memories.
Isolation: Time Lords might isolate themselves during depressive phases, retreating to remote corners of the universe or their TARDIS to avoid interaction with others.
2. 💥 Cognitive and Physical Impact:
Slowed Thought Processes: Depressive episodes might slow their usually rapid thought processes, making it difficult to concentrate, make decisions, or maintain their typically high level of cognitive function.
Physical Fatigue: Despite their advanced physiology, Time Lords might still experience physical fatigue during depressive phases, leading to a reduction in their usual activity levels and overall effectiveness.
Telepathic Sensitivity: They might withdraw from telepathic communication altogether, essentially numbing their more social sense.
🌀 Impact of Regeneration
1. 🧠 Resetting Mental State:
Temporary Relief: Regeneration might provide temporary relief from the symptoms of bipolar disorder by resetting the Time Lord's mental state. However, the core aspects of the disorder could persist across regenerations.
Variation in Symptoms: Each regeneration might bring about different manifestations of bipolar disorder, with some incarnations experiencing more pronounced manic phases while others might suffer more from depressive episodes.
2. 🧬 Genetic and Psychological Factors:
Inherited Traits: Bipolar disorder might be influenced by both genetic and psychological factors inherent to the Time Lord. The disorder could be a part of their core personality, affecting them in every incarnation.
Psychological Trauma: Past traumas and experiences, particularly those involving significant losses or moral dilemmas, might exacerbate bipolar symptoms, making it a recurring issue across regenerations.
🧩 Coping Mechanisms and Treatments
1. 👨‍⚕️ Advanced Medical Interventions:
Tailored Treatments: Time Lords have access to advanced medical technologies and treatments that could help manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder. These treatments might include neural stabilisers, mood regulators, or even targeted genetic therapies.
Psychological Support: Access to advanced psychological resources could provide Time Lords with the support needed to understand and manage their condition.
2. 📔 Personal Strategies:
Mindfulness and Meditation: Time Lords might use advanced forms of mindfulness and meditation to manage their mood swings, helping them maintain a balance between manic and depressive phases.
Social Support: Building strong relationships with companions and other Time Lords could provide crucial emotional support during both manic and depressive episodes, cos sometimes you just need a hand to hold.
🏫 So ...
Bipolar disorder in Time Lords is indeed possible and has unique challenges and variations compared to humans. Their advanced physiology, regenerative abilities, and access to sophisticated medical and psychological resources offer them unique ways to manage the condition.

My thoughts on Romeo F. "Bedman" Neumann Guilty Gear
SPOILERS FOR: Guilty Gear Xrd, Guilty Gear Strive
At the risk of sounding too nerdy, I have some predictions not just about Romeo (alias Bedman)'s current state of affairs after his death in Xrd and his young sister taking his place, but also for his potential return as his own character separate from the Bedman identity in either future Strive DLC or a post-Strive installment of Guilty Gear.
Based primarily on what I have been able to gather from Xrd and Strive's story modes, as well as the arcade mode for Happy Chaos in Strive, it is very strongly implied that Romeo is not in fact dead as it's presented on its face.
In his conversation with Axl, Romeo had mentioned that his sister was lost to the dream world long ago, meaning that she didn't even have so much as a physical body in the material world. In his final scene in Xrd Revelator we see his body straight up turn to stone and crumble to pieces. On its face, he would appear to be dead, right?
[COMICALLY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER]
You would be wrong! In Guilty Gear Strive's arcade mode while playing as Happy Chaos, if you beat I-no on stage 7 without dropping a round, Happy Chaos discusses demi-humans and their ontological implications with I-no. In doing so, he offhandedly mentions Romeo. Specifically he says, and I quote:
"Did you know there was a guy named Bedman who managed to delete his own ID and became a multi-dimensional being?"
Entities in the Guilty Gear world who lack IDs (usually vampires or werewolves, i.e. demi-humans) exist in all parallel universes at once, and Romeo is a rare example of a multi-dimensional being who is (barring his unusual psychic powers) an ordinary human. While Happy Chaos does talk about him in past tense here, all other multidimensional beings we know of (e.g. Slayer, Nagoriyuki) are functionally immortal and I see no reason as to why Romeo would be an exception to this rule.
Now, what do I think happened? I figure that Romeo saved Delilah's life by switching places with her in the dream world, which as is confirmed in his conversation with Axl and his arcade mode in Xrd, is connected to the Backyard. Much like her, he lost his physical form and now exists as a disembodied consciousness who at most has remote control over his mechanised bed. It would also fit in with some of the lyrics in Bedman?'s Strive theme.
"Pitch black, pure white, all the same!" could be interpreted as meaning that where Romeo expected to find death, he found yet another dream. This is corroborated by how in Xrd his dreams are mostly represented as being a white void, as well as a common interpretation of death being nothing but empty darkness going on forever.
"But I can't find you with access to the back of my eyelids." implies that he still has some source of agency and isn't actually dead, but that he's in some kind of sleep, also tying into the idea that he's trapped in a dream with no body to wake up in rather than just full-on dead.
While the circle that's mentioned throughout the song can very clearly be referring to the cycle of death and rebirth known as saṃsāra, songs don't just have one intended meaning and the same symbolism can refer to multiple things at once. For example the circle could also be a way to refer to the physical world that Guilty Gear takes place in, in contrast to the Backyard which is a plane of abstract data. When he says he's on the border of the circle, it could in fact mean that he exists trapped in the Backyard, on the border of the physical world.
Now, how can he come back? If he's trapped in the Backyard, there are only really two people with the power to bring him back as of right now: Asuka R. Kreutz and The Original/Happy Chaos. Asuka would be able to as he's the one in possession of the Tome of Origin, which is the Backyard's physical manifestation in reality. He can glean all information from it, and thus if Romeo tried to call for help, Asuka could very plausibly find him. In addition, Asuka has made physical vessels for people in the past. He created Jack-O' Valentine as a vessel for Aria Hale's soul, and the planned Happy Chaos unit was a vessel to be made to house I-no's soul so she could live a normal life (though it was never finished). Nothing I know about Guilty Gear's lore precludes Asuka from making a physical vessel for Romeo's consciousness to inhabit to save him from the Backyard. As for now though, it seems Romeo's only connection to the physical world left is his old bed, where he silently watches over Delilah while he can say nothing to comfort her or reassure her that he's actually there.
tl;dr Romeo's trapped in the Backyard and only Asuka or Happy Chaos can bring him back. His only connection to reality left is his old bed.

Hiii. Can i have an imagine/fanfic. Where reader is Poe's sister and she have been in love with Kylo/Ben since ever, bc they know each other since they were kids. So, they have a special connection and decide to see in a secret place. maybe a little smut/romantic at the end. 🎆
this has been sitting in my inbox for YEARS and i am so sorry i haven't answered it! I hope you enjoy, my lovely!
~~~~~~~~~~
The air was filled with electricity as Kylo Ren flew his ship to a remote outpost in the Outer Rim. He had been secretly meeting with his childhood best friend and fellow Padawan, Norra Dameron, for years. His defection to the Dark Side dented their relationship, but the connection they had was still ever present. As he descended towards the outpost, an X-Wing bearing a rebellion symbol met is view, a gentle smirk gracing his lips as he landed on the opposite side of the worn down outpost.
The gravel under his boots crunched with every step he took, lightsaber at the ready for any threats he hadn't accounted for before knocking a secret pattern on the door. The Force tingled around him as the door slid open, Norra's head peeking out from around the corner, a blaster poised in her small hand.
"Commander Ren." Norra said, stepping aside to allow Kylo entry into their meeting place, holstering her blaster as she faced the towering stature of her best friend.
"Lieutenant Dameron." As soon as the door slid shut behind him, Kylo swept Norra into his arms, a heavy kiss shared between them.
"I missed you," Norra mumbled against Kylo's lips, her fingers digging into his black armor.
"I've missed you too, sweetheart. How's your training going?" Kylo pulled himself away from Norra, his gloved fingers pushing a stray curl back behind her ear.
"It's going well, thank you. I feel stronger every day." She threw her left hand out and channeled the Force, quickly crumpling a metal panel in the wall of the dilapidated outpost. She ripped it from the wall, sparks flying as the wires underneath the panel were exposed suddenly.
"You are stronger, Little One. I'm impressed." Kylo's gruff monotone voice echoed around the empty room as he wrapped his arms around her waist, planting his chin on top of her head as they swayed silently together.
"How much time do we have?" Norra questioned, wanting to absorb as much time as she could, their meetings becoming spread out the more the First Order grew.
"Two hours, give or take. General Hux and I have a meeting with Supreme Leader Snoke to discuss the girl from Jakku." Norra's lips set in a thin line, her loyalty to her best friend waning as he mentioned the newest addition to the Rebel cause. Kylo felt the air stiffen as Norra's feelings seeped out around her. "I love when you get jealous. You know you're the only one for me, right?"
"I know. Well, best not keep the good general waiting." Norra answered, spinning in Kylo's grasp, her hazel eyes boring deeply into his brown ones. Kylo scoffed and rolled his eyes, his general anything but good. He pressed a heated kiss to Norra's mouth, tapping her thighs and catching her with strong arms when she jumped into his grasp. As her thin fingers wrapped in his hair, Kylo was happy he left his mask in his ship, tracing his tongue along her bottom lip before plunging into her mouth. Norra groaned at the feeling of Kylo's tongue dancing with hers, her fingers gripping tighter in Kylo's unruly hair.
"Kylo, fuck me, please." Norra whined as Kylo's lips trailed down her neck, tearing her robes away from her body to access more of her tanned skin. While Kylo undressed her, she ripped her hair out of the bun she had tied it in, wild brown curls falling down to her shoulders. She gripped Kylo's armor, fumbling with it as she tried to remove it with trembling hands. No matter how often she and Kylo had met in secret, learning each other's bodies, her nerves always managed to burn under her skin.
Kylo dropped Norra to her feet, watching with hungry eyes as her uniform pooled around her ankles and leaving her bare. He stripped himself out of his armor and his black robes, removing his gloves so he could feel her soft flesh as she writhed under him. Kylo swept her into his arms once more, placing her on a dusty metal desk, goosebumps popping up on her thighs. Another kiss was shared, Kylo's warm hands spreading her thighs open to give him access to her most intimate part. He swiped two of his long fingers through her already soaked folds, a shiver spreading through Norra as the butterflies in her tummy began to flutter aggressively.
"I've barely touched you, Little One, and you're already soaked. Are you ready?" Kylo's voice dropped another octave, thick with arousal as Norra nodded beneath him. He plunged two fingers into her sopping wet pussy, smirking as she moaned loudly at the intrusion. He slowly pumped his fingers in and out of her, curling into her g-spot.
"Kylo, please!" Norra's fingernails dug into the bare skin of Kylo's arms as she begged once more for him to pound her into oblivion.
"Patience, my love. I promise to make you feel good, and I always keep my promises." Kylo connected his lips to Norra's collarbone, sucking a dark mark onto her skin, soothing the pain with his tongue before he switched sides. He loved marking her up, having her leave him for long periods of time with enough memories to last until they could reunite again. His fingers pumped in and out of her at a faster and more brutal pace, her moans flowing freely and bouncing around the abandoned outpost as her orgasm began building inside her. Kylo took one of her nipples into his mouth, swirling his tongue around her peak while his hand pinched the other. Norra's hand wrapped around the back of his head, pressing the tall man further into her plush chest and moaning at his ministrations. Kylo's palm brushed against her clit with every thrust of his fingers inside her, adding a third to fill her up even more. Her tight heat clenched around his fingers, signaling that her orgasm was rapidly approaching. Kylo pulled away from her breasts, trailing wet, open-mouthed kisses up her neck until his lips were by her ear. "Cum for me, my little Rebel. Let the galaxy know who makes you feel this good."
The coil in Norra's stomach snapped, her arousal gushing around Kylo's long fingers. He pulled his hand away from her core, shoving his soaking digits into her mouth and groaning when she started sucking her orgasm from his fingers. He pumped himself a few times before lining up to her entrance, his tongue replacing the fingers in her mouth as he thrusted into her. He bottomed out instantly, the tip of his cock brushing against her swollen g-spot. Kylo's hips jerked as he set an intense pace, one of his big hands wrapping around her throat.
"Fuck, Kylo, feels so good! Don't stop, please!" Norra cried, her thighs locking around Kylo's hips as he buried himself deeper inside her. He moaned loudly at the feeling of Norra's pussy clenching around his thick cock, his hand pushing harder against her throat. Norra's face turned red as she struggled to breathe, her fingers tapping the outside of Kylo's thigh to tell him to lighten his touch. He removed his hand completely as the sound of a smack echoed around the room, slapping her clit before rubbing it in fast circles.
"You're so close. Give it to me, I know you can." Kylo ordered, his hips and fingers going impossibly fast as he coaxed her approaching orgasm to the surface. He pressed another kiss to her mouth, swallowing Norra's moans and screams as she raced towards her orgasm, her thighs trembling as she began matching Kylo's aggressive and sloppy thrusts.
"More, Kylo. Please, I need more!" Norra yelled, her tummy tightening as her orgasm drew ever closer. With his fingers working her clit, his cock buried balls deep inside her, and his mouth still muffling her moans, Kylo relied on the Force, his surge of power pinching her nipples. That was all it took for Norra to scream and thrash in Kylo's grasp, his hips stuttering as his own orgasm took over, spilling his seed inside his best friend. Norra's thighs shook as Kylo stilled inside her, the feeling of her pussy more comforting than any hug he had ever gotten. He ran his fingers through her curls, her eyes still blown wide with lust.
"Come back with me, Norra." Kylo whispered earnestly, pressing more kisses to her throat, showering her with love and adoration.
"I can't. Poe would scour the entire galaxy to find me." Norra's fingers brushed over the warmth of Kylo's skin as she reveled in the affection she was being given.
"Don't you want to rule with me? Fuck in my bed and display to everyone who owns you?" He asked, brushing his lips over one of the hickeys on her collarbone.
"You know I'd love to, but my loyalty is to my brother, and his lies with the rebellion. My hands are tied, Kylo." The tall commander pushed himself away from Norra, throwing her clothes in her direction as he dressed himself quickly. Norra followed his lead, shoving her feet into her boots and trying to ignore the throbbing between her thighs. Her head hung low as she popped her knuckles, tying her hair back into a bun as she and Kylo prepared to part ways for another undefined length of time.
"She's with the rebellion, the girl from Jakku." Norra muttered as she adjusted her blaster and lightsaber against her waist.
"I'm aware. Anything else?" Kylo asked curtly, turning back towards Norra and watching as she shook her head.
"I overheard something about Maz Katana's tavern, but I'm not positive about anything else."
"I see." Norra nodded, deeming the conversation over as she walked back to the door of the outpost, stealing a peek at the surrounding area to see if anyone had found them while they were wrapped in each other's embrace just a few moments before. The coast was clear.
"I guess we'd better be going then, Commander Ren. Wouldn't want to keep the Supreme Leader waiting. I've heard he's not a patient man." Norra called over her shoulder, surveying the dusty room to make sure she wasn't forgetting anything before making her way back towards her borrowed X-Wing. As she reached for the ladder leading to the cockpit, Norra was spun around, a desperate kiss planted on her mouth.
"I love you, Lieutenant Norra Dameron. Thank you for your help, sweet girl."
"You're welcome, Commander Kylo Ren. I'd do anything for you. I love you, too." They kissed again, Kylo reaching around her waist to pinch her ass, chuckling at the squeal that she pressed against his lips.
"I'll see you soon." With that, Kylo Ren turned and stalked towards his ship, climbing into the cockpit. Ever the gentleman, Kylo stared at Norra as she also entered her ship, allowing her to take off before he followed.
It started out as rumours; someone was offering a big commission to find an individual and write an investigative article about him, a man who was an enigma from the time his identity had been connected with the infamous assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The man, Bucky Barnes, had defied all attempts in the second half of the 20th century and then another decade into the 21st to find and neutralize him. The longest serving PoW ever recorded, he had been kept as a prisoner of HYDRA, changed into a super soldier, tortured, brainwashed, then forced into becoming an assassin, taking out whoever HYDRA ordered him to, until his final mission. That was the one where he was ordered to kill his childhood friend, Steve Rogers. His own memories had resurfaced, fought the programming that forced him to kill. He saved his friend and, in the process, helped to bring down the secretive organization that were this close to taking control of the world. Then Barnes, after helping the next Captain America, Sam Wilson, defeat the Flag Smashers kind of fell off the radar. He left New York, moved to Louisiana for a while, then just disappeared.
There were sightings of him; running a bar in the Maldives, operating a fishing boat charter in Huatulco, Mexico, even a rumour he had opened a restaurant in Thailand but by the time anyone wanting a piece of that commission got there he was gone, like the ghost he was thought to be at the height of his assassin years. When I got a mysterious email, offering me, Maya Riggs, still struggling to pay my college tuition, the chance to join in the search for the elusive Barnes I jumped at it. This was my chance to prove I could work with the big names in journalism; find the clues that would lead me to Barnes, then write about the chase, and perhaps about the man. My reward would be a cool 10 million, as well as the title of the writer who cracked the mystery of where Barnes was.
Two years later I was on the cusp of what I was sure to be the biggest story of my life. I was in a seaplane flying in a long sweeping arc over a remote crescent shaped island in the Bahamas group of islands. On the aircraft’s final approach towards the multipurpose dock that seemed to be the only access point to Lunatum Island I noticed the thick foliage on the small but lush isolated refuge. It was thicker than I expected, almost as if it was saying I was going to have to dig deeper to find any answers. As the pilot skillfully landed the small aircraft on the calm turquoise waters, the seemingly endless white sand beach looked like it extended forever but I knew from looking at maps that the beaches were only present on the inner part of the small crescent shaped isle. Still, when it’s the only land for many miles it could feel bigger.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” asked the pilot, Jerry. “You’re fortunate to come here. It’s very exclusive and I can count on one hand the number of people I’ve ever flown here.”
“Yet the resort can hold a good two dozen guests,” I replied. “How do they get here?”
“Personal aircraft,” he said. “Not by charter, not mine at least.”
A man on the dock waited for us, signalling the pilot when he was close enough to the dock, then stepping onto the pontoon with a rope to fasten the plane to the structure. The man, with light brown hair smiled as he opened the passenger door.
“Miss Riggs? I’m Curtis. Welcome to Lunatum Island. Your publisher sent a radio message that your pickup will be in one week. Jerry here will return for you then. We’re just waiting for an outgoing guest to get here. If you want to wait in the shade, there are some refreshments in ice for you under the trees on the beach. You’ll go back on the golf cart with Antoine. I’ll bring your luggage.”
So much for coming here incognito. I had already lined up a publisher for a travel story on the mysterious island resort, convincing them to pony up the money to stay here. It wasn’t cheap, more than a year’s tuition at many prestigious colleges. But I was certain that I had the final destination of James Buchanan Barnes. That commission check would be mine.
I thanked Jerry for the great flight then walked on the dock towards the beach. A large metal washtub filled with ice was full of assorted bottled drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Picking up a beer I opened it then sat on one of the lounge chairs and put my feet up while I took a long drink of the cold beverage. Curtis was talking with Jerry, the pilot, joking in the way that men of brief acquaintance often do. Then he reached in back of the aircraft and pulled out my suitcase, bringing it down the dock towards me.
“How long have you worked here?” I asked when he stood near me.
“A few years,” he replied. “Got out of the services, bummed around a bit, then heard they were looking for someone to handle incoming flights and be a gofer for a private resort. It’s nice and quiet here.”
“How many staff?”
He shrugged. “Many of our guests bring their own. Other than me, there’s Antoine, Jake runs the bar, and we have different chefs that work on their newest creations in solitude that provides the cooking, plus the odd person who is hired on as needed. It works.”
“How many guests are here right now?” I asked casually. “Anyone famous?”
He turned a serious gaze on me. “Our guests come here expecting complete and total privacy. They get it. I would suggest you tone down your curiosity as it could lead to problems, and you wouldn’t be allowed to stay to write your travel article.”
If it was a threat, it was a subtle one but before I could respond we both heard the sound of a golf cart approaching. Driven by a dark-haired man with a single passenger, a very angry but beautiful woman, the cart stopped at where the dock met the sandy beach. Without even waiting for Antoine to get out the woman angrily stepped off the cart and grabbed her suitcase, depositing it loudly on the dock.
“I have never been in a place with such indifferent service,” she complained to Antoine. “No tip for you and I’ll be giving you zeroes across the board on every travel website I can. You call this exclusive? I call it a scam.”
She stalked towards the seaplane, leaving Curtis to bring her suitcase. Antoine, seemingly not bothered by the little scene looked at me.
“Miss Riggs, I presume,” he stated. “Sorry about that. Miss Webster had a different type of resort in mind when she booked her week here, expecting to be waited on hand and foot in a spa experience. That’s not what we’re about.”
I looked at her, now struggling to get into the small seaplane. “She didn’t know you offer a complete break from the world I take it. No wifi, no cell phone coverage, just a place of calm to recharge.”
He smiled. “You get it. Come on, I’ll take you to your bungalow.”
Grabbing my suitcase he put it in the back of the golf cart, waited for me to get in then started towards the other end of the island. While he was happy to talk about the natural beauty of the location, when I began questioning him about the type of people who stayed here, he reacted just like Curtis did and told me not to pursue questions about any of the guests. When we got to the bungalow, I walked inside, pleasantly surprised to find a beautifully laid out oasis of calm. The pastel colours of the walls seemed to promote the feeling of total relaxation. The bed, a large king sized one, was covered in what were evidently expensive linens. Showing me the bathroom facilities, I could tell that no money had been spared in the quality of the fittings.
“The bar is open from 11 am to 11 pm daily,” said Antoine. “It is also where breakfast is served until 10 am, lunch from noon to 2 pm, and dinner from 6 pm until 9 pm. All food and drinks are included in the cost and tipping is not permitted. Power is solar and battery operated while we have a very deep well to provide water so you can shower as long as you wish. As you already know there is no cell phone coverage or wifi so you are completely cut off from the rest of the world.”
“How do you stay in contact?” I asked.
“Long distance radio,” he answered, just a little too quickly for my tastes. “As Curtis no doubt explained and I am confirming again, the privacy of our guests is paramount. You are not at liberty to photograph them without their permission, nor are you to go snooping around their bungalows. The same goes for them as regards to you. I hope you take this opportunity to take a break from the rat race and enjoy our relaxing atmosphere.”
He left me then and I opened my suitcase, pulling out a bathing suit and coverup. Quickly taking a shower I changed and headed towards the bar, located centrally on the widest part of the beach. I had to start somewhere. When I got there several people were sitting in scattered groupings. They all stopped talking when I entered then resumed their conversations after I sat at the bar.
“Hi, what’s your pleasure?” asked the bartender. “I can make just about anything.”
“Surprise me,” I said. “Something tropical and sweet but refreshing.”
With a grin he began mixing some drinks, glancing up at me every so often. I watched him, noticing his well-built physique under the tight shirt he was wearing. His muscular arms were definitely impressive, and I wondered how he kept fit in such a remote environment. Placing an aqua blue coloured drink that matched the colour of the ocean around us in front of me, he topped it off with a skewer of lime and a maraschino cherry.
“A Hypnotic Breeze,” he stated. “Hypnotiq, white rum, lime juice, pineapple juice and simple syrup. Tell me what you think.”
Sipping it gave me a rush of sweet and tart but definitely tasty and I told him, making him grin as if I had made his day. After that one he made another while we talked about various things. It was a different cocktail, but equally as good and definitely potent as I could feel myself becoming more relaxed. It also made me bold as I began to study the other guests, trying to figure out their identities. The bartender, whose name tag Jake confirmed the name that Curtis gave me, watched me while he made drinks for the others, taking them out on trays. He would stand and talk with them, joking about different things, then come back to see if I wanted another drink, which I did as they were so good. When dinner was announced I couldn’t believe the time had gone by so quickly.
“Would you like your meal here at the bar or at one of the tables?” asked Jake. “It’s your choice.”
“Here,” I answered, “so I can look at your pretty eyes.”
He smiled slightly when I said that and set me up with cutlery. I had just enough of my wits about me to push my luck.
“No one ever said you had pretty eyes before?” I asked, trying to keep my voice soft and unthreatening.
“Sure, many times,” he answered. Then he leaned towards me. “It’s just that I never heard it from a guest who hasn’t been drinking.”
“That’s too bad,” I replied, feeling even more bold with the alcohol flowing through my system. “I thought you had pretty eyes before I started drinking. And a nice build, and a hot ass.”
He blushed, which surprised me, that a man as good looking as him would still blush at being complimented. Someone from the kitchen, the chef maybe, appeared with a tray of food and together they served everyone, still sitting at their tables, finishing with me. As I speared a shrimp, I realized that no one had taken an order from me. Then I bit into the shrimp and didn’t care as it was plump and juicy and perfect. Seasoned with just the right amount of butter and garlic I couldn’t get enough of it or the pasta it was paired with. It was incredible food. The wine that was served with it was sublime, and then the pièce de résistance was the chocolate mousse dessert that appeared in front of me. Jake smiled at me, watching with amusement, as I dug into it, seemingly enjoying my cries of delight over the rich creaminess of the final course in the meal. It was the perfect way to finish my first day at the resort. Afterwards I stuck to sparkling water, lounging on a beach chair in the deepening twilight, until I returned to my bungalow and fell into an incredible sleep.
The following day I went to the bar, where breakfast was served buffet style. The assortment of tea, coffee and juices were also self-serve, and I ate without any worries. Although I looked for Jake he wasn’t there, and I guessed he had mornings off. I spent the morning exploring, avoiding the residences as I was warned but I did look for any sign of technology, still not quite believing this island was as cut-off as they claimed. I saw Antoine and Curtis a couple of times, waving to them as I walked. After an excellent lunch of all sorts of salads, and cold dishes designed to refresh I took a nap, then went swimming. Despite my misgivings over the legitimacy of the resort I could feel myself being lulled into the sense of timelessness it offered.
Dinner was as superb as the night before as I sat at the bar, once again admiring Jake. There were other guests there, but he seemed to be focused on my needs.
“So, you had a good first day?” he asked, as he made me another Hypnotic Breeze without asking. “What did you do?”
I told him about exploring and swimming. After sipping my drink, I looked at him again.
“So, what’s your story?” I asked. “You seem awfully young to be working in such a remote location.”
“I’m older than I look,” he admitted. “Was in the army, had some issues, couldn’t function well in a busier place so I looked for a small quiet corner of the world and found it here. I’m happy.”
“No one special in your life?” I asked, toying with the maraschino cherry.
“No. Haven’t met the right one yet. Most women my age like being where all the excitement is, and I don’t.”
He left me then as one of the other guests waved to him and I watched as they spoke, making him grin a little then they looked back to me. Returning to behind the bar he made another round of drinks for them and served them. By the time he returned I was ready for another drink.
“How about a Tropical Bay Breeze?” he asked. “Coconut rum, pineapple and cranberry juice. Easy but tasty.”
I nodded, finding it as good as he suggested. Throughout the evening he gave me more drinks to try. If I had been more suspicious, I would have wondered if he had designs on me based on the amount of alcohol he served me, but he never crossed any lines of behaviour. Not once did he use a pickup line on me or touch me. I did talk to him about writing and how much debt I was in after finishing my journalism degree. Somehow the topic of the 10-million-dollar prize to the writer who found Bucky Barnes came up. He smiled slightly, if a little sadly.
“Is that why you’re really here?” he asked.
“No, not at all,” I spluttered, wondering why I had mentioned it, even as the alcohol haze settled over me. “I’m here to write a travel article. I mean, this is the most exclusive resort in the world. Any writer would give an arm and a leg for an opportunity just to write about this place, right?”
I looked behind me to see what the others thought and was surprised to find I was the only one left in the bar.
“Where did they all go?” I asked.
Jake smiled sadly again. “Back to their bungalows. They do that with every new guest on the island. They don’t want to affect the lottery.”
I didn’t understand what he was saying. “Lottery, what lottery?”
He smiled again and I got the feeling he was disappointed in me. “On the people that come looking for Bucky Barnes,” he replied. “There’s a lottery on what happens when they don’t find him.”
Okay, I was detecting a definite amount of emotion in how he said that, and I suddenly wanted to go back to my bungalow. I slid off the barstool, almost falling over with the motion. He reached out to steady me, but I put my hands out, not wanting his help. I was a big girl. I had been drunk before and could make my way home by myself. I headed one way and heard his voice.
“Maya, your bungalow is the other way,” he said softly.
“Right,” I nodded and turned around, stumbling out of the bar.
It took a while, step by step, one foot in front of the other, but I made it back and fell onto my bed before I had a thought. Who brought up the topic of Bucky Barnes? Was it him or me? Who were these people, really?
🛌 💊
When I woke up, I was under the covers of the bed, still in my clothes, although my shoes had been removed. My head was pounding from the hangover. Beside the bed was a bottle of water and a couple of painkillers. Someone knew I would need this, and I took them, draining almost half the bottle to chase the pills. When the headache subsided, I roused myself to have a shower and changed into shorts and a tank top. I dispensed with putting on the makeup and did my hair in a single French braid. As I did, the last thoughts I remembered from the night before came to my mind.
Determined to get an answer I headed for the bar. Breakfast was still ongoing, and like before it was all self-serve, with no sign of Jake. A young woman came out to replenish one of the dishes and I went to her.
“Is Jake around?” I asked. “I want to apologize to him for my behaviour last night.”
“Jake is off this morning,” she replied.
I looked at her name tag, Kelly.
“How long have you been here, Kelly?” I asked, pouring myself a glass of orange juice and taking a sip.
“About a year,” she answered. “Not full time as I have a job on the mainland. When I have breaks there I come here to work as it’s just as relaxing as taking a vacation. It’s so laid back, you know?”
“Sounds ideal,” I said. “Were you in college?” She shook her head but didn’t answer. “Jake said something to me last night that puzzled me. Maybe you can explain why he said it.”
She stopped what she was doing and stood directly in front of me with her arms crossed. Her demeanour had shifted somewhat but I couldn’t really tell why she seemed irritated with me, considering I had never met her before.
“Go ahead,” she said. “Ask away.”
“He said something about a lottery involving people looking for Bucky Barnes.” I spit it out. No point pussyfooting around the question. “What did he mean?”
“What do you think?” she asked, sounding defensive.
“I think he thought I’m here looking for the Winter Soldier,” I replied.
“Don’t call him that,” she retorted, suddenly sounding protective. “It’s wrong, so wrong.”
“What do you know, Kelly?”
Antoine appeared from the kitchen. “Kelly, take your break, okay? I’ll take over.” He looked sternly at me. “Miss Riggs, I warned you about asking about the other guests.”
“So, he is here,” I stated. “This is where he’s hiding out. I haven’t even seen him but I’m in trouble for just asking. What’s this about a lottery involving the people looking for Barnes? Why do you think I’m looking for him?”
Antoine sighed. “Because you are, aren’t you? Nearly every stranger that comes here is looking for him and he just wants to be left alone. He’s suffered enough and the world will continue on without knowing anything more about Bucky Barnes.”
“Just let me talk to him,” I said. “If I hear it from his lips then I’ll leave, and I won’t say anything.”
“I bet 10 million dollars that you will,” said Antoine, who nodded at someone behind me.
As I turned to see who it was, I felt something prick my neck and I began to feel lightheaded then drowsy. The weird part is that Antoine took his face off and underneath he was Tony Stark, but everyone knew that Tony Stark died in October 2023, from the injuries he received when he and the Avengers saved the world from Thanos.
“I really thought she would be different,” said a familiar voice, Jake’s voice.
Then I blacked out completely.
💉 🌅 🌌
It was almost sunset when I woke up. I was still in the bar, but I was seated on one of the plush armchairs, curled up on it like a cat in front of a fireplace.
“There she is,” said a soft voice and I turned my head towards it.
It was him, Bucky Barnes, his face lit up by the setting sun, his hair long but the top part pulled back away from his face and fastened with a hair tie. His lower face was covered by his full beard, but it was his eyes that caught my attention as they gazed at me, studying every part of my face. Self-consciously I sat up and he handed me a water bottle.
“You should drink it, so you don’t feel dehydrated,” he said. “The sedative can do that. I’m sorry about that. They’re pretty protective of me and once you spooked Kate, Tony had to intervene, and Clint decided to take action.”
“You drugged me?” I was angry. “What gives you the right?”
“What gives you the right to come onto a private island looking for a man who’s in hiding?” asked another voice and I turned the other way to see Tony Stark.
“You’re dead,” I said. “You died.”
“I almost died and decided to check out permanently,” he said. “This is my island, and you were my guest, but you couldn’t even respect my wishes. You had to ask questions even though you were warned.”
“Tony, please,” interrupted Bucky. “Let me talk to her. I know you’re angry, but she was only at the question stage because I mentioned my name and the lottery. Kate did overreact and so did Clint.”
Kate, Clint … was he talking about Kate Bishop and her Hawkeye predecessor, Clint Barton? I was so confused. Bucky stood up and offered me his hand. At first, I hesitated.
“We’re not going to hurt you,” he said calmly. “I’m going to tell you everything, but I need you to trust me, just a little. Please, Maya.”
Tony huffed a little, but he raised his hands in surrender, and I stood up, taking Bucky’s hand. He led me out onto the beach. We walked silently for a bit, and I have to admit it was nice, romantic almost, but the fact remained that they drugged me, and I wanted answers. He stopped where there were a couple of lounge chairs facing the water and gestured for me to sit.
“A few months after Sam Wilson and I dispensed with the Flag Smashers I was kidnapped, drugged, and woke up in one of the HYDRA bases I had been kept in,” he said. “Of course, I was afraid, but I thought I could fight my way out, except for one thing. They found a way to reinstall the Winter Soldier, permanently, and were prepared to stop me from leaving in any way imaginable so they could force the transition on me. Before they could do it, I was rescued by the Black Panther, Captain America, both Hawkeyes, the sister of Black Widow and US Agent.” He smirked after the last name. “I was surprised at his cooperation, but they asked for his help and with a million-dollar payout from Pepper Stark he agreed. The Black Panther took the information on how they were going to turn me back and realized there was nothing that could be done to stop or undo it. So, it was suggested that I retire and go into hiding. Except it always seemed like people found me.”
“So, the Maldives, Mexico and Thailand really were you?” I asked.
He nodded. “I’m adaptable and a quick learner and would have been happy doing any of those things for the rest of my life but people kept looking for me. Then Pepper Stark let me in on a big secret. Tony survived his encounter with Thanos. He was sick a long time, but he got better. He wanted out, wanted time with her and their daughter so he bought this island and offered me a place to live. The Avengers come here to relax, and I act as chef sometimes, bartender other times, but most of the time I read, work out, swim, and enjoy living a life of peace and quiet.”
“The arm.” I gestured to his apparently flesh left arm.
“It’s an enchantment,” he replied. “The nano mask is problematic on a body part.”
“The commission, it’s really a bounty, isn’t it?” I asked, feeling sick at the thought.
“Yeah, that’s what it is,” he said. “You’re not the first one to come here. They get the information and approach someone to come to the island, bribing their way onto it, a woman usually.” I could see him smile in the deepening twilight. “They think I’m lonely and that I can be seduced. Occasionally, they send a man, but I like women better.”
I looked back down the beach, seeing the outline of Tony and Clint. “They’re in jeopardy as well, aren’t they?”
“Yup, all three of us just want to live a quiet life without anyone bothering us.” He shifted to face me. “Tony lets the incursion happen wanting to see if the person is aware of how they’re being used or if they’re an actual operative. I figured out pretty easily that you weren’t aware.”
“I got drunk and blabby,” I smiled. “That’s me. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, for all of you. They haven’t figured out that Tony and Clint are part of it, have they?”
He shook his head. “Not yet. It’s been close, close enough that Tony has bought another island and is in the process of setting up there. He’ll sell this one, bury the sale in layers of straw sellers and buyers so that they can’t make the connection. We’ll go to another place and start over.” He stood up, gazing at me as I stood up in front of him. “Out of all the women that have made it here I was attracted to you the most. For a brief moment I pictured a life here with you.”
“I won’t tell them where you are,” I said. “None of you have to fear that.”
“I know,” he whispered. “But it’s not that easy.” Even in the dark, his eyes became glassy. “They can’t take any chances and although they won’t hurt you, they won’t let you remember what happened here. It’s better that way, safer for us and for you. I’m sorry.”
I understood suddenly what he meant, remembering the angry woman who was leaving as I was arriving. She was there for the bounty, but her memories were altered so all she remembered was being treated poorly at a high-end resort. It’s what they would do to me.
“Do I get the week still?”
“No, you go out tomorrow,” he replied. “I wish it were longer so that we could ….”
“It’s alright,” I smiled, then I became bold, one final time. “Would you stay with me tonight?”
He looked down the beach to where the two men were, now joined by a third, the young woman. Gently, he touched my cheek and kissed me. All I wanted was to be in his arms for the few hours I had left there. Afterwards, they would take the memory of him from my mind, and I would lose him. But to keep him and the others safe, maybe it was worth that sacrifice. We ended up in my bungalow and made love in a way that I would have remembered for the rest of my life, except I didn’t. The last thing I did before I fell asleep was cry in his arms as he consoled me with soft words and kisses.
🧳 🛫
“I have never been so humiliated in my life,” I said to Antoine as he waited for me to finish packing. “I paid for a week and just because I got drunk, you’re kicking me out?”
“Yup,” he answered. “You were offensive to the guests and the staff, and we just don’t tolerate that kind of behaviour at our resort. I have radioed our lawyer to tell your publisher that any article produced by you will be considered libellous. Now, if you don’t mind, it’s time for you to go.”
I was furious but what choice did I have. It was written in the booking contract that any unsavoury behaviour by the guest was grounds for immediate cancellation of the booking. It also meant my writing career was pretty finished. No one would ask me to write for them, knowing this happened. Somehow, I kept my tongue as Antoine transported me to the dock. Unlike my arrival there was no one waiting for the ride back to the resort. There was Jake, however, with Kelly and Curtis waiting to see me off in my disgrace.
“Assholes, all of them,” I thought.
I grabbed my suitcase and began the walk of shame towards the seaplane where Jerry was waiting. To his credit he said nothing then nor for the entire flight back to Nassau. I went straight to the airport there and flew back to New York, where a message awaited me on my email to say the contract for the travel piece was cancelled and good luck in finding another publisher. They also told me I was lucky they weren’t going to sue me for the non-refundable cost of the resort stay.
Over the next few months, I worked at a Trader Joe’s. It paid the bills and gradually I got over the humiliation of losing my credibility as a writer when word came out that the perpetrators of a 10-million-dollar commission scam that had been making the email rounds were finally behind bars. Apparently, they were part of a terrorist group looking for Bucky Barnes, hoping to turn him back into the Winter Soldier. I couldn’t believe someone would stoop that low to find the man. He deserved to live the rest of his life in peace. There were more rumours about him, a sighting in Tasmania, then another as a crew member on an African safari, but gradually the rumours died down and for several more months there was nothing heard about him.
One day, while I was stocking the shelves at work, I was interrupted by a woman looking for a product. I helped her then realized she was Pepper Stark, blurting her name out then apologizing for saying it.
“That’s alright, Maya,” she said, looking at my name tag. “You’ve been very helpful. Do you like working here?”
I shrugged. “It pays the bills but it’s just a job,” I replied. “I was a writer, but I crossed a line and lost any chance to go further in that field. I regret that now that I’m a little older and wiser.”
She smiled sympathetically at me. “Well, there’s an entry level position at Stark Industries,” she said. “I liked how you helped me today and I don’t mind giving people second chances. Here’s my card. Call the number and set up an interview. Maybe I can help you get out of this job and into something more satisfying.”
I was genuinely surprised and thanked her, calling the number the next day. With an interview set for the next week I was excited at the prospect of something meaningful finally happening for me after my penance. When the day came, I was brought into a conference room with Pepper and several other people. They were all pleasant and asked me all sorts of questions about privacy and respect for boundaries. Everything seemed great then one of them said something strange to me.
“проснуться,” said a man, who repeated it in English. “Wake up.”
I looked around, knowing where I was but realizing that the last six or so months had happened as if I had been somewhere else, watching.
“What’s going on?” I asked Pepper.
The man who spoke smiled and pressed his hand to the side of his face, peeling it off, to reveal Bucky underneath.
As I cried out his name, he opened his arms and I fell into them, almost knocking the chair over.
“It worked, didn’t it?” I exclaimed. “You found them, found the ones who were looking for you.”
“We found them,” he said. “Just had to make sure we found all of them.” He caressed my face, taking all of it in as he gazed at me. “The plans for the machine are still out there so I have to stay hidden. I thought that you ….”
“Yes,” I cried. “Oh God yes. I’ll go with you anywhere. Just don’t take my memories again. I want to remember everything we do, because I don’t plan on ever leaving your side.”
He looked at both Tony and Clint, who had also taken their masks off. “Told you she was the one.”
“Alright,” said Tony, taking charge. “Pepper, you’ll take care of clearing out Maya’s apartment and getting her things to the new location? She won’t need anything for winter anymore. Bucky, you’re in charge of teaching her what she needs to know about living in hiding, including self-defence. She has to be ready to defend herself if they ever come looking again. Maya, welcome to the rest of your life but don’t forget to phone Trader Joe’s and quit.”
The other two men put their masks back on and left the conference room with Pepper while Bucky and I stayed there.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “I just knew I didn’t want to go without you. It will be warm; I can promise you that. Tony will have a lab to work in. If you want to write under a pseudonym, he’ll build you an office, and will line up a publisher. I’ll mix drinks, cook some meals, maybe raise some goats if the land is right. I did it in Wakanda and enjoyed it. Just so long as we’re together. I missed you.”
He kissed me again, just like he did on the beach of Lunatum Island, which I found out was Latin for crescent. With that first kiss I knew I was with the right man and went along with the plan to remove my memories, keeping me safe. This kiss in the boardroom confirmed it. There would be a life to live with this incredibly wonderful man; a life of peace and quiet that he craved and deserved. Like the Avengers, I would do my part to keep him safe from those who would exploit him. It was a lifetime commitment, but it would be a lifetime with Bucky and that was worth everything.
Creating a Truly Inclusive Workplace in 2025
In 2025, building a truly inclusive workplace is not just a goal but a necessity for companies that want to thrive in the ever-evolving business environment. As organizations adapt to changing employee expectations and global shifts, inclusivity is becoming a core value that drives innovation, engagement, and success. Recent HR trends for 2025 show a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), reflecting the growing awareness of creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.
In this blog, we’ll explore recent HR trends in 2025 that are transforming how companies approach inclusivity, the strategies they are implementing to foster diverse and inclusive environments, and how HR software is playing a crucial role in this process.
1. Shifting DEI from Policy to Practice
In 2024, we saw a heightened focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a fundamental aspect of workplace culture. Many companies introduced DEI policies and hired diversity officers to ensure their organizations were reflecting societal values. However, in 2025, the emphasis is on shifting DEI from policy to practice. It’s no longer enough to have policies in place—organizations must ensure that these principles are fully integrated into everyday business operations.
Creating a truly inclusive workplace means going beyond compliance. Organizations are focusing on inclusivity in recruitment, onboarding, career development, and leadership representation. Companies are taking a data-driven approach, using HR software to track key metrics such as the representation of underrepresented groups, pay equity, and promotion rates. By turning these insights into action, businesses can ensure that inclusivity is not just a buzzword but a lived experience for all employees.
2. The Role of HR Software in Advancing Inclusivity
HR software is playing a critical role in advancing inclusivity in the workplace. Recent HR trends for 2025 highlight the increasing use of technology to create equitable systems that eliminate bias in various HR processes.
For example, AI-powered HR software can help companies create more inclusive recruitment processes by reducing human bias in candidate selection. These platforms can anonymize resumes, ensuring that hiring decisions are based solely on skills and qualifications rather than unconscious biases related to gender, race, or ethnicity. Additionally, HR software can automatically screen candidates for diversity goals, helping companies create balanced teams from the outset.
Performance management is another area where HR software is making a difference. With continuous performance tracking tools, businesses can evaluate employees based on real-time data, helping to eliminate biases that can occur in annual reviews. Moreover, feedback loops and employee sentiment analysis help HR teams identify issues related to inclusivity and address them proactively.
3. Recent HR Trends in 2025
As the workplace continues to evolve, hybrid work models have become a permanent fixture in the landscape of work, following trends seen in 2024. However, inclusivity within hybrid and remote work environments presents unique challenges. In 2025, HR leaders are focused on ensuring that all employees—whether they work remotely, in-office, or a combination of both—feel equally included in company culture and have access to the same opportunities for growth and development.
One way organizations are achieving this is through the strategic use of HR software designed for hybrid work management. These platforms facilitate seamless collaboration and communication between remote and in-office teams, ensuring that all employees stay connected and engaged. By providing virtual spaces for team collaboration and feedback, HR software ensures that employees who may not be physically present in the office are not overlooked when it comes to promotions, professional development, or participation in key projects.
Another major trend is the use of virtual DEI initiatives, such as online inclusion training programs and virtual mentorships, to ensure all employees, regardless of location, can actively participate in diversity and inclusion efforts.
4. Personalization and Belonging: Key Elements of Inclusivity
One of the HR trends in 2024 that is continuing into 2025 is the focus on personalized employee experiences. A truly inclusive workplace must cater to the individual needs of its employees, recognizing that everyone has different preferences, challenges, and goals. Companies are increasingly offering personalized benefits packages, flexible work schedules, and tailored development programs to ensure that all employees feel supported and valued.
HR software plays a vital role in personalizing the employee experience. These platforms can collect data on employee preferences, work habits, and career goals, allowing companies to offer personalized recommendations for development opportunities, wellness programs, and work-life balance initiatives. Additionally, AI-driven learning management systems can create individualized learning paths for employees, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to grow and succeed.
Creating a sense of belonging is also key to an inclusive workplace. Employees need to feel that they are part of a community where their contributions are recognized and valued. In 2025, companies are using employee engagement tools within HR software to foster community-building and ensure that employees feel connected to their teams, regardless of their location.
5. Addressing Bias and Ensuring Equity
One of the most challenging aspects of creating an inclusive workplace is addressing unconscious bias and ensuring equity across all HR processes. In 2025, organizations are using HR software to tackle these issues head-on. AI and automation are particularly useful in eliminating bias from critical HR functions, such as recruitment, promotions, and performance evaluations.
For example, AI-driven recruitment tools can help ensure that job descriptions are gender-neutral and inclusive, attracting a diverse pool of candidates. These tools can also analyze data from previous hiring processes to identify patterns of bias and recommend corrective actions. Similarly, pay equity analysis tools within HR software help organizations track compensation trends and ensure that employees are being paid fairly, regardless of their background or demographics.
6. Mental Health and Well-Being as Part of Inclusivity
Recent HR trends in 2025 emphasize the growing importance of mental health and well-being as part of creating an inclusive workplace. Inclusivity goes beyond ensuring diversity in hiring—it also involves creating a supportive environment where all employees feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work. Companies are expanding their well-being programs to include mental health support, flexible working hours, and access to counseling services.
HR software helps organizations manage these programs by offering wellness tracking tools, mental health resources, and feedback mechanisms to monitor employee well-being. By collecting data on employee stress levels, work-life balance, and overall satisfaction, HR teams can make informed decisions on how to improve their well-being initiatives and create a more inclusive environment for all.
Conclusion
Creating a truly inclusive workplace in 2025 is about more than just hiring a diverse workforce—it’s about ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. As the recent HR trends in 2025 highlight, inclusivity is now deeply integrated into the core of business strategy, and HR software is playing a pivotal role in making this transformation possible.
By leveraging HR software to track diversity metrics, eliminate bias, personalize employee experiences, and support well-being, companies can create environments where every employee feels like they belong. In this evolving landscape, organizations that prioritize inclusivity will not only attract top talent but also foster innovation and drive long-term success.
