a few weeks ago somebody ran a stop sign and crashed into my car, and being both rich and nice they took full responsibility (it was 100% their fault and they literally live in a mansion, i googled their address bc spying on the person who caused 3k damage to your car is your natural right). their insurance also paid for me to get a rental car (nationwide IS on your side btw), so enterprise gave me a 2024 jetta for a week.

my car, for reference, is 11 and a half years old. that jetta was like a spaceship. i had to get the rental dude to come back and tell me how to turn it on. monkeys understand how to use a cell phone but i couldn’t turn on this ridiculous car. when my car was ready for pick up i was sad bc i had to give back my free spaceship. i don’t want to pay 30k and more for a damn new car but it sure was nice to drive that one around for zero dollars.

DAI Critical but maybe it’s me but I cannot find a comfortable way to play this game. Controller works in combat but scrolling menus is an absolute pain. M+KB for menus is faster but combat is horrible and general travel janky because the tactical camera, which is deeply unintuitive, keeps rearing its head.

Running in combat so slow. Search ping every 10 steps. Everything is blind turns to make these large maps feel larger while placing trees on every vista so you can’t scroll back and see anything without the camera getting lost.

Like I want to love this game and have wanted to love it for 10 years but Ooooooh My God…

When I was a teenager decent vhs camcorders became a semi-affordable thing for families so in my high school years my friends and I made movies instead of doing presentations, like we did The Further Adventures of The Little Prince and Medieval Family Feud and an absolutely insane reproduction of The Nutcracker filmed in my living room around our Christmas tree.

After graduation I went to a couple tapings of The Late Show with David Letterman and caught the TV bug and majored in Broadcast Communications for a year (straight A’s in Video Production) until my trauma caught up with me and I floundered and dropped out.

Literal decades passed and I was a writer and an artist and did graphic design and computer stuff but aside from playing around with cameras and stuff as a hobby (and a very short-lived YouTube channel) I really put all that in the past as like, “Old Me from the Old Days” haha wasn’t I an A/V nerd back in the day? Now I CREATE ART or whatever.

Then I return to church and our priest attempting to livestream and I’m like… chomping at the bit to be involved. She entrusted me with small things - she always streamed on her phone so asked me to do the same when she wasn’t there - but I always wanted to do so much more with it.

This fall without any consulting me the church got a grant for live-streaming and more or less totally fumbled it while I was taking my break from going. Then I go to a vestry meeting and ask about it then go on about Really Important Things They Need and now it’s been placed entirely in my hands. Like thousands of dollars to more or less make a TV show out of our church service.

And I’m like… this is right up my alley. I took video production in college. Those classes even counted for my recent degree.

I’ve thought of like nothing else for the past week. I’ve already got a 5-page proposal written up. It’s the most exciting thing I’ve done in a long time.

I’m beginning to believe everything we ever learn is knowledge given to us for a purpose. Nothing is ever wasted.

i was feeling nostalgic for poképark so i decided to play it on my steam deck (i have a wii + the disc but handhelds are more convenient) and it actually works quite well. the motion controls are situational enough that they can be mapped to buttons without interrupting normal gameplay

TIL anyone who's going to overwinter in Antarctica has to have had their appendix out. Because removing an appendix that's not causing any trouble just as a precaution is way better than having one that's about to burst when you're on the ass-end of the planet with no way to be rushed to a hospital if shit gets real.
